(WPDE) — Horry County led the state in deadly pedestrian crashes according to the most recent state DOT crash data in 2022 One problematic stretch in Horry County is Socastee Boulevard The South Carolina Department of Transportation conducted a traffic study and has proposed new safety improvements for a portion of Socastee Boulevard but does not include the other portion of the road that is east of Manor Circle Drivers said they were confused as to why the section east of Manor Circle isn't included especially since 2024 DPS data shows that the section is more dangerous and causes more fatal collisions ABC15 asked the South Carolina Department of Public Safety for the number of crashes and deadly crashes along the road from the year-to-date statistics through Nov nearly 73% of collisions and 100% of deadly crashes on Socatee Boulevard happened outside of the proposed improvement area a man was hit and killed as he tried to cross the part of the road not in the improvement plan ABC15 reached out to DOT to find out why the entire boulevard wasn't included in the safety improvement proposal and what goes into their decision "SCDOT uses a data-driven approach to safety and we use many different tools and analyses to help us select locations for safety enhancements A part of that analysis includes crash history including areas with the highest crash density crash data from 2015-2019 was the factor in determining safety study selection when this project was initiated."
