Contractor to perform inspections in area of 54-inch sewer main failure
DC Water in coordination with the District Department of Transportation will perform emergency work on Suitland Parkway Southeast near Stanton Road starting tonight as early as 7 p.m
Crews will be inspecting additional sections of a 54-inch stormwater main that failed last month
traffic in this area will be reduced from two lanes to one in each direction on Suitland Parkway
and follow the direction of flaggers through the construction zone.
Repairs have been ongoing since the stormwater main failed in early March; however
further inspections are needed to determine if other sections of the pipe are compromised

Every effort is being made to open the closed lane portion of Suitland Parkway as soon as is safely possible and alleviate traffic
The sinkhole grew to 15 feet wide and 20 feet deep and crews have been working throughout the day to make temporary repairs
Reopening the outbound lane requires a complex process of excavation and backfilling to support the weight of vehicles
While this will allow the lane to reopen for temporary traffic relief
the work to make permanent repairs continues
DC Water crews will need to do additional excavation to remove
and reline a large section of the 54-inch stormwater line
Emergency repairs may continue overnight through Friday and into the weekend

Police initially attributed some of the blame over the situation to the 911 caller
a person who knew Jay and lied to police about people breaking in
Officers found two people in the apartment at the time of the incident
“The 911 caller also did not inform the 911 call taker that the two men he knew were in the apartment when he left approximately 25 minutes earlier,” Prince George's County Police Chief Malik Aziz said in early March

Authorities later discovered that Jay had a gun in his pocket and found another in the sink
One local man strongly believes change starts with just that: community – a tighter
I’m going to speak anything Suitland," said Anthony Washburn
"I'm going to speak up because this is my community
it seems no one loves their home more than Washburn
"I’ve lived everywhere in Suitland that you can think of from a child to a grown adult
My children are even living and growing up here
That’s why Suitland is just so dear to me," Washburn said
when he heard the gunshots and fear that came from a 16-year-old's murder on June 27th
sparking dozens of people to show up at a meeting to speak about safety in their community
Everybody could see with two eyes that it was kids that killed kids," Washburn said passionately
"So all the people that say Suitland is their home
7News' Lianna Golden: A lot of the folks who live here are saying
'We want more police officers; we want more patrols.' But you were saying that might not be the solution
Washburn: Just seeing the red and blue lights
just seeing them driving in the neighborhood isn't going to do the job
I think we need to hold the police accountable
where you have better relationships with the police
We need to have better bridges with the police
create bridges with the police in the neighborhoods
so we have to figure out a way to build a bridge with them so they can humanize us
and they are not just patrons of the neighborhood
Washburn recognizes it's not a one-man job
and you could probably finish the sentence
I never heard that a household raised a child
He believes it's a village of both people and activity
Washburn said it's vital to find out what kids are indulging in and create positive activities that are geared towards those interests
The children don’t identify with the politicians
They identify with the people they know in their neighborhood
honorable men who they never seen too much color outside the lines or who they did see color outside the lines
They see him try to change his life in more positive ways," Washburn said
With a safety walk planned in Suitland on August 10th
these children are going have more children from the same community

7News' report immediately caught the attention of Prince George’s County At-Large Councilmember Calvin Hawkins

Hawkins went to the Town Square neighborhood Monday night to hand out fliers announcing a community meeting with police leadership Wednesday at 6 p.m
He is also promising immediate action in response to 7News' story
