and a shiny pendant may seem like unremarkable objects
each is a treasured talisman marking a cherished moment
Close to three dozen people delighted in the tales of those and other trinkets during the second-ever “Adult Show and Tell” storytelling event Thursday at the Sleepy Hollow Writers Center
The brainchild of former Writers Center managing director Krista Madsen
the event brought close to three dozen spectators to the Center’s Sleepy Hollow train station headquarters to reprise last year’s Halloween season Show and Tell debut
“I wanted to bring back the notion of kids in kindergarten sharing objects and stories in a casual setting,” says Madsen
While the first gathering was plagued by holiday-related gridlock
last week’s session was comfortable and unhurried
as 11 presenters filled their allotted five minutes with humor and pathos
For self-described “practical pack rat” Josh Lewis of Sleepy Hollow
and a glow in the dark “live human pong game” took center stage
Lewis enlisted neighbors Nathan Scherich and Dave Arons to help demonstrate his live action recreation of the original 1972 pong video game
He also modeled the hat that transformed him into a nerdy “Soupy Falupavich” alter ego conjured up during his high school forays into comedy
Lewis now leads the Sleepy Hollow Arts Collective
“I kept the hat handy because you never know when you may need to be Soupy again,” says Lewis
Sleepy Hollow’s Anne White showed off a coffee mug featuring Vincent Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” painting
“The mug holds so much more than coffee,” says White
“It’s filled to the brim with precious memories of my father.”
UK-born Geoffrey Baker was an aspiring American citizen when Pearl Harbor convinced him to join the fight for freedom
he enlisted in the Canadian Air Force and flew combat missions that frequently took him away from White and her sister
He reassured the girls by taking them into the night to see that the North Star
one of the points of lights in the Van Gogh masterpiece
He hung a print of the painting above their beds to reassure them
When White found the same Van Gogh painting on a mug
she vowed to us it daily to honor her father
warm and loving man who lived each day to the fullest,” says White
Jennifer Convissor of Sleepy Hollow explained how a cherished pendant keeps the memory of her grandfather close to her heart
Sydney Lederman trained as a wartime ship welder before his metal-working skill earned him lifetime employment for New York City jeweler Harry Winston
he fashioned a gold pendant for his wife depicting their beloved pup Heinzie
“The charm is inscribed on the back and represents the love they had for each other and for their dog,” says Convissor
Ossining’s Meaddows Ryan clutched two yellow Pokémon dolls that represent the fun
and loving link she forged with her late partner
After reconnecting with a boy she’d met in school decades earlier
the couple was inseparable until his passing in 2024
“We brought out the goofball in each other,” she recalls
Croton on Hudson resident Vivienne Courtney’s treasure was a mid-century French ‘Blondette doll,’ that introduced girls to the “womanly arts.” Featured speaker Jim Logan showed off an antique chocolate mold from the historic Lofts Candy company
who ran Lofts during its 1920s tenure as the world’s leading candy maker
Underhill is interred at the Sleepy Hollow cemetery
where Logan is the director and resident historian
Thursday’s Show and Tell lived up to Madsen’s original goal; to forge a sense of community during an uncertain time
“I think people are really longing for connection and storytelling
especially when a lot of us feel powerless,” says Madsen
“Maybe leaning into creativity is one way to help bring us together.”
The next Adult Show and Tell is scheduled for October 16 at 7:00 p.m.–also in the Writers Center
and website in this browser for the next time I comment

We’ve all heard of the “hear me out” trend
nudge about some ostensibly objectionable fictional character you otherwise find kind of sexy
Picture “hear me out” cakes topped with printouts of Shrek or Sully from Monsters Inc
Horror fans are especially prone to those secret desires largely because our genre is awash in monsters
Don’t tell me you’ve never thought of what you might do if Tyler Mane’s Michael Myers came after you
MOMA tendencies clash with my inner Scottish moor sensibilities
I had a deep hyperfixation with bog mummies
while I may not embody gothic traits in my day-to-day life
and few brood quite as well as the Headless Horseman
Clad in all black with clanky riding boots and a sensational cape
he’s just the kind of guy where I’d stop for a double-take
Wonder if that horse is the only thing he’s capable of riding
And if the current zeitgeist has told me anything
The Headless Horseman was a sadistic Hessian (German soldier) during the American Revolutionary War
but there’s an undeniable swagger to the way Ray Park portrays the headless brute
No, but seriously, that head does a lot. This is the thrust (pun intended) of my argument, but please, hear me out. In Burton’s Sleepy Hollow
the Headless Horseman is controlled by a living person
The person who exhumes his skull thus yields control of the Horseman
instructing the deceased rider to do their bidding
hear me out—I’m not sure I’d send him on some kind of rural New York
seeking revenge for some pretty egregious past wrongs (can’t really blame her)
pledges her soul to Satan to raise the Horseman from the dead to reclaim what she feels was stolen for her
And guess who is willing to go along with it
It helps that most of his victims are pretty rotten men
and while I can’t exactly forgive targeting Christina Ricci
I can simultaneously accept it wasn’t entirely his fault
but don’t tell me there’s not something there
With a consenting Horseman and the capacity to call on his aid whenever you needed it… is there a windmill burning nearby or is it just hot in here
Monster attraction could be a piece unto itself
it is largely motivated by the allure of power and taboo
coupled with the fantasy of overcoming fear and components of the self otherwise deemed socially unacceptable
and expression are motivated more by dominant cultural touchstones than any innate moral core
while you might shudder at the thought of being attracted to a headless Hessian
is the fictional embodiment of masculinity without the actuality of the Headless Horseman being
The patriarchal underucrrents are stripped away
headless behemoth whose bidding is mine to command—a monster whose sole allegiance is strictly to me
even if I’d never likely want that in any more literal sense
when Walken’s Horseman bloodily kisses Lady Van Tassel before dragging her into the depths of Hell
what with my optical illusions and those chalk incantations under the bed
just the aesthetics of the Horseman himself are incredible
Four-time Oscar winner Colleen Atwood was responsible for the costuming
and the Horseman here looks better than ever before
Just a headless cutie looking to reclaim his head

Sleepy Hollow Sports Park's new all-season tubing hill is expected to return this spring after a bumpy start that closed it shortly after its grand opening last year
Polk County Conservation officials got to work on its revitalization
The result? The largest all-weather tubing hill in the world
according to Polk County Conservation Director Rich Leopold
But the highly anticipated hill ran into some snags less than a month after its debut Memorial Day weekend in 2024
conservation community outreach coordinator
Why did the tubing hill close last year?Conservation staff closed the hill on June 22 for repairs after running into technical issues with the conveyor lift
which brings people and their tubes to the top of the hill
the team also found that some seams on the belt were coming loose
meant to recycle and pump water onto the synthetic ski hill to give it a slippery surface
Contractors will work in the coming weeks to seal the pond with bentonite
5 for weekend skiing and snowboarding until the season ended
Leopold estimates the department has spent around $3 million on the park renovations
Conversation also is asking for an internal $800,000 loan from Polk County to cover operating losses for its hill
The park would repay the enterprise loan once it becomes financially solvent
More: What to know about Polk County's proposed $365 million budget, including a levy decrease
Leopold says a lot of the park's "bumps in the road" were anticipated
the revenues have been increasing each year
Once the new lodge and snow operations are running
gross revenue should be around $3 million per year
Leopold says he is excited for the park's future
especially filling a recreation gap on the city's east side
shining gem right in their backyard," he said
"So I think the demographic projections we have on usership is going to be fantastic."
Conservation officials are targeting April 18 as the opening weekend for skiing and snowboarding
the hill would be open to skiers and snowboarders exclusively on Fridays through Sundays
Kick-off weekend for tubing is anticipated on May 24
While a majority of the activities will be for tubing after Memorial Day weekend
Lown said it will have some designated times for skiers and snowboarders
In the meantime, conservation officials have a lineup of family programs set for Spring Break
The existing tubing slope was resurfaced with Snowflex
a synthetic turf that feels like a squishy
It has about 650 spigots that shoot water onto the mat
which is purified and recycled from a park pond filled with water pumped in from Fourmile Creek
Riders can get up to speeds of 30 mph on the hill
A conveyor belt gets users up the hill and staff at the top assist people into tubes
There's a "de-escalation area" at the bottom of the hill to slow people down
Conservation officials also added new lighting and a sound system
Will the Snowflex hill actually run all year?Officials eventually plan to keep the hill open for most of the year
It will not be open for the winter season until conservation officials can purchase a new snow-making system to replace its current aging system
the turf's water misting system will allow people to tube
The water misting system has to be turned off during the cold winter months to keep freezing pipes from bursting
and park employees will push snow over the top of the turf with the help of a snow-making system to give users an authentic experience
county officials say the Snowflex will allow skiing
snowboarding and tubing for about 10 months out of the year
The off-seasons will allow park employees to prepare the turf for summer and winter use
More: Sleepy Hollow park will be home to what could be the largest year-round tubing hill in the US
That includes two-hour access to the Snowflex hill with a lift pass plus a helmet rental
People also can purchase a season pass for $200
Snowboarders and skiers must bring their own gear with metal edges
Conservation officials will launch a $10 million fundraising campaign — which Leopold anticipates will largely draw private funding — to pay for a new lodge
Officials are looking to secure another $3 million for infrastructure through local governments

estled in the picturesque village of Sleepy Hollow
legend and a bit of the supernatural intertwine: Sleepy Hollow Cemetery
is not just a resting place but also a destination steeped in lore
thanks in part to Washington Irving’s famously terrifying tale
“The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” Leading this historic site with a blend of reverence and practicality is cemetery president Philip Zegarelli ’70
The cemetery is especially bustling during the Halloween season
when visitors flock there to get a hit of the haunting atmosphere
the Headless Horseman rises from the Old Dutch Burying Ground
which connects to the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery and has gravestones dating to the 1600s
Irving himself is interred in the cemetery
but Zegarelli notes that it’s not been an entirely restful place for the author: “That’s actually not his original tombstone
It’s his third — because he was so popular
people chiseled away his tombstone for souvenirs.”
Zegarelli in fact hails from Sleepy Hollow; growing up
he spent his summers swimming in the Pocantico River
which gracefully bisects the cemetery’s grounds
it’s a vocation of sorts,” Zegarelli says of his role
“I feel like I’m returning something to the village
“but the cemetery was always a part of me because we lived on the other side of the river
and a lot of my friends and their families are buried there.”
Zegarelli never imagined he would someday be responsible for its residents’ forever home
“People thought of Antarctica as just a light bulb on a globe.”
His four years of service there were transformative
He supported the National Science Foundation’s research efforts and engaged with scientists
making frequent trips between New Zealand and the frozen continent
(Even now Zegarelli remains active in Antarctic affairs as director of the Old Antarctica Explorers Association
which advocates for the continent’s preservation as a natural and unclaimed sanctuary.)
Once Zegarelli returned to more temperate climes he pursued a career in banking
he served as mayor of Sleepy Hollow from 1979 to 1987
he became village manager of neighboring Briarcliff Manor and held the position until 2021
He had long been on the board of the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery when fellow board members approached him to consider the presidency
Zegarelli officially became president in March
and now faces the delicate task of managing a site that is both a historic landmark and a tourist attraction; the job requires a unique blend of sensitivity and savvy
knowledge and experience are perfect for running something like a cemetery,” he says
The cemetery operates as a 501(c)(3) corporation
which helps fund the necessary repairs and maintenance
“There’s a real story to tell here,” he says of the cemetery
It’s a place to spend some time just walking through unencumbered
The cemetery hosts many events for visitors
including nighttime tours illuminated by lanterns and candlelight
a murder-themed tour that details some of the shocking final tales of the cemetery’s residents and walks that take visitors to the graves of the famous
For all the ghostly fun that happens on Halloween
Zegarelli is clear that the cemetery is a year-round place of importance to the town and to him
“We have an obligation to the people who have chosen to be interred here
And this may sound a little hokey or a little spooky
but we have the responsibility for taking care of their bodily remains — whatever form they may be in — for eternity.”

ExpandA self-storage facilities similar to this one in McHenry was rejected by Sleepy Hollow officials over resident pushback
A Wauconda-based developer has pulled plans to build an eight-building storage unit facility in Sleepy Hollow following a no vote from the village’s planning and zoning commission.
Residents collected more than 400 signatures opposing the plan and attended a public hearing in recent days before the planning and zoning commission.
Opponents argued that the proposal by StoreMore 365 for a 4.5-acre site at the southeast corner of Route 72 and Tartans Glen Drive is not a good fit in a town where traditional storage sheds are not typically allowed. They also said the facility would be too close to neighboring homes.
“I think you guys can do better,” one resident said at the hearing.
Village trustees were expected to vote on the project on April 14, but StoreMore 365 pulled its application.
“I really have nothing to say on it,” Village President Stephan Pickett said Friday. “The application has been pulled, and we’re moving on.”
StoreMore 365 owner Tim James declined to comment other than to say he does not intend to present new plans for the property.
During the recent public hearing, James said developing a plan on the site was not easy. He noted he made some modifications to the plan following previous public comments.
“It’s been a challenge to make it profitable, to make it good access to the site for customers, and be considerate of the neighboring properties and to keep the character of Sleepy Hollow in mind,” James said. “ But this is what we’ve tried to do.”
An early proposal to build a self-storage facility with three buildings on the same property won village approval despite objections from residents. However, that developer backed out after a six-month extension from the village expired.
The most recent proposal faced strong opposition from residents who noted it had more buildings and came closer to neighboring homes than the original proposal.
“He went backwards on this,” Village Trustee Jenny McGuire said, noting the StoreMore 365 proposal featured eight buildings compared to the three proposed by the original developer.
McGuire, who has steadfastly opposed putting a self-storage facility on the property, said she would like to see a development, like retail, that helps the village’s revenues.

It's not every day your grocery experience includes marble bathrooms
a comfy room for nursing mothers and a large bar with a view of the Tappan Zee aka Gov
But that's just the tip of the iceberg for what DeCicco & Sons offers at its new bi-level Sleepy Hollow store located in the Edge-on-Hudson development
the sprawling 50,000 square-foot store — the largest in Westchester (only Brewster is bigger) and the second that's been built from the ground up (Somers was the first) — also features a state of the art enhanced deli section with a carving and smoked meats section
a wider inventory of prepared foods (think more Asian and Latin products)
There's almost no detail the owners behind the business — brothers John and Joe DeCicco Sr
including nods to Sleepy Hollow with a Headless Horseman artistic cutout suspended behind the beer taps and purse pegs under the bar in the shape of the Headless Horseman
Of course there are also rows and rows of grocery and pantry items
of the light-filled industrial space that has a cathedral feel thanks to its vaulted ceilings and numerous windows
Delicious news: Spring Hudson Valley Restaurant Week starts March 31. See what's new
fresh produce (both regular and organic) is a point of pride as is the store's wide range of Italian products
The DeCiccos recognized the burgeoning craft beer market in the Hudson Valley early on
with each location — this marks their 11th — carrying from 1,000 to 3,000 varieties
who runs the company's craft beer business
was made an honorary knight in 2017 by the Knighthood of the Brewers Mash Staff in Belgium for his “loyal services to the brewing profession.”)
The family-owned business also prides itself on its meat and seafood offerings as well as its customer service and catering services
As part of the company's motto to always be innovating
A new electronic pick up screen in the cold cuts area lets you know when your order is ready
Another highlight is the carving station — only the Sleepy Hollow store has this so far — where you can get pastrami
porchetta and turkey carved by hand and sliced to order for either by the pound or sandwich orders
This is the first DeCicco's where sandwiches are broken into their own section with new breads and sandwich varieties
This is also the only grocery store in the country that features
thanks to a collaboration with Boar's Head
the Cold Smoke Experience where shoppers can order sandwiches made with different styles of woodchips
Options include applewood and hickory with mesquite and olive woods part of the rotation down the road
The three sandwiches developed with Boar's Head so far include a Deluxe Roast Beef (with sopressata
Arugula and Roasted Peppers (with garlic aioli on Ciabatta bread)
artichoke hearts and arugula with pesto calabrese on focaccia) and Vegetarian (with grilled vegetables
the store is also featuring new entrees with Asian and Latin sections and items such as sesame chicken
tinkering and raising the bar in an effort to improve how they service shoppers
"We want to offer a better hybrid of what people want to eat to go as well as continue to offer the classic deli experience," he said
said they're constantly talking to vendors and travelling to other supermarkets across the country in an effort to see what's new and exchange ideas
"You always want to offer the best experience possible," said DeCicco Sr
It's the mantra of what the company was built on starting in 1973 when John and Joe Sr
Along with being the first grocery store in New York to put a bar in a grocery store (Brewster in 2010)
DeCicco & Sons was one of the first in the lower Hudson Valley to build their properties with green initiatives in mind
including solar panels generating 75% of a store's electricity during peak sunlight
and refrigeration using carbon dioxide to help reduce global warming
a sustainable concrete made from recycled glass
further underscoring the company's commitment to eco-friendly construction practices
state-of-the-art refrigeration system that integrates the hot water
heating and cooling system so they can work together for maximum efficiency
A strong dedication to customer service combined with industry leading innovations has always been the modus operandi of DeCicco's where it's not uncommon to see John DeCicco Sr
bagging groceries and chatting with customers
New to this store: a robot called Tally that checks inventory as a way to keep merchandise in stock and inform managers what they need to know
For the first time in a DeCicco & Sons store there are now QR codes along with prices listed on supermarket items which help Tally do its job
Harrison restaurant: Vesta Kitchen + Bar has drinks named for Roman gods, elevated comfort food
A glass elevator (or stairs) takes you to the second floor
which is almost cathedral-like in its vastness thanks to its industrial vibe
a mother's room for nursing moms and water fountains similar to what you'd find at an airport where you can refill your water bottle
It's also where you'll find a lounge area along with a glassed-in room that can be rented out for meetings
The room also features a full kitchen that DeCicco Sr
including a glassed-in area that DeCicco Sr
calls the "brains of the operation," where the machinery that makes the store run is housed
A similar glass room featuring beer barrels is on the other side
is the bar (with that Sleepy Hollow Horseman artsy cutout) and a vast windowed dining room with views of the bridge — think about 150 to sit either inside or on the sizeable outdoor terrace
featuring those aforementioned Sleepy Hollow purse pegs
thanks to a collaboration with master mixologist Julio Enriquez
Drinks will roll out a few weeks post opening
And since drinks go hand in hand with food
there's also a restaurant called The Hollows that plays into the industrial look with aluminum siding as well as painted words that call out the Eastern Aircraft Division
General Motors produced bombers for the Navy
(The Edge on Hudson is built where the GM plant had been.) Pizza
Further down from the restaurant is another event space
that can accommodate up to 150 cocktail style
Because the DeCicco family prides itself on their ties to the community — they do a lot of charity work and in particular donate to each local PTA — each store is designed to cater to their neighborhood
That means the Sleepy Hollow theme is big here with local artwork showcasing images of the village in the hallway
The family also adjusts each store's inventory to its specific demographics
they're working to cater to Sleepy Hollow's large Latino community as well as tenants in the luxury Edge on the Hudson complex
"We're still doing research and listening to the community and trying to bring in more Ecuadorean products," said DeCicco Sr
"This is really a grand experience," he added
"Full of new ideas and new concepts and the most amazing view
We hope and believe it will be a pleasant experience for your whole family to come enjoy."
Address: 1 Legend Dr., Sleepy Hollow, 914-357-4200, deciccoandsons.com
March 28; expect a robust demo schedule Friday to Sunday with samplings of store made items between 10 a.m
Good to know: This is DeCicco & Son's 11th store and its largest in Westchester County; other locations include Ardsley
Their first Connecticut store will open later this year at at 11 Glen Ridge Road in Greenwich; there are also plans to take over what had been DeCicco Family Markets (a different branch of the same family) in Scarsdale later this year
Fun fact: The two DeCicco brothers who founded the company — John Sr
— are married to two sisters (Marie and Diane)

Residents in Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown now have a second supermarket in the area to do their food shopping
a ribbon cutting ceremony was held for DeCicco & Sons in the Edge-on-Hudson complex in Sleepy Hollow
It is DeCicco & Sons’ 11th location and its largest facility in Westchester County at approximately 50,000 square feet
The first floor of the supermarket encompasses 30,000 square feet
while the second-floor features 7,000 square feet with a spacious bar and patio
along with 5,000 square feet that’s available for community events
There is also a 4,000-square-foot outdoor area
One of the standout features of the Sleepy Hollow store
which will provide several hundred new jobs
which is designed to bring greater speed and convenience to the already highly regarded deli department
Customers will also find DeCicco & Sons’ signature meat
Construction of the supermarket at 1 Legend Drive began in 2023
is planning two more locations in Scarsdale and Greenwich

government is turning inward and pulling funding for critical health care projects around the world
it is encouraging to learn that there are remarkable American physicians and administrators who are still trying to help
Andrew Grose is an orthopedic trauma surgeon at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in the local tri-state area who has been working for four years to address one of the most pressing
According to the Global Surgery Foundation
traumatic injuries cause more deaths and disabilities than HIV
the devastating reality is that 5 billion people worldwide lack access to well-trained surgeons and anesthesiologists
Grose’s efforts began four years ago when he joined the newly-formed Global Musculoskeletal Health Equity Division (GMHED) of HSS
he was asked to travel to Ghana to meet with physicians and administrators at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH)
a leading government-funded specialty hospital in Kumasi
He was tasked to observe and engage with local medical staff to identify critical gaps in care
Through informal focus groups and semi-structured interviews
he evaluated the scope and delivery of orthopedic services at KATH and assessed the level of support given to the medical professionals providing that care
The results of his evaluation were concerning: there was a high volume of trauma cases (in this case work accidents and vehicular injuries) due to the region’s heavy industrialization combined with the lack of corresponding safety standards
There was also a serious shortage of specialized orthopedic surgeons: only 15 orthopedists were serving as generalists without specialty training
The gap in expert care for trauma cases was glaringly evident
The physical resource gap was also evident: surgeons faced significant challenges in the operating rooms
including inadequate surgical instruments and oxygen and power shortages during surgeries
patients who got surgery at KATH suffered from these gaps
but still they were the relatively lucky ones because they actually underwent surgery
Many patients left the emergency room against medical advice because they could not afford surgery for even simple open fractures
They either died of their injuries or suffered permanent severe disability that could never be reversed
Grose was deeply moved by the disparities in medical care between the U.S
he began to perform pro bono surgeries on patients at KATH (and has continued to do so for 4 years)
he and the GMHED team initiated a long-term project to improve quality orthopedic care in Ghana by focusing on building sustainable capacity and providing specialized training
This entails establishing a surgical orthopedic trauma fellowship program at KATH; training nursing and OR teams; and procuring donations of implants and surgical tools in an effort to upgrade hospital facilities and equipment
Grose and his team of nine other surgeons and countless administrators from Europe and North America have traveled back and forth to Kumasi in successive 2-4 week blocks to fulfill their mission
They have dramatically changed lives and systems in Ghana
Grose has personally surgically repaired hundreds of individual trauma patients and he and his GMHED team have successfully procured donations of critical surgical equipment including large amounts of surgical implants
and a fluoroscopy machine (a type of medical imaging device that provides real-time
moving X-ray images of the inside of the body during surgery)
Money for this equipment has come from private donors and healthcare companies including Johnson & Johnson’s Global Health Initiative
the team will graduate the first two orthopedic trauma specialists this summer
Grose met with the Honorable Minister of Health
Kwabena Mintah Akandoh at his office in Accra
The two discussed HSS efforts to create an orthopaedic Center of Excellence at KATH offering subspecialty training in all areas of orthopedics and then to branch out throughout Ghana and West Africa to create even more Centers of Excellence
The plan is to develop a series of musculoskeletal training programs that will serve all of West Africa
By training local surgeons to expert levels
the GMHED team will create a sustainable model that not only addresses the immediate needs but also enables the development of further fellowships in orthopedics within Ghana
one-year immersive subspecialty training through partnerships
One such partnership is with the Foundation for Orthopedics and Complex Spine (FOCOS) in Accra and will provide training in joint replacements and spine surgery
Other partnerships include: one with Harvard Medical School to provide a training program in pediatric oncology; another with Dr
Mark Barry and COEDN.org to provide training in pediatric orthopedics; and a partnership with University of Calgary to provide training in sports medicine
The training programs are designed to ultimately expand beyond Ghana and West Africa to reach surgeons in neighboring countries
This ripple effect can significantly improve orthopedic care across the entire region
If you are inspired by these extraordinary efforts to address global health inequity
please think about donating to the GMHED team by going to www.hss.edu/give and enter GMHED as the designee for the donation
as well as by company and individual donations
and all members of the GMHED team give their time and services voluntarily and for free
Several other local surgeons are involved in this project: David Wellman (Westchester Medical Center), Jason McKean (Northwell) and Milan Sen (Jacobi). For more information on this amazing project, go to: https://vimeo.com/1021862740/1edb265e66

Ruben Santiago was violating an order of protection when he forcibly entered the 37-year-old female’s home on Jan
and shot her with a .38 caliber revolver in the neck and hand
Santiago’s depraved actions highlight the dangers that victims of domestic violence all too often face,” said Westchester County District Attorney Susan Cacace
“It is paramount that we in law enforcement do all that we can to protect domestic abuse victims and to seek justice when they are harmed
Santiago’s sentence of 20 years to life sends a strong message that acts of violence like this will not be tolerated in Westchester County.”
Santiago was apprehended by the FBI’s Westchester Safe Streets Task Force the day after the heinous attack
Westchester County Court Judge Maurice Williams also sentenced Santiago to five years of post-release supervision

There has been a growing number of motor vehicle accidents – some even fatal
including collisions with pedestrians or cyclists—in Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow
leading up to the March 20 “Safe Streets For All” workshop at Tarrytown’s Senior Citizens Center
It was the first of two meetings scheduled in 2025 to “develop a Comprehensive Safety Action Plan to prevent serious injury and death on roadways,” according to Tarrytown’s website
A collaboration of the villages of Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow and the Public Schools of the Tarrytowns
the Safety Action Plan is funded by a grant from the U.S
Department of Transportation for its Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program
It was a key initiative from the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Action (IIJA)
Heading up the project planning team are three private firms: TYLin
with TYLin’s Kelly McGuinness as project manager
supplemented by a comprehensive power point presentation
the safe streets that the committee—really all of us—yearn for aren’t so safe
According to data from the New York State Department of Transportation
during the five-year period between 2019 and 2023
the combined villages of Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow had 698 crashes involving motor vehicles
with 124 of them resulting in an injury or fatality
Twenty-six people were seriously injured and three (all pedestrians) were killed
“One traffic death is too many,” lamented McGuinness
“yet we’re actually seeing an upward trend
So we’re here today to reduce those incidents of the most serious injuries and fatalities on traffic roadways in Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown.”
the plan will secure additional state and federal funding beyond the initial SS4A grant for the study
She stressed the importance of crafting specific construction projects in order to get more grants
“All of this will be data-driven and community-enhanced
so your input will help inform our safety strategies,” she explained
We don’t always know where the near misses are
We really want to understand from you; we want to listen.”
Residents can share their views through an online survey: http://bit.ly/safestreets4all
revealed that the most dangerous days—especially for pedestrians—are Mondays and Thursdays between the hours of 3:00 to 5:00 p.m
And intersections: are where a full 85% of fatal or serious injury crashes happen
The project will be overseen by the Safety Action Plan Steering Committee consisting of municipal staff
organizations and crash victims’ groups that will provide guidance and assistance
It was around the 30-minute mark of the meeting when attendees were invited to circulate among various stations around the room where they could speak with project representatives
write comments on post-it notes to stick on charts and maps
pinpointed treacherous areas on a map and left many suggestions
most often advocating for more sidewalks and bike lanes–and complaining about reckless drivers
McGuinness described the circumstances of one of the fatal accidents
a driver pulled around a car stopped in front of him and struck a pedestrian whom he didn’t see crossing there
Final plans for traffic modifications should be completed by the end of 2025
when the project team will provide responses to the community’s earlier feedback
including focus groups in the high school and other local gatherings

and it’s time for a good old fashioned public domain adaptation
Washington Irving’s 1820 short story The Legend of Sleepy Hollow has been a fall favorite for generations and
While today’s most recognizable iteration of the story is probably Tim Burton’s 1999 film
Ichabod Crane has been no stranger to the small screen
Grab a sweater and join me on a brisk autumn walk through a few televisual versions of the enduring Halloween tale
Did you know that Jeff Goldblum once played Ichabod Crane
rubber-limbed Crane feels like a good physical match to Goldblum’s whole vibe
hands that dangled a mile out of his sleeves
and his whole frame most loosely hung together.” Sounds Goldblumian to me
This made-for-TV movie aired on Halloween night of 1980 on NBC
which… looks absolutely nothing like New York’s Hudson Valley
For a story that sets the scene so beautifully
What should be a colorful fall landscape is just piles of snow
Former football star Dick Butkus co-stars as town bully Brom Bones
reading every line like he’s in an infomercial
Everyone is costumed like they’re giving a guided tour of Colonial Williamsburg
One thing this telling gets right is the superstitious nature of the residents of Sleepy Hollow
with children and adults alike mentioning eerie apparitions beyond the Horseman
It more or less keeps to the plot of Irving’s story
SHELLEY DUVALL’S TALL TALES AND LEGENDS (1985)
her Tall Tales and Legends anthology series was just as fun and packed with celebrities
with Beverly D’Angelo as Katrina Van Tassel
Charles Durning serves as both the narrator and Doffue Van Tassel
Katrina’s uncle and a character invented for the show
Tim Thomerson rounds out the cast as Brom Bones
This is the only adaptation in this bunch that truly leans into Ichabod Crane’s neuroses and superstitiousness
Begley’s Crane is constantly clutching a talisman or hanging garlic
eyes darting around anticipating imminent danger
he’s depicted as popular with the woman of Sleepy Hollow
urbane weirdo entirely different from the other men in town
and one of the most faithful adaptations of the story to be found on television
Genuinely creepy while still gentle enough for kids
a group of kids gathering to share stories around a fire
always made me want to start a Midnight Society of my own
While this Canadian series often came up with original stories
it became a great place for current and future stars to dabble in a little horror
Watch long enough and you’ll see Ryan Gosling (co-starring with Gilbert Gottfried!)
Called “The Tale of the Midnight Ride,” the story is told by prospective Midnight Society member (and classic TV little brother) Tucker
placing the legend in the context of a new kid moving into present day Sleepy Hollow
It transfers some Crane-like tendencies onto that new kid
a charming nerd who draws the school bully’s ire by flirting with the girl he likes
It’s a riff on the story more than a straight adaptation
and real denizens of Sleepy Hollow probably don’t have such strong Canadian accents (sore-y!) but it’s a fun
The last stop on our tour through the public domain is the most recent
and the biggest departure from Irving’s original story
at a time when the traditional networks were willing to take chances on high concept genre shows
likely inspired by cable hits like The Walking Dead and American Horror Story
a number of other horror series came and went
it’s best to forget most of what you might know about the short story
a former Oxford professor who came to the side of Washington and the Colonists
Rather than hearing the story of the Hessian years later
this Ichabod Crane is the man responsible for separating the horseman from his head
only to rise from the dead in modern day Sleepy Hollow
He teams up with Lieutenant Abbie Mills (Nicole Beharie) to figure out what happened to him
The first two seasons featured greats like Clancy Brown
all of whom get respectable arcs and plenty to do
It settles into a monster of the week serial while Crane and Mills also fight season-long enemies like demons
the four horsemen of the apocalypse (get it?)
Benjamin Franklin Frankenstein’ing dead soldiers to make a superpowered monster (Beharie calls it Franklinstein’s
it’s very funny.) It’s delightful to watch Mison rail against everything from fast food to credit card debt
steely and bold but brimming with emotion and vulnerability
Their chemistry together was off the charts
its willingness to throw a bunch of weird stuff at the wall and make it stick through the charm offensive of Beharie and Mison
citing a lack of concern for her health and wellbeing
and unequal treatment between her and her co-star
Sleepy Hollow limped to the barn in 2017 with a shortened season set in Washington
having squandered the goodwill it built in its first two seasons
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow endures because it’s a perfect piece of autumnal Americana
tucked away farming community with its superstitious villagers and local hauntings
It’s been around long enough and retold often enough that Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman are nearly instantly recognizable characters
Sleepy Hollow voters picked a new village president for the first time in 24 years
Trustee Courtney Boe appeared headed to victory with 567 votes
Incumbent Stephan Pickett did not seek reelection
“The most common topic I hear from residents is that they don’t know what’s going on,” Boe said in a previous Daily Herald article
“They don’t feel they can voice their opinions because they don’t feel heard or engaged.” Boe said she would make village board packets available before meetings
McGuire said she would allow residents to ask questions at board meetings
“I will not be silencing our residents,” she said

It’s no tall tale that Halloween lingers for about three months in Sleepy Hollow
the village (and its underworld) are brought to life
as ghost- and goblin-chasers emerge from the shadows and descend upon the area for a good bone chilling paired with a solid lesson in history
here is everything you need to know and do when braving a Halloween season like no other
If time allows only a mere a taste of the annual festivities

and a guest appearance by none other than the Headless Horseman himself
Those that fear the dark (no judgement here) can embark on illuminating guided day tours of the hidden corners of Philipsburg Manor
the gristmill that inspired Irving’s timeless tale
Make a true day of it with an immersive tour of the property proper
learning about the slaves who labored for the Philipse family during the 1750s
Ride in for a night of chills and thrills with master illusionists Mark Clearview and Nick Wallace
who bend the mind with their quicker-than-the eye magic tricks and possess a knack for conjuring locally famous spirits (looking at you
this open-air village intends to dazzle and delight with fortune teller tales
and a rare oddity: photo ops with the Headless Horseman
Travel back in time deep into the raw woods for an immersive theater experience
as storytellers share spine-tingling tales of Hulda the Witch and other local legends
Good old fashioned jump scares and rip-roaring music await on this guided walk-through haunted house
which ends with a photo op with the Headless Horseman
day or night (kerosene lanterns lead the way after dark)
allow visitors to soak up the sublime surrounds at this 175-year-old graveyard and offer homage at the final resting places of some of New York State’s most famous residents
this well-attended annual procession steps off from Patriot’s Park (where The Legend of Sleepy Hollow‘s Ichabod Crane first spots the Headless Horseman) and marches south along Broadway
before arriving at Main Street for a block party of eerily epic proportions with live music
and a chilling cameo by the aforementioned jockey sans noggin
In the grassy shadow of this towering Gilded Age manse
peruse the spooky and kooky oddities of Hudson Valley makers and crafters
Stick around for nightfall when guests are welcomed inside the castle for candlelit guided tours that delve into the darker side of past inhabitants
Docent-led hour-long tours take only the bold on a journey back in time to discover the tales and unexplained events that have plagued the inhabitants of this National Historic Landmark
built in 1872 and revered for its one-of-a-kind architecture

we lived just a stone’s throw from one of the most over-the-top Halloween towns in the world: Sleepy Hollow
but the times that we celebrated Halloween in Sleepy Hollow were always worth the trek
from roughly late September to a day or so after Halloween
Sleepy Hollow attracts tens of thousands of tourists — an estimated 80,000 to 100,000 people throughout October — who soak up the atmosphere
(Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow usually boasts a population of only 11,000 people — meaning that the town swells almost eight times its size for a month of the year.)
Local resident Washington Irving published The Legend of Sleepy Hollow in 1820
That classic horror short story — featured in a collection titled The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon
Gent — introduced readers to Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman
And it transformed the harmless pumpkin into something far beyond — more sinister than a mere vegetable
A quick look at the Sleepy Hollow website reveals why (and makes me feel exceedingly jealous of all the fun and games we’ll miss out on)
the town will put on a long list of activities in and around the village to enjoy/fear: Spirits of Sleepy Hollow Country
Octagon House Tour with Reading of The Raven
the Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze (with its 7,000 illuminated pumpkins)
depicted in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow as the spot where Ichabod Crane initially sees the Headless Horseman
I know that my experience as a visitor is far different than what the locals probably feel about it
It’s like living on Cape Cod and dealing with summer traffic
thousands upon thousands of people (my family included) visit Sleepy Hollow for ghostly delights
but where are the locals during all that? They’re at home
“I haven’t taken advantage of most of Sleepy Hollow’s touristy spots since I was a kid on school trips,” says Tom Weaver
Sleepy Hollow residents like me hunker down in their homes for the days leading up to Halloween
are like Times Square; and the sidewalks the same way with people
Lucia Ballas-Traynor is Executive Director of the Sleepy Hollow/Tarrytown Chamber of Commerce
It’s her job to advocate for the village and its businesses
Locals appreciate the Legend of Sleepy Hollow connection
but occasionally grow weary of the droves of tourists
But [it’s] a residential area for the Halloween parade [and] we have cars parking all the way up to where I live — on side streets
it took me an hour to go about a mile and a half
Basically nothing else can happen [that day].”
Ballas-Traynor calls the history “an important part of this place,” but stresses that it’s not why she and her family
“I moved because of the proximity to the river,” she says
“No matter where you go in Sleepy Hollow and the village
you always have the majestic Hudson River behind you
As for the locals who steer clear of Sleepy Hollow the week of Halloween
it’s much like people who live in Manhattan and have never been to the Statue of Liberty or the M&M store in Times Square.“That’s exactly it!” Ballas-Traynor says
Suffice it to say that I was not one of those people who avoided tourist destinations
not when I lived close to Sleepy Hollow and not about Halloween at all
One thing I miss the most about my old homes are the Halloween memories: I grew up on Long Island
and my block boasted 26 houses (and the streets surrounding us had just as many)
we’d drive out to the best trick-or-treating spots
As I stare down the reality that I may have a Halloween without trick-or-treaters
I’m considering heading back to Sleepy Hollow for October 31 — or at least sometime this month
I’ve already got my eye on a haunted house walking tour through New Hope to keep the spooky spirit (and the kid in me) satisfied

Some neighbors in Torrance’s Sleepy Hollow are mourning a holiday tradition — selling hot chocolate from their front yards
string-light lined community draws visitors from all over
bringing long lines of cars and crowded sidewalks
But residents are no longer allowed to sell festive drinks or small snacks once the sun goes down
the Torrance City Council expressed concerns about safety and cost around the popular attraction
rejecting a move that would’ve allowed front yard food sales citywide until 9 p.m
who’s lived in Sleepy Hollow (officially known as Seaside Ranchos) for nearly 20 years
used to sell churros from a “Churro Tron,” homemade cookies
his small stand has a sign that reads “this local tradition has been banned by the Torrance City Council,”and he told LAist it’s a shame
“ We have a lot of new families in the neighborhood and those kids are not going to be able to have the same experiences that our kids have had,” he said
“I think tradition is very important to us
That program expired more than two years ago and wasn’t renewed
The 2022 season was treated as an educational period
and the city ended up making an exception the following year that allowed food sales within front yards from 5 p.m
Officials estimated it would have cost the city nearly $200,000 to support this year’s event
mostly for traffic control and code enforcement
which Councilmember Bridgett Lewis said is “ludicrous.”
“ I just can't sit here and justify spending 200 grand on a non-city sanctioned event,” she said
Councilmember Jon Kaji said the holiday lights has morphed into an attraction that outstrips the city's ability to control and properly manage it
He added that the neighborhood becomes so crowded it's “dangerous.”
“ We have to bring down the hammer at some point

Casale has been bombarded with questions about the sweet treats he used to sell
so he decided to make a statement with the sign on his stand
He has fond memories of handing out hot chocolate with his now-grown daughters
who he said would use some of the sales to raise money for their soccer teams
“ I hate to see this tradition go away because it was really spectacular for my kids growing up,” he said
Casale acknowledged that Sleepy Hollow has had issues with outside vendors setting up in people’s driveways and evading code enforcement officers
which he said detracted from the “wholesome” and “magical” event

it's dramatically more peaceful,” she said
People are not allowed to sell food from outside their home
People could be cited for selling in those unpermitted hours or outside the home
such as from an attached garage or driveway
and any additional citations would be $500
“ What that means is when code enforcement goes out there
they will be cited and told they will continue to be cited as long as they are vending,” said Michelle Ramirez
Stationary vendors are not allowed within residential areas
And roaming vendors are banned in areas with narrow sidewalks
which city officials noted applies to Sleepy Hollow
Those vendors could be asked to leave the area
and a code enforcement officer is able to get their identification information

Officers from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) were in Sleepy Hollow Tuesday
According to a statement emailed to The Journal News/lohud by Sleepy Hollow Police Chief Anthony Bueti
ICE notified the department at around 10 a.m
that agents would be in the area for an attempt to serve an immigration warrant on "two specific individuals." Sleepy Hollow police are not involved in the serving of the warrants
"The agent did not state or imply that there would be a 'mass round-up,'" Bueti said in the statement
they were in Sleepy Hollow for the two individuals with a criminal past."
Identities for the individuals were not made available to reporters
police had not been notified as to whether or not the individuals sought by ICE had been served

Pollack told BizBash that it took the planning team four months to plan and execute the 12,000-square-foot exhibition—located on the “rink level” of a post office-turned-Manhattan landmark
guests can finally journey through the experience
beginning with “The Sleepy Hollow Harvest,” where they’ll be “greeted with freshly pressed apple cider and a warm welcome from Washington Irving himself,” Pollack explained
He noted that the planning team is expecting Irving to welcome upward of 10,000 guests
Next up: A venture through “The Hollows” equipped with “black lights [to] uncover ancient tales scrawled on gnarled tree trunks and whispered by the wind,” Pollack told BizBash
“in ‘The Cornfield,’ guests can get lost in a field of golden corn
where each turn reveals a new character and setting from ‘Sleepy Hollow,’ brought to life through dramatic visuals and narration.” “Ichabod’s Enchanted Grove,” which features a mushroom bounce house
is Pollack's personal favorite touchpoint because it showcases just how much the experience has tapped into the magic of the Halloween season for kids and kids-at-heart alike
Attendees can expect appearances from the likes of Ichabod Crane
the supernatural-obsessed Connecticut schoolteacher who serves as the protagonist in Irving’s tale
as well as brawny jokester Brom Bones and Katrina Van Tassel
the love interest of both Ichabod and Brom.
In a directly adjacent “chamber” to the cornfield
guests will stumble into “Ichabod’s Enchanted Grove,” where they'll find “towering toadstools” as their “imaginations run wild,” Pollack teased
adding that this is his personal favorite touchpoint.
The “Whimsical Woodland”—a mushroom forest bounce house—is a space Pollack and his team are especially proud of because it showcases just how much the experience has tapped into the magic of the Halloween season for kids and kids-at-heart alike.
guests will then traverse into an area called “The Witch’s Hearth”—a nod to Katrina
a witch—where they’ll “settle into the enveloping aroma of herbal concoctions and roasting apples,” Pollack described
before heading toward the “Headless Horseman’s fateful midnight ride” in what’s called “The Haunted Tunnel.” Though most of Sleepy Hollows is a family-friendly experience designed for all ages
an adults-only happy hour will take place weekly in "The Witch's Hearth," where guests aged at least 21 can sip on seasonal concoctions.Rendering Courtesy of HEROOther special programmed events surrounding the fall installation: "Seedling Saturday Harvest Parties" (costume parties) and "Sleepy Hollow Halloween Cinema" nights.Rendering Courtesy of HERO
And because no autumn festival is complete without a pumpkin patch
Pollack said the MATTE team was sure to include just that
guests will actually be able to pick their perfect pumpkin here—and “under a painted sunset,” Pollack said
It's one generated with the help of a tablet
Attendees will be able to use the tech to draw their dream clouds on a tablet—which will then be projected onto screens above
And for guests who want to revel in the autumn air
an adjoining “Jack O’Lantern Atelier” will be dedicated to a carve-and-decorate-your-own pumpkin activity.
There will also be special programmed events surrounding the fall installation
including family-friendly "Seedling Saturday Harvest Parties," where guests are told to come in costume and expect seasonal treats and activities
as well as weekly happy hours in "The Witch’s Hearth," where adults can sip on seasonal concoctions
"Sleepy Hollow Halloween Cinema" nights are also running every Wednesday with a lineup of classic films like The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Beetlejuice.

A wonderful memory of an extraordinary accomplishment has given way to a wrenching turn of events for Sleepy Hollow’s wrestling program
It was only last winter that eighth-graders Dorian Hidalgo
Kellas stood shoulder to shoulder with freshmen Silas Corveddu and Rafael Rodriguez and beamed with pride as newly-crowned sectional champions
They had come up through the ranks at Sleepy Hollow and learned their lessons so well that they achieved sectional supremacy at remarkably young ages
the future seemed blindingly bright for the Horsemen
Apparently convinced they could create better athletic and academic opportunities for themselves elsewhere
everyone from that star-studded group except Jiminez left the program that had so meticulously developed their talent for years
Hidalgo and Rodriguez transferred to Iona Prep
Corveddu opted for Hotchkiss School in Salisbury
heavyweight Kellas took his fiery nature and abundant talent to Blair Academy
With highly regarded head coach Brian Tompkins missing significant time due to illness
it was left to his son Connor to make the most of the talent that remained
Sleepy Hollow is hardly alone among public schools struggling to retain their finest student-athletes
“We don’t have any ill will or hard feelings toward anyone who is not here
They have their personal decisions they made and nothing against them,” Connor said
Senior captain Brandon Arevalo said he understood the decisions the athletes and their families made
They are going to a better place for them to take it to the next level,” he said
“It’s going to benefit them for the future.”
Arevalo and the others kept their heads down and continued to work hard
junior Miles Sheridan and Michael Variano in producing at least 25 wins this season
His family has maintained strong ties to the school for many years
was a two-time state champion under Tompkins
Sleepy Hollow’s wrestling room feels like a second home to Jiminez
There are high hopes that Jiminez can produce another sectional crown
“He’s definitely one of the top kids in his weight class,” Connor said
It’s been a part of his family and who he is
He wants to do well and succeed and the time he puts in is showing.”
Variano made tremendous strides after he struggled to get above the break-even mark last season
Sheridan looks to be a force in the sectionals at 170 pounds
But instead of being the powerhouse everyone expected
Sleepy Hollow was suddenly forced into rebuilding mode
“We only graduate a couple of seniors who contributed to the lineup this year,” he noted
“We have some returners and some kids who are new to the sport
They really dedicated themselves to the season.”
The future would appear to be bright again with approximately 30 wrestlers who show promise at the modified level
