After what could be a mistake by the officials on down and distance
South Gate decides to retreat into its own endzone for a safety with a three-point lead and eight seconds left
But the South Gate quarterback steps out of bounds with one second left
South Gate elects to kick the ball off the ground (not punt it) from their own 20-yard line but the ball goes straight out of bounds and doesn't go further than 10 yards
which results in the ball being awarded to Chatsworth on the South Gate 15-yard line
Chatsworth kicks the game-winning field goal with no time left to win 38-36 and win the Division II City championship

The ensuing free kick from the 20-yard line was made off the ground, not on a tee, and the ball caromed laterally out of bounds without touching a player, resulting in a five-yard penalty. No time went off the clock and the Chancellors were awarded the ball at the 15, setting up the winning field goal.
“I didn’t think I’d get a chance to kick it there, but I was ready for the moment,” said Velazquez, who had made one field goal all season, in a league game against Granada Hills. “I’m always composed. Confidence is key. I knew it was good right away … it came off my foot perfectly.”
Velazquez was given the game ball and did not let go of it through the trophy presentation.
Sophomore Eric Myers carried 20 times for 143 yards, including a 17-yard run to cap the Rams’ first touchdown drive and a two-yard run to end an eight-play, 76-yard march that gave South Gate a 36-33 lead with 5:51 remaining.
Leon rushed for 141 yards and a touchdown for the third-seeded Chancellors (9-5), who lost to Fairfax in overtime last year in the Division II final at Valley College.
It was Chatsworth’s third section title and its first since claiming the Division II title in 1998.
South Gate (7-7) was seeking its first City title since 1988 when it won the 3A crown.

SOUTH GATE — A South Gate man with a work history at dozens of schools and child-care centers pleaded not guilty Wednesday to charges that he sexually abused two boys who were between the ages of 4 and 9
is charged with seven counts of lewd act on a child under age 14
two counts of oral copulation with a child 10 years or younger and one count each of sodomy with a child 10 years old or younger and possession of more than 600 images of child or youth pornography
according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office
The crimes allegedly occurred in Los Angeles County between November 2015 and this year
and investigators are searching for other potential alleged victims
according to the District Attorney's Office
"The abhorrent nature of these crimes against children and the defendant's employment in schools and childcare settings is of tremendous concern
and we are asking for anyone who may have additional information to come forward," District Attorney George Gascón said in a statement last week announcing the charges
and the courage to come forward can ensure justice for those who have been harmed."
Investigators are reaching out to dozens of schools and child care centers where Sandoval worked to verify the scope and duration of his duties at those facilities
and the list of names of schools and child-care facilities will be shared with the public after it is verified
is shocking to its core and we will continue to unearth the leads that detectives have unveiled during the course of this investigation
We will not rest until all leads have been exhausted," South Gate Police Chief Darren Arakawa said in the statement
Sandoval was arrested July 25 by South Gate police and has remained behind bars since then in lieu of just over $7 million bail
He could face a maximum potential sentence of life in prison if convicted as charged
Authorities asked any other potential alleged victims or anyone with information to call the South Gate Police Department's tip line at 323-563-5436

the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission closed an intervention period in the federal docket for the proposed Southgate pipeline project
is seeking approval to dramatically alter its original 2018 design

Although community members asked for more time for review
only a 21-day intervention period was offered

MVP received a three-year extension to its FERC certificate for Southgate
but the new design includes changing the route to 31 miles

First announced in 2018 and granted its original Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity by FERC in 2020

has been plagued with problems from the beginning
Construction never began as the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality twice denied MVP Southgate a crucial water quality permit and the Virginia Air Pollution Control Board denied a critical air permit for Southgate’s proposed Lambert Compressor Station in Virginia in 2021
due to environmental justice concerns.

Sarasota is officially losing a department store giant
Macy’s reported it would close roughly 65 stores by the end of the fiscal year
though it remained tight-lipped about specific locations until Thursday’s announcement
The closures are part of the company’s plan to invest in its remaining 350 stores and “return the company to sustainable
profitable sales growth” after years of struggling
but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy
we are closing underproductive Macy’s stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go–forward stores
where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service,” Tony Spring
Macy’s has not released dates for the closure
though it said clearance sales for closing locations will begin this month and run 8 to 12 weeks on its Store Closures FAQ page
These are the Florida Macy’s stores confirmed to close this year:
is the third to close in Sarasota in a decade
The Macy’s at Desoto Square Mall closed in 2014
and the Macy’s at Sarasota Square Mall closed in 2017
Benderson Development purchased The Crossings
Benderson owns an adjacent lot with an Aldi and a former Dillard’s store
The Sarasota County Commission approved a zoning change that will allow Benderson to build a mixed-use development on the property this past fall
The development proposes 848 residential units — 85 of them designated as attainable housing — and commercial space
though the company has yet to submit an official site plan
What's next for other tenants at The Crossings?Doris Volk has been a fixture at the mall for 22 years
with her The Orchid Lady kiosk for 12 years before moving into a storefront about a decade ago
she's not going anywhere while the mall still has space for her
Benderson Development received approval last year to redevelop the mall into a mixed-use project
Volk said her lease runs through the end of the year with the building's owner not indicating the redevelopment project is imminent
More: Sarasota County expects another $210 million in federal hurricane recovery funds
Volk views the large parking lot on the property combined with the mall's security as providing a safe and convenient place for Sarasota shoppers
with Volk's business supplying people with plants from as far south as Boca Grande and as far north as Parrish

Authorities are on the scene of a possible house explosion in Southgate

(Missoula Current) With backing from area neighbors
economic leaders and the development community
the Missoula City Council on Monday night gave final approval to acquire a Midtown parcel for redevelopment into a new neighborhood
The vote finalizes a year's long effort to secure the 13-acre property located near Southgate Mall
The Missoula Redevelopment Agency will complete the $5.8 million purchase
and the mayor will close on the acquisition next month
“We have an opportunity to control a critical piece of property in the heart of Missoula
for the good of Missoula and for the good of the neighborhood,” said council member Amber Sherrill
“It builds the tax base and will be a good thing for that neighborhood
The property has sat vacant for an estimated 40 years and while a number of development proposals have trickled out
largely given the area's lack of infrastructure
A number of plans also identified the property for its redevelopment potential
The latest Midtown Master Plan envisions the site as a new community hub
commercial spaces and employment opportunities
“There's enough acreage here that we can do mixed housing
we can do missing-middle housing,” said MRA Director Ellen Buchanan
“You can create an entire neighborhood there with different scale buildings and different types of housing that address different income groups.”
The property represents a collection of parcels owned by the Beech family and Southgate Mall Associates
The Missoula Economic Partnership negotiated a below-market purchase price with the owners earlier this year
The property as a whole already includes platted right-of-ways for streets and alleys
It also includes a ditch easement that carries water during the irrigation season
The ditch and the open space around it have become a prized asset for the surrounding neighborhood and has come to serve as a defacto park
Residents have asked the city to maintain the open space – a request that will likely be included in a future master plan
“The only way we can guarantee any of that is by the city owning it,” said council member Gwen Jones
“This is an opportunity to have raw land in the middle of town and do something that's really reflective of what the neighbors want
The property also presents an opportunity to expand the street grid and create connections that don't exist
Future redevelopment is expected to create a new north-south connector extending from South Avenue to the roundabout behind the mall
Some proposals have also suggested a new transit station on the property to support a future bus-rapid transit system on Brooks Street
Dense redevelopment of the property would help sustain the transit line
“This is a rare time we get to be proactive,” said council member Sierra Farmer
“We hear a lot of frustration from folks who feel like we don't bring in infrastructure until well after it's needed
This is a time when we can bring the infrastructure in before it's too late
I think this is a real smart investment.”
The Missoula Redevelopment Agency said the master planning process will likely begin early next year once the city closes on the purchase
While Monday night's vote seals the deal
Council members Sandra Vasecka and Bob Campbell voted in opposition
"I have several misgivings about this purchase,” said Campbell
“I feel like I have to sign a blank check to see how this will all unfold
The city's chronic addiction to land banking only drives up the cost of land to other developers
further exacerbating the housing crisis that we're in.”
With backing from area neighbors, economic leaders and the development community, the Missoula City Council on Monday night gave final approval to acquire a Midtown parcel for redevelopment into a new neighborhood.\nRead More

Former England manager Sir Gareth Southgate has warned that young men are being led by “toxic influencers”
Southgate, who stepped down from his role as manager following England’s defeat by Spain in the European Championship final last year, said while giving the BBC’s annual Richard Dimbleby Lecture that “young men are suffering” with feeling “isolated”
Southgate referred to a report released by the Centre for Social Justice earlier this month
which found that young boys without a positive male role model are “in crisis”
They’re grappling with their masculinity and with their broader place in society
“As real world communities and mentorship declines
reluctant to talk or express their emotions
searching for direction and are falling into unhealthy alternatives such as gaming
“And this void is filled by a new kind of role model who do not have their best interest at heart
They willingly trick young men into believing that success is measured by money or dominance
and that the world… including women… is against them
They are as far away as you could possibly get from the role models our young men need in their lives.”
Southgate added that he had learned from his career in football that “success is much more than the final score”
The annual lecture has previously been led by King Charles III and Bill Gates

(WXYZ) — The economy is eating away at some well-known restaurants in metro Detroit
It's just one of the many challenges forcing dozens of doors to close for good this year
The doors are locked at Mallie’s Sports Bar and Grill in Southgate
but it’s just one of the many small spots in metro Detroit shutting its doors on short notice
it could be lights out for a small business that’s been around for decades
That’s exactly what happened at Mallie’s Sports Bar in Southgate
“The hardest thing to do is to close your life’s dream,” says owner Steve Mallie
something is going to happen to where you don’t have to do it
but then there finally comes a time where you don’t have a decision to make; the decision makes itself.”
The abruptness is something that didn’t sit right with a lot of employees
“I knew a lot of people were going to be hurt because of the time of the year and the holidays and all that,” says a now-former Mallie’s employee who asked to be kept anonymous
But sudden restaurant closures aren’t unheard of
John McNamara with the Michigan Restaurant and Lodging Association tells me we’re seeing it more and more
and that’s obviously very unfortunate because that’s not only the loss of a business and the loss of job but also a gathering place
which is what restaurants are,” McNamara says
we saw it happen at Bobcat Bonnies in Ypsilanti
We spoke with this employee who was protesting outside of the restaurant
“We’re out here trying to let the community know what he did to us and make sure it doesn’t happen again,” he told us at the time
we’ve seen signs pop up at Scout Vester in Ferndale
House of Pure Vin in downtown Detroit announced it's shutting its doors
McNamara points to challenges with the economy
changes in customer habits and labor shortages for many of the closures
all of which Detroit restaurant owner Sandy Levine says he’s feeling right now
“It seems like we’ll be back to normal after a few months of solid business
and there will be another slowdown or whatever it is,” Levine says
“HB 6056 is the bill to raise the minimum wage and protect the tip credit
and House Bill 6057 has to deal with earned sick time in Michigan,” McNamara explains
He says he’s hoping legislative action is taken next week

Gareth Southgate has said his next career move could be outside the football industry
In a long post on social media platform LinkedIn
Southgate said he is searching for his next "purpose" in life after his time as the coach of the England men's national team from 2016-2024
"This higher purpose kept me on track, gave me structure, made my life more fulfilling and is going to be extremely difficult to replicate," Southgate wrote Tuesday.
"It's why I'm not limiting my future options to remaining as a football coach."
Otherwise, Southgate has slipped out of the limelight, with England having moved on -- initially with an interim coach in Lee Carsley and, from Jan. 1, with a full-time replacement in Thomas Tuchel.
Southgate said much of his focus has been on his chosen charities
"After eight years serving in one of the highest-profile roles in world football
I'm consciously taking time to reflect on what I lived through and thinking deeply about what comes next," he wrote
"I'm comfortable with this period of 'exploration' and not having all the answers
I'm following the advice I would give to any young person

"It has been the greatest honour to represent my country as both a player and a manager for some 20 years and to be part of the game I love for almost 40 [years]
