Subban breaks down why Mike Sullivan is the right fit for the Rangers
The New York Rangers have hired Mike Sullivan as coach, days after he left his job with the Pittsburgh Penguins
Sullivan's deal is for five years and will make him the highest paid coach in NHL history
Mike Babcock previously made the most at $6.25M annually when he coached the Maple Leafs
General manager Chris Drury announced the move Friday
bringing in the organization's top candidate who was out of work for less than a full business week
"Mike Sullivan has established himself as one of the premier head coaches in the NHL," Drury said
"Mike brings a championship-level presence behind the bench
As we began this process and Mike became an available option for us to speak with
it was immediately clear that he was the best coach to lead our team."
who was fired after the Rangers missed the playoffs following a trip to the Eastern Conference final last year
who coached Pittsburgh to the Stanley Cup back to back in 2016 and '17
is tasked with trying to turn the Rangers back into an immediate contender
Drury made the move to get Sullivan not long after receiving a multiyear contract extension of his own
"Mike's track record and success in the NHL and internationally speaks for itself
and I look forward to seeing him behind the Rangers bench," owner James Dolan said
"I would like to welcome Mike back to the Rangers organization."
spent four seasons as a Rangers assistant under then-coach and still close friend and confidant John Tortorella from 2009-13
and the two have worked together professionally through USA Hockey
most recently at the 4 Nations Face-Off in February
Tortorella -- who was fired as coach of the Philadelphia Flyers in late March -- spoke to the Rangers
but will not join Sullivan's staff as he did at the 4 Nations
No assistant hires were confirmed Friday and the organization is expected to discuss those openings in the coming days
Sullivan had been with the Penguins since getting hired midseason in December 2015 when Mike Johnston was fired months into his lackluster tenure. This is his third head-coaching job in the NHL after a short stint with the Boston Bruins in 2003-04 and '05-06 sandwiched around the lockout that wiped out an entire season
New York getting Sullivan leaves seven teams around the league with vacancies: Pittsburgh
Multiple teams that initially reached out to Sullivan will now have to pivot to other experienced options
as well as a couple of college coaches with recent national championships: Denver's David Carle and Western Michigan's Pat Ferschweiler
Information from The Associated Press was used in this report
New York Rangers President and General Manager Chris Drury announced today that the team has named Mike Sullivan the 38th Head Coach in franchise history
“Mike Sullivan has established himself as one of the premier head coaches in the NHL,” Drury said
“Given his numerous accomplishments throughout his coaching career - including two Stanley Cups and leading Team USA at the international level – Mike brings a championship-level presence behind the bench
I’ve gotten to know Mike very well over the years
including as teammates in the 1997 World Championships
when he coached me as a player in New York and through our shared time working together with USA Hockey
it was immediately clear that he was the best coach to lead our team.”
“I would like to welcome Mike back to the Rangers organization,” said James L
“Mike’s track record and success in the NHL and internationally speaks for itself
and I look forward to seeing him behind the Rangers bench.”
Sullivan has posted a 479-311-15-112 (W-L-T-OTL) record in 917 games as head coach with the Boston Bruins (2003-04 – 2005-06) and Pittsburgh Penguins (2015-16 – 2024-25)
he led the team to back-to-back Stanley Cup Championships in 2015-16 and 2016-17
he became just the second head coach in NHL history to win the Stanley Cup in each of his first two seasons with a team
Sullivan is also the only American-born head coach in NHL history who has won the Stanley Cup multiple times
During Sullivan’s tenure with the Penguins
the team posted a 409-255-89 record in 753 regular season games
He helped Pittsburgh reach the postseason in each of his first seven seasons behind the Penguins’ bench
and the Penguins posted a 44-38 record in 82 postseason games with Sullivan as their head coach
Sullivan is the Penguins’ all-time leader in several coaching categories
In addition to his head coaching experience in the NHL
Sullivan has been a part of coaching staffs for several NHL teams
He has eight years of experience as an Assistant Coach with four different NHL teams: Boston (2002-03)
the Tampa Bay Lightning (2007-08 – 2008-09)
Sullivan was also the development coach for the Chicago Blackhawks during the 2014-15 season when they won the Stanley Cup
Sullivan also served parts of two seasons as a head coach in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Providence Bruins (2002-03) and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (2015-16)
Massachusetts native has coached with Team USA in several tournaments
Sullivan served as Team USA’s head coach at the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off
and he was named the head coach for the U.S
Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team for the upcoming 2026 Winter Olympics
Sullivan had also initially been named the head coach for Team USA at the 2022 Winter Olympics (ultimately did not coach in the tournament after NHL players were unable to play)
He also served as an Assistant Coach for Team USA at the 2006 Winter Olympics and the 2016 World Cup of Hockey
Sullivan skated in 709 career NHL games over 11 seasons with the San Jose Sharks
He was selected by the Rangers in the fourth round (69th overall) of the 1987 NHL Draft
Sullivan played four years of college hockey at Boston University
and he served as the team’s captain in his senior year
When Mike Sullivan took over as the Pittsburgh Penguins’ coach in December 2015
Superstars Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin were both averaging less than a point per game
who had been coaching the franchise’s AHL club
The results weren’t immediate — the Penguins lost their first four games under Sullivan — but as hoped
“When you’re walking into a room with Sidney Crosby and Malkin and (Kris) Letang and (Marc-Andre) Fleury
it’s a long list of guys who have some big reputations,” Cullen said
and it didn’t matter if you were Sid or a guy on the fourth line
It was something guys really responded to.”
Pittsburgh righted the ship and went on to win the Stanley Cup both that season and the next
Cullen calls Sullivan “as good a coach as I’ve ever been around and as good a coach as there is in the game.”
That’s quite an endorsement from someone who played more than 1,500 games in the NHL
Sullivan is now walking into a new job for the first time since taking over the Penguins. The New York Rangers, for whom Sullivan was an assistant under John Tortorella from 2009 to ’13, officially announced him as head coach Friday
who has 479 career wins with the Boston Bruins and the Penguins
who led New York to a Presidents’ Trophy and Eastern Conference final berth in 2023-24 but failed to make the playoffs in 2024-25 — a massive disappointment given the team’s expectations
“It’s probably not unlike what he walked into in Pittsburgh,” Cullen said
“A team that’s awfully close to being really good
high expectations — it’s a perfect scenario for him to come into
I can’t think of a better coach and person to come in and lead the ship.”
The 2015-16 Penguins and current Rangers comparison might not be one-for-one
The Rangers don’t have a core as capable as one with Crosby
But New York certainly has more ability than it showed this past season
and team president and general manager Chris Drury is counting on Sullivan to bring it out
“It’s a talented roster that somehow lost their way,” said Mike Rupp
who played for the Rangers when Sullivan was an assistant and now works as an analyst on the Penguins’ SportsNet Pittsburgh broadcasts
which gave him a look at Sullivan as a head coach
“I think it’s really important that you have a coach come in and challenge the guys
but also breathes some confidence back in the group
“He puts players in positions to succeed,” added Brian Boyle
who played for the Penguins in 2021-22 and had Sullivan as an assistant coach with the Rangers
He wants to play a puck-pursuit game no matter what.”
“The clearer and more disciplined we got with how we wanted to play
the more it allowed you to play freely,” Cullen said
“You had guys like Malkin and Sid and Kris Letang that play on instinct so well
you could see these guys with really unique instincts offensively just start to really flourish.”
who had only 19 points in the first 28 games in 2015-16 under Johnston
then won the first of his back-to-back Conn Smythe trophies
Malkin scored at more than a point-per-game clip after Sullivan took over
and Letang finished fourth in Norris Trophy voting
Rupp noted the Sullivan is not afraid to coach
and players — from future Hall of Famers on down — respond to that
and Rupp pointed to an instance late in the 2015-16 season as an example
and Sullivan yelled at him to “shut the f— up.”
“He’s not a guy that goes to the well all the time and keeps ripping,” Rupp said
The Rangers need some accountability that it hasn’t really felt like they’ve (had) the last year.”
Boyle praised Sullivan’s preparation and also appreciated his consistent demeanor
The former forward said that he was the same in Penguins’ meetings
whether the team was playing well or poorly
Boyle also credited him with communicating constantly
“He will be very forthright on what he expects from everybody,” he said
adding that the players need to “look in the mirror a little bit” after 2024-25 and come into camp in good shape
“He’s going to have a really difficult training camp
but for the right reasons and in the right way
He’s not just going to skate them into the ground for the sake of it.”
but Sullivan’s former players didn’t think that’d be much of an issue for him
Boyle said he dealt with pressure during Pittsburgh’s deep playoff runs
who was with the Rangers when Sullivan was an assistant
“I think it’s going to be a great transition,” he said
“He has a great way with handling and helping the players handle all the distractions in the media and the certain things you have to deal with in a bigger city,” Cullen added
“He’s dealt with a million different situations
is in the prime of his career and at the very top of his game.”
The most severely injured person in the back-to-back incidents died two days later, the charges read.
An unlicensed driver purposely hit four pedestrians in crosswalks in two back-to-back crashes in south Minneapolis, and one of her victims was dragged beneath the vehicle and suffered fatal injuries, according to murder and assault charges filed Monday.
Sophia Elizabeth Sullivan, 38, was charged initially on Friday in Hennepin County District Court with four counts each of criminal vehicular operation and second-degree assault, and one count of first-degree assault in connection with the incidents that took place early Wednesday evening.
After one victim died two days after the crash, the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office amended the charges to one count of intentional second-degree murder and three counts each of intentional attempted second-degree murder and second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon.
Sullivan was arrested shortly after the incidents at her home near the scene of the second crash and remained jailed Monday in lieu of $2 million bail. She appeared in court Monday afternoon and has another hearing scheduled for June 3. A message was left with her attorney seeking a response to the allegations.
The charges did not offer a motive or say whether Sullivan knew any of the victims. Officials have not released the identities of the victims.
At the time of the crashes, Sullivan was driving even though her license had been revoked. She has not had a valid license for nearly a decade, a state Department of Public Safety spokesman said Monday.
There have now been seven homicides in Minneapolis since last Tuesday, bringing this year’s total to 18. There were 21 homicides in the city at this time last year.
According to the court filings from last week’s crash and police:
A woman in her 40s and a teenage girl told police they were at the intersection of West 26th Street and Grand Avenue South and entered the crosswalk after the traffic light turned green for them. A car ran the light, hit both of them and drove off.
Both were taken to HCMC. One of the females suffered a head injury, while the other had “minor burn marks caused by contact with the concrete” and some bleeding, the charges read.
About five minutes later and a half-mile to the west, Sullivan stopped her car momentarily, then drove alongside a man and a woman in their 30s walking on a sidewalk. She then sped up and hit both of them once they entered the crosswalk at Emerson Avenue South.
Sullivan’s car “accelerated to a high speed and plowed directly into them,” the criminal complaint read, based on video from the area.
One victim was thrown 30 feet and landed next to a parked vehicle.
Sullivan drove north on Emerson with the woman on the hood, until she “abruptly braked. [The woman] was thrown from the hood and landed on the road near the curb,” the charges continued.
Sullivan then ran over the woman and “continued to drive down the road, dragging [the female] under the car” for about 40 yards, the court documents noted. “[Sullivan] eventually started swerving to the left and right, then turned into a parking lot, causing [the woman] to come out from under the car. [Sullivan] then appeared to run over her with the rear tires.”
Thanks to surveillance video, officers quickly caught up with Sullivan at her home that night and arrested her. Her car was parked outside. It was heavily damaged and appeared to have blood on it.
Sullivan acknowledged driving the car within the time when the crashes occurred.
Both victims in the second incident were taken by emergency medical responders to HCMC. The female suffered numerous injuries, and she died Friday, said police Sgt. Garrett Parten.
The man suffered a broken wrist and other injuries.

When Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas discussed Mike Sullivan’s exit as head coach last week
“Sometimes the class needs a new professor
and sometimes the professor needs a new class.”
During this week’s “Madden Monday” podcast
Mark Madden of 105.9 The X and TribLive said that’s the only appropriate way to look at the situation
“I think that Kyle’s description of the Sullivan situation was right on,” Madden said
it reinforced my idea that Sullivan should have been out years earlier — probably when Dubas took the job (in 2023)
I do have faith in Dubas’ process and in what he will do to hire the next coach.”
I asked Madden if he thought Steelers owner Art Rooney II would ever employ a similar strategy with Mike Tomlin
“And the Penguins parting company with Sullivan just highlights how ludicrous it is that (the Steelers) keep Tomlin no matter what
because it’s a very similar situation and very similar resumes
I look at Sullivan as twice the hockey coach that Mike Tomlin is a football coach
I think Tomlin has never been a good coach.”
Now that Greg Popovich is stepping down as head coach of the San Antonio Spurs after 29 years
Tomlin is the longest-tenured head coach in any major North American team sports
That’s despite the fact he hasn’t won a playoff game since the 2016 postseason
Madden advanced multiple reasons for that mentality from Rooney II
the Steelers just don’t fire their coach,” Madden said
(Tomlin) has the national media absolutely buffaloed
… But there’s this pervading notion that if you win a championship
Your grace periods should go no longer than the next season
Popovich went the last 11 seasons of his career without advancing beyond the first round of playoffs
As for Sullivan taking the Rangers head coaching job in New York
Madden isn’t quite sure how that will go
“That’s not an ideal situation
It’s definitely a bad dressing room,” Madden said
“They got rid of some of the guys that made it bad
That goes to show just how messed up that dressing room was that they would revere that cheapshot artist as a leader
It’s going to be tough to handle for Sully.”
Madden insists it won’t be all bad for Sullivan
“The one thing he does have is an excellent goalie
(Igor) Shesterkin has gotten the Rangers as far as the conference final twice,” Madden added
“But they didn’t make the playoffs this year
and I do think there’s some work to be done.”
Madden and I speculate about the level of acrimony between Sullivan and Dubas on the way out

The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) has issued a precautionary fish consumption advisory for part of Sullivan County
(WCYB) — The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) has issued a precautionary fish consumption advisory for part of Sullivan County
The advisory is in effect for the Fort Patrick Henry Reservoir due to elevated levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)
and children should avoid eating catfish from the reservoir
Others should limit their consumption to one meal per month
The advisory stems from data collected by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) in cooperation with TDEC
which showed PCB levels in channel catfish averaging 0.296 mg/kg
located on the South Fork Holston River near Kingsport
has been subject to fish tissue analysis in 2009
"Unlike 'Do Not Consume' advisories that warn the general population to avoid eating fish from a particular body of water altogether
precautionary fish consumption advisories are specifically directed to sensitive populations," Ronné Adkins
deputy commissioner for Environment at TDEC
and those who may eat fish frequently from the same body of water," said Adkins
"These advisories help the community make informed decisions about whether or not to consume the fish."
TDEC added it will post warning signs at primary public access points and will work with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency to communicate this information to the public
Dan Sullivan drew around 35 people to a town hall meeting to recap the Arkansas 95th General Assembly
Topics included Social Justice and Equality Day
The Town Hall was hosted alongside Robert Stienbuch
School of Law at the University of Arkansas
Stienbuch did not answer many questions because crowd members interrupted
Sullivan," Kimberly Warmth said during the event
Sullivan requested the Jonesboro Police Department's presence during a heated discussion about DEI
JPD was in attendance for the remainder of the event
A large portion of the event was discussed post-Sen
Sullivan made this in response to the City of Jonesboro holding free regular-route bus rides for Social Justice and Equality Day on April 25
A proclamation was read from the mayor's office at the event
declaring April 25 as Social Justice and Equality Day in Jonesboro
"The City of Jonesboro stands united in its commitment to promote fairness
striving for a society where individuals are treated fairly and have equal opportunities."
was signed into law during the legislative session
or practices in local government." The law goes into effect Aug
Sullivan stated in his post
"Why is the city using your tax dollars to honor a device concept such as social justice and equality?" Which sparked some online debate
which accumulated around 122 comments at the time of the event
Sullivan said he contacted several City of Jonesboro officials
He has not yet heard back from the mayor's office
"I called and talked to four different city council members
One of the guest speakers at the April 25 event
President of the Craighead County Chapter of the NAACP
Sullivan had previously described Carter's comments as partisan
Carter defended his statements during the Town Hall
You (Sullivan) went to social media and made sure you pointed out it was party-affiliated and had nothing to do with that," Carter said
Carter also added that anyone can go back and listen to his statements on KLEK's Facebook page.
"We have to have uncomfortable conversations," Carter said
it was asked if Sullivan believed the City of Jonesboro violated Act 747 and if he planned to pursue action
An Arkansas State University Student, John Thompson, asked Sullivan about SB3, now Act 116, which ends DEI in public schools and higher education.
and you may never agree on the equity part
but I just want to get some reassurance that you did not vote for that bill because you didn't agree with diversity and inclusion on college campuses like Arkansas State," Thompson said
Thompson also extended an invitation to come to the Black Student Association (BSA) and the Multicultural Center to talk and meet with students
"I've talked to the chancellor multiple times on this issue
Everybody's welcome at Arkansas State," Sullivan said
Sullivan said the bill mirrors what the Supreme Court says
Sullivan also said he would meet with the BSA at A-State
Thompson added that Sullivan is a republican lawmaker
"So you understand that people sometimes meet together because they have common values and shared culture
and they like to experience those things amongst themselves
and they would like a safe space," Thompson said
Thompson expressed concern about groups like the BSA not being allowed on college campuses because of Act 116
"I know what the bill says," Sullivan said
"It says you can't give preferential treatment
So if the students want to have an organization
Thompson asked if he could be reassured that nobody would take action against the university for considering groups such as BSA to be giving preferential treatment
Sullivan said a caucus meeting to discuss disaster relief was set for Monday
He also added that he would update social media to inform constituents about disaster relief decisions
"We're going to talk about the emergency fund," Sullivan said
A stream of the whole town hall by KLEK is available on Facebook.

Mike Sullivan was hired as coach of the New York Rangers on Friday
Sullivan coached the Pittsburgh Penguins the past 10 seasons
a run that ended April 28 when he and the team decided to part ways
He was 409-255-89 during his time in Pittsburgh
including Stanley Cup championships in 2016 and 2017
He's the Penguins' all-time leader in coaching wins in the regular season and Stanley Cup Playoffs (44-38)
“Mike Sullivan has established himself as one of the premier head coaches in the NHL,” Rangers general manager Chris Drury said Friday
“Given his numerous accomplishments throughout his coaching career -- including two Stanley Cups and leading Team USA at the international level -- Mike brings a championship-level presence behind the bench
"I’ve gotten to know Mike very well over the years
NHL Tonight reacts to the Rangers hiring Mike Sullivan as their newest Head Coach
Pittsburgh was 34-26-12 and finished 11 points behind the Montreal Canadiens for the second wild card into the playoffs from the Eastern Conference
It's the third straight season the Penguins have missed the postseason
He also coached the United States to a second-place finish at the 4 Nations Face-Off and will coach the U.S
Sullivan is 479-311-112 with 15 ties in the regular season and 47-42 in the playoffs for Pittsburgh and the Boston Bruins
He is the sixth-winningest among active coaches in the NHL
behind Paul Maurice (916 regular-season victories)
Sullivan previously worked for the Rangers as an assistant for four seasons (2009-13) on coach John Tortorella's staff
It was a significant drop-off from 2023-24
when they won the Presidents' Trophy (55-23-4) and lost to the Florida Panthers in six games in the Eastern Conference Final
we fell short across the board," Drury said after Laviolette was fired
We know our fans are frustrated and they deserve a better season than this
Four teams are without a coach: the Anaheim Ducks
Chicago Blackhawks (Anders Sorensen) and Philadelphia Flyers (Brad Shaw) -- finished the season with interim coaches
Mike Sullivan is out as Pittsburgh Penguins coach. The search is on for a new one. Sidney Crosby is going to Sweden to play in the World Championship
For a team that hasn’t played a game in almost three weeks
Will Sidney Crosby demand a trade now that Mike Sullivan is no longer his coach
but it’s a legitimate topic I’ll be writing about soon
who is close with Sullivan on a personal level
to say nothing of his admiration of Sullivan as a coach
is famously set in his ways and very comfortable with Sullivan as his coach
The Penguins captain is also very smart and a total professional
I’m sure he understands what Kyle Dubas is dealing with
Crosby also understands perfectly well that
the Penguins haven’t reached the playoffs in three years
He knows change is inevitable when that is the case
My advice for Dubas is to include Crosby in the coach search
Crosby and Dubas will both be representing Team Canada in Sweden for most of May
They’ll have lots of time to get together in Stockholm and talk about the Penguins’ future
But Crosby isn’t just another captain and isn’t just another great player
What aspect of Sullivan’s departure surprised you the most
he wondered to himself whether Sullivan and the Penguins were the right fit
Do you think Dubas would have taken the job as Team Canada GM at the World Championship
if he knew a coaching change for his Penguins was imminent
Sullivan and Dubas spoke on a couple of occasions after the season
There was a difference in opinion about how quickly the Penguins can and should aggressively move toward being a playoff team again
Dubas is willing to be more patient than Sullivan was
I don’t think there’s much more to it than that
Do you think the Penguins’ plan is longer than expected with the firing of Sullivan
The timeline can be a lot longer then we think
Dubas uses the word “urgent” frequently when discussing the Penguins’ return to Stanley Cup contention
And we don’t associate urgency with patience
He’s made it clear that he doesn’t just want the Penguins to be a team that settles for squeaking into the playoffs
he wants to build a team that can be special for a long time
I can see why Sullivan wanted to rush things
I guarantee you Crosby’s form had plenty to do with Sullivan’s desire to be aggressive in free agency this summer
Do you get the sense that Dubas’s decision was more about needing a change in general or that Sullivan wouldn’t be the right coach to execute a rebuild
I just think he and Sullivan were no longer on the same page
It didn’t hurt that this came at a time Sullivan knew very well that the New York Rangers were frothing at the mouth for him and eager to throw and obscene amount of money in his direction
With Dubas wanting to take a slower approach to the process
do you feel like Tocchet is still an option
I imagine Philly would want to lock him in right away
No doubt, this is an issue. Dubas likes Rick Tocchet
He wanted him to coach for Team Canada in Sweden this month
Tocchet turned him down because he knew a storm was brewing in Vancouver
I do believe Tocchet has interest in Pittsburgh
Tocchet also turned down a ton of money in Vancouver
He clearly wants to coach again next season
I think we are in store for a very fun offseason
If David Carle ends up being the head coach
can you see a scenario where the vets immediately tune him out due to age and lack of NHL experience
I think Rick Tocchet is still the man to take over
I could see a young coach having trouble dealing with Hall of Fame players who are older than him
Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang are all-time great Penguins
but that doesn’t mean they’re easy to coach
I don’t know that anyone can get through to Erik Karlsson
Tocchet is probably the safest pick, and potentially the best. He was the NHL’s coach of the year 12 months ago
Things fell apart this season in Vancouver
though I’m not sure how much of that was his doing
He’d bring much-needed toughness to the Penguins
And for anyone who thinks the Penguins need a young coach to help train younger players
I assure you that you could do worse than Tocchet
Jake Guentzel or Conor Sheary about Tocchet’s influence on them when they were rookies
Hey Josh – how explicitly would Dubas & coaching candidates talk about the team (potentially) being bad for the next 1-2 years and what that might mean for this new coach
Would candidates be wary of “rebuilding” for 2-3 years then being fired before the team gets good again
doesn’t want to be part of a lengthy rebuild
Is there any chatter about the timeline for the rebuild
But I’ve always had the sense from Dubas that the Penguins intend to turn aggressive in the summer of 2026
Malkin probably will retire after next season
they’ll have more than $50 million in cap space by next summer
That number figures to decrease between then and now
they’re going to have big money to spend by the summer of 2026
Rutger McGroarty and Ville Koivunen will have a full year under their belts
Harrison Brunicke and Sergei Murashov should be NHL players by that point
you’ll have potentially multiple first-round picks from the 2025 and 2026 drafts who could be NHL-ready
Someone who has a history with coaching younger guys
What do you think of Carle and his chances (or our chances)
and Dubas isn’t afraid to go with someone without NHL experience
Given that he wasn’t interested in the Chicago Blackhawks job
Favorite player from the Fla/TB series u just covered (besides Jake)
and nothing about him on the ice is boring
If Kris Letang doesn’t go to Dumoulin’s side for some unknown reason at the beginning of the 3rd period of Game 5 2018
do the Pens win that series and Ovie remains Cupless
I had a lengthy talk with Crosby about that series recently
He remembers tiny details that you and I have long forgotten
and it became very clear to me that he is still bothered by the result of that one
if Letang didn’t have the worst period of his life in Game 5 — I truly have no idea what he was doing on the goal you reference
and I can still see the helpless look on Dumoulin’s face when I asked him about it after the game — I believe the Penguins would’ve won that series
But the Caps probably still would have won the Cup in the years after
I suspect they cared a little bit less after they finally got one
Favorite Marc-Andre Fleury personal interaction with him
But I remember one time in Columbus long ago
I told him before the game that I wanted him to get a shutout because the cannon they shoot off after goals scares the crap out of me
but the fact that I mentioned it probably meant the shutout hope was doomed
Fleury got the win but did not get a shutout
When I walked into the locker room following the game
More to come on the coach search and many other topics soon

The New York Rangers are in advanced contract talks to make former Pittsburgh Penguins coach Mike Sullivan their next head coach
sources told ESPN's Emily Kaplan and Kevin Weekes on Thursday
The deal is expected to be one of the richest coaching contracts in NHL history
Sullivan would head to New York in a move that is coming together three days after he left his job with Pittsburgh
where he coached for 10 seasons and won back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2016 and 2017
The Penguins have missed the playoffs for the past three seasons amid a retooling of the roster
Quinn will be a candidate for other head coaching vacancies
John Tortorella is a strong possibility to rejoin the Rangers organization
Quinn and Tortorella were on the coaching staff for Team USA at Four Nations
who was fired after the Rangers didn't make the postseason for the first time since 2021
Sullivan was selected by the Rangers in the 1987 draft but never played for New York
choosing to stay in college at Boston University before going on to an 11-year NHL playing career with four teams
Sullivan, 57, previously served as a Rangers assistant coach from 2009 to 2013 on Tortorella's staff. He also was the head coach of the Boston Bruins for the 2003-04 and 2005-06 seasons

Sullivan County and specifically Sullivan County Emergency Medical Services
received the incredible news that they are to be awarded a support grant valued at $500,000 dollars
the announcement was met this thunderous applause and gratitude
Plans are already being devised with how to put the grant money to proper use
Details regarding the grant and what it will be used for were revealed in a press release obtained by WPDH and also posted to the Sullivan County, NY Government Facebook page
It was stated that the $500,000 dollar grant is the maximum amount awarded by the NYS Department of Health
Sullivan County officials applied for the grant after gaps were identified in the counties EMS system
These "gaps" impacted EMS provider capabilities
and response time according to Public Safety Commissioner Scott Schulte
Schulte would continue to make a number of statments throughout the press release detailing in many ways how and what the $500,000 dollars will be going towards
The grant money awarded is going to push along a number of investments and improvements for Sullivan County's EMS
which is critical this time of year as calls to the 911 Center increase as we get closer to and during the Summer
Schulte stated that the grant money will be going towards..
extensive recruitment and retention initiatives
equipping local EMS agencies with needed diagnostic tools
increasing affordable training opportunities
and contracting with an EMS provider to address peak-season capacity issues
The grant will be divided out over the course of a "four-pronged initiative"
The part one of the initiative will focus on free EMT training (including for advanced EMT certification) as well acquiring EMS supplies
Part two of the initiative will be recruitment/retention campaign
Parts three and four of the initiative plan are definitely more hands on and will focus on..
moving toward standardizing the level of care throughout all our EMS agencies at the highest-possible level of Basic Life Support
and bringing on more resources during the busy summer season
Examples of this would be equipping local agencies with enhanced heart attack detection equipment and adding EMS units which is being planned for the months of June
Whether it's our local law enforcement
it's always a good to see these vital parts and people in our communities getting additional support so they have the ability to do their jobs as best as possible when we do need them most

The New York Rangers have hired Mike Sullivan, the team announced Friday
finally landing the coach that Chris Drury has coveted since becoming general manager four years ago
The coaching staff under Sullivan has not been finalized
but will not include former Rangers coach John Tortorella
Sullivan, 57, parted ways with the Pittsburgh Penguins on Monday after a decade coaching in Pittsburgh
The Penguins won back-to-back Stanley Cups in Sullivan’s first two seasons after he took over from Mike Johnston 28 games into the 2015-16 season
Sullivan became as synonymous with the Penguins as any of his star players in the past 10 years
winning just one playoff round since those back-to-back titles
three different general managers and the decline of some of his top stars
Sidney Crosby is still playing at a high level at age 37
but Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang have fallen off
and a flat salary cap for the past several years has limited Pittsburgh’s ability to adapt to a changing NHL environment
The Penguins finished with 80 points this season
But the drop-off in the Penguins did not diminish other teams’ interest in Sullivan, particularly the Rangers‘. Clearly, Drury felt the need to act quickly to land Sullivan with several teams searching for a new coach
“Mike Sullivan has established himself as one of the premier head coaches in the NHL,” Drury said in a release
“Given his numerous accomplishments throughout his coaching career — including two Stanley Cups and leading Team USA at the international level — Mike brings a championship-level presence behind the bench
“As we began this process and Mike became an available option for us to speak with
Sullivan was a Rangers assistant under Tortorella from 2009 to ’13
a span that included Drury’s final two seasons as the team’s captain
When Drury took the GM job after the 2020-21 season
he fired David Quinn and put out feelers to see if Sullivan would be interested in leaving Pittsburgh
where Fenway Sports Group had just taken over as owner
Sullivan signed a three-year extension through 2026-27 for $5.5 million per
making him one of the highest-paid coaches in the league
Drury settled for Gerard Gallant at the time, then fired Gallant after two years despite a trip to the Eastern Conference final in 2022. The same happened with Peter Laviolette, who was fired on April 19 after two years that included a 2024 Presidents’ Trophy and Eastern Conference final appearance
Between the revolving door of coaches and the roster upheaval this season
The bond he forged with the Penguins’ stars
helped drive that team to consistency even as it declined
Miller — whom Sullivan coached in his first stint with the Rangers over a decade ago and at the recent 4 Nations Face-Off — the Rangers have elite talent in place but need to become far more consistent
Chris Kreider, who also played for Sullivan with the Rangers and at 4 Nations, was seemingly a goner in the back half of the season. Sullivan may be able to rekindle his game. Panarin, whose settlement in a sexual assault allegation from last year was reported by The Athletic on April 17
has plenty of heat around him and could be moved this offseason
Mika Zibanejad’s future is up in the air despite a full no-move clause
The Rangers have holes throughout their lineup
Another lengthy coaching search could have made all this roster uncertainty even worse
But Drury waited out the Penguins’ decision and
as part of the immediate reaction to Mike Sullivan being hired as coach of the New York Rangers on Friday
who failed to live up to expectations this season
missing the Stanley Cup Playoffs after winning the Presidents' Trophy and reaching the Eastern Conference Final last season
who for all of his success with the Pittsburgh Penguins
including back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in 2016 and 2017
could not get them to the playoffs in his final three seasons before mutually parting ways Monday
that's one huge component of it," Brian Boyle told NHL.com
"If you make the life of the goaltender easier
You just need your top players to not disappear
He played for Sullivan when the coach was an assistant with the Rangers from 2009-13
Boyle works part-time as a Rangers analyst and broadcaster on MSG Networks
He knows Sullivan. He knows the star players who have thrived under Sullivan, namely Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang with the Penguins
He knows what the Rangers didn't do last season
"'Sully' is still unbelievable of making sure everybody knows exactly what is expected of you," Boyle said
I think that's what makes a coach successful; understanding your personnel and figuring out a plan for that group to have success is what he does best
All the coaches in the League know the game extremely well
but he knows his players extremely well and puts them in places where they're going to succeed and the team is going to succeed
"When we would go on win streaks or when we were on losing streaks or not playing our best
He is tremendous at staying on target all while having a plan
Now it's going to help him a lot if some of these stud guys are already in the gym trying to get better because there are some of them that
He's going to demand it because his camp is not easy at all."
All of that will be in line with Sullivan trying to bring the Rangers an identity
which they lost along the way this season under former coach Peter Laviolette
"I think there's a lot of guys not playing with confidence and I feel like there's been a lack of accountability," former NHL forward Mike Rupp said
"Those are pretty major things and I think he's one of the most perfect guys for the job because of those things."
played for the Rangers when Sullivan was an assistant in New York
He worked as a Penguins analyst and broadcaster
and in the same functions with the Rangers
"When you go back to the 2015-16 season when he got hired in Pittsburgh
there was that clip of him yelling at Malkin on the bench
shut the [expletive] up,' right to his face," Rupp said
hard-headed and that's what I love about him
maybe he did that more in the room that we didn't see
it worked with that group and the big guys loved him
If he's willing to do that to Evgeni Malkin
you have to think he's going to do it to me."
about what the Rangers can do for Sullivan
Mike Sullivan agrees to become Rangers new head coach
Then they went 4-15-0 in their next 19 games
When they were in a playoff push down the stretch
they went 5-8-1 from March 15 until they were eliminated from playoff contention April 12
Jacob Trouba, Kaapo Kakko and Ryan Lindgren all were traded as part of the Rangers attempting to reconfigure the core. J.T. Miller was acquired
but couldn't make up the difference with 35 points (13 goals
22 assists) in 32 games after being acquired Jan
and unfortunately for Lavi this year his top guys stopped playing," Boyle said
Sullivan will have a say in who stays and who goes
He has coached against the Rangers enough in the Metropolitan Division to know the team as intimately as an opposing coach can
Trocheck and Fox as the United States coach at the 4 Nations Face-Off in February
coach for the 2026 Milano Cortina Olympics
But everyone who shows up on Day 1 of training camp has to believe and buy in to Sullivan the way the Penguins did for years
That's what the Rangers can do for Sullivan
There's zero doubt he'll attempt to do everything else mentioned above for them
"We've seen too many years that the Rangers have been a power play and a goaltender," Rupp said
"They need an identity they can go back to every single night

The addictively cozy romance set in a coastal Nova Scotia hamlet returns hotter than ever, which is fitting since we last saw Sullivan’s Crossing’s beloved diner going up in flames
“Maggie has returned to the Crossing after having packed up her life in Boston and is starting a new chapter in her life.”
But all is not smooth sailing for the couple
Maggie got some unexpected news last season that
paired with the fallout from the fire — did her dad make it out alive?
— could cast a tragic pall over their future
“[They] move their relationship forward but eventually Cal starts to question whether Maggie realized what she would be giving up by moving to be with him.”
it seems that Roth knows what the fans want: to see this pair finally get to have some happiness
When asked to tease the biggest joys on the horizon
she simply stated that “Maggie is not the only one who finds romance in Season 3.”
So who else do you think is going to wind up having that loving feeling this year

He’s the only one who can change the Rangers’ culture and tell Chris Drury "no."
In my end of season eulogy—which was met with rousing applause (and those of you here on free plans can't tell me otherwise)—I wrote the following:
I wrote the story before Peter Laviolette was fired
and broad-stroked the idea through the story that one of the things Chris Drury was going to need to change (and more specifically
(A topic we spent over an hour on during this week's podcast.)
After "mutually agreeing" to part ways with Pittsburgh
Sullivan instantly jolts to the top of Drury's coaching wish list
And if you believe all the speculations and whispers about the two sides being linked
Sullivan isn't just a big name in the coaching sphere
the former New York Rangers' assistant coach under John Tortorella won back-to-back Stanley Cups in Pittsburgh over a 10-year stint behind the bench
forcing his forwards up to forecheck for the push
and pushing opponents along the walls with speed
demanding players jump cuts and try to swarm the puck
opens the team up for pucks to go the other way
which is probably why having the best goaltender in the world would be an attractive idea
But let's move beyond the blocking and tackling
We can talk about that if (when) he officially signs
Let's talk about the two things he does change right away if he walks through the door: Team culture
and Chris Drury's unilateral hold on power within the organization

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin (left) and former Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan
“And the Penguins parting company with Sullivan just highlights how ludicrous it is that (the Steelers) keep Tomlin no matter what
because it’s a very similar situation and very similar resumes
I think Tomlin has never been a good coach.”
That’s despite the fact he hasn’t won a playoff game since the 2016 postseason
the Steelers just don’t fire their coach,” Madden said
… But there’s this pervading notion that if you win a championship
It’s definitely a bad dressing room,” Madden said
“They got rid of some of the guys that made it bad
It’s going to be tough to handle for Sully.”
Madden insists it won’t be all bad for Sullivan
“The one thing he does have is an excellent goalie
(Igor) Shesterkin has gotten the Rangers as far as the Conference final twice,” Madden added
“But they didn’t make the playoffs this year
and I do think there’s some work to be done.”

The Rangers worked quickly to snatch up their top coaching candidate, officially hiring Mike Sullivan only four days after he was let go by the Pittsburgh Penguins
Multiple reports suggest the new contract will make him the highest-paid coach in NHL history
which shows how much team president Chris Drury and owner James Dolan coveted the man who several league sources believe has been their No
Mike Sullivan: 3 things to know about the Rangers' new head coach
That cost former head coach Peter Laviolette his job and opened the door for Sullivan
He'll be facing numerous questions − many of which will take months
to answer − but we'll begin by examining seven of the most pressing dilemmas
Can he win without Sidney Crosby? We’re going to find out
Sullivan won back-to-back Stanley Cups behind the best player of this generation
which is an easy way for critics to try and discredit those accomplishments
But Crosby had only won once in 10 seasons before Sullivan’s arrival and has always spoken glowingly about the coach’s influence in propelling the Penguins back to the top
Crosby has maintained his high level of play into his late-30s
but the rest of the Pittsburgh roster has crumbled around him
Diminishing returns from co-stars Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang
shaky goaltending and a scarcity of young talent has led to three straight seasons missing the playoffs
Sullivan shares some of the blame for that falloff
but the whole situation had grown stale in recent years
Now he’ll get a chance to start fresh and prove he can win without the great No
One of the few gripes Penguins fans had with Sullivan was the lack of development on his watch
but the other side will argue that he was working with one of the league’s weakest prospect pools
Pittsburgh consistently traded away draft picks to chase Cups
leaving their pipeline thin on impact players who could help the NHL club
When Sullivan had notable young talent during the championship years – specifically forwards Jake Guentzel
defensemen Brian Dumoulin and Olli Määttä and goalie Matt Murray – he didn’t hesitate to unleash them
It will be critically important for him to elevate the next wave of Rangers
That’s been a struggle for Sullivan’s predecessors
with both Laviolette and Gerard Gallant reluctant to trust the products of the rebuild era
led to frustration and fractured confidence
Brennan Othmann and top prospect Gabe Perreault
It’s hard to envision the Rangers bouncing back and sustaining any level of success if several of those players don’t graduate to more prominent roles and provide production
3. Can he salvage Mika Zibanejad?Pretty much all the Rangers’ core veterans are coming off down years, so Sullivan will have his hands full trying to help them rediscover the magic of years’ past. But none seem quite as vexing as the 32-year-old Swede
Zibanejad’s play has slipped for two consecutive seasons now
but the first half of 2024-25 was downright alarming
He looked like a shell of himself while managing only 21 points (six goals and 15 assists) through the first 36 games and spoke openly about the mental struggles it caused
And while he rebounded with a much-improved second half
concerns about how a contract that pays him $8.5 million annually and has five years remaining will age have been amplified
but Zibanejad controls his own destiny with a full no-movement clause and doesn’t seem particularly interested in leaving
it will be one of Sullivan’s primary responsibilities to reinvigorate a player who not too long ago ranked as one of the NHL’s top scorers and better all-around centers
Whether that means permanently moving him to right wing
where he found some success late in the season
or shifting him back to the middle is a key question
But the bottom line is the Blueshirts need more out of Zibanejad
One of the most perplexing storylines to emerge in this lost season was the precipitous drop of the Rangers' once-vaunted power play
For a five-year run that began with the 2019 arrivals of Adam Fox and Artemi Panarin
New York's PP ranked fourth in the league with a 24% conversion rate
They were remarkably consistent − a pillar of the team's success during that time
But despite returning all five members of their top unit − Fox
Chris Kreider and Vincent Trocheck − the 2024-25 power play plummeted all way to 28th while converting only 17.6% of the time
with the Rangers going 5-for-55 in their final 22 games while allowing four shorthanded goals
Their 9.1% success rate in that span ranked dead last
How could such an accomplished unit look so lost and disjointed
Sullivan will have to figure that out and make the right choice for whichever assistant coach is tasked with overseeing that effort
Sullivan will also have to pick the right person to coach up a group of defensemen who all stagnated or regressed under Laviolette and associate head coach Phil Housley
Helping Miller and Schneider take the next steps will be crucial, but they're not the only ones who experienced more downs than ups under the previous staff. Ryan Lindgren and Jacob Trouba went from physical tone-setters to borderline liabilities, which led to both being traded, and even Fox seemed to lose some of his magic
The 2020-21 Norris Trophy winner didn't make his usual dynamic plays with the same frequency and wore down under the weight of difficult defensive assignments
It will likely require outside help to upgrade a D corps that's not on par with the big
tough and mobile groups we see excelling in the playoffs
putting the onus on Sullivan and his defensive signal caller to get them trending back in the right direction
Sullivan will become the latest coach to take a crack at trying to transform a bunch of east-west
That was an endless source of frustration for Gallant and Laviolette (and even David Quinn before them)
raising questions about whether any coach can shake the Rangers of their bad habits
The 57-year-old is expected to implement a fast-paced, straight-ahead system that gets pucks deep and applies pressure with a relentless forecheck, which sounds similar to what Gallant and Laviolette tried to achieve but didn’t have the horses for
One notable difference is that Sullivan prefers a zone defensive scheme
which could be a good thing after the Rangers often looked lost in Laviolette’s demanding man-to-man coverage
but achieving a lasting buy-in the previous two coaches couldn’t maintain beyond their first seasons will be the true test
this dare-we-say-soft version of Blueshirts tend to lose battles in the high-danger areas and fall back on high-risk passes that lead to inordinate odd-man rushes against
That’s why they ranked as one of the NHL’s worst defensive teams this season
but if Sullivan somehow changes that − or shows the ingenuity to adapt his system to this personnel − it will serve as proof that he’s one of the best coaches in the world
Drury can help the cause by bringing in players who fit the mold of what his new coach wants to accomplish
For all the on-ice problems to fix – of which there are many – there may be just as many fences to mend off of it
A walking-on-eggshells feeling took over as the season wore on and surely contributed to the lackluster results
It’s going to take a savvy culture-setter to effectively bridge the gap that seemed to widen between players and management
Sullivan has a reputation for being just that
which earned him high marks and wide respect from those he coached in Pittsburgh
And he's known for being an upfront communicator who cares but doesn't sugarcoat and prioritizes making sure players know where they stand
Drury defended Laviolette's communication process
which by all accounts was an improvement over Gallant's hands-off methods
but there was too much smoke for there not to be any fire
Multiple players expressed frustration with how they were handled and lamented uneven accountability
who has developed his own reputation for being secretive and ruthless
Much of the sagging morale and general paranoia stems from the top
Sullivan is uniquely positioned to effect change under a general manager who seemingly values his opinion and can't afford to get this hire wrong
Vincent Z. Mercogliano is the New York Rangers beat reporter for the USA TODAY Network. Read more of his work at lohud.com/sports/rangers/ and follow him on Twitter @vzmercogliano
Days after parting ways with the Pittsburgh Penguins, two-time Stanley Cup winner Mike Sullivan is set to become the 38th head coach in New York Rangers' history
The 57-year-old will replace Peter Laviolette, who was let go on Apr. 19 after only two seasons on the job
The Rangers are hoping for more longevity this time around
with the Sullivan hire ending a multi-year pursuit for Drury
The newly extended team president had him at the top of his wish list in each of the previous two coaching cycles − in 2021 when he hired Gerard Gallant and in 2023 when he landed on Laviolette − but Sullivan was entrenched in Pittsburgh
where he spent 10 seasons while compiling a 409-255-89 record and winning back-to-back championships in 2016 and 2017
The Penguins have fallen off in recent years and missed the playoffs in three straight
but it hasn't done much to diminish Sullivan's sparkling reputation around the NHL
An aging core and lackluster pipeline of young talent are considered the primary reasons for Pittsburgh's slippage
native remained such a hot commodity once he became available Monday
Pens general manager Kyle Dubas has outlined a rebuilding plan that will require some patience
which triggered the decision to move in a different direction and allow Sullivan to pursue win-now opportunities elsewhere
"Mike Sullivan has established himself as one of the premier head coaches in the NHL," Drury said in a statement
"Given his numerous accomplishments throughout his coaching career - including two Stanley Cups and leading Team USA at the international level - Mike brings a championship-level presence behind the bench
I've gotten to know Mike very well over the years
"As we began this process and Mike became an available option for us to speak with
He'll have his work cut out for him in New York
The Rangers have a roster filled with questions after missing the playoffs for the first time in four years and ranking as one of the worst defensive teams in the league
They're in the midst of a makeover that's expected to continue this summer
but having goalie Igor Shesterkin as the team's backbone and accomplished talent in front of him was enough to entice Sullivan
Owner James Dolan's deep pockets surely didn't hurt
They're both Boston University alumni and have strengthened that bond through their work with USA Hockey
most recently with Sullivan serving as head coach and Drury as assistant GM at this year's 4 Nations Face-Off
It's possible that other USA Hockey folks could follow
That may include keeping Laviolette assistant Dan Muse on the coaching staff
but even more noteworthy is mutual interest from former Rangers head coach John Tortorella
Sullivan worked under him as a Blueshirts' assistant from 2009-13 — the first two seasons with Drury as team captain — with the roles reversed when Tortorella served as an assistant for Team USA at 4 Nations
Now they could reunite as a power duo behind a familiar bench
He's already considered by many to be Drury's best hire in three tries
Sullivan is a proven leader who shouldn't carry the same retread label as Gallant and Laviolette after spending a largely successful decade in the same place
but he won't be able to plug all the holes on this sinking ship single-handedly
The onus falls on the front-office boss to provide his latest coach with the horses to pull off this turnaround
JoeBucFan.com draft guru Sean Sullivan (left) alongside Sage of Tampa Bay Sports Ira Kaufman
Sullivan stunned the mock draft world with his 2025 results
In the world of scoring mock draft results
getting seven first-round picks accurate represents a good finish
Joe has loads of respect for NFL insider Peter Schrager of ESPN
His 2025 mock draft (and he only releases one) saw Schrager nail seven first-round picks
and one could argue he deserves a “No
8” because he predicted the Giants would trade up to grab quarterback Jaxson Dart
Schrager did not have the Giants’ correct trade team or slot
He had New York dealing with the Rams at No
Charlie Campbell of WalterFootball.com is another strong source when it comes to mock drafts
Campbell has a successful history and has been a year-round draft guy for many years
(Joe sees Campbell at NFL events chatting it up with NFL front office types and agents.)
Campbell was a guest on WDAE radio last week saying he hit nine first-round picks in this draft
He called it a successful result but noted he’s had better
Joe reviewed Campbell’s 2025 draft and he nailed the first 4 picks of the draft
And Campbell awarded himself his call of the Chiefs picking offensive tackle Josh Simmons at No
Kansas City traded down with the Eagles just one slot
so Philadelphia could secure inside linebacker Jihaad Campbell
Joe is absolutely fine giving Campbell that ninth successful pick
Joe also pays close attention to draft guru Daniel Jeremiah
Browns and Ravens scout is close with many team front office types
Jeremiah could get an asterisk for a ninth correct pick because he predicted the Giants would trade up for an additional first-round pick and select Dart
But Jeremiah also had the wrong team; he thought the Giants and Seahawks would make that deal at No
That’s where Sullivan detailed all his selections and nailed the first seven picks of the draft in order
They included defensive tackle Mason Graham at No
Sullivan did not predict the Browns-Jaguars swap of first-rounders (Picks No
but neither did the other draft gurus and they are taking credit for calling Travis Hunter as the No
Sullivan was on target with guard Grey Zabel landing with the Seahawks at No
plus receiver Matthew Golden heading to Green Bay at No
Sullivan put Jihaad Campbell to the Eagles and OT Josh Simmons to Kansas City
He’s got other strong draft years under his belt
which is why Joe shares Sullivan’s insights here
Joe’s giving Sullivan a standing ovation today
Jason Fitzgerald over at OTC has this very interesting nugget in Jalen Ramsey’s contract for 2025 that’s not getting enough play publicly
“For a team acquiring Ramsey they would be on the hook for a virtually guaranteed $21 million for 2025
The team (Bucs) would have the option to take on all of the cap charge this year (2025) OR to maintain the option that exists in the contract with the Dolphins and take on (JUST) a $5.826 million cap charge for this season (2025)
Ramsey has a $5 million injury guarantee on his NON-guaranteed 2026 salary of $21 million which would become fully guaranteed along with a small $2 million roster bonus on the 3rd day of league year in 2026.”
Forget his 2026 & 2027 existing NON-guaranteed salaries
as he could essentially be cut next off-season due to no guarantees nor dead money do to those
Pay option amount only in 2025 $5.826 million
Then take remainder of his 2025 salary ($15,174,000) as dead money hit on our 2026 cap
plus 2026 injury guarantee of $5 million also on 2026 cap
but for a one year rental of $5.826 million only in 2025…that veteran punk might be worth a real look
Hence why the Rams are salivating over their reunion with him
We all get so sick of mock drafts and it is cool to have Sean here local and to see how accurately he predicts for his one mock each year
Thought I was seeing the Sage and Brad Culpepper
Sean Sullivan often talks about how much film he watches
and this is a clear demonstration of his skills and efforts as he continues to nail what professional NFL GMs think and do
JOSH LISKIEWITZ of PFF mocked Egbuka to the Bucs back in October
It was a 7 round mock he had them taking ILB J
Joe only is counting final mock drafts and wouldn’t consider anything that is before free agency.–Joe
I feel like defense was the priority and should have been the focus at minimum the first three rounds
A WR could have been found in round four or five in my opinion
saints draft and offseason in-and-outs tell me they’re all-in on Manning
matching the panthers draft isn’t really possible with six picks
but I think we at least matched the Falcons
Bucky Brooks had Emeka Egbuka going to the Bucs in his first couple mocks a month or two back but then he did a couple more mocks after that and jumped on the Jihad Campbell bandwagon for both
He should not have succumbed to peer pressure
He really is the best at this… seeing his success was as much fun as the draft itself
We’re kinda lucky to have a guru like that
he’s under the radar nationally… other fans have to listen to a lesser class of analysis
The best way to grade mock drafts is to throw out any picks where the team picks someone you had going earlier that was still available now when they picked
He would have done even better by that metric
Sean’s draft podcasts leading up the draft are the most enjoyable pod available/out there.
No lie I really thought I was gonna read something about Tampa Bay
but I’m really disappointed at this one because I was hoping to figure out something about the team about the work out something
Kudos to Sean Sullivan and the cool relationship he has with JBF
Always love when you guys have him on the podcast with Ira

While he doesn't have the longest tenure in UF baseball history
he is by far the program's all-time winningest head coach with a near 200-win advantage over Dave Fuller
who won 556 games in 28 years as Florida's head coach from 1948-75
leading the Gators to its only national championship
two College World Series runner-up finishes
two SEC tournament titles and six SEC regular season titles
have been some of the rockiest under O'Sullivan with a 28-27 finish before the NCAA Tournament in 2024 and a 20-14 start to 2025 with a 1-11 start in SEC play
the Gators bounced back tremendously when it mattered the most
with a string of wins in the SEC Tournament to clinch its second-straight CWS appears in 2024
Florida has also won midweek contests against Florida State, Stetson and Georgia Southern in that span and has put themselves back in contention for a postseason appearance.
O'Sullivan will go for win No. 751 on Tuesday as the Gators host USF. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. with streaming coverage on SEC Network+.

Coaching
Here we are again. For the third time in five years for Chris Drury’s Rangers, we are excited at the hire of a new head coach
This time though it’s not just any head coach
but it’s the coach that Chris Drury has been pining for since he took over Rangers General Manager
The Mike Sullivan hire will not be the smoothest of homecomings for the new coach
as there is still lots of work to do with the roster
the New York Rangers have issues and they have quite a bit of them as well
This club saw a dramatic fall from grace as a Stanley Cup contender to a team watching playoffs this year instead of competing in them as they usually do each spring
The Rangers enjoyed historic level organizational success under the first year of Peter Laviolette’s stewardship and then found an equal level of ineptitude in year two under Laviolette that landed Laviolette on the unemployment line and Drury back to the drawing board
In walks sully with an impeccable resume that gives him instant credibility in the locker room
Sully chose the Rangers and while it’s one part of the puzzle for Chris Drury
the Mike Sullivan hire is not a magic elixir
This team seemed extremely broken last season and that’s something that just hiring a new head coach won’t fix overnight
Sullivan has a great reputation for being able to relate to players
We know he can get through to hall of fame level talent
which is something he will have to do here on Broadway
Getting through to the likes of Artemi Panarin and Adam Fox that will get him to elevate their level of play going into the playoffs will be one box that Sullivan will have to check off
But the Mike Sullivan hire didn’t happen just because of two elite talents
Possibly the biggest challenge for Sullivan will be to elevate the level of play of high ceiling kids, in particular Alexis Lafreniere, who got rewarded with a contract extension and seemingly disappeared afterward, and K’Andre Miller. As Will wrote
the biggest need for Adam Fox will be finding him a competent partner
Miller and Fox were a solid pair to start the season before Miller’s game fell off a cliff
One goal of the Mike Sullivan hire is to help fix Miller’s game
or at least identify if he’s someone that can be salvaged
In coming back to the Rangers Sullivan will have better goaltending
but that shouldn’t fool him into overly relying on Igor Shesterkin the way prior coaches have
The top goal of the Mike Sullivan hire is getting this team to buy into playing defensively on a nightly basis
This will not be easy as this group has shown itself to be headstrong and try and take the easy way out most nights
relying on skill instead of using their will
The Mike Sullivan hire won’t magically fix that compete level for the Rangers
This Rangers core has shown a willingness to compete for only the first year under three straight head coaches
Can the Mike Sullivan hire break the habit of laziness and complacency that has plagued this club for nearly the last half decade
We know it’s not just the head coach that had to change
but the players willingness to lay it all on the line to win a Championship needs to change as well

Kaplan and Weekes additionally reported that former Philadelphia Flyers head coach John Tortorella is "a strong possibility" to join Sullivan with the Rangers
The news comes three days after Sullivan parted ways with the Pittsburgh Penguins after 10 seasons and two Stanley Cups
who was fired on April 19 when the Rangers missed the playoffs one year after a Presidents' Trophy win and Eastern Conference Final appearance
Laviolette had one year remaining on his contract at the time
Laviolette led the Rangers to 55 regular-season wins during his first season as head coach
The Rangers swept the Washington Capitals in the first round of the 2024 playoffs
then clinched a six-game victory over the Carolina Hurricanes before facing elimination at the hands of the eventual champion Florida Panthers in Game 6 of the conference final
After re-signing star goaltender Igor Shesterkin to a record-breaking contract last fall
the Rangers hoped to build on that run by making it all the way to the Stanley Cup Final in 2025
Struggles early in the season led to roster turnover including the departures of former No
2 pick Kaapo Kakko and team captain Jacob Trouba
None of those moves were enough to push Laviolette and the Rangers back into playoff contention
"We came into this season with high expectations for ourselves
We must all do better–myself included," Rangers general manager Chris Drury said in his April 19 statement regarding Laviolette's dismissal
Sullivan will be tasked with directing several key aspects of the Rangers' recovery from a disappointing 2024-25 campaign
The new head coach will need to help Shesterkin
Mika Zibanejad and Vincent Trocheck recover from down seasons
Miller's long-term fit on the roster and push Alexis Lafrenière to take the next step forward in his development
He will need to fix a power play that went from being one of the team's biggest strengths in 2024 to a liability this spring
Those improvements will likely be expected on a relatively short timeline
Given that the Rangers were expecting to compete for a Stanley Cup in 2025
the franchise will be looking to make it back to the playoffs by the end of what could be Sullivan's first season in Manhattan
Sullivan parted ways with the Penguins on April 28 after his team missed the playoffs for a third straight spring
Promoted from the Penguins' AHL affiliate in late 2015
Sullivan led Pittsburgh to consecutive Stanley Cups in 2016 and 2017 but hasn't been able to find similar playoff success with Sidney Crosby since
Sullivan worked with Drury during the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off in February
and he was previously connected to the head coaching opening in New York when the Blueshirts were seeking a replacement for David Quinn in 2021
The Penguins' decision to move on from Sullivan shortly after the Rangers parted ways with Laviolette allowed New York to finally focus on their preferred candidate
Sullivan is now the head coach of the New York Rangers
For a mailbag published on Monday, Penguins insider Josh Yohe of The Athletic touched upon whether or not Crosby could request a trade following Sullivan's departure
He knows change is inevitable when that is the case."
Crosby has been a one-club man since he made his NHL debut with the Penguins in the fall of 2005
Many assumed after the 37-year-old put pen to paper on his extension that he and Sullivan would be a package deal
as Sullivan had been in the job since December 2015
ESPN NHL analyst John Buccigross is among those who suggested after Sullivan and the Penguins agreed to part ways that Crosby could ask for a trade to pursue one last title before he rides off into the sunset of retirement
Yohe addressed how Dubas ultimately decided that Sullivan was no longer the right man for the Pittsburgh job
"Sullivan and Dubas spoke on a couple of occasions after the season
There was a difference in opinion about how quickly the Penguins can and should aggressively move toward being a playoff team again," Yohe explained
"Dubas is willing to be more patient than Sullivan was."
as he's never given any real indication he will go ring-chasing in the twilight of his career
one wonders if Dubas' upcoming offseason activities could cause Crosby to have second thoughts about how he wants to finish one of the greatest careers in NHL history

In light of the New York Rangers announcing Mike Sullivan as their next head coach
here are three things to know about the 38th bench boss in franchise history:
He's a winnerThe 57-year-old spent the last 10 seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins
with the first two ending with Stanley Cup titles
Those 2016 and 2017 championships started a run of seven straight playoff seasons for the Sullivan-led Pens
but the aging roster failed to reach the postseason in each of the last three
the decision was made for the longtime head coach to part ways with the organization where his 409 regular-season wins rank first in franchise history
He's got Blueshirts' connectionsSullivan was selected by the Rangers in the fourth round (No
The left-handed shooting center never suited up for New York, though, instead completing his full four seasons at Boston University (the same college as Blueshirts team president Chris Drury) before becoming a free agent and signing with the San Jose Sharks in 1990
He went on to play 11 seasons in the NHL for the Sharks
He finally made his Rangers' debut in 2009 as an assistant coach for John Tortorella and spent the next four seasons on the New York bench
with Drury serving as team captain for the first two
Massachusetts native played for Team USA in the 1988 World Juniors and 1997 World Championships and served as head coach for this year's 4 Nations Face-Off
where the Americans took second after falling to Team Canada in overtime of the championship final
He'll remain in that position for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy
That experience seemingly strengthened his bond with Drury
who served as an assistant general manger for the U.S
at 4 Nations and has always had an affinity for fellow USA Hockey products

It didn’t take long for Sullivan to find a job after departing from the Pittsburgh Penguins
and the Rangers reportedly made a substantial offer
the Rangers signed Sullivan to a five-year contract to a dollar amount that makes him the highest-paid head coach the NHL has ever seen
While she didn’t say what the exact price tag is
she mentioned that it’s the “highest annual salary for a coach in NHL history.”
John Tortorella did speak with the Rangers but will not be re-joining after all
Believe Sullivan’s contract is for five years - and is the highest annual salary for a coach in NHL history
Sullivan still had two seasons remaining on a contract extension he signed with the Penguins
a deal that earned him $5.5 million annually
Considering his new contract likely exceeds that number
it’s possible Sullivan will be making more money than most players in the NHL for the next five years
The Rangers still have the rest of their coaching staff to fill out
Sullivan is a two-time Stanley Cup champion from his time with the Penguins and earned every dollar he’ll make on his new deal
Sullivan was briefly the head coach of the Boston Bruins between 2003 and 2005
Sullivan floated around a few teams as an assistant coach
While taking over head coaching duties with the Rangers
Sullivan will also serve as the bench boss for Team USA at the upcoming 2026 Winter Olympics

The New York Rangers have found their new coach, and it is a reunion. Mike Sullivan is the 38th coach to serve behind the bench for this historic franchise's centennial season
This would make three head coaches since the infamous "letter" was released and David Quinn was charged to lead the rebuild
with an atrocious season causing a complicated future
and he better be ready to take full responsibility for a team that doesn't know the meaning of the word
The number one thing that has to come away from bringing on a coach that has won back-to-back Stanley Cup championships and had the greatest hockey player of our generation
is that this coaching carousel the Rangers have been on for the last six seasons needs to end with Sullivan
He is walking into a vulnerable locker room
an oversharing President and General Manager
and one of the most loyal fan bases in all of hockey
and the Rangers must hit the 2025-26 season on the ground running
It has to start with the upcoming draft lottery and then the draft
Follow that up with a positive free agency period
The Rangers have wanted Sullivan for a while
so you'd have to think that even if he gets off to a bumpy start
the team is committed to keep him around all while everything else changes around him
The Rangers have had various coaches pass through Madison Square Garden over the last few seasons
David Quinn matured the younger generation
and Peter Laviolette executed this extended plan to a Presidents' Trophy
Laviolette's success was short-lived due to the result of the 2024-25 debacle
and he lived up to his track record of getting superior results during his first year on the job with diminishing returns following
did the Rangers front office get it right by replacing the right man for the job
Or did they replace the right guy for the job when they replaced Gallant
This is the only way that the Rangers can move forward
and while there's no guarantee for early results
there should be confidence that a plan is in place with an end goal in mind
