Profile Mining and Metals F | F | 5-Day Forecast °F Now | Forecast Sierra Madre’s historic Wistaria Festival will return on Saturday offering an up-close-and-personal public viewing of the world’s largest blossoming plant just three months after the devastating Eaton Fire swept through the region and burned portion of the town This spring celebration represents both an annual tradition and a now a vibrat symbol of community recovery following one of the area’s most destructive wildfires in recent history The 2025 Sierra Madre Wistaria Festival will take place on Saturday The event’s centerpiece is the magnificent wistaria vine certified by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s largest blossoming plant and considered one of the seven horticultural wonders of the world This botanical marvel began its remarkable journey in 1894 when it was purchased as a modest one-gallon container plant for 75 cents and planted near the front porch of a home on Carter Avenue the Chinese Lavender wistaria variety grew so vigorously that it eventually engulfed and destroyed the original house necessitating the construction of a new residence to accommodate its expanding reach the vine spans more than an acre across two private properties and produces up to 1.5 million blossoms at peak bloom Sierra Madre deliberately uses the spelling “wistaria” instead of the more common “wisteria,” as a reference to American physician Dr This distinctive spelling has become part of the local tradition and identity of the festival The one-day event transforms downtown Sierra Madre into a vibrant celebration of community and nature Visitors can explore more than 100 craft and food vendors lining the streets browse local shops (all of which will be open during the festival) and enjoy the Sierra Madre Auto Show featuring vintage and classic automobiles Due to the vine’s location on private property and limited parking in the residential area a shuttle service will operate from downtown Sierra Madre to the vine throughout the festival day Shuttle tickets are available at different price points: general admission (ages 13-64) costs $17.85 This year’s Wistaria Festival carries special significance as it represents one of the first major community celebrations in Sierra Madre following the destructive Eaton Fire Sierra Madre itself was under evacuation orders during parts of the fire emergency The fire caused significant damage to public lands prompting the city to join Los Angeles County and Pasadena in filing lawsuits against Southern California Edison over alleged responsibility for the blaze The Wistaria Festival tradition stretches back nearly a century with various organizations having hosted viewings of the remarkable vine throughout its history when the Sierra Madre Woman’s Club hosted the festival an admission fee was collected for the first time and an astonishing 35,000 people visited during the three-week celebration Visitors interested in attending this unique event should plan ahead as the one-day-only nature of the vine viewing typically attracts substantial crowds to this charming foothill community Previous similar events have drawn up to 10,000 visitors XHTML: You can use these tags:

<del datetime=""> <s> The Sierra Madre Public Library was awarded $10,669,210 in state and federal grants to support a significant renovation and expansion project. The improvements include a 5,000-square-foot addition, ADA and seismic upgrades, enhanced green space, new HVAC, electrical and plumbing systems, asbestos abatement, window replacements, and the installation of fire suppression equipment. Due to rising construction costs, the grant funding did not fully cover the total renovation expense. To ensure the Library Meaningful Improvement Project could move forward, the City of Sierra Madre allocated an additional $1.8 million from city reserve funds. Altogether, $12,499,210 has been dedicated to the design and construction of the project. However, this amount does not include the cost of furniture, fixtures, and equipment (FF&E) needed to outfit the interior. Fortunately, the community and local nonprofit organizations have stepped in to help. In June 2023, the Friends of the Sierra Madre Library pledged $400,000 from the Mary Tumilty Fund, $145,000 from the Partners’ Fund, and $150,000 from their general fund toward FF&E costs—a generous starting contribution of $695,000. In addition, the Sierra Madre Historical Preservation Society has donated proceeds from its programs in support of the Library’s FF&E goals. Further support has come through a trust established by Robert S. Day, which provides the Library with $25,000 annually for capital or operating expenses. Since its inception in January 2020, the trust has grown to $125,000, which the Library also plans to allocate toward FF&E needs. Combined, these contributions bring the initial FF&E funding total to $820,000—helping to cover essential interior items such as desks, chairs, tables, computers, shelves, and more. The Sierra Madre Library Foundation continues its dedicated efforts to raise additional funds for the Library’s interior furnishings. With community support, the Foundation is helping to realize a modern, 21st-century Library that will serve as a hub for learning, connection, and civic engagement for generations to come. That is not the case this time,” Bartlett said. Sierra Madre has eight debris basins that protect neighborhoods downstream from flooding and mudflows. All of those were filled to capacity during last month’s storm, Bartlett said. At least one dam that sits above the canyon neighborhood in the northeast part of the city overflowed during the February storm, causing damaging mudflows in that area. “While county and city contractors have been working tirelessly to clear [the debris basins], we are not starting from empty,” Bartlett said. “This means that any significant rainfall could lead to severe flooding, mudflows and debris flows.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by LAist (@laistofficial) County and city crews have been working around the clock to clear debris basins — the county manages 19 from The Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) announced the closures as it begins independent soil testing across all campuses to ensure the safety of students and staff This precautionary move follows recent city-led testing in two Pasadena neighborhoods which revealed lead concentrations above 80 parts per million While those levels do not require cleanup under current health guidelines city officials have called for broader evaluation Last Friday, the City of Pasadena closed two public parks after Los Angeles County health officials found high lead levels in those specific areas Although the lead was not found on school property PUSD emphasized that its testing is being conducted independently of the county’s investigation and is focused on all areas of exposed soil across its schools the district clarified: “The recent findings were not from school grounds and at this time there is no indication that any of our campuses — or district sites — are unsafe or that anyone is in immediate danger.” The district said it will provide updates as testing progresses and plans to reopen the fields only once they are confirmed safe for student use Print Owning a home in Southern California isn’t just a dream for humans Apparently the bears want in on the market too Just ask residents and city officials in Sierra Madre who in the last few years have seen their furry four-legged neighbors amble out of the forest and barge into their cars kitchens and living rooms as though the humans were just keeping the place warm for them “This is a new phenomenon,” Sierra Madre City Atty “Something interesting happened in the past two years I don’t know how they’re teaching each other Bear sightings are nothing new for Sierra Madre and the other communities in the foothills of the Angeles National Forest but in the last few years the bears have become bolder in their hunt for food there were about 100 reports of bear sightings in Sierra Madre but no reports of break-ins into homes those numbers jumped to 380 sightings and 50 break-ins “It was in the last five years that they’ve really become a nuisance,” homeowner Sara Alden told CBS2 about one ornery ursine that had recently broken into her family’s home and tore up the place. “They’re getting more brazen, they really are.” Climate & Environment Victor the bear was notorious for mooching meals at Mammoth Lakes campgrounds, but when he crashed a steak and wine dinner, things escalated quickly. Sierra Madre has a mix of no harm, no foul bears and habituated bears, Wilson said. But there was one bear that had been a particularly bad neighbor of late. Sometime recently, it found an empty house hidden among the narrow, tree-lined streets on Alta Vista Drive that enjoy scenic views overlooking the San Gabriel Valley and moved in. While a BMW sits in the driveway gathering dust and overgrown shrubs hide the felled trees littering the yard, the bear apparently made itself at home. Neighbors began to complain about break-ins and a terrible smell emanating from the home. Since 2019, city officials have sent the homeowner multiple violation notices for the property including about the tenant bear, to no avail. Numerous attempts to reach the homeowner by The Times were unsuccessful. “This morning we had to call the police as the bear broke down our fence” and broke into a neighboring home that had been red-tagged, a resident wrote to the city’s code enforcement staff last month. “We have also observed the bear climbing in and out of the window of the shed on the property and believe it may be living in there.” The bear required a different type of hazing than the others. With laws barring government officials from entering homes without a warrant, the city had little recourse beyond papering the home with violations. So last month, they got creative. The city filed an application for an inspection and abatement warrant and got it signed by a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge. The application included neighbors’ complaints and several photos of the property in their application, including an image of the bear leaning against a wood railing at the home. On Aug. 15, staff with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife arrived at the home and found bear tracks, a broken window and scratch marks on the windowsill “consistent with black bear marks,” wrote Lt. Jonathan Garcia with Fish and Wildlife. There were indications the bear had been living there, including feces, rotten food, wrappers and containers. The smell from the outdoor shed and the home “were emitting odors associated with organic matter that are attracting varmints and black bears,” Garcia wrote. The home has since been boarded up, Giragosian, the city attorney, said. Sierra Madre will bill the homeowner for the work done on the property including tree trimming and cleanup. Wildlife officials ask people to not feed wild animals and to remove ripe vegetables and fruits from the ground. Residents can also install motion sensitive lights around their properties and secure crawl spaces to avoid leaving an open invitation for wild animals. One person or less is killed on average by black bears each year in the United States, with a population of over 900,000 black bears across the country, according to Fish and Wildlife. But in response to the numerous bear encounters in the surrounding foothill communities, residents have since started their own bear watch groups to respond to the growing problem. “The residents are kind of torn, because Sierra Madre has a lot of people who love wildlife and they want to protect the bears,” Giragosian said. “There are also residents who are afraid for their lives.” The bear that was living on Alta Vista Drive has not been seen since. The concerns: With little vegetation left to hold the mountainsides up, the danger is that mudflows could overfill debris basins with any significant rain, said Sierra Madre Fire Chief Brent Bartlett.
