Officers found a man lying next to a black Dodge Charger Sedan it was learned that the man was shot at the Shell gas station at 3580 Cascade Rd police said detectives believe three men who exited a gray Audi came up to the victim while “he was pumping gas.” The suspects opened fire hitting the man several times before driving away the man was able to drive himself to the nearby Publix plaza He was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in critical condition South Fulton’s Criminal Investigations Division and Crime Scene Investigators are investigating the shooting Anyone with information on the person near the Budgetel Inn and Suites at 4120 Fulton Industrial Boulevard A South Fulton police officer responded to the scene to assist That’s when the suspect was stopped for allegedly jaywalking and opened fire resulting in injuries to both a Fulton County police officer and a South Fulton police officer The suspect was fatally wounded during the incident,” the South Fulton Police Department said in a statement Friday afternoon the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) identified the suspect as 29-year-old Rashan Jarvis Cofield of Atlanta officers discovered Cofield had an active warrant for his arrest while they were checking his identity “As officers attempted to take the man into custody he reached into his pocket and ignored officers’ commands,” the GBI said “The man then pulled a pistol from his pocket and began to run while firing at the officers.” The GBI said one officer was hit and collapsed The second officer pursued Cofield and returned fire “The suspect had a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead on the scene,” the GBI said The agency said Cofield’s body was taken to the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy Cofield had been booked on multiple assault and battery charges in recent years Records show he was arrested for simple assault and battery in 2018 South Fulton Police Chief Keith Meadows identified his officer as Lt who has been with the department since its inception He said he was shot three times and is in critical condition police said Cook is out of surgery and is recovering in the ICU Fulton County police identified their officer as Officer Zahir Muid who joined the department in December 2024 A department spokesperson said Muid had been released from Grady Memorial Hospital after being treated The spokesperson said Muid “administered life-saving aid to Lt Cook,” who also previously served with Fulton County police before joining the South Fulton Police Department Both police chiefs gave credit to Muid for likely saving Cook’s life by using a tourniquet Fulton County Police Chief Wade said Muid chased the suspect into the motel parking lot after Lt But police are still investigating who fired the shots that killed Cofield told Atlanta News First he saw the suspect ultimately take his own life I went to the window to see what was going on and all I saw was the dude running into the hotel,” Johnson said Freestanding Emergency Room is the latest collaboration in Fulton County’s longstanding relationship with Grady which dates back for more than a century.  Fulton County will contribute approximately $19.2 million in debt service payments for this project The new freestanding Emergency Center responds to a need for improved healthcare access in South Fulton.  In 2022 two hospitals in Fulton County closed their doors – one in Atlanta and one in East Point Fulton County collaborated with Morehouse School of Medicine and Ernst & Young to conduct the “Project Care” study which examined the impact of gaps in healthcare access for Fulton County residents This study confirmed the existence of a significant “healthcare desert” in South Fulton and a life expectancy difference of 7 years between residents in South Fulton and those in North Fulton.  Following that study Fulton County engaged Grady leadership in addressing the issue “We learned that the lack of accessible emergency care in South Fulton is literally costing people their lives.  I applaud Grady’s leadership for listening and I applaud them even more for taking real action Residents in South Fulton need this and they deserve it.” The new freestanding emergency room will open in Fall 2026 The 40-acre parcel provides the opportunity for future expansion to potentially include additional healthcare services.   Share card to make unauthorized purchases spending approximately $26,000 without the city's approval Member of council Helen Willis told FOX 5 Atlanta that Mayor Khalid even used the card to fund trips overseas The mayor called those trips international-trade missions Willis says that contradicts the city’s economic-development plan.  "That plan does not have anything in it that recommends we should undergoes review During Tuesday night’s city council meeting officials decided that Mayor Khalid must turn over  his city-owned devices He cannot use the city’s electric vehicle The city is removing a pool table from his office And he cannot access city hall or his office "We needed to take these drastic actions," said South Fulton City Member of council Helen Willis Willis says the mayor violated public trust he usurped the city manager’s authority three Mac devices purchased for the mayor will be redistributed and the locks on the mayoral suite will be changed Kamau's access to all city buildings and facilities has been revoked The City Manager was also directed to draft a memorandum to all employees effective immediately to cease and desist all interaction with the mayor Any employee who violates the directive will be subject to immediate disciplinary action they reached a consensus that the mayor "has engaged in the unauthorized use of resources and engaged in conduct unbecoming to a member which constitutes a breach of public trust." The council stated that these actions will remain in effect until all city investigations are complete The South Fulton City Council issued the following statement: The City of South Fulton City Council has taken action following concerns about the Mayor’s unauthorized use of city resources refusal to follow policies and conduct unbecoming of a public official the Mayor’s access to the city budget—excluding salary and benefits—and all city buildings and access to the city-owned electric vehicle has been revoked the Council has ordered the reassignment or return of unauthorized equipment and secured the mayoral suite to ensure accountability The City Council has ordered that staff and employee communication with the mayor be restricted pursuant to the City Charter These temporary measures will remain in place where feasible until all city investigations are complete The Council remains committed to responsible governance and safeguarding taxpayer resources According to the mayor's bio on the city's website Mayor Khalid Kamau is a community activist and labor organizer who became the first #BlackLivesMatter organizer elected to public office he helped organize MARTA transit workers and led the Atlanta chapter of Black Lives Matter Elected to South Fulton City Council in 2017 Kamau championed policies focused on economic justice His key achievements include creating a $1 million Pedestrian Safety Fund and passing legislation to make Juneteenth a paid city holiday He also supported efforts to raise the minimum wage to $15 A self-described "Elected Activist" he sought to transform South Fulton—America’s Blackest Big City—into a national model for economic and restorative justice the mayor has been in the spotlight for several reasons In April 2023, South Fulton police shut down an egg hunt put on by the mayor because he didn't have the proper permit.  In July 2023, Mayor Khalid was arrested for felony burglary and trespassing after being discovered in a house on a property off Cascade Palmetto Highway In December 2023, the mayor closed his office on a Monday to stand with Palestine The city council said at the time that he did not have the authority to close his office when the city was open for business.  In October 2024, Mayor Khalid proposed increasing his salary from $47,000 to $85,000 In addition to the issue with the purchase card, there has also been debate on whether the mayor's dog should be allowed in City Hall.  FOX 5 called and texted the mayor numerous times, asking to speak with him and is awaiting a response. In the meantime, the mayor still collects his paychecks and benefits. The move to restrict the mayor’s power is temporary, pending the outcome of investigations into his spending and actions in office.
