He purchased the ferry with Pete Davidson and Paul Italia in 2022
Colin Jost's hilarious SNL sketch just lifted the lid on his plans for his Staten Island ferry
featured in a recent Saturday Night Live sketch from the May 3 episode where he regretted his big purchase
titled "Ferry Altercation," also featured host Quinta Brunson
revolving around two angry drivers insulting each other with exaggerated hand gestures after a parking issue on a ferry
also starred as Day’s daughter and car passenger
Jost participated at the end of the skit when Day said the aggressive encounter left him upset because he usually "loves the ferry," to which the Weekend Update co-host appeared from the passenger side of the car with his hands against the window as he peered inside
would you like to buy one?" Fineman then gasped and said
by teaming up with former SNL cast member Davidson and The Stand comedy club owner Paul Italia
Both Jost and Davidson were born in Staten Island
The comedian previously made a cameo on the January 22 broadcast of Today with Jenna & Friends
she jokingly suggested he should sell the ferry
"All I can say is if anybody out there would like to start a GoFundMe for the Staten Island Ferry
"I don’t know if I’m speaking for the Staten Island Ferry or against it
This has now become a telethon for Support the Staten Island Ferry."
telling viewers that it will eventually bring in the big bucks
Jost told People Magazine that his ferry purchase was not his smartest move

Staten Island’s newest City Council member
is outlining what's ahead after winning last week’s special election to represent the borough’s south shore in the 51st District
The longtime radio host turned politician joined “Mornings On 1” Monday to reflect on his victory and discuss priorities as he fills the seat left vacant by fellow Republican Joe Borelli
who hosted shows on AM 970 and 770 WABC before entering politics
said his background in radio prepared him well
you're expected to know everything about everything,” Morano said
“A caller calls in and wants to know about tariffs or North Korea or pens or apples
A constituent has to ask you about why their block doesn't have a stop sign or policing
one of only a handful of Republicans in the overwhelmingly Democratic City Council
vowed to address everyday quality-of-life problems that he feels should not be partisan issues
“As [Mayor Fiorello] LaGuardia used to say
there's no Republican or Democratic way to clean the street,” he said
“There's no Republican or Democratic way to fill a pothole or to get the streets cleaned when there's snow on the ground … that's ultimately what I think my constituents are most interested in — getting their fair share of city services efficiently
Morano said he is focused on blocking a planned four-story transient hotel in his district
calling the developer “very irresponsible” and saying the community fears it could become a homeless shelter
“Killing that project and ideally facilitating the sale from this developer to a more responsible developer

New York City Council’s Republican Caucus is six members strong again
Republican radio host Frank Morano emerged victorious in Tuesday night’s New York City Council District 51 special election to fill the South Shore Staten Island seat left vacant by former Council Minority Leader Joe Borelli
Morano held a commanding lead over two other candidates
with 59% of the vote and 99% of scanners reporting
a conservative Democrat who logged roughly 21% of the vote
a Republican and the son of Staten Island Borough President Vito Fossella
Special elections are nonpartisan – Morano ran on a “SI Patriotism” line
while Hagen ran on a “Common Ground” line and Fossella ran on a “We the People” line
Morano hosts a radio show on 77WABC and previously served as a part-time staffer in Borelli’s office. Morano was backed by Borelli as well as by Rep
Borelli left the council in late January to take a lobbying job with Chartwell Strategy Group
He would have been term-limited at the end of this year
Morano will remain in the council until the end of the year
But he will have to win again in the June primary (if there is one) and November general election to be elected for a full term starting in January
The three special election candidates are currently planning to run in their respective primaries in June
Two additional candidates have campaign accounts open to run for the full term starting in 2026
A list of candidates who qualified for the primary election ballot in all New York City races will be finalized later this week

Kennedy with Pete Davidson and Paul Italia in 2022
Colin Jost still has a Staten Island ferry boat to sell. On the most recent episode of “Saturday Night Live,” the “Weekend Update” anchor starred in a sketch in which he attempted to sell the boat — which he bought with Pete Davidson in 2022 — to Mikey Day and Chloe Fineman
called “Ferry Altercation,” starred the trio as well as host Quinta Brunson
Day and Brunson played two angry drivers who enter into a verbal altercation while trying to park on the ferry
Jost makes his appearance after an exasperated Day complained he typically “loves the ferry.” Jost then showed up at the passenger side of Day and Fineman’s car
“Is that Colin Jost?” to which Day answered
Jost, Davidson, and Paul Italia bought the decommissioned MV John F. Kennedy in 2022. NBC News confirmed the purchase
Jost’s wife Scarlett Johansson expressed her hesitation about the purchase two years later
“He’s a kind person and he’s hilarious and thoughtful and loving
But also he’s got his naughty side,” the Marvel star revealed on “LIVE With Kelly and Mark.” That “naughty side” is represented by Jost’s purchase on the John F
which he bought in 2022 through an online public auction
what’s happening with this boat?’ You’ve got to start paying for its own docking fees at least
“So if anybody has a Bat Mitzvah they need to throw
It will really make our family happy,” she added

— Winning has become all but routine for Monsignor Farrell and Susan Wagner’s girls’ team during track and field championship season
The Lions officially secured their sixth straight team title at the outdoor edition of the Staten Island T&F Championships on Sunday
while the Falcons made it wins in back-to-back years
1/17Staten Island HS Track and Field: Farrell
Wagner continue run of dominance at Island Championships BOYS RECAP:
Monsignor Farrell captured the outdoor Island crown for a whopping 47th time in school history
winning comprehensively with 171 points to second-place St
an effort that head coach John Bentivigna was extremely pleased with
“I was really proud of the boys and the way they stepped up
They came through in a lot of big moments,” Bentivegna said of his crew’s output on the day
“We also had a lot of mini victories with kids PR’ing by 10-15 seconds and some guys returning from injuries who wanted to come back for the team and compete
It was a strong all around effort,” he continued
One runner who certainly pulled his weight was Joseph Calabrese
a half-mile specialist who took home first place in both the 800 meters (1:59.09) and as a leg of the Lions’ victorious 4x800 along with Francesco Borgognone
The entire field had very strong runners who I’ve gone against over the last two years and I respect them a lot,” Calabrese said of his mentality before racing against a deep pool of athletes
“My goal was to put myself in a good position; I trust in my coach and he spoke to me before the race telling me to put myself in a good spot to set myself up
I’m happy with how the results went,” he continued
Other gold medal winners for the Lions included Edwin Alleva (3,200
Alleva’s time in the 3,200 now stands as the sixth fastest time in borough history

The meet’s field Most Outstanding Perfomer on the boys’ side was given to Moore Catholic’s Gerald Green (first place in the long jump with a mark of 22-1 1/4)
a mark over two feet further than the next competitor
Green also won the 200-meter-dash with a time of 22.50 seconds
turning back 100-meter winner Aiden Felciano of CSI/McCown (22.78)
Susan Wagner’s Jeremy Walters took home the Track’s Most Outstanding Perfomer after winning the 400 intermediate hurdles with a time of 54.44 seconds and finished as the runner-up in the 400 (50.27)
Walters’ blazing time in the 400 hurdles now officially ranks as the fifth-fastest in Staten Island HS history — a performance that left Wagner head coach John Padula thrilled
We knew he was ready to run really fast when he ran at Arcadia last month
and on Friday night when we were practicing getting over the hurdles
I knew that he was going to be able to build a rhythm and hold it after seeing that
and he ran a great race with a three second PR and a school record
More individual champions across track events included CSIM’s Feliciano (100
49.65) and Cody Doskocil (3,000 steeplechase
Parker Simmons and Alexander Acosta) and Sea’s 4x400 relay (3:33.40
Winners in other field events from the boys’ competition included SW’s Tharidu Hewabajgamage (pole vault
Susan Wagner posted an even more commanding win
The Susan Wagner girls' track team poses with their team championship trophy after capturing first place at the Staten Island T&F Championships on May 4
but to do it with a team predominantly comprised of underclassmen is an accomplishment that Padula called “really exciting.”
“Especially with the young kids scoring a lot of points
it’s great being able to celebrate this and keep building for the future
and I think we did a little bit better than I thought we were going to do
I think we’ll be in good shape heading into cities,” he said
freshman Malina Rodriguez-King was another source of pride for the Falcons as she was awarded the meet’s Most Outstanding Track perfomer with an impressive double victory on the track
winning both the 800 (2:19.27) and the 1,500 (4:54.99)
I love seeing the team coming together and encouraging each other,” Rodriguez-King said
“She’s a really good runner who’s been getting better every day
She’s a great kid who puts in a lot of work and has a great training group around her where everyone compliments each other well,” Padula said when speaking about his freshman phenom’s rise to prominence
Susan Wagner freshman Malina King-Rodriguez took home first place in both the 1500 meter and 800 meter run at the Staten Island T&F Championships on May 4
Other winners who helped lead Wagner to victory included their 4x800 relay (Melisa Davila
The meet’s Most Outstanding Field Performer was New Dorp’s Ashley Korbul
who posted a monster double by winning both the 100 (13.24) and high jump (5 feet
the latter being tied for the number 2 mark in Island H.S
“I’ve been working really hard this season
and it’s really good to be able to put out my best performances and show people what I’ve got,” Korbul continued
Other winners from running events included Port Richmond’s Angellique Stone (100 hurdles

The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) on Friday hosted a combined 30 students and scouts from the Saint Clare School in Great Kills and Boy Scout Troop 25 for the annual count of juvenile glass eels at Staten Island’s Richmond Creek Bluebelt in Richmondtown
The American eel is born at sea and rides prevailing currents to clean
Eel populations are an important indicator of water quality
and experts have seen a resurgence in the eel population in New York Harbor as testing shows the water is cleaner and healthier than it has been since the Civil War
Juvenile glass eels migrate through New York Harbor to freshwater habitats
including the Richmond Creek Bluebelt where nearly 8,520 glass eels have been counted so far in 2025
”The yearly eel count at the Richmond Creek Bluebelt offers a wonderful chance for young New Yorkers to explore this intricate ecosystem that supports many species
and to understand the importance of keeping our waterways clean and healthy,” said DEP Commissioner Rohit T
”I’m grateful to the Saint Clare School and the Boy Scouts for their ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship and their continued involvement in this unique program.”
DEP has made substantial investments to build out the sewer system and connect thousands of homes to the City’s wastewater resource recovery facilities
This expansion of the sanitary sewer network
as well as improvements to wastewater treatment techniques
prevents pollution and improves the water quality of New York Harbor
Over the last 25 years, DEP has built more than 96 Bluebelts across New York City with additional sites currently in construction and design. Bluebelts preserve natural drainage corridors including streams
and revitalize and enhance them to optimize their functions of conveying

Saturday Night Live cast member Colin Jost turned his real-life ferry investment into comedic material during the show's May 3 episode
Jost appeared in a surprise cameo as a fictionalized version of himself trying to sell the decommissioned Staten Island Ferry he purchased with Pete Davidson in 2022
Brunson and Mikey Day portrayed characters arguing from their parked cars aboard a ferry
When Day’s character mentioned his love for ferries
Jost’s attempt to sell the boat was met with awkward refusals
prompting him to pivot his pitch by joking
referencing his fellow Staten Island native and co-investor in the ferry
which the duo plans to convert into a multi-purpose entertainment venue
Davidson has previously revealed that the project
is still in development and could take up to five years to complete
the two comedians have been working with investors to raise nearly $100 million for the ambitious transformation
The recent death of Leony Salcedo-Chevalier at Amazon’s JFK8 warehouse in Staten Island
New York is the latest preventable tragedy to blacken the company’s already infamous record
Salcedo-Chevalier was struck and killed by a truck while working at the fulfillment center’s loading dock late one night
The International Amazon Workers Voice calls for an investigation
to be conducted by rank-and-file JFK8 workers
into the circumstances of this needless death
We also call for workers’ control over safety at every Amazon facility
Whatever the immediate circumstances however
it is clear that the people responsible for Salcedo-Chevalier’s untimely death include Amazon management
and would-be dictator President Donald Trump who is dismantling all workplace regulations and the entire financial and corporate oligarchy which he serves
The worker’s death is not a freak accident but the predictable outcome of a systematic
profit-driven indifference to workers’ lives
Injury and death on the job has become a part of daily life for American workers
The company is responsible for an extraordinary number of injuries
the average injury rate for warehouses with more than 1,000 workers
according to an analysis by the National Employment Law Project
Amazon reported an injury rate of 6.5 per 100 workers for 2023
which is 71 percent higher than that of its peers
Amazon’s rate of injuries requiring a job transfer was 5.1 per 100 employees: nearly double the national average for warehousing overall (2.6 per 100 employees)
Some of the most recent incidents include:
In May 2023, Caes David Gruesbeck died of blunt force trauma to the head while trying to fix an overhead conveyor
Amazon was fined a derisory $7,000 for his death
In October 2022, a fire started in a trash compactor at JFK8
spreading smoke and fumes throughout the facility
Worked stop only after management was confronted by a crowd of angry workers
During a three-week period in summer 2022, three workers died at Amazon facilities in New Jersey
In December 2021, Amazon management ignored days of tornado warnings and kept workers on the job at the DLI4 warehouse in Edwardsville, Illinois. The tornado caused the building to cave in
Poushawn Brown
a worker at an Amazon facility in northern Virginia
died in her sleep of unexplained causes in January 2021
had been working as a COVID tester without adequate training or protective equipment
Her family could not afford to have an autopsy performed
and Amazon never provided the family with assistance of any kind
two workers were injured during a fire at the Amazon Web Services data center construction site near South Bend
The severity of their injuries required them to be airlifted to a hospital
It is impossible to have safe working conditions as long as Amazon and other workplaces are under the thumb of Wall Street oligarchs
Workers showed the alternative through their own practice when they forced management to shut operations after Salcedo-Chevalier’s death for two shifts
While the Amazon Labor Union endorsed the work stoppage
the initiative for it came from the workers
This spontaneous initiative must establish an organizational form
The International Amazon Workers Voice calls on Amazon workers to take action to assert their right to control over workplace safety
All such issues must be in the absolute control of rank-and-file safety committees in each facility
elected from trusted workers and excluding both managers and union officials
Workers must insist that they have the right also to stop work whenever it is unsafe
including if Covid or other diseases are spreading throughout the facility
The International Amazon Workers Voice proposes the following safety-related demands to Amazon workers:
Workers’ control over the speed of operations
Workers’ control over surveillance technology
Workers’ discretion over the closing of facilities because of safety concerns (e.g.
either on site or at the nearest medical facility
for all injured workers for as long as necessary
Financial compensation and time off commensurate with the worker’s injury
Workers’ monitoring of air quality in the warehouse
Universal distribution of personal protective equipment during outbreaks of infectious disease
The IAWV proposes this only as a first step in a movement pitting the working class against the corporate oligarchy
Amazon and other giant corporations must be expropriated
and run democratically by workers themselves to meet human need
Amazon’s logistics network and hi-tech innovations can then be used to quickly move goods to where people need them the most
helping to eliminate poverty and other social problems
which JFK8 workers elected to represent them three years ago
has done nothing to prevent this mounting toll of injuries and deaths
The union was founded after worker Christian Smalls led a protest against unsafe conditions during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic
This incident itself shows that waiting for Amazon management to come to its senses will lead workers nowhere
Change will only come if workers take the initiative to enforce safe working conditions themselves
the ALU issued a statement raising a series of demands
one one-hour and two 20-minute paid breaks per shift
lower productivity rates and an overhaul of the process for granting accommodation to injured workers
The union announced that it would begin its next campaign in “the coming days and weeks.” It added that “the next big action is coming sooner than we think.” But it offered no details about the nature or the timing of the action
This is the first time that ALU has even raised demands over workplace conditions since they won the union election in the spring of 2022
the ALU officials have no strategy to win them
then rank-and-file Amazon employees must prepare themselves to enforce their democratic will through workplace action
ALU won its election because workers saw it as a rank-and-file alternative to the existing
bureaucratically controlled unions which are tied to the political establishment
But within days after the vote it began developing corrupt relations with Democratic politicians and bureaucrats from the Teamsters and other unions
workers still do not have a contract and ALU has not proposed any serious action to win one
This led to the union’s connections with the rank-and-file to quickly evaporate
culminating in its decision last year to merge with the Teamsters
JFK8 workers have been brought into an organization whose officials have enforced decades of sellouts
including a contract at UPS two years ago which has led to tens of thousands of layoffs and its refusal to call a strike of railroad workers in late 2022
buying Congress time to pre-emptively ban it and impose a contract
Under Teamsters General President Sean O’Brien
the union is one of several which has embraced Trump
lying that the fascist-minded billionaire is a friend to workers and embracing his racist “America First” nationalism and attacks on immigrants
Nothing more clearly demonstrates the hostility of the union officials to the workers they claim to represent than their support for a would-be dictator
The Teamsters’ involvement in unionization drives at Amazon is only to bolster its own dues base
In a strike last December which included several New York area Amazon facilities
it initially left workers at JFK8 on the job
isolating the most militant warehouse in the country
JFK8 workers must escape the bureaucratic shackles and link up with workers in the Teamsters across the country
fighting unity of the global Amazon workforce can only be established in opposition to the treacherous union leadership through rank-and-file
To take up this fight, contact the World Socialist Web Site at wsws.org/workers

the Island teams begin their championship season early this weekend with the Staten Island Championships
it appears to be a three-team race for the title with Monsignor Farrell as the prohibitive favorites thanks to their depth in the throws
Individually there are several athletes looking for success in the larger championships including Sea’s Matthew Brodsky
Moore’s Gerald Green and Farrell’s Edwin Alleva and Susan Wagner’s Alex Acosta

Justin Berka is a returning two-event scorer from Island Champs and should lead the charge
After graduating several senior scorers they may be hard-pressed to repeat as SIPSAL Champs but stranger things have occured

Joseph by-the-Sea had in the middle distance relays indoors
Monsignor Farrell may very well have flown under the radar
led by their strength and depth in the middle distances
The defending outdoor champions also saw junior Anthony Lenza break out indoors in the hurdles and high jump to go along with already strong performers in the field
“We are looking to carry the momentum from Indoor season into a strong Outdoor campaign with a focus on beating personal bests and performing strongly in all levels of team competition,” said Bentivegna

Former players and coaches from the Moore Catholic's 2005 city championship-winning baseball team pose with their championship banner as the team was celebrated on May 3
— Before Saturday’s varsity baseball matchup against Regis at the Mid-Island Babe Ruth Sports Complex

commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Mavericks’ second CHSAA Intersectional title
The roster from that seminal team included then-seniors Mike Colonna
then-sophomore Gusito Salicetti and then-freshman Eddie Medina
That 2005 squad delivered one of the most memorable seasons in Staten Island high school baseball history
finishing with a 27–2 record and earning national recognition as the No
23 prep team in the country by USA Today in addition to their city championship triumph
The pitcher who started in Moore’s 1-0 victory over St

who described the commemorative ceremony as being part “a special day.”

there’s a lot of nostalgia in this place and it‘s really humbling to have everyone out here to support us for our important game today,” Tingos said
referring to the crowd that stayed to watch his team take on Regis
a game with significant playoff seeding implications
who posted a stellar .424 batting average and a 6-0 pitching record with a 1.86 ERA during that magical 2005 season
said he’s carried lessons from that year into his own coaching philosophy today — particularly in the goal of helping his athletes “become better people and better players.”
“That‘s what I try to do with my team here
I try to take a lot of the tactics and advice that I got during my time and instill it in my guys,” Tingos went on
Moore’s current coach credited his 2005 skipper
as “the best coach I’ve ever played for,” and Doscher was likewise in attendance to reflect on his team’s accomplishments

stuck together the whole time and they refused to lose
For all that the team accomplished on the field
Doscher was just as moved to see that his former players remain in touch to this day — a testament to the camaraderie they built during that extraordinary championship run
“I also coached at Mid-Island Little League for years
and at least half of those kids on the 2005 team came to me from there when they got to Moore
and seven of the starting nine played football together also
So they’ve always had a special bond,” Doscher said of this team’s extensive history together
Doscher’s experience coaching that championship team was made even more impactful by the presence of his son
who played a pivotal role in Moore’s title run
Former Mavericks head coach Nick Doscher addresses the crowd gathered to celebrate the 2005 Moore Catholic City Championship-winning baseball team on May 3
not only led the team in batting average (.426) that season
but also blasted a solo homer — the game’s only run — in the city championship against St
while tossing five no-hit innings in relief of Tingos
His unbelievable 2005 campaign was made even sweeter when he signed a minor-league contract with the Kansas City Royals the day after the city title win
Commenting on what embarking on that special period of life with his by his side meant to him
“I think having (my dad) as my coach made me a better person
I still remember us hugging at home plate after we won the city championship
and it‘s nice to look back on it since it all happened in a blur,” Doscher Jr
As Moore’s current squad looks to follow in the footsteps of Tingos’ championship team
he was grateful to see his players absorb the accomplishments of the 2005 alumni
especially with city title aspirations of their own
“I’m glad they got to learn a little bit about how good their coach was,” Tingos said with a laugh
I have 14 seniors and every one of them has been with me since they’re sophomores; they’re ready to win a city championship this year,” Tingos said of the chance to make Mavericks history again
Former assistant coach Eddie Sosa shakes hands with a current Mavericks player and receives a commemorative sweatshirt as Moore celebrated their 2005 City Championship team on May 3
While their historic championship may have happened two decades ago
it’s clear that these former Mavericks will long cherish the memories they made together on the diamond in 2005
a bond that will also continue to inspire the current generation of Moore players striving to create their own legacy
