Got questions about how local hiking and biking trails are shaping up for the summer
Members of the Wood River Trails Coalition will be hanging out at South Valley Pizza from 4 to 8 p.m
Fifteen percent of all sales at South Valley Pizza that night will go to the Wood River Trails Coalition to help it with local trail building and maintenance
“We are working with the Bureau of Land Management to bring new trails to the South Valley
so this will be the first time we’re just hanging out in Bellevue answering questions,” said liz Pedersen
“This will be more information than the pub talk we held a week ago at Sawtooth Brewery.”
The evening will give the WRTC an opportunity to offer memberships and acquaint Bellevue resident with what the Trails Coalition does
one of the new trails Wood River Trail Coalition helped with
the snow having melted on the trail that overlooks the Cutters neighborhood of Hailey
Other trails that have been greenlighted include Hailey’s Quigley Loop
the Belle Vue trails in Slaughterhouse Canyon and Silver Linings
which climbs above the Toe of the Hill Trail between the Community Campus and Hailey’s Keefer Park
The nonprofit Wood River Trails Coalition plans to build a 6.5-mile trail in Lee’s Gulch near Bellevue this summer
in addition to scheduling work parties for volunteers to pitch in and help maintain local hiking and biking trails

a shooting was reported at the parking lot of Walmart
Bernalillo County Fire Rescue arrived on scene near the Panda Express and located a vehicle with multiple victims who were bleeding
One video we received showed one victim who was shot in the face
BCFR requested Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office to respond
Another showed two teenagers running from the scene with one grabbing the front of his waistband
It is unclear if these were suspects or two people running away from the chaos of the shooting
The Albuquerque Police Department arrived on scene initially for this incident
There were two victims who had gunshot wounds
Both were transported to the University of New Mexico Hospital
the victim with the gunshot wound to the face was said to have been in critical condition
this was later updated to both victims having non-life-threatening injuries
They are investigating this as a robbery of a phone
BCSO reports that one victim is an aggravated assault victim
while the other is a robbery victim.
BCSO states that no offenders have been identified at this time and despite multiple witnesses seeing people being detained and in patrol cars
no one was officially taken into custody or charged
BCSO states that “this is an active and on-going investigation
Our detectives are working with APD to identify suspects in this case.“

Utah — There's a school in West Jordan that is described as one of the happiest places on Earth
South Valley School in the Jordan School District is our Cool School of the Week
"What makes it a cool school is we get to make like fun stuff and students learning," said SBO President
South Valley is a program for adults with disabilities aged 18-22 where they learn academics
"Everybody is supported and included in everything
it's amazing if you ever get the chance to visit you'll see smiles everywhere," said school Principal Tammy Rajczyk
One place we saw many smiles was the Living Center where students get to learn skills like cooking and cleaning
and then we come in here and we actually make what they want
and then they get to eat it of course," said one teacher
"You start cooking and then when it starts bubbling up you start flipping it to make sure it's perfect," added one student
but you'll find the best one at the South Valley School
"Life Design Beverage Company is a business that we run so we're learning how to handle money
how to follow directions," said the teacher
The students even made a special drink — The Darienne — a sprite with vanilla
All the skills they learn at the soda shop and in other classes can be directly applied to a job
The school partners with local businesses like Honolulu Grill to provide students with on-the-job experience
they do a lot for us which makes my job easier," said the manager of Honolulu Grill
"My favorite part about working at Honolulu Grill is mostly cooking," one student said
Learning is the most important part of any school
At South Valley School there are many ways for students to get involved including basketball and cheer
The cheerleaders even created a FOX 13 cheer that goes like this: "Hey all you Flyers
Granite Credit Union had a special surprise for our Cool School of the Week
"In partnership with Fox 13 and Granite Credit Union you are our Cool School of the Week and we know that this gift is going to help reduce the overall lunch debt that you have," said Granite Credit Union Marketing Director
as he handed a $250 gift to Principal Tammy Rajczyk
"We're so excited to be here and appreciate all the work that you're doing."
we appreciate it," Principal Tammy Rajczyk said as she held back tears
Update: The Washoe Board of County Commissioners approved the funding for the construction of the softball fields
The Washoe Board of County Commissioners is scheduled during its Tuesday meeting to vote on the potential construction of a $2.5 million softball complex at South Valley Regional Park that would include three fields
The softball fields have been in the works for multiple years with $2 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds approved in the summer of 2023 for the construction of new softball fields
which would be home to Washoe Little League's softball efforts
The use-it-or-lose-it funds are contingent on being encumbered by the end of 2024 or returned to the federal government
making this a crucial vote for the future of the proposal
Six bidders vied for the project with Sierra Nevada Construction, Inc. being selected with the lowest bid of $2.365 million. The meeting agenda projects the total cost of the project at $2,516,257
Bids ranged from $2.365 million to $2.975 million
The project would use 35 acres of the 105-plus acres of unused land at South Valley Regional Park
which already includes several soccer fields plus four Little League-sized baseball fields and one regulation baseball field
South Valleys Regional Park has had several master plans in the last couple of decades
The current conceptual master plan released in 2015 called for the addition of three youth soccer fields; three baseball/softball fields
including one full size; an Olympic-sized pool; a large splash pad; batting cages; a skate park; an indoor recreation/community facility; five tennis/pickleball courts; an amphitheater; a nine-hole disc golf course; two basketball courts; a volleyball court; horseshoe and bocce ball courts; a 1.4-acre dog park; a picnic area; and a library expansion
The Washoe Board of County Commissioners will meet Tuesday at 10 a.m
with the softball project listed as "for possible action." If approved
Approving the project would be the first step toward constructing the fields
the Pennington Foundation approved an additional $3.5 million grant specifically to build multiple softball fields with park facilities that include bathrooms and concessions that would be added to the $2 million in federal funds

The Washoe County Commission voted unanimously to hire Sierra Nevada Construction for just under $2.4 million to start on the South Valleys Regional Park expansion. The cost covers Phase 1 of the estimated $18 million expansion on 35 acres
The project will include three flat fields
The highest was $2.975 million from Burdick Excavating Co
Sierra Nevada Construction had the lowest bid at $2.365 million
The funding includes $2 million in American Rescue Plan Act money that has to be assigned by the end of the year or the county loses it. The remainder will come from the residential construction tax and the county’s general fund, according to the staff report
Phase 2 funding will include a $3.5 million grant from the William N
This phase will include two baseball and softball fields
The Washoe Little League has been pushing for the county to expand this area, asking specifically for more softball fields in South Valleys
Wes Mewes serves on the Washoe Little League board and told the commission he thinks the expansion will greatly help female and youth athletes
“We have an opportunity here … to create something truly beautiful that can be used,” Mewes said
Managing director for BattleBorn Futbol Club Marc Radow told the commission he’s worried the soccer stadium will come back to South Valleys
regardless of this construction assignment
“That does not prohibit the fact that a stadium could come back at a later point in time
and we’re asking you to dispel the rumor mill,” Radow said
