incident in a parking lot led to the altercation between the two men a spokesperson for the Vero Beach Police Department “We currently have one male detained and being held for questioning as a possible suspect,” Callahan said Vero Beach police officers responded to the incident about 6:35 p.m in the 1700 block of Ocean Drive in the South Beach Park parking lot Police spoke with witnesses and combed the area for evidence The injured man was taken by ambulance to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce Charges for the suspect were still being determined “We will know further after currently making its way through the Florida Legislature has drawn contempt from City of Miami Beach leaders who say it would threaten the area’s iconic Art Deco architecture The Legislature is considering an expansion of 2023's Live Local Act, which offered incentives for developers and eased regulations for new residential construction if they included at least 40% workforce and affordable units But from the start there had been controversy over its preemption of local ordinances — and now Miami Beach leaders say its new version could endanger the soul of the city and "transform South Beach into Manhattan." “100 years in the making of Miami Beach,” said Mayor Steven Meiner at a news conference on Tuesday “It’s why so many people walk up and down these streets.” Live Local Act already allows for new developments to be as tall as what is allowed within a one-mile radius of the site According to the city that could mean modern towers as tall as 50 stories in some locations The proposed bill would expand new definitions of zoning in a way that could open up for development a majority of the city including areas smaller apartments — many of them in the Art Deco style — that have housed long-time residents And while the version of the bill moving through the House in Tallahassee makes exceptions for historic buildings and neighborhoods — a Senate version does not READ MORE: Report reveals Florida's 'workforce' housing is unaffordable for many public sector workers would open the door to a “bulldozing” of century-old structures that drive the city’s tourist economy gentrification bill would give developers the power to tear down our two-and three story apartment buildings Art Deco and (Miami Modern) buildings,” said City of Miami Beach Commissioner Alex Fernandez “The very buildings that give Miami Beach its soul.” Critics of the Live Local Act have already found fault with its ability to provide for groups such as three and four-person families with sole income earners being average salary workers like firefighters While the House version offers protections for a historic district that is listed in the National Register of Historic Places before the year 2000 the Senate version of the expansion only protects structures that are themselves in the register Only a handful of the city’s Art Deco buildings have such self-designations according to Commissioner Kristen Rosen-Gonzalez “This new language takes away [historic district] protections“ said Fernandez “This would transform South Beach into Manhattan.” Miami Beach leaders said they are fearful that the Senate version will take precedence over what they see as the more favorable House version of the bill The proposal must be approved in both chambers with identical language before advancing to become law The bill has passed its third reading in the Senate Every Formula One race has its own identity And many circuits have their “thing” – some widely known feature you won’t find anywhere else race organizers hoped to run the track in downtown Miami an oceanside answer to Monaco’s famed layout so we’ve got a track built around the Hard Rock Stadium But building the Miami International Autodrome a dozen miles from South Beach didn’t keep race organizers from importing bits of color that offer that “Miami feel.” And so we’ve got the fake marina and vibrant aqua color reminiscent of the Dolphins “We have been very committed to, from the beginning, the brand of Miami,” Miami Grand Prix president Tyler Epp said in 2023 “We’re going to create Miami as the lens for which people are viewing the race.” Here’s what you need to know about the F1 circuit built around an NFL stadium in the Sunshine State Miami’s temporary track was selected from more than 30 proposed layouts but received mixed reviews during its inaugural season in 2022 and some were unimpressed by various points The circuit has the same layout as previous seasons with just a few tweaks here and there in 2024 that included a much-needed resurfacing Here are a few key points that fans should keep an eye on Daniel Ricciardo described this chicane as “a little too Mickey Mouse” in 2022 which tells you all you need to know about it It’s slow and narrow as the cars file under the turnpike (Regulations put a speed limit around overhead features which is why the chicane exists.) Last year Max Verstappen struck a bollard in this section drivers face another prime overtaking spot with the tight left-hander of Turn 17 which is right near the Dolphins’ practice fields It’s key to remember that there were only 45 overtakes throughout the 2022 Miami Grand Prix and 41 in 2024 This is a braking zone before hitting the accelerator into Turn 12 The left-hander is poised to be a good overtaking spot and a potential litmus test for one issue sucking up oxygen ahead of this race: just how possible it is to pass This sequence is right in front of the MIA Marina (aka faux marina who describes himself as “the type of guy to like Miami,” said he enjoyed the fast nature of this sequence But this portion came into the spotlight in 2022 when Gasly and Lando Norris collided as the Frenchman went around the outside of the McLaren during Turn 8 It ended both of their races as Norris spun and Gasly retired a few laps later The track was resurfaced after drivers slammed it in 2022 for offering poor grip and even breaking up at points Former Red Bull driver Sergio Pérez called the surface “a joke,” and Fernando Alonso derided it as “not F1 standard.” Epp said they “really leaned on our partners at Tilke to make sure that we’re doing this properly.” the faux marina now features a couple of pools with actual water The track also featured a rumble strip on the left for Turn 14 and the apex of Turn 15 was a bit elongated both of which should help drivers navigate the section especially given the low number of overtakes during the 2022 race “I think all of us didn’t really understand why they’ve been shortened None of us were consulted about it or asked our opinion on it and I think the race speaks for itself in Baku,” Mercedes’ George Russell said in 2023 and it’s always exciting when you’ve got these big DRS advantages “I think with the cars that we have at the moment it’s still quite difficult to follow,” he said (Track video courtesy of EA Sports F1 — learn more about “F1 25″ here.) play a major role at almost all of the Festival’s 105+ events which take place on South Beach and across many major South Florida cities including Miami’s Coconut Grove and Coral Gables The students do everything from assisting event managers providing logistics and operational support as well as culinary support greeting the more than 65,000 guests who attend and assisting on the FIU Green Team to rescue food and educate guests about the Festival's sustainability efforts (which have diverted more than 40 tons of waste from going into landfills over the past few years) Hospitality graduate student Candela Gonzalez has been participating in the Festival for the past four years.  “It’s been an incredible experience," she said "This is my second year on the FIU Green Team and I really love it because it’s so much fun but also very rewarding because of the education [on sustainability and recyclable materials] we’re providing to guests and the waste that is diverted from landfills.” Even culinary personalities like Rachael Ray have been beaming with enthusiasm over FIU students. She recently wrote an opinion piece for the Miami Herald praising the students whom she has been working with for years.  “FIU students are the lifeblood of the festival gaining hands-on experience in everything from event planning to kitchen management They don’t just witness the magic; they help create it. This real-world learning transform lives,” wrote Ray in the piece Ray mentioned the success story of Andrew Kaplan an FIU hospitality alumnus who volunteered at the Festival as a student was impressed by his work ethic and eventually hired him as part of her team Kaplan is the executive vice president of culinary operations for Ray's brand and director of its cooking and kids philanthropy.  It’s these kinds of potential networking opportunities interactions and experiences that bring students back for more every year students participating in the Festival were among the first ones to interact with new FIU Interim President Jeanette Nunez For hospitality graduate student Samantha Wagner She’s been participating in the Festival for the past six years both she and her brother Max Wagner are team leads It's also a bittersweet experience because it’s her last before she graduates from FIU “The hands-on learning is really unique," Wagner says It allows students to go beyond classroom discussions and learn by doing Hospitality graduate students Samantha Wagner (left) and Monique Decembert (right) taking part in media interviews More than $40 million has been raised to date for FIU's Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management which is scheduled to take place February 19-22 Receive daily FIU stories and updates directly to your inbox TrendingDevelopmentSouth FloridaAMichael Stern’s JDS scores upzoning approval to build South Beach condo towerDeveloper plans to acquire Bikini Hostel property as part of public benefits Michael Stern with a rendering of 1250 West Avenue (Getty Listen to this article00:001xThe Miami Beach commission granted Michael Stern’s JDS Development Group and Gianluca Vacchi’s GV Development Group initial approvals on an upzoning for a planned luxury condo tower in South Beach Commissioners unanimously passed on first reading zoning amendments that will allow the developer to build a taller and slimmer tower on the site at 1250 West Avenue The project now calls for a building of up to 330 feet The project will mark a reduction in density Stern’s attorney Melissa Tapanes Llahues said The JDS-led venture is seeking a 5.75 floor area ratio Residents spoke in favor and against the proposed height increase Kobi Karp Architecture & Interior Design designed plans for the project which would include ground-floor commercial space SIGN UPA JDS affiliate has been closing on units at the 15-story Bay Garden Manor condo building which was built in 1964 on the 1.9-acre site JDS is expected to close on the remainder of units within the next few weeks The new project would rise on that waterfront property the JDS-led venture is in contract to acquire the Bikini Hostel property across the street at 1247 West Avenue and redevelop the site into a park for the city as part of a public benefits package It’s not publicly known how much the developer is spending for the Bikini Hostel has been housing former Camillus House residents after the city of Miami Stern said at the meeting that it was his understanding the Muskats were in the process of buying a building in the city of Miami via a 1031 exchange where the homeless residents would be moved The unanimous first reading vote for Stern and Vacchi’s project came more than a month after the city’s planning board voted four-to-three against recommending the zoning amendments to the commission with concerns the project was “out of scale.”  Wednesday’s commission meeting became heated at various points during the discussion on the 1250 West Avenue project, as well as hours before when commissioners debated a similar upzoning for the Deauville Beach Resort site at 6701 Collins Avenue. The commission approved settlement and development agreements with the Deauville’s owners the Meruelo family and David Martin’s Terra United StatesChevron FloridaChevron MiamiChevron For a clean, quiet, and relatively affordable stay in the heart of South Beach With a nearly empty lobby bar and small rooftop pool, you won’t find many spring breakers or rowdy party-goers here the Hyatt Centric South Beach is better suited for business travelers or those looking for a quiet place to rest their head after a day at the beach or before a cruise The hotel initially opened in 2015 but recently completed renovations of the lobby and guest rooms in 2024 uncluttered design makes the spaces feel brand-new The rooms and bathrooms are spacious and clean, and the beds are comfortable. I appreciated the room’s warm touches and neutral tones; I have always found Miami’s affinity for bright white walls and marble slightly jarring the walls are thin and the heavier-than-normal doors loudly slam shut behind you meaning you can hear your neighbors come and go—a disturbance frequent enough to wake light sleepers The floor-to-ceiling windows allow for plenty of natural light Hyatt Globalist members receive complimentary breakfast I recommend making your lunch and dinner reservations elsewhere—options abound Joe & The Juice is located downstairs and there’s a Playa Bowls across the street two convenient options for when you want something healthy and on-the-go Walk two blocks to Cortadito for the eponymous Cuban coffee or a great café con leche There is no onsite spa or gym, however guests have access to the Sea Spa and fitness center owned by the Lowes Hotel across the street. If you prefer to work out in the early morning or evening, know that hours are limited (10 a.m. to 6 p.m.). The prime location is the main reason I would stay at this hotel again. You’re directly across the street from the beach and Ocean Drive, and walking distance from the South Beach conference center if you’re visiting on business. But compared to the beachfront hotels with lively pools and bars across the street, you’re still able to retreat to relative quiet. For the price, it's a great home base to explore Miami and get some salt and sun. The front desk and housekeeping staff are all very friendly and accommodating. The servers and bartenders are short-staffed, so expect a wait for cocktails and food ordered by the pool. I didn’t encounter any young families during my stay, but I don’t think this would be a bad option for traveling with children if you’re looking for a well-positioned launch pad and don’t mind the lack of resort amenities. The hotel uses disposable plastic water bottles; there were no refilling stations for my reusable bottle. All hotel areas have accessible routes from the ramp-accessible front public entrance. The lobby, restaurant, bar, and pool are all located on the third floor, accessible via elevators. There is a daily resort fee of $40. To get your money's worth, know that this includes beach access with two beach chairs and towels (provided by Lowes); sunrise and sunset yoga classes on 3rd Street and Ocean Drive; daily 10% off beverages at the bar; 10% off Spa services; and use of complimentary bicycles.
