When Alce 101 permanently closed earlier this year, Solana Beach lost a pretty great tequila and mezcal selection. But the partners behind Bluewater Grill
plan to bring a new Baja-Mediterranean concept to the space called Mia’s Solana Beach
“Our real estate philosophy is waterfront Southern California,” Ulcickas explains
the pair asked themselves “What concept do we feel would work in this community?”
Ulcickas believes Alce’s approach of upscale Mexican food was sound—it was just bad timing post-pandemic. The crowds were there, from summertime visitors to locals to people going to the races at Del Mar
“We have to prove the concept first,” he laughs
“[But] we’re confident… we’re excited to come to Solana Beach.”
Mia’s Solana Beach is planned to open in April 2025 at 243 N
Stay tuned for the chef announcement coming in January.

To encourage cycling and walking on scenic highway 101
Encinitas built a protected bike lane along the north and southbound shoulders between Chesterfield Drive in Cardiff and Solana Beach to the south
Soon after the low concrete barriers went up in 2020
there were reports of crashes and injuries
Walkers and slower recreational riders were using the bike lane; faster "spandex riders" were choosing the sharrows; and people were weaving around the wheel stops and bollards
according to traffic commissioner Ron Medak
was the "road furniture" — people were crashing into the structures meant to shield them from traffic
he proposed a "simple fix": replace the class IV separated bikeway with a large 5.5 foot class II lane
"It won't be plastic to run into or give the illusion of safety."
involved these flexi posts (bollards) or wheel stops
and Solana Beach has plenty of space for a wide
buffered class II bike lane in both directions
He also recommended usage data be recorded starting as soon as possible and continuing for a period after the changes are made
the city doesn't know how many people walk
When the class II lane was removed in 2020
"The cyclists would almost immediately start riding in the class II bike lane
And pedestrians can walk on the side of the road."
Others spoke against removing the protected lane
who are more comfortable using the sharrows
she would stop riding if the lane is removed
She suggested the structures might be more helpful than anyone realizes
"How many people have tapped those bollards and wheel stops and woken up?"
suggested education has been missing and should be tried before such a drastic change
"I'm unaware of any rules posted on the cycle track."
Longtime cyclist Chris Giles said he's ridden that stretch hundreds of times "and I've never had a problem with any of the curb stops."
said the addition of the lane has radically changed the road
once dubbed "the gauntlet." It is getting "a ton of use." And the accidents are "all rider error," people going too fast or not paying attention
"We're gonna fight you tooth and nail if you decide to change it."
One area of agreement for possible removal was locations near restaurants
"You'll never catch me on a bicycle in Encinitas
(KGTV) — A retired Solana Beach firefighter is being remembered after passing away while on a cruise vacation last month
died during a snorkeling excursion on a 5-day cruise from Miami to Turks and Caicos
he had said that he wasn't feeling well," Janet Potter said
somebody thought that his color didn't look very good
had stayed on the cruise ship on that day in early February
but doctors later told Janet that her husband likely died before reaching the shore
The medical examiner's initial indication was that Bret suffered a heart attack
"Just missing him so much that it actually hurt and missing being held by him
Just trying to accept doing life without him,” Janet said of her husband of 38 years
She described Bret as her "other half" and a grandfather of nine
Bret Potter worked for the Escondido Fire Department for two years and then spent over 23 years as a firefighter engineer with the Solana Beach Fire Department before being medically retired about a decade ago after suffering a heart attack
"The biggest thing was just serving people
just being with people when times were difficult," Janet said of her late husband
Janet said there were no indications anything was wrong before the tragic incident on the cruise
Bret Potter loved activities related to the ocean
Thoughts of the water have provided his wife some solace
"There's a lot of comfort that comes from [the fact] that he went from the beautiful crystal clear waters into heaven," Janet said
"I can't think of a better way for him to go except for that I would be by his side."
A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help with the costs of transporting Bret Potter's body back to the U.S
A public funeral will be held at noon on March 24

It’s tasty and simple and beautiful.”
Above all, Vále hopes to be a community gathering space helping friends and neighbors connect
Henderson says that as much as he loves wine
he loves bringing people together even more
“Providing a service to others and creating a little landmark in a community—that is something I’m incredibly passionate about and very much looking forward to,” he says

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Solana Beach woman says her political signs have been stolen three times
ABC 10News anchor Aaron Dickens shows how she used AirTags to track the culprits down
It is just getting exhausting," says Amy Bryan
Bryan says the latest incident happened on Oct
In a surveillance video she provided ABC 10News
Bryan says her signs were taken for the first time on Sept
"The first time we did not have any way to track who had done this crime we saw it on our driveway cam
We were just floored that it would happen," she says
We did meet with the individuals involved and we got some satisfaction," Bryan says
Bryan says the teens apologized for the first two incidents in September
But she says the incident in October was a different story
Bryan says it was a different group of teens
The AirTag tracking on her phone indicated the starting point was at her driveway
Bryan says she tracked the tags to La Jolla
our reporter did get a call from one of the homeowners
"My son and a few friends took the signs as a prank
It will not happen again," the homeowner told us
"Is a political sign more than just a sign to you?" Dickens asked
and everyone's right to vote for who they wish," Bryan says

(KGTV) — Some people in Solana Beach feel their freedom of speech is under attack after political signs were stolen from their front yards
We would’ve never expected that to happen," said Cheryl Rosen
who moved to the area with her husband Howard 11 years ago
The Rosens noticed the political sign supporting the Harris-Walz campaign was missing from their front yard on Sept
their neighbor shared security camera footage
which captured three people riding away carrying something in their arms
He has the sign by the spokes," said Howard as he played back the footage for ABC 10News
the Harris-Walz sign was the only one targeted
They think it's three middle schoolers using electric bikes to make a quick escape
Denisevich said it's only happened to him once
but his next-door neighbor had seven signs stolen — all Harris-Walz as well
He sees this as a symptom of a larger issue
which I don’t think is the way we want things to be," Denisevich said
A couple of neighbors reported the incidents to the San Diego Sheriff's Department
a few public posts on the Nextdoor app seem to have stopped the activity for now
“Whatever you want to put on your property
Although the Sheriff's Department is aware of the incidents
they said there is no active investigation
they tell ABC 10News that not much will happen
This is considered petty theft since the property value is below $950

— The Medical Board of California has given a psychiatrist a public reprimand after he recommended the parents of a 14-year-old boy allow their teenager to use marijuana to “ease tensions” in his home
Edward Siegel started seeing the boy in 2017 for ADHD
gave the teen medications but didn’t document the possible adverse side effects of the controlled substances
he “engaged in alternative therapies” with the boy including “mini-hypnosis” and teaching piano
The teen told Siegel he was vaping and smoking marijuana on multiple occasions and vaped in front of the doctor
the boy’s parents placed him in an intensive outpatient program for substance abuse
The same year he told the doctor he tried to kill himself two years prior
Siegel did a home visit at the teen’s villa and noted he “helped (sic) some with massage,” according to the medical board
Siegel proposed to the teen’s parents “they allow him to vape marijuana in order to ease tensions in the household
and they should consider obtaining a prescription for appropriate medicinal THC.”
did not discuss the risks of cannabis use or the potential problems of taking marijuana along with controlled substances
“It would alarm me because there are side effects
especially when they're mixed with these other drugs he was prescribed
He may not be able to learn as well,” said patient safety advocate Marion Hollingsworth
who read the medical board’s findings against the doctor
Siegel declined an on-camera interview request but claimed in an email “the accusations were proven false and were thrown out.”
Medical Board spokesman Aaron Bone said that wasn’t an accurate reflection of the case
He said the disciplinary order against Siegel remains in effect and was adopted by the board in July
Siegel agreed to which involved him waiving his right to contest the board’s charges against him,” Bone said in an email
Siegel has been ordered to take courses in record keeping and prescribing practices in addition to receiving the public reprimand
