- A former nursing home mogul from Suffern was sentenced Thursday to 3 years in federal prison for a $38 million employment tax fraud scheme involving nursing homes he owned across the country
Department of Labor for the employee 401K Benefit Plan he sponsored
His sentence included paying restitution of $5 million and a $100,000 fine
Schwartz faced a maximum prison term of five years for employment tax fraud and a $250,000 fine from U.S
owned and managed the Skyline Management Group LLC
Skyline Management and other Schwartz-related companies owned and managed 95 health care and rehabilitation facilities operating in at least 11 states
Attorney for New Jersey Alina Habba said in a news release
making him responsible for all of its financial decisions regarding the daily operation of its health care and rehabilitation facilities
According to documents filed in this case and statements made in court
Schwartz failed to pay employment taxes relating to numerous health care and rehabilitation facilities that Skyline operated
The indictment charged that Schwartz was required to pay over to the Internal Revenue Service trust fund taxes withheld from the pay of employees of Skyline Management and related companies

Suicide fencing at Hudson Valley bridges Over 100 people have died by suicide at 5 Hudson Valley bridges. Could fencing help?
As an administrator of the Skyline employee 401K plan
Schwartz had an obligation to file an annual Form 5500 financial report for 2018 with the U.S
Schwartz's failure to file the IRS form related to the company's 401K retirement plan carried a maximum potential penalty of 10 years in prison and the same $250,000 fine
Schwartz also owned and controlled an insurance brokerage business
Schwartz built up the Skyline nursing home empire through his brokerage business. The 22-count indictment also accused Schwartz of a widespread scheme of self-dealing, which prosecutors argued enriched him and helped finance his business expansion that allowed him to purchase dozens of nursing homes across the country

The Department of Justice argued that his failures to pay employment and unemployment taxes affected more than 15,000 employees at 95 facilities in 11 states
His IRS debt reportedly led to the 2018 collapse of the management firm and its Skyline Healthcare subsidiary
Some states took over his facilities through receivership over concerns about residents getting food and medicine
Schwartz also has reportedly been criminally charged in Arkansas in a separate $3.6 million case of Medicaid fraud and failing to pay more than $2 million withheld from his Arkansas employees’ paychecks from July 2017 to July 2018
according to the Arkansas Attorney General’s Office
“Schwartz admits he willfully failed to pay over employment taxes
basically stealing money from his employees and the IRS,” the FBI's Newark Special Agent in Charge James E
Dennehy said when Schwartz pleaded guilty in January 2024
"Other fraudsters currently committing the same fraud should pay attention to the lesson Schwartz learned the hard way – don't cheat the taxman," Dennehy said

The Mounties put on a third period show and came away from the NYSPHSAA Division I championship game at LECOM Harborcenter Sunday with a 3-1 win over West Genesee
It was the program’s third state title in three seasons
"Our expectation was to win a state championship again this year
so when that final buzzer went off all the hard work we put in
really paid off," Suffern junior forward Sean Tyrell said after earning MVP honors
"It shows what the culture is like with this team
I was younger last year and didn't have the role I had this year
From a team perspective this one doesn't feel any different
but from an individual perspective it was a little different
We've got two state championships in two years
Suffern won last season with an experienced team and repeated with only a handful of veterans on the roster
"It's awesome," Mounties senior goalie C.J
Sgueglia said by phone on the bus ride home
These longtime state powers know each other well
so it was a high stress contest the entire way
"We knew it was going to be a defensive battle
a tight game," said Suffern coach Rob Schelling
"One of the things we stressed to the boys was to be patient
It was going to be hard to score and I was happy with the fact they stayed composed."
Tyrell sent a pass across the ice to Matt Norum
who went over the left shoulder of Wildcats goalie Luke Beck three minutes into the third to open the scoring
there was an emotional shift," Schelling said
"We knew going into the third period that first goal was going to be huge
Sean can explode up the ice and his speed was a big advantage for us."
Tyrell chased a puck down in neutral ice nine minutes later and with a power play about to expire
got a defender on his left hip and scored top shelf to give the Mounties a 2-0 cushion
"I had a really good chance in the first period that I missed so I was pumped the rest of the game," Tyrell said
I knew something special was going to happen
so once I saw there was a forward and a defenseman with their feet toward me
I knew it was time for me to go and I put that one home."
Mounties defenders Schaefer Pinotti and Sean McCarthy both played heavy and productive minutes
but West Genesee’s Jacob Pensabe rattled some nerves when he scored on a wrister from the point with 2:10 remaining to half the lead
"That kid literally started playing hockey three years ago," Schelling noted
we needed another goalie and he decided to give it a shot and now
a starting goalie and all-tournament in the final four and a state champion."
Sgueglia is the rare Suffern headliner who didn't grow up in skates
"I have to give credit to my coaches and my team," he said
The guys in practice help make me better and I have a strong work ethic
Phil McCarthy added an empty-net goal with 30 seconds to play
helping the Mounties (22-2) gain a measure of revenge
Pinotti and Matt Norum earned all-tournament honors
These guys don't need to stop for directions
Suffern had another state title run mapped out before the season began and scored four unanswered goals Saturday to post a 4-1 win over Shenendehowa in a NYSPHSAA Division I semifinal at LECOM Harborcenter in Buffalo
who came home with a championship a year ago
Suffern will be making a fourth consecutive appearance in the Division I title game and will play West Genesee at 2 p.m
we had a lot of guys returning so we knew we'd be in the mix and we won it," Mounties coach Rob Schelling said
'How good are we going to be?' We don't really have many guys who got any ice time last year
From a coaching standpoint it's just been incredible because they work so hard and they did everything the right way."
Suffern also brought home a championship in 2022
Most of the newcomers in the rotation have been watching games and taking mental notes at Sport-O-Rama for years and years
"And that is the great thing about our program and our tradition," Mounties senior Sean McCarthy said
we've been coming to the games on Friday nights
While this kind of a run is not unprecedented in Section 1
it does put Suffern in select company with two other legacy programs
Suffern is the first team from Section 1 to play in four consecutive NYSPHSAA title games since Somers football
Lakeland field hockey advanced to 11 finals between 2009 and 2019
Yorktown lacrosse made five state title game appearances between 1989 and 1993
Living up to expectations season after season is not easy
"It makes us work harder," Mounties senior Phil McCarthy said
how a lot of people kind of overlooked us and kind of said
"Suffern isn't as good as it was,' but we definitely use it as motivation and we're right back here in the finals
I learned so much from watching the seniors."
Extending a string of 15 consecutive Section 1 championship appearances will likely require even more dedication in the future
Everyone plays their role to the best of their ability."
All of the playoff experience paid dividends on Saturday
Julien Overton came in on a diagonal six minutes into the second period and got the Plainsmen on the board with a 4-on-4 goal
redirecting a Philip McCarthy shot from the top of the circle less than four minutes later
Suffern kept the pressure on but ran into some bad luck
hitting the goalie's stick handle and the crossbar in the closing minutes of the second period
"We were down 2-0 in the semifinals last year and we came back and won,"Tyrell said
we can come back and win.' We're always there for each other
The game plan from coach was to keep doing our thing even if we did get down a goal
We knew it was going to come eventually and we'd bump in a few."
Sgueglia made a point-blank save with 11:04 to play and McCarthy unleashed a power-play wrister four minutes later that made the water bottle jump
Sgueglia got in the way again when a Suffern defender fell down
leaving him 1-on-1 with Tyler Rodriguez with 2:55 to play
Tyrell centered to McCarthy for a 3-1 lead
Suffern (21-2) has gone back and forth with West Genny for years and fell 4-1 when the upstate-downstate rivals met Dec
"At the beginning of the season our goal is to play until the final game," Tyrell said
"We want to be with each other as long as possible."
Sf: Phil McCarthy 3G; Matthew Norum 2G; Sean Tyrell 2G
Note: Tyrell recorded his 100th career point
The Mounties advance to the NYSPHSAA final four in Buffalo for the fourth straight season and will play Shenendehowa
Ramapo police said Walmart in Suffern was evacuated Sunday
Chris Franklin said two parties entered the store at around 7:15 p.m
Sunday and informed employees that they had a bomb and left shortly after
prompting a temporary evacuation of the store
Franklin said the threat did not appear credible but the incident remains under investigation
All patrons were safely evacuated from the building and no explosives were found in that incident
Franklin said it was still unclear if the two bomb threats were related
Anyone with information on the bomb threat made in Suffern is asked to call the Ramapo Police Department at 845-357-2400
Anyone with information related to the threat made against the Ardsley Country Club is asked to contact the Irvington Police Department at 914-591-8080
that a $19.4 million project to update two 1950s-era Thruway bridges in Suffern is now underway
of Mount Vernon are slated to repair concrete substructure and steel superstructure
as well as completely replace the concrete deck and parapets with precast concrete deck panels on the bridge over Route 202 and Wayne Avenue
Crews will also construct new bridge joints on the bridge span over the Mahwah River
“My administration is firmly committed to rehabilitating roads and bridges across the state,” Hochul said
ensuring a smoother ride for the tens of thousands of regional travelers who use this vital Thruway corridor each day.”
Of interest: Trucks crashing into Thruway bridges are a 'plague.' Who pays for repairs, traffic misery?
The Thruway Authority said work on the bridges
both of which are at least 70 years old and within a tenth of a mile apart
Other project improvements will include rehabilitating median drainage structures
building new median barriers and installing new pavement markings
The New York State Thruway Authority said drivers will encounter some traffic delays and lane shifts between exit 14B near Airmont Road and exit 15 near New Jersey Route 17 as the project develops
Three travel lanes in each direction will remain open on I-87 throughout the duration of the renovations
which the New York State Thruway Authority estimates over 120,000 vehicles travel daily
The Thruway Authority said motorists should be alert and follow the posted speed limits in work zones
Work on the project is scheduled to be completed by fall of 2026
BREWSTER — Sometimes winning is about being lucky
The Suffern ice hockey team won its 38th Section 1 championship in a 4-0 shutout at Brewster Ice Arena Sunday thanks to a mix of both — but mostly Suffern relied on talent
who've been to the state Division 1 championship the last four years and won it two of the last three years
weathered a scoreless first period against second-seed Rivertowns before scoring two goals in 20 seconds in the second period en route to the win
who has been on varsity for three years but only began starting this year
the shutout was his second major performance in as many games
He also was between the pipes in Suffern's 5-0 semifinal win
The luck part in Suffern's win came when a first-period Legends shot deflected off of a Suffern defenseman's stick
going over Sgueglia and striking the crossbar
gobbled up shots and added one spectacular glove save on Saxon Frank's ripped one-timer with 5:49 left in the first period
He had stopped everything shot at him until 11:09 was left in the second period
he made a good save on a deflected shot but didn't get all of the puck
which slipped behind him and was on the goal line
Watch: Suffern defeats Mamaroneck in Section 1 ice hockey semifinal at Sport-O-Rama
Suffern freshman forward Tynan Cosgrove was in the right spot at the right time
pushing it over the line to score not only his first goal of the season but what proved to be the game-winner
The loss was the first this season fo now-21-1 Rivertowns
will play in the state Division 1 regional semifinals Saturday vs
That game will be played at Ice Time in Newburgh
with the puck drop tentatively scheduled for 10:30 a.m
Anthony Bieber had the assist on Cosgrove's score
which came with 11:09 remaining in the second period
Bieber's name had just been announced over the PA when Suffern senior Sean Tyrrell netted his first of two goals
it was of the right-place/right-time category
the puck caromed off toward O'Hagan's right post
Two goals in 20 seconds and the momentum arrow clearly pointed Suffern's way
Suffern went on a power play after a Legends slash
O'Hagan made a great stop on a point-blank one-timer but
Tyrrell slammed in a rebound off a Bieber shot to put the Mounties up 3-0 with 8:34 still left in the second period
Any slim chance Rivertowns had for a comeback was undercut by it taking a couple more penalties in the period
one a five-minute major that carried over to the third period
But good defense and a couple of fine O'Hagan stops from in tight kept the score 3-0
which has now won the last six Section 1 D1 championships (none was held in 2021 due to COVID) also displayed good D with Sean McCarthy blocking a shot
Sgueglia had a very good save on a Aidan Balkin shot
Suffern's final goal was McCarthy's long empty-netter with 2:56 left in the third period
said his team had enjoyed its finest season
motivated in part by its heartbreaking playoff loss last year to the Mount Pleasant Ice Cats
"We never wanted to feel that pain again," he said
Sunday's pain came with too many penalties and Suffern ultimately playing harder
adding: "They were just more hungry than us
we had so much momentum going," Sgueglia said
crediting Suffern's dominance at hockey to its "great culture," saying
who followed three older brothers onto the team
indicated he's optimistic about his team's chances going forward this season
"We have depth and we're a team that always has each other's back,” Tyrell said

Sixth-grade art students at Suffern Middle School created small medieval-style towers using cardboard plaster and other materials
The students designed windows doors and decorative borders
focusing on how towers symbolize protection and community
students explored the concept of belonging by drawing connections between how medieval towers provided safety and how people create spaces of belonging in their lives
"Medieval towers weren't just for defense," said art teacher Julia Pickard
"They were placed where people came together and felt safe
just like how communities today make us feel like we belong."

SUFFERN — The saying has been around in one form or another for decades
even said something to the effect that the best offense is a good defense
Judging from what occurred during Friday night's rivalry game between North Rockland and Suffern
it would be hard to find fault with the logic
North Rockland scored four touchdowns in routing the host Mounties 30-0 at Suffern Middle School
Three of those touchdowns occurred after North Rockland got the ball by stopping Suffern on fourth down
North Rockland won the battle of the trenches on both sides of the ball
The Red Raiders limited Suffern star running back Jeph Joseph to just 43 yards on 11 carries
sometimes nailing him in the backfield the second he got the handoff
the North Rockland line created holes that allowed its own star running back,
Johnson never seems to need much of a hole to do that
Given his speed and side-to-side quickness
And Friday he moved through holes both big and small while raising his season touchdown total to 17
14 and 50 yards and totalled 201 yards in all as North Rockland won its fifth straight game to increase its season mark to 6-2
Play of the gameThe tone of the game was set early
Noah Hahn recovered a Mounties' opening squib kickoff that kangarooed high off the turf and then off the hands of a North Rockland player on the North Rockland 38
Suffern couldn't muster much from there and ended up punting
It was Suffern's failure to convert on fourth down that led to much of its misery
North Rockland scored after Suffern turned the ball over on fourth down on the North Rockland 7 and Suffern's 44- and 46-yard line
the Mounties had a third-and-goal from the North Rockland 1
A poor snap and then a fourth-down fumbled snap gave the ball to North Rockland on its own 7
Johnson was galloping 53 yards for the score to put the Red Raiders up 6-0 with 5:51 left in the second quarter
North Rockland's scored again before the first half ended
Suffern went to work from its own 36 after getting the kickoff
But North Rockland got penetration and a rush lost a yard
resulting in Suffern turning over the ball
North Rockland made it a two-touchdown advantage when
after quarterback Chase Perini found wide receiver Ryan Jaslow open for a 29-yard pickup
he found him again with an 18-yard scoring strike
Perini threw the ball perfectly over a defensive back's hands and into the hands of Jaslow
That occurred with just 13.7 seconds left in the half
Johnson then ran in a two-point conversion
An early Suffern second-half drive quickly fizzled after quarterback Mason Polombo hit Finnegan Mitchell with a quick pass over the middle for a 12-yard gain to the Suffern 44
on a fourth-and-one from the North Rocland 48
It lined up to punt but instead Collin Pringle took the snap and broke for the right sideline
North Rockland subsequently had a 46-yard touchdown called back for a hold but didn't seem fazed
immediately starting a drive that was helped out by unsportsmanlike conduct call on Suffern
Johnson ran up the middle and into the end zone
After Suffern's next possession ended in a punt a couple of plays after a huge sack by Michael Garofal-Heavner
That came with 2:44 left in the third quarter
North Rockland stopped Suffern on another fourth down
It later got its final two points via a safety off a short pass with Johnson making the tackle
Javon Lawrence had four carries for 38 yards
Perini had six for 29 and Chris Norman had three for 23
Perini was also five-for-six passing for 57 yards
Polumbo threw for 66 yards and rushed for 29
Jake Tarrant had 34 yards receiving and Mitchell had 32
Michael Cromwell picked up 31 yards rushing for the Mounties.
Jamar Aguillard led Suffern's defense with four tackles
who praised his assistant coaches' role in the win
specifically naming defensive coordinator Joe Gizzi
said his team's "physicality" was a big reason for the win
We have elite speed on offense and defense."
Johnson pointed to both the work of his offensive line and his speed when talking about his scores
