Story in short: The Spanish Springs wrestling team etched its name into the Nevada state history books after toppling Lowry's 109 consecutive dual-meet win steak with 114
The Cougars have won 14 straight regional titles while being widely know as the most dominant team on Northern Nevada mats

with its previous dual-meet loss coming in 2015 (it last lost a league dual meet 19 years ago)
the Cougars have the regional and state meets to look forward to as the Cougars aim for their first state title since 2019
Quote to note: "It's really an honor to be part of this program that's been built up over this whole legacy
years before me when I was in middle school
And it's pretty cool to be part of this program that's been so amazing
And to compete at a level that this high school's at is really an honor for me
Our coaches have been doing a great job keeping this program stable and keeping it a great program
I feel like that's the best way we kept the streak going." — Tyden Schultz

Mikelonis thrived in his role as the captain of the Spanish Springs cross country team
exhorting his teammates to put the team first
The Cougars won the state championship in 2023
Mikelonis died while on a fishing trip on the Middle Fork of the Feather River near the town of Mabie (between Portola and Graeagle) on Jan

his Spanish Springs cross country teammate
said Mikelonis was a natural leader who was the heart and soul of the Cougars
Forman said his death feels like he's lost a piece of himself

but it was his unwavering support for his teammates that set him apart," Forman wrote to the RGJ
how to make them believe in themselves when they didn’t
His leadership wasn’t about being in the spotlight — it was about lifting others
and showing them what it meant to give your all."

"I’ve learned so much from him — about friendship

Avina, 21, was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 14th round in 2021 and played the 2023 season with the Low-A Carolina Mudcats

The Nevada high school basketball season is underway
and we'll post our weekly Northern Nevada all-class prep basketball power rankings each week
Here are this week's boys basketball rankings
1-0): Spanish Springs tops our initial rankings after the Cougars have posted a 3-1 record through their first four games
including a 20-point win over Damonte Ranch before four-point tilts over Gilbert (Ariz.) and Jesuit (Calif.)
Kyle Penney's team finished 13-13 overall
its first season at or below .500 since 2010-11
We'll know more about this year's squad after the Cougars face Reno on Tuesday
1-0): The Miners are mixing young and old with six upperclassmen and six sophomores making up coach Luke Babbitt's roster
Senior Kaden Rowe currently leads Bishop Manogue's attack
averaging 14.5 points through the team's first four games
The Miners are typically in the mix for a league title but are coming off a down year (11-16
1-0): The reigning regional champions have started the year 5-0 with four of those wins coming against 3A schools
Huskies head coach Matt Ochs is likely to hit the 200-win mark this season as Reno looks to repeat and claim more regional title hardware
but the Huskies feature eight juniors and five seniors on this year's roster
so there is still a strong veteran presence
Tuesday's game against Spanish Springs should be fun
1-0): Typically one of the tougher teams in the region
Douglas is coming off a sub-par 2023-24 season (8-19
7-9 in league) but returns a veteran roster featuring seven seniors and seven juniors
enters his fourth season on varsity and will look to lead the Tigers back to the regional championship
Douglas has wins over McQueen and a pair of California schools to boast about
0-1): Damonte Ranch has passed on the baton from father to son as Dillion Voyles takes over for his dad
The Mustangs are coming off a state title game appearance for the first time in the program's history but lost key players to graduation
The squad returns one of last season's top scorers
who shot better than 50 percent from the field and 3-point line
But the Mustangs are folding in eight new players at the varsity level
Damonte has wins over North Valleys and Wooster but a big loss to Spanish Springs
0-0): Fernley has quietly been one of the more consistent programs in the region
with Cade Knutson's team going 49-9 over the past two seasons
including an unbeaten league campaign in 2023-24 before falling in the state semifinals
the Vaqueros are an older bunch with a lot of varsity experience
the Vaqueros have wins over Incline and Hug
0-1): Longtime local coach John Franklin has taken over the Raiders' program
with Reed opening up its season with a big victory over Sparks before falling to Bishop Manogue
some new names will have to step up if Reed wants to be in the mix at the end of the season
which should be a good test for this new-look program
0-0): Elko's season-opening win over Virgin Valley was the 565th in Chris Klekas' awesome career
making him the winningest public high school coach in the state of Nevada
The Indians have had a winning season every year since 2009
claiming the 3A state championship in 2022
There's no reason to believe the Indians won't make more noise this season
Elko took Reno High to overtime before falling 59-50
0-1): Rob Fabri is back for his second season leading the Lancers
as McQueen looks to stack a few more wins after last season's 10-16 campaign
The Lancers lost top scorer Kade Snyder after his transfer to a school in Phoenix
The Lancers opened the season with a loss to Douglas before stacking its first two wins against out-of-town schools in tournament play
including a perfect 10-0 run through the 3A
missing the state tournament after a regional round loss to Elko

Wolf Pack alum and former NBA player Armon Johnson Sr.
We'll see what the former McQueen head coach can get out of his Hawks after the roster lost a lot of production from last year's team

Kambri Felsted's breakout senior season at Spanish Springs High earned her the honor of Nevada Gatorade Player of the Year in girls cross country
Relatively new to the sport, Felsted won the large-class state championship in November
running a time of 18:38.1 to best former state champion Eleanor Raker
Felsted also finished third in the Northern 5A regional championship behind Gioia Coudriet and Raker
“Never having won a single race in her prior three years of competition
Kambri found the 'Winner's Circle' on five occasions in 2024
including the coveted Class 5A state title in thrilling fashion — beating a two-time state champion by a split second," PrepCalTrack's Rich Gonzalez said in a news release
"She was the class of Nevada last fall.”
Felsted was the top Nevada finisher at the Nike Cross Southwest Regional
crossing the line in 46th place with a season-best clocking of 18:00.2 — the state’s top time last fall by 12 seconds
Among her five race wins was the Nevada Union Invitational in California

Corrects Spanish Springs opponent in previous dual meet loss
It had been 19 years since Spanish Springs lost a league dual wrestling meet
but the Cougars state-record win streak was snapped on Tuesday
And the large-class high school wrestling season has added a new level of intrigue
A few weeks after the Spanish Springs wrestling team set the state record for consecutive dual meet wins
The Cougars had won 113 consecutive league dual meets
McQueen got wins from Evan Krantz (138 pounds)
Tony Ucelli (165 pounds) Jaeden Czerwinsky (190 pounds)
Taitan Green (113 pounds) and Abraham Coronado (120 pounds)
McQueen head coach Jeromy Mumm said the seniors have played a big role in getting the Lancers to the level of the Cougars
"This win means a lot to our seniors who have dedicated the last four years to building the culture of this program," Mumm wrote to the RGJ
and they deserve to graduate with this significant accomplishment
Their hard work and commitment is paying off."
Tuesday's dual came down to the final matches
Sandoval won by default to put McQueen ahead 29-27; the Cougars then got a 30-29 lead
but Coronado then won by pin to give McQueen a 35-30 lead
Spanish Springs won the last match by decision for three points
Cougars coach Joe Imelli said the loss does not diminish what the Cougars have accomplished in the past 19 years
He took over as the wrestling coach at Spanish Springs in the 2005-06 school year and that was the last season they Cougars lost a dual meet
they have won 14 Regional titles and two state championships (2018 and 2019)
"That (McQueen) team got us that night and we'll regroup and move forward," Imelli said
"We have been very successful in what we've done and there's really no time to sit there go 'Woe is me
The Class 4A North Regional wrestling tournament is set for Feb
Imelli said having a strong rivalry with an opponent should raise the interest in the regional and state tournaments
You had two crowds that were entertained for the entire night," he said
"Not to take anything away from anybody else because everybody is doing their best to build a program
but we haven't had any close duals so those are good for the community and good for the sport."
Imelli said his team will get back to work to get back on top
but we'll be back in a dogfight for Regionals
it gives a little intrigue to the sport and if more people show up to watch

(News 4 & Fox 11) — The city of Sparks is pursuing a new Nevada law authorizing transportation officials to build Nevada's first toll road — a 13-mile connector between Spanish Springs and the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center
City council members Monday unanimously approved a 2025 bill draft request which would alter state law and allow RTC to construct a toll road from La Posada Drive to USA Parkway
is aimed at alleviating congestion on the Interstate 80 corridor
currently the only major route to the massive industrial park in Storey County
common in many states for certain roads and bridges
hence the proposed legislative change requested by the city of Sparks
VOTE |Do you support connecting Spanish Springs to USA Parkway with a toll road
a major proponent of regional projects such as the federal lands bill and this USA Parkway connector
told News 4-Fox 11 this road is a necessity
"It's a quality of life issue for employees that work out at (TRIC)
I'm talking with Panasonic and Tesla and some of the other companies out there
They are losing employees because they're getting trapped on I-80 for hours at a time," he said
when you have a guardrail or something go down on I-80 - traffic backs up
You have an accident - traffic backs up."
which rely on federal and state tax dollars
this project could be funded by a small fee that road users pay to travel the 13-mile stretch
The exact route isn't confirmed yet and it's unclear this early in the process how much the toll would cost
It would be the Silver State's first toll road — southern Nevada leaders proposed and passed a bill allowing a toll for the Boulder City Bypass project in 2011
but the project was ultimately funded another way
The connector road would cut the commute time in half for Spanish Springs residents
He referenced a city of Sparks study that showed if 10,000 cars traveled the road daily
Council members generally supported the concept during a short discussion during Monday's regular meeting and passed the item unanimously
The measure will be drafted by the legislative counsel bureau and introduced in the 2025 legislative session
Lawson said he hopes to break ground in the next 5 years
