Ohio — A McDonald's on Mayfield Road decided to close its dining room during afternoons after South Euclid Police responded to chaos in late October
I haven't investigated this type of call or been dispatched to this type of call in 18 years," said South Euclid Police Public Information Officer and School Resource Officer Officer Joe Di Lillo
officers found two teenagers hurt inside the restaurant and asked them what happened
Employees recounted a fight that took them from their tasks
officers learned that many teenagers left the restaurant
some even causing disturbances in other Mayfield Road businesses
the dining room at the fast-food restaurant is closed from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m
but you have to be in a car in the drive-thru to pick up the food
South Euclid Police said it is grateful for its residents who helped identify many of the teenagers involved
"the public did not appreciate this kind of behavior
The community worked with the police department
and got us the information to attach to this report to go down to juvenile court," Di Lillo said
Officers report the juveniles involved were in the age range of 12 to 16
two from South Euclid and two from Cleveland
Twelve named juveniles have now been passed along to the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Prosecutor for review for charges
Some teens involved attend Brush High School

The Fall festival has been a regular tradition in the city since 2016
evolving from different Fall events into one large family-friendly day filled with music
“We started with an event called Pumpkins in the Park in 2016, where we set up a temporary pumpkin patch with donations from Giant Eagle,” Subwick explains
we combined it with our Harvest Fest to create October Feast
The South Euclid Giant Eagle continues to provide pumpkins, as does the South Euclid Marc’s
with each family getting one pumpkin (while supplies last)
"They're great community partners," Subwick notes
will play a little bit of everything—from all styles of polkas and waltzes to standards and Big Band
The Perfect Choice Band
regarded as one of Northeast Ohio’s top wedding bands
Subwick promises there are plenty of activities to choose from
each one with a $250 cash prize for the winner: A Dog Costume Contest
a Human Costume Contest and a Stein Holding Contest
“With the dog costumes, it's really fun because I think those are some of the funniest costumes that are out there,” Subwick says. For the humans, he says people can enter as individuals or with a group costume. “Last year, the family that won [went as] ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ and it was absolutely incredible costume.”
“The Stein Holding Contest is particularly challenging—most people don't last more than a minute,” Subwick warns
“These contests are a lot of fun and very popular.”
Indie Green Market is coordinating local vendors who will offer fall shopping, and Franks and Shakes and The Pierogi Lady food trucks are planning to serve their specialties
A highlight of this year's October Feast will be the grand opening of the Bexley Park's concession stand. The city went on a search this past spring for the right operator who could serve healthy food options in the 500-square-foot concession stand within South Euclid’s largest park
South Euclid officials fell in love with Chef Tynisa Acoff, aka “Chef T,” owner and head chef of Food with Purpose
Even though the concession stand is now closed for the season
Chef T says she will be previewing a limited menu of her most popular and kid-friendly dishes
Food With Purpose“The first meal is going to be probably my best selling dish
which is garlic butter salmon bites with zucchini noodles,” she says
“We're also going to have a sweet potato noodle stir fry
which has been a really big dish and really widely accepted.”
Other options include FWP eggrolls and dark chocolate covered stuffed dates
Chef T will offer her Snactivity Pack—a turkey hotdog
“We're going to have a myriad of things from healthy snacks that are super kid friendly,” she says
“These are snacks that I feed my own children.”
Acoff started Food with Purpose in 2021 after her father was diagnosed with kidney failure
“I created meals based on foods naturally good for kidney maintenance,” she explains
his doctor started seeing improvement in his kidneys.”
Subwick says he is extremely pleased with the city’s choice for the new concession stand operator
“We're excited for Chef T to have her grand opening
previewing what's to come in 2025,” he says
“It's been a great experience working with her to bring healthy
tasty food options to our concession stand.”
Subwick and Chef T are just busy watching the weather reports for Saturday
we typically see 700 to 1000 people for the event,” says Subwick
“It's a great way for small businesses like Chef T’s to test the waters and prepare for future operations.”
The event is held rain or shine and is free and open to the public
Ohio — Police and cyber experts warn of scams as the holiday season nears
Online scammers are targeting people all over Northeast Ohio
One South Euclid woman got scammed out of $23,000
it all started with an e-mail from Discover Card
The e-mail informed the 76-year-old woman that her social security number was on the dark web
The victim told investigators she Googled "Lifelock," with whom she had an account
She selected the first entry on the Google search
which provided her with a customer service number
there's something called Search Engine poisoning," said Cyber expert Alex Hamerstone."If you look at how search engines work
"But criminals know that they can also purchase those ads
Hamerstone said it's hard to know which link is correct
but he advises people to always look at the website that the link connects with
"Either by hovering over the link before you click it or looking at what opens in your browser
just because companies will use multiple domains or multiple website names so they can kind of track where somebody came from," said Hamerstone
it's really easy to come up with fake website names that look authentic
either by replacing a zero in the name with a one with a with the letter "O" or vice versa
Hamerstone says scammers are also able to purchase a domain name that is similar to a well-known or large company
then use that to host a fake website with a fake number you can dial
"Then they'll report to be a customer service rep from there and ask you for information," said Hamerstone
It was used to send the victim to a fake "Lifelock" webpage and a fake customer representative
who told the victim there was a request made on the dark web to transfer $23,000 from her bank account
She was eventually transferred to what she thought was a fraud expert at Flagstar Bank
She could place the money in a Crypto account
or she could turn it over to an "undercover FBI agent."
“If somebody asks you ever to physically take out money
He also mentioned that crypto is another red flag
The victim told police she withdrew the money from three banks and then met a man who claimed to be an "FBI agent" in the parking lot of a Starbucks on Mayfield Road
She gave him a security code and handed him an Amazon box containing the $23,000
The victim said she was supposed to get an email the next day with information on her new account containing her money
“This is a kind of a whole other level of scam," said Hamerstone
"Once you start getting to the point where you're meeting the scammer in person
That's a whole different type of crime....this is much more extensive than we usually see.”
Hamerstone says there is also a difference between a scam and a fraud
which could determine whether the bank will cover your loss
if you're trying to take my money and you guess my password and break into my bank account and transfer the money to yourself
And I'm generally not liable," said Hamerstone
"If you call me and trick me in whatever way you trick me
and I'm the one that presses the button to send that money
According to the South Euclid Police report
but because she willingly withdrew the money herself
the bank may not have to cover the loss— leaving her without the money
South Euclid police warn residents that if they are ever asked to withdraw a large sum of money

Ohio — Attached to the City of South Euclid City Council’s Tuesday night meeting is a memo saying the state has not said when or how adult-use cannabis tax revenue will be distributed
Recreational marijuana hit the shelves of authorized dispensaries in August
Since then, adult-use cannabis sales have skyrocketed – collecting more than $155 million as of November 12
Amid state and local taxes imposed on marijuana
there is an additional 10% tax levied on purchases solely because it’s recreational
There are more than 100 marijuana dispensaries licensed to sell adult use in Ohio
South Euclid is only home to one: Certified Dispensary on Cedar Road
“It's our understanding that we will receive approximately 10% of the sales from that dispensary
but we have not heard from the state about their plan to distribute the funds yet,” The City of South Euclid Director of Community Services
South Euclid’s Finance Director estimates the city has made an extra $100,000 from adult-use cannabis this year
“It will go to public services and public safety,” Benjamin stated
and other services continue to rise every year
It's always good when we can raise some additional funds and have some additional revenue.”
Benjamin called that $100,000 estimation the best guess as the city works to finalize its 2025 revenue budget in the next few weeks
It's also new to the state of Ohio as well
It's the first time we've all gone through this
I think we all expect some bumps in the road as we move forward and implement something new
I think we'll be okay for 2025 for the short term
it would be nice to know exactly how the process is going to work,” Benjamin explained
Benjamin said city council is hopeful it will know the number of recreational marijuana sales the Certified Dispensary has made this year soon so it can be prepared for the finalization of the budget
I reached out to the Ohio Department of Taxation as well as the Ohio Department of Budget and Management for more information

The City of South Euclid is experiencing a residential construction renaissance
with five major housing developments in the works totaling 128 new units
This building boom in the built-out Cleveland suburb is being driven by strong demand for new housing and creative development approaches
With a population of more than 21,000 people
the residents and South Euclid city officials take pride in having a diverse city with plenty of greenspace
As the city has recently increased South Euclid’s amenities
officials realized the growing suburb on Cleveland’s east side was also in need of some new residential options
“The hope is to diversify our housing stock,” explains Michael Love
South Euclid director of planning and development
“South Euclid is very much a bedroom community of single family homes—many of them built in the era of 1945 to 1960
We’re trying to diversify the type of homes.”
Love says five new housing development projects will not only add single family homes
they will also bring townhomes and custom homes built as infill projects
“These projects will bring a whole new audience into the city with single family new construction homes and townhomes for homebuyers who may not be currently looking at South Euclid,” he says
“We see a lot of young professionals and empty nesters looking at the townhomes and
new families who are looking at the single family homes and want that new construction.”
The largest project underway is Lowden Place
located on just under six acres of land on the former Lowden Elementary School site
17 new homes are now under construction in the north side of the city on Greenvale Drive
between South Green Road and South Belvoir Boulevard
Lowden Elementary closed in 2007 and was demolished shortly after the closure. After nearly 15 years of marketing the land to potential buyers, South Euclid Lyndhurst City Schools was able to sell the property to Sommers Development
which divided the property into 17 oversized lots
“The homes match the existing housing stock on Lowden and Greenvale
so they will sit at the same street setback,” explains Love
the [parcels] have large back yards—the average yard site is one-half to three-quarters of an acre
which is very unique for that neighborhood.”
Sommers prepared the lots for development last year and then turned the land over to Ryan Homes for construction
and the remaining 15 homes under construction sold out after just two weeks on the market in February—selling for between $275,000 and $425,000
There are six floor plans to choose from—ranging from 1,366 square feet to 2,203 square feet— and all of the homes feature fully furnished kitchens
In addition to the new homes under construction in Lowden Place
Love says the city sold nine vacant lots on Greenvale Drive to Sommers Development
which then turned the land over to Ryan Homes for construction
Additionally, Summers bought seven additional lots through the CDC One South Euclid's Build Grow Thrive program to have Ryan Homes build seven more homes scattered throughout the Lowden/Greenvale/Princeton neighborhood
"Build Grow Thrive is a program where we're able to in collaboration with one South Euclid where we are able to sell land directly to a purchaser for infill development—construction in between existing homes on land,” says Ashley Holloway
South Euclid assistant director of planning and development
“What was once previously developed land is able to be developed right
We have a good amount of infill lots available.”
Holloway says the city gets weekly calls about proposed developing infill lots
“It can streamline the purchasing process for the infill development,” he says
“The purchaser works directly with One South Euclid to purchase the land.”
South Euclid demolished dilapidated homes on the lots and Ryan Homes took over these lots
All nine lots sold within two weeks of the lots being publicly marketed
“This is the first time in the history of Ryan Homes they've ever done infill development,” Love notes
“The Build Grow Thrive program helped facilitate these urban infill projects on small
On Monday, July 8, South Euclid City Council approved three new development projects—St
and an extension project in Queen Ann Court
Construction on these projects is expected to begin this summer
All three developments were approved as Planned Unit Residential Developments (PURDs) that come a variety of conditions the developers must follow as they construct the developments. Two of the most transformative developments are proposed for sites across Mayfield Road from each other near St. John Lutheran Church on Mayfield Road
John Woods project will have 41 townhomes on six acres behind the church
John Meadows with have 24 townhomes and two single-family homes on the site of an incomplete development that was started before the 2008 housing crisis
The townhome developments will have a private street serving the development
Sommers will create the private street and provide site infrastructure work before turning the project over to Ryan to construct the townhome units
Ryan has in house architects who will be responsible for the home designs
The townhomes in both developments will start at $250,000 and go into the mid-$300,000 range
based on the style and the level of interior customization chosen by the buyer
There will be an HOA responsible for the maintenance of all common property and all landscaping
John Woods will feature a common area green space that will serve as a community gathering space for the residents
The Queen Ann Court project would extend the street that runs off of King George Boulevard
It will be the first project to get underway with City Council’s approval this week
was the street was supposed to go straight through to Trebisky to match Queen Mary
which is the next street over,” explains Love
you can tell that it's an unfinished street just based on the layout.”
Love says Queen Ann will still end in a cul-de-sac because it won’t go all the way through to Trebisky
which currently sit on more than a half-acre of land
with a portion of their backyards will be split to create the land for the Queen Ann Court expansion
The new Queen Ann homes will match the existing homes and the street would become city property
Because there will be some stormwater management necessary
Love says an HOA will be created to maintain the homes
which will have a starting price of $300,000
The final development in the works is a two-acre site at Monarch Road and Montagano Boulevard, where builder Al Steplight of Highland Heights-based Gorgeous Homes by Steplight plans to construct nine single-family houses

Ohio — The City of South Euclid has listed dozens of addresses as owing $54,658.18 for lawn care maintenance
but some of those homeowners on that list claim they never received such a service from the city and now want answers
In the City of South Euclid's City Council meeting agenda from July 22
an ordinance "assessing unpaid costs of nuisance abatement (high grass
"There's a 72-hour notice we give any owners out of compliance with 6 inches or more [of high grass]
we send out our private contractor to cut the grass," stated City of South Euclid Housing Manager TJ Murray
One South Euclid address is listed as owing as much as $1,012.32
Since I suffered a heart attack and a stroke
I'm not able to maintain it myself so I pay someone to maintain my grass."
Betts said the lawn care specialist he hired also takes care of many of his neighbors
so I don't know what the City of South Euclid is talking about," said Betts
Betts claims neither his wife nor has he seen a city employee tend to his yard or had a city employee knock on his door about his property
News 5 knocked on a handful of doors after speaking with Betts to see if anyone else may be in the same boat of confusion as him
Matthew McAllister lives a few streets over
His address was also on the city's list for owing money for lawn care service
"[The City of South Euclid] put something on my front door [about a month ago] because my weeds were a little bit too long and they said I had 72 hours to take care of it," said McAllister
He said $60 for taking care of the front yard and backyard is a fair price
but he'd rather take care of the problem on his own
McAllister told News 5 that he trimmed his property's weeds within 24 hours and assumed the situation was taken care of because he didn't hear from South Euclid after that
He said he only found out he was reportedly in debt to the city after hearing from News 5
"I don't think it's fair because I did take care of it in the timeframe they gave me."
Murray said there are a few options on when those listed as owing money for lawn care services can pay
Both McAllister and Betts want answers before stroking a check
New 5 followed up with the City of South Euclid on Thursday
but city hall had already closed for the day
The City of South Euclid updated News 5 with the following Friday morning
Betts rents the property and is not the owner
All abatements go to the owner of the property and not the renter
it is also my understanding that the tenant in his lease agreement is responsible for maintaining the landscaping and the city not only had to cut the lawn
but also abate the overgrown bushes on his property
There appears to be a dispute between the renter and the landlord as to who is responsible for the maintenance of the property and paying for the subject abatement," stated the City of South Euclid Director of Community Services and Development
The City of South Euclid attached photos showing overgrown grass along the front of Betts's home as well as in the driveway
But Betts told News 5 he has only lived at his current residence for less than a year
The City of South Euclid sent News 5 reports for McAllister's address
McAllister has been cited numerous times for tall grass and weeds
