The 20th annual Criterium in Spartanburg is the sixth stop on the Speed Week series
Andrews is one of the commentators for the Criterium and has been with the race since it started in 2005
For the 600 cyclists who competed in a race in Sewanee
"Spartanburg is the biggest race left to go
and everyone is fired up about it," Andrews said
Andrews describes Spartanburg's Criterium as a "typical four-corner race course with little cobblestone sections
which gives it an intimate feel like a stadium effect."
He compares it to "racing in a tube," he said
Seven men's and four women's teams will be coming to the Criterium, according to Laura Ringo, executive director of PAL: Play. Advocate. Live Well.
The first four races of The Criterium are amateur races
Here are answers to some of the questions spectators might have about the Criterium:
spectators will notice a pace car and motorcycle referees leading the pack
The pace car sets the pace and also alerts the spectators that the peloton is coming
"Our driver is great because he is honking his horn and getting people excited," she said
"They are really watching the safety of the event and the cyclists," Ringo said
"They don't want cyclists doing a different number of laps
They want to keep it fast and reasonably together
What happens if there is a pileup of cyclists? If one or two cyclists fall
they will pull out the neutral flag and tell all the cyclists to slow down," Ringo said
They really control the course to make sure they safely get off it
which has only happened a couple of times here
Andrews recalled a pileup that happened in Spartanburg a couple of years ago
They crashed toward the outside of the course that it didn't affect the last lap."
What happens during a crash is very similar to NASCAR
a decision has to be made whether the cyclists go around at a slow pace
and they can undo the carnage that just happened," he said
"Sometimes they have to go neutral and stop the race and bring medical on the course
and restart the race where the clock stopped."
Cycling is a team sportCycling is the "ultimate chess match," Andrews said
you have four riders racing for a team," he said
"You will have one who is a sprinter who will finish the race
One who is a breakaway rider who gets up the road and forces everyone to chase except for his team
"And you will have someone in between like Robin Carpenter
who would have won two years ago if he hadn't crashed out
If you have multiple assets that can win a race in multiple different ways
Most teams will use radios mainly for safety and strategy among teammates
Andrews said cyclists will still race if it rains
(calculate how many miles away) we stop the racing."
More: Spartanburg's Criterium turns 20 with 600 cyclists, 110 tents; 'NASCAR on bicycles'
Cyclists racing through the winding streets of downtown Spartanburg this afternoon and evening will be coming from all over the world
For those looking to know whom to root for during the races
the USA Crits website lists the names of the teams and the cyclists
It's best to pick a team and root for them
he will talk about the different riders and the different teams and what they are doing and how they are racing," Ringo said
"Some of them are true professional cyclists
while some of them have other jobs but are sponsored and race in the professional category because of the caliber of rider they are," Ringo said
Construction has slightly changed the layout of the tents
The Spartanburg County Library is currently working on its new planetarium
"The library and Harper construction have been amazing to work with and they will pull all the construction fencing back to the sidewalk so we can start setting up tents," Ringo said on Thursday
All of the tents should have been set up except for Church Street
Church Street tents will be set up early Friday morning
Criterium by the numbersTotal number of cyclists: 600
125 riders in men's and 125 riders in women's
The amateurs all race for time so officials can get a general idea of how fast they are going
according to bikereg.com/spartanburgcriterium
the pro women hit 38 mph and the men hit 47 mph in the sprint
Andrews said to expect the same or a little bit slower "because the Spartanburg course is a little bit different
but the average speed for the men will probably be 28-29 (mph)
How is a winner declared at the end of the race? The pro men and women go for laps
"We will ring the bell with one lap left to go."
He said there are only two reasons to ring the bell: for a preem (a prize) or one lap to go

A former Spartanburg County Sheriff's sergeant has filed a lawsuit alleging unlawful termination and political retaliation against the department and Sheriff Chuck Wright
Tracy Moss contends Wright fired her after his political opponent's election sign was discovered near her family member’s property
She is seeking a "reasonable sum for damages."
Wright and the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office were named in the lawsuit filed on April 23
The court record included details about a Wright “hit list” of people whom he suspected supported Nick Duncan
The Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office declined to comment on the lawsuit
Wright announced in March that he would take an unspecified leave of absence from the department
a large campaign sign supporting Duncan was placed on an empty lot next to Moss’s brother-in-law’s business
the lawsuit contends Wright told Moss’s supervisor
that she was “pulling for” Duncan and that he was “going to have to fire her."
with the department for more than two decades
and Chief Deputy Billy Parris told her she was terminated
Wright and Parris responded that there were people at the Children’s Advocacy Center of Spartanburg and the Department of Social Services who “did not like” her
More: What Limestone University closing means for athletes, including lacrosse, transfer portal
Wright also requested that the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division investigate Moss for misconduct involving the closure of cases in the computer system
A letter signed by Parris and dated June 27 said she had been found in violation of two rules
The letter concluded that Moss’s termination would be effective immediately “due to the magnitude of these violations as well as what SLED will potentially discover.”
The lawsuit also outlines that after her termination
SLED determined the case against Moss was unfounded and had received information from Parris stating that “no criminal acts were found during the…investigation.”

The Criterium started with one sponsor tent in 2005 when it debuted in downtown Spartanburg
Today, when 600 cyclists descend on Spartanburg for the 20th anniversary of The Criterium sponsored by PAL: Play. Advocate. Live Well
they will be greeted by ringing cowbells from 110 tents filled with tailgating parties of fans enjoying delicious food and beverages lining the course of a vastly changed downtown Spartanburg
"We've had a lot of cyclists tell us over the years that Spartanburg is their favorite race in the country because we have a spectator experience unlike any other," said Laura Ringo
who has been with the Criterium from the very beginning
"It makes for an electric atmosphere for the riders."
The USA Crits website describes the Spartanburg course as having an "open-air plaza" feel and "dangerously sharp left turns."
"Our (course) is probably one of the smaller ones

It's fun to be loud when the cyclists are coming through."
Spring Fling not happening this yearThis is the second time the CRIT will not have its companion festival
Spring Fling was canceled earlier this year
City of Spartanburg leaders told the Herald-Journal in February that logistical challenges related to various construction projects downtown were one of the reasons for the cancellation
The street festival will likely not return in any form
as the city assesses its overall efforts to plan and host events
as well as support outside groups holding public events in downtown
"I think we are interested to see how it's going to change the event," Ringo said
PAL also hosted the Crit without Spring Fling due to the COVID pandemic
"The smallness could have been COVID-related."
Ringo said the city has been "incredibly supportive" in helping build the Criterium
"This spring and summer promises to be one of the busiest event seasons in our downtown’s history
and this weekend is a great example of that," according to Christopher George
communications manager with the City of Spartanburg
"Both the Crit and Cribbs Burger cook-off have grown their reach tremendously over the years
and they’re kicking off a huge couple of months

Criterium started in 2005The first Criterium was in 2005 in downtown Spartanburg with one tent for sponsors

We've pretty much used all the space that we have
We could add a few more once the construction on the planetarium is done."
The Criterium was canceled in 2020 due to the COVID pandemic
It returned in 2021 at a later time in the year
The tailgating tents that line the race course include businesses that entertain clients
or a group of friends who think it's a fun way to hang out
