A woman was driving across the railroad tracks at 400 North and 400 West when her car stalled, according to Springville Police. When a driver behind the woman's vehicle noticed the delay, they jumped out and helped her swiftly escape before the SUV was struck and carried 100 yards down the tracks. Springville Fire and Rescue also commended the train engineer. "A great job by the BNSF Engineer also saved her life, due to his attentiveness and quick action. The BNSF supervisor said it is not normal to slow as fast and as safely as he did, feathering 5 engines brakes," the department shared on social media. The railroad crossings at 400 North and Center Street were closed as police investigated the incident but have since reopened. SPRINGVILLE, Utah (KUTV) — A bystander is being hailed as a hero after rushing to rescue a driver whose vehicle was stuck on railroad tracks moments before it was struck by an oncoming train. The incident occurred sometime around 9:30 p.m. Saturday, April 12 at the 400 West railroad crossing at 400 North and Center Street, according to Springville Fire & Rescue officials. Authorities said the vehicle had become lodged between the crossing arms on the tracks. The driver, who was the only occupant, hesitated to exit the car. In seemingly perfect timing, an unidentified bystander noticed the delay and ran to assist, helping the driver escape just seconds before the train struck the vehicle and dragged it nearly 100 yards down the tracks. Emergency crews from Springville Fire & Rescue, locomotive engineers, BNSF Railway, and the Springville Police Department responded swiftly to the scene. A BNSF Railway supervisor said the train crew acted quickly, working attentively to slow the engine and feather five brakes in an effort to minimize impact. In a light-hearted recap of the incident, Springville Fire crews wrote, “We discovered that even Fire Engine Engineers have heroes, Locomotive Engineers!” No injuries were reported. Authorities have not yet identified the bystander who intervened. --------------------------------------------- (Leah Hogsten | The Salt Lake Tribune) Utah Valley Hospital in Provo, Feb. 7, 2023. A man shot by Springville police Saturday was taken to Utah Valley Hospital but succumbed to his injuries. An officer stabbed during the confrontation was also treated at the hospital. Springville police officers shot and killed a man after authorities say he attacked an officer with a knife Saturday, according to a news release from the Springville Police Department. One officer was also injured in the confrontation, according to police. The police shooting unfolded after neighbors called police at around 10:25 p.m. that evening to report that a woman was screaming and crying. When officers arrived, according to the news release, a man “abruptly” came outside and “attacked one of the officers with a large knife.” Both officers at the scene, including the one hurt, drew and fired their weapons at the man, Springville police Lt. Warren Foster confirmed Tuesday. Police said the officers treated the man until medical help arrived and he was taken by ambulance to Utah Valley Hospital before succumbing to his injuries. The officer who the man attacked was also hospitalized with a stab wound, according to the news release. That officer was later released from treatment and is expected to recover. Foster said the department isn’t immediately identifying the man or releasing more details about him at the request of his family. It’s unclear whether police intend to in the future. The Utah County Metro “Officer Involved Critical Incident” team is investigating the Springville police shooting, as is protocol. The two officers who opened fire on the man were both placed on paid administrative leave. presence were each adopted by the city within the last two years A new public art program looks to amplify both ideas at once Springville announced a plan Tuesday to establish art loops in its city center — walkable paths that will link downtown landmarks to each other through “interactive art experiences” — a document detailing the plan states The project will be supported by a $49,000 grant provided by T-Mobile’s Hometown Grant Program “It’s just a really exciting project that’s going to further the goals of reframing downtown,” Springville Museum of Art Executive Director Emily Larsen told the Daily Herald “It’s going to connect the art museum and the library and the civic center and all these areas of downtown.” The goal is to implement a different piece of art every half block along three separate loops that weave their way through town These art pieces will have digital material to help individuals interact with it The “Yellow Route” will be designed for kids and families library and civic center through the “Youth Art Walk” on 200 East The “Blue Route” is 1.25 miles to walk and moves between the art museum and civic center on Main Street and 300 south The “Red Route” is 3 miles and touches nearly every portion of downtown offering pedestrians a chance to “experience the most public art and historic architecture,” the plan states “You can walk through and have this interactive engaging art experience that creates meaning and fosters connection,” Larsen said There are 53 listed art projects that will be built over the course of four phases The projects are split into eight themed areas: Urban arts Phase 1 aims to be completed by February 2026 and includes roughly half of the planned projects ranging from murals to sculptures and other smaller works Larger projects are detailed in the later phases One idea is to turn 200 South into “Festival Street” between 100 West and 100 East decorating the street with additional public art and inserting performing art infrastructure There are also ideas to build a “Water-Play Sculpture” at Contractor Legacy Park and a “Pop-Up Plaza” that can host shows along Main Street These concepts won’t be finalized until the Springville City Council finalizes its budget in June Arts and Recreation Board to allocate some of next year’s funding towards “Festival Street,” Larsen said The other large projects remain more abstract “The other things are probably further out unless the right funding comes in and we get all the buy-in of our community and the city council to move forward quicker,” she said LLC | paramedics arrived The man was transported to Utah Valley Hospital One officer sustained a minor stab wound that was considered non-life-threatening and has since been released from the hospital The incident is now being investigated by the Utah County Metro Officer Involved Critical Incident team It was a quiet Saturday night for Blake Everett who lives across the street from where the shooting happened “It started off with one shot,” Everett said Monday “My fiancé was really worried; she thought they were shooting at the house and she was telling everyone to get down,” Everett said Everett and his family are still processing what happened “I see the effect it’s had on my fiancé,” he said “She really grieves for what we assume is the mother or wife — either way Springville Police said Monday that two police officers are on leave They had no further updates and declined to invterview on camera “It’s definitely a humbling experience because you never really think that it could happen to you,” Everett said A heroic act by an unnamed person helped prevent a tragedy on a railroad track in Springville on Saturday A vehicle got stuck between the crossing gates at the railroad crossing at 400 West and 400 North on Saturday evening when a train was approaching and the driver delayed exiting A person responded by helping the driver out of the car just before the train made impact with the vehicle and dragged it 100 yards Springville Fire also lauded the efforts of the BNSF train engineer who noticed the vehicle on the tracks and hit his brakes “A great job by the BNSF engineer (who) also saved her life due to his attentiveness and quick action,” a release said “The BNSF supervisor said it is not normal to slow as fast and as safely as he did The accident occurred next to a neighborhood where resident and high school student Brenson Woodward said he was home watching “Criminal Minds” when he heard a loud blaring sound pretty much never letting up on the horn,” Woodward told the Daily Herald “And then it was almost like a cap gun going off if you had a cap gun (next to you) and the cap popped — it was about that loud.” Woodward said he saw emergency response vehicles rushing to the scene He did not see which side of the road the car was crossing from where there is a slight incline on the road before the tracks “It’d probably be easier to stall going (west),” he said The accident temporarily closed the 400 West railroad crossings at 400 North and Center Street A resident who lives near the railroad tracks by the State Street crossing was unaware of the accident but said over 20 years ago a truck was hit by a train on the same tracks near his house and he always thought another collision would happen “(This) is evidence that it did happen again Lamb said he recalled being out in the yard with his children when he saw a truck get stuck on the tracks while trying to turn onto a dirt road as a train approached “I saw the train coming and I had my children with me so I said “So we ran to the back of the house and bam That train hit the truck and pushed it down the little dirt road that was next to the railroad tracks “We didn’t know if the truck was going to fly through the air or what It just kind of crumpled it and pushed it down that dirt road over there.” No injuries were reported in the accident Saturday night Get the best through celebrations A group of Springville filmmakers decided it was time to take the festivities to the silver screen, with a twist. We met up with Mike Buttino Jr. and Golden Groves of September Brother Productions at Joylan Theatre where they held the premiere. “Dyngus Day” is a folk-horror/comedy/slasher/holiday special Guy moves away from his small town (which is everything Dyngus Day) comes back home to find his long-lost love and then things take a turn “The mayor of the town decided he wanted to make sure that his village is known throughout the world “It has nothing to do with actual Dyngus Day,” said director Mike Buttino “A history and tradition which the movie digs into for maybe a minute But it has people talking about the holiday "Dyngus Day" got into a festival in Germany So their vision of bringing Dyngus Day to the world is coming to fruition Standing on the corner of Main Street and 200 South Central Bank has been a fixture of downtown Springville since it was built in 1892 a plan is in place to turn the aging structure back into its vintage self Central Bank announced a construction and revitalization project of its downtown bank fulfilling a long-held desire to rebuild the bank back into its 19th century form to be a pillar of the city “I’m ecstatic,” Central Bank President Mark Packard said “I’m really excited about being able to take a building back to the way that it looked back in 1892 It’s really a cool thing and we feel blessed to be able to do it.” The current bank remains the same structure as its original self; however modifications have rendered its appearance completely different An extensive remodel in the 1940s removed the dome off the top of the building replaced the brick exterior with ceramic tile and removed the rounded windows The main entrance was also moved away from the street corner The new structure will bring everything on the exterior back including brick and stone facing and a dome on the top The main entrance will be realigned with the street corner a portion of the sidewalk along both Main Street and 200 South will be uncovered and the bank will have window wells you can peer into from street level to see the basement floor The two structures were built at the same time and acted as sister buildings “We need to do it right and we try to do things right with whatever we do,” he said “We want to pay honor because those buildings back in the day took a lot of sacrifice to build because they were big buildings We want to make sure that those people that were involved are proud of what we put up.” The intricate stone carvings and masonry work of the original building was “just amazing,” Packard said is using old photos to count out how many individual bricks there were and tasking artists with drawing out the detailed stone carvings that were depicted on the building Those designs will then be recreated through 3D printers we learn how detailed the craftsmanship of that time was which was just phenomenal,” Central Bank Vice President Jeff Simonsen said “It’s more skilled individuals that built that stuff and today you can’t replicate it.” which will be carried out by Westland Construction a second building will be built west of the bank Ground will break on the second building in “two to three weeks,” Packard said the bank will move its operations into the new building The current building will then be deconstructed and rebuilt Both buildings will ultimately hold banking operations “All the people I have talked to are excited about the project,” Packard said “They’re excited to be able to see the historic nature see it brought back to the way it was originally.” SPRINGVILLE — Springville's downtown area will receive some sprucing up and an art makeover after the city was awarded the T-Mobile Hometown Grant The grant is a total of $49,000 that the city will use to install Art Loops: Downtown an interactive public art experience that connects the Springville Museum of Art the Springville Library and the Civic Center "It is a really exciting public art project a really innovative way to use public art to connect these different civic aspects in Springville," said Emily Larsen From large-scale sculptures and wall murals to small stamped poetry in the concrete and sidewalk games the art loops will display "all sorts of different public art" along the blocks of downtown between the buildings "The whole idea is there will be some really large-scale really impressive public art pieces and then a lot of little things that you'll discover along the way," she said The art loops will include installations and activities while fostering community connection and enhancing walkability Different areas will have thematic overlays to guide the design elements and aesthetics of the various sections There are three planned routes for different experiences: one for families and kids, one for a short urban adventure, and a third that is "ideal for the wanderers, history buffs, book worms, and anyone who wants a major dose of art and a long walk," the museum's website says A literary art walk will be installed between the museum and library on 100 East and a youth art section featuring children's artwork will cover 200 East A map of the art walking routes that will be part of Art Loops: Downtown in Springville (Photo: Springville Museum of Art)The first phase of Art Loops: Downtown will be made up of small projects throughout the loops that create density The first phase will be funded by the Hometown Grant with future phases needing to secure funding from other sources T-Mobile awards 25 grants to small towns with populations of 50,000 or less T-Mobile has given grants to 375 communities across the country people in communities nationwide are kickstarting projects that make a real difference and help their towns thrive," the company said in a release The city applied for the Hometown Grant in December and found out just recently it was chosen as a recipient "It's a really competitive national grant and so we feel really honored our project was chosen to receive the funding The mission of the grant goes hand in hand with what we are trying to do in Springville: creating a vibrant community that is connected and really embracing this small town feel that Springville has and making it a great place to live and to visit," Larsen said The art loops will strengthen Springville's identity as "Art City," and transform the downtown area into a "vibrant art-centered destination," Springville economic development specialist Carla Wiese said An artist rendition of a pop-up plaza that will be part of Art Loops: Downtown in Springville (Photo: Shalae Larsen)"This project will encourage cultural tourism support local businesses and provide residents with new opportunities for engagement with the arts It's an exciting step forward in realizing the potential of our downtown area and establishing a truly dynamic environment that celebrates art in all its forms," Wiese said the city is hosting a kick-off party for the first phase of the art loops at the Civic Center Park Gazebo Springville residents and visitors are all encouraged to come learn about and celebrate the project T-Mobile representatives will be presenting the grant check to the city "I strongly believe that this project will have a lasting positive impact on Springville's cultural landscape and will help to further establish Springville as a thriving hub for the arts," Wiese added The city and museum are already in the process of installing some of the artworks that will become part of Art Loops: Downtown Others will be implemented throughout the year before next February when the first phase officially opens Larsen said the Art Loops bring together the best of museums and public art and she is excited for everyone to be able to experience it "Taking what's so magical about the museum and this history of art in Springville and spreading it all out throughout the city and through downtown through this project is gonna be really exciting," Larsen "Citizen hero recognized the delay and assisted the occupant to swiftly escape the vehicle just before it was struck and carried 100 yards," the post said The department said the locomotive engineer quickly acted to give the occupant "enough time to escape the vehicle" by feathering five engine brakes The railway supervisor said "it is not normal to slow as fast and as safely as he did," according to the post "We discovered that even fire engine engineers have heroes Firefighters also thanked Springville police for their "swift action" in the rescue Police asked people to avoid the 400 West and Center Street railroad crossings while they investigate As he addressed the dozens of children sitting inside a barn watching a sheep get sheared Jim Jensen grabbed a handful of wool and inquired if anyone played baseball or softball the Spanish Fork sheep farmer told the crowd that wool makes up the inside of a baseball compressed it into his palm and let it reshape “This is the only natural fiber that goes back immediately to the exact same shape,” Jensen said it actually compresses or pushes on that wool it flips back out to where it’s perfectly round then it goes in a straight line and goes farther.” The role of sheep wool in America’s pastime was one of many lessons Utah County second graders learned at Farm Field Days at Harward Farms in Springville Tuesday afternoon The field trip is a semiannual activity put on by the Utah Farm Bureau with help from Future Farmers of America and Utah State University Extension that started in 1993 The springtime edition has occurred at Harward Farm for over 20 years will filter through the farm across four days to learn about the usefulness of agriculture north valley kids will experience the event at a different location believes it’s important to show kids the experience of life on the farm “There’s just a little bit of a disconnect,” he said and everybody kind of knew a farm or worked on a farm shows there are still operating farms in Utah and that it’s important to have local producers of beef and veggies and fruit and all that kind of thing.” kids rotated through 14 different stations offering different ag-related experiences There was a talking tomato discussing produce Kids petted goats and organizations presented how beef or honey is produced “Our mission statement is ‘Opening our minds to the miracle of agriculture,'” Utah County Farm Bureau President David Robbins said whether it starts from a seed or from a baby animal Offering such an informative experience requires a lot of preparation County Farm Bureau board members prepare six months in advance for the week finding presenters and setting up logistics A number of Utah State Extension workers and FFA kids from surrounding high schools volunteer to host the proceedings and direct the kids where children watch a sheep get a haircut then learn why a tomato is a fruit “There’s a lot of cool things that you can learn,” Robbins said Falling tree limbs in Birmingham kills one person (WBMA) — One man is dead and another man was detained after an altercation in Springville A heavy police presence could be seen early Monday morning around apartments on Forman Street According to Springville Police Chief Wayne Walton Walton wouldn't say whether the altercation took place inside or outside of the apartments and would not release any details about the altercation at this time He confirmed one man is deceased and another man was detained by police Walton said there is no danger to the community Walton would not initially comment on the manor of death due to the ongoing investigation Walton confirmed 47-year-old Adam Cornelius was arrested in connection to the incident Cornelius is charged with murder involving a gun Both men are reportedly residents of Springville Walton confirmed one of the men lived in the apartments Turner said he called 911 when he heard the altercation "My wife and I and my in laws were over here it was about 9 o'clock," Turner described "It was kinda alarming because we have a 15 day old baby providing a sense of relief in what is typically a quiet neighborhood "I felt once they showed up on scene everything was fine," said Turner Turner said he was shocked when he heard what happened "It makes me feel like nowhere is as safe as it seems the local law enforcement in Springville does a great job We will be up with the baby and we will see a police officer drive down the street so I know it's well taken care of in this area so I am not too worried about it It does alarm me a little bit knowing we've got little kids in here and my kids run around and play out here all the time fortunate enough this happened at night and not during the day so I didn't have to worry about them being out here."
