Nine candidates are on the ballot seeking four seats on the Spring Grove Area School Board in the May 20 primary
Five candidates are cross-filed, and four candidates are running together as part of The Real Republicans of Spring Grove, a group of conservative Republicans
a senior and a freshman starting next school year
Calugar moved to York County from Romania in 2000 and earned her citizenship in 2011
She owns and operates an insurance agency in downtown Spring Grove and has volunteered with the local Chamber of Commerce
Calugar said she is running cross-filed because she believes a school board director’s role is to support the well-being of all students and teachers — regardless of political affiliation
"I decided to run for a position on the school board because I realized that standing on the sidelines and simply pointing out problems — whether related to budgeting
or overspending — won’t create solutions," Calugar said
"This is my way of giving back to the community and helping shape the future in a positive way."
Calugar has expressed she is firmly opposed to "boys participating in girls’ sports," and believes in protecting fairness and opportunities for female student athletes
and a learning environment where every student feels supported and empowered to succeed."
She has coordinated parent communications for several student sports and performing arts groups that her children participated in through the years
she and her family have served meals to homeless inidivdals in Hanover and York
Gunarich said she is running for school board because she believes high quality public education "is essential to ensure the best possible future for our nation and succeeding generations," she stated on Residents for Spring Grove Area School District, a website run by local residents who are helping to promote three candidates
Gunarich is also seeking board transparency and would like to see policy changes including publishing and preserving livestream links to board meetings on the district website
I believe we should invest in our current infrastructure and develop specific future plans for maximizing the magnificent facilities that exist in SGASD
I value input from our community and would look to focus on issues specific to the Spring Grove area
with minimal influence from outside parties."
Emily LeVaultA mother of two Spring Grove students
LeVault said she believes in the value of a high-quality education
"supported by leadership that is dedicated to the school district's motto of 'Learning Without Limits.'"
Focused on transparency and accountability amongst board members, LeVault has lived in the district for seven years and believes the board "should also be listening to local Spring Grove parents, not statewide or national organizations who think they know best for our area," according to a statement on the Residents for Spring Grove Area School District site
LeVault supports the use of our public tax dollars toward responsible spending for student-centered programs
She said she is running after feeling concerned with the school board for years
and observing valuable programs lose funding
"I will not be the kind of School Board member who simply 'rubber stamps' pet projects or initiatives
I will be the kind of School Board member who constantly asks questions
As a father of three students in the Spring Grove Area School District
Tracy Prince is passionate about the district and wants to create a better culture for students
"The biggest thing is making sure there is a future plan," said Prince
"We're flying by the seat of our pants making decisions that are retroactive rather than proactive," which includes waiting for teachers to retire before replacing them
He is passionate about the music and arts programs offered to students
as well as physical education and activities
Prince also believes it's important to keep the curriculum "well-balanced" and offer career-centered vocational electives for students to develop hands-on learning experiences
for students who are not destined for college
diversity and respect back to the school board
I want to be the bridge over troubled waters that repairs the relationship between community and the school board and the school staff
I want people to be proud to be a rocket."
A lifelong Spring Grove resident and a graduate of the York County School of Technology
Michael Ritz is running for re-election and is seeking a second term as board director for the school district
"There are many tough decisions to make as a Board Director and I take none of them lightly
giving each decision thorough thought and weigh out all options before voting," Ritz added
Ritz promises to continue to work hard and "make sound
common-sense decisions" for the school district
Rodney Shearer is also running for re-election
He has lived in Spring Grove Area School District for 60 Years and has served on multiple committees since 1987
He was a North Codorus Township supervisor for 12 years and worked on the board that lowered the North Codorus property tax
Shearer worked as an excavating contractor
in project management and as an equipment operator before becoming a full-time farmer in 1994
"I ran for school director three years ago to better our children's education and to help figure out ways to control spending, the way we did in North Codorus Township," Shearer shared in his biography on The Real Republicans of Spring Grove page
and I hope to continue to be able to serve our children
and provide a quality education that taxpayers can be proud of and afford."
Jessica Waltersdorff is a mother of three sons attending elementary school, whom she and her husband, a local police officer, raise with values based around faith, family and "the importance of building a strong foundation for the future through education, community service, and conservative principles," according to her biography posted on The Real Republicans of Spring Grove Facebook page.
She is active on multiple boards in her community

and was confined at the York County Prison after being unable to post $75,000 monetary bail
According to the affidavit of probable cause filed against Avola by York County Regional Police
officers were dispatched to a reported assault on the first block of North Main Street in Spring Grove around 8:39 p.m
they found a male victim sitting on the front porch of his home
and reported severe pain in his jaw with difficulty speaking
Officers learned that the victim had stopped at the Rutter's on North Main Street in Spring Grove
allegedly showed the vehicle waiting at the pumps watching the victim
officers describe in the charging documents
The victim began driving through neighborhoods to see if the vehicle would follow
the victim pulled over near the intersection of North Main Street and West Jackson Street
who the victim identified as being the "boyfriend of his ex-girlfriend's sister."
to which they replied "I'm right here" under the belief that Avola would not escalate
The victim told officers that "Avola had held a grudge against him since high school" and allegedly "frequently made threats but had never acted on them," the affidavit states
Avola allegedly exited his vehicle and ran after the victim
attempting to push him around while the victim attempted to walk away
Avola began hitting and pushing the victim
allegedly throwing the victim to the ground and causing his head to strike a concrete flower pot
Witnesses told officers that they had seen the fight
watching a man assaulting the victim and "throwing him around," and that the victim had not fought back
Investigators state in the affidavit that a visible trail of blood was seen from the site of the concrete vase to the victim's home
police confirmed that the victim had suffered a dislocated jaw
Officers additionally obtained text messages that Avola allegedly sent to the victim's girlfriend around 8:54 p.m
said that he "finally beat your little boyfriend's a--" and told her that she was "next."
police were told that Avola allegedly had called the victim's girlfriend from a blocked number on March 25 and had threatened to rape and murder her
where Avola told officers he had "not gotten along with [the victim] for a long time," and claimed that the victim had been "talking a lot of s---."
that he had stopped and waited for the victim at the Rutter's
where Avola claimed he "did not initially plan on assaulting him."
according to the account of the conversation in the documents
Avola admitted to officers that he "lost control of himself" when the victim responded to him "the way he did."
A preliminary hearing for Avola is set for May 7

Two of Surry County’s least populous voting precincts may become one under a proposal the county’s Electoral Board floated at its April 14 meeting
The proposed change has drawn opposition from Claremont’s Town Council
Dendron and Carsley voting districts represented on the Board of Supervisors and School Board
which spans 48 square miles from the western outskirts of the town of Surry to the town of Claremont at the Prince George County line
Voters who live closer to the town of Claremont currently vote at the Claremont Town Hall at 4115 Spring Grove Ave
Those who live closer to the town of Surry vote in the Spring Grove precinct at the county Parks and Recreation Department center at 205 Enos Farm Drive
Virginia law requires that no county polling precinct contain fewer than 100 registered voters
“We’re barely making that,” said Electoral Board Chairman William Etchison
He said the matter had been discussed on and off for the past four years
The Claremont District had 1,282 people as of the 2020 Census
with Black voters accounting for just under half of that total
Roughly a quarter of the district’s residents were estimated to be under age 18 as of 2023
according to the American Community Survey
Virginia Department of Elections data listed 681 active registered voters assigned to the Claremont precinct and 360 assigned to the Spring Grove precinct of Jan
cast ballots in last year’s presidential race
according to Virginia Department of Elections data
The electoral board members did not say which of the two polling locations
would remain the site where Claremont District voters would cast their ballots
The Claremont Town Hall and the Parks and Recreation center are roughly 12 miles apart
If the board chooses to move forward with the change
Etchison said the window for changing a polling precinct ahead of the June 17 primary election has already elapsed
State law further prohibits changing a polling site within 60 days of this year’s Nov
Any change in polling precincts the Electoral Board recommends must also be confirmed by the Board of Supervisors
“We’re just one step along the way,” Etchison said
during the portion of the Electoral Board meeting reserved for public comments
said she and fellow council members would be “strongly opposed” to moving the polling site out of the Town Hall
which she said is already well equipped with handicap-accessibility to facilitate in-person voting
The Electoral Board contends combining the two precincts would save the county between $975 and $1,275 in election officer pay
“It’s not something that necessarily we’re forced to do; it’s something that makes fiscal sense,” Etchison said

Pixelle Specialty Solutions announced Tuesday that it will close a 215-year-old paper mill in Chillicothe
that employed around 1,000 people and will be relocating some operations to its facility in Spring Grove
We value our Chillicothe team and the contributions they havemade to Pixelle,” Ross Bushnell
"Our focus remains on delivering high-quality specialty paper products while ensuring a responsible transition for our workforce and operations in Chillicothe."
The first employee losses are expected by June 13
according to a WARN notice filed with the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services
The release noted that the closure would "strengthen" the company's Spring Grove facility as they seek to maintain their position in the paper market
Pixelle's carbonless and Defensa paper franchises
will be relocated to Spring Grove in the transition
Other operations will be relocating to the company's Fremont plant
The Chillicothe Paper Mill had been owned by several companies over the last two decades
Glatfelter and then Pixelle Specialty Solutions
The Chillicothe mill became part of Pixelle during a $360 million sale from P.H
Glatfelter to private equity firm Lindsay Goldberg that also included the Spring Grove and Fremont facilities in August of 2018
Pixelle Specialty Solutions is an affiliate of Lindsay Goldberg
and took over operation at Glatfelter's facilities during the sale
While not as old as the 215-year-old Chillicothe facility, the Spring Grove paper mill dates to 1852, originally founded as the Spring Forge Paper Mill within a former iron forge, which had given the town its original name: Spring Forge.
Glatfelter purchased the Spring Forge Paper Mill at an orphan’s court sale for just $14,000
the town would be renamed from Spring Forge to Spring Grove

A Wrightsville man is facing a felony charge of homicide by vehicle stemming from the death of a Jackson Township man in a Spring Grove crosswalk in 2024
is charged with a felony count of homicide by vehicle
a misdemeanor count of involuntary manslaughter
a misdemeanor count of reckless endangerment
and summary counts of careless driving causing unintentional death
according to charges filed by the York County Regional Police Department on Wednesday
was detained in York County Prison after being arraigned on Wednesday
The charges were in relation to the death of Eric Legore
after emergency crews had been called to the scene of a pedestrian struck in the 100 block of South Water Street in Spring Grove around 2:26 p.m
Previously reported Coroner called after pedestrian struck by vehicle in Spring Grove
According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by police
officers had responded to the scene in the intersection of Church Street and Water Street in Spring Grove for the report of a pedestrian struck
Officers initially observed a pickup truck in the crosswalk facing west
and a male subject laying in the roadway being tended to by bystanders
Wagaman told officers he had been looking to his right into a parking area for a place to park and did not see the victim enter the crosswalk
he would have to continue down the street to a second parking area
Police obtained surveillance footage of the strike
which allegedly showed the truck hit the victim then briefly back up before Wagaman exited the vehicle and checked on the victim
police noted a large yellow pedestrian crossing sign from Wagaman's direction of travel
along with clearly marked lines of the crosswalk on the ground
Police state in the affidavit that the route Wagaman traveled was a "frequently traveled route" for Wagaman
and that Wagaman himself would allegedly often cross in the same crosswalk after parking and exiting his vehicle
was driving while "attempting to negotiate a right turn at the crosswalk while observing the adjacent parking lot next to his location looking for a parking spot" and was "not paying attention to the roadway to the front," the affidavit alleges
police noted multiple devices and items that were affixed to the windshield and rear view mirror and limited his view
The charges state that police found Wagaman's vehicle had a mounted device holder with an arm and an attachment
a large air freshener on a string with a clip
multiple opaque parking badges hanging from his rearview mirror
and another mobile device holder mounted to the windshield in his line of sight
which police alleged interfered with the driver's view of the roadway
An autopsy by a forensic pathologist determined that Legore died of blunt force injuries due to the collision with the vehicle
A preliminary hearing for Wagaman is scheduled for March 19

City Clerk/Administrator Jana Elton was also present
The council unanimously adopted both the Agenda and Consent Agenda following two added items

Elton shared that a walk-through through the former Little Gnome daycare building had been done
She informed that the building’s interior needs the following – a deep clean
“Who foots the bill for this new carpet?” Elton answered that she did not know
Elton stated she thinks the community would assist with cleaning

we better grab it while we can.” Elton commented that some people feel the city should not get involved

The press release proclaims that this collection contains “zero songs about break-ups”
somewhat cheekily alluding to their reputation for wrenching songs about relationships
lead singer Spencer Peppet found herself inspired by conversations real and imagined with ex-lovers
Wrestling with these ghosts of the past is the central theme of the record
which takes its name from a cemetery in their hometown of Cincinnati
Spring Grove is the defining statement the Ophelias have been steadily working toward
a convergence of the best songwriting and production in their impressive discography
Everything is just a little better this time out
Peppet’s hooks have never been stronger
Her lyrics are full of vivid images of clouds hanging around as the things that went unsaid
These more propulsive songs give Mic Adams opportunities to shine
they ground the songs and deliver some of the record’s most rewarding new wrinkles in The Ophelias’ sound
Julien Baker
who sang on Crocus highlight “Neil Young on High”
The Ophelias have been progressing toward a heavier
but this has always been part of their live shows
Anyone who has seen them perform has seen the joy on their faces when they crank up the intensity
There have been hints of this on earlier records
Last year’s Ribbon EP was the closest they have come to capturing the energy and intensity from the stage in the studio
“Cumulonimbus” sounds like the bridge between their previous records and their new sound
guitar-forward songs make Spring Grove soar
The Ophelias sound more inspired and energized than they ever have
“Sharpshooter” and “Salome” are two of the catchiest
warm sound that retains that driving percussion
Rocking out sounds fabulous on the Ophelias
and these will surely be setlist highlights when they play these new songs live
the Ophelias haven’t wholly abandoned what fans have come to love from them
“Open Sky” and “Forcefed” have a rewarding familiarity that amps up the atmosphere to stand apart
“Parade” is another signature Ophelias track
pretty ballad that takes its place among their more heartrending songs
“Cicada” is another success in that vein
but contains an explosive middle section before receding
“Gardenia” has a gauzy quality; this added texture sounds terrific
Andrea Guttman-Fuentes’ violin has always helped the group stand apart; on this track
is another song that delivers the melancholy folk on which the group built their reputation
coming to a decision to “try my best to let things just pass”
and it’s thrilling to hear them push themselves to new heights
It is one of the essential records of the year to date
When the Spring Grove boys’ basketball closed its regular season Feb
first-year head coach Jared Smith could only hope it wasn’t the end for the group
the Rockets’ fate came down to one Mid-Penn Conference game Feb
whose playoff hopes had long been extinguished
to win at 15th-ranked Palmyra and knock the Cougars out
an assistant coach and a handful of players attended the game and sat right behind the Red Land bench as the Patriots’ biggest fans for one night
Spring Grove got its break, as Red Land handled Palmyra 65-46 and the Rockets landed the No. 16 seed when the District 3-5A bracket was unveiled last Thursday. As it turns out
Smith’s Rockets are bound for the state playoffs after knocking off No. 1-seed Manheim Central, 45-38, on Tuesday night. They’ll visit No
with two games — be they in the championship or consolation bracket — on the docket for next week and at least one PIAA 5A tournament game looming in March
“Seeing the kids (have) the realization of
we can win,’ that’s a big thing,” Smith said
“They showed it once they took the lead — I don’t think we gave it up after that.”

The Rockets took a 28-27 advantage into the fourth and gained separation late
made its only 3-pointer of the game 44 seconds in
Seniors Ky’Sier Ludvig and Dominick Pierre scored 14 and 11 points
Isaiah Holland finished with seven and Kayleb Allen had six after both guards came up clutch on free throws late
The sharpshooting Cooper Smith scored just three points without a field goal
but Spring Grove’s physicality helped make up for it
Both Ludvig and Pierre reached or threatened double-digit rebounding totals
“We’ve been trying to get that all year,” Jared Smith said
but we got offensive boards and putbacks (Tuesday)
we can drive and draw fouls’ … we made our foul shots down the stretch
The eight District 3-5A quarterfinalists — plus one team from the consolation bracket
which means Manheim Central’s season is not over — have all qualified for states
Spring Grove will make just its third PIAA appearance ever; the other two trips came in 2016 and 2017
with Eli Brooks guiding the Rockets to the 2017 state quarterfinals
Brooks scored 2,426 points in his high school career and starred collegiately at Michigan
Jared Smith was the program’s all-time scoring leader
piling up 1,676 points before graduating in 1993
He was also an all-state star in soccer and played that sport at Shippensburg
His coaching career included a stint with Central York’s middle school program — several of his pupils contributed to the Panthers’ historic state title last year — before he moved back near his alma mater
Smith led the middle school program and served as a varsity assistant under Ryan Eisenhart before assuming the top job in 2024
Eisenhart coached the Rockets for six seasons but wanted to step away from the post so he could watch both his son and daughter compete for the Rockets
Smith’s hire was officially approved in the summer
Spring Grove graduated its three leading scorers from 2023-24
but a deep group of juniors and seniors stepped up quickly as the Rockets started 6-3
The schedule eventually got the better of the group
though — Spring Grove finished 4-8 in YAIAA Division I
in which the Rockets are the only 5A school
going 5-9 with eight combined losses to Central York
as Spring Grove will take an 11-12 overall record to Exeter Township on Friday
A potential semifinal tilt against either No
But Tuesday’s triumph provided a long-awaited jolt of confidence to a program that’s faced an uphill battle for years
Smith hopes that celebratory bus ride home was the first of many
There’s not a team we can’t play with or beat that’s left in this
… I want to see them take advantage of this opportunity they were given and just go ball out and what happens

the opening track from the Ophelias’ new album Spring Grove
is addressed to an estranged friend who just got out of a bad relationship
“I don’t see you anymore/ It’s been three years
I’m better off/ But I had heard what’s going on/ And I have got a single thought/ It’s: Good for you/ I’m really happy for you.”
like a letter to someone who Peppet knows may never read it
almost all of the album feels addressed to somebody who is no longer in the narrator’s life — although they’re not all so cordial
“Even though I don’t know what you look like in present tense
the feeling of you haunts me,” Peppet sings on “Cicada.” “The things that I didn’t say are always going to hang above you like a cumulonimbus,” goes the chorus of “Cumulonimbus.” This would all make for a straightforwardly melancholic album if not for the eerie
dread-infused sonics — cavernous production
It makes the presence of these memories feel like honest-to-god hauntings
Spring Grove by The Ophelias
The songs were inspired by a period of Peppet’s life where she frequently dreamed about having conversations with people from her past
“I think the weirdest part was that most of these dreams were resolutions
I was dreaming about things improving,” Peppet says now
on a Zoom call with bassist (and Peppet’s fiancée) Jo Shaffer and drummer Mic Adams (the band is completed by violinist Andrea Gutmann Fuentes)
“It was not me getting into arguments with people in my dreams
like screaming ‘Fuck you,’ or ‘I can’t believe you would do that.’ A lot of the dreams were finding resolution
The range of relationships that she drew on was wider than in her previous
and these songs were written through 2020 and 2021
there was space to explore the other stuff that wasn’t
loving relationship — [but] I also am still feeling grief and loss and heartbreak
just not in a romantic sense,” she says
“A lot of these are not even like just like
where the thing that helps is writing about them
and what’s my relationship to this person
once it’s out in the world it’s not mine anymore

The Ophelias formed as teenagers in Cincinnati
who had already directed some of their music videos
there was a thriving under-21 music scene with the DIY ethos that tends to happen in cities with little cultural infrastructure
“All of us had been playing in bands with some — you know the type — commandeering teenage boys,” Peppet recalls
When they got together in Adams’ bedroom for their first practice
it was their first time playing together with other girls (Adams came out as a trans man in his early 20s)
The chemistry was immediate; they wrote almost their entire first album
“There was just a level of respect and listening that [made us] really tuned into each other right off the bat,” Peppet says
The band caught the attention of Why?’s Yoni Wolf
helping to get them signed to Joyful Noise and producing their next album
It was while they were touring on Almost that they met Julien Baker; her friend was working the door at a Nashville show and had told her to come check it out
and a little later the band invited Baker to sing on a track from their 2021 album Crocus
and then hit them up with a counteroffer: she wanted to produce their next record
It would be her first time producing for another band
So in 2021 the band rented a house in Memphis and spent 10 days tracking Spring Grove with Baker (the band tend to call her “JB”) and her usual engineering partner
“Julien is a really good producer,” Peppet says
“She’s good at looking at both the big
overarching stuff and then also the little tiny details within a song
and manages to feel very holistic and very thoughtful and very nuanced
so she’s able to dial in stuff — ‘Oh
I want this amp to sound a little bit more like this
how do you feel about that?’ She brought two suitcases of pedals with her.” They were a little nervous to get to know her
but the ice broke quickly — the first time they hung out
and they bonded while chasing her back down
“That was incredibly disarming,” Adams grins
“Frantically running around the neighborhood [with her]
immersed in making the album instead of treating it like a nine-to-five addition to their normal lives
and kept them in touch with themselves too
“You have to figure out ways to maintain this sense of self,” Adams says
And I kind of felt like I had to just be myself during it
because all I had was myself — I wasn’t going home to anything.”
Inside the studio they felt encouraged to be themselves too
Since their last record both Adams and Shaffer had transitioned — Adams as a man
“That does a lot for feeling comfortable in a space
I’m actually myself in this space,” Peppet says
Adams agrees: “I felt in my own body while we were recording
and not like recording was something that was happening to me
or around me.” The environment that Baker and Lauber created for recording felt encouraging and exploratory
when she was struggling to get a take right in the vocal booth for the track “Parade.” “JB came in and was like
and remember what all of the words mean.’ And that’s the take that ended up on the record.”
After Adams had finished tracking drums for the intense
soaring outro of the title track “Spring Grove,” Lauber asked him to get back in there and “play the outro as hard as you can.” He did
“It was the first time I needed to play really loudly
and it wasn’t like some sound guy at a venue being like
[condescendingly] ‘Is that as loud as you’re gonna play?'” Adams recounts
“It felt symbolic of being very open and able to be myself.”
“It feels like that encapsulates a lot of the experience,” Peppet adds
While the process felt experimental and open
it also felt more focused and deliberate than ever
we’re gonna invite everyone we’ve ever met to come play on this record.’ Like
let’s just expand and expand and expand and expand
Which I think loses a little bit of that purpose
it was just the four of us and Cal and Julien
So it kind of went from this big thing to like
a distillation of the band and our sound.”
Previous Ophelias albums have been folk-tinged indie rock with simple instrumentation and production (Almost got a little more production-heavy
but there’s always been a hint of darkness under it
‘Call me chill one more time,'” laughs Peppet
Spring Grove turns that tension into its crux
using carefully-landscaped atmosphere to make the darkness manifest sonically
The lurching “Spring Grove” and hushed
chilling “Vulture Tree” are some of its creepiest moments
while big chorus tracks like “Open Sky” and “Say To You” strike a balance between pop smarts and uneasy undercurrents
It’s no coincidence that Shaffer is a horror filmmaker — she’s made two feature films — and Peppet has worked with her on scores
“I think the sense of dread and anticipation are really important in horror
in the textures of it,” Shaffer says
Also palpable across Spring Grove is its sense of release
The force of that anger comes to a head on “Salome,” a cool and driving track where Peppet repeats
“I want your head on a platter.” The title and narrative make reference to the Biblical story of Salome
the teenage stepdaughter of King Herod who asked for
When she learned the story at Catholic school as a teenager
Peppet thought Salome sounded pretty awesome
“It’s using a Biblical story to explain the hundreds of stupid misogynistic things that have happened to us as a band
It gets to the point where the only thing you can say is like
I need to run through the woods with a knife
we’ve had a fair amount of different experiences of accepting and rejecting womanhood
And I think that one of the parts that makes this [album] distinctly feel like it is connected to that experience is that feeling of righteous anger.”
Spring Grove feels like a landmark moment for the Ophelias
It’s a delivery on the promise that they’ve been showing over their last several records
and a statement of fully-realized identity
It’s fun to think about what will happen from here — and excitingly
there are a lot of new songs sitting in a Google Drive folder
“Something we’ve been talking about is trying to play more new songs on the road
and just road test them before we record them
which we haven’t done before,” Peppet says
Adams agrees: “Time is really important
fleshing out a song and living with it and letting it grow and breathe.”
“I feel like electronic sounds is something that I’m curious about,” adds Shaffer
“We’ve talked about adding a sampler into our live sound
Just continuing to play with texture.”
Peppet sums up: “I think [the plan is] more exploration
with all of the trust that we’ve built up over the years.”

a mother and a longtime counselor at Spring Grove Area High School
according to a post by her husband and a message from the school district
"It is with a heavy heart that we share the news of the passing of Mrs
a beloved School Counselor at Spring Grove Area High School," Superintendent Joseph A
Schmoyer has been a cherished member of our school community for the past twenty years and will be deeply missed by all who knew her," the statement says
"She was known for her infectious laughter
and her unwavering dedication to our students
Schmoyer touched the lives of many students and colleagues throughout her career
Her positive impact on our school community will be long-lasting."
Schmoyer's husband, Brian, wrote a post on CaringBridge that his wife died early this morning
She had collapsed on New Year's Day after going for a run and suffered irreversible damage to her brain
The community has been rallying around the family by offering meal trains and hosting fundraisers, such as a Go Fund Me and a popcorn sale
Another fundraiser — a 5K — is in the works
Schmoyer started running more than 20 years ago and ran five days a week
The money raised from the event will go to Pappus House
The PIAA District 3 basketball playoffs are still more than two weeks away
Spring Grove’s boys have no idea whether or not they’ll be in the field
The Rockets concluded their regular season with a 50-46 loss at York Suburban on Saturday
and while they still woke up Sunday holding the 16th and final projected spot in the District 3 Class 5A tournament
they knew they would need some help to receive another opportunity
Teams across the district will wrap up their schedules in the coming week and a half. Squads in the York-Adams League, which concluded divisional play Friday and tips off its postseason tournament this Friday, are often the first in the clubhouse. New Oxford, which remained 17th in the Class 5A power rankings with Saturday’s win over Northern York
The six squads who rank directly behind the Colonials
each have at least three contests remaining
while each of the five squads ranking ahead of the Rockets still have multiple tilts left
Spring Grove jumped out to a 6-2 start under first-year head coach Jared Smith
who held the Rockets’ all-time scoring record for more than two decades before Eli Brooks broke it
The team slipped to 6-7 with a five-game losing streak as division play ramped up
Spring Grove lost each of its final four contests
The Rockets lost by six at York High on Wednesday and against Dallastown at home Friday to close their York-Adams Division I slate
Saturday’s game at Suburban — which was originally scheduled for Jan
19 as the closer of the Hoops for Harmony showcase — was controlled by the Trojans (17-5)
26-17 and 40-31 after the first three quarters
Silas Leonard sank 11 of 18 free throws and finished with a game-high 21 points
Kayleb Allen and Isaiah Holland led Spring Grove with 16 and 15
the sharpshooting junior who has been the Rockets’ top scorer this season
Friday roundup: Rivals roll to multiple shared division titles
York-Adams League weekend scoreboard for Jan. 31-Feb. 1
York Suburban closed its regular season fifth in the District 3-5A rankings
one spot behind fellow YAIAA Division II co-champion West York
only the Trojans and Spring Grove have completed their schedules
after dropping back to .500 with Friday’s Division II loss to Suburban
knew it needed to win its final two games to give itself a realistic playoff chance
It certainly helps to have junior Brody Holmes around for a quest like that
Holmes dropped 35 points to lead the Colonials in Saturday’s 69-56 victory over Northern York
which projects safely into the District 3-5A tourney field
New Oxford (11-10) led 34-30 at the half but rode 13 third-quarter points from Holmes to a 59-44 advantage entering the fourth
Holmes then scored eight of the team’s 10 points in the final frame
Fellow junior Brayden Billman chipped in 15
while the Polar Bears (11-8) received 22 points from Ryland Yinger and 17 from Luke Lehman
New Oxford closes its regular season Tuesday at Littlestown; because the Thunderbolts are a Class 4A team that’s just 6-15 this season
a victory by itself actually wouldn’t vault the Colonials past Spring Grove in the rankings
That means both teams will simply have to sit and watch as bubble teams from other leagues play themselves in or out
Boys: The regular season is also in the books for York High
which improved to 16-6 with a 73-54 win at Bishop McDevitt on Saturday
The Bearcats vaulted to 11th in the District 3-6A rankings
First-year coach Kerry Glover guided a young team to a 5-5 start
but York High is 11-1 since sophomore Nasir Barnes made his season debut Jan
4 (Barnes starred at York Suburban last season before starting this school year at a prep school in Maryland)
is all but locked in to the District 3-2A No
which likely means a third straight playoff showdown against rival Delone Catholic
The Irish closed a 17-5 regular season with Saturday’s 65-27 home thumping of Columbia
Jake Dallas led a balanced scoring attack with 15 points
West York came tantalizingly close to an outright YAIAA Division II title before losing 44-42 to Eastern York on Friday and dropping into a three-way tie for first place
The Bulldogs bounced back Saturday at Gettysburg
winning 56-38 thanks to 25 combined points from senior twins Grady and Luke Hoffman (14 and 11
West York is 16-5; its Monday home game against Middletown will likely determine whether it finishes ahead of or behind Suburban in the power rankings
a metric that will also be used as a tiebreaker for league tournament seeding
Littlestown won its first non-league game of the season Saturday
Peyton Bossom and Zach Murray scored 18 apiece for the Bolts
Kennard-Dale took a 58-29 afternoon loss at Ephrata
which dropped the Rams to 5-16 this season
Girls: A light Saturday slate included a Division III makeup game between Biglerville and Littlestown after the teams were initially scheduled to play Monday
moving the Canners to 12-8 (8-6) and keeping them in the projected District 3-3A field
Kennard-Dale remains on the Class 4A playoff bubble after Saturday’s 60-56 overtime home loss to Penn Manor
Kylie Pietrowski scored 19 points for the Rams (11-10) in the setback
Aaron Eaton’s team visits a two-win Garden Spot group Monday
In another makeup game from the Hoops for Harmony showcase
Northeastern fell 44-33 to Wyomissing at York Suburban
Lauralye Kennedy made five 3-pointers and led the Bobcats (4-16) with 15 points
More than half of the York-Adams League will take the court for non-league action Monday
with a host of teams wrapping their seasons
Dallastown’s boys likely need a home win over Susquehanna Township and some help to crack the District 3-6A field. South Western’s girls, who currently hold the final 6A playoff spot
can give themselves breathing room with a win at Waynesboro
York High’s girls are the first team out in 6A and need a win at Columbia to have any hope
Bermudian Springs sits 10th in the 4A boys’ rankings (second team out) ahead of a home tilt against Annville-Cleona
while the Bermudian girls are 11th (first team out) entering their visit to Susquehannock
only South Western’s girls have any other games left
Elsewhere, Central York’s Ben Natal is within 10 points of the program’s all-time scoring record — set last year by former teammate Greg Guidinger — as the Panthers prepare to visit State College on Monday
The rest of the week will feature scattered action before the York-Adams League tournaments begin with boys’ quarterfinals Friday and continue with the girls’ opening round Saturday

more than three weeks after she collapsed at her home following a run on Jan
Her hospitalization and subsequent death led to an outpouring of grief and support for the family from the Spring Grove community — as well as other nearby school districts
