Mays spent 16 seasons with the Black Eagles program, including nine as head coach. His 2020 team won the Class AAA state championship in the COVID-19 season. Mays was the offensive coordinator for the late John Messinger when South Charleston won back-to-back AAA titles in 2008 and 2009. As the head coach, he led the Black Eagles to a runner-up finish in 2014. Mays, a former Herbert Hoover player and assistant, amassed 55 wins as South Charleston’s head coach from 2013-2021 with six playoff appearances. The past three seasons at Hurricane, Mays’ teams went 27-10. His 2022 team made it to the semifinals of the Class AAA playoffs. WATCHSouth Charleston head football coach steps down after two seasonsby STAFF REPORTS South Charleston football is once again looking for a new head coach. (WCHS) SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WCHS) — South Charleston football is once again looking for a new head coach. Dustin Resler announced his decision to step down as head coach on Monday after two seasons in charge. The former head coach cited a “constantly shifting” foundation for his reason to remove himself from the role, but praised his team and program. “To my players - you are the reason I took this job, and you are the reason I gave everything I had to it,” Resler said in a statement on social media. “When I became your coach, the program was in a tough spot. The roster was young, the competition was experienced, and the challenges were real. But you never backed down. You showed up, you put in the work, and you fought through adversity with heart and resilience. “I know some people will look at wins and losses, but I look at the growth I’ve seen in each of you,” he continued. “I saw freshmen and sophomores step onto the field against older, more experienced teams and refuse to quit. I saw a group of young men who learned from every challenge and came back stronger each time. I saw a team that stood together, played with pride, and built something bigger than just football.” South Charleston went winless in two seasons under Resler. The Black Eagles have gone 1-29 in three seasons since Donnie Mays’ exit from the program. Resler said that despite difficulties, he saw growth within the program, but cited outside factors as a reason for his departure. “No, the wins didn’t come overnight. That’s the reality of a true rebuild. But progress was happening- penalties were down, game scores improved, and for the first time in years, players chose to stay,” he said. “That’s a foundation for success, and it’s something that no one can take away from you. “But for a program to succeed, it takes more than just effort from the players and coaches - it takes stability , trust, and support from school leadership,” he continued. “Unfortunately, that hasn’t been the case, and I’ve come to the realization that I can no longer continue in this role. As much as I love coaching this team, I refuse to lead a program where the foundation is constantly shifting.” The new hire will mark the fourth head coach the team has had since 2021.
