from Teacher Education student Kiara Stickney as she shares how the people she's met and the experiences she's had at Santa Clara have helped shape her into the educator she's dreamed of becoming Kiara Stickney’s love for working with children has taken her all over the globe with the Peace Corps and as a Fulbright Scholar but a calling to teach a bit closer to home brought her journey to Santa Clara University Her time at Santa Clara has been characterized by personal growth and invaluable mentorship– read more about it below.  Stickney has always held a passion for working with our youth but Stickney’s first post-undergraduate step towards a career in education was a stint in the Peace Corps.  but this was my first time working with younger kids and creating meaningful bonds with my colleagues and students was so valuable.”   which brought her to State University of Tetova in North Macedonia This gave Stickney useful experience teaching older adolescents and adults and she followed up the experience by earning her first Masters in International Education from American University that gave her the nudge towards SCU.  “While I really enjoyed teaching internationally returning home during the pandemic made me realize that I should ensure I’m able to work with youth closer to home as well,” says Stickney “My mentor was telling me about what a great fit SCU was for her and how some of her favorite professors are still teaching While the content knowledge from her classes is important being hands-on in the classroom has been one of her favorite parts of the program Stickney has even been able to complete her student teaching placement at a school she was already volunteering at prior to SCU: Los Paseos Elementary in San Jose.  I’ve had the opportunity to teach second grade and a fourth and fifth grade combo class I’ve enjoyed the experience of learning how best to structure learning when two grades are involved plus being able to work with and watch the growth of students I met prior to SCU has been really special,” Stickney notes.  In addition to her appreciation for the School’s flexible class schedules and modalities and its location allowing her to be close to family Stickney is also grateful for the scholarships that have enabled her to attend SCU.  “With the student teaching and classes there’s little time available to work One of the scholarships I received was also tied to a community service component incorporated into the coursework I needed to take This focus on community service was one of SCU’s values that really stood out to me and influenced my decision to attend,” says Stickney.  Stickney hopes to apply all she’s learned at SCU to teaching kids in 2nd-5th grade.  “The mentorship I’ve received at SCU has been so meaningful because it’s helped me learn not only how to support my students academically but also how to teach them about life values you’re helping your students navigate new social situations and regulate their emotions,” Stickney shares.  “You’re giving them consistency which isn’t something every kid has outside of the classroom You’re building relationships with them and showing them you’ll continue to have their back and the kind of teacher SCU has helped me become.” 455 El Camino RealGuadalupe HallSanta Clara Contact Us The business on north Hilltop Drive in the Chuck E Cheese shopping (NYSE: KOP) today announced that the company will discontinue phthalic anhydride production at its facility in Stickney was driven by significant near-term capital spending requirements that could not be economically justified by end-market projections An ancillary benefit is an improvement in the site's environmental footprint as annual emissions of certain regulated air contaminants are expected to be reduced by 50 to 70 percent Koppers has targeted mid-2025 for the shutdown and expects to ramp down production of phthalic anhydride over the next six months as the company builds inventory to supply existing contracts through 2025 as necessary. The closure of the phthalic anhydride plant will not impact Stickney's coal tar distillation operations which manufacture products including creosote The phthalic anhydride plant at Stickney was constructed to consume naphthalene a byproduct of the coal tar distillation process as a feedstock to produce the chemical intermediate used to manufacture plasticizers phthalic anhydride has become less profitable as lower naphthalene production resulted in a need to supplement production with a greater proportion of higher-cost third-party feedstock This action is expected to result in pre-tax charges to earnings of $51 million to $55 million through the end of 2026 Approximately $28 million constitutes non-cash charges anticipated to be recorded in 2024 and 2025 with approximately $23 million to $27 million over the next two years going toward cash expenditures Ongoing operational and capital expenditure savings have been incorporated into the company's current 2025 goals of $300 million of adjusted EBITDA and $65 million to $75 million of capital expenditures "The decision to close the phthalic anhydride plant demonstrates our ongoing willingness to critically assess our portfolio and pivot from underperforming businesses when it is clear that improvement is not on the horizon we can continue to enhance our competitive position in healthier markets to drive better long-term returns Ceasing operations at any plant is never easy I want to thank our dedicated employees who have worked hard over the years to serve our customers with quality products.  I am mindful of the impact this decision has on them and am committed to ensuring that they are supported through this transition." MITCHELL — For one of the high-scoring offenses in Class B every point counted for the Sanborn Central/Woonsocket girls basketball team on Thursday night the Blackhawks were able to overcome their offensive woes to defeat Corsica-Stickney 45-43 in the Class B SoDak 16 to clinch a spot in the state tournament a team that averages more 60 points per game struggled to get the offense rolling early Leading scorer Liz Boschee was held scoreless in the first half as SCW looked for answers Goertz also hit the most critical shot of the night Down by two with less than 90 seconds to go she finished a difficult shot at the basket earning a foul in the process to get a 3-point play that put SCW in front by one point I knew I just had to finish strong because I hadn't been finishing strong earlier in the game So just finish strong and get to the free throw line.” “[Alexa] just makes plays like that,” SCW head coach Rob Baruth said “Lizzy's been doing a lot of stuff and tonight I'm proud of her and that's what being a senior leader is about.” Even though Goertz picked up the scoring tab Boschee came up big when SCW needed it most in the final minutes of the matchup Boschee finished strong in the final minutes scoring critical points from the floor and at the free-throw line to aid SCW’s late comeback Addison Bartholow finished with 12 points and four rebounds Kaylie Robinson finished with experience winning two gold medals in swimming at the Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020 she could think of little that surprised her during the Games despite the fact that it was her first international meet ever her first time leaving the United States and still less than two years removed from becoming a double amputee “In my life I’ve done a pretty good job with the curve balls thrown my way,” the Cary has a vascular condition that she shares with just one other person in the United States which prevents sufficient blood supply from reaching her limbs took her from being able-bodied to losing parts of both legs in the span of a year and a half It started when she was 14 and rated one of the top swimmers in the country in her age group in the mile and the pain continued to worsen over time She found herself on a steady stream of painkillers Stickney and her medical team made the decision to amputate her left leg below the knee in May 2018 She was back in the pool in no time, and quickly made an impact in Para swimming winning the 100-meter and 400-meter freestyle events at the national championships before the year was over The same downward spiral she’d experienced with her left leg started over again in her right An angiogram conducted at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General showed no blood flow past her right calf and Stickney had a second below-the-knee amputation in October 2019 She made her Paralympic debut in Tokyo and won gold in the 400-meter freestyle S8 as well as the 4x100 medley 34 points until I stood on the podium after winning the 400,” she said “There’s a huge difference between racing and having other people believe in you and racing when you actually believe in yourself Stickney has continued to collect honors over the last three years most recently winning world titles in the 100- and 400-meter freestyle But Stickney has since lost even more of her legs to the disease She was reclassified from an S8 to an S7 prior to last year’s world championships She’s spent a third of the last year in the hospital in Boston — spending nine days at a time unable to leave the hospital or sometimes even her room — getting treatment There are still many unknowns when it comes to her medical condition spending nine days a month in the hospital But leading up to Paris we had to do what was going to be best for me and ensure that I didn’t lose any more of me That’s why we’ve been doing the treatment this way because things were going really downhill with my limbs.” Stickney has always been driven to set and reach her goals, and even with the medical challenges since Tokyo that remains true. Swimming and being able to continue to push her body through sport is something that helps get her through the hard days in the hospital when she dreams about getting back in the pool When she dreams about simply being able to get a breath of fresh air “It would be so special (to return to the Paralympics),” she said than the last time because of everything I’ve been going through It’s just always such an amazing experience and I could never say enough positive things about being able to represent my country It was so special to go to Tokyo just after losing both my legs and being faced with this awful thing in life and turning it into a positive I feel like I’m trying to do that same thing with my situation now.” reCAPTCHA helps prevent automated form spam.
