SUGARCREEK TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WKEF) -- A new development is forcing a small, local cemetery to be moved, leaving a community concerned. Dayton 24/7 Now's Gwyneth Falloon spoke with Sugarcreek Township leaders and residents to find out what’s happening.
“Even if you're legally allowed to do something, it doesn't make it right," said longtime township resident, Jodi Puterbaugh.
Puterbaugh, like many other Sugarcreek Township residents, are now outraged over the relocation of those buried at the Huston Cemetery.
“We are talking about dead bodies that should be left alone to rest," she said. "It is a tiny, tiny spot on that acreage.”
Trustee Fred Cramer said last fall, the township approved a resolution for the property’s owners to develop that land, including the cemetery, into what will become the “Feedwire Farm” subdivision.
“We wish we never had to move them. That was our original intent," he stated. “When the county engineer did the surveying and said, ‘Oh, that's in the right of way, and whether you have the development or not, we must move the cemetery.’”
That new information is now sparking confusion and frustration amongst the community.
“I attended the township meeting very early on just to hear about the development," Puterbaugh said. “It was at that time told to the public that it would be preserved.”
The township said it still will be, just in a new location less than a mile away.
“The owner of the cemetery, Tate, suggested that we put it at Fallis Pioneer cemetery," informed Cramer. "[It’s] not an active cemetery, but an inactive one. It's kind of pioneer style, and it's owned by the township, and it'll be there forever.”
While Cramer said there were multiple public meetings about the plans, some community members still feel there was a lack of transparency.
“The information, to my knowledge, was not really put out there," said Puterbaugh. "If you look around right now to other people, they didn't know about it as well.”
Falloon has also reached out to the developers but hasn’t heard back yet.

Bellbrook-Sugarcreek Community Support Center reopens in Bellbrookby Kaitlyn Herman
Ohio (WKEF) -- Bellbrook-Sugarcreek Community Support Center reopens in new location
The food pantry will continue to serve residents of Bellbrook and Sugarcreek at their new location on East Franklin in downtown Bellbrook
The economy has been difficult for the past couple of years
So we're here to cover food insecurity for people who need it
on our list we have well over 150 households," said Cindy Comperchio
Center leaders said the Sugar Maple Festival felt like the perfect time to re-introduce themselves to the community they serve
They also raffled off several baskets for their fundraising efforts
“They help put a focus on the people who are not usually seen in our community
and they are the vehicle through which we can join everybody else and contribute to the community," said Mike and Lisa Glinski
They are open every week for those that need food or those looking to donate
They also do distributions on Wednesdays and special events around the holidays
SUGARCREEK ‒ A piece of equipment at the Belden Brick Co
2 at 375 Dover Road NW sustained between $250,000 and $500,000 in damage after a fire at the plant Thursday morning
according to Sugarcreek Fire Chief John Meek
they found a screener used to separate course and fine material engulfed in flames
There was heavy black smoke in the building the machine was housed in from rubber belts burning
Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire
It took some time to clear smoke from the building to find hot spots on the machine
The building where the machine was housed was not damaged
The cause of the fire was electrical in nature
Sugarcreek was assisted by firefighters from New Philadelphia
Meek noted that it took some time for out-of-town crews to arrive because of road conditions due to snow that fell Wednesday night
The chief applauded Belden Brick employees for their efforts
They had the gas and power shut off where firefighters arrived
and the company had employees directing crews to the fire location
firefighters were able to begin fighting the fire when they arrived on scene

Ohio — In rural communities like Sugarcreek
having advanced emergency equipment can mean the difference between life and death
The Sugarcreek Fire and EMS Department is taking steps to ensure residents get the critical care they need quickly
The department covers a 70-square-mile area
where response times can be lengthy due to the distance to hospitals
Our response times tend to be longer just getting to the patient,” said Cody Shetler
a captain and paramedic with Sugarcreek Fire and Rescue
it often takes 20 minutes to get to the nearest hospital in Dover
For critical conditions like heart attacks
transport times to facilities in Canton or Akron can range from 30 to 65 minutes
“The care we have to provide is usually more in-depth because we have the patient for a longer period of time,” Shetler said
we want to get them to an operating table in under an hour,” Shetler said
the department has equipped its EMS trucks with tools typically found in hospitals
“Back here we have our cardiac monitor so we can do everything they would do in the hospital with this,” Shetler said
The department is also one of the first in the state to use an ultrasound for administering IVs
a time-saving feature critical for emergency care
you actually have that equipment.’ It’s like yeah
we have to have this equipment because of how far out we are,” Shetler said
said the team continuously looks for ways to improve
And when we do have these patients it’s great to see we did make a difference in their lives,” Meek said
The department recently announced it will soon add a second EMS truck featuring additional life-saving tools
The new truck will have cameras on the front and sides for better visibility and a combined refrigerator and heating unit to store medical supplies
“The truck will look very similar to this one but have even more life-saving features,” Meek said
the department can respond to two emergencies simultaneously
ensuring quicker response times and critical care for more patients
Samantha Frye of Dundee continues to expand her involvement in the restaurant business
When she was 18, she purchased Rosalie's Restaurant in Strasburg
The building had previously housed the Honey Bee Cafe and Campbell Creek Pretzels
Mill Street Diner is open for breakfast and lunch and features the kind of food someone might find at a mom-and-pop diner
The restaurant also has menu specials every day
The interior is decorated with memorabilia from Garaway High School in Sugarcreek to give the place a hometown look
"There's nothing like the little hometown diner feel
It is one of the few restaurants to be open on Sunday in Amish Country
and there's a wait for food because after church
The two business partners became acquainted because Owens is a regular at Rosalie's
ventilation and air conditioning business for 25 years and operated a food truck
I couldn't ask for a better business partner," he said
Owens runs day-to-day operations at the Mill Street Diner
Mill Street Diner has three full-time employees and six part time
She spent about nine months washing dishes at Rosalie's before she started serving
She began cooking at Rosalie's when she was 17 and has also worked at Blazin Burgers
"I watched her over the last year and a half grow into that businesswoman that she is today
I think," Frye said of the Mill Street Diner venture
Operating two businesses at one time was a challenge at first
It's not as bad as I thought it would be," Frye said
in Ohio’s Hospice Truman House in New Philadelphia
Henry attended school in Baltic and was employed by the Shepler-Moomaw Brickworks in Sugarcreek
He later went to work for Sugarcreek’s Andreas Furniture
from which he retired after many years of service
Henry was hard-working and diligent all of his life
He married the former Anna Mullet on November 20
The couple had seven children and shared nearly 71 years of marriage before Anna’s passing on June 11
Henry was a kind and gentle soul and was always helpful
He enjoyed gardening and was a loving father who liked visiting his large family; sometimes that involved travel
Henry was a faithful member of Dover Alliance Church
Marilyn (Allen) Andrews of Massillon and Michelle (Greg) Harstine of New Philadelphia; his 16 grandchildren; his 23 great-grandchildren; his sisters-in-law
Evelyn and Lovina Troyer; and his nieces and nephews
Henry was preceded in death by his infant daughter
Dale Hostetler; and his seven siblings - Henry was the last of his generational family
in the Dover Alliance Church; Henry’s grandson-in-law
Ed Kramer and Pastor Bruce Sexton will officiate
Family and friends may also call one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday morning

Welcome to This Week on Hagerty Marketplace
a recurring recap of the week’s most noteworthy cars from the Hagerty Marketplace online auctions
This week we highlight four of the 16 cars (you can see the rest here) that Hagerty Marketplace is offering from the SugarCreek Collection
part of the remarkable assemblage of vehicles gathered by collector John Richardson
Cared for by an in-house group of craftspeople
the SugarCreek vehicles have either been restored to stock condition like the mint 1969 Mercury Cougar and 1978 Clénet Series 1 offered here
like this 1946 Dodge pickup and 1965 Cadillac De Ville convertible
The bidding window on the Mercury and the Dodge closes on Monday
while the Clénet is up for a no-reserve auction through Friday
We don’t have to tell you what a splendid Christmas present any of these vehicles would make…
In the interest of maximizing its platforms
most every car Ford built in the late 1960s had a Mercury counterpart
the Mercury Cougar shared some parts with the Ford Mustang
but seldom have platform-mates looked so different
The Cougar was typically considered more luxurious and civilized than the Mustang
except when it wasn’t—and this 1969 Mercury Cougar XR-7 was one of those cars
with the factory 428-cubic-inch V-8 with the ultra-rare CJ Ram Air
which also came with Whisper-Aire air conditioning
Restored by SugarCreek and part of the collection since 2009
four-barrel engine is mated to a floor-shifted C6 automatic transmission with a Traction-Loc differential
The interior has been restored but retains its stock appearance
though inside the glove compartment is an auxiliary set of Sunpro gauges
The exterior is finished in the original Medium Emerald Metallic with a black vinyl roof
or serve as an invigorating weekend cruiser
the vehicles that rolled off the assembly line at the Warren
Michigan plant in the 1940s were largely destined for military service during World War II
and that’s when this Custom W-Series pickup hit the market
The engine was the Chrysler flathead straight-six
but this truck rides with a 318-cubic-inch V-8
connected to an A904 three-speed automatic transmission with an authentic-appearing floor shifter
along with power windows and a ceiling-mounted Sony Bluetooth stereo
including discs up front; electric windshield wipers
Part of the SugarCreek collection since 2021
this Dodge W-Series is prepared for work or play
it doesn’t get much more stylish than a 1960s Cadillac
this De Ville is powered by a 429-cubic-inch V-8 with 340 horsepower
with a dual exhaust exiting through Flowmaster mufflers
The transmission is a three-speed Turbo Hydra-Matic
The car joined the SugarCreek collection in 2009
It has since lived in a climate-controlled showroom
Ideal for a Saturday night showcase or a Sunday afternoon cruise
a true representative of Cadillac’s “Standard of the World” slogan coined in 1908
Slide behind the Nardi steering wheel and imagine you’re in the company of Farrah Fawcett
This 1978 Clénet Series 1 roadster was number 115 of 250 built by Clénet Coachworks
The idea behind the Clénet was to mix the opulent styling of 1930s high-end models
with modern technology that would allow the Clénet to be your daily driver
with a Ford C6 three-speed automatic transmission
The chassis was adapted from a Lincoln Continental Mark IV
The swoopy styling and the eight faux exhaust pipes created a memorable look
signaled a very distinctive bit of opulence
This particular car arrived at the SugarCreek Collection in 2013 and underwent a cosmetic restoration that included refreshed cream and brown paint and reupholstered brown plush leather upholstery
and has been driven only 280 miles since it joined the Collection

I just returned from my annual trip to Sugarcreek
Before COVID I went with Susann and two other friends and now we four are the fearless or fearsome four depending on what day of the week it is
a person who resides temporarily in a place
I am a tourist and I don't want to miss anything
"All of life is a foreign country," and it is true; each day is a new day to explore
When I had to give up driving a few years ago it would have put an end to my wandering
but because of a wonderful family and amazing friends I haven’t missed anything
I’m so grateful that they lovingly take me along
we leave early in the morning and stop at Pop’s Greasy Spoon in Alliance
but we found Pop’s a few years ago when we were so hungry that a greasy spoon sounded appetizing
but it tastes so good." That is truth in advertising
Many years ago when I lived in Virginia I learned to love cornbread
The food was great at Pop’s so it is now our go-to for breakfast
Tammy is our designated driver and photographer
so she deserves stars in her crown just for putting up with all our in-put
opinionated women in an enclosed space and each one having a suggestion or idea
We spend two nights and receive a coupon book that we take to the local businesses and we get free goodies like a pound of bologna
jar of jelly and a whole carload of fun stuff to bring home
The coupons for freebies get us in the stores
and since we are in the store we do a lot of looking and shopping
Tammy took our pictures with a huge metal buffalo
Tammy’s car is a Honda Fit and the trunk could not hold it all so we had some of it at our feet
we opted out of the free miniature golf and instead went for an Amish buggy ride
This year it was “Sheep Thrills,” which is just plain down-home-on-the-farm humor with a ventriloquist Todd Oliver and his talking dog
When singing “I’ve Only Got Eyes for You” he singled me out and I went up to the edge of the stage
He made me believe I still got “it” if only for a fleeting second
I know I was chosen because I was the oldest-looking woman in the front row and possibly in the whole 600-seat theater
a talented comedian who has played Las Vegas and other big-time places
Lynyrd came down in the audience and he talked to Tammy and Kathy asking them where they were from
When we get there next year we are going to ask him why he left Susann out and warn him not to do it again
Our fabulous foursome is a force to be reckoned with
We are already making our plans for next year

2024) – A holiday tradition in the village is growing
Marketing Director Lynn Dessecker says Saturday’s holiday light-up event downtown will have all of the usual festivities
plus a parade along Main Street and an ugly sweater contest
“This is actually my first year doing this
and I was just trying to add some things to make it a little bit better.”
It’s happening from 4 to 7 pm with the parade stepping off at 4:30 from First Mennonite Church
there will be free refreshments and sleigh rides around downtown
performances from student singers and musicians
and a candle-lighting ceremony in front of the cuckoo clock
it has a very Hallmark feel with everyone coming together
We’ve had a lot of donations from the businesses to help us pull this off
Many downtown businesses will also offer goodies and holiday-themed activities
“The bulk food store will be offering some sweet treats
There is a live nativity scene at Sweetwater Farms
The library is also participating as well as the Age of Steam Roundhouse… Next year
I would like to incorporate maybe wagon rides back and forth from Sweetwater to downtown
just so it’ll be easier to get around to see everything.”
This year’s honorary candle-lighter is retired Garaway band director Fred Welsch
Dessecker says they will also acknowledge the two businesses that donated labor and materials to repair the roof of the cuckoo clock
unwrapped toys will also be accepted for the local Share-A-Christmas program
Donors will be entered into a drawing for the chance to win a sled
Ohio (WKEF) -- ICE agents arrested two individuals in Sugarcreek Township on January 26
Sugarcreek Police Department confirmed ICE agents took 2 people into custody over the weekend on Wilmington Pike
Chief Mike Brown issued a statement regarding the situation:
It's unclear who these individuals were or where they were taken
This came just 6 days after President Trump took office and rescinded a Biden-era policy preventing ICE raids from taking place in sensitive locations like churches
Dayton Public Schools sent a letter to families saying in part:
No incidents had occurred in the school district as of Tuesday
Columbus and Cincinnati city schools had issued similar statements
Dayton is one of just 24 cities and counties in the state to be a Certified Welcoming City. According to welcomingamerica.org
Certified Welcoming is a formal designation for cities and counties that have created policies and programs reflecting their values and commitment to immigrant inclusion
Dayton 24/7 Now reached out to Welcome Dayton about what they’re hearing from the immigrant population they support
They have not returned the request for comment at this time
Dayton 24/7 Now also reached out to ICE for any updates on agent activity here in the Miami Valley and have not gotten a response
Updates will be available as this story develops

Ohio — The Village of Sugarcreek is rejoicing with the reopening of State Road 39
The road reopened just before Labor Day after the Ohio Department of Transportation closed a portion of the road for excavation work
Its reopening is something area businesses have been looking forward to as the project's detour led drivers around Sugarcreek
That detour resulted in lower tourism numbers
the Sugarcreek Business Association reported a 25 to 30% decrease in the amount of visitors compared to last year

Weaver's Furniture is located right along State Road 39
Weaver said many of his customers come from right off the road
Weaver and his fellow small business owners did what they could during the seven-week construction project
The biggest effort was placing signs near the detour and other routes to remind people that Sugarcreek was still open for business
but nothing compared to when the Department of Transportation opened the road right before Labor Day
"It was just like the gates opened up and we were just able to bring people back in," he said
Weaver isn't the only one noticing a difference
there was a 145% increase in foot traffic compared to 2023
Bev Keller with the Sugarcreek Business Association said that amounts to about 355 people a day
She said it's the easy access that's making the difference
"We don't have to send you over the river and through the woods to Grandma's house," she said
"We're just coming straight down state road 39."
There's also an improved sense of safety in the area
The closed portion of State Road 39 was considered deadly by locals
The department did excavation work to lower a blind hill
making Sugarcreek's summer tourism struggles worth it
Families in our community lose loved ones because of that intersection
It's totally worth what we've been through."
the village is moving past its summer tourism slump and looking ahead by making plans for the annual Swiss Fest
The lessons from the closure will be sticking with the village for some time
Both Keller and Weaver said the closure showed how resilient the tiny tourist spot is while also teaching a lesson in communication for the community
"Communication is a lot more than what is on paper or a post on Facebook," Keller said
"It's about making sure everyone is on the same page and understands the ramifications
We want to drive home that this road is open."

A former elementary school in the Karns City School District could be demolished
the now vacant Sugarcreek Elementary School may be torn down in the next 12 months
Officials say the cost of maintaining the school is high and no buyer has emerged for the building
so the next steps include changing zoning policy
The school would become a training ground for emergency services before being completely torn down and the fields being turned into athletic fields
No decision has been made final as the school district would still consider offers for the building
No date has been set for one final walk through for the school but if the community showed interest in a date could possibly be set

Ohio — The Age of Steam Roundhouse Museum has added former Missouri Pacific business car No
The car has been donated by the family of the late Jerry Joe Jacobson
founder of the Age of Steam Roundhouse and operator of the Ohio Central Railroad from its founding in 1988 until it was sold to Genesee & Wyoming in 2008
The Jacobson family used the car for travel on Amtrak for more than 20 years
“Although we will no longer see the ‘Sugarcreek’ at the rear of Amtrak trains,” the museum said in a press release
“it is comforting to know that it will still be preserved and in use for the future.”
The car is currently en route from Pittsburgh Union Station to the museum via Norfolk Southern and the Ohio Central

There aren’t that many ex-MoPac passenger cars still extant
This car was originally built by Budd in 1949 as the 10 roomette-6 double bedroom sleeping car “Crystal River” for service in MoPac’s St
Louis-Denver “Colorado Eagle.” The MoP added the number 611 in an early-1960’s renumbering
It was converted to business car #11 in 1971

Ohio — Businesses in The Little Switzerland of Ohio are seeing fewer tourists than normal for this time of year
Locals believe an Ohio Department of Transportation project could be behind it
ODOT closed a portion of State Road 39 for excavation work
The department is hoping it will improve a road that locals say is known for deadly accidents
"We understand the accidents," Bev Keller said
the deaths that have occured at that intersection because of the blind hill."
While the roadwork will hopefully lead to a safer area for drivers
the detour for the project is leading people around the village of Sugarcreek
It's impacting small business owners like Freeman Mullet of the Gospel Shop
When comparing guest books from the village's tourist stops
leaders found guests were down 25% to 30% from this time last year
That drop is concerning as tourism is vital to the area
"Tourism is a huge part of our market in terms of the local shops it supports and the bed tax dollars that go back to support the Village of Sugarcreek," Keller with the Sugarcreek Business Association said
Keller and her team have been drumming up business the old fashioned way by word of mouth
Signs declaring Sugarcreek is open for business have been placed near the detour and along other busy highways
Social media posts and more advertising have been used to keep business booming
"Some of or businesses are seeing a down turn," Keller said
then they see up days and we are hoping to support them."
Small business owners like Mullet are appreciative of that extra effort and said he is sure business will pick up soon
"People will know that we are here and find their way," he said
ODOT said construction on the road will end sometime in the fall. To learn more about it, click here
