Spanish Fort Police Chief John Barber says a woman heard someone outside her Caisson Trace home
and then heard glass in a front window break
"This 17-year-old juvenile forcibly enters into this residence where he's confronted by the father
who's got a wife and three kids in this house," said Barber
fired one shot with a pistol and hit the 17-year-old in the upper abdomen
"There is somebody in their residence in the middle of the night
that somebody can be harmed in his family," said Barber
where Barber says he is in serious condition
Barber says the 17-year-old doesn't live in the Spanish Fort Estates neighborhood where the shooting occurred but is a Baldwin County resident
"The 17-year-old juvenile was at a residence on Caisson Trace earlier in the night with some of his friends
It's our belief that the juvenile suspect was under the influence of a substance when this actually occurred," said Barber
"We don't understand what his intent might have been
We just know that based on the physical evidence on the scene
the entry appears to be the broken glass area
He did make entry into the house," said Barber
Barber says the teen may be facing criminal charges

The family of a 40-year-old man who went missing in the Blakely River about a half mile north of the causeway this past weekend is holding onto hope that he might be found
John DeJonge was last seen around 6 o’clock Saturday night after the boat he was on with another man and his 2-year-old son capsized
so his mama can have a proper burial,” said John’s brother
along with the other man and his two-year-old son
set out on a boat around 6 o'clock Saturday night
David says the boat had motor problems and began to take on water before capsizing in the Blakely River
The father and his son survived by using the overturned boat to move through the chilly water towards the shore
and that's the last that we've heard,” said David
The search began Saturday night with several local and state agencies joining in
but severe weather forced crews and volunteers to postpone their efforts until daybreak on Sunday
The family kept praying and hoping that he was just chilling on a sandbar somewhere
trying to wait for the weather to come down
it is not going to trump my faith,” said David
David says Monday’s efforts were more focused on recovery rather than a rescue
My mom and dad are trying to take it as best as they can in stride
who are out here that are willing to get into the water and get back at it
it does not stop the fact that we need to get him home,” he said
and always willing to lend his younger brother a helping hand
“There was not anything that he could not help me with
Police say the 2-year-old was taken to the hospital but is expected to be okay
The search for DeJonge will continue on Tuesday morning
The DeJonge family created a GoFund Me to help cover John’s memorial expenses
(WPMI) — Near where Highways 31 and 225 meet in Spanish Fort
there are already two shopping centers with grocery stores
"We don't really need another big shopping center," said Spanish Fort resident Nasser Kamassai
LLC is under contract to purchase the land where the shopping center would be built
A representative told the Spanish Fort Planning Commission last month it's too early to say which grocery store would go there
They're still in talks with different entities and haven't inked a deal
Neighbors fear the proposed center will be anchored by a Walmart Neighborhood Market
and 18 wheelers trying to get into a piece of property is just going to add congestion," said Spanish Fort resident Tart Kamassai
"I'm also hugely concerned about the water management across those areas
mostly marshy wetland," said Spanish Fort Resident Christine Saia
The Spanish Fort Planning Commission did not recommend re-zoning the larger wooded parcels that would allow for a shopping center
Those parcels back up to Spanish Fort Estates and Garrison Ridge neighborhoods
The commission did recommend a smaller 1.3 acre parcel that's on Highway 31 be rezoned
Both recommendations now go to the Spanish Fort City Council for a final decision
"I'm really concerned about the wildlife
We have very few places that are for wildlife to go anymore
I personally would like to ask the mayor and the city council to please protect our fort," said Saia
There are two upcoming public hearings people can attend to let city leaders know how they feel
City leaders in Spanish Fort and Daphne met in separate special called meetings Thursday night and declared a state of emergency following the heavy rain and flood event last week
The Spanish Fort City Council meeting can be viewed here
SPANISH FORT, Ala. (WPMI) — Those who stepped up to the mic Monday night at Spanish Fort City Hall brought their conviction with them, and a message:
A new development across the street from another shopping center on a busy two lane highway?
Not in my back yard said resident Brad Bass.
"And I want to ask every one of you that sits on that dais, regardless of where you live in this town, would you want this development 100 feet from your backyard?"
More than 200 people showed up to the meeting, not shy about telling the city council how the feel about a developer's request... to change zoning on a parcel of land near homes and other businesses at the crossroads of highways 31 and 225 from residential to B3 business.
It's a plan rumored to support a Walmart Neighborhood Market.
But even before members of the community had their say, the mayor dropped this nugget:
"At the request of the developer, he has withdrawn his application for the rezoning of these properties."
It was a message met with wild cheers and applause.
A victory, for now, says Christine Saia, who helped spearhead a petition in a very short amount of time.
"Thirteen days!” says Christine. “We started on election day. So it's now 13 days from election day."
And in that short amount of time, more than 12-hundred signatures were gathered.
That's not to say their battle is over... something alluded to by John Argo, representing the group eager to develop the property
"I'm not sure what we'll do but we're gonna take a hard relook at the potential of the property,” he told the city. “It does have some historical features that might be beneficial to the community, some environmental features, and it's possible that we might be able to come back at a later date and emphasis those and scale back the development."
It was that possibility that kept people coming to the podium even after the plans were pulled tonight... determined to let this council know how they feel.
"My wife and I have worked over 30 years for our forever home,” he told the council. “This proposal threatens not only our largest investment, which is our home, but our sense of safety and community. Request to the council:, Please vote against this zoning proposal."
And while the planned project might not be dead, Christine says she's more optimistic after what she's seen here.
"Now that I'm seeing everybody out tonight, now that I'm seeing how concerned my neighbors are about their own home, the children, the safety, the waterways, the environment, the wildlife, I'm seeing so much hope. To me, I'm impressed. I'm impressed with my neighbors."

City Council strikes down proposed zoning change for a Spanish Fort Blvd propertyby Aubrey Spears
(WPMI) — Spanish Fort residents celebrated a win against a developer who requested a zoning change for a parcel near the intersection of Highway 225 and Spanish Fort Boulevard on Monday
the ordinance amendment would have rezoned the parcel from B-2 to B-3 business
“I want to be comfortable with the B-2 options that could be developed
I know that at this time I am not comfortable with the B-3 plan that is being presented,” said Spanish Fort city councilwoman Mary Brabner
Many residents shared their concerns about the proposed zoning change and the types of businesses it could bring
“We can conclude there is actually a huge difference between a B-2 and a B-3 zone
B-3 zoning is causing noise and heavy traffic
not suitable for residential neighborhoods or limited businesses
Residents feared the impact a B-3 business might have on traffic in the area along with water management and the property values of nearby homes
dismissed and undervalued as a resident when no vote on the proposed rezoning for this parcel was taken by the council at the last meeting because
there was more than adequate reason to turn this rezoning down with a no vote,” said Nancy Milford
Mayor Mike McMillan worked to address some of the concerns residents had while acknowledging that the current growth in the city is manageable
by the site plan and by the engineers to make sure everything is done properly,” said McMillan
All councilmembers including the mayor voted to deny the motion to rezone the property
SPANISH FORT, Ala. (WPMI) — SPANISH FORT, Ala. -- A body recovered Saturday morning on Blakeley River in Spanish Fort is believed to be that of a man who went missing in mid-February.
a barge crew observed a body floating on Blakeley River near I-10
and Spanish Fort Fire responded for the recovery of the body
"The individual's clothing and physical description matches that of boater John Dejonge that went missing in Blakeley River on the evening of February 15th," police say in a release
A second man and his 2-year-old son, who were also on the boat, managed to reach the shore safely. They swam in 64-degree waters, using the overturned boat to stay afloat.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of the individual recovered this morning," police say.
Established in August of 2024, The Bull moved in to the Eastern Shore Centre space formerly occupied by the Rico Mexican restaurant. This new eatery is owned by locals Tony and Maureen Cordell and is community inspired.
Keep reading to learn more about this new business.
Tony Cordell is a people person. He loves to cook, to eat and to enjoy great craft beers. Those few things, combined with a dream to open his own business, are what inspired the Cordells to open The Bull.
Tony recalls the anticipation, along with the fear of opening, he felt before The Bull’s grand opening on August 3.
“The first couple of weeks we were opened far exceeded my expectations — looking around and thinking to myself, ‘I did this, this is mine.'”
So far, Tony’s favorite part of owning his own restaurant is socializing with the community and meeting new people. He also loves being able to bring something new to the people of Spanish Fort.
Because The Bull was built with the idea of community in mind, the restaurant’s atmosphere reflects this. With 20 different craft beers on tap, as well as a collection of games for the kids (with more coming soon), The Bull is fit for all age groups to enjoy.
“It is a total different atmosphere from any other restaurant. People tell me when they walk in it is a very cool vibe. I hear this from every age group.”
“People really like our community tables built out of recycled pallets. These tables are intended for folks to get to know their neighbors. They are also perfect for larger groups. This is exactly what we wanted. Casual, laid back, good food, fun for the whole family.”

The Bull host trivia nights on Thursdays from 7PM to 9PM and will soon have weekly live music nights
The Bull’s food selection is best described as American pub food
their pizzas are made with hand-rolled dough
Tony’s favorite appetizers are the fried snapper bites
as well as the fried pork skins + queso cheese dip
“The Big T,” that is named after him
We recommend trying their blackened chicken alfredo
The Bull dessert menu currently includes a lava cake and root beer float
but the Cordells have more ideas in the works
The restaurant boasts seasonal craft cocktails in addition to daily Happy Hours on Mondays through Fridays
You can find their entire menu here.

Her family says she seemed happy Saturday and they're not sure why she left

Sellers says they just moved to the home two weeks ago and Twyla is not familiar with the area
