As inflation continues to strain household budgets
one community member is stepping up to help residents in need
the Stroudsburg Community Food Resource Center
aims to combat food insecurity while fostering collaboration among local organizations
says the demand for food support has never been greater
the economy is in a little bit of trouble right now
This growing nonprofit, based in Stroudsburg, is focused on addressing food insecurity for one person at a time. By uniting local government, the Pocono Interfaith Council
Loomis hopes to build a network of support that streamlines access to resources for those who need them most
While the organization’s primary mission is to feed people and fill empty stomachs
People from different religious backgrounds are collaborating to help people
and it "could become a model for other local communities to do the same,” said Loomis
His vision includes creating a centralized hub for food and other human services without placing the burden on a single organization
the goal is to share responsibilities for the good of the entire community
Although the center does not yet have a physical location
plans are underway to secure a space in central Stroudsburg
That would eliminate the vast majority of the homeless community that’ll be able to access these resources,” he said
The team is still seeking additional board members and community partners to join the mission
Anyone interested in getting involved can reach out to Josh Loomis at jloomis6712@gmail.com
Walmart announced that 26 of its stores across Pennsylvania are getting a makeover
which is part of the retail giant's mission to become "Pennsylvania’s favorite place to shop."
Among the locations getting a facelift is East Stroudsburg
Walmart shared that the remodels are part of a plan to upgrade more than 650 stores nationwide in 2025
"Our stores often serve as the heartbeat of the communities we operate in
and these remodels are a testament to our dedication to enhancing that role,” said Annie Walker
senior vice president for Walmart's East Business Unit
Walmart said it has invested over $493 million in store improvements across the Pennsylvania over the past five years
promising not just a fresh paint and new shelving but a total reimagining of the in store shopping experience
Walmart listed these changes in the release:
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is resurfacing part of Business Route 209

The mayor of Stroudsburg was sentenced in February for a 2023 DUI offense in Northampton County
Northampton County Court of Common Pleas Judge Abraham Kassis sentenced Michael Moreno
to a minimum of 30 days with a maximum of six months
Moreno was given 30 days' credit for an inpatient program
He will also have to pay a $750 fine as well as other costs associated with the case and complete the Alcohol Highway Safety Program
He is not allowed to consume any alcohol or drugs and will be subject to random urine screening tests
Moreno said that he is serving the consequences of his actions and that he will continue to serve the community
He also thanked the residents and business owners of Stroudsburg for electing him as well as for calling the borough home
Moreno was arrested by Slate Belt Regional Police Department for DUI after his vehicle ran out of gas in Wind Gap on Sept
Police said Moreno had a BAC of .20 when he was tested at the Bethlehem DUI center
which is more than twice the legal limit of .08
Moreno apologized for the incident during a Stroudsburg Borough Council meeting in November 2023
STROUDSBURG — For the first time in almost a decade
Stroudsburg High School baseball has a chance to stand alone at the top of the mountain
With about two weeks left in the regular season
the Mountaineers have sole possession of first place in the EPC North Division
and they have a strong chance to end the season that way for the first time since 2016
when they won their second straight division title after going undefeated in 2015
Stroudsburg has finished at the top more recently
That was the case in 2017 (with Pocono Mountain East) 2018 (East)
Matt Suarez's squad isn't looking for another tie
Stroudsburg defeated East to split the regular season series
then beat South at home 7-2 to sweep the series
More: Pocono Mountain East boys basketball coach Mark Dudley resigns
What more impressive about the latter was South took an early 2-0 lead and Suarez wasn't at the game due to personal reasons
So the Mounties had to dig out of a hole with AJ Denny holding down the fort
"We've been in that position a lot this year where we've been down two
After trailing 2-0 heading into the bottom of the third inning
scoring six runs off the strength of two homers
but he found the sweet spot against South's James Rabbitt to send one over the fence
"He's been getting us singles and has a high on-base percentage," Ferguson said
"His home run really set a tone for the game
Ferguson added that the chance to take first place in the division was a topic of discussion
but the team was focused on "taking care of business" once the game started
With only one team left on the schedule with a winning record
Stroudsburg's goal of winning the division outright is there for the taking
But the final stretch will still be a race as South and East are both 5-2
meaning there is no room to underestimate an opponent
South and Stroudsburg are both going to the 6A District 11 playoffs
whoever wins that ultimately gets the last laugh
Knowing the playoffs are around the corner is why Stroudsburg isn't letting up anytime soon
our bats staying hot and doing what we've done all season," Ferguson said."
Stroudsburg is about to experience a unique cultural infusion with the opening of Flavour of Brazil
said this new establishment will bring the rich flavors and vibrant culture of Brazil right to the heart of Stroudsburg
his plan was to open a full-fledged Brazilian restaurant
he pivoted and decided to create something just as special
“I thought what could I open that people will love
He said Flavour of Brazil will feature a selection of authentic Brazilian beverages
cookies and chocolates that guests might not find anywhere else
The shop will also carry exclusive products imported directly from Brazil
allowing customers to experience a true taste of the country
“We're going to have prepackaged products that are coming straight from Brazil for people to purchase,” he said
Castro said one of the highlights of the shop will be its signature coffee
which will be produced in partnership with a third-party supplier
Castro said he is excited to offer a coffee experience that reflects the quality and flavors of Brazil’s renowned culture
“Our [coffee] is going to be an exclusive product [that] nobody is going to have
For those looking to unwind or work in a cozy setting
the coffee shop and market will be offering comfortable seating where customers can come relax or bring their laptops
“We're going to have a few tables that have two chairs each
and we're also going to have a counter where people can sit and enjoy their meals like if they were in a diner,” he said
Castro said the coffee shop is near completion
with the construction phase almost finished
The next step is to undergo building inspections before officially opening its doors
His goal is to open by the first day of spring
Flavour of Brazil will welcome customers six days a week
Castro said he looks forward to sharing his Brazilian heritage with the Stroudsburg community and looks forwards to seeing everyone

Cipparulo and De Oliveria both emphasized that the idea for the rally came from a collective student effort
They saw how many students on campus were ready to take a stand and decided it was time to speak up

The Shanti House project is under contract
The project is a proposed apartment complex in the 600 block of Main Street in Stroudsburg
Axria provided a press release confirming the intended changes to the Shanti House project
The initially planned 65-foot structure is now proposed to be 85 feet
which is the maximum allowed height for a building in Stroudsburg and would be the tallest in the borough
“The firm initially envisioned a 100-foot structure
but made a conscious design decision to scale back in order to better complement the surrounding architecture and maintain the character of the area,” Axria’s press release states
the proposed number of residential units in the original building has increased from 50 to 97
A separate building in another empty lot on the 600 block of Main Street is proposed to house 43 units
These changes would have to be presented to and approved by Stroudsburg Borough Council
I am thrilled that we're seeing tangible results at last
with a new owner under contract to buy the property,” said Abell
“It has taken a long time and many concessions from the Borough
but I am hopeful it will be transformative for our town and downtown businesses.”
Stroudsburg Mayor Michael Moreno stated on April 11 that while he is pleased that the project is under contract
the plans presented at the April 1 council meeting were not yet presented to the Historical Architectural Review Board
shared his thoughts on what council should look for
including ensuring that the presented building has some historical charm to it
and ensuring that continuity between the old buildings and new architecture design won’t be lost
Moreno thanked the Stroudsburg school board and the Monroe County commissioners for fully passing the LERTA ordinance in January 2025 after five years
leading up to council being approached by an organization looking to build housing and storefronts in vacant portions of downtown Stroudsburg that were “not serving anyone.” He also added that the project will help with the housing crisis and property taxes in the borough
“We’re elated as a council,” Moreno concluded
“We are very excited that the Shanti House project is finally moving forward,” Kopp texted in a statement to the Pocono Record
Kopp texted: “The developers are working with the Zoning Officer
and the Planning Commission and Zoning Hearing Board to put together a plan for the project.” Kopp also confirmed there was not an update on the project at the April 15 council meeting or other borough meetings during that week
Calling all cat and coffee lovers: There’s a purr-fect new spot coming to the Poconos and it promises to leave you feline fine. Owner Amanda Counterman is bringing her passion for paws to life with the Cozy Kitty Café that will be on McConnell Street in Stroudsburg between Wells Fargo and McDonald's
I have a cat that I walk with a harness on just like a dog
I just have a passion for them,” said Counterman
This isn’t your average café where you stare at your phone or laptop and pretend to work
Counterman said this is a two-part experience where one side is your classic coffee shop with prepackaged goodies from local small businesses
so you can feel good about supporting the community while getting your caffeine fix
The other side will be a cat lounge full of adorable
where the only thing stronger than espresso is the temptation to leave with a furry new roommate
“I wanted to open a very fun environment for all ages to come in and I wanted to do it for a good cause to get these cats homes,” she said
These aren’t just any cats; they’re shelter rescues hoping to charm their way into forever homes
Counterman said there will be an admission fee to enter the cat lounge
with the money going straight to the care of our four-legged friends
you can now justify your 12th visit of the week by calling it a “donation.”
More: New Stroudsburg coffee shop Flavour of Brazil sets opening date, hours
But before you grab your toddler and your own cat for a family outing
Children under 6 won’t be allowed in the cat lounge because
this isn’t a bring-your-own-cat kind of place
There’s also a waiver that will need to be signed before you enter the kitty lounge to protect both guests and the cats
because nobody wants to leave with scratches they didn’t come in there with
“Cats can have a tendency to get overwhelmed
They can scratch [you] but that’s typical cat behavior,” she said
Counterman said the community response has been paws-itively overwhelming
After getting love from the locals at this year’s St
she feels confident the café will be the cat’s meow
“I was completely overwhelmed; everyone loved the inflatable cats we had
I’ve been receiving so many calls and people are donating and I’m just so very appreciative and humbled,” she said
She said progress is coming along and the cats are set to arrive in May
She will be giving them some time to get situated in their new temporary home
which means you’ll soon have the purr-fect excuse to cancel plans and go pet some cats
“I’m letting them acclimate for about a week and a half before I have a grand opening
so they get used to the environment,” she said
Counterman said she’s aiming to have the grand opening between May 31 and June 7
depending on how quickly things fall into place
She said the hours of operation will be from 10 a.m
giving you plenty of time to sneak in a coffee break with a side of whiskers
She’s still figuring out what days they’ll be open

A Monroe County fire victim is thanking her heroes and speaking out about the tragedy
Tomorrow will be one month since the deadly fire broke out in East Stroudsburg
While we still do not know the cause of the blaze at the the Wander Inn Apartment Building
a couple who made it out is counting their blessings
And while the community continues to mourn the loss
there’s also the stories of human triumph born out of this tragedy
there was a reason they were there at that time
And I honestly know that I have a purpose here because things could’ve ended much differently for us
Miller smelled the smoke first and then saw the flames out her front window
She quickly learned the whole front porch of the Wander Inn Apartment Building was on fire and escaping out the front door wasn’t an option
Instead she ran to wake up her fiance Jeremiah and was able to open a side window
trying to figure out where it was coming from at first
I see a woman with blond hair screaming for help."
So I climbed out onto the air conditioner that was right below my window
maybe three or four feet below my window and people were down there telling me to jump so I jumped."
"We see another elderly man coming out and he’s blowing out smoke out of his mouth and that’s when I knew immediately
we’re not going to be able to get this man out the same way we did with her."
Robinson remembered his neighbors had a ladder and ran to grab it
Someone filming the blaze from across the street caught the brave bystanders running to help
One was Stroud Area Regional Police Detective Chris Shelly
"I watched [him] pull Jeremiah out the window by his head and shoulders
"I actually had no fear going up the ladder
So the fact that it was over 500 pounds on the ladder that holds 300 pounds
the fact that I didn’t drop him or fall backwards
there’s no doubt in my mind that the good lord was with me that day
Shelly shows us the small part of the window on the right side that allowed the couple to escape
"The only moment I will take from this and I will remember this till the day that I die
Jeremiah had smoke inhalation and burns on his hands and Susan suffered a broken arm
The pair are now recovering and in a new home thanks to the outpouring of community support
"We’re just really grateful that we’re here and able to share the experience
and grateful for the people that were there
They had just moved in a month prior and lost everything
Organizations like Shelly’s Olsen Christmas Wish are helping them build it back
still coming together and you know trying to put some light on this tragedy."
A memorial service was held last weekend for the couple who died in the fire
And a benefit is being held later this month at the American Legion to further help all the families affected by this tragedy

District Justice Krista Anzini on Wednesday bound over all charges against Joseph Quattrochi
including but not limited to conspiracy to commit aggravated assault
hindering apprehension and riot with intent to commit a felony
Surveillance video from the Wawa on West Main Street that was played at the hearing for Quattrochi
showed Quattrochi family members and friends park at the front of the store and head in to shop about an hour before the incident that happened around 8:20 p.m
Prosecution: Man charged with fatal Wawa shooting told girlfriend he shot 'some kid'
in which one of Gearhart’s friends said something offensive to the Quattrochi group
Video showed the Quattrochi group circle out of the parking lot and move to the rear parking lot of the Westgate Apartments
the white Avenger and Joseph Quattrochi's truck parked near each other at the mouth of the parking lot as the latter returned
four cars that were with Quattrochi's group returned to the WaWa parking area
where surveillance video showed the group heading toward the store's entrance
the Quattrochi group surrounded and assaulted the friend of Gearhart who had insulted them
Gearhart enters the melee to help his friend and is thrown against a rack in the corner of the store before being thrown to the floor behind a refrigerated kiosk
That is where Andrew Quattrochi is charged with shooting him
Raymond said she learned during the investigation that the Quattrochis were there that day to visit the grave of a family member at Stroudsburg Cemetery
Monroe County District Attorney Michael Mancuso argued the reason Joseph Quattrochi went back to the store was due to being told what had happened there by the son who drove the Avenger
along with Joseph Quattrochi's return inside the store
neglect in stopping the fight and assistance helping Andrew Quattrochi flee the scene
said his client did not know about the pending assault
did not assist in the assault and worked with law enforcement to turn over Andrew Quattrochi
along with evidence outlined in a search warrant
Joseph Quattrochi will be formally arraigned March 20
the same day as Andrew Quattrochi's arraignment is scheduled to take place

The Stroudsburg Little Bethel Historical Association (SLBHA) is excited to officially open its doors to the public on Saturday
inviting visitors to explore its rich history
Parham said the Stroudsburg Little Bethel African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church
holds a significant place in the community’s history
the structure fell into disrepair during the 1970s
the SLBHA has been diligently working for nearly two decades to restore the building to its former glory
“We're very happy to be at the point where we are now
because it’s been a long road to where we are presently
In addition to the restoration efforts, the SLBHA is excited to introduce a new lending library as part of its commitment to education and cultural enrichment. She said the library will feature a diverse collection of fiction and non-fiction books written by or about African Americans
and the idea came about after receiving a huge donation
“We got a donation of over 200 books and most of them were written by Black authors or about the Black experience so it seemed like a great fit for who we are and what were about.”

Parham said the grand opening marks a major milestone in the organization's mission to preserve and celebrate local African American history
“Little Bethel was a historically important part of the community here and [we want to] reinvigorate it as a space for the community,” Parham said
All are welcome to stop by and enjoy refreshments and learn more about this historical landmark

STROUDSBURG — It's sometimes hard to imagine a dominating athlete being nervous before a performance
but even the best of all-time have to find ways to manage nerves before stepping into the spotlight
Anna Kirby is still working to get to that level
but the Stroudsburg High School senior has left her mark in the water
owning several school records in the freestyle
And she's done it while managing nerves of her own
"I always have nerves before a race," Kirby said
but I know that I'm gonna have a good time in the end."
being nervous is seemingly part of the process before the race begins
but there's a moment where the nerves aren't an issue anymore
"Whenever I get up on the block and they say
'Take your mark,' everything just goes blank
Kirby added that she can't hear much of the crowd noise or the words from her teammates to go faster
it's more of a hyper-focused determination to win the race
It wasn't always like that for the record-breaking swimmer
and then it would affect her on the block," Conklyn said
"But she's learned to internalize and use those nerves to help get her excited
using them for a positive rather than a negative."
For Mom: Pleasant Valley, Methacton honor Toni Bush's late mother in Bears win
Kirby took a break from swimming a few years ago as her interests were in another sport: field hockey
But after some time off from swimming in her middle school years
she found her passion for the pool once again
I really enjoy swimming and I want to pursue swimming.' So she stopped all her other sports and became a year-round swimmer again
"The amount of progress that she's made has been tremendous
she broke the 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke records
Kirby immediately followed that up with a record-breaking performance in districts
recording a 50-yard freestyle time of 24.18 seconds
good enough for Stroudsburg's first female district champion since 2005
breaking her 100 free record again to finish third
breaking both the 50 and 100 freestyle multiple times en route to winning the 2025 district title in both events
the first Stroudsburg swimmer to win multiple golds in the same year
"I just wanted to leave my mark on Stroudsburg
Get a time that no one's seen before," Kirby said about her motivation to reach the next level
Her mindset served as an affirmation as Kirby did exactly that - when she broke the 100-yard backstroke record (again) in early January
she became the first Mountie girl to complete it in under a minute with a time of 59.64
but the historic mark didn't even last 30 days as Kirby bested her time when she completed the 100-yard backstroke in 58.83 seconds
the future Division I swimmer also broke the record for the 100-yard butterfly that same day
Kirby is wrapping up her senior year and preparing for her next stop: Marist
"Stroudsburg has had our fair share of DI swimmers over the years
but swimming as a whole has gotten tremendously faster over the past couple of years."
For someone who used to be nervous before races
Now people will see her name all over Stroudsburg's record board for years to come
An East Stroudsburg man is accused of trying to sneak a live animal past the Transportation Security Administration in New Jersey
According to a TSA press release
an East Stroudsburg man who was not identified by name tried to sneak a live turtle past security at Newark Liberty International Airport on Friday
The man was given a pat-down after he tripped an alarm
and it was determined that he was concealing something in his groin area
The man pulled the turtle out of his pants when asked if there was something hidden in them
He told officials that the turtle was a red-ear slider turtle and officials estimated the turtle to be 5 inches long
they confiscated the turtle and indicated they would contact the U.S
Fish and Wildlife Service as well as local animal control officials
the TSA's New Jersey federal security director
commended officers for conducting the pat-down in a “very professional manner.” “We have seen travelers try to conceal knives and other weapons on their person
however I believe this is the first time we have come across someone who was concealing a live animal down the front of his pants,” Carter said in the press release
the turtle was not harmed by the man’s actions.”
