What's next at Gateway Green in center of Streetsboro?Broska said substantial work is taking place on the city's property at the center of town which is now being referred to as "Gateway Green." The various projects on the city property previously were referred to as the "City Center Project." Councilwoman Lisa McDaniel came up with the name which Broska said he thought would "capture the essence of the Gateway to Progress." This spring, a new splash pad will open on the city's property on State Route 43 along with restrooms and a shaded picnic area "The oval project will finally allow us to have those types of community gatherings that folks have been asking for and the Gateway Green will provide sense of place a physical place where neighbors and friends can gather and meet and share those things we could not have done before." The 14,500-square-foot city hall also is under construction with beams rising at the construction site city offices were located in a 60-year-old school building "where it was common to see snowdrifts on the inside of the windows in the morning being cold enough for frost to form and in the afternoon being in a sauna." The city commissioned a study to see if it was feasible to save the building, and found that it would take "an absurd amount of money" to bring the structure up to modern standards. The building was demolished in 2018 and city offices moved to 555 Frost Road 90-foot by 180-foot building with an outdoor courtyard in the center the same architect that designed the Community Center was the architect that designed the city hall and Cavenaugh Construction was selected as the builder Project cost has been listed at about $7 million Additional plans include an amphitheater at City Park and a walkway and more green space in the area between the fire station and the old plaza State, federal funds help rebuild Streetsboro roadsBroska said the city has worked with the GPD Group which has helped the city leverage more than $35 million in state and federal funding "to almost completely rebuild our road infrastructure" at about 12% of the original cost He said 88 cents of every dollar spent on city roads has come from outside sources he said projects the city has undertaken have included rebuilding the causeway and bridge over Lake Rockwell work on State Route 303 on the city's west side that eliminated flooding at the bypass and improvements near the city's railroad tracks that decreased the frequency and duration of flooding in the area The city also undertook a project to rebuild traffic signals that dated to 1994; resurfaced State Route 14 a job completed in 2023; and began resurfacing State Route 43 The city also completed a safety project on Falcon Hill to reduce fatal and serious injury crashes and used Ohio Public Works Commission funding to defray the costs of resurfacing many of the city's main streets Now, the city is preparing to undertake multiple road projects in 2026 They include the complete rebuilding of the intersection at State Routes 43 and 14 with a concrete surface; resurfacing of State Route 14 from Public Square to the turnpike; resurfacing of State Route 43 from Public Square south to Twin Lakes and from Public Square north to Market Square Drive; and improvement at the intersection of State Routes 303 and 14 with a new traffic signal to be installed at State Routes 14 and 303 and Ranch Road along with the removal of a westbound "slip lane." The Ohio Department of Transportation stated in a news release that the proposed new traffic signal will make it "safer and more efficient" for travelers on westbound State Route 303 to access State Route 14 The projects will cost a combined total of $6.1 million and the city's share of that is $2.1 million projects that would both include center turn lanes and sidewalks But it's unclear if the city will receive funding for both projects Meanwhile, Viega LLC an American subsidiary of Germany-based Viega Group chose the industrial park for its 180,000-square-foot plant Economic Development Director Patrick O'Malia previously said that could mean $20,000 a year in income tax for Streetsboro $40,000 for Shalersville and $7,500 for the JEDD infrastructure "The last time we had an investment that large Hundreds of jobs have been added within the city limits as well Layer Zero has taken over the former Deluxe building and has added 217 high tech jobs A care and rehabilitation facility is under construction A former leather shop on Public Square will become a marijuana dispensary Winking Lizard will build a restaurant on State Route 43 and the former Zip City will reopen as Laser Defense "It has been and will always be our desire to build our city into a city that we can all be proud of and offer the services and amenities that our citizens want and deserve," Broska said "We're not the gateway to progress for nothing." meeting He told council that the city's "bargain price" was reduced by about $235,000 because of maintenance work done by the city "The square hasn't been done in 20 years," he said adding that the intersection originally was proposed with asphalt but was upgraded to concrete because of the amount of traffic which originally was to be paved only from the square west to the turnpike and State Route 43 will be paved from Market Square Drive to the southern city limits the intersection of State Routes 14 and 303 will be upgraded but they all would have had to have been done eventually," he said He said council will be asked to approve legislation later this year and then the project will be bid in January 2026 with its start at the beginning of the spring construction season "There'll be quite a bit of disruption," he said he pointed out that most of the roads going through the center of town will be new and smooth "That whole center core of town will be rebuilt," he said "I has had its share of those troubles the beloved restaurant group has persisted and announced last month that it will be opening the newest Winking Lizard in Streetsboro in 2026 Cleveland Magazine spoke with co-owner John Lane to learn more about the new location and the future of the Winking Lizard Cleveland Magazine: What can guests expect at this new location We’re gonna build a new building next to it The ceilings in the church aren’t really tall enough to put a Winking Lizard in there so that area will probably be a party room and then we’ll build a new Winking Lizard right next to it.  CM: Will there be any unique features at this new location JL: It’s going to have a cool outdoor patio but I know it’s going to have a really cool patio CM: This is the first new Winking Lizard location since 2018 How does this mark a new era of growth for the company it’s been a little crazy for our industry as a whole It takes three things to open a restaurant We’ve had a lot of people come to us with a lot of different locations And we finally have that solved and have the people to expand CM: The restaurant industry has faced some significant challenges in the last few years How has Winking Lizard adapted to these changing times JL: We lost so many people that got out of the industry when the pandemic hit in the restaurant industry we can’t compete with those that want a 9 a.m It’s just not the restaurant business we just have to be the best restaurant company we can be to attract these people that want to stay in the industry.  RELATED: Decades, an 80’s-and-90s-Themed Dance Bar, Is Now Open in the Flats East Bank CM: Winking Lizard had to close some locations in recent years JL: I think the Downtown location is pretty self explanatory It’s taken a long time for Downtown to come back I’m not sure it’s even 100% yet on the amount of people coming back in the workforce I think it’s finally starting to get better and again — that was kind of a byproduct of the pandemic It just did not come back like we would have liked to have seen so you have to make those business decisions.  CM: What excites you most about the future of Winking Lizard JL: When you have good people working for you and they want opportunity It’s that opportunity that we’re creating for more people to move up the ranks then it makes it a lot harder to attract good people a good start for us to get going again so that we can show people that we’re in the game and we’re going to continue to grow For more updates about Cleveland, sign up for our Cleveland Magazine Daily newsletter the crash was intentional police said there is no evidence that it was anything other than a "heartbreaking and horrific accident," and the driver did return to the scene and spoke with officers Kaya largest private equity firm It continues to lease the building to FNS, Inc., a California-based company that has been leasing the building. FNS specializes in ocean freight, trucking, air freight, warehousing, customs clearance and logistics consulting, according to a release from JLL Capital Markets The building was presented to officials as a "spec" building that would be finished to suit the eventual tenant. Geis also constructed 1 million square foot spec building in Shalersville Geis officials said previously that the two buildings could work cooperatively A tenant for the Shalersville building has not been announced Why is the Streetsboro building so valuable?A news release from JLL touts the convenient location of the State Route 43 building its access to the Ohio Turnpike and Interstate 480 noting it is within 300 miles of major U.S is in the "Southeast Cleveland industrial submarket," which has seen declining vacancy rates and consistent rent growth since 2021 The building is described as "a modern industrial facility with Class A specifications" that include full truck circulation The building's "flexible cross-dock configuration" would allow the structure to be divided into spaces as small as 100,000 square feet “Gateway Commerce Center offered an opportunity to acquire stable in-place cash flow secured by a high-profile tenant committed to the property and location,” stated John Huguenard who is senior managing director of JLL and the firm's industrial co-lead “The strategic Southeast Cleveland location within the greater Ohio logistics hub positions the property well for long-term success Cleveland boasts the lowest availability rate in the entire country through 2023 further underlining the attractiveness of this investment.” The Streetsboro Police Department has clarified the incident in which its K-9 officer Kaya died Tuesday after being struck by a vehicle After the department announced Kaya's death on its Facebook page city residents and followers of the page expressed outrage that the dog was allowed to exercise in a grassy field without being leashed Commenters blamed the Streetsboro K-9 officer for the dog's death in the traffic accident along State Route 303 early Tuesday night. saying that while Officer Jason Hall was exercising K-9 Kaya early Tuesday evening the dog moved too close to SR 303 and was struck by a car When Hall found Kaya after becoming concerned when he didn't answer his call to the dog then to an emergency veterinary center in Highland Heights Some commenters suggested Hall was at fault because he allowed Kaya to exercise so close to the road "I'm sorry for the loss of this beautiful boy it was negligence on his handler to stop anywhere near He should have been nowhere near a busy road to begin with away from the road and he chose to let him out there?!" Other commenters defended Hall or posted condolences "I couldn’t even hold back the tears while reading My condolences to SPD for the loss of a fellow officer Streetsboro Police Department clarified the incident in the same Wednesday post and updated plans for services for the K-9 and well off of the roadway in the field to the west of the PD," the post reads "It is a place Officer Hall and K9 Kaya played ball where Kaya got to stretch his legs and take bathroom breaks It is an area Kaya had played 1000's of times over the last 8+ years we have had him We will likely never know why Kaya redirected towards SR 303 it truly means a lot as we deal with the loss." Rich Polivka confirmed Thursday that the update was due to negative comments against Hall "I understand people misunderstood what was posted and took it to mean that the dog was let out on 303 to exercise we wish we would have perhaps stated it differently," said Polivka Polivka estimated that Hall and Kaya were 500 to 600 feet from the road Hall searched for him and found he had been struck by a car The driver of the car returned to the scene and spoke with police Polivka said other dogs had also been exercised in the field and the field has been used for training of dogs without previous incident Kaya exercised and trained off of his leash "None of us feel that it's irresponsible to let the dog out there," said Polivka but he's an animal and they have instincts We don't know if there could have been something that led him out that way but it's just an unfortunate circumstance." Polivka said he has not spoken to Hall about the negative comments "I wouldn't be surprised if it has gotten back to him and I do feel badly for that because he's heartbroken and no one is more upset than he was," said Polivka "And for some people to be thinking that he was just being reckless or callous or careless with his dog An offer through Polivka to provide Hall with an opportunity to comment did not bring an immediate response Wednesday's update also says Kaya will be cremated but details for any memorial service are pending Polivka previously said that such plans would be largely up to Hall and his family Donations in Kaya's memory to help fund the Streetsboro Police Department's K-9 program can be mailed to Streetsboro Police Association That was Streetsboro softball coach LeRoy Moore's goal entering Wednesday's Metro Athletic Conference game with Field after a number of run-rule losses to the Falcons "Our main goal at the beginning of the game that I set was and I said I would consider [it] a victory if we go seven innings." A funny thing happened on the way to that seven-inning game exploded for five runs in the top of the sixth for a 7-6 victory — their first win over the Falcons in nearly a decade "We're making history this year," Streetsboro senior Hailey Miller said "And it's like I honestly don't even believe that we beat them How Streetsboro softball pulled off a stunning comebackPerhaps that's the one benefit of all those lopsided losses to the Falcons in the past A lot of teams would've gotten down on themselves after Field pushed three runs across the plate in the fifth to take a 6-2 lead remembered its recent past and knew things could be worse I felt like we still had the win because we were so close," Rockets sophomore Khloe Cutright said "Because last year we came in and a couple innings in three doubles) was at the center of that belief The way the nine-hitter smoked the ball all afternoon it seemed anything was possible when the sophomore was at the plate Speedy centerfielder Olivia Knepper gave Cutright a chance in the sixth extending the inning with a two-out single to put runners at the corners clobbering the ball over the left fielder for a two-run double "I just have to swing for contact because when I swing for the fences I usually just lose my head and that's what I usually go for is just contact." Sophomore Olivia DeToro and freshman Mallorie Gierke followed with patient at-bats with freshman Ella Simpson watching a couple of close pitches sail by for a third straight walk to bring the Rockets within a run and the first baseman used an inside-out approach for an opposite-field two-run single to put Streetsboro in front and I was just hitting it for contact and I was trying to hit a little hole just to at least get one [run] in," Miller said Rockets sophomore Amy Rein then tossed two scoreless innings out of the bullpen to close it out who raced to short right to catch a popup with runners on second and third in the sixth Streetsboro's fielding was a storyline throughout the game 5-1) have been much improved in the field all season and while they weren't perfect against the Falcons (6-2 Sydney Burfield and Rein did a good job pitching carefully and the left side of the Rockets infield corralled some hard ground balls and turned them into outs "That's one of the things that we noted after the game is this defense that we have is probably one of the best defenses that Streetsboro has ever had," Moore said Ohio (WOIO) - K-9 Kaya from the Streetsboro Police Department was struck and killed by a passing car along SR-303 Tuesday afternoon while out of his cruiser to stretch his legs Kaya got too close to the road and was struck by a car Officer Hall took Kaya to the closest vet and then to an emergency center at Metropolitan Veterinary Hospital in Highland Heights Social media posts indicated it was an intentional act at this time there is no evidence that the crash was anything other than a heartbreaking and horrific accident Police are still investigating the accident The driver did return to the scene to speak with officers K-9 Kaya was only three days away from his 9th birthday Police asked you to please keep Officer Hall and everyone at SPD in your thoughts as they deal with their loss COLUMBUS — Jarreau Walker has dreamed of this moment for a long time The Streetsboro sophomore's eyes began drifting toward a high school state championship the moment he won an Ohio Athletic Committee elementary school title "Seeing all my older friends in high school do that and I just wanted to do that," Walker said "It's been a big dream of mine for a minute now." Walker wasn't alive in 2004, the last time Streetsboro had a state wrestling championship. The sophomore smiled hearing that fact Sunday after his 12-3 victory over fellow sophomore Rayce Watson of Jonathan Alder in the Division II 106-pound final I thank God for the experience and the stuff that I was able to do today on the state [mat]." Jarreau Walker starts strongMark Skonieczny is a straight shooter The Streetsboro coach wants his wrestlers to compete the same way — quick and to the point "We want to strike quick and we want to strike either three or seven points right off the bat because what it does is it brings you up and it brings them down You try to break them kind of early to take that fight out of them He couldn't muster much offense whatsoever against Walker with all three of his points coming on stall calls Skonieczny wasn't thrilled about the calls but fortunately it didn't matter with Walker's early margin not to give up nothing stupid," Skonieczny said Jarreau Walker handles spotlight with easeWalker has had the spotlight on him for a long time That comes with being a top youth wrestler That comes with bringing an undefeated record into the state tournament That's right — Walker carried a 30-0 record down Interstate 71 with him He dominated with a tech fall in the first round followed by two major decisions to work his way into the finals "For a sophomore in high school that's 15 years old you couldn't ask anymore," Skonieczny said he acted like he's been here two or three times before." The spotlight grew brighter when he defeated two-time national champion and Division I state champion Loc Webber of Dublin Coffman in the Brecksville Holiday Tournament finals Walker was at the center of a controversial call when he was disqualified after his district championship victory "Last year I was just very heartbroken," Walker said "My freshman year I wanted to at least have the chance to become a four-timer but we just got to progress through it and come back stronger next year." "And now he's no longer a kid that got disqualified A Portage County grand jury has indicted two men and a woman accusing them of sexually abusing a preteen Streetsboro girl for more than two years substance abuse tests for all three defendants in addition to temporary protection orders The three defendants are scheduled for jury trial May 20 before Judge Laurie J More: Child rape trial set for Portage man in prison for life in Trumbull case It was a rollercoaster day for the Streetsboro Rockets’ softball team as they competed in a tri-duel against Hudson and Warren Howland Streetsboro stormed back from an early deficit to top the Explorers 10-7 but did not fare as well against the Tigers losing 13-0 in five innings to settle for a split last Saturday at Veterans Stadium the team came back after spotting Hudson four unearned runs in the first inning and it was good to come back and win that game because we went up against a buzzsaw in that second game against Howland,” said Coach LeRoy Moore In spite of the early success that the Rockets (6-3 one of their biggest weaknesses has been the same as last season as they continue to get off to slow starts it was the same story as Streetsboro fell behind 4-0 in the top of the first inning as the Explorers jumped aheadon five hits and two walks The Rockets responded with two runs in the bottom half of the first inning but needed to chip away at Hudson’s lead throughout the game After the Explorers increased their lead to 7-4 in the fourth inning Streetsboro scored six unanswered runs including a five-run sixth inning the Rockets drove the ball by recording four doubles including RBI-doubles by sophomore catcher Olivia DeToro The first three out four girls had doubles so they were crushing and connecting with the ball at that point and then we had another girl get on with an error,” noted the second-year coach “Two other girls got on with errors then and we kind of flipped the order around.” as strong as the Rockets’ start to the season has been the comeback victory against Hudson marked the second consecutive game in which the Rockets enjoyed an offensive eruption scoring 23 runs in two games after tweaking their batting order “I think it is finding out where some of the girls are more comfortable in the line-up to where they had been,” he added “Again as some of these players are getting more reps we are starting to see where they are able to execute more whether it is putting a sacrifice bunt down to move one runner or move a couple of runners It seems like they are becoming more comfortable at the plate.” The Rockets’ explosive sixth inning contributed to the 15 hits they recorded in the game After the Explorers scored seven runs in the first four innings senior right-hander Sydney Burfield silenced Hudson’s offense by coming on to hurl three innings of scoreless relief while surrendering only three hits and striking out two batters In addition to seeing instant success from rearranging the lineup Moore also said that the Rockets continue to benefit from their youth movement as six of their starting nine are underclassmen building off of one of Streetsboro’s most successful seasons in recent memory last year Moore added that another one of Streetsboro’s biggest strengths has been the camaraderie between the players as the improved chemistry has also helped fuel the Rockets’ quick start to the season “The main thing that I am seeing is that between all of those players and underclassmen is the chemistry so they are all cheering for one another and having fun again,” Moore noted As thrilling as the comeback victory against Hudson was the Rockets experienced a tougher fate against Howland as the Tigers were sparked by a five-run first inning The Tigers displayed serious power by slugging three home runs in the game and never relinquished control en route to triggering the mercy rule after five frames when the lead had increased to 13 runs Moore acknowledged that the game against Howland marked one of the first contests this year in which the Rockets played an opponent that was in a different tier “It is good to see those wins and against the real top programs it really shows that okay our work is not done and we have to work even harder to get to that next level but it is good to see that we are moving in that direction,” he added. Streetsboro lost 62-47 to Laurel at the Canton Memorial Field House Saturday afternoon Though this year's end in some ways mirrored last year's — with a regional final loss to the Gators — the game itself was completely different Streetsboro didn't score in the first quarter against Laurel falling behind 14-0 and trailing by double digits nearly all game the Rockets made the Gators earn it the hard way "I'm always going to feel like we can do better on the defensive end but on the big stage I felt like we didn't back down and we didn't give it to them," Streetsboro coach Carl Singer said Streetsboro was within two points at the half The Rockets remained within two at the end of three quarters and within six points midway through the fourth they earned it through a number of incredibly challenging shots they belong in the conversation as one of the top teams in the state "I feel like we've proven that we are a great team," Streetsboro senior Naomi Benson said "And [that] coach Carl Singer is a great coach and he's an amazing person to coach the team and just grow." Carlee Bedford step up against LaurelBenson had a relatively quiet game in Wednesday's regional semifinal As Canfield contested every pass to the post Benson enjoyed watching guards Sydney Abbuhl and Olivia Johnson-Wilson shine and they ultimately tied with Benson for the team lead with 11 points apiece Benson knew her team needed her to be more aggressive Saturday She answered with one of her more remarkable performances with her 24 points and 14 rebounds just beginning to tell the story "I would just say I had to be strong this game from the turn," Benson said and even though it didn't have the outcome I wanted The Streetsboro senior and Illinois commit frequently finished through a cacophony of defenders a big behind her and a guard nipping at the ball from the moment Benson caught it this is your opportunity to go out there and be unstoppable,'" Singer said and she has a lot to be proud of finishing her career with that game." including a couple of impressive driving finishes by junior Carlee Bedford (12 points) "I would say just attacking hard was the way that we can stay with them and potentially win," Bedford said "And I saw them coming at us just constantly driving so I knew that we had to bring it right back to them." Streetsboro refused to let Laurel run away for 24-plus minutes When the Gators took a 13-7 lead late in the first quarter on a 3-pointer by Tristan Williams from way back Bedford answered with a 3 just 10 seconds later Laurel threatened to pull away again early in the third as Jordyn Meyer pulled up in transition for a 3 and Williams added a masterful driving finish against Benson to push the Gators' lead to nine Bedford responded by lowering her shoulder and bowling into the paint for a tricky lefty layup and Benson followed with a slick step-back jumper to get the Rockets back within five "We just showed that you can't get rid of us that easily," Bedford said "You can't just go on a run and expect us not to come back even harder." Down seven in the closing minutes of the third quarter Streetsboro rallied again with a 5-0 run by Benson who took lobs from Abbuhl and Hendon and converted them into hard-fought baskets so she knows that every ball that goes in the air is hers After leading by two entering the fourth quarter Laurel pulled away on an assortment of tough finishes It started with junior Liv Schneider driving into a smaller defender and hitting a bank shot followed by a slick driving bank from Williams who later delivered a dagger by somehow tossing in a driving shot as she fell to the floor for a nine-point lead with 2:45 remaining Laurel made tough shots and Streetsboro went cold from deep But the Rockets had certainly proven a point — that they could play against top competition their careers ended in a tremendous place — the hallowed parquet floor of the Canton Memorial Field House 'I love them,'" Benson said of the postgame locker room and to not be able to practice and play with them anymore is kind of sad." including the greatest player in program history but Bedford said the expectations won't change going forward "I would say the expectation doesn't change at all," Bedford said "We should be right back here next year with me Liv and Ava [Bodovetz] just trucking away because I'm definitely going to be one of the more dominant posts in the paint and Liv is still going to be our number one point guard "I'm just going to say that no matter what we should be back here next year and nothing's going to change Voters in Ravenna and Streetsboro will decide on school levies on their May 6 ballots Wednesday was the deadline for candidates to file petitions in partisan races that appear on the May ballot One seat on Portage County Municipal Court also will be on the ballot along with partisan races candidates for Kent City Council and mayor Those seeking at-large seats on Streetsboro City Council also filed petitions 14 to certify the petitions for the ballot where voters will elect a council president one at-large seat and council members for Wards 1 and 2 Elected offices in Streetsboro and Ravenna are non-partisan Independent candidates in partisan races have until May 5 to file and August is the filing deadline for the November ballot which will include races in townships and villages Wednesday also was the deadline for ballot issues requested to go before voters in May In the Portage County Municipal Court, Judge Melissa Roubic will face Wesley Buchanan in a May 6 primary an attorney who works in private practice in Akron also ran unsuccessfully for Municipal Court judge in 2021 and for Common Pleas Court in 2022 The contest is the only countywide race on the May ballot and six candidates are running for city council Democrat Jack Amrhein has filed petitions to run for mayor Amrhein has served on council for 17 years meaning that he can serve as acting mayor if Kent's mayor is an independent and has until May 5 to decide to run Those seeking seats on City Council at-large include Republican Cecil Anderson and Democrats Derek Salustro Anderson would run unopposed on the Republican side while the Democrats would narrow the field to three Wallach is a former member of Kent City Council where voters will elect three candidates to Council at-large including two current council members and one who has served before Councilman Jon Hannan and Steve Michniak have filed petitions as have former councilmen Michael Lampa and Chris Yonish Lampa, who was elected to serve Ward 1 in 2019, resigned from council in 2023. Chuck Kocisko Way would be at the northeast corner and Rich Taiclet Way would be at the northwest corner "Chuck had been involved with the city very intensely for quite a long time," Broska said not only for his contributions in the civic portion but for his contributions in the government portion." done all season on their home field — and gridirons across Northeast Ohio Marcus Council and Cohen Klimak ran for the century mark — by halftime — as Streetsboro secured a school-record 12th win with its 34-7 Region 13 quarterfinal victory over Northwest The undefeated and third-seeded Rockets (12-0) got off to a bit of a shaky start with back-to-back illegal motion penalties on the game's opening drive faking a sweep handoff and breaking a couple of tackles for a 20-yard gain followed by taking a sweep for 58 yards with Klimak capping the drive with a one-yard plunge A theme was thereby set as Council (seven carries Another theme was set on Northwest's opening drive Two of its first three carries went for first downs with sophomore defensive lineman Demetrius Fuller snuffing out a second-and-goal run at the line of scrimmage and the Rockets following up by forcing two incomplete passes to garner a turnover-on-downs Two plays later and Klimak had his own pair of nasty cuts tossing the final defender to the ground en route to a 47-yard touchdown run and a 13-0 lead Northwest again quickly pushed its way to midfield Streetsboro held firm by clogging a pair of inside runs with junior Manny Gibson taking a sweep around the right end for a 12-yard score and a 20-0 halftime lead Here are our live updates from throughout tonight's game: What a great drive by Chase Badger
