The Mediterranean Sea has become the world’s fifth Emission Control Area (ECA) for sulphur oxides starting May 1 adopted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) will require vessels operating in Mediterranean waters to use fuel with a sulphur content not exceeding 0.10% made during the 79th session of IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 79) in December 2022 marks a crucial step in reducing maritime air pollution ships must comply with sulphur limits that are one-fifth of what’s permitted outside the control area – 0.10% mass by mass (m/m) compared to 0.50% m/m The environmental impact of this regulation is expected to be substantial Calculations indicate a 78.7% reduction in sulphur oxide emissions resulting in an annual decrease of 8.5 million tonnes of SOx released into the atmosphere Particulate Matter (PM 2.5) emissions are projected to decrease by 23.7% which handles 20% of global seaborne trade and hosts 24% of the world’s ship fleet stands to benefit significantly from these new regulations the reduced air pollution will prevent approximately 1,100 premature deaths and 2,300 cases of childhood asthma annually The changes are also expected to improve maritime safety by enhancing visibility across North Africa and the Strait of Gibraltar alongside the Baltic Sea area; the North Sea area; the North American area (covering designated coastal areas off the United States and Canada); and the United States Caribbean Sea ECA (around Puerto Rico and the United States Virgin Islands). In 2024, IMO designated two further ECAs: the Canadian Arctic and the Norwegian Sea MEPC 83 approved a proposal to designate the North-East Atlantic as an Emission Control Area The initiative resulted from a collaborative effort between 21 Mediterranean countries and the European Union coordinated through the Barcelona Convention The implementation process was facilitated by UNEP/MAP which served as the forum for intergovernmental negotiations with technical support from the Regional Marine Pollution Emergency Response Centre for the Mediterranean Sea (REMPEC) and the Plan Bleu Regional Activity Centre The Mediterranean SOx ECA joins four existing Emission Control Areas worldwide alongside the Baltic Sea area; the North Sea area; the North American area (covering designated coastal areas off the United States and Canada); and the United States Caribbean Sea ECA (around Puerto Rico and the United States Virgin Islands) The regulation is expected to benefit both aquatic and land ecosystems in the Mediterranean basin In 2024, IMO designated two further ECAs: the Canadian Arctic and the Norwegian Sea Sign up for gCaptain’s newsletter and never miss an update and updates to refer to them as the Lady Snowballs These are Lady Comets and they are headed to Sulphur this week to do what they do – compete for a state championship It will be the 21st tournament trip for St “All the people before them have set the standard for this program,” second-year coach Zach Weber said “ They can’t go into games afraid of that moment They have to play just as if it’s another game.” at Frasch Park in the Division II Select semifinals of the State Tournament The winner will advance to Saturday’s championship game against Friday’s winner between No Vandebilt defeated Buckeye 7-3 to win last year’s Division II Select title as the No losing in the semifinals to Houma Christian And it might be easy to overlook the Lady Comets with a roster of zero seniors But second-year coach Zach Weber said his Lady Comets should not be taken too lightly “It’s my second year here and being able to go two years in a row is special but just the expectations on our school and our softball program – we’re expected to be there.  I think they kind of had a chip on their shoulders to get back there and get it done.” Junior shortstop Adrienne Arnett said she and her teammates felt they had something to prove this year “It’s been a lot different because we don’t have any seniors and we’re super young,” said Arnett who leads the team in hitting with a .500 batting average and hit a pair of home runs against Haynes last week.  “We’re expected to be there Weber said he has faced some challenges with his group of young ladies “We’ve made adjustments all year,” he said But we’re trying to find a little groove right here.” The Comets were certainly in the groove last week as they knocked off No She went 3-for-3 and pitched a no-hitter in a 16-0 playoff win over No Weber said either she or freshman Katie Bordelon will get Friday’s start against E.D “We haven’t had just one pitcher all season,” he said.  Weber said he  also is a little bit amazed that his team has hit an impressive 26 home runs this season “I don’t think that’s been done here before,” he said.  Junior center fielder Baileigh Tregre said she is looking forward to the trip to Sulphur “It’s just a different feeling from a regular game,” said Tregre You want to meet your goal really bad and not mess up anything.” The veteran juniors are now trying to convey that to the youngsters including freshman right fielder Emily Kenyon who will be making her first trip to Frasch Park “They’re saying it’s an experience like never before,” Kenyon said “It’s been a long journey and we’ve grown a lot as a team The biggest challenge was coming in and starting on the field.  Sometimes the expectations get to you and you get a little nervous Charles Catholic Lady Comets Softball on Facebook This Springs Neighborhood Action Plan and hosting community meetings to receive feedback The Action Plan hopes to reinvigorate the neighborhood of nearly 10,000 residents and improve the overall quality of life. Nestled just north of downtown Tampa along the Hillsborough River Sulphur Springs is a historic community that dates back to the 1920's when people were drawn to its namesake natural springs community organizations and City departments to identify and implement actions to foster a resilient community The City will be hosting a Community Kickoff Meeting for the Action Plan on Wednesday at the George Bartholomew Community Center and the public is encouraged to come ready to share their ideas. "This Neighborhood Action plan will be built with and for the community of Sulphur Springs Community engagement and participation is critical to its success," said Evan Johnson the City of Tampa's Interim Director of City Planning "It's essential that the residents and community members are a part of this every step of the way ensuring a clear vision for the future of their neighborhood for generations to come." Media will hear from the Interim City Planning Director along with Sulphur Spring Community leaders at 4 p.m on Wednesday for a preview of what's to be discussed at the Kickoff Meeting General Question? contact us the Mediterranean Sea has officially been designated as an Emission Control Area (ECA) for Sulphur Oxides and Particulate Matter (PM) This means that ships sailing in the region must now use fuel oil with a sulphur content no higher than 0.10% which is five times lower than the 0.50% allowed outside these zones The decision was made by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) during the 79th session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 79) back in December 2022 This step aims to reduce air pollution from ships and improve public health and marine safety in the Mediterranean region The IMO regulation is expected to bring significant benefits It is estimated that sulphur oxide (SOx) emissions from ships will drop by 78.7% which translates to a yearly reduction of around 8.5 million tonnes of SOx released into the air emissions of fine particulate matter (PM 2.5) are expected to go down by 23.7% which handles about 20% of global seaborne trade and is home to 24% of the world’s ship fleet is one of the busiest maritime zones in the world With over 17% of worldwide cruise traffic passing through its waters the new rules are expected to bring major health and environmental benefits According to studies from the UN Environment Programme’s Mediterranean Action Plan (UNEP/MAP) these changes could help prevent approximately 1,100 premature deaths and over 2,300 new cases of childhood asthma each year Visibility across regions like North Africa and the Strait of Gibraltar is also expected to improve The cleaner air will also reduce the risk of acidification Health experts say that lowering sulphur emissions from shipping reduces the chances of lung cancer This move has been made possible through a collaborative effort by all 21 countries surrounding the Mediterranean and the European Union The entire process was coordinated under the Barcelona Convention with UNEP/MAP serving as the main platform for negotiations Technical support came from the Regional Marine Pollution Emergency Response Centre for the Mediterranean Sea (REMPEC) and the Plan Bleu Regional Activity Centre This makes the Mediterranean Sea the fifth official Sulphur Emission Control Area in the world the IMO further designated two more ECAs – the Canadian Arctic and the Norwegian Sea the MEPC 83 session approved a proposal to designate the North-East Atlantic as an ECA as well French officials said the fuel now required under the new regulation is five times less polluting than what was previously allowed According to the French maritime authority for the Mediterranean (DIRM) many ship operators had already begun using cleaner fuels in anticipation of the law who leads sustainable shipping at the NGO Transport & Environment stated that Europe already has tough port regulations she added that “the strength of this new measure is that it will apply across the whole of the Mediterranean Sea The success of previous ECA zones has shown positive outcomes sulphur emissions in Northern Europe have dropped by 70% due to similar rules the European Commission and Mediterranean coastal countries are now considering the next step: establishing a Nitrogen Oxide Emission Control Area (NECA) to tackle nitrogen-based pollution from ships which has increased by 10% between 2015 and 2023 a separate IMO rule had already reduced the sulphur limit outside ECAs to 0.5% leading to a 70% drop in global sulphur oxide emissions from shipping Disclaimer : The information contained in this website is for general information purposes only While we endeavour to keep the information up to date and correct
