business owners thought it would drive away all their customers
hasn’t ruined local businesses as expected
it’s caused a different problem – traffic accidents
According to the Bradford County Sheriff’s Office
the roughly six-mile stretch that runs from Jacksonville to Sarasota and passes right through the center of town is responsible for the most traffic accidents in the entire county
BCSO said there have been 281 crashes on the bypass
mostly in the south intersection where it reconnects with the original highway
According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles crash dashboard
Bradford County experienced 1,496 total crashes between September 2019 when the bypass was built and December 2024
This means the route accounted for 18.8% of all crashes in the county
The north and south intersections take up most of the sheriff’s department’s time
He said the layout of the southbound intersection poses unique challenges to drivers
you’re kind of in a curve coming into the intersection
to see that change where you’re coming into an intersection.”
Smith said monthly meetings between the Florida Department of Transportation
the sheriff’s office and Florida Highway Patrol about the rate of accidents have yielded little result
but there's still quite a few,” Smith said
FDOT spokesperson Tracy Hisler-Pace said in an email statement to WUFT the department has several safety improvement projects occurring on the bypass
including adding more lighting on the off-ramps of State Road 100 and State Road 16 and “advanced warning beacons” at the south intersection of the truck route
Hisler-Pace also said in the email that the crash data provided by BCSO differs from records in Florida's official state crash database
Hisler-Pace said the database can yield different results
Crashes in intersections are often categorized differently than crashes on a roadway
which can lead to confusion when pulling records
Smith said BCSO pulled crash data from the beginning of one intersection to the end of the other intersection when coming up with the number of crashes
local business owners’ original fears of the bypass driving away customers haven’t panned out as expected
301 cuts across the state between two major metropolitan areas
Starke Mayor Andy Redding said large semi trucks used to drive straight through town
often staying in the left lane and blocking local drivers
“So you have people continually trying to divert and get around that traffic,” Redding said
“We do not have that type of congestion now.”
The main fear when the bypass was built was that local businesses would lose customers driving through the town who stop to eat or shop on their way
But Redding said those fears haven’t come to fruition
If you are someone passing through and it's congested
it takes you 20 minutes to go a couple miles
you're not going to want to stay around,” Redding said
“Those individuals are not the ones staying here actually doing commerce in Starke.”
who owns Grannie’s Country Cookin’ Restaurant located on 301
said the semi-truck traffic going through town used to be the worst
“ I called it Hell's Highway,” Snider said
“And I didn't drive on it unless I had to.”
Snider said traffic on the highway has eased a lot
“ They put the bypass in and I thought I would lose a lot of my business
but it helped my business because it opened up 301 from all the trucks
and people could turn and get in here now,” Snider said
Snider said the people of Starke are sometimes slow to accept change
“ The older people don't like it too good,” she said
to open up this restaurant and I have a grandchild who's growing up here
Whether or not the town of Starke continues to change
residents say they’ll always hold on to the small-town charm that brought them there

(WSBT) — An alleged misuse of nearly $20,000 of your taxpayer dollars in county funds from the Starke County Sheriff’s Department is under investigation
That’s what the Indiana State Board of Accounts claimed in their own special investigation
The repercussions of this alleged misuse could cost the county even more money
Former Starke County Sheriff Bill Dulin and former Jail Matron Pamela McDonald are at the center of these allegations
McDonald has been accused of multiple instances of misusing county funds since 2019
this could end up costing the county more than $60,000
That’s when the Indiana State Board of Accounts received a formal complaint
The report outlines various unauthorized expenditures
including payments made through Amazon and PayPal
The State Board of Accounts findings were just released this past Summer
Starke County Attorney Justin Schramm gave WSBT 22 this statement
“The Starke County Council and Board of Commissioners were made aware of the findings of the State Board of Accounts Special Investigation Report in July of this year
This report identified areas where the County's internal controls were ineffective to prevent the mismanagement of County funds
The Council and Board of Commissioners have implemented new internal controls to prevent any recurrence
as safeguarding taxpayer dollars is of paramount importance to County officials
for his efforts in remedying past delinquencies
We remain steadfast in our efforts to improve in the areas identified in the Special Report
Any criminal proceedings will be referred to the Indiana State Police
the Indiana Attorney General's Office
and other outside agencies for further action.”
According to documents from the State Board of Accounts
Jail Matron from May 2018 until she was fired in May 2023
was responsible for reconciling bank accounts and managing the Commissary Fund
she allegedly used the Sheriff’s Amazon account to order a gaming recliner
McDonald claimed it was an accident and that she informed then County Auditor Rachel Oesterreich not to use county funds
but investigators found no record of her repayment
WSBT emailed and left a voicemail to former auditor Oesterreich who is now the Superintendent of the Starke County Highway Department to discuss the report
McDonald submitted 75 invoices for more than $33,000 in vehicle repairs at Sideline Automotive
17 disbursements totaling more than $18,000 were recorded in both the Commissary ledger and sent to the County Auditor for payment
But only two matched the original invoices
Investigators found the invoices were used to conceal transfers from the Commissary Fund to McDonald’s PayPal account
with 19 withdrawals totaling more than $20,000
her PayPal transactions exceeded the Commissary disbursements by over $2,200
But McDonald isn't the only person under scrutiny
The investigation found that $675 from the Commissary Fund was used to pay registration fees for non-employees to attend the 2022 Indiana Sheriffs Association Conference in French Lick
Those registrations were for the spouses of former Sheriff Bill Dulin
An additional $488 was used to cover conference costs for Dulin’s and Noolan’s spouses to attend the National Sheriffs Association Conference in Kansas City that same year
We tried to ask the former sheriff about this spending
WSBT sat down and talked with current Starke County Sheriff Jack Rosa to talk about the report and to see if any changes have been made in the Sheriff’s department
We also asked if there were any changes made within the department
we have a lot of tighter internal controls right now
everything that we spend we talk about it as a group," says (R) Starke County Sheriff Jack Rosa
The report also includes instances of an excess salary and selling products made by inmates
WSBT reached out to County Prosecutor Leslie Baker and even showed up to her office on November 20 to see if either Sheriff Dulin or Pamela McDonald paid back any of the alleged misused funds
but Starke County Attorney Justin Shramm informed us that any criminal proceedings will be referred to the Indiana State Police
and other outside agencies for further action
(WSBT) — A home in Starke County was defaced with a word tied to hate
woke up to find his home had been vandalized
the word 'Nazi' was spray-painted on his garage door
Bailey says he believes he was targeted for being a Trump supporter
"They wrote the word 'Nazi' and that’s what people are calling Trump supporters
traitors or Nazis and all kinds of other names
and I think that’s why we were singled out for that vandalism," said James Bailey
Bailey says the flag has been flying for a while without any issues
it was given to me and I put the flag of the same day I got it flying ever since
and I’ve had several people comment on the flag
but never anything negative nothing until this," said Bailey
The Trump flag has now been replaced with an American flag
The couple said they believe no one should be targeted for who they voted for
The hateful message is now painted over as the Baileys are ready to move on
The couple says their community has been there for them
and they hope this doesn't happen to anyone else
Now the homeowners and police are searching for whoever is responsible
If you have any information about the incident, contact the Starke County Sheriff's Office.

(WSBT) — An investigation is underway after a man was found dead during a welfare check in Starke County
Police were called to a home Friday evening on Donna Street in the unincorporated area of North Judson after a man had not been heard from since December 3

(WSBT) — A Starke County man admitted to police he shot and killed his father
who was later found dead during a welfare check last week
This is according to court documents obtained by WSBT 22 News
The Starke County Sheriff's Office received a call on December 4 requesting a welfare check on Landin Minix
When officers arrived to the home on Donna Street
they smelled a strong natural gas smell and had the fire department turn off the gas line before entering
This is when they discovered Landin dead in a recliner with gunshot wounds to the head and a revolver laying under his hand
Police say none of the bullets in the revolver had been discharged
and it appeared his body had been moved and blood was attempted to be cleaned up
out of the house along with Timothy's girlfriend just a few days beforehand
Police took Timothy into custody on December 7
Court documents say she told police Timothy had been acting erratically since the night she last saw Landin
She also told investigators she drove him to a pawn shop in Warsaw to try and pawn a pistol for extra money
but the sale was unsuccessful because he did not have an I.D
Timothy admitted to police while he was interviewed that he shot Landin with one of his own revolvers no more than four times during a very recent fight
He said he then placed another one of his dad's revolvers under Landin's hand to make police think his death was a suicide
and then he cut the gas line to the stove in hopes the house would burn down
that he took valuables from the home and disposed of the revolver used in the crime in a wooded area near 800 South
He then took police to the location where he ditched the gun
Timothy Minix was taken to the Starke County Jail and faces several counts including two counts of Murder
