Liberal candidate Kristina Tesser Derksen on the campaign trail
Unconfirmed MP-elect is proceeding with 'guarded optimism' as the razor thin margin triggers an official recount

The unconfirmed MP-elect in the Milton East—Halton Hills South riding is proceeding with “guarded optimism” as the razor thin margin triggers an official recount
Preliminary results showed that Conservative candidate Parm Gill had won the riding with 32,186 votes
with Liberal candidate Kristina Tesser Derksen coming in second with 31,888 votes — a difference of 298 votes
Elections Canada’s results indicate that Tesser Derksen received 32,130 votes
while Gill received 32,101 votes — a difference of 29 votes
Tesser Derksen said the week has been an emotional “rollercoaster” with some lows and highs
but “the highs are cautious,” she said
“We’re only 29 votes ahead,” she added
noting that there will be an automatic judicial recount
We’re happy with some guarded optimism.”
The Liberals’ minority government is now back up to 169 seats
while the Conservatives now count 143 seats
Gill did not respond to a request for comment by publication
the Liberal party was poised to lose to the official opposition Conservative party
but the comeback is nothing short of “remarkable,” Tesser Derksen said
“Mark Carney is just the right person for the right time and Canadians are smart
they recognized what they needed now to address these concerns (of threats from the U.S.)
and they elected the right person,” she said
she said she will make affordability and housing her top priorities
who was a Milton city councillor from 2010 to 2022
sat with Tesser Derksen on Milton Town Council for five years
and said he’s happy “Kristina is now MP-elect.”
“Her connection to Milton has always been strong,” he said
there is still an official recount that will occur so the final verdict still needs to be confirmed
I think she would be a great MP for Milton,” he said
Di Lorenzo said he feels that using paper ballots federally versus the provincial computerized system has its downsides — a computerized system is better as it reduces human error
Elections Canada spokesperson Matthew McKenna said the validation process involves a returning officer examining the record of votes counted at polling stations to catch and correct any data entry or calculation errors in a riding
A recount happens automatically if the difference in votes between the first- and second-place candidates is within one one-thousandth of the total number of votes received
Monday’s election revealed a 905-belt blue wave that was isolated to parts of the region but strong enough to help deny Carney’s Liberals a majority government
and to give them concern for the next federal election that
Tesser Derksen keenly watched the GTA results roll in
and said all elected people should “take note and listen,” as segments of the population that normally Liberals could count on — specifically young people — sent a message that their voices aren’t being heard
“These concerns are coming forward; they want to have a prosperous future
they want to have that promise of the Canadian dream that my parents and I had and it seems a little out of reach for them right now,” she said
“It’s not necessarily a message against the the Liberal party
it’s a message that ‘government please listen
and we’re going to send that message with our votes.’”

The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office has identified a person of interest in the disappearance of 20-year-old Sudiksha Konanki
who was last seen six days ago during a spring break trip in the Dominican Republic
According to sheriff’s spokesman Thomas Julia, the person of interest is the young man last seen with Konanki, pictured on hotel surveillance video, obtained by Noticias SIN
After an evening party at the Riu Republica hotel
where Konanki was staying with five friends from University of Pittsburgh
video shows the young man holding hands with Konanki
as the group walked toward the beach at 4:50 a.m.
Several hours later
video showed the young man returning to the hotel
He told police he and Konanki went swimming
left the water and fell asleep on a beach lounge chair
Local police said he told conflicting reports about the last time he saw Konanki before falling asleep
“This is still a missing person case,” rather than a criminal case
Two detectives from Loudoun County are now in Punta Cana
working in conjunction with the Federal Bureau of Investigations
in re-interviewing the people who were with
or may have seen Konanki during the hours before she was last seen
since he hasn’t been named a suspect
No arrests have been made in connection with Konanki’s disappearance
Requests to speak with him and his family have not been acknowledged
Dominican National Police say any allegation of foul play “does not correspond with the preliminary conclusions obtained during the re-interviews conducted under the direction of the Public Prosecutor’s Office as part of the investigation.” While the local police investigation continues
their current belief is that Konanki accidentally drowned

Wednesday, the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office named a person of interest in Konanki’s disappearance — the young man who was last seen with Konanki, pictured on hotel surveillance video, obtained by Noticias SIN
The person of interest told local police he last saw Konanki after they were hit by a large wave
According to sheriff’s spokesman Thomas Julia
“This is still a missing person case,” rather than a criminal case
“Our family is going through a very difficult time right now
and we’re experiencing a lot of sadness and pain,” and asked for privacy
There have been no arrests in connection with Konanki’s disappearance
Also, Wednesday, at the request of the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, Interpol issued a Yellow Notice for Konanki
which can enable international cooperation in missing persons cases
In addition to investigators from the Dominican Republic
FBI agents and two detectives from the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office are in Punta Cana
where authorities continue to interview people who were with or may have seen Konanki in the hours before she disappeared
After six days of what local officials call “exhaustive searching,” there’s still no evidence of what happened to Konanki
although initially investigators believed she accidentally drowned
The search for Konanki, who is also a citizen of India, comes two months after four tourists drowned and two others were rescued in January
at the same resort where Konanki and her five female friends from Pitt were staying
and local officials are using software that analyzes tides and current
in an attempt to narrow where Konanki might be
Vice Admiral Agustín Morillo Rodríguez of the Dominican Navy told Noticias SIN scuba divers are searching near coral reefs
“The body may be stranded on the reefs
which is why the Navy has deployed a team of Navy and local divers to comb the entire area where there are reefs or corals
we have not been able to find the young woman,” he told the Dominican news outlet
he said it can take up to a week to find a drowning victim: “When a person drowns
they lose air from their lungs and fill with water
the organs begin to decompose and fill with gas
This process lasts from 36 hours to 7 days.”

Against visiting Freedom-South Riding in the district final on Tuesday
the Pioneers captured their eighth straight Cedar Run District tournament title as they defeated the Eagles 64-52 with a near wire-to-wire victory
After a sluggish start in which Patriot (19-5) struggled to knock down shots from the perimeter and led just 13-12 halfway through the second quarter
the Pioneers came alive using a combination of aggressive defending and potent offensive rebounding to surge into halftime ahead 29-15
While the Eagles (16-9) threatened to come back in the fourth quarter
Patriot had a counter for every one of Freedom’s jabs and survived to add another district championship to its collection
“It's a testament to our coaches and our kids,” Rivers said
They're listening to me yelling at them all the time and telling them they're not any good
“We just have a system where it's a lot of competition,” he added
but you get to see the product that comes out on the court after all of that.”
While it's no surprise to see Patriot back on top
this season has been a different challenge for Rivers and the Pioneers after graduating seven seniors
you kind of take it for granted a little bit,” Rivers said
turn around and do it with a bunch of inexperienced kids that took their lumps in the offseason … I couldn't be happier for the group that they got this and continued our
I'm gonna say ‘Dominance’ of the Cedar Run District.”
In building its 14-point halftime bulge over Freedom
Patriot used a kickstart on the defensive end for a boost after finishing 0 for 6 from deep in the first quarter
The Pioneers kept Freedom's ball handlers in front of them with physical on-ball defense and didn’t let anyone get open on the perimeter or inside with alert slides when off-ball
jumping passing lanes and poking balls free for steals that led to fast break opportunities
including three from junior guard Kai Wilcox
The Pioneers also scored several second-chance points as they dominated the glass offensively
Junior guard Carson Cook – one of the only returning varsity contributors – led all Pioneers with six rebounds
“Carson's been great for us on the boards all year
the Pioneers received stellar contributions from senior forward Jeremy Hanton off the bench
After finishing a reverse layup and draining a 3-pointer from the left wing
Hanton ended the half with a buzzer-beating turnaround fadeaway jumper off an inbound by senior Carter Crumity with 0.9 seconds remaining
The run carried over to the third quarter as Patriot’s lead ballooned to 42-22 halfway through the frame
but Freedom began to claw back after deploying a full court press
By forcing turnovers and getting to the free throw line
the Eagles ended the quarter on a 12-4 run to enter the final period down 46-34
with Patriot ahead 58-46 with two minutes remaining
but back-to-back 3-pointers by the Eagles cut the Pioneers’ lead to six
With a raucous crowd at Patriot High amping up the intensity
the Pioneers slammed the door in the final 54 seconds with three breakaway baskets
including dunks by senior Elijah Gaskins and junior Noah Conrad
Nine Pioneers scored as Gaskins led with 13 points
Wilcox scored 10 and Cook and Hanton had nine apiece
and senior Ethan Kacou and sophomore Christian Cole two
“A lot of us have been playing together for a while
so we've always played together really well,” Cook said
“We pass the ball to each other; we've got really good chemistry with each other
And it's hard for teams to scout us because we've got so many people.”
Next up for the Pioneers are Friday's regional quarterfinals against Brooke Point (15-9)
Patriot has won the last three region championships
“Brooke Point's a well-coached team and (has) a state championship-winning level coach in Jason John down there,” Rivers said
so we got to make sure we're prepared for what they're going to do
