a strong sense of unity and resilience quickly took hold as neighbors began the cleanup together

One striking sight was a massive tree that had crashed onto a house
sparking immediate concern and action from the community

walking through the damaged areas brought back memories of Hurricane Katrina
which he experienced in New Orleans in 2005
“Seeing all this stuff just brings back a lot of memories
seeing all this again brings back some of those memories
But it also shows that there are people here who need help
We need many hands and feet to get out into the community.”
Massaro emphasized the importance of community involvement during crises
“The greatest thing I learned is to jump in and help
whether it’s picking up a little debris or offering a glass of cold water
Just doing something practical to help people.”

Johnson development has announced the addition of 600 homesites to its Sienna Plantation master-planned community
The new section of the sprawling development will be dubbed Heritage Park
This new neighborhood will offer nine new home models as well as a new series of home designs
Chesmar Homes is one of eight builders who will contribute floor plans to Heritage Park
Westin Homes and others will be featured in the expansion of the community
Popular existing floor plans from other Sienna Plantation neighborhoods will also be built
It is also home to a 160 acre sports park equipped with baseball
While pricing for the Heritage Park development has not yet been released, San Miguel said, “we expect that base pricing will be very attractive for entry-level buyers and others.” Current pricing of the 27 model homes within the community have ranged from $250,000 to more than $1 million. According to a report by HAR.com
the average home cost is about $450,000 with the average home containing 4 beds and 3 baths over about 3,400 square feet

The upscale, master-planned community of Sienna, southwest of Houston, features a rather large, unmarked building that provides a hint at the area’s antebellum past
the community was known as Sienna Plantation
The building is possibly the last of some 1,500 similar brick structures that were once scattered across the U.S
Sitting idle beside the modern homes of the development
the building could represent an opportunity for historians to explore the darker moments of Texas history
But the landowners are resistant to allowing historians to study it
Lisa Gray
acting op-ed editor for The Houston Chronicle’s
has written about this building and what it means for Texas history
Gray says the building served as a sugar purgery – where sugarcane was crushed into a gritty
most of the work was performed by enslaved people.
“It was impossible to grow sugar before the Civil War without slaves and this particular plantation
was one of the largest slave plantations in the state,” Gray says
“There were more than 200 slaves there
was the third-largest slaveholder in the state
He started growing cotton but switched to sugar and became one of the richest men in Texas and a major supporter of the Confederacy during the Civil War.
a Louisiana archaeologist who studies antebellum sugar plantations
recognized the Sienna building’s specialized floor through photos posted by a Fort Bend history buff who labeled it a sugar barn
Gray says although the building holds historical significance
The development’s management wrote in a statement to Gray that they plan to keep the building as it is until it is acquired by another owner
“It’s this remnant of a past that we don’t talk much about in Texas,” Gray says
“This part of Texas was very much the Old South and sugar was the cruelest crop in all of plantation history
Other kinds of plantations had more births than deaths among slaves
This is a reminder that Texas was not really just a frontier
Gray says while it’s possible a government entity could step in to provide protection for this building
that there could be some incentives financially to preserve it
or maybe Sienna will recognize it as a selling point
that this history is something that people want to see survive,” Gray says

MISSOURI CITY
Texas – A woman died and a child was injured Thursday after they were hit by a SUV in the Sienna Plantation neighborhood near Missouri City
All the neighbors in the Sienna Plantation neighborhood are hoping the same

and her 6-year-old son crossing the street
"There's an elementary school just to the north of her in Sienna Ranch
and apparently she walks her child to school," Fort Bend County Sheriff Troy Nehls said
where he is listed in stable condition and expected to survive

An ambulance took his mother to another hospital in critical condition
who had just dropped her grandchildren off at school
"She was actually coming back because she takes grandchildren to school
so she uses this road almost every day," Nehls said

He said they were reconstructing the scene to learn more about the crash
He didn't know how fast the driver was going when she hit the mother and son
please save them.' That's what I prayed," Silas said
Other neighbors said they had requested a crossing guard at the intersection
Fort Bend ISD said they hadn't received any complaints
Residents came by all day on Thursday to leave flowers and balloons at a makeshift memorial near the crash site
Several residents told Channel 2 News there aren't enough school zone signs or street lights in the area
“If you try to find anybody at the HOA office to address these situations
they give you the run around and they pass the buck," said resident Daniel Rehem
"The Association is very saddened to learn of the tragic car accident this morning resulting in the death of a mother and injury to her son
Our thoughts go out to their family and those impacted by this tragedy
the request for additional street signs would go to Fort Bend County; and requests for more streetlights involve multiple parties
Requests for an additional street light would go to CenterPoint
City of Missouri City and/or Fort Bend County for approval
In some instances FBC will ask the Association to help facilitate a formal request and when that occurs
we work with our Village Representatives accordingly
I am not aware of anyone asking for additional signs or street lights in the area of the accident."
