Some inmates were injured in an outbreak of fights at Sioux Falls' historic prison over the weekend South Dakota Department of Corrections spokesperson Michael Winder told the Argus Leader in an email that a "couple fights" took place in the housing units of the South Dakota State Penitentiary's eastern halls Winder said "correctional staff responded exceptionally and professionally" to the fights and were able to stop the incident "within minutes." "There were non-life threatening injuries to the offenders," Winder said though he did not state how many inmates were involved or how the fights originated It is also unknown if the fights grew to include other areas of the 144-year-old prison The Argus Leader has asked Winder clarification and the east hall of the SDSP will remain on lockdown as that process is completed," Winder stated criticized the department in the wake of the fights Dixon told the Argus Leader she had planned to celebrate Lint's 34th birthday during a scheduled visitation the day the fights broke out Dixon said she believes a lack of positive programming or classes at the Sioux Falls prison played a part in the fights "But the only thing I can give to my kid for his birthday is money on his books or a hug I couldn't give him a hug yesterday for his birthday because of this bulls---." Three of the girls on the Chargers 4x400 team, Vyn, Pettengill, and Maddox, were also on the 4x800 team that won first place and set a new meet record on Friday. Maddox said she enjoyed teaming up with the girls on the 4x400 team because it doesn’t happen too often they’re in different areas during practice but to get to be a part of the same team and work toward the same goal was something she enjoyed but they know their training has set them up for long She also credited the Sioux Falls Christian coaching staff with prioritizing taking care of their bodies and camaraderie over results and breaking records Sioux Falls Christian boys track senior shot putter Paul Hoekman and junior teammate Marcus Furth spent all year practicing their throwing together Furth's dad built a wooden ring that they used to prepare for indoor nationals in March They used the wooden ring throughout the indoor season to hone their form and do their best at nationals but it helped us so much to get ready and do our best,” Hoekman said In addition to the indoor practice the throwing duo got where they threw throughout the winter cold Hoekman said he started throwing in eighth grade and immediately fell in love with it Sioux Falls Christian throwing coach Brett Keepers said everyone on the track and field team knew Hoekman would be special “He's so passionate about it,” Keepers said and everybody knew that someday Paul was going to break all of the SFC records The duo of Furth and Hoekman both finished in the top three in shot put at the Howard Wood Dakota Relays on May 2 with Furth finishing third and Hoekman taking home the first-place medal with a 64-07.25 throw Hoekman finished second a year ago and entered the meet set on a first-place finish “I knew I would have to come here and let it eat The North Dakota State commit recently threw a 66’5” in the Pierre Legion Meet and has become one of the top throwers in the country He’s also ranked second in the state in the discus Even with the first-place medal around Hoekman’s neck Keepers said the senior is likely a little disappointed with his final mark today The Chargers' throwing coach said Hoekman was aiming for a new personal record but came up a bit short of that “He just always wants to do better … Paul wants to set records and Paul wants to be the best in South Dakota.” Keepers said he frequently has to get Hoekman to taper his determination a bit to get him to relax and realize this is all a part of a longer process He said Hoekman may even go back out and throw some more or lift weights later before the discus throw on May 3 “There's little things that he can (tone down) it's even showing him film while he's throwing,” Keepers said because there's always areas that you can improve on And he wants to just break it down to the littlest thing Hoekman’s next goal will be to reach the 70-foot mark Hoekman will compete in the discus throw at the Howard Wood Dakota Relays on May 3 at 1 p.m The Sioux Falls Christian 4x800m girls team made history finishing the race in 9:10.26 to demolish the previous meet record by 10 seconds The team that broke the record on May 2 was comprised of Anna Vyn The Chargers have won the 4x800 at the Howard Wood Dakota Relays in four consecutive years including when they set the previous record in 2023 so being able to start the weekend off with achieving it is really exciting,” Maddox “It gives us a great start to the weekend.” The Sioux Falls Christian team said it believes it has been able to dominate the event over the past four years because of their depth and how they push each other to improve throughout the year Sioux Falls Christian topped a talented crop of competitors including some top teams from neighboring states Vyn hasn’t been a part of the 4x800 team all year but with multiple records within the team’s grasp she was inserted and made an immediate impact opening with a strong couple of laps to set the pace this is a gift and pressure is a privilege,” Vyn said first grade and second grade students in all 24 elementary schools in the Sioux Falls School District will soon benefit from a new literacy and science initiative in partnership with the Sioux Falls Zoo & Aquarium The initiative started when Promising Futures Fund founder Steve Hildebrand approached the district and zoo over a year ago to find ways to make the field trips it funds for 14 schools with high poverty rates more impactful education and conservation director at the zoo elementary curriculum coordinator at the district came up with lesson plans to connect literacy and science standards to the field trips students take to the Butterfly House & Aquarium in the fall McDaniel said the curriculum will bring real world learning experiences to students and said the district is grateful for the partnership Spencer said she’s excited to continue developing the curriculum year after year “High-quality literature was selected to support young readers in pre-and-post lessons to focus on letter and sound recognition and create writings to explain their experiences,” the district stated in a release “Research shows when students connect reading with experiences learning comes to life and transfers to higher academic achievement.” The Promising Futures Fund received a $50,000 grant from the Mary Chilton Chapter DAR Foundation for the project Michelle McElroy with the DAR chapter said it’s part of the nonprofit’s goal to make Sioux Falls a happier and better place More: Sioux Falls zoo, aquarium merger, revitalization plan exceeds initial fundraising goal PFF will be the largest funder of the new initiative Both the zoo and aquarium are providing discounted entry fees and covering the costs of ZooMobile visits to the schools Hildebrand said the new curriculum will be a great opportunity for students to read and write about animals that they’ll be close to at the aquarium He said students will get a book for each of those visits The new literacy initiative was piloted in kindergarten classrooms at Garfield Elementary School throughout this school year and the kindergarten curriculum will be used across the district starting this fall Garfield also will pilot a first grade curriculum this fall before it’s used across the district the following year then will pilot second grade curriculum in the 2026-2027 school year before every elementary school uses it the following school year a nice reminder to ask for help if you need it or try something new if you want to feel better But mental health care does not posit a single fix Maybe antidepressants or counseling doesn’t work for everyone So we rush to blindly sift through an overwhelming list of possible “cures” in the isolation that is stress Two anesthesiologists in Sioux Falls want to break that cycle with ketamine therapy “To struggle is part of the human condition,” says Andy Mortenson costly and potentially tragic it can be when people can’t find a solution There is a need in this community and across the country for an alternative Why open a ketamine therapy clinic?Mortenson and his co-founder, Travis Behrens, opened PAX Institute late last year after simply having lunch together and easily recognizing how much more their backgrounds in anesthesiology could help their community ketamine has been an FDA-approved medication for general anesthesia but Behrens and Mortenson point to literature and research that defends ketamine infusions as a safe evidence-based treatment in long-term mental health care According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) has been diagnosed with depression “at some point in their lives,” and depression is currently the leading cause of disability in ages 15 to 44 But Behrens adds that ketamine has been the No 1 medication studied in depression over the past 50 years and that “ketamine IV therapy is over 70% efficacious compared to 40% of your ‘gold standard’ (traditional antidepressant medications).” “There is an unmet need for mental health patients who are not being effectively treated by traditional modalities,” Behrens said “We know we are going to help a lot of people and that will continue to drive our commitment to a safe and high-quality delivery of therapy.” But the odds are against ketamine therapy clinics like PAX Mortenson acknowledges the reputation that recreational use of ketamine has given an otherwise highly researched If you've never heard of ketamine before now you've likely seen reports of Tesla head Elon Musk using it on his own to treat depression or actor Matthew Perry suffering a fatal overdose in 2023 “We’re still awaiting a more open dialogue on how effective it is when administered in an evidence-based practice by trained professionals,” Behrens says ketamine use as a form of therapy is still novel It was just approved in 2019 as a prescription version safely used under the supervision of a certified clinic like PAX for treatment-resistant depression (TRD) Unlike an antidepressant drug that increases serotonin in the brain Mortenson says ketamine can help a patient unlearn unhealthy thought patterns or become more receptive to other forms of therapy — or even just positive life experiences “It’s kind of like a primer for a new outlook or a new perspective on things,” Mortenson says “It helps people recognize their default mode then get out of that cycle and view their life differently than they have before.” Mortenson says it can act like a “mood booster” almost immediately While some medications might take over a month to realize its effects ketamine infusion therapy can alleviate symptoms of depression or anxiety within days or even hours helping to quickly rebuild the brain’s weakened neuropathways “People generally leave feeling pretty good,” says Behrens who with Mortenson administers ketamine infusion therapy or prescription nasal spray Spravato at PAX But ketamine works best while paired with guided therapy sessions so Mortenson and Behrens have partnered with psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner Kaitlyn Walker and clinical pharmacist Molly Mortenson to round out the PAX team “We are all well-positioned to create a framework of collaboration that provides science-backed treatment in a safe way that respects (ketamine) because it definitely deserves our respect and care,” says Molly Mortenson who is the director of pharmacotherapy at PAX and grew up with parents running an independent pharmacy in small-town South Dakota “We are a whole team working together with the same goal to really benefit the patient,” she said More: Fundraiser supports mental healthcare in Sioux Falls. Andy Mortenson says over 90% of mental health care in South Dakota is treated by a primary care physician But he is hopeful a “cultural shift in awareness” will help them establish further partnerships across sectors “People are open to alternatives,” Behrens said this is just a tool in the bag of all other providers who have been trying to treat depression or anxiety.” Andy and Molly Mortenson are married with five kids at home Andy Mortenson and Behrens are also still practicing anesthesiology outside of their new business “We have a dedicated building here,” Mortenson says “We are proud of our pedigree and know we are delivering ketamine in absolutely the safest way Want to learn more about options for mental health care support “Spoil Mom on Mother’s Day,” it’s filling up The lease proceeds were used to fund the state’s K-12 schools, and the $8 million went into the trust fund into which those lease payments had flowed. The site was a “gift from God,” Republican Gov. Larry Rhoden would later say. But its selection sparked fierce opposition, political activism and a lawsuit from neighbors. It also contributed to the Rhoden administration’s failure to push the $825 million project across the finish line during the 2025 legislative session. In March, the state sent out another request for information, this time as part of an effort to “reset” discussions on a correctional facility to replace the state penitentiary. In less than a month, more than a dozen options emerged. One of them, the former Citibank campus in northern Sioux Falls, was apparently available as an option back in 2023. A rendering of a possible prison site setup on the campus of the former Citibank headquarters in Sioux Falls. (Courtesy of NAI Commercial Real Estate)Citibank had built a new headquarters on the south end of Sioux Falls in 2019. A representative for the company selling the land said they didn’t submit it as a possible prison site in 2023, but said the state didn’t reach out during the “outreach” phase of its site search. “I don’t know what happened the first time around,” said Troy Fawcett of NAI Sioux Falls Commercial Real Estate. Rhoden’s office wouldn’t comment on whether the former Citibank campus just north of the state penitentiary was under consideration in 2023, but spokeswoman Josie Harms did note its size in a statement to South Dakota Searchlight. In the first request for information, the state sought at least 100-200 acres of land or more for a 1,500 bed facility, based on a consultant’s report. “The Project Prison Reset task force isn’t looking back — we’re moving forward,” Harms wrote to Searchlight. “With that said, the Citibank building is only 70 acres.” Ryan Brunner, a policy adviser for Rhoden, presented the new options to members of Project Prison Reset during the group’s second meeting on Tuesday in Springfield. He told Searchlight after the meeting that several options may not have been for sale in 2023, and that the market in Sioux Falls has changed. “We’ll have to do some analysis on these sites to see if they’re a fit or not,” Brunner said The parameters for a potential site are less restrictive this time around The governor’s work group is exploring all options multiple facilities and locations outside the Sioux Falls area There’s a preference for sites within 20 miles of Sioux Falls in the newer request for information That easing of requirements made it possible for the state to field offers from Big Stone City Big Stone has an empty cheese plant on more than 100 acres Aberdeen has two options on two ends of the Hub City It does offer some enticements the others do not, though. It has buildings that could be refurbished, rather than built from the ground up. It’s connected to water and sewer, and is less than a mile from the current penitentiary campus. The minimum and maximum security units on the current penitentiary grounds will remain, regardless of the future of the 1881 main penitentiary. Ryan Brunner, a policy adviser for Rhoden, presented the new options to members of Project Prison Reset during the group’s second meeting on Tuesday in Springfield. He told Searchlight after the meeting that several options may not have been for sale in 2023, and that the market in Sioux Falls has changed. “We’ll have to do some analysis on these sites to see if they’re a fit or not,” Brunner said. The parameters for a potential site are less restrictive this time around. The governor’s work group is exploring all options, including smaller facilities, multiple facilities and locations outside the Sioux Falls area. There’s a preference for sites within 20 miles of Sioux Falls in the newer request for information, but that’s not a requirement. That easing of requirements made it possible for the state to field offers from Big Stone City, Aberdeen, Huron and Mitchell. Big Stone has an empty cheese plant on more than 100 acres. Huron has 100 acres in an industrial park. Mitchell has more than that, on land south of town near its landfill. Aberdeen has two options on two ends of the Hub City. The newer parameters also put the Citibank site, with its 70 acres, in the running. That offer is the spendiest option by asking price, at $33.8 million, and the one with the smallest footprint. Sen. Chris Karr, R-Sioux Falls, told South Dakota Searchlight that the work group’s Springfield trip, with its tour of the medium-security Mike Durfee State Prison and rundowns of the multiple vocational programs offered there to more than 1,000 inmates, was illuminating. It solidified his skepticism on the need for 100 acres or more. The Mike Dufee campus, formerly a university, is smaller than 70 acres. The penitentiary in Sioux Falls is overcrowded by medium security inmates, Karr noted, not maximum security ones. The 1,500-bed proposal and its 100-plus acres were designed around maximum security housing units. “I’m not convinced we need 100 acres,” Karr said. “I don’t think anybody is at this point.” Karr’s not fully sold on any of the new proposals – there isn’t space at any of them for the ideal security perimeter, for example – but said the idea that Citibank is “almost turn-key” is appealing. Karr said the state should have worked harder to find sites back in 2023, instead of requesting information and waiting for offers. The work of site selection may have been more fruitful if it had included the kind of public forums now taking place with Project Prison Reset, he said. “This is getting vetted and discussed the way it should have been the first time around,” he said. Other options include multiple undeveloped properties with 100 acres or more in the Sioux Falls area, most presented for sale on a per-acre basis. There’s land at the intersection of interstates 29 and 90, a plot near Amazon’s Sioux Falls distribution center, and another near the Department of Correction’s West Farm site, home to a facility for juveniles in state custody. The Sioux Metro Growth Alliance has offered land near Worthing as another Lincoln County option, and the city of Canton pointed to tracts of land west of town. Lt. Gov. Tony Venhuizen leads the Project Prison Reset work group. During the initial site discussions in 2023, he was still a Republican state representative for District 13 in Sioux Falls. He’s pleased to have so many offers, noting that the publicity surrounding the work group may have drawn more attention. Even so, he said, “we need to be realistic” about how the potential sales might go over with neighbors. The site obtained in 2023, he said, is still an option. “I don’t find it particularly surprising that we have owners of land in some of these communities who are willing to offer it,” Venhuizen said. Rhoden has SFBs . God could give a rat’s ass about SD prisons ( or Trump supporters ). Build somewhere in eastern SD where the city will not surround it in 10 years . The labor argument is non sense . Many SD communities would look forward to a stable labor force . Prisons are a stable labor force and a growing . ReplyShareTopLatestDiscussionsNo posts When the South Dakota Department of Corrections announced the site where it hoped to build a 1,500-bed men’s prison in 2023, it told the public it was the only usable site available. The state had sent a request for information months earlier, hoping someone would offer up land for the project. No one who was willing to sell had exactly what the state was after, Corrections Secretary Kellie Wasko said. This week, department spokesman Michael Winder again wrote that “no formal submissions” met the criteria for the prison. So the department transferred $8 million to the state Office of School and Public Lands, laying claim to 320 acres of farmland a few miles south of Harrisburg that had been leased to farmers for years. The lease proceeds were used to fund the state’s K-12 schools, and the $8 million went into the trust fund into which those lease payments had flowed. “We’ll have to do some analysis on these sites to see if they’re a fit or not,” Brunner said. filled to the brim Saturday afternoon at Bowden Field where the Augustana softball team was seeking another Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference tournament title in front of its home crowd Vikings right fielder Andrea Cain did what she always does gathering with her fellow teammates in the outfield to do their handshake their eyes were fixed on the 215 fans in attendance “I think all three of us kind of took in the moment to just look around and look at the fans,” Cain said especially just being on your home field and getting to see all the support from the fans.” Top-seeded Augustana sent seven runs across home plate in the bottom of the first inning before Cain sent a two-run homer over the fence in the fourth and Vikings cruised to a 12-1 victory in five innings over No 3 seed Winona State to capture their fifth NSIC tournament title in program history it’s the second straight NSIC tourney crown and the third in the last four years the Vikings extend their winning streak to 21 games “Another conference title is honestly a standard for us,” Cain said “We pride ourselves on playing for the brotherhood — the people that came before us the people that are here right now and the people that come after us in this program — and I think it’s something that we pride ourselves on going and doing It was yet another stellar performance in the circle by AU hurler Grace Glanzer who improved her record to 24-6 on the season She finished with six strikeouts and one walk the Vikings combined for 10 hits in the game Ashton Dorman had a pair of base hits and drove in two runs and Desi Cuevas went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI Stella Harber and Liz Dierks each chipped in a base hit and a pair of RBIs “We knew coming into this tournament that we were regionally ranked so we could come out and play free,” Glanzer said “That energy shows up in all different ways and it’s just developing into bigger things That’s really hard to take that momentum away during a game when things like that happen.” After retiring WSU (42-14) in order in the top of the first plating two runs to get the scoring started Ella Cooper followed with an RBI single before Harber’s base knock through the middle sent two more across the plate Dierks drove in another run on an infield single Cuevas then notched an RBI when she hit into a fielder’s choice “We made really good adjustments to their pitching and they had two really different types of pitchers,” Augustana coach Gretta Melsted said and she held us a couple weeks ago when she was here so for us to make that adjustment was fantastic And then to also turn around and go to a kid that throws more up and more curveballs “I give our kids a lot of credit for being able to make those adjustments quickly because that’s the hard part.” An RBI single by Jaden Johnson pulled the Warriors within 7-1 in the top of the second but they were unable to manufacture any more runs for the remainder of the game Lexi Lander extended the Vikings’ lead to 8-1 on a two-out RBI single up the middle before AU was able to tack on four more in the fourth Norah Christiansen got the rally started for the Vikings in their final inning at the plate driving in a run on an RBI single down the left-field line After Dierks notched her second RBI of the day when she reached on a fielder’s choice Cain capped off the scoring with a two-run blast over the fence in left field HAVE YOURSELF A WEEKEND, ANDREA CAIN pic.twitter.com/uT2VKEN6pY the Vikings’ celebration had officially begun “We walked into that game with a lot of energy “There were obviously some pre-game nerves “I think once that first run crossed the plate so we just kept the pedal to the metal and passed the bat.” Jayda Berg was tagged with the loss for Winona State she walked one hitter and allowed eight runs — six earned — on five hits Izzy Howe pitched 3 1/3 innings for the Warriors yielding four earned runs on five hits with three strikeouts the Vikings are a safe bet to host the NCAA Central Region tournament next week at Bowden Field The full tournament field will be revealed at 9 a.m During their three-day run in the NSIC tournament the Vikings allowed just five runs on 11 hits “I think that’s just a testament to our pitchers and our defense,” Cain said I think that just lets us walk with confidence knowing that it’s going to be hard for teams to score on us I made a semi-impromptu weekend trip to Sioux Falls and came across a massive stainless-steel sculpture spanning the length of a football field the sculpture is considered a signature art piece for the city but I would argue that its relevance extends beyond city limits To anybody simply passing through Sioux Falls’ downtown they might just pass it off as a frivolous structure that looks cool But the idea behind its construction and a 15-foot gap at its center is what makes it even cooler Eighty-five feet above the Big Sioux River the gap represents “the leap of faith dreamers take to see their dreams come true.” I began applying such an idea to my own life experiences I’ve been thinking critically about the moments where I’ve taken such leaps as well as situations where I couldn’t muster up any courage to jump We’re presented with such decisions every day — whether it’s taking up a job offer moving to a different city or planning a vacation — and the idea of leaps of faith can be applied to each situation My path was well laid out after high school My leaps of faith included attending college in the first place — a dream I long had — as well as the choice to switch majors in my freshman year and become a double-major in my junior year My job search presented another leap of faith as I mainly perused positions in Fargo Bemidji was not at the top of my list when seeking work I returned to Bemidji as a full-time employee in 2021 after spending four years here as a college student Though I didn’t expect to return to the area post-graduation I had a conversation with someone regarding future plans and where we would want to live after Bemidji This person told me — something along the lines — that it was obvious I’d live in Bemidji the rest of my life Though I hadn’t initially dreamed of staying in Bemidji after college the process has a way of leading you where you need to go and transforming your dreams in ways you hadn’t considered earlier dreams can still be intact and linger one must learn to be content where they're at and make the best of their current situation move to a bigger city or immigrate to Canada I’ve learned that a leap of faith can be the decision to have faith in the process And I learned that thanks to a hunk of metal in Sioux Falls Here are results from local athletes in Friday's events at the Howard Wood Dakota
