Smithville Mayor Josh Miller is asking the Smithville Fire Department for more purchasing options for replacing one of the fire engines
Miller addressed the board of aldermen last Thursday during a budget meeting
and three different options to pay for that truck
The remarks came after Smithville Fire Chief Charlie Parker requested the purchase of a Pierce Custom Enforcer PUC Pumper
The request was made on April 14 during a budget meeting
where Parker stated that the delivery of the proposed fire truck would be 37-38 months of order date and would only cover the cost of the truck itself
The request would replace the department’s current 2001 model
the cost of equipment needed for the new truck would range between $150,000 to $200,000
and I don’t have anything to do with city government
and I’m seeing something was passed without any other options
“I do not feel comfortable in voting for something that expensive
I honestly think Charlie (Fire Chief Charlie Parker) should have put more options on the table.”
“I spent most of my day on the phone with sales reps
and I haven’t even seen specs on the one (fire truck) that Charlie has
I talked to a guy that sells to Cumberland County
And even Donny Green (DeKalb Fire Chief) had bought some of these trucks
“I’m not saying that this is the truck to buy,” Miller continued
Don’t bring me one number and not bring me more options.”
“I was trying to get it as close to this other truck as I possibly could
you’re looking at somewhere around $860,000
“I reached out to the Cumberland County Fire Department
but I talked to the chief in Putnam County
and they had nothing bad to say about these (Rosenbauer) trucks.”
“The perception of this I do not like,” Miller told the board
“Spending that much money without having other things on the table
if this $1.2 million is voted on May the 5th
I want to make sure we’re getting a good truck for the money.”
but when we have a budget that we’re fixing to pass with $1.2 million in it
I think we need to look at options and make a decision before the end of the year in December.”
While Fire Chief Charlie Parker was out of town and not present at the meeting
Assistant Fire Chief Jeff Wright was in attendance and spoke to the board
because of the inside connections we have with Peirce
The pumper (fire truck) that you’re talking about
“One department told me that they like their truck better than Pierce
but Pierce is not the only truck out there.”
They have a longstanding history with the fire department business as far as making apparatus
We’ve been very fortunate to purchase the three we have.”
saying he had not received the same feedback about Rosenbauer trucks as the mayor
but some of the people I know that have used those weren’t very happy with them
Wright also claimed that while working in Murfreesboro
some other brand fire trucks purchased by that city
had been delivered with ‘check engine’ lights on and other defects
Wright also said that the city’s price for a Pierce truck would actually be cheaper than usual due to connections with the company with local firefighters
Wright also warned about the possibility of truck prices increasing over the next few months
“I know last year Charlie asked for another truck and from last year to this year the price for the same truck went up $200,000.”
“I’m not knocking Pierce at all,” Miller said
“I’m just saying there’s not been a lot of options put on the table
I don’t want it to look like we’re rubber stamping something and sending it on through because it’s the only thing on the table.”
When asked how much it would cost to update the current engine
He reported that it would cost $650,000 to bring Engine 2 up to current safety standards
Mayor Miller is requesting other options for the city to look at
it’s what we can afford that will get the job done.”
SMITHVILLE — If you confine your Central Texas day trips to the main highways
quasi-quirky railroad town maintains its singular character in part because it is buffered from the metastasizing Austin sprawl by two state parks
lakes and lost pines hold back the tide — for now
Unlike some Texas towns overly eager to reinvent themselves
located some 45 minutes east of Austin off Texas 71
railroad-and-movie history and creatively reinvigorated downtown
Start with the important stuff: A few weeks ago
my day-trip buddy and I sampled four eateries:
Our guide for much of visit was Smithville Bruce Blalock
I went to work on the railroads," Blalock says
He also labored on the steam engine that runs from Cedar Park to Burnet
"You sit and talk to a neighbor," Blalock says of travel by way of AmTrak
"You come back with your DNA mixed with other people."
Blalock enjoyed a career in marketing and graphic design in Houston and Austin
Yet his roots go back to his birthplace in Smithville
Settlements in the area started with trading posts perched above the Colorado River
Local legend has it that the town's name was settled by the flip of a coin that might have been a double-headed nickel
I've been had by a fickle nickel!" the loser complained
I heard several versions of the fickle-nickel story this day
Murray Burleson of the famed early Texan family by that name and others bought up land to become the Smithville Townsite Company when inside intelligence indicated it would be crossed by the proposed Taylor
Seven years later Smithville became a "division headquarters" with a roundhouse and a car shop and control over the rail line from Waco to San Antonio to Houston/Galveston
The town was incorporated in 1895 and by the early 1900s
when it became the biggest settlement in Bastrop County
1911 an explosion at the roundhouse killed nine men outright and injured 12 others while blowing steel shrapnel all over the town
and the railroad's frantic efforts to regain traffic bled the companies dry by the 1950s
Smithville's roundhouse survived until the 1960s
What remains of the large terminal and car shops are brick ruins that one can view across the tracks at the Railroad Park and Museum
The museum shares a park building with the local chamber of commerce
the museum is open whenever the chamber offices are
unlike many small Texas institutions like this one
The movie that set the trend for more than 100 subsequent films
TV shows and commercials was the 1998 drama "Hope Floats" that starred Sandra Bullock and Harry Connick Jr
We visited the handsomely columned Smithville house featured in the movie
to the side of which one can contemplate the namesake tree
Austin director Terrence Malick put up the cast and crew in nearby houses
so that they became for a while a part of the neighborhood
When Malick expressed a desire to film an old-fashioned biplane
the next morning Smithville's city manager reportedly responded: "What color?" Now that's the kind of service that keeps the movie makers coming back for more
Stay at a real bed and breakfast this timeThese days
when someone says they're booking a "B&B," it often means a house or apartment
with perhaps a kitchen for preparing a meal from local market finds
there might be a pastry or two tucked into the mini-fridge
"B&B" has become almost interchangeable with "Airbnb," blurring the lines of what a traditional bed and breakfast was
The Katy House (201 Ramona St.) in Smithville
stands as one of the longest-operating traditional bed and breakfasts in Texas
welcoming guests from around the world for more than 31 years
"It's a lost art," says owner Tiffany Prior
referring to the family-style breakfast she sets with her husband
"When was the last time you sat beside a stranger
It's an immersive experience that’s hard to explain until you've done it."
comes with its own generous history of hospitality
including a makeover years ago by our Smithville guide Bruce Blalock and his wife
Dally a while at a Smithville parkWhile the Railroad Park and Museum conforms to the linear pattern of the nearby set of railroad tracks — reduced from historical numbers — many of the other parks in Smithville follow the sinuous curves of the Colorado River
We started with the tiny Colorado River View Park
We followed that brief experience with the slightly larger Independence Park
semi-hidden at the terminus of NW Loop 230
which at least offered some local history on plaques
Plenty of signs at intersections directed us to the oasis on MLK Drive
but GPS sent us to several locations near the railroad tracks before we spotted some sports fields
we were able to explore the historic neighborhoods south of the tracks.)
we wished that some of the old recreational facilities were still standing at Shipp Lake
an oxbow lake that drivers along Texas 71 will remember from a sharp curve and a low bridge
We did study some illuminating photos of earlier residents cavorting at Shipp Lake at the Smithville Heritage House and Museum
While Smithville's downtown offers the expected vintage and antique stores
some of them vast and crammed with curiosities
it also gives plenty of space over to galleries that feature the work of local artists
Nobody used the term "artist colony" — that expression might have gone out of fashion — but we met artists everywhere
and even stumbled on a pottery painting session in a residential neighborhood
Smithville records much of its culture and history is shiny tessellation
A prominent piece by local artist Stephanie Distefano honors musician and composer Hannibal Lokumbe
We saw other examples of this style at Mosaic Art and Home
a gallery and shop owned by artists Jeri and Walter Winslett
along with a monumental set of mosaics in an alley at the Comfort Café
We took the long way into Smithville and entered the town from the east rather than the west
we immediately spotted three or four superb churches
which was open for silent prayer before a 5 p.m
We lingered in this beautifully decorated spot
and found an even more potent chapel on the parish campus
Very little in the way of signs explained its function
but it was like stumbling on a sacred retreat
Nearby and magnificent — but closed — were the formalized neo-classical First Presbyterian Church
Any number of small Texas towns have erected memorials to American military veterans
but Smithville has gone out of its way to honor its heroes going back to the American Revolution
Smithville Texas Veterans Memorial Park centers around a winged figure on a high pedestal
but includes a fountain of water pierced by a combat helmet on a weapon
and more somber metal name plaques than I've seen at any other Texas small-town memorial
The lists are divided among American wars and include veterans who were not from Bastrop County
but who are devoutly remembered by local residents
Citadels of Smithville history on every streetWhat one must do in Smithville is walk its streets
There one finds row after row of historic structures
Some of them are landscaped to look like somewhere else
far from their core native range in the Deep South
but one can hardly deny their shiny-leafed magnificence if nurtured over the decades (not all are)
For background on matters historical and botanical
contact the folks with the Smithville Heritage Society or the allied Smithville Garden Club
Members of both groups mingled on the porch of the Smithville Heritage House and Museum the day we visited
kindly sat with us in the old house's living room and explained the group's history
Some concern remains that newcomers are not as invested in the town's past
but my experience tells me that those things run in cycles
The right newcomer will come along to help bolster the society's future
10: Listen to the country quietOver the years
several of my Austin acquaintances announced that they were moving to Smithville
they made new friends and welcomed adventurous visitors
That's one of the attractions of rural life
Plenty of people whom we encountered felt inextricably part of the land
Others had moved here to be part of the territory as well
but clearly they brought along their outsider ways with them
I noticed no tensions between these cultural camps
This story was updated to change the headline
There’s a moment every spring in DeKalb County when you walk outside
and the garden just seems to be calling out for those sturdy little plants with their promise of juicy rewards
If you started your tomatoes indoors or picked up healthy transplants from a local stand
now’s the perfect window to get them in the ground
Nothing beats the flavor of a homegrown tomato —especially after you’ve waited for it
and maybe even argued with it a bit through the growing season
You’ll want to “plant them deep,” which just means removing the lower leaves and burying the stem up to just below the top cluster of leaves
That buried stem will actually sprout new roots
unless you're going for a jungle vibe (which I’ve done
those little foot-high plants become monsters by July if they’re happy
Don’t wait until they’re flopping over and loaded with green fruit to wrestle on a cage
Whether you’re a stake person or a cage person—no judgment—just get them in early
now’s a good time to do that (see last week’s column!)
You can also work in a little compost or well-balanced fertilizer as you plant
and keeping weeds (and blight spores) from splashing up on your plants
Don’t forget to water deeply and regularly
Deep roots mean sturdier plants and better fruit
A little tomato wisdom from a friend of mine: “Tomatoes will forgive a lot—but forgetting to water them when it’s hot isn’t one of those things.”
Griffin’s has long been a trusted source for fresh fruits
It has also been named “Best of the Best” Produce Market in DeKalb County by the Smithville Review many years running
We have lost another prominent resident here on the mountain
of the Short Mountain community passed away Friday
We are offering our condolences to Michael's family at this sad time
Please keep the Prater family in your prayers
A peaceful week with several rounds of rain but nothing severe in the forecast for us
Here we go again with the Post Office going up on postage stamps from seventy-three cents to a whopping seventy-eight cents each starting in July if they can get approval for this hike in the price of a stamp
For the service we get from our mail delivery nowadays
I feel like this raise in the price of a postage stamp is ridiculous
which I can speak from first-hand experience
has reached the point where it might get to its destination
it is far better to take them to the Post Office to mail instead of putting them in your mailbox
Thieves (you know the criminal element in our society) getting braver about breaking into mailboxes across the country
Nothing today is better like some would tell you
Those "better days" that we had long ago do not exist anymore
are but only a few of the hazards we as Americans have to deal with on a daily basis
Being well-protected in your home is a must as God expects that of us at all times
Pitiful that our society has come to this
but we must take "all precautions necessary" to ensure we take care of business if someone tries to invade our home
The message to all of us couldn't be made any clearer
Please keep the following people in your prayers: Dusty Johnson
get ready for the 151st running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on May 3rd
I love to watch the race because I've always loved horses
No way can a person miss all those "out of this world" hats that will adorn so many ladies that day
are so outlandish and I'm wondering if birds have ever made a nest in one of them
Saturday morning birds were singing loudly as I was sitting at our patio table writing
I also head a bobwhite off in the distance and even turkeys were gobbling near the base of the mountain
My first hummingbird showed up a few days ago
Pleasantness like this only happens in the country so get out and enjoy the beautiful sights and sounds of nature that God has given you

About the Smithville Smithies girls basketball teamThe Smithies are a lot like the Rovers
starting with the fact that they are very much built on the defensive end
Smithville held Columbia to single digits in three of four quarters in Wednesday's regional semifinal win
Madi Singer and Aly Wickens are three of the Smithies' leading scorers with Wickens scoring 22 when they faced the Rovers earlier this season
if you asked who would win the Wayne County Athletic League in girls' basketball
Graduating a star like Naomi Keib and grit players like Cammi Wickens and Audrey Sidle
There was also a Norwayne squad that was brimming with potential and a Chippewa team that was loaded
The few that did believe sat in the confines of the Wilbur Berkey Fieldhouse and boy
overcoming some health issues that limited stars like Madi Singer and Aly Wickens among others at times
What they finished with on Thursday evening was the first outright league title since 2012
second league title in three years and 12th in program history
they capped their regular season with a record of 19-3 and were 12-2 in the league with a 58-24 win over Danville

This might be the best defensive team that I’ve coached in my 11 years — they defend at such a high level.”
this one was about as sweet as it could be due to the doubters and the hurdles they had to climb throughout the season to get here
“We worked so hard for this and coming into the season
I feel that a lot of people didn’t believe that we could
it was pretty big for us to pull it out and to prove to ourselves and the area that we are a good team.”
I am super proud of everybody,” added Wickens
We worked really hard and after losing the group of seniors from last year
it was really cool to see the underclassmen step up and fill those spots
Stepping up all around was a huge key for Smithville
but also something that brought this team together as they focused on a common goal with an unbridled effort

“We came into the summer with the mindset that we were going to work our butts off,” said Singer
“That is what really made us close or brought us together
so did the dubs as the Smithies racked them up quickly
“We were rolling in the first half of the season
we’re good and we can do this,’ that really fueled our fire.”
Kiersten Ross or Faith Lengacher who led the way
Most times the culprits were Singer (13.9)
Wickens (12.1) and Keib (11.5) as they each averaged double-figure scoring for the season
Keib) fed off each other and that fueled our role players,” said Nickles
they’re all kids that people didn’t have on the radar to start the season
but they’ve all stepped up and made big plays in big moments
More: Madi Singer: A story of dedication, team driven and a drive to succeed
Combine that all in one mixing bowl and you had a recipe for success as they fought for each other and put the ‘we’ in front of the ‘I’ and the focus on the team
It’s what led Singer and Wickens to identify the words ‘united’ and ‘incredible’ when asked to describe this squad with one word
“We all work really well together; we know each other's games and strengths
make big shots and make big plays for us this year
this team got the chance to write its own story
they were united both on and off the floor and in the clutch
no matter who had the basketball in their hands

Texas - A weather-resistant RV park in Smithville has been designed with safety in mind for guests and travelers who may need shelter from storms
It's a building approach that's being encouraged by FEMA and The National Weather Service to be "Weather Ready."
CBS Austin Chief Meteorologist Chikage Windler went to see the RV Park under construction in September of 2024 when this story aired
the Centennial Creekside RV Park is now set to open on January 2nd
Owner Steve Simmons says he spent extra time and money to ensure the RV park would have concrete block bathrooms that could protect guests from tornadoes and severe storms
The area was hard-hit during Hurricane Harvey during heavy rain
which is exploding with growth as the headquarters for SpaceX
That's resulting in increased demand for affordable housing
In addition to providing space for long-term residents
Simmons says his RV Park will also cater to travelers and vacationers who may visit two nearby state parks or stop in to visit the shops in downtown Smithville
"RVers are some of the most vulnerable populations when it comes to storms
but this brand new RV park in Smithville is hoping to build in a sense of security," says CBS Austin Chief Meteorologist Chikage Windler
This small town with a big heart is 15 minutes east of Bastrop
"We took a pretty big hit on Hurricane Harvey
So there's a lot of practice out here
I think we get it all in Texas," says Steve Simmons
Simmons says he designed it to be as weather-resillient as possible
"I literally designed the building as I went because of the weather to keep the heat out and the cool in
I wanted some place for people to have the security of being able to go to if there was a storm," he explains
Construction was underway on the community center
where the bathrooms are built to serve as storm shelters
"So this would be the safest place here
The walls as you can see are eight inches thick
The doors will be here will be metal doors
That will be also tied to the cinder block
the whole walls all the way around are all cinder block," says Simmons
"My dissertation was focused on the needs
and whether we needed more public and private tornado shelters
And the answer appears to be yes," explains Dr
Dr. Ceecee created a website called findyourtornadoshelter.com
"A good example is in RV parks and mobile homes
We need hardened locations to make sure that the occupants are safe during a tornado," says Dr
Simmons says he's not only building for safety
we decided to put Starlink in number one because it's satellite
so you don't have to worry about lines going down
All of the electric infrastructure and everything is underground here
So we don't have to worry about poles going down
And we're actually even going to incorporate a generator so that if the power does go out that we'll still have Starlink
we'll still have electric capabilities," Simmons adds
He's also building for energy efficiency
so this insulation is foam insulation and it's the new technology because it makes essentially the building airtight
It keeps the heat out and the cool in," Simmons explains
he's building for his family's future
spending a little bit more money so it lasts longer
but also at the same time making it safer," Simmons says

The Smithies were led by Jax Riggenbach with 10 points with Ethan Piatt and Quinn Maibach both chipping in eight
"It wasn't all negative tonight," said Smithville coach Corey Kauffman
"It was certainly good to play against that type of speed and in a tournament environment
"We have a young enough group that we can continue to improve as the year goes on

it was a special moment when the Smithville girls basketball led by seniors Madi Singer and Aly Wickens met Smithville nation that remained after their Div
VI Regional Final setback to Rootstown 37-36
It wasn’t the outcome they had drawn it up
but none of it erased what had already accomplished

three district appearances and a run to the regional finals over the last four years
just everything that we’ve accomplished,” said senior Aly Wickens

Even more fitting was how their final campaign went for senior Madi Singer and Wickens
many had the Smithies picked for third in the league
many weren’t sure where the road would lead them
and we did our jobs and that’s what got us this far
no one picked us to win the league and no one had us winning a district title
That makes me so much prouder of this team and these girls
“We’re a family and that’s never going to end.”
a team it had lost to 47-34 earlier in the season
Smithville never let this one get too far away
the Smithies kept hanging around until they finally broke through for a brief 29-28 lead early in the fourth
The two teams traded buckets until the Rovers got a steal with just three seconds remaining in regulation to seal a 37-36 win
“They are a great basketball team,” said Wickens
“They have a little of everything between their guards and Nadia Lough

“They pressured us and made things really difficult,” added Smithville coach Eric Nickles

‘row the boat,’ and those kids kept doing it all year long
Someday we'll look back and realize how much we did accomplish
I couldn’t be prouder of this group of kids
Singer joined the elusive 1,000-point club with a team-high 17 points and capped her career with 1,016 points
Wickens chipped in 10 for the Smithies as they shared a hug after the buzzer
“It means so much to have these years with Aly,” said Singer
“She is my best friend and playing with her one last time has meant everything to me
we just told each other how proud we were of each other
“She’s meant everything to me,” concurred Wickens
but through everything our connection has been unbelievable
and I am so thankful for her - thankful for the years that we’ve played together.”
Their impact on the program will be one that will be felt for a while as they were leaders
they looked back on what the program gave them
but Coach Nickles has developed me so much and I couldn’t be more thankful that,” said Wickens
“He’s done everything for us throughout these years and it all started in AAU
he developed me into the player I am today
and he always pushed me to be the best that I can be.”

“I’ve cherished every single relationship with them
We just lift each other up and the relationships we’ve built are ones that will last forever and I’m very grateful for that
but I am super proud of this team,” she added
“We’ve worked so hard and I love my teammates so much
it’s sad that I don’t get to be on the court with them anymore
but I am very proud of us and what we did.”
Nickles took a second longer to think about his seniors and admitted
it stings harder because of their impact and how much they have come to mean to him
They put so much time and effort into what they do and they have for six years
I couldn’t be prouder and I know the younger kids look up to them and that’s what it means to be a Smithie
they work and I just can’t say enough good things about them
that passion and that desire to win kept their team in the game and gave them a shot at the end
That is Smithie basketball and Wickens has embodied that mentality
“It means everything,” she said with a sad smile
“Wearing Smithville across my chest on this jersey the past couple of years
I hope that left a good legacy and I couldn’t be prouder of all the girls that I played with

I think they would tell you they came through it at a really
really good time for Tennessee because we had that family attitude.”
Fulmer himself enjoyed a solid family upbringing in the tiny town of Winchester
“I had just a magical childhood,” Fulmer said
They were the most loving Christian people you could ever imagine
Every time the church opened we were there—Sunday

It’s been real important to me all my life
and I’m thankful for the people who touched my life so much growing up.”
Coach Fulmer left his charmed existence after graduating from Franklin County High School and earned a spot as offensive guard on the Vol football team
“Going away to college was a big deal,” Fulmer said
“I didn’t have a way to pay for my education
I was going to finish,” he said with a chuckle
The basics are still the same—do the right things
the 74-year-old continues walking the Christian walk at his home in Maryville
“I’m reading now 12 Ordinary Men,” Fulmer says
All the apostles/disciples are heroes for all of us
The challenges that they had and the failures that they had made them into the people and leaders they were
Coach Fulmer will be delivering a motivational speech at the 2nd Annual Man Up Dinner at Smithville FBC Sunday
You’re invited to join the coach for “great food
and more importantly a time for men of all ages to connect with God.”

People who live in rural areas have to drive, on average, more than three times further for groceries than the rest of the country
These places where food is scarce are called food deserts
Ever since an EF-5 tornado hit Smithville in 2011
But before this year is over, that will change with the construction of a Freshly’s Market
the store is set to be complete within five months
the founder and CEO of Freshly’s Market
“You probably wouldn’t open up a market in a city that has 600 people
it’s not what you do,” Holliday said
Holliday understands how important a grocery store is to the small town
“We felt it was right and we felt like this is what they need,” Holliday said
Phil Goodwin said this new development is important for the town
“It’s really important,” Goodwin said
we haven’t had that since the tornado really.”
Holliday said access to fresh food is a major factor for health outcomes in Mississippi
“Fresh food is needed,” Holliday said
Because we don’t have access to those things
And if we get access to it we can improve our health and our well-being and we’ll be able to live great fulfilling lives.”
Aside from improving the daily lives of residents
the store will also stimulate the local economy by bringing shoppers from nearby towns said Goodwin
“It’s going to pull people in,” Goodwin said
Holliday reiterated that the store will stimulate Smithville’s economy
“It brings jobs and opportunities that people of course don’t have a grocery store here for years that now
we bring in a different niche to the town,” Holliday said
Goodwin said people have been waiting for this moment since 2011
“People call here every day wanting to know when the grocery store is going to get here,” Goodwin said
this is something we’ve been working on since 2011.”

— A standoff at the Crow’s Creek Campground at Smithville Lake ended in tragedy on October 30 when Paul Clifford Buchholz
died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after hours of negotiation with Clay County deputies
The incident followed an escalating series of events
beginning with a road rage altercation in Excelsior Springs in September when Buchholz reportedly fired shots at another driver
a minor collision (clipped mirrors) in the Walmart parking lot in Excelsior Springs led to Buchholz
a transient who had been staying in the area
chasing the other driver northbound on Highway 69
As the two vehicles approached the Excelsior Springs Animal Clinic
Buchholz allegedly fired multiple shots from a 9mm pistol into the other vehicle
Although the victim’s car sustained damage
Buchholz was tracked by License Plate Reader (LPR) cameras and apprehended by local law enforcement near Watkins Mill State Park
Charged with two felonies—Unlawful Use of a Weapon and Armed Criminal Action—Buchholz was placed on house arrest with a GPS monitor and was due to appear in court on October 29
deputies were alerted to Buchholz’s location at the Crow’s Creek Campground after his GPS monitoring company notified authorities of his whereabouts
explaining that Buchholz was armed and possibly suicidal
Clay County Sheriff’s deputies and a Negotiation Team arrived at the campground and attempted to persuade Buchholz to surrender peacefully
Negotiators spent the morning urging him to leave his camper and disarm
stating he had “warrants and didn’t want to go to jail.” After nearly five hours
The tragic outcome of Buchholz’s standoff serves as a sad reminder of the critical need for mental health awareness and support both locally and more broadly

Texas — Firefighters have made progress containing a wildfire in Bastrop County
which started Thursday near the Smithville Brush Dump
has burned approximately 10 acres and is now 60% contained
according to the Bastrop County Office of Emergency Management

State and local resources returned to the scene Friday morning to conduct mop-up operations
focusing on areas near containment lines for any residual heat
Smoke may be visible in the area from material burning inside the fire's perimeter
The fire's forward progression was stopped Thursday night after crews completed bulldozer lines
and The Heart of Pines Volunteer Fire Department
have been responding to the blaze since it was first reported at approximately 3 acres on Thursday evening
(WTVF) — A chase for a homicide suspect ended in Smithville Thursday night with the man apprehended and a district attorney allegedly firing shots in the process
This happened as a result of the authorities finding three bodies in Warren County on Wednesday near the McMinnville city limits
Sheriff's officials said they recovered the bodies of William Piechocniski
Investigators were able to arrest one of the suspects
Downtown Smithville was shut down much of Thursday evening while police tried to locate Brookins
That is when DA Chris Stanford fired shots during the pursuit of Brookins while he drove away
and the local chief said civilians were in the area
"Unbelievable that Warren County's DA Chris Stanford is running around with the police shooting at police," Smithville mayor Josh Miller wrote on Facebook
he needs to be more confident in his shooting skills
Stanford should leave the police work to the trained professionals."
Mayor Miller said Smithville Police were not given any warning that Warren County law enforcement were in their community looking for suspects
I think it’s a respect thing," said Miller
you’re going to be responsible for that bullet
And I’ve been told that they don’t know where those bullets went."
Stanford clarified that they gave a warning to the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is now investigating Stanford's role in firing a weapon during a police pursuit
In the chaos of trying to pursue the suspects
Hannah Rose was arrested for aggravated assault and attempting to evade law enforcement
She allegedly struck the vehicle of a Homeland Security agent
She was allegedly driving the car where Brookins was a passenger during the police chase
The officer was injured and taken to a hospital in DeKalb County
Authorities said Brookins fled on foot but was taken into custody a couple of hours later without incident by the TBI
Brookins was found near Bell Street on Wade Street walking down the road
Brookins and Root became primary homicide suspects after police discovered a theft of property from those who died
"Leads were quickly developed and the investigation led us to locations in Nashville and Memphis," Warren County Sheriff Jackie Matheny said
"Evidence of theft of property that belonged to at least one of the deceased individuals was found in both Nashville and Memphis
The identification of the suspects was confirmed through the evidence found in these cities."
In a lengthy response from District Attorney Stanford
he is a POST-certified law enforcement officer
authorized to carry his service weapons at all times
"I completed the required 40 hours of trial training for POST certification last year
I completed my 8-hour annual firearms in-service training
I am fully compliant with the law’s requirements in this regard," wrote Stanford
Stanford also claims he shot his weapon in self-defense when the car hit the Homeland Security officer
"The vehicle then drove toward me and others
I fired my service weapon in defense of myself and others at the scene
Based upon my training and the circumstances that presented themselves
I believe my actions were necessary and justified," said Stanford
DA Stanford also announced that District Attorney Craig Northcott will be the assigned the substitute prosecutor that will handle the Warren County triple homicide prosecution
"I am absolutely certain that his office will handle the matter with the seriousness and attention it deserves as they seek justice for the victims and their families," he wrote

“It’s happening this year,” said Katina Holliday-Wiseman

SMITHVILLE - Wrapping up Day 1 at the Battle at the Berkey was host Smithville as it took on the Genoa Area squad that entered with a record of 11-3
the Smithies left little to doubt with the outcome
as they came out clicking on all cylinders
Brennen Piatt and Quinn Maibach each scored in the opening frame
It was all downhill from there as it maintained its advantage in securing a 57-44 win

“We’ve six or seven kids that lead us in scoring at different times this year
so that’s nothing new,” said Smithies coach Corey Kaufman
sometimes we want kids to be a little more selfish than they really are
but that’s encouraging going into the tournament
Teams are figuring out that they can’t key on guys quite so much and that’s good - these guys are starting to play with confidence.”
Leading that charge was senior post Maibach
who found himself matched up against a talented 6-foot-8 junior Walter Plantz
He showed just how good he was as he finished with a team-high 16 points and held Plantz to just nine points on the night
Maibach wasn’t alone as Smithville’s balance kept the Comets off balance defensively
Jax Riggenbach six and Sidle added 10 for the host
Even bigger than their balance was their hustle as they kept possessions alive with all-out efforts and kept Genoa Area at bay with it
"Absolutely," said Kaufman when asked about the tournament feel to the game
(Genoa Area) had double digit three’s and I thought our guys were engaged in terms of help and recover plays
We went from covering Plantz to recovering on our close outs and we played our butts off tonight
Next up for the Smithies is a home game against Dalton on Tuesday
