and challenger Erin Rider debate during the Salt Lake County mayoral debate at the University of Utah’s Eccles Broadcast Center in Salt Lake City on Thursday
Polls have closed, votes are being tabulated, and Democratic Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson holds a commanding lead over Republican challenger Erin Rider in the race that will determine who will lead Utah’s most populous county for the next four years
By late Wednesday afternoon, early unofficial returns showed Wilson
Wilson jumped out to an early lead over Rider as the first returns posted Tuesday night
Those results were convincing enough for the incumbent mayor to claim victory
“I’m very committed to the work that I’m doing
[I] made a choice a year ago to step up and do this again,” Wilson said
“It’s like any job interview — you need to put your best foot forward and hope for the best
Rider said Wednesday afternoon that there are still too many outstanding ballots for results to be conclusive
“we’re just watching the results and waiting for things to come in.”
Wilson became Salt Lake County’s first female Democratic mayor in January 2019 after serving 10 years on the County Council
She replaced former Democratic Mayor Ben McAdams when he left the position to represent Utah’s 4th Congressional District
Wilson was elected in 2020 to a full four-year term
Rider unsuccessfully ran against former U.S
Chris Stewart in a 2022 bid to capture the GOP nomination for the state’s 2nd Congressional District
Rider would become Salt Lake County’s first Republican mayor since 2005
Salt Lake County voters also weighed in on four County Council seats that were up for grabs
In the race to determine who will represent the council’s at-large “C” seat — one of three countywide seats on the nine-member
partisan council — Democrat Natalie Pinkney was leading Republican Rachelle Morris
The seat is currently held by longtime Democratic council member Jim Bradley
who decided against seeking another six-year term
co-founder of Utah-based venture fund RevRoad Capital
In the race to represent District 2 on the council
unofficial returns showed Republican Carlos Moreno leading Democrat Katie Olson with 51.9% of the vote
is currently represented by Republican Dave Alvord
who decided not to seek reelection to a second four-year term
In the race to replace outgoing Democratic council member Ann Granato in District 4
unofficial returns showed Democrat Ross Romero pulling ahead of Republican Roger Livingston and Utah Forward candidate Nolan Kruse
while Livingston trailed with 31.5% and Kruse followed with 3.4%
In the contest that will decide who will represent District 6
which covers a swath of the southeastern part of the county and includes Sandy and portions of Cottonwood Heights
Republican incumbent Dea Theodore was leading her opponent
Democratic Sandy City Council member Zach Robinson
Theodore had captured 51.3% of the vote in her bid for a second term

1/31High School Boys Wrestling: Johnson vs. Cranford on December 20, 2023.st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}By Jake Aferiat | NJ Advance Media for NJ.comOn any given night
the most Jordan Chapman can do on the mat for his Cranford team is get them six points
Wednesday was one of those nights as Chapman got a pin in just 10 seconds as No
20 Cranford downed Johnson 48-15 in the home opener for the Cougars
But the impact Chapman has beyond the mat is worth far more than six points
The Rutgers commit didn’t spend much time on the mat Wednesday
but made up for it after the match smiling and greeting any and all of the Cranford youth wrestlers who came up to him while doing the same with Johnson coach Rick Ortega and several of the Johnson wrestlers
And while Wednesday’s performance was just one outing
Chapman’s run to a third place medal at the Beast of the East has the junior feeling as confident as ever
Only three other New Jersey public school wrestlers placed as well as or better than Chapman in Delaware and Chapman improved on his showing from last year when he finished sixth
That jumpstarted his season last year that culminated in a third place finish at 157 down in Atlantic City
“I was confident last year after coming in sixth [at the Beast]
I’m feeling a lot better after coming in third,” Chapman said
“I wanted that win and I’m holding myself to a higher standard now with everything I do.”
though — don’t mistake high standards for pressure
Pressure would seem to imply some inclination or sense of doubt as to whether the goals can be met
Beast should be the last time I lose,” Chapman said
“I’m a lot better than everybody on my feet so that’s what the matches coming up are about — just staying on my feet and keep taking shots.”
And for as good as Chapman is and as for as much attention as he garners
Cranford doesn’t just simply go as Chapman does
and they’re just as crucial to the Cougars’ success this year and beyond
But we have some good guys in the lineup that did a lot last year and some new guys filling in too,” Gorman said
“The new guys in the lineup are expected to perform just as well as the other guys
so everybody’s held to the same standard of success.”
Cranford’s season as a team last year ended in the North 2
Group 3 semifinals with a 42-22 loss to Warren Hills
And knowing power points are hard to come by in Union County
Gorman beefed up Cranford’s schedule this year with Southerm
It’ll also help with seeding criteria come Atlantic City
should his guys get wins in those duals and then see the same wrestlers at the state tournament
It’s still early and there’s not much sample size to go on for Gorman and his team
though he’s been encouraged by some things and recognizes that other areas need work
But if wrestling is as much a mental sport as coaches and wrestlers make it out to be
then Jordan Chapman’s perspective doesn’t need much work either
He’s got the results to back it up and realizes people will be coming for him
I want everybody to be coming out scrapping
because that’s what I plan on doing as well.”
Chapman has one more message as well — if the results weren’t enough and you were thinking of overlooking or writing off Chapman or any of his teammates merely because of where they wrestle
Because in the age and with the rise of non-public powers
Chapman assures and reminds everyone that plenty of good can come from wrestling at a public school
You don’t need all that fancy stuff,” Chapman said
get your work in and grind it out and you can get it done.”

one of the three co-founders of Utah’s Market Street Grill and Oyster Bar restaurants — and the man responsible for its signature clam chowder — died last week of natural causes
Guinney had sold all of the restaurants’ assets to an experienced — but unnamed —local restaurateur
spokesman John Becker told The Salt Lake Tribune
“Tom’s hope was that the Market Street Grill and Oyster Bar restaurants would continue to serve the finest
The name of the buyer and the terms of the sale are confidential
but "we anticipate it will be business as usual” for patrons and employees
who were informed of the sale shortly after Guinney’s passing
Guinney’s death marks the end of an era for Salt Lake City’s dining scene. Nearly four decades ago, Guinney — along with business partners Tom Sieg and John Williams — opened the first Market Street Grill and Oyster Bar in downtown
Sieg died in 2008 and Williams, who retired more than six years ago, was killed in a house fire in 2016 — the blaze set by his estranged husband — Craig Crawford
Last October, Guinney, shocked the Utah dining community when he abruptly closed the New Yorker
The Williams estate owns the space; future plans are unclear
Guinney had been the sole proprietor of the Market Street restaurant until Friday
A funeral Mass will be Tuesday at noon at the Cathedral of the Madeleine
son-in-law Jon Bird and granddaughter Faye Bird
Guinney grew up in the restaurant industry
peeling potatoes and busing tables — then doing kitchen prep work — in a coffee shop his father owned
he worked at Delaney’s seafood in Newport Beach and opened up new restaurants
A mutual friend introduced him to Williams
who wanted to open a seafood restaurant in downtown Salt Lake City — taking advantage of what was then Western Airlines’ ability to fly in fresh fish each day from Alaska and the West Coast
" I thought Utah was the perfect place to grow a business," he told The Salt Lake Tribune in 2017. “Salt Lake City was more affordable [than California] and there was this readily available workforce just a few miles away at the University of Utah.”
When Market Street opened, Guinney said, he carried around “a scroungy notebook, covered with stains, with recipes like the clam chowder, the cocktail sauce and tartar sauce."
The popular clam chowder was made with a butter and flour roux, and filled with onions, celery, fresh leeks, sherry and extra-heavy whipping cream.
“It’s one of the finest clam chowders in the United States,” Guinney said. “The consistency is perfect.”
Over the past four decades, Guinney served on numerous committees and community organizations, including leadership positions with the Downtown Alliance, Salt Lake Chamber, and Visit Salt Lake.
Many of Utah’s most successful restaurant owners, chefs and managers learned the business while working for Guinney.
“All of us who enjoy the vibrant hospitality scene downtown owe Tom a debt of gratitude,” leaders of the chamber and alliance said in a joint statement. “It is no coincidence that dozens of Salt Lake’s most vibrant restaurants and bars are clustered around the original Market Street Grill and former New Yorker club. Tom and his partners planted a flag on Market Street that is Salt Lake’s epicurean ground zero.”
Derek Miller, president and CEO of the Salt Lake Chamber, and Dee Brewer, executive director of the Downtown Alliance, wrote that Guinney and his co-founders “raised the bar for dining ambiance, cuisine and particularly for dining service. They trained generations of hospitality workers and leaders that are now working in various industries across the state.”
In addition to their contributions to Salt Lake City’s burgeoning culinary scene, the statement said, “Gastronomy’s adaptive reuse of downtown buildings has preserved many historic gems in our urban core."
Mayor Jackie Biskupski awarded Guinney the Key to the City in 2017 for his contributions to hospitality, philanthropy, the arts, and beautifying and preserving historic parts of the city.
“Like many others,” she said in a statement, “I considered Tom both a friend and a mentor."
While not originally from Salt Lake City, “this was his hometown,” the statement said. “As a successful business owner and community member, he was generous with his time, talents and resources. Kind to friend and stranger alike, and always looking for ways to improve this community through his work.”

(Chris Detrick | The Salt Lake Tribune) Diners eat at at The New Yorker restaurant Thursday
it oozed "cool,” thanks to its speak-easy location
elegant food and exclusive private club status
“It’s where you would go and have martinis with lunch," said Tamara Gibo
“and get the kind of food you would read about in magazines.”
the 40-year-old New Yorker closed for good
dealing Utah’s restaurant community a surprising blow
“It’s heartbreaking," said Gibo, who co-owns Takashi and Post Office Place just up the street
“It’s where the innovators of Salt Lake City would eat."
human resource director for the restaurant’s owner
The company is offering jobs to anyone who wants one at its Market Street Grill locations in downtown
“It’s a sad day for all of us," said Burns
host and cocktail waitress at the New Yorker shortly after it opened
“The New Yorker set the stage for fine dining in Salt Lake City."
Burns said there was no single factor that forced the closure only “that times and dining tastes change.”
The final blow, however, may have come in September, when the Salt Lake County Health Department announced that as many as 650 customers who consumed food or beverages at the New Yorker Restaurant between July 25 and Aug. 15 may have been exposed to the hepatitis A virus
an employee worked while infected and potentially handled certain food or beverage items
The agency believes this case is linked to the ongoing hepatitis A outbreak Salt Lake County has been experiencing since mid-2017
Tom Sieg and business partner John Williams opened the New Yorker in the basement of the New York Hotel. They brought Tom Guinney into the fold in 1980. Eventually, the three formed Gastronomy Inc. Guinney is the last survivor of the founding trio. Sieg died in 2008, and Williams was killed in a house fire in 2016
The Williams estate owns the New Yorker space
so any future plans for the building were unclear
the New Yorker reflected a classic 1940s art deco elegance
with a stained-glass ceiling and luxurious banquettes
elements that originated from the historic Hotel Utah
Will Pliler was the restaurant’s culinary stalwart
joining the staff during its first year and serving as executive chef since 1984
always working on new dishes and keeping the menu current
president of the Utah Restaurant Association
Pliler was the restaurant association’s 2018 Chef of the Year
“It was Utah’s most unique fine-dining establishment,” Sine said
“It will be a sad loss for fine dining in Utah.”
In its heyday as a private club, Salt Lake City Mayor Deedee Corradini was a regular as were those who attended the Utah Symphony, the Utah Opera and plays at the Capitol Theatre. Even the legendary Luciano Pavarotti ate there after a performance.
“It was so packed,” Burns recalled. “It was the place to go for a lunch. It was the place to go after work for cocktails."
For many of those power brokers, however, the New Yorker lost some of luster when Utah did away with private club membership.
Through the years, Pliler tried to recapture the midday crowd with specially priced lunches, but ultimately the restaurant opened only for dinner.
“For many years, when it was a private club, the clientele was exclusive. You had to be a member — or know one — to get in,” said Utah chef Dave Prows, who worked for Gastronomy early in his career.
"I hate to see a place with a great tradition close,” he added. “The New Yorker had that.”
