— Central Kitsap Fire & Rescue responded to a fire at the M&T Cafe along Silverdale Way Sunday evening
Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office posted about the fire on X at 9:28 p.m
Both lanes of Silverdale Way northbound in the 10400 block are currently blocked as crews work to put out the fire
Authorities are urging the public to avoid the area until further notice
It is unknown how the fire started and if anyone was injured as a result
Just before stepping into the batter's box on her first trip to the plate Tuesday
a fan yelled out "stay hot kid" to Silverdale Baptist senior Gabbie Hensley
The Lady Seahawks' cleanup hitter answered the call right away with a crucial two-run home run over the center field fence to help spur her Division II-A powerhouse team to a 3-2 home win over nine-time reigning Division II-AA state champion Baylor
While Hensley's mighty right-handed bat at the plate has provided big numbers for Silverdale since her eighth grade season
her duties as the team's starting catcher have been just as valuable
Hensley was recognized by the public address announcer for reaching 1,000 career innings at catcher for the Lady Seahawks
shortly afterward worked with sophomore ace Bita Cox to retire five outs on as many pitches from the last out of the top of the fifth to the first out of the seventh inning

"Gabbie means so much to this program," Silverdale head coach Jackie Freelend said
"I just can't imagine not having her back there
She is like having another coach on the field
I have taken so much pride in watching her grow into a great leader throughout the years
Seeing her come into her own has been amazing."
Hensley has now had an extra-base hit in eight straight games for the Lady Seahawks (18-4-1) as she leads the team with a .463 batting average along with her 20 RBIs and 15 extra-base hits
"I hit a lot and preparation is the key," said Hensley
who has caught two seven-inning perfect games in her prep career
My best swing is better than whatever a pitcher can throw me
We have put in so much work through the years and being a part of one of the state's top softball program's has been amazing."
Baylor (10-4) showed resilience in the defeat as back-to-back doubles with two outs by leadoff hitter Olivia Elkhill and Chloe Cunningham pushed across the visitor's first run in the third inning
Elkhill then delivered another clutch two-out hit as the junior hammered an opposite-field home run over the right field fence to tie the game at two in the fifth
She had just missed a home run on her double earlier
which struck off the top of the left-center field fence
Cox locked in with Hensley from there as the star hurler recorded a pop-out to end the fifth
Cox recorded three outs on as many pitches and also recorded a popout on the first pitch of the seventh
She completed her complete game with her 9th and 10th strikeouts for her sixth outing of the season with double-digit punchouts
Cox improved to 11-1 overall and now has 121 strikeouts compared to just 10 walks over 83 innings to go with a miniscule 0.67 ERA
"Bita keeps getting better every game," Freelend said
"She started strong but then gave up some hits in the middle
But then she was able to bear down and got the outs we needed
That was huge because this was a close one that could have gone either way
Kelli (Smith) always has a great team out there and has some great hitters in that lineup
It was a battle and Bita did a great job stepping up."
Sophomore slugger Jaliyah Whitaker delivered the go-ahead hit in the bottom of the fifth as her line-drive to center field kept climbing for an RBI double to drive in Heidi Bryant
who hit her team-leading fourth triple to set the table
Hensley and senior teammate Emry Masterson drug the field together as part of their postgame duties after another memorable night on the field
"You have to take in every moment," Hensley said
"They go by way faster than you can even imagine
It's amazing to see the softball power we have worked to become here at Silverdale."

Two teenagers are in custody after reportedly shooting at a man and his son in the Kitsap Mall parking lot on Saturday afternoon
According to Kevin McCarty of the Kitsap County Sheriff's Office
a 40-year-old man and his 17-year-old son of Neah Bay were driving on Silverdale Way near WinCo Foods around 5 p.m.
identified as a 16-year-old boy and a 17-year-old boy
the man pulled in the mall parking lot and parked on the east side of WinCo
when the teenagers ran toward him and began shooting
as none of the shots struck the man or his son
A couple witnesses in the nearby WinCo parking lot told deputies they saw and heard the gunshots
they were able to catch the juveniles near the shopping complex that houses Apollo Nail Spa
According to a probable cause statement filed in Kitsap County Superior Court
one of the firearms recovered from suspects
was confirmed to be stolen from its original owner in Tukwila two years ago
The other gun was described as a green and silver 9mm handgun in court documents
which was found on the roof of a business after the suspect was seen throwing it up there
Court documents said video surveillance footage from the grocery store showed several shoppers at the parking lot at the time of the shooting
Seventeen shell casings were discovered by officers at the scene
and the truck of an individual who had been inside shopping was hit as well
one listed as a Port Orchard resident and the second without an address given
were each arrested and charged Monday with two counts of first-degree assault in Kitsap County Superior Court
The busy thoroughfare through Kitsap's retail core is likely to see regular delays in coming months from a major paving project about to begin on Silverdale Way
Silverdale Way will be repaved from just north of its intersection at Bucklin Hill Road
as well as a 1,000-foot portion of Bucklin Hill Road east of Silverdale Way
The work will avoid the intersection at Silverdale Way and Bucklin Hill
leaving it open for regular driving patterns
though closures are planned for different times of day to help lessen issues for drivers
up to one lane in each direction will be closed at times to accommodate specific projects
and driveway access to businesses will remain open
drivers can expect traffic on Silverdale Way to be reduced to one lane in each direction
with alternating traffic controlled by flaggers
There are also improvements planned for pedestrians
ramps that are ADA compliant and signals planned to be rebuilt at the road's intersections with Kitsap Mall Boulevard
the entire southwest corner of the intersection will be rebuilt
according to project manager Theresa Smith
to eliminate a so-called "slip lane" created by the existing island
The new pathway will create a shorter crossing for pedestrians
as that intersection has been cited for occasional rear-end crashes by drivers turning south onto Silverdale Way
the pedestrian crossing at the traffic light on Bucklin Hill Road at Silverdale Plaza shopping center will be rebuilt
Improvements to the stormwater system along Silverdale Way
including replacing aging pipes underground
Two retail stores in Silverdale are saying farewell to Kitsap County due to corporate cuts
The Columbia Factory Store on Mickleberry Road is closing
according to several signs placed around the store that mark "STORE CLOSING" and "THIS LOCATION ONLY." Just across a parking lot to the east from that store
the Party City location on Ridgetop Boulevard has closed
thanks customers for supporting the business over the years
Columbia Factory Store didn't respond to Kitsap Sun's multiple requests on the reasons and an estimated day of closure. According to the company

They turned out to be popular with businesses around Old Town
By the next October a larger volunteer group
the planting volunteers included the Central Kitsap Community Council

the youth group from Peninsula Bible Fellowship to sling mulch around
and most business along Washington and Byron streets chipping in to add more bulbs
McCray's effort turned into an additional 7,490

Fabry had joined last fall's planting party and was inspired by what McCray had organized because it reminded her of fun daffodil celebrations in other cities she and her family were stationed at
talking about whether it would be possible to pull something similar off when the flowers started to bloom
encouraged by Kitsap County Commissioner Katie Walters
So with less than three weeks to pull it together
the inaugural Silverdale Daffodil Festival was launched
art projects for kids and a daffodil "promenade" for participants to walk
"It just shows you something you don't need as much time to plan as you think you need," McCray said this week
"We're just trying to do it as good as we can."
"She knows everybody..." Fabry said of McCray
after the pair walked the Old Town neighborhood Monday morning
soliciting some final donations and sharing the love McCray has for her neighborhood with a pair of tourists they met from the Olympic Peninsula who happened to be in Silverdale
"She really embodies the sense of community
Organizers are encouraging residents to show up wearing spring colors or bright yellow
scooters or even cars with yellow to get in the spirt for a few hours or community connection
No streets will be closed for this month's event
but Fabry said the promenade walk around the waterfront area has the potential to become a parade if the festival catches on

SILVERDALE — Not long after Macy's announced the pending closure of its Kitsap Mall location
a Las Vegas-based commercial real estate firm that owns several properties in Kitsap County
The new mall owner believes that it can retain existing tenants
and strengthen the mall's role as Silverdale's retail hub
Rhino Investments Group announced the acquisition in a statement on Monday, saying that it reflects the firm's "continued commitment to enhancing its portfolio with high-quality assets in dynamic
high-barrier-to-entry markets." The gross selling price of the mall was $25,725,000
according to documents filed in Kitsap County
"Kitsap Mall's dominant position in the market
and strong tenant roster make it an exceptional opportunity for us to unlock further value," Sanjiv Chopra
In early January Macy's, one of the mall's anchor tenants, announced its plan to close the location at the mall among the 66 locations the retailer will close during the first few months this year
Rhino said the acquisition was made knowing Macy's intention to do so and said the firm is working with Macy's as the business begins its closing process at the mall
Macy's replacement still unknownRhino hasn't made any announcement on a potential replacement for the wing of the mall being vacated by Macy's
The real estate firm is working with several tenants and hopes to make leasing announcements in the next quarter or two
"We are excited to bring tenants that will provide entertainment concepts to the property
thus again making Kitsap Mall the capstone of the Kitsap County's retail experience again," Chopra said
The mall will continue to be managed by JLL
"We believe that we will be successful in attracting new and retaining existing tenants now that the long-term ownership question has been answered", said Becca Wall, VP of Operations at Rhino in the statement, referring to a foreclosure of the mall in 2021 that had been delayed multiple times.
"Many tenants who have been hesitant to renew longer-term leases or invest in new locations at Kitsap Mall are now showing renewed interest in the property," Wall said
Last week the national retailer Kohl's announced it is closing 27 "underperforming" locations around the country
an anchor tenant at the facility's north end for the past 15 years
was not on the company's list of planned closures
in addition to a large open lot along Silverdale Way where a former auto repair facility was recently cleared
Rhino owns the over 7.5-acre District at Mile Hill at 1735 Village Lane SE
The property is now occupied by Dollar Tree
"We are excited to continue building on the mall's success and enhance its role as the retail hub for the Silverdale community," Chopra said

Thursday night’s boys' soccer game between top-ranked Notre Dame and Silverdale resembled a game of Slip ‘N Slide after torrential rainfall soaked the field
but that did not stop them from defeating the Seahawks 4 to 0
one of the last boys soccer games that will be played on a grass field that is to be replaced with turf in the coming school year
maintaining possession of the ball for much of the game
and taking advantage of opportunities at the goal to score
It was easy to see why the team is number one in the district and why they hope to have a chance at state this year
scored twice in the first half of the game
but Silverdale stopped multiple goal attempts
with strong defensive efforts by Davy Hammel and Brody Finch
Fighting Irish junior Luke Rossellini scored one goal and sophomore Matthew Bacher scored the final goal of the game
The Silverdale goalie was kept busy much of the night and had some good stops against a relentless offense by Notre Dame
was positive about the win but also felt his team could have played better as he looks ahead to post-season play
Asked about his mindset going into the game
“I thought that we need to come out strong…after our last win against Boyd…keep that same energy going to this game and clinch the win.” He was clearly excited about his team’s position going into tournament play
“I think we can play very well when we work hard enough
we're gonna beat anybody in the state and win the state.”
was glad the Seahawks were able to enjoy senior night
He knew they were going up against a strong team
but he commended his team for playing with heart
“We always play to win and we lost against Boyd seven to zero yesterday and I think we bounced back pretty good.” When asked what the Seahawks could have done differently
“I think they left everything they had on the field
but sometimes they just overcomplicated things and instead of playing the open man
they tried to force balls we didn't need to.”
said the team was confident they could hold their own against Notre Dame
reflecting that “no one’s unbeatable.” He thought they played well tonight despite the loss
“It's probably one of the best performances we had in the first half all season
Askew was already feeling nostalgic about his time with the team
“I just decided to be out there with the rest of the seniors and the rest of my teammates…I love the team
they represented the school and the Lord well
They played together.” When asked what they could have done better
“We just had a couple of mistakes in the back that cost us some goals…I thought we played really well against a really great team…The boys have been ready to play and play for each other and play for the Lord
And so they were excited about a chance to compete…Our underclassman wanted to play their hearts out for their senior friends
and the seniors wanted to leave it all out on the field.”
Notre Dame will have a bye in the first round of post-season play and are more hopeful than ever that their record in the district will translate to a shot at state this year
Notre Dame 2 2 -4

— A woman was left injured after an SUV crashed through the wall of a Starbucks in Silverdale last Friday
10 at the coffee shop located at 10705 Silverdale Way NW around 12:30 p.m.
according to the Kitsap County Sheriff's Office
A 70-year-old woman told authorities the SUV knocked her out of her chair when it broke through the shop's glass doors
Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue evaluated her at the scene and she drove herself to the hospital for further care later
The 83-year-old driver told authorities she did not know how the collision happened as she was pulling into a handicapped parking stall outside the store
the location is still open despite the crash
SILVERDALE -- A 47-unit apartment complex may come to the shores of Dyes Inlet off Bucklin Hill Road
bordered by the Silverdale Beach Hotel and Old Mill Park
after receiving an approval recently from the Kitsap County Hearing Examiner
received approval for a design revision that increased the number of housing units
building height and adopting other modifications on January 3
That decision allows the project developers
to build 10 feet above the 35-foot height limit for shoreline buildings
and reduce the perimeter setback and the amount of required parking
The decision also greenlighted a 47-unit iteration of the apartment complex
bumping up the density from its previous proposal for 13 units about a decade ago
Current plans call for the North Beach Apartments to feature 33 two-bedroom
with an average square footage of about 1,000-square-feet
while the rest of the units will be either one-bedroom or one-bedroom-plus-den units
The building will offer 76 parking spaces for tenants in a parking garage on the first floor and additional spaces outside
The apartment complex will be similar to Silverdale’s Rivulet apartments on Blaine Avenue NW
built by the South West Group just across Bucklin Hill Road from the North Beach site
one-bedroom unit currently lists for about $1,600 per month
while a two-bedroom unit goes for about $2,400 a month
More from Silverdale: Plaza near Kitsap Mall adding retailer, dentist and new restaurant
the North Beach Apartments will also offer communal amenities like an outdoor gathering space
private decks for each unit and views of either Dyes Inlet or Old Mill Park
The previous design of the North Beach Apartments
was approved by the hearing examiner in 2015
which included the 10-foot height increase
But developers let the original permits expire after the project didn’t pencil out
The denser reconfiguration is actually “much more efficient as far as the use of space on the property,” said Jeff Smith
senior planner for Kitsap County’s Department of Community Development
The mass of the building is roughly the same as its 13-unit design
sits on the north shoreline of Dyes Inlet and is bordered on the water side by a section of the Clear Creek Trail
The jurisdiction of the Shoreline Master Program runs halfway through the property and contains a bulkhead
according to documents from the hearing examiner’s decision
the property used to host a cement batch plant
which added over 10 feet of fill on the property
There haven’t been any contaminants identified there
A SEPA mitigation determination of non-significance was issued in 2014
concluding that there would be no significant impact caused by the project
the decision of the hearing examiner noted
but developers will be responsible for enhancing the shoreline
The project will have minimal impact on its adjacent wetland or Old Mill Park
and is designed to cause no net loss the ecological function in the area
The developers will also keep the 50-foot buffer intact that is required along Dyes Inlet
They will also be tasked with improving the Clear Creek Trail
which will remain accessible to the public
the new apartment complex is not anticipated to significantly change service levels at the existing traffic signal
A four-way intersection on NW Bucklin Hill Road next to Taco Bell is where residents would access the property
according to its completed traffic impact analysis
The complex won’t block sunlight to the park or shoreline
and it isn’t expected to adversely impact neighboring properties with additional noise
save for some constriction sounds while the building is being erected
The North Beach Apartments aren’t intended to change the character of its neighborhood in Silverdale
and its position will provide some benefits for residents in the regional center with Old Mill Park
“It should fit in nicely into this project area,” Smith said
The apartment project still needs to receive a couple permits before construction can begin
but approval from the hearing examiner serves as a large portion of the go-ahead
Daybreak Development declined to comment for the story ahead of those permit approvals
The developers must have the project started within two years
and will have up to five years to complete it
Baxter estimates that construction could start in the summer of 2026 at the earliest and would be completed at the end of 2027

Shari’s Cafe and Pies in Silverdale could be the second of the Oregon-based chain to leave Kitsap County within two months
after its property owners sued for eviction over months of unpaid rent
held a lease with Bremerton-based Jasonn Properties LLC at the restaurant since 1991
according to documents filed Wednesday in Kitsap County Superior Court
according to the complaint for unlawful detainer
the Silverdale Shari’s had racked up over $153,000 in unpaid rent
added that Shari’s had not paid property taxes for the second half of 2023 or the first half of 2024
leaving the company to cover more than $12,800 owed
Jasonn Properties filed the complaint after it served Shari’s on July 29 with a five-day notice to pay rent or vacate
both of which Shari's failed to do within the time allotted
The property owners are also suing for payment on the unpaid rent through August
reimbursement for the property taxes and its ensuing legal fees
Should the Silverdale Shari’s close as a result of its own missed payments and legal battles
the county would be left with only one Shari’s Restaurant
in the retail complex at the exit of Highway 16 and Sedgwick Road
Shari’s closed another restaurant in Yakima on July 8
and shut down its last locations in Tacoma and the Tri-Cities in late July and April
Management at Shari’s headquarters could not be reached for comment

The 40-year-old man now suspected of vandalizing a public works project on Newberry Hill Road in August was a former employee on the construction crew
and identified in part from his suspected involvement in a second incident of vandalism in Bremerton
According to charging documents from the Kitsap County Prosecuting Attorney's office
a search warrant for Aaron Childers was filed after characteristics matched video surveillance footage from the crime scene
That evidence matched up with another incident at a business where Childers had worked
Kitsap County security cameras captured a person driving a SUV into the construction site just before 11 p.m
The suspect then used keys to unlock and drive the excavators around the job site
and video showed the suspect attempting to kick out the excavator's window from the inside as well as shatter windows of a water truck
When the Kitsap County Sheriff's Office arrived on the scene the next morning
the owner of the construction company contracted by Kitsap County said that Childers was the only other operator that briefly worked with the crew and could have access to the machines' keys as well as knowledge to maneuver them
The owner said Childers was let go after a couple days due to "odd behavior."
Background: Vandalism at construction site on Newberry Hill under investigation
DNA samples were collected from the equipment and a shoe print was identified from inside the large excavator's window that did not match any of the present employees
It was forwarded to the Washington State Patrol's crime lab for identification
which determined a possible match with the Merrell Jungle Moc shoe
The related incident took place in November
KCSO responded to a malicious mischief call from the business that a man was breaking the windows of employee's vehicles outside
A witness at the scene identified Childers as the suspect
The witness said she believed Childers to be intoxicated
A plate search on Childers revealed he drove a red 2022 Toyota 4Runner
which matched the SUV silhouette from the security camera footage
When Childers was located and arrested for suspicion of the crime at the florist shop
deputies observed he was wearing the same Jungle Mocs as the shoeprint from the WSP report
What was the project for?: Culvert replacement closes Newberry Hill Road to through traffic
At least six pieces of heavy construction equipment were damaged in the vandalism
costing the county somewhere between $1 million to $1.5 million
Damages to the road were estimated to be over $500,000
Childers was arrested as a suspect for the Newberry Hill Road crime on Tuesday and is set to appear in Kitsap County Superior Court on Wednesday
He is facing a charge of first-degree malicious mischief
with several aggravating factors for how the crime impacted the community
He was in Kitsap County Jail as of Wednesday afternoon
Childers has also been convicted of multiple felonies since 2007
SILVERDALE -- Panda Express appears to finally be coming to Kitsap County
The “fast casual” Chinese American chain restaurant
is on its way through the permitting process
Permits have been filed for construction at 9551 Ridgetop Boulevard
including excavation of portions of the southwest section of the parking lot
The restaurant was originally slated for arrival in 2023
but switched hands to CFT NV Developments LLC in December 2022
shortly after the Kitsap Sun reported that early permits had been applied for by developers
sold the property to the new buyers for $1.2 million
A site development activity permit has been issued for the project and its building permit is ready to issue
said Kitsap County communication and outreach coordinator Alicia Adler
The Kitsap Sun contacted Panda Express for comment on the potential timeframe for construction or opening
Until the Silverdale location starts dishing out honey walnut shrimp, broccoli beef and fortune cookies, the closest Panda Express locations remain in Gig Harbor, Burien and North Seattle. There are over 70 locations in Washington State and more than 2,300 stores across the nation
One man was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of vandalizing a public works project on Newberry Hill Road that resulted in over a million dollars in damages and delays
making the road inoperable for almost five months and past the date students returned to school from summer break
The Kitsap County Sheriff's Office said in a statement on Facebook that after investigating for just under three months
a suspect was identified through evaluating forensic evidence
They declined to offer further specifics about the suspect's arrest
pending a decision on charges by the Kitsap County Prosecuting Attorney's office
Charges will be determined once the case has been reviewed by the prosecutor
This story will be updated as further developments in the case are made

highlighted by one photo that may grab your attention the same way it did 35 years ago: Why was a Port Orchard police officer driving a Chevy Camaro
eyes pop and the same question comes to many Port Orchard minds: What's that guy doing in a Camaro
and the short answer is he's having a ball
Mathews is drawing disbelieving stares this week as he drives around the city in his sleek
It's the unique options that make people look: the blue and red lights on the top and the door decals that say "Port Orchard Police."
The Camaro is the newest patrol car in the city fleet
and Police Chief Mathews hopes it will also become a rolling billboard that delivers a warning to drug dealers: "If you sell dope in my town
but it cost the city of Port Orchard only some work by the city attorney
A cocaine deal went down in the car two years ago
and the city quickly moved to seize it under a state law allowing police to confiscate vehicles used in illegal drug transactions
and the car went into covered storage for the duration of the legal battle
the state Court of Appeals ruled in the city's favor
and when the former owner declined to appeal further the car became the city's property
The Silverdale Lady Seahawks are building quite a successful program with their softball team and have now won the last two Division II-Class A state titles and three in the past six years
not counting the Covid year when the season was cancelled
Jackie Freeland has been the head coach for the past six years and has been blessed with some outstanding players
one of the latest being senior Gabbie Hensley
Hensley enrolled at Silverdale as a sixth grader and played softball in middle school for those first two years
She’s one of the best high school catchers around and has been the starter behind the plate for the past five springs
It’s hard to believe that her prep career will be over in the blink of an eye
but that doesn’t mean her softball days are over as she’s committed to play at the University of Kentucky next year
Gabbie is the middle of three children to Nikki and Brian Hensley
Ashton is the older brother who is a junior at UTC while younger sister Brooklyn is a freshman at Silverdale
was an All-State athlete at City High during his heyday
so her athletic ability comes quite naturally
Gabbie has played a little basketball in recent years
but softball is her sport and her leadership and ability behind the plate has been one of the main reasons that Silverdale has done so well in recent years
“I’ve been here since the sixth grade and it’s gotten better over the years
I don’t think it’s hit me yet that graduation is just around the corner
but my goal is to leave things better than I found them
I’ve grown as an athlete and as a person and my faith has gotten a lot stronger too
But I’m sure there’s life outside of Silverdale and I’m excited about those possibilities,” Gabbie said while sitting at the scorer’s table just behind home plate at Silverdale’s softball field earlier this week
“I love the girls on our softball team and we do a lot of team bonding
but I feel like we have a great chance to win for the third straight year
And what about the decision to play for the Kentucky Wildcats
“It’s such a great atmosphere up there as it felt like home away from home
I had a great visit up there and really felt wanted
I feel like their program is on the way up and I think I have a chance to help them next year if I just keep working hard
I took my official visit there in the fall and made my commitment on Oct
Freeland has been her high school coach for the past five years while Tim Thompson has been a Silverdale assistant who first got to know Gabbie when he coached her in middle school
Jeremy Higdon has been her club coach for the past five years
All have really nice and positive things to say about Gabbie
“Gabbie is just a great kid who is always smiling and happy to be here,” Freeland began
“She has been a true joy to coach and is really like another coach on the field
She knows that game as well as anyone and is our quarterback on the field
She’s one of the best catchers I’ve ever seen with a really strong arm
She’s also an outstanding hitter as she’s hitting cleanup for us this year
“She does a great job of keeping our pitchers calm and that’s a real gift
And she’s quickly approaching a thousand innings of high school catching
She’s always willing to do what it takes to win and is very even-keeled
“She’s the kind of player you want on your team and has been a lot to our program
We will surely miss her when she’s gone,” Freeland added
“I started coaching Gabbie in middle school
She always plays with value and not for value
but her approach to the game and to life doesn’t change
“She’s one of the most compassionate players we have and has a great relationship with all of her teammates
She’s the kind of young lady you’d like to have as your daughter
Watching her grow up has been quite a journey
We want her in the lineup every time we play
but she’s just a great kid who makes really good grades and has never been in trouble
You never have to raise your voice with her as she knows what she needs to do to improve and she makes the corrections she needs
We’ve had some great players over the years here and she’s just the last one,” Thompson added
Higdon has been her club coach for the past five years and works with her mainly in the fall and summer
He’s totally confident in her ability and knows that she’s made the right decision
“Gabbie is an incredible defensive catcher and also a great hitter who just keeps getting better
And she’s always been a tremendous leader from the first day I met her
She has all the talent needed to play at the next level and she will only get better
“She’s really special behind the plate and has a golden opportunity in front of her
She has all the tools and I’m totally confident she will make a positive impact with the Wildcats,” Higdon added during a phone conversation earlier in the week
There were only two seniors on last year’s team with Kennedy Stinson now playing at Western Kentucky and Ella Cunningham at Michigan State
Hensley is one of two seniors on this year’s team as well
Emry Masterson is planning to play softball at Wofford with Hensley going to Kentucky
has plans for a double major with a focus on accounting and finance
It will be interesting to watch her as she takes this next step in her life
She’s definitely made a difference at Silverdale and no doubt will make a difference at Kentucky as well

SILVERDALE -- Public transportation around Central Kitsap
was officially overhauled Monday with the opening of a new Silverdale Transit Center to act as the community's hub
Kitsap Transit unveiled its new facility at Ridgetop and Highway 303's exit on Monday
with a lineup of speakers that included Kitsap Transit Executive Director John Clauson
Bremerton Mayor Greg Wheeler and Kitsap County Commissioner Katie Walters
The structure is along Ridgetop Boulevard across from the St
and features a new bus access ramp onto Highway 303 southbound straight from the facility's stalls
The new Silverdale Transit Center has a canopy to shelter riders from the rain
bike lanes and storage and a bus driver comfort station
The project also includes a signaled intersection and crosswalk
“improves reliability and accessibility for transit riders and enhances access and mobility within the regional growth center by connecting people to opportunities,” according to Kitsap Transit
Clauson was particularly excited that the center will also include in-ground charging for Kitsap Transit's growing battery-electric zero-emission bus fleet and offer direct access to the hospital
"This new transit hub is a filling an essential need," Wheeler said ahead of the ribbon cutting
"In addition to supporting a multi-city network
this Silverdale Transit Center will also serve the local area as it continues to grow and add new housing
economic development and new opportunities."
The previous transit center, located in front of the Trails at Silverdale, was built as a temporary facility in 2001 after 25 years at the Kitsap Mall, reported Kitsap Transit on the project website
The agency said the old transfer station did not meet the needs of its riders and posed potential safety risks for pedestrians accessing nearby housing and services
and Kitsap Transit relied on the previous Silverdale Transit Center “way longer than we hoped for,” Clauson said in an interview
The $25 million project has been in the works for over a decade
like the on-ramp from the highway complicated the project
said Kitsap Transit spokesman Sanjay Bhatt
Kitsap Transit has reworked its fixed bus routes to accommodate the new transit center
A new route will serve The Trails using different stops, the Kitsap Transit reported on its summer services changes website
Two new local Silverdale routes and one new route between Silverdale and Poulsbo have been created
hours and frequency are increased for some routes
others are redrawn to serve the new transit center
Routes 265 and 266 will operate extended hours every half-hour
Routes 235 and 237 have been removed and will instead be serviced by routes 223 and 301
The new Silverdale Transit Center will be accessible from routes 212
the old Silverdale Transit Center will permanently close and the new center will begin operation
Significant damage to a retaining wall under construction along Newberry Hill Road will keep the street closed until November 3
the county announced in a statement Wednesday
Crews will need to excavate beneath the wall
Wait times for needed materials are also adding to the delay

For much of Friday night's girls' DII-A East Region District 2 title game
it looked like Silverdale could potentially challenge rival Notre Dame for the championship despite having lost to them twice this season
Notre Dame took home the first place finish
ahead by 2 points at the end of the first quarter and only down three points at the half
but some key misses by Silverdale gave the Lady Irish the opportunity they needed to show they deserved the title of district champions
Three of the Fighting Irish scored at least ten points in the game
compared to only two high scorers from the Lady Seahawks' Kinsley Owen
the Silverdale sophomore who often racks up at least twenty points in a game
showed some visible frustration when some of her shots didn’t hit
but she was still the high scorer for the night at 15 points
and she took home the title of regular season MVP
The surprise of the night was the Silverdale’s Sloane Colter
an eighth grader who successfully landed four baskets from beyond the arc
Notre Dame head coach Jason Hill reflected
“I think they stuck together because we built the lead a couple of times…and we lost it
and I think that goes with our season because we’ve had a lot of adversity
we’ve not shot well but we know that we’ve got a deep team…I think they rallied around each other
try and build the lead back up and hang on at the end because we knew Silverdale was coming.”
Silverdale head coach Victor Underwood said
“We gave a few offensive rebounds in the second half and they were able to convert on that- that hurt us
And we just didn’t finish around the basket the way we needed to to win tonight
I think we shot about 28% from the floor tonight- not great.” He was optimistic about his team’s future despite the loss
We’ve gotten better and better throughout the year
we took a step backwards in some ways tonight
We just have to learn from it and bounce back.”
Notre Dame senior Maliyah Maples was enthusiastic about the reasons for their win
You think about scouting us- I just think it’s a nightmare for other teams
and we really play hard for each other and we play hard for our coaches
This team is very special and we know that
We know how unique of a team this is and I think we play like it when it matters
we’re gonna fight for each other every time.”
Maples said that the win means “everything” to her team
I don’t get another do over at any of this
I wanted to make sure I didn’t have any regrets
So winning this is just another step to having no regrets
and a team that I’m going to do it all for- I’m gonna lay it all out there for them every time.”
Coach Hill also talked about the “next girl up” mentality of his team
saying “We’re extremely happy…Long hard road this year
started back in the summer- these girls had a goal to get back in here and win the championship
We fell short last year and now onto the next mission- we’re trying to get to the state tournament- so we’ve got a big game coming up this week
We’ll try and accomplish that goal as well
I think that these girls are dedicated to the game
You can tell on the court that they love playing together
They love each other off the court as well
I think it goes to show when they’re playing that we’re unselfish… next girl up mentality
COLLEGEDALE 16: The girls consolation game was not as close
with the Lady Bucs easily overtaking Collegedale 58 to 16 to claim the district's number three seed heading into the region tournament
3-point goals: Silverdale 5 (Sloane Colter 4
