Hardin County — A 19 year old man is dead after authorities say he crashed his pickup into a utility pole early Wednesday morning about four miles west of Silsbee in Hardin County
The DPS identifies the victim as Zachary Morris
Captain Kevin Hussey with the DPS says the driver was headed west on FM 1122 near FM 418 at 3:20 a.m
Wednesday when he failed to make the curve and entered the ditch
then crashed head-on into a utility pole and then a large tree
knocking down the pole and several transformers
He says the man wasn't wearing a seat belt and was ejected
Chief Robin Jones of the Silsbee Volunteer Fire Department tells us the victim was in his early 20s
The impact of the crash caused the pickup to briefly catch fire
More than 1,000 people people woke up without power due to the crash
but closed again when Entergy crews began working to restore power
KFDM's Patrina Adger was live at the scene all morning long
passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Tuesday
to Mary Goss Armour and Spencer Davis Armour
He was the oldest of three boys and grew up with a deep love for the outdoors and a strong work ethic that carried him throughout his life
It all started when he bought a wrecked 1953 Oldsmobile from its owner for $16.50 in 1960
he went on to invest every nickel and minute in a risky business venture that became one of the largest auto salvage yards this side of Waco
Spencer took great pride in his work and building a life rooted in dedication
He loved being a resident of Silsbee and sharing his success through his generosity with those in the community
He served on the Silsbee City Council in the 1970s and was a board member at First National Bank of Silsbee
He was also a longtime member of First Baptist Church Silsbee
Spencer had a deep appreciation for nature
and spending time outdoors—especially if it involved operating machinery
Whether he was bush hogging a field or bulldozing a path through the woods
he could often be found on the golf course at Silsbee Country Club
He never met a stranger and made friends wherever he went
His quick wit and easy smile left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him
Spencer was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-three years
Sammie Cole Armour; his parents; and his brothers
IV of Fort Worth; Madison Montanari of Dallas; and Maret Montanari of Beaumont; great-grandchildren
and Gracie Serold; Spencer “Quinn” V and Violet Armour; and numerous extended family members and dear friends
Our family would like to express our endless gratitude to Virgie for the love and compassion she showed Spencer in his final years
She was Sammie’s caregiver starting in 2019 and began caring for Spencer soon after Sammie’s passing and became his best friend and confidante
Virgie will always be a special member of our family
A great big thank you to the Silsbee Police Department Officers Rogers
and Ramirez for their kindness after Spencer’s passing along with the lights and siren display as they left his home
Our appreciation and thanks also go out to Heart-to-Heart Hospice of Jasper for their guidance
A gathering of family and friends will be held at Broussard’s
followed by the funeral service at 2:00 p.m
Interment and a celebration of life will take place immediately after the service at Hardin Memorial Park
Spencer was a Great Neighbor and loved hearing his stories about the neighborhood and when I our house was built
I am sad that he has passed but I know he is smiling knowing that he is with the Love of his life again
He will be missed and knowing that we will not have the wave every time he passed by or even a short conversion asking how he day is going
I just know the Gardens in Heaven will be plenty
It was a privilege and pleasure to know Mr
Lots of childhood memories with Mr Armour J and his business
My dad worked for him most of my childhood
I bet him and my dad Glenn McWilliams are catching up like old times
I first met Spencer back in the late 1970’s I guess it was
I have worked in collision repair shops and worked as an insurance appraiser a couple of times in my 50+ year career
I can’t begin to calculate how many dollars in parts that we bought from Mr
great conversations we shared about anything and everything
Spencer was a very good and successful businessman and one of the “Last Mohicans” insofar as being an old fashioned business man with good old fashioned ethics
I will not be able to attend the funeral due to a conflicting doctor’s appointment
To the Armour family I am deeply saddened to hear the passing of Spencer
He was a great man and will be missed by many
I’m smiling today thinking of how much I looked forward to Spenser’s visits to Sabine Parish as a child and teenager
It always made me happy to see he and Jimmy
Maybe that was because I remember how excited Mom (Sue Walker) got when she knew they were coming
She baked pies in preparation for the visit
There were always funny and mischievous stories told when those two came
91 years is a great run and Spencer’s life proves that
Our family will forever be greater for the time we had Sammie and Spenser in it

Hardin County — A whooping cough outbreak now exists in Hardin County
according to information Judge Wayne McDaniel provided to KFDM/Fox 4 News
CDC WHOOPING COUGH INFORMATION
Health Director Sharon Whitley says there are three confirmed cases at Lumberton High School and one probable case
one confirmed case and three probable cases at Lumberton Middle School
and one confirmed case and two probable cases at West Hardin High School
She says there are two confirmed cases at Silsbee Elementary and one probable case that she says is expected to become confirmed
Silsbee ISD posted a statement that the Health Department says there isn't a whooping cough outbreak in Silsbee ISD
The district has announced the cancellation of classes Friday due to a large number of illnesses among students and staff in Silsbee ISD
but didn't link them to whooping cough
Whitley says the students with whooping cough are up to date on vaccinations
She says it's adults who are giving pertussis to the children
and the Health Department will offer a clinic in the near future to work with adults
Silsbee ISD says while privacy laws prevent the disclosure of the affected students' identities or additional details
SISD is "actively addressing the situation to ensure the safety and well-being of all students and staff.."
The district notified the Hardin County Health Department
SISD says it's "enhancing sanitation procedures across all campuses and is following the health department’s guidance
The district is in compliance with all state-mandated vaccination requirements."
SISD says parents and guardians are urged to monitor their children for any symptoms of whooping cough and to contact their healthcare provider if concerns arise
Educational materials about whooping cough
along with a letter from the Hardin County Health Department
have been sent to all parents and guardians through the email that is on file with the district
the resources are accessible on the district’s website under the Health Services section
and we appreciate the cooperation of our parents
and health officials as we work to maintain a safe and healthy learning environment,” said Kirsten Martin
The Silsbee Independent School District says it's committed to providing a safe and nurturing educational environment for all students
Whitley says a probable case is when you're in contact with a confirmed positive and you show signs and symptoms of whooping cough
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says whooping cough
Whooping cough may begin like a common cold
Treating whooping cough early with antibiotics may make the infection less serious
Whitley says the Hardin County Health Department is working with the school districts to send out informational material to parents
"The holiday season is here and family and friends will be gathering," says Whitley
"We're trying to prevent an outbreak
We received our first confirmed case a week before Thanksgiving
and the other came in after Thanksgiving."
Lumberton ISD released a statement Tuesday afternoon:
"Lumberton ISD was notified by the Hardin County Health Department of confirmed cases of Pertussis in the District
The Health Department has advised our District that this is not an outbreak
extra mitigation measures are being taken by the District in addition to our routine sanitation procedures at all campuses
the district is following the guidance of the Health Department and medical professionals
Lumberton ISD is proud to report that our district is 100% in compliance with all State vaccination requirements."
The CDC has posted key information about whooping cough:
-Early symptoms of pertussis (whooping cough) can look like a common cold
-Whooping cough is known for the "whoop" noise when someone gasps for air after a coughing fit
-Babies and young children may not cough but may have difficulty breathing instead
It usually takes 5 to 10 days for symptoms to appear after exposure to the bacteria that cause whooping cough
Sometimes symptoms don't develop for as long as 3 weeks
Whooping cough appears similar to a common cold early on
Healthcare providers often don't suspect or diagnose it until more severe symptoms appear
Early symptoms can last for 1 to 2 weeks and usually include:
Many babies with whooping cough don't cough at all
they may have apnea (life-threatening pauses in breathing)
The apnea may cause cyanosis (to turn blue) or they may struggle to breathe
whooping cough may seem like a common cold for the entire illness
One to 2 weeks after the first symptoms start
These coughing fits usually last 1 to 6 weeks but can last for up to 10 weeks
The cough generally gets worse and becomes more common as the illness continues
Make a high-pitched "whoop" when they inhale after a coughing fit
Those who get these coughing fits say it's the worst cough of their lives

His tenure saw the team achieve five state tournament appearances and secure two state championships

I've gotten an opportunity to come back here twice and had success both times."
As he prepares to leave the gym where his journey with the Tigers began
