“This court finds that I have a duty to hear and decide matters that are assigned to me,” Stallings near the end of during Friday’s hearing
“I have no personal interest in this case
I do have an official interest in this case as the assigned judge
has failed to show that there was any attorney-client relationship that ever existed between myself and the Attorney General’s Office.”
In his motion filed April 21
Chaney said Stallings’ continued involvement in the criminal case would violate Chaney’s Sixth Amendment rights because she had been represented by the AG’s office when Stallings moved to quash a subpoena seeking her testimony in the disqualification motion brought by Harris in 2024
“Judge Stallings has a unique role in this case
a role that distinguishes her situation from others where a district judge faces a request to recuse from simply presiding over a jury trial,” wrote Gary Wood
Judge Stallings should not have engaged the prosecutor to defend her in this case
An appearance of judicial partiality understandably creates doubts in the minds of litigants and other members of the public.”
filed a similar motion to recuse Stallings in August 2024
arguing that she “exhibited a biased attitude in favor of the state and against Mr
Harris.” Stallings and Oklahoma County District Court Presiding Judge Richard Ogden each denied Harris’ motion
20 by the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals
The appellate court said Harris’ appeal was not filed within proper time parameters
State prosecutors from the AG’s office replied to Chaney’s motion on April 28, arguing the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals ordered “Stallings or her designated representative” to respond to the claims raised by Harris
Wood argued that the AG’s office illegally represented Stallings
“It says that [the Attorney General’s office] shall represent you only if
by the chief of the Supreme Court,” Wood said
“It doesn’t say ‘attorney-client relationship,’ it doesn’t say any of that
It says ‘represent,’ which is exactly what they did and exactly what the court admitted to
And the only reason they won’t admit to it is because they know it creates an assurance of impropriety and questions the impartiality.”
“Regardless of what this [transcript] says
the state has never represented this court in front of the Court of Criminal Appeals,” Hinsperger said
“We were the designee for this court.”
Stallings rejected Woods’ request to comment following Hinsperger’s final argument refuting Wood’s claims
Stallings explained it was the Court of Criminal Appeals that told her representative to respond to Harris’ motion to disqualify
insinuating that Wood may have been confused when she said Drummond represented her
As the designee to represent Stallings in her motion to quash the subpoena
the AG’s office responded to Harris’ motion
Wood seemed unappeased with Stallings’ reasoning
smiling and letting out a quiet chuckle during her final remarks
Wood said after the hearing that he thought Stallings failed to address the issue
“She still didn’t address what impartial minds — what reasonable minds — would find regarding her impartiality,” Wood said
“I think reasonable people would see that when she’s been represented by the Attorney General’s Office under whatever language they want to use — and is prohibited by statute — that she can’t be impartial in the case.”
With Brock’s motion to disqualify counsel pending, it is unclear when the stalled preliminary hearing to bind Harris and Chaney over for trial could resume
Chaney has five days to decide whether to appeal Stallings’ denial of his recusal motion

Not for a PGA Tour event but rather for the 129th Boston Marathon on Monday
You have to be kidding me!!!” Stallings began in his online post explaining the reason he opted to run the race
“Seems like the perfect way to celebrate my 40th birthday (in March) and raise some money for a great cause in the process.”
a 14-year Tour member with three victories to his credit
hasn’t teed it up in an event in over a year due to a torn labrum and multiple surgeries to his shoulder and elbow
He just began hitting balls again off a mat and hopes to return to the Tour (via a medical extension) for the FedEx Cup Fall
“I don’t know another time in my career where I’d have this chance to train properly and do this,” Stallings said
but is beginning with one of the majors in marathons along with 30,000 other participants
It’s the equivalent of a marathoner making his tournament debut at the Masters
which requires the stiffest time standard — proof of completing a marathon in no more than 2 hours 55 minutes for males ages 18-34 — but rather received a spot on the marathon team of Golf Fights Cancer
a non-profit that taps into the passion and generosity of golfers to raise much needed funds for cancer related organizations and families living with the disease
Founded by Boston natives Brian Oates and Jay Monahan
Golf Fights Cancer first launched at the Boston Marathon in 2004
with Oates and Monahan representing the organization
Travelers Championship tournament director Nathan Grube and Brian Oliver
the Tour’s executive vice president of corporate partnerships
have previously had Tour ties and run Boston with the Golf Fights Cancer team but this is a first for a player
“The idea of running in Boston is something I’ve always thought about,” said Stallings
Excuses wrapped up in anyway I could to justify not trying to make it happen.”
Stallings read the books "Do Hard Things" and “Endure” last fall
which inspired his decision to run his first marathon
“Both discuss aspects of training and embracing new challenges and breaking barriers,” Stallings wrote
“Throughout the books I was constantly putting myself in the place of the person in the story and immediately came to Boston.”
After he finished “Endure,” during an October family vacation to Kiawah Island
Stallings decided to challenge himself by doing an early morning half marathon the next day
He told her he was going to sign up for the Boston Marathon
Stallings’s wife rolled over; it was too early for a discussion
‘I think you’ve lost your mind,’” Stallings recounted
Stallings occasionally “ran angry” after bad rounds and averaged walking 100-miles a week during Tour events
having never participated in a race and deemed himself the equivalent of a 30 handicap before he joined a running club
When Monahan caught wind of Stallings’s personal goal
my dream always has been to have a Tour player run,’ ” Stallings recalled
Monahan and Korn Ferry Tour president Alex Baldwin took care of the rest so Stallings could become part of the 17-person Golf Fights Cancer marathon team
which has gone from raising $8,640 in 2009 to $825,000 in 2024
“If my husband can do this,” Baldwin told him
Added Monahan: “We’re going to love and support you as much as possible and it’s a huge opportunity to showcase something we love and believe in.”
‘Just don’t be a headline,’” Stallings said with a laugh
Stallings hopes to graduate to hitting balls off grass sometime soon and get back to work in the fall
which he calls “one of the greatest cities if not the greatest city in the world.” Family and friends will be on hand to cheer him on
His wife has created a bunch of signs to display across the race route
"I told you that this was a bad idea!" Asked to name his target time
Stallings says he’s trying not to be too competitive with himself and enjoy the moment
“I’ll be happy if I finish somewhere between the ambulance and the street sweeper,” he said

Lanning Wins 2025 Stallings Award01/29/25 | Football
GREENSBORO – North Carolina A&T measured itself against two of the nation's best NCAA collegiate bowling programs during the second day of the Aggies' Vernell Stallings Invitational held at AMF All-Star Lanes
the sixth-ranked team in the National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) poll faced off against the second-ranked and third-ranked teams in the same poll – Vanderbilt and Jacksonville State
It is safe to say that the Aggies acquitted themselves well in both matchups despite falling short in both
That could lead to the Aggies having confidence against the two national powers during the postseason
"One thing we did great today was remain level-headed and maintain our patience," said senior Chloe Newberry
"We are throwing good shots and just need to keep that up for tomorrow
We executed well but couldn't get the hits we needed."
The 12 teams assembled at AMF All-Star lanes played in traditional format on Saturday
with a two-day pinfall of 9,271 to average 185.4
A&T will go into Sunday's best-of-seven Baker format bracket play as the No
4 seed and will face the Jax State Gamecocks at 8:30 a.m
The Gamecocks continue to lead the tournament at 9-0 with a total pinfall of 10,212
The Vanderbilt Commodores are second at 8-1 with a total pinfall of 9,857
A&T had three individuals finish in the top 10 on Saturday led by senior Grace Stull's 1,015 total pinfall and 203.0 average, which placed her in seventh. Senior Maya Avilez and Newberry placed ninth with a 982 total pinfall and 196.40 average
Avilez's 200 total pinfall against Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) rival University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) propelled the Aggies to an 875-856 win over the 18th-ranked Hawks
Then came the two titanically matchups with Jax State and Vandy
the Gamecocks defeated the Aggies by a razor-thin 997-986
Annalise O'Bryant led three Gamecocks with a better than 200 pinfall
with Stull posting a 218 and Avilez scoring a 212
It took a tiebreaker to decide A&T versus Vandy
Both teams finished with pinfalls of 979, with the Commodores winning the tiebreaker 120-87. Victoria Varano led Vandy with a 229 total pinfall. Grace and graduate Melanie Katen led the Aggies by recording a 210 total pinfall
"I loved our resilience and grit," said Stull
"I feel confident that we learned enough to make improvements to set ourselves up to win tomorrow."
The Aggies had another close call against a MEAC rival as they returned to their winning ways with a 958-933 win over the Howard Bison
A&T's final matchup of the day did not end in a close call
A&T posted its highest total pinfall by defeating Southern 1,029-840 behind a strong showing from Katen
and Avilez closed with a 201 total pinfall

so Scott Stallings couldn’t quite see the big picture
Difficult to do with tens of thousands of runners blocking his view
“It was a little bit of chaos the first 2 or 3 miles,” laughed Stallings
“People were on top of you.”
But the 40-year-old PGA Tour veteran is definitely big picture
so he was true to his quality self when he didn’t sit quietly on the IR
His lengthy ordeal to recover from shoulder and elbow injuries in his left arm gladly pushed aside
Stallings deserves much praise for taking on the challenge of the April 21 Boston Marathon all in the name of charity
The layers to Stallings’ saga are quite flavorful
but let’s start with the mishap that sent him to the sidelines
Trying to hit a long and difficult shot out of a fairway bunker on No
He withdrew promptly and the news wasn’t good
“I tore the labrum and my bicep that connects to the (coracoid) process
that didn’t last long because when his doctor asked him how he felt and Stallings answered
“my hands are numb and I’m getting a tingling sensation,” an MRI entered the picture
The left elbow was an issue as the ulna nerve had been moved to the other side of the arm
“Definitely surprised,” said Stallings
but the nerve issue was a new to me.”
Scott Stallings crossed the finish line in the Boston Marathon
and the only disappointment he felt was that it was over
He loved it so much he didn't want it to end
The golf status is this: Stallings has been able to hit wedges off mats and the results have been promising
“The shoulder is fine,” he said
“and the numbness and tingling (in the hands) is gone
But we’ll move to grass this week and I’ll be on sort of a ‘pitch count.’ Think of the Tommy John program for a pitcher’s recovery process (where you focus on the number of throws
There’s no plan in place for his return to competition
Tough spot for a guy who is now entrenched in that 40-to-45 age bracket where the challenges are well documented but herein lies a good measure of dignity that Stallings brings to the table
Strong in body and even stronger in his faith
“I got my card when I was 24 and I have had a career I’m proud of,” said the man who has earned three PGA Tour wins and $18.7m in 355 tournaments across 13 seasons
I know I still have a lot to be thankful for and I’ve got a lot of fight in me.”
All you need to do is listen to how he made the decision to run in the 129th Boston Marathon to appreciate the will that drives him
just weeks after having surgery on his elbow when Stallings became inspired by the book he was reading,“Do Hard Things: Why We Get Resilience Wrong and the Surprising Science of Real Toughness.” Written by Steve Mangess
a coach to some of the top distance runners in the world the book explored “what toughness looks like and how to build it,” said Stallings
‘What could I do with this time I’ll never get back?’ ”
“I’m going to run the Boston Marathon.”
He concedes he was naïve as to what he was getting into and clueless about how to train
Stallings was passionate about his fitness
having whittled his 257-pound frame down to a tidy 200 thanks his commitment back in 2015-16
“That was never about golf fitness,” he said
This is what a nearly unbeatable team looks like -- those who ran for Team Golf Fights Cancer in the Boston Marathon
This year they helped generate a huge charity sum
run over 26.2 miles of pavement with plenty of hills
but I’m not strong and I’m definitely not a runner.”
there was a touch of fear running deep within his soul
roughly 20 miles from the starting line of the Boston Marathon in Hopkinton
he was not turning his back on the challenge
It’s the greatest race in the world.”
a charity called “Golf Fights Cancer.” It was started in 2003 by Jay Monahan and Brian Oates following the tragic death of a mutual friend
Crushed emotionally but enriched in humanitarian ways
they decided to run the Boston Marathon and raise funds
From such humble beginnings “Golf Fights Cancer” has become a force of nature
raising over $20m and contributing to more than 75 cancer-related charities with a focus on grants that make a direct and immediate impact on patient care
Oates has a day job, Executive Director of Sales with the New England Patriots. Monahan, of course, is Commissioner of the PGA Tour. Stallings appreciates what each man is dealing with at work – for Oates, the fund-raising machinery of the Boston Marathon comes to a climax just a few weeks before the NFL Draft; for Monahan
“let’s just say that he might have the weight of the world on his shoulders,” said Stallings
But what blew Stallings away is how they go behind the curtain of their public persona and give of themselves in incredible fashion to a charity that has helped so many
“The 'Golf Fights Cancer' ” team coached me and prepared me and they were incredible,” said Stallings
“And to know that Jay has this wonderful charity
If Stalling’s Boston Marathon experience could have been better, he’d love to know how. Easter Sunday, the day before the race, he went for a run along the Charles River under a glistening sun. There was breakfast on Newbury Street, then a game at Fenway Park to watch his beloved Red Sox. An Italian dinner in the North End? Check. Taking in Game 1 of the Celtics-Magic playoff series
A quintessential fun-packed day for a Boston devotee who makes his home in Knoxville
only what happened Monday moved his sports spirit to another level
took a sip of water “then turned to me and said
‘Let’s go for a run.’ ”
“Talk about quintessential New England,” laughed Stallings
This is what a nearly unbeatable team looks like -- those who ran for Team Golf Fights Cancer in the Boston Marathon
Running in his 29th Boston Marathon and 28th in a row
Oates moved along for a mile or two with Stallings
‘You can take off now,’ ” said the PGA Tour veteran
I didn’t want this training to create havoc with my elbow
and told her “I’m having the time of my life
While most run to finish as quickly as they can
Stallings ran “as slow as I could and still make it look like I was running.”
He stared at a “Boston Strong” billboard and got emotional when he watched a husband push his wife
Along Boylston Street the roars were thunderous
He spotted Jen at three different points – in Wellesley
19 seconds but if you count all the time he spent that evening reliving the joy and the sights and the sounds of his experience it went for hours longer than that
“I had all my toenails but no cramps
and there were no bathroom emergencies,” laughed Stallings
and the scene Tuesday at morning at Logan Airport put a nice little bow around the trip
The epilogue to his 2025 Boston Marathon run is still being written
The “Golf Fights Cancer” team has raised more than $600,000
but the fund-raising will go for a few more months
bib-for-bib we are the most efficient charity group in the race,” said Oates
though still on an emotional high from Boston
the more antsy I’ve become.”
Weeks after crossing the finish line after 26.2 miles
it sounds as if Stallings has another marathon in progress
The fight to get back into PGA Tour competition

Perhaps the more interesting question is this: Who will earn the backup spot
fans should expect a bit more intrigue at catcher
Bud Black’s tradition of relying on a veteran catcher remains unchanged; the questions surround the backup
If there were a surprise addition to the Colorado Rockies in 2024
it was the one-year signing of Jacob Stallings
It wasn’t that the Rockies had signed another veteran backup catcher — Black’s preference for veterans has long been clear
The surprise came in which Stallings bought to the team
In addition to wanting to see Romo at the MLB level
I suspect the Rockies felt that in Stallings
they had found their veteran catcher for 2025
Stallings had — by far — the best offensive season of his career
he topped off at a 91 OPS+ in 2020 and 2021
He also slugged a career-best nine home runs
Stallings was not especially notable behind the plate
but he showed an ability to block wild pitches and to mentor young catchers like Romo and Hunter Goodman
there was a lot to like in Stallings: his success in working with pitching staff
he would be a perfect transitional catcher as they Rockies waited to Romo to assume the starting job
In December, the organization announced it had agreed to a deal with Stallings for one year and $2 million
including a $2 million mutual option for 2026 and a $500,000 buyout
two players are in contention for the backup position coming out of spring training: Hunter Goodman (25) and Drew Romo (23)
Bud Black commented during spring training that he did not anticipate the team breaking camp with three catchers
adding that Goodman had been informed heading into the offseason the he should focus on improving his defense at the catcher position
There would be no more stints in the outfield or at first
Here’s how Goodman and Romo compared in 2024, according to FanGraphs:
an unfair comparison given that Goodman saw significantly more playing time than Romo did
The biggest difference in terms of offense is Goodman’s SLG — and his bat has always been his calling card
Spring training should see both Goodman and Romo getting significant playing time as the Rockies determine their backup. The other will report to Albuquerque to, presumably, work with Austin Nola and the Isotopes pitching staff
During the offseason, Nola signed an MiLB contract with the Rockies with in invitation to spring training. During the Bud Black years, the Rockies have liked having a veteran catcher in Triple-A both to work with pitching and catching prospects. He seems likely to assume that role in 2024. (Nola spent last year with the Kansas City Royals’ Triple-A team
slashing .174/.260/.298 over 191 plate appearances with.)
Willie MacIver is no longer with the organization and has moved on to The Athletics
Meanwhile, Braxton Fulford (No. 39 PuRP) is likely to find himself in limbo for a bit. He spent 2024 in Hartford as the primary catcher — and caught Chase Dollander’s first MLB outing against the San Francisco Giants
He slashed .242/.341/.412 with 10 HR (118 wRC+) and threw out 35% of base stealers (12 E and seven passed balls)
Fulford seems likely to begin the season in Hartford
Rockies 2024 draft choice Cole Messina (No. 27 PuRP) finished the season in High-A Spokane
slashing just .140/.232/.220 with a homer and a double in 56 plate appearances
He is a bat-first catcher with significant questions behind the plate who looks to spend 2025 continuing at Spokane
Bryant Betancourt (No. T-54 PuRP) has split his time between catching and first base though the Rockies have used him more at first and he seems unlikely to be an impact catcher
It’s worth pointing out that Cole Carrigg (No. 10 PuRP) is a true utility player
but it seems unlikely he will continue to do so other than an occasional stint as an emergency catcher
Other options include Daniel Cope (2023-2024 in Albuquerque), Ronaiker Palma (2024 in Hartford), Alan Espinal, Darius Perry (2024 in Fresno)
so much depends upon the player development of Drew Romo and
whether Cole Messina can be an MLB-caliber catcher
Like much of the don’t-call-it-a-rebuild rebuilding Rockies
fans should know more by the end of the season
High-tech program helps Stallings see the lightJanuary 22nd

After signing with the Rockies before the 2024 season
Stallings learned that the problem was his eyes
but they weren’t giving him the perfect picture of pitches
hired last season by Rockies hitting coach Hensley Meulens as a certified visual performance consultant to enhance players’ efficiency in tracking the baseball
The two collaborated when Meulens was hitting coach for the three-time World Series champion Giants
Harrison quickly went deeper than Stallings’ eyes
and my right eye would flutter when I was trying to track a fast-moving object,” Stallings said
He asked how the last couple years had gone for me offensively
The stats held the answer. After seeing three straight years of OPS readings better than .700 with increased playing time with the Pirates, Stallings was traded to the Marlins
He dipped to .584 in ‘22 and .565 in ‘23 before the Marlins non-tendered him
Harrison -- whose SlowTheGameDown Elite Visual Performance company has extensive experience with teams and individual athletes -- worked to restore the puzzle piece that Stallings didn’t know was missing
“I’ve been doing this a long time with baseball players
and catchers have always been interested in what we do,” Harrison said
“A lot of it has to deal with the bangs to the head
Visual dysfunction tends to happen with a lot of what I call whiplash kind of concussions
Harrison would position himself behind the batting cage and make quiet observations
But he did the real work inside by obtaining and comparing data
using high-tech and high-level training methods and teaching tactical strategies
Stallings described his process so that many with not-so-gifted peepers (reporter’s hand raised) can understand
“You've probably gotten an eye test before -- you know
they put your chin on a little thing and look into your eyes,” Stallings said
I had this contraption and he has a computer screen
and there is a camera that tracks your eyes
The sensor is able to see how I’m able to stay with objects
“It’s a pretty high-tech program … I probably didn’t do it much justice in the explanation.”
Just know this: Your optometrist is not looking for what Harrison seeks
Harrison has spent his life in visual performance
an optometrist -- first approached ownership of the expansion Royals in the late 1960s
then was given their blessing in the early 1970s
the famed Royals Baseball Academy swore by his work
and eventual Hall of Famer George Brett was an early disciple
Ryan Harrison’s athletic feats were with his
He was a kicker at the University of California at Davis
and he learned the eye component from his father
Harrison was a consultant for the Giants, Blue Jays and Phillies in past years. Last season, he evaluated Kiké Hernández of the World Series champion Dodgers
Hernández started wearing glasses after the All-Star break
and went from being one of baseball’s poorest hitters over an extended period (.171 average in the first half) to a force (.274 in the second half)
Of course, Harrison freely says that visual training is a component, not a miracle cure. Stallings was a success story and, according to Harrison, Charlie Blackmon in his final season of 2024 was No. 1 in visual skills. But for the Rockies and their lineup of largely inexperienced hitters, many with a tendency to swing big, strikeouts persisted
Sign up to receive our daily Morning Lineup to stay in the know about the latest trending topics around Major League Baseball
The fascinating part of Harrison’s specialty is that while elite hitters often have 20/15 vision -- greater than the familiar 20/20 standard -- visual clarity is not the be all and end all
“There are seven muscles in each eye -- 14 total -- and 12 are involved in tracking,” Harrison said
“The seventh muscle in each eye is for what we call accommodation -- far and near
Dynamic depth perception -- which is the ball moving in space
An interesting note was that Stallings' visual clarity -- which determines whether one needs vision correction -- was fine
Harrison found the aforementioned eye muscles were strong
“They were just out of alignment,” Harrison said
“We were in a sense doing physical therapy or athletic training
you’ve got to do your movements until you’re running sprints again.”
involved using “bifocal things called flippers,” adjustable blurring lenses to increase difficulty and tracking small objects
he [Harrison] came back in Spring Training,” Stallings said
and I tested as one of the best guys in all of camp.”
The results showed it. Stallings posted career full-season bests with a .263 batting average, .357 on-base percentage, .453 slugging percentage and nine home runs while appearing in 82 games. The performance was good enough to earn him a new one-year, $2.5 million guarantee with a 2026 option
Stallings will work to keep his outlook bright
GREENSBORO – The North Carolina A&T bowling is hosting the Vernell Stallings Invitational at AMF All-Star Lanes in front of a fun
The Invitational includes perennial national power in second-ranked Vanderbilt and reigning national champion and third-ranked Jacksonville State
The sixth-ranked team in the National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) poll
the A&T Aggies did not get off to the start they wanted at the Stallings Invite
A&T totaled 4,682 pins to place fourth after the first day
Jacksonville State leads the invitational by going 5-0 with a 5,090 total pinfall
"Today, we started off a little slow, but we had a major comeback," said graduate Melanie Katen
"We eventually were able to figure out how to play the lanes better and now have a better idea on how to attack the lanes tomorrow."

Stallings returns to Rockies on deal with option for '26November 20th
DENVER – Hoping to build on a bounce-back 2024 season, catcher Jacob Stallings on Wednesday re-signed with the Rockies on a one-year contract that includes a mutual option for 2026
while the option is worth $2 million and carries a $500,000 buyout
The club hasn't confirmed the value of the deal
set full-season career highs in batting (.263)
OPS (.810) and home runs (nine) in essentially 50 percent of the playing time at the position
Brought in to share time with veteran Elias Díaz in ‘24, Stallings will catch in tandem with a younger partner in ‘25. Hunter Goodman, a rookie last year, and Rockies No. 8 prospect Drew Romo received playing time in 2024
mostly after Díaz was released in mid-August (he finished the season with the Padres)
Willie MacIver and Braxton Fulford will be vying to make their Major League debuts
A Gold Glove winner with the Pirates in 2021
Stallings has embraced catching in a shared role
Stallings turned down a mutual option after the season
“The familiarity of knowing the guys and knowing the coaches and knowing the front office like that was a huge factor
“I would love to build on the offensive success that I had
and it really helped take that next step forward
It showed in our play toward the end of the year.”
Stallings also upheld his defensive reputation by throwing out a career-high 12 runners attempting to steal – 12th most among NL catchers

Wiggins was born in Gates County on October 15
She was the daughter of the late Thomas Judson Stallings and Eva Ward Stallings
She was a lifelong member of Sandy Cross Baptist Church
she was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years
Maxine reveled in the history of her family and her community
were partners in the pursuit of genealogical research and up until very recently
she could hold forth extensively on the familial relationships of everyone in the community
the history of the community and the history of her church
To take a ride with her in Gates County was tantamount to a travelogue experience
Maxine was a force of nature and fiercely independent
Last summer she cut her own grass on a riding lawn mower (and drove it down the road and up a lane to cut the grass at the Wiggins homeplace)
drove to Elizabeth City to do her grocery shopping
visited with her daughter and her family and only accepted ‘help’ with great reluctance
(We can debate whether having her on the road in the last few years was a good idea but nonetheless she was.) Regardless of the context
“I don’t need help yet” was a constant refrain
writing something or just simply planning what was next
Dena and her family would like to express their sincere appreciation to her medical team
It was Maxine’s fervent wish to stay out of the hospital and to receive care in her own home
We owe an enormous debt of gratitude to her extraordinary caregivers led by Lottie Rogers and including Sheila Stallings
Vanessa Butler and Elean Perry who took care of her in the last few months with unfailing kindness
the assistance of the team from Albemarle Hospice
she would not have been able to achieve her wish of staying at home
We are at peace knowing that her final days were lived
We are forever in the debt of those who made her wishes a reality

Stallings played himself into the starting job — and a new contract
You’re reading the 2024 edition of Ranking the Rockies
where we take a look back at the season had by every player to play for the Rockies in 2024
The purpose of this list is to provide a snapshot of the player in context
The “Ranking” is an organizing principle that’s drawn from Baseball Reference’s WAR (rWAR)
We’ll begin with the player with the least amount of rWAR and end up with the player with the most
which was consistent with everything Brown and Kratz described in their book
the guy who was not quite good enough to be the starting catcher
So are construction sites and insurance firms and high school coaching staffs and wherever glory days are warmed and served with cold beer
also the guy who can be trusted with the fragile parts of a team
When the wins come and the championships follow
When the season is lost and the sun seems two feet closer than it should be and nobody really wants to be doing this
Because backup catchers also strain to hit .210
because if they hit .250 they wouldn’t be backup catchers.”
Jacob Stallings found another gear in his approach to the plate
ultimately lifting himself out of the backup catcher job and into the starting role
The Colorado Rockies signed Stallings back on January 5, 2023. Of the move, Evan Lang wrote
Stallings has turned in strong defensive showings throughout most of his career, culminating in a 2021 campaign during which he was worth 21 defensive runs saved and won a Gold Glove. He’s an excellent blocker, consistently in the upper percentile for blocks above average per Baseball Savant
Stallings also owns the MLB record for consecutive games without a passed ball
During his time with the Pirates he was consistently recorded as a strong pitch framer
though admittedly those metrics took a big hit during his time in Miami
Stallings was not exceptional at throwing runners out
a backup catcher is defined by an ability to work with pitchers and young players while helping keep a team on track when things get hard
The deal was a one-year contract for $1.5 million with a mutual option for 2025
Stallings’ job was clear: Back-up Elias Díaz and work with a young catching staff that would include Hunter Goodman and Drew Romo
First consider these Baseball Reference numbers from all seasons (with a 2020 caveat) in which Stallings appeared in at least 50 games
Stallings had — by far — his best offensive season
He more than doubled his 2023 OPS+ with the Miami Marlins.)
Also worth noting is that Stallings did not benefit from Coors Field
His home OPS+ was 121 while his away OPS+ was 136
he discussed changes he’d made to his approach at the plate
based on suggestions from Rockies hitting coach Hensley Meulens
“I tried to short my swing a lot this offseason
worked really hard on that,” Stallings said
“Bam has known Ryan Harrison [a sports vision specialist] for a long time and brought him in in spring
but he just gave me some exercises and stuff to do
So I do them about five times a week and I feel like they’ve really helped.”
Both the data and the eye test indicate Stallings’ adjustments worked
Stallings caught 603.2 innings with seven errors
which ties him for fourth among catchers who’ve caught at least 100 innings
(Drew Romo had two and Hunter Goodman -3.) His FRV was also below replacement-level
he ranked 52nd (-7 in Catcher Framing Runs) and 42.7% in Strike Rate
His Catcher’s Caught Stealing Above Average was -2
he tied for fourth with Adley Rutschman in Blocks Above Average (10)
Stallings was not remarkable behind the plate
both with an inexperienced pitching staff and while playing at elevation
Stallings was eager to work with young catchers
stressing the importance of helping them learn game planning
I was completely overwhelmed with it,” Stallings said
kind of figuring out a routine of what works for you and what helps you retain the information but not beyond information overload
His work with the Rockies pitching staff was equally notable, as Ryan Feltner has pointed out
The Stallings signing was one of those Rockies deals in which the player surpassed team expectations
Last week, the Rockies announced they had agreed to a deal with Stallings for one year and $2 million
It’s difficult to imagine a happier ending for a back-up catcher

– Scott Stallings is carrying a golf bag this week at PGA Tour Q-School on his right shoulder for good reason
The 39-year-old three-time Tour winner has been sidelined since late March when he withdrew from the Texas Children’s Houston Open due to a left shoulder injury
He underwent surgeries on his left bicep and labrum six months ago
posting a photo on Instagram from the hospital that said
“All the surgeries are over,” he said on Friday with a sigh of relief
Stallings hopes to begin chipping and putting in January and to be cleared to play and practice by April
His goal is to return to the Tour in the fall
helped out with the University of Tennessee golf program and enjoyed taking his kids to school
“I’ve been playing the Tour for the last 14 years so it’s been a nice break,” he said
One thing he doesn’t miss is grinding for a card at Q-School
So why is he here and working as a caddie this week
“He’s one of our kids,” he said of Jake Hall
who played in the Scott Stallings Junior Cup in Nashville on three occasions
Stallings has been a big supporter of junior golf in his home state and started the Scott Stallings Kids Play Free Initiative with the support of the Tennessee Golf Foundation
Hall is one of 11 golfers to advance to final stage from a pre-qualifier and has earned at least conditional status on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2025
"We’ve known each other since I was back in high school
I’ve spent a ton of time with him over the past four-five years just practicing and stuff," Hall said in a video posted to the Korn Ferry Tour social media account
"I’d say over the past two years our relationship got pretty tight
It didn’t take too much convincing to get him out here this week
Hall opened with a 2-over 72 at Dye’s Valley on Thursday but Friday he ballooned to an 80 at Sawgrass Country Club
“He made this place play as hard as it could,” said Stallings on a day where Hall
“It’s OK to make a bad stroke but you can’t make two in a row.”
“I don’t know if I want to hug you or punch you in the face.”
But there are two days to go and Stallings will be lugging Hall’s bag with his one good arm

set full-season career highs with Colorado last season when he hit .263 with nine homers and a slugging percentage of .453
Stallings was taken in the seventh round of the 2012 amateur draft by Pittsburgh after playing at North Carolina. He's appeared in 534 career games over nine seasons with the Pirates, Miami Marlins and Rockies

Feltner focusing on trust in his pitches with help from StallingsMarch 30th
TAMPA -- Rockies right-handed pitcher Ryan Feltner had too many good pitches to be thinking so much. His career began taking off during the second half of last season, when he turned the thinking over to veteran catcher Jacob Stallings
The stuff of Feltner and the brains of Stallings were tested in the first inning Sunday afternoon
The Rays began with three hits -- including Yandy Díaz’s double on the game’s first pitch and Brandon Lowe’s two-run homer on the first pitch of his one-out at-bat -- plus a walk in the first five batters
But after Feltner hosted a mound meeting with Stallings and pitching coach Darryl Scott, he retired the next 11 batters and didn’t give up any more runs in his five innings. On balance, Feltner carried his strong second-half performance of last year into his first start of 2025
“My goal for the first inning was to get ahead and challenge them,” Feltner said
“And their goal was to swing at those first pitches
“We realized that pretty quick and started them off on the changeup after that
We figured out what their game plan was and were able to move forward.”
The Rockies erased the deficit, but a defense that was so airtight during Saturday’s victory leaked during the Rays’ four-run sixth inning, and the Rockies lost, 6-4
Steinbrenner Field in the deciding game of the three-game season-opening series
A fourth-round MLB Draft pick out of Ohio State in 2018
although his career took a pause after he was hit in the head by a line drive in 2023
he had the same lively fastball plus a full complement of off-speed pitches
he was not making key pitches and was accused of overthinking
The pairing with Stallings helped. Stallings caught 19 of Feltner’s 30 starts last year. Three times, the two worked together for four straight games. Within that period, Stallings suggested Feltner add a sweeper
which brought his selection of pitches to six
With Feltner trusting Stallings to call the right one
he posted a 2.98 ERA through the final 15 starts of last season
Sunday’s mound visit was a chance to assess what was happening
The Rays had not been as aggressive the previous two games
“It’s the old cat-and-mouse game where you don’t want to over-adjust
or adjust if they’re not adjusting,” Feltner said
“It’s satisfying for sure to know that you were right and see the process through.”
was thinking more of the pitcher than the pitch call
[Feltner's head space] might have been pretty bad
With the changeup the pitch that pulled him back into the game
Feltner finished his five innings with five strikeouts against two runs
he settled in,” Rockies manager Bud Black said
I thought he had good use of the changeup today against their heavy left-handed-hitting lineup
Feltner believes he can be a part of the Rockies becoming competitive
“We had a lot of close games last year,” Feltner said
It’s just about pulling out those small victories
Home » RISE Center Integral Part of Stallings Legacy
The life and legacy of former Alabama head football coach Gene Stallings is hitting the big screen through a documentary titled
“Do Right: The Stallings Standard,” set to debut Sept
The film tells the story of Stallings’ career on and off the gridiron and his lasting efforts to help others
A glowing example of Stallings’ impact is through the support of the RISE Center on the UA campus
The Stallings family’s advocacy for the RISE Center
a nationally recognized early childhood education program that serves young children with varying abilities and traditional learners
was born with Down syndrome and a heart defect
associate professor in the department of journalism and creative media
associate professor and chair of the department of journalism and creative media
Clark says the film shows how Stallings’ leadership and advocacy set an example for other coaches and philanthropists to help families who faced the same issues as his family
“When Coach Stallings and his family came to UA in 1990 and learned about the RISE Center
they started advocating to have a better facility for the children along with the director and other teachers and administrators,” said Clark
then eventually a national championship coach
gave him the opportunity to advocate even more for individuals of all ages with varying abilities
“John Mark worked at the RISE Center as an adult
but his family used the model of RISE to share the success with others to help thousands of families know there were resources to help them starting from birth through pre-K and then through adulthood.”
The documentary includes stories of Stallings’ positive influence from former players and colleagues
Bruce hopes viewers will leave with an understanding of how their individual choices and example can make a difference and never give up
but we learned that documentary stories have a life of their own,” said Bruce
“This story has evolved in ways we never could have imagined when we first started the project
“We also learned that to truly focus on a subject as dynamic
you must form great relationships with partners and interview subjects around the country because his impact and advocacy has major ripple effects into communities nationwide.”
A portion of the proceeds from the documentary screening events will benefit the RISE Center

More to come from Stallings in '25 after his strong '24?September 12th
DETROIT – All discussions about Rockies veteran catcher Jacob Stallings begin with his pitch-calling, even if the subject is legitimately something else -- like the two key doubles he delivered in Thursday’s 4-2 victory over the Tigers
and a great job behind the plate,” manager Bud Black said when asked about the hits
after saying a baseball from his first career win -- courtesy of a hard-throwing
no-fuss eighth inning -- would go into his father’s extensive collection of key moments
just the experience and ability that he has makes it great to be able to throw to him,” Halvorsen said
it was his second impressive start on the Rockies’ 4-5 road trip
Feltner -- who gave up just three hits in 5 2/3 innings in the series finale -- said working with Stallings lessens his tendency to overthink in key areas
“I would like to point out that the only times I’ve given up runs the past two games have been pitches that I’ve shaken [off of],” Feltner said
it was the [Spencer] Torkleson curveball [a two-run double in the fourth].”
for all the praise of his back-stop abilities
Stallings’ one-out double off reliever Brenan Hanifee in the seventh inning set up Charlie Blackmon’s game-tying infield single
after Brendan Rodgers’ single off Jason Foley
Stallings’ hit to right field took a bounce that eluded Matt Vierling and became the go-ahead RBI double
Nolan Jones replaced Stallings as a pinch-hitter and scored on Jake Cave’s sacrifice fly
Stallings is batting .260 with eight home runs and 34 RBIs in 74 games this season -- a dramatic improvement from last year with the Marlins
when he hit .191 with three homers and 20 RBIs in 88 games
Others are quick to compliment the rest of Stallings’ game
who entered Thursday 1-for-7 on the road trip
has learned to give his own hitting the same grace
I try to keep perspective: ‘Did I execute my plan
Did the pitcher just make good pitches on me?’ I’ve been a little nicer to myself in that regard
There have been some days where the pitcher just beats me or I’ve beat myself
Will Stallings continue the two-way growth in a Rockies uniform
The Rockies went bargain hunting for an experienced backstop to share time with 2023 All-Star Game Most Valuable Player Elias Díaz
who won a Gold Glove with the Pirates in 2021 but was looking to regain his footing
There is a mutual option for a $1.5 million salary next year
The contract is structured so there is room for further negotiation at the end of the season
The Rockies released Díaz in August to clear room for the club’s No. 8 prospect Drew Romo
who is primarily a catcher -- although he started in right field on Thursday
One roster scenario for 2025 is Romo and Goodman competing for one spot
Stallings doesn’t mind sharing a clubhouse with both on the September expanded roster
“It’s just helping them understand that the struggles of the big leagues are going to come
whether it’s behind the plate or at the plate
and the guys who are most consistent are most consistent mentally,” Stallings said
“When I first got called up I was completely overwhelmed
They’re 23 and 24 [years old] -- and Romo just turned 23.”
Another could be to bring in another veteran to pair with Stallings
Stallings has a solid two-way year on his baseball card
everybody has been so good to me and helped me feel really confident in myself,” Stallings said
“Those guys gave me a chance this year when I wasn’t sure [that] I was going to get a big league deal.”
