Matthew Sturtevant ’26 loves data and sports
He also loves the flexibility of his Keene State education
which allows him to combine those passions
It helps to explain why his short list of possible careers includes working for a professional sports franchise’s data analytics team
native majoring in mathematics and minoring in business management
Matthew is seizing every opportunity to conceptualize and complete an education aligned with his pursuits
but the interdisciplinarity of Keene State’s fast-growing data analytics program has given him a pathway
not to mention the ability to help fashion and present “cool sports-related data projects.”
preparing the data and visualizations for those who might not be as mathematically inclined is another
Making that bridge as the presenter is everything; it helps the audience to understand the story and science behind the numbers.”
Keene State’s data analytics program merges expertise from seven academic departments
and provides students with core skills they can apply immediately in an in-demand field
and how to tell compelling stories with data is a needed skill for every field,” said Sarah McGregor
“Our program is different in that we began with faculty from mathematics
and computer science working with industry to build a truly holistic and interdisciplinary program that focuses on the hard skills of how to manage and visualize data
and the soft skills of telling compelling and ethical stories.”
so students who major in data analytics will also minor in a field of their choice
“This helps them to build up a targeted portfolio of data analysis projects to bring into the workforce
Matthew says there is no doubt that that strong underpinning
like the freedom he has to help shape his education
“I’ve always known that I liked math,” he says
plus my interest in data analytics and sports
has created this perfect academic marriage for me
Any sports fan knows that teams rely heavily on numbers to make decisions
and that kind of data use will only get bigger.”
one for each of his classes and all sports-themed
allowed Matthew to earn a minor in data analytics
He also presented his project findings at the College’s annual Academic Excellence Celebration
The first three semester-long projects were titled “NBA Salary Factors,” “How to Build The Perfect Fantasy Football Team,” and “NFL Combine Analysis.” A fourth
tied the three works together with more creative and thoughtful insight and analysis
examined how NBA statistics affect NBA salaries
studied the strength of correlation between the player stats and their corresponding salaries
and came up with a regression equation that could predict a player’s salary
He said presenting has sharpened his public-speaking skills and helped him appreciate the importance of being clear and avoiding technical jargon and the specialized language of data and numbers
Matthew says small class size and easy ways to connect and engage with faculty have benefited him greatly
And they steer you to opportunities outside the classroom to enhance your learning experience
Those are the things I wanted at Keene State
He is a member of the College’s Ultimate Frisbee Club
an outreach officer for the student-run Make-A-Wish Club
watching sports and breaking down competition with curiosity

STURTEVANT — A 66-year-old Sturtevant man has been arrested in connection to the April 7 homicide of a 26-year-old Milwaukee man
Jose Silva is charged with one count of harboring or aiding a felon
The maximum sentence if convicted is a fine of up to $25,000
Online court records show a $75,000 cash bond was set during an April 11 hearing
Silva is scheduled to appear in court April 16
officers responded to a call regarding a man lying on the ground near East Frontage and 7 Mile roads in Caledonia on April 7
Investigators determined the man had a gunshot wound to the head
Officers reviewed security footage from a nearby business and gas station
the footage shows a Silverado truck pull into the gas station
the video shows the truck moving to the roadway where the victim was found
a blue Lexus parks in front of the truck and several people
The footage then reportedly shows the victim
who was later determined to be a passenger in the Lexus
standing outside the passenger side of the Silverado
a loud “pop” reportedly can be heard and the victim falls to the ground
The driver of the Silverado then gets back into the truck and drives away
officers determined that the Silverado was registered to Silva
who had reported the vehicle as stolen on April 7
Silva reportedly was seen driving the truck in Chicago
Silva allegedly told officers that he was driving the truck when the shooting occurred
but denied that anyone else was in the vehicle
the surveillance video reportedly shows at least one other person was in the truck
An autopsy performed by the medical examiner reportedly found glass fragments on the victim
Investigators did not immediately respond to comment Friday regarding information about a shooting suspect

Nineteen brave Ramona students (and three adventurous chaperones) embarked on a backpacking experience to culminate their “Wild LA” J-Term course
J-Term is an opportunity for students to take a brief pause from traditional coursework for two weeks in January to explore topics that they may never otherwise be introduced to
Teachers have a chance to share their passions and enthusiasm in various areas
a two-week wilderness survival and backpacking class held in January for beginners
They departed at dawn on a Saturday for a 4-mile hike to camp but took a slight detour to sneak a peek at Sturtevant Falls
a 50-foot waterfall in the Angeles National Forest
backpackers were welcomed by Guest and Hospitality Manager
who shared that Ramona students were the first to visit since 2020 after the Bobcat fire destroyed parts of the camp infrastructure
The group spent one night at Sturtevant Camp but had the opportunity to explore the surrounding area
and enjoy leisure activities while remaining “off the grid.” Upon completion of the hike back
students were asked to share their feedback and one quickly responded “we should stay for additional nights because it was refreshing to take a break to connect with nature.”
J-Term instructor and English Department Chair shared “This was a chance not only to connect with the rich history of the Hiking Era in the San Gabriel Mountains but with each other.”

Finding potential employees has been difficult for years
but ManpowerGroup is taking a different approach
The Milwaukee-based staffing company partnered with Walmart to put some of its hiring offices in seven pilot job hubs
In September ManpowerGroup officially opened a location at a Walmart in Sturtevant in Racine County
It’s the only branch in Wisconsin that has a hub
senior vice president at ManpowerGroup in the United States
said this is an opportunity to meet potential employees in for jobs that range from basic financing roles to industrial warehouse roles
assembly jobs and “skilled technical roles.”

If they already have a job they can explore new avenues,” Namboothiry said
“They can enter into a career conversation; they can talk about what’s next for their careers; they can talk about their interests and pursue new areas with Manpower helping them navigate their careers.”
Namboothiry said he would like to increase the number of locations to 50 to 100 in Walmart stores during the next several years if these stores are successful
“We’re still working through the details on how does this model work
It’s a learning curve for us to and it is for Walmart too,” Namboothiry said
“There’s no better avenue other than places like Walmart where you got a high concentration of talent walking in ..
the company has seen increased interest and foot traffic
we are already seeing hundreds of candidates walk in each day into these hubs and engage in a career conversation and apply for a job," Namboothiry said
Walmart senior director issued a statement on the partnership:
"We aim to provide products and services in our stores that enhance the shopping experience and contribute to a better quality of life for our customers
One of the pathways to a quality life is through employment."
Although the program is still in the early states
Namboothiry said the company expects a “massive influx” of potential employees
“Talent scarcity is something employers have been facing,” Namboothiry said
Manpower does well in this space in terms of being that talent attraction company for us to be able to build a pool of talent
