super nice people and homemade desserts.”
Jesse Michaelson noted how “much better and different” Tony’s pizza is “from the other pizzerias nearby.”

The historic deluge dropped 10.18 inches of rain on Sound Beach
Miller Place saw 9.84 inches, while Port Jefferson Station recorded 9.83 inches and Stony Brook measured 9.55 inches. This storm’s unprecedented rain has been classified as an event that would statistically occur only once every thousand years, according to numerous reports
Hurricane Ernesto is not responsible for the torrential rain
It was part of a slow-moving summer cold front producing thunderstorms
Below are rain totals provided by the National Weather Service from across Suffolk County:

I think they got sucked out in the water."
Thursday's task was to find and rescue one submerged swimmer and perform CPR on another that was floating above the water
"The first few minutes are the most crucial to find them and resuscitate them for a successful recovery," Martin County Ocean Rescue Chief Ian Montgelas said

outside the community's shuttered post office on Friday
“This was the meeting place,” Ruberto told Newsday
Another summer of discontent has begun in the North Shore Brookhaven hamlet of Sound Beach
where the post office has not functioned since May 26
Postal Service vacated its rented outpost last year because of structural problems with the building
the building owner sued the United States of America in federal claims court for nonpayment of rent
the United States — referred to as “Defendant” throughout — stopped paying its $8,778 monthly rent in October and owes $40,775.23 plus interest and ongoing rent
The lawsuit appears to have ended any hope for a speedy return to normalcy in Sound Beach
Reactions ranged from strong annoyance from residents envisioning another year of schlepping about two miles to the Miller Place post office
to something akin to existential dismay from those who said Sound Beach’s squat brick post office had been a civic hub
“It’s such a small community — all it has is its post office and a fire department,” said Bea Ruberto
a retired textbook editor who has lived in the area 45 years and is president of the Sound Beach Civic Association
the Brookhaven Town councilwoman who represents the area
likened the post office to Floyd’s barbershop on the 1960s sitcom "The Andy Griffith Show." “It was a place where you caught up
they don’t see their neighbors like they used to.”

did not agree to an interview and did not answer emailed questions
“It is unclear when this leased facility will be reopened
as we await repairs by the landlord,” he wrote in an email
“Regular delivery service to residents continues uninterrupted.” He declined to comment on the post office lease or on the lawsuit
and its lawyer did not respond to a request for comment
Sixteen Broadway bought the 3,360-square foot post office building in 2014 for $950,000
Residents said the post office had operated out of the building since the 1980s
The company’s lawsuit — a 12-page complaint followed by 78 pages of exhibits including load-bearing equations — asserts that the government should pay its rent
because a government engineer who examined the building last June and again in September did not find the building was unsafe
did say load-bearing walls had bowed out by more than an inch and that “structural integrity” would need to be confirmed
It also described other deficiencies like rusty loading dock poles
Brookhaven Town inspectors cited Sixteen Broadway for multiple violations of property maintenance code
including the section concerning pest infestation
Bonner said the town has gotten no response from the company
more than half a dozen residents expressed frustration
In the first place: It’s “mind-boggling that the United States government doesn’t own the building,” said Beth Dimino
USPS operates 25,300 leased facilities throughout the country
… Can you imagine your police station being closed for a year
Several residents said they used to look forward to a few minutes’ walk to their post office
Nobody said they looked forward to the 15-minute drive to the Miller Place post office
Arlynne Schatzkamer-Bleier said she missed talking with USPS workers who staffed the Sound Beach post office
they knew to express concern if they had not seen someone for a couple days
they knew when there were marriages,” she said
Several residents described the USPS bureaucracy as opaque and unhelpful
In a statement emailed by a representative
we have been pushing USPS to remedy the disastrous situation at Sound Beach,” LaLota wrote
“To say USPS has been uncooperative is putting it lightly as their responses are completely unacceptable and a failure of the government.”
LaLota asked USPS to provide a mobile retail unit for temporary use outside the Sound Beach post office
with a government relations representative
3 letter to LaLota that "use of a mobile retail unit is reserved for extraordinary situations where distance to the nearest facility would pose an extreme hardship on customers."
introduced a bill to "require the Postal Service to use a mobile retail unit to provide retail postal services to an area when the post office for such area is temporarily unable to provide such services." It awaits a vote

JUPITER ISLAND — Some of the most expensive beach homes in the U.S
along Treasure Coast's southernmost barrier island
Beach houses on Jupiter Island sold for an average of $8.7 million this fall, which made it the No. 4 most-expensive oceanfront market in Florida — and also in the nation — according to a Beach-Homes.com analysis
Beach-Homes.com is the website of Beach Homes Realty
a real estate brokerage service of more than 86,000 coastal properties in 14 U.S
There are currently 31 active listings on Jupiter Island ranging from $2 million to $50 million
with a cumulative value of nearly $500 million
but they're real pretty," said Suzy Williams
a real estate agent with Beach Homes Realty
“Who wouldn’t want to live on Jupiter Island?”

The town has a permanent population of 820
with a seasonal population of nearly 2,000
It spans 1,643 acres along a slender island only a couple of hundred yards wide
bound by nine miles of shoreline to the east and west
Its multi-million-dollar beach mansions are home to the rich and famous such as golf legend Tiger Woods and former professional and college football coach Nick Saban
Grammy-winner Celine Dion once had a home on Jupiter Island as did Dorothy Bush

Why are Florida beach homes so expensive?Beach real estate is insulated from most market forces and not overly impacted by mortgage interest rates, according to the Beach-Homes.com analysis
The analysis found that because beach homes are luxury discretionary purchases
With that purchasing power also comes prudence
"They’ll wait for an average of two years and sometimes more to find the right home," said Beach Homes Realty CEO Glenn Phillips
"A lot of the rules that apply to primary real estate do not apply here."
Florida's roughly 1,350 miles of coastline is the longest in the contiguous U.S
Florida has the greatest supply of beach homes — currently 59,238 listings — but also has some of the highest demand
After the final sale price, beach homes often require high-value homeowners insurance and higher premiums for flood insurance. Hurricane-vulnerable Florida already suffers from the highest insurance premiums in the U.S., according to Newsweek

NY — There's no longer any need to guess which Long Island Sound beaches have the cleanest water
Save the Sound has released its latest weekly water quality report for the 2024 swimming season
Save the Sound announced that their seasonal water quality monitoring program started up again this year and the samples are being analyzed by their team in the John and Daria Barry Foundation Water Quality Lab in their Larchmont office
The team collected samples from sites in Westchester County
Greenwich and Queens and brought them back to the lab to test for fecal indicator bacteria
You can read more about the fecal bacteria water monitoring here
The fecal indicator bacteria concentration in water at a beach determines whether or not the water is safe for people to swim in
High fecal bacteria counts and associated pathogens in the water can make people ill and can be associated with untreated sewage or increased amounts of polluted stormwater

NY — Sixty-three beaches on Long Island are closed for swimming after the Suffolk County Health Department issued an advisory on Thursday
Because the beaches are located in parts of Long Island heavily impacted by stormwater runoff

Health officials recommend suspending bathing and contact with water in affected areas until the waters have been flushed by two successive tidal cycles in at least a 24-hour period after the rain has ended
Officials expect to open the beaches Friday
unless sampling reveals elevated levels of bacteria persisting beyond the 24-hour period

Save the Sound said that everyone can help reduce sewage pollution sources by conserving water which will lessen the wear-and-tear on the water infrastructure and reduce sewage overflows by lowering the volume of water in the system
The organization also recommends that homeowners repair sewer lines that connect their homes to municipal sewers or maintain their septic systems
Dog owners should put pet waste in the trash and never in a catch basin or on the street
