SOUTH MIAMI, Fla. – A large tree narrowly missed a home in South Miami when it fell during Sunday’s storms
Leer en español
I can’t believe that the car is underneath.’ I just couldn’t believe it,” homeowner Roberto Elizondo told Local 10 News on Monday
The homeowner of the corner house said he could not believe his eyes when he stepped outside
and I was going to go pick them up since it was raining because they had ridden their bikes
and I just opened the door and … surprise!” Elizondo said
Under the 70-year-old tree was a brand new car that was left smashed after lots of rain came down
Hail also fell in parts of South Florida Sunday afternoon
“I was inside and suddenly I heard this ‘whoosh,’” neighbor Connie Stieger said
Back in South Miami where the banyan tree fell
crews were getting ready Monday morning to remove all the tree limbs from the road as quickly and safely as possible
I’ve lived here 40 years and it’s been through hurricanes
I never believed this would happen,” Stieger said
“It could have been that when my wife and kids told me to pick them up since it was raining
I could have been in the car when this happened
So the situation could have been a lot worse,” Elizondo said
Neighbor George Padial had a friendly reminder for those who own trees
“It’s important that you maintain the trees and cut them back as much as we can so when we have storms
we are able to deal with it more easily,” he said
More storms are expected to move through South Florida on Monday.

containment of these flames is extremely important

South Miami-Dade resident Nico Maldonado says commuting in and out of the Keys typically takes him 40 minutes on most days
But the massive brush fire that broke out recently has added several hours to his drive to and from home
Maldonado works for an audio visual contractor doing regular work at Ocean Reef Club
live in the southern part of Miami-Dade County — areas like Florida City
Homestead and Cutler Bay — and commute down to work in the Keys
“Everything revolves around Card Sound to get to Ocean Reef,” Maldonado told WLRN
“There was one point where I was looking to my right on U.S
and I could see the fire tens to hundreds of yards away," he said
Maldonado is among thousands of local residents coping with road closures and dangerous air quality with the breakout of a massive brush fire in southeast Miami-Dade
The fire has burned about 26,400 acres of a non-residential area around Card Sound Road and the 18-mile stretch of U.S

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue officials reported that 65% of the fire has been contained
They have teamed up with the Florida Forest Service to battle the blaze
“I do know of some people who are a bit worried about what (the fire spreading) could mean,” said Angelica Salazar
“Especially for the safety of their lives and also of their jobs.”
Salazar said the smell of smoke has hung in the air since the fire began ramping up earlier this week
Cars in the school parking lot are also covered in ashes
The fire isn’t a threat to homes or businesses, authorities say, but they warn that low humidity and strong winds identified by the National Weather Service across South and Central Florida can cause wildfires to spread quickly
They also say shifting winds may increase smoky conditions

A small blaze in south Miami-Dade County — initially reported on March 12 — spiraled out of control into an inferno that burned 26,000 acres by March 21.
Despite the flames remaining on the Miami-Dade side between the 18-Mile Stretch and Card Sound Road
the wildfire brought the heat to the Florida Keys as the workday was ending on March 18
As the smoke and flames encroached on the only two thoroughfares between mainland Florida and Key Largo
the rapidly-spreading wildfire closed Card Sound Road on four straight days
Police were also forced to shut down the 18-Mile Stretch intermittently between Florida City and Key Largo from March 18 to March 21 to give crews space to fight the flames.
There were moments where no cars were entering or leaving via the 18-Mile Stretch or Card Sound Road
Closures hindered locals from reaching their homes and outside workers from getting to and from their jobs in the Keys
Visitors faced troubles reaching their destinations
whether it be their hotel on the island chain or the airport in Miami.
Intense firefighting — from the ground and air — over the course of five days resulted in the wildfire being 80% contained by March 22
Road closures ceased as traffic moved again on the Stretch and Card Sound Road
Smoky conditions remained for several days.
The cause of the blaze remains unknown as of press time on March 26
but weather conditions weren’t helping Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and the Florida Forest Service crews’ battle
The National Weather Service in Miami said a long spurt of dry weather
mixed with low humidity and windy conditions aided the wildfire’s wrath on more than 26,000 acres of natural land in between the 18-Mile Stretch and Card Sound Road
The forest service said its helicopters made roughly 1,435 water drops
while large air tankers made seven retardant drops at 3,000 gallons per drop
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue also had its helicopters conducting many water drops
while tankers and fire trucks sprayed water on fires near the highways.

Schwisow said information coming out of Miami-Dade County was contradictory for the first 24 hours

The Pérez family’s Related Group proposes a 390-unit Live Local Act project for the second phase of its redevelopment of a South Miami public housing complex
The application comes as the Coconut Grove-based firm has seized on the state law that incentivizes development of apartments at affordable and workforce rents
Related wants to build an 11-story building with 8,700 square feet of retail and 501 parking spaces on a 3.3-acre site at 5949 Southwest 68th Street
according to the company’s application filed to Miami-Dade County last week
would consist of one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments
Related is asking the county for a pre-application meeting to discuss building the project under the Live Local Act and Miami-Dade’s Rapid Transit System-Development Zone — SMART Corridor Subzone
a regulation that gives wiggle room for development due to a site’s proximity to a public transportation station or major road
Pre-application meetings are generally requested before a developer files an official proposal
Gallery at SoMi Parc marks the second phase of Related’s redevelopment of a 6.2-acre county-owned site that was home to South Miami Gardens Apartments public housing complex
The project’s first phase is the 172-unit Residences at SoMi Parc mixed-income building that opened last year at 5961 Southwest 68th Street
adjacent to the Gallery at SoMi Parc development site
Miami-Dade sought a request for proposals to redevelop the 58-unit South Miami Gardens Apartments complex and selected Related’s affordable housing arm
according to a 2022 county commission meeting agenda item when the development agreement was approved
58 units at Residences at SoMi Parc replaced the 58 public housing units lost in the South Miami Gardens Apartments redevelopment
SIGN UPRelated Urban signed a 75-year ground lease with the county for the Residences at SoMi Parc in 2022
It is expected that Related Urban will sign a similar ground lease for the Gallery at SoMi Parc site after securing project financing
The county will receive a total of $101.7 million in payments over the term of the development agreement
Related –– led by patriarch Jorge Pérez and his sons Jon Paul and Nicholas Pérez –– has ramped up its development pipeline. The firm for years partnered with the county to redevelop public housing, and in recent months has seized on Live Local Act for some of these projects
developers can build bigger projects than a site’s zoning allows
as long as at least 40 percent of apartments are for households earning no more than 120 percent of the area median income
The law also provides tax breaks and a reprieve on floor area ratio and parking requirements
In Miami’s Little Havana, Related wants to supersize the 1,379-unit Haley Sofge public housing complex with a 1,038-unit Live Local Act project in a pair of 21-story towers and a 12-story building
780 Northwest 13th Court and 1389 Northwest Seventh Street
In Miami’s Health District, Related wants to replace the Claude Pepper age-restricted public housing building with a 398-unit Live Local project where all units will be at below-market rents
This month, Related, New York-based LeFrak Organization and Coconut Grove-based 13th Floor Investments purchased a 2.5-acre development site 3650 Bird Road in Miami for $35 million
The property has approvals for two 40-story towers with 748 apartments and 20,000 square feet of retail

Detective Andre Martin said in a news release Monday that officers arrived at the scene and found a 15-year-old boy suffering from a gunshot wound
was transported by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital
“I became his foster mom three years ago,” she said
“He showed me nothing but love -- he showed love for his siblings.”
a “be on the lookout” (BOLO) was issued for a vehicle that was believed to be connected to the shooting
He said officers from the South Miami Police Department located a vehicle matching the description of the BOLO and tried to conduct a traffic stop on it
but the driver and a passenger fled on foot in the area of South Dixie Highway and Southwest 104th Street
both were taken into custody with assistance from Miami-Dade police
“Preliminary investigation reveals that the subjects and victim are known to each other and were together at the incident location when a dispute occurred
and a firearm was produced resulting in shots being fired,” Martin said in the news release
One neighbor told Local 10 she was told the shooting stemmed from a robbery
“I heard a big boom go off on the staircase,” Gisele Barrero said
“I went to the last floor and I see the boy slumped over and his homeboy crying
As crime scene tape was placed along Southwest 64th Street
another police presence was established near U.S

Martin later identified the subjects as Javari Omarion Jones
He said while both are persons of interest in the case
the investigation remains ongoing and no formal murder charges have been filed at this time
on charges of resisting an officer without violence
Jones also faces an additional charge of fleeing and eluding police at high speed

“They were all hanging out with each other,” he said
“All of them were hanging in front of the elevator
they all like looked at me crazy and then I went upstairs
it got to be those kids downstairs -- it got to be.”
Lopez said he left his apartment and saw the victim
King’s foster mother told Local 10 that he leaves behind two young siblings

Lennar proposes 192 single-family homes in two projects in south Miami-Dade County
Miami-based Lennar wants to develop Rodan Estates with 138 homes on a 20-acre site on the southeast corner of Southwest 220th Street and Southwest 133rd Court near Goulds
as well as a second project with 54 homes on a 9.2-acre site on the southeast corner of Southwest 212th Street and Southwest 127th Avenue in Goulds
according to applications filed to the county late last month
Both sites are in unincorporated Miami-Dade
led by co-CEOs Stuart Miller and Jon Jaffe
has a purchase contract for the Rodan Estates site for an undisclosed price
The property is owned by Redlands Grove –– led by Joel
Franklin and Ilana Goldenstein and Luis Rodan –– and Citinet Aventura
The Goldensteins and Rodan are based in Pinecrest
Rodan Estates will consist of detached cluster homes on six adjacent lots
including two at 13250 and 13330 Southwest 224th Street
cluster homes are grouped together and share open spaces
Rodan Estates will offer three-bedroom and four-bedroom homes
with 25 percent of the site designated for open spaces
asks for a rezoning from “agricultural” and “estate use modified” to “planned area development.” A separate application requests a land use change from “estate density residential” to “low-density residential with a DI-1 increase.”
Lennar is asking for a pre-application meeting with Miami-Dade administrators
which is generally requested to gauge county staff’s input before an official application is filed
a request to rezone the site from “agricultural district” to “modified single family residential district” will be filed
The development site is owned by Orlando Villacis
The homebuilder is among a crop of developers seizing on south Miami-Dade’s vast supply of buildable land available at a discount compared to sites in the county’s urban core. South Miami-Dade consists of Goulds
as well as the municipalities of Homestead and Florida City
In Homestead, Lennar wants to build 119 single-family homes on a 58-acre site on the southwest corner of Southwest 296th Street and Southwest 192nd Avenue. In September, the firm dropped $16.6 million on a 38.2-acre site at the intersection of Southwest 162nd Avenue and Southwest 276th Street in Homestead
