LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — Some residents living in the Siena neighborhood in the South Summerlin area are opposed to a $1.8 billion motion picture studio that may be coming to their backyard
the Clark County Zoning Commission gave the green light to move ahead with plans to build the 500,000 sqft
studio at a dirt lot near Flamingo Road and Town Center Drive
The project called Summerlin Studios is a joint venture between Howard Hughes and Sony Pictures
Many community members provided public comment both in support and opposition to the project during the zoning meeting on Wednesday
A majority of those in opposition live in the Siena neighborhood of Summerlin including Grace Likeness
who has lived there for more than 20 years
"I was there when there was nothing but desert around Siena," said Likeness
"You're putting it right next to a community of people that are looking
Likeness gathered more than 130 signatures of Siena residents against the movie studios project
"We're not against development," said Likeness
"What we're saying is we don't want an industry in the neighborhood."
who represents the district in which the proposed studio will be built
voiced his support for the project but said he will listen to the concerns of residents
"I'm excited about this project," said Jones
"It is in line with what has always been Summerlin's mission to have business employment opportunities as well as high class residential areas."
Howard Hughes CEO David O'Reilly and Sony Pictures CEO Tony Vinciquerra gave the presentation to commissioners
They promised the project would diversify the economy and bring about 10,000 jobs to Southern Nevada
"Most high paying union wages that will be working every day inside and out of these movie productions," said O'Reilly
"Summerlin has been ranked one of the best masterplanned communities for decades
That's not going to change with the building of a movie studio
Vinciquerra said Southern Nevada is an optimal location to build the next "Hollywood 2.0."
"If you produce in New Orleans and Georgia and other jurisdictions
you have to go live there," said Vinciquerra
directors can go back and forth [to Los Angeles]."
Likeness has reservations about the project and said if the project comes to her backyard
she may move out of the community she's called home for more than two decades
"If this changes the culture of the neighborhood
I might have to rethink it," said Likeness
Channel 13 has learned the next step is to push for a film tax credit program in the next legislative session in 2025

The Summerlin Avenue Improvement Project is a collaborative effort between the City of Orlando and the Orlando Utilities Commission (OUC) to enhance our community's infrastructure
This transformative project encompasses various utility upgrades
including enhancements to OUC's potable water system and the city's sanitary sewer and stormwater systems
Spanning from South Street to Marks Street
the project entails the installation of approximately 6,800 LF of water main
replacing outdated infrastructure dating back to 1938
This modernization effort involves the removal and replacement of existing water mains
and the addition of new fire hydrants to bolster safety measures
the initiative incorporates comprehensive improvements to the gravity sewer along Summerlin Avenue
accompanied by the upgrading of manholes and sewer laterals for enhanced functionality
the project includes a complete restoration of the roadway
from base course reconstruction to the reinstatement of brick pavers or asphalt paving
Pedestrian safety enhancements are a key component
with the addition of new pedestrian signals at strategic intersections along with crosswalk and curb ramp replacements to ensure ADA compliance
the project encompasses sod replacement and tree removal
ensuring a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing streetscape
1.26 miles on Summerlin Avenue from Marks Street to South Street
This street will be closed to through traffic for about 70 days beginning April 28
This intersection will be closed for about 150 days with one lane of traffic open at all times beginning April 28
This intersection will be closed for about 90 days beginning January 2025
Project work will occur Monday through Friday
There may be times when night or work on Saturdays will be necessary
Night and Saturday work will only be necessary should unforeseen circumstances or adverse weather occur
first responders and emergency vehicles will have priority access
Should any of the potential impacts above occur
the contractor will attempt to find feasible solutions for residents and businesses.
The project will result in temporary traffic disruption along the route as the entire road will be closed one block at a time for construction
The road will be demolished curb-to-curb for the construction of the utilities
there might be an occasion when certain residents will not be able to use their driveways
the contractor will provide residents with advance notice and recommend alternative parking spots on the street
and other services will continue as scheduled
Unforeseen circumstances and adverse weather can create delays that increase the project's duration and create possibility for weekend and overnight work
The city's Public Works Department is closely monitoring the global supply chain issue
The competitive bid contractor and the city will strive to complete a capital improvement project on time and within budget
due to circumstances outside the control of both entities
there may be delays for necessary materials
potential for projects to be completed over budget
We will continue to work with the community and our stakeholders to address the abovementioned issues and return normalcy to a community
Unexpected Utility Damage (Non-City Utilities):
the contractor or the city cannot and will not make repairs to cable
Constituents must contact their service provider as soon as possible if this unforeseen event occurs
please contact the construction manager or inspector and inform them of your situation
The contractor will make utility improvements on Summerlin Avenue between Marks Street and South Street
The contractor estimates the project will take 39 months to complete
What do I do if I experience an interruption in utility service or have a problem
Constituents living near and around the project may experience road closures
There is a potential for an increase in noise during project hours
Businesses and residents may experience temporary road closures
There may be times when a driveway or parking lot will be briefly impacted
the city's contractor will coordinate with impacted businesses and residents to find feasible accommodations
Should the contractor experience adverse weather or unforeseen circumstances
night and work on Saturdays may become necessary
I have concerns about traffic and pedestrians

Hours before the Federal Reserve hiked interest rates for the sixth time this year
Lombardo Homes received final approvals to move a 251-home development forward
were granted by the Lyon Township Board Nov
17 years after the development first received the go-ahead
expressing discomfort about approving a project he had never heard of before
has been dormant since it was first approved in 2005 as Elkow Farms
The property is located at the northwest corner of 11 Mile and South Hill roads
"It would be beneficial to have the original approved PD to see what has changed," Enlow said
(developers) had come back for extensions."
Engineer Leslie Zawada explained that the Summerlin planned development is part of the much larger PD that includes the Heights of Elkow and Crystal Creek South subdivisions as well as farm property that weren't required to do extensions as they were actively being built
The nearly 200-acre parcel that the Summerlin homes will be built upon is the last piece of the original planned development property, Zawada said, adding that it is also how the township ended up with the Milford park site and land that went into a conservation easement

More:These six eye-catching developments in Lyon Township will add 455 homes, industrial space
Township Planner Brian Keesey said the project rings true to the original concept and is in line with what was originally conceived
There is one fewer house than originally approved due to an existing home on the property being retained on South Hill Road
All woodlands and wetlands proposed to be retained in the original plan are being preserved
Highlights of that plan include paving of Eleven Mile Road from Milford Road east to South Hill Road; streetscape improvements and bike path on the north side of Eleven Mile Road adjacent to the parcel and on the west side of South Hill Road abutting the parcel; installation of public sewer and water facilities; creation of a large lake; and installation of a pathway system including the connection of the parcel to what is now referred to as the 11 Mile Park
Six Rivers Conservancy must still approve the final layout for connection of the pathway to properties to the west
Minor amendments to the final site plan approved by the board include requiring street lights at two entrances on 11 Mile Road and at one entrance on 12 Mile Road; changes to lot size that do not affect density; and changes to roof pitch and home façade materials to meet current market trends
director of land development for Lombardo Homes
agreed it has been a long time frame between when the planned development was first approved and it finally coming to fruition
and sometimes it's the length of time we see right now," she said
"We just enjoy working in Lyon Township and we're looking forward to continuing working there."
Thomas said the two-story and ranch-style homes similar to what is in Crystal Creek South and Windridge subdivisions will start in the $500,000 range and will be constructed in five phases
Groundbreaking is likely to occur by next fall
following engineering approval and coordination with the Road Commission for Oakland County on the paving of a 1-mile stretch of 11 Mile Road

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — It's a common question among Las Vegas residents: Why is the race for Las Vegas mayor not on my ballot
which encompasses the entire southern tip of the state
all of which have city councils and mayors
On the list: Las Vegas (Nevada's largest city
you can vote for members of the city council and for the mayor
But if you live outside of one of those cities
you're really a resident of unincorporated Clark County
While your mail still comes to a "Las Vegas" address
you're not actually a resident of the incorporated city of Las Vegas
That means you can't vote in the mayor's race
It doesn't mean you don't have representation: County residents select the seven members of the Clark County Commission
who govern the unincorporated areas the way city councils govern the cities
(The county also oversees regional services such as the airport
There is no such thing as a county "mayor;" members of the commission take turns serving as chair
The jurisdictional borders can get very confusing
The city's southern boundary runs roughly along Sahara Avenue
although it dips down to Desert Inn Road near The Lakes
That means a person who lives on the north side of Sahara can vote for mayor
Parts of Summerlin — including Summerlin West — are in the city
there are "islands" of land completely surrounded by city territory that remain under the jurisdiction of the county
you can't vote for members of the council or the mayor
although nearby residents who aren't on the "island" can
(Annexation of these islands from the county into the city has been a controversial subject in the past
which would see the city of Las Vegas and Clark County merge into one giant municipal entity
similar to the way the old Las Vegas Police Department and Clark County Sheriff's Department merged to form the Metropolitan Police Department in 1973
further discussions of consolidation have proved fruitless
But a merged city-county government would let everyone in Clark County vote for the "mayor" of the new government.)
If you see the name of a city council member
And for those of you who are city residents
remember: If none of the 14 candidates on the primary ballot wins 50 percent plus one vote in Tuesday's election
the top two vote-getters advance to the general election on Nov
But if one candidate does manage to top the 50 percent threshold

Baptist Press will continue to report every instance of sexual abuse related to Southern Baptist churches
institutions or leaders of which we are made aware
(BP) – A former volunteer for the children’s program at Central Baptist Church has pled guilty in York County criminal court to inappropriately touching a minor while at the church
according to The Herald newspaper of Rock Hill
6 to third-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor
Summerlin was sentenced to eight months in prison
He also received 30 months’ probation upon his release and must register as a convicted sex offender
After church leaders were made aware of the incident in January 2021 involving Summerlin
they immediately notified the York Police Department and surrendered all evidence in full cooperation with the local authorities
pastor William Cofield said in a statement released at the time
“The perpetrator was not an employee of the church
but rather a volunteer who had passed numerous criminal background checks as required by church policy,” Cofield said
“Central Baptist Church is sickened and appalled by the actions of Mr
“He no longer has any access to minors through this church
as he is no longer affiliated with this church or allowed on the property.”
The incident allegedly involved the fondling of a child over the clothes and was recorded by some children at the church who were not victims

LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — The Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) Tuesday received another report of a mountain lion sighting in the northwest part of the Las Vegas valley
In February a mountain lion was captured on a surveillance camera prowling a Summerlin neighborhood
roughly a month later one has been spotted near W
according to Doug Nielsen of the NDOW south office
"We have no way of knowing whether this lion and the one captured on camera elsewhere in Summerlin in early February are the same animal," he said
but making that connection would require an identifying mark or a DNA comparison."
RELATED | Mountain lion prowling through quiet west valley neighborhoods
especially in areas like this that border mountains and open spaces
There have been no reports of the animal or animals acting aggressively but Nielsen advises pet owners to supervise their animals
He also warned against feeding wild animals in general

Why Can’t I Vote For Mayor Of Las Vegas
You want to vote for a new Las Vegas Mayor
It's a very common question in Clark County every four years. Notice I said Clark County? That has something to do with the reason the Las Vegas mayor's race is not on your ballot
but actually simple: You probably don't REALLY live in Las Vegas
There are five incorporated cities: Las Vegas
you get to vote for members of the city council
but you're not actually a resident of Las Vegas
nope - you can't vote for Mayor of Las Vegas
The Clark County commissioners govern the county areas
like the city council governs the city areas
And county commissioners take turns serving as chair
Here is a map, provided by the Nevada Current
A person who lives on the north side of Sahara can vote for mayor
but your neighbor on the south side cannot
Most of Summerlin is in the city of Las Vegas - but parts of Summerlin South are not
Or do you just live in the generic Las Vegas
Here is a map that might help. Or you can enter your address here and get some answers
people wonder: Why can't I vote for Mayor of Las Vegas
A New Mayor Of Las Vegas Can Be Voted In On Primary Election Day
If one of the mayoral candidates wins 50.1% of the primary vote today
the top two candidates would move to a November 5 run-off
There are some great places, national parks, monuments, and museums to visit and explore in the United States. Some great places in the state of Nevada
But I have to share one of the places I just found out about
If you drive about four hours from Las Vegas
It's right near the beautiful Grand Canyon - but you can always see that
I'm talking about the brand new - world's largest museum - for fossilized POOP
And they gave it the perfect name: The Poozeum
If you're looking for a fun road trip this summer
interesting(?) - new attraction just opened
Most people who visit The Poozeum are actually on their way to the Grand Canyon. It's about 60 miles south of it. But
dare I say - it smells like the Grand Canyon has some stiff competition now
The poop museum just opened in downtown Williams
It specifically highlights fossilized dinosaur poop
The term for fossilized feces is coprolite. (COP-rolite, not CRA - well, you got it.) They've got around 8,000 pieces in their collection, including the largest dinosaur poop ever found: a two-foot-long specimin that they think belonged to a T-rex
the museum is free. So if you're passing through Williams
it won't cost you anything. But I think just getting a picture in front of it is reason enough to stop
Definitely check out The Poozeum if you are heading to the Grand Canyon
Here are some strange and interesting Nevada attractions you might enjoy
And it is said to be haunted - which is not hard to believe
because it is like something out of the X-Files the Scully and Mulder would have even avoided
The call it the Free Range Art Gallery
in the living ghost town of Goldfield.
The Seven Magic Mountains were supposed to be a temporary exhibit
About 20 minutes outside of Las Vegas are seven fluorescent colored
They have become a bit of have become something of a cult classic
There were over 900 atomic tests in Nevada
And people would take buses to see the testing
and enjoy watching the mushroom clouds in the sky
It was quite the attraction on Las Vegas in the 50's
But the Oppenheimer era was fierce in Las Vegas
The Little A'Le'Inn is just as kitschy as you would imagine
And all part of the heyday of the Las Vegas atomice times

Washoe Little League's softball program played its first game ever
Both Washoe Little League's 12-and-under and 10-and-under all-star teams clinched state titles July 9
The 12-and-under team advances to the Little League Softball West Region Tournament in San Bernardino, California, this weekend. Their first game against Arizona's Wilcox Little League will be broadcast on the ESPN+ video streaming service at 4 p.m
Washoe had to fight its way out of the elimination bracket in the state tournament at Golden Eagle Sports Complex in Sparks
After an opening-round 10-0 win over Fernley Little League
Washoe lost 4-3 in extra innings to Summerlin South (Las Vegas)
set up a rematch against Summerlin South in the championship game
"There was definite advantages of being in one dugout versus the other dugout."
The teams were playing on a hot July day in Sparks
"I think the Summerlin coaches had been parked in that (shady) dugout," Matter said
They very well could have had a hitting practice earlier in the day
and just told the girls to leave their stuff."
I used it as a motivation to our girls," Matter continued
how cold it was — the better team was going to find a way to win."
Washoe ended up as the better team in a game that featured 18 runs
four lead changes and a furious three-run rally by Summerlin South in the bottom of the sixth and final inning
With the score 10-8 and the winning run at the plate
Washoe pitcher Alazay Mozqueda got the final out via strikeout
but this was one of the most nerve-wracking games I’ve had," Mozqueda told the RGJ
It was equally memorable for the parents watching nervously from the stands
"Her dad watched from what felt like a mile away
Mozqueda has thrown 31.1 innings this postseason
racking up 50 strikeouts while posting a 2.45 ERA
Other team leaders in postseason play include Reese Berkich (.571 average
two home runs) and Kenzie Miller (nine RBIs)
lights to win titleWashoe's 10-and-under squad took a similar path to the championship
defeating Fernley 8-0 in the opening round before losing narrowly to Summerlin South
who had an .833 batting average throughout the postseason
"She just smoked this ball deep," Gallagher said
"and she's rounding third and just trips over her feet
but then she was out (of the tournament)."
Washoe won 9-0 after the field lights were turned off
forcing the teams to move their game to another field
"We're down to the last inning," Gallagher recalled
The lights were still on at another field in the complex
fans — found their positions to watch Kennedy Davidson throw one pitch
The win set up a rematch with Summerlin South's 10-and-under team for the championship
Washoe's Ellery Engle hit an inside-the-park home run on the first pitch of the game
but the team needed a three-run inside-the-park homer off the bat of Brynlee Mauga in extra innings to clinch a 7-4 win and the title
Durfee pitched all seven innings in the title game
allowing just one earned run and picking up 13 strikeouts
picking up 67 strikeouts; Fletcher led all hitters with an .833 batting average and Aria Wood collected 12 RBIs
The path to the dual state titles was a relatively short one
Washoe Little League launched its program just three years ago in a softball desert
Sparks and Douglas County had softball programs
but field availability was scarce on the south side of town for a brand-new league
Washoe Little League had access to the baseball diamonds at South Valleys Regional Park for games
you need softball fields for softball," said Gallagher
Gallagher launched a summer camp for girls to gain experience ahead of the pilot season; 100 girls participated in the camp
A few weeks later 68 of them signed up to play the inaugural season
"We were just hoping to have a league," Gallagher said
The league is now up to 250 participants playing games on rented high school fields in south Reno
as well as two formerly weed-strewn softball diamonds next to DePoali Middle School
pitching and catching was rough," Gallagher said
"We put on multiple pitching clinics and multiple catching clinics just to try to keep growing
The league has started a GoFundMe to raise funds for family travel
the league had raised $6,477 of its $15,000 goal
Matter said he's looked for videos of Wilcox Little League's softball team online to prepare for Saturday's matchup
it doesn't matter for how the team is preparing for the game
"Our goal is to try to control what we can control," Matter said
if we play good solid defense — which we have done for the most part — we give ourselves a chance."
Despite the increased attention on the Regionals
he's telling his players to approach the series the same as they have all year
These girls are just like you — no difference," Matter said
Gallagher thinks that's true for aspiring softball players in south Reno who want to get involved next year to make their own run at the title
"It starts with signing up for Little League in the spring," Gallagher said
Indoor film studio could be coming to Summerlin
Las Vegas has been the center point and focus on many hit movies and now it's looking like Summerlin will be the home of many new future movies
On Wednesday, March 20, the Clark County Zoning Commission all voted unanimously on plans to build a major motion picture studio in Summerlin. The studio will take up about 30 acres of Summerlin South, according to 8NewsNow
When Mark Wahlberg sold his California home and moved to Las Vegas
one of his plans was to help build a movie studio in Southern Nevada
This unanimous decision brings Wahlberg's vision this much closer to reality
The property site on Flamingo and Town Center Drive will be home to a total of 13 structures for filming and producing
details emerged that included production offices
They even showed renderings of a building that will be four stories high and reach about 79 feet

The hearing that was open to the public had union workers who of course would support the project
UNLV film students were also in attendance
One UNLV student told 8NewsNow that having local job opportunities is needed very much in Las Vegas
The project will be backed by Howard Hughes and Sony Pictures Entertainment
While people support the decision about the movie lot
who live in the area of the proposed lot spoke out on their concerns about traffic
Commissioner Justin Jones did assure those in question that their concerts would be addressed
Jones told 8NewsNow " I think this is an opportunity for not only hundreds of millions of dollars in investment and construction jobs...but the permanent jobs
the thousands of additional permanent jobs that are good paying jobs
More needs to be agreed upon and done before all will be finalized
But this is a major step in the right direction to calling Summerlin the new Hollywood

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — At one South Summerlin golf course
hawks are on the hunt for rabbits that have been chewing up the green
Falconers have spent the past week or two out at Siena Golf Club with their birds
thinning out the number of wild cottontail rabbits
Birds of prey like hawks and falcons have been used for decades to help cut down on the overpopulation of specific wildlife
which is an actual effective means for curbing nuisance wildlife
is utilized around the world now," said Dave Kanellis
"It's been probably recognized since the late '90s."
Kanellis and his wife Civon run the Airborne Wildlife Control Service
They say they received permission from the Siena Golf Course to use their birds to help them thin out the rabbit population on the course
"These rabbits cause a lot of destruction," Kanellis said
They eat up all the plants and flowers that the residents might plant in their backyard."
Some concerned neighbors contacted 13 Action News
worried about what the birds' presence might mean for small dogs and cats in the area
But the falconers working at Siena Golf Club said pet owners have nothing to worry about
These birds are trained to know the difference between a dog and a rabbit
that a rabbit is a prey species," Kanellis said
"And that's their target animal; that's what they're looking for
The Kanellis' emphasized that their birds are trained to focus on hunting cottontail rabbits
we would never bring a bird that we would ever consider a risky situation," Kanellis said
"We would only bring birds we know and trust and that we have vetted and have been working around."
DISTRICT 42 CHAMPIONS SEE 11-0 ALL-STAR RECORD EVAPORATE WITH BACK-TO-BACK LOSSES
ended almost within reach of the iconic Little League World Series for Eastlake Little League’s 12U all-star team
The reigning California District 42 and California Section 7 champions entered this year’s 10-team Southern California state tournament held in Fountain Valley with a 7-0 record and pushed that number to 11-0 with four more victories to reach the divisional championship game
One more win would push Eastlake to the Little League World Series West Region tournament in San Bernardino
the final launch pad to land in Pennsylvania
But Eastlake ran afoul of District 27 champion Torrance Little League in its final two games last weekend to prematurely end its season and take an unexpected detour along the path to the Little League World Series
coming up from the elimination bracket after ironically dropping a 6-4 decision to Eastlake in opening-round play on July 24
Eastlake could not bounce back from Saturday’s loss in falling 10-5 to Torrance on Sunday
Torrance will represent Southern California in San Bernardino
The elite six-team field at Al Houghton Stadium will also include Honolulu Little League (Hawaii)
Petaluma National Little League (Northern California) and Washington Little League (Utah)
The top two teams advance to the Little League World Series
which is fielding a 16-team United State-only division this year
It’s likely Eastlake needed four more wins
including one in last weekend’s state championship games
the District 42 champions played 13 postseason games
“It was certainly a high-octane weekend for every team involved in the So Cal tournament this year,” Eastlake Little League president Alis Nicolaus said
“Our 12’s went into this leg of the tournament knowing this would be a much tougher and challenging stretch
The So Cal region is always very competitive every year and whoever makes it through worked very hard to get there
“Our 12’s made it through some very competitive games through the whole tournament but came up short at the end
it still didn’t lessen the amazing experience it was for all those involved — players
They should know how incredibly proud we were watching them play and the inspiration they were to the younger players that will carry the league forward with the hopes to make a run of their own
“This group of young men and coaches gave it their all and I am sure the memories created as brothers will carry them throughout their lives
The future is bright for each of them and my hope is they continue on with their love of the game
That they take what they learned as part of this journey and it helps them wherever the road takes them
The beauty of baseball is that it teaches you accountability
teamwork and how to come back the next day and do it again
“Looking toward the future at our league it continues to shine bright
Being part of one of the toughest districts in the country (District 42)
you learn very quickly that this area is a hotbed for baseball
I imagine we will see another set of Eastlake Little Leaguers do this run again in the near future
We always have a lot of talent at our league but most importantly we have community and that has always been key to our success.”
in last Friday’s elimination bracket final to draw a rematch with Eastlake in the championship game
Because of the tournament’s double-elimination format
Eastlake needed one more win to extend its road trip to San Bernardino
while Torrance had to win two games by defeating Eastlake on Saturday and then in the “if” game on Sunday
Torrance rolled the dice and came up double winners with a six-game winning streak to stay on their own road to the Little League World Series
Eastlake found itself facing a 1-0 deficit in the first inning against San Carlos before Xachito MacFarland and Ethan Dang homered to give the Section 7 champions a 2-1 lead
San Carlos later went up 3-2 before Eastlake rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning
Nico Sanchez delivered an RBI-single to tie the game
Dang then scored from third base on a throw to first base on a dropped third strike for what proved to be the game-winning run
Sanchez scored an insurance run on a wild pitch for a 5-3 lead
Dang struck out the side in the top of the six inning to cap the dramatic comeback victory
“It’s amazing trying to be the best team in Southern California,” MacFarland told the media after the game
Eastlake had an amazing start in Saturday’s championship game as Liam Lee scored the team’s first run on a passed ball and Ivan Rodriguez scored Dang on an ensuing base hit
Another run scored on a fumbled fly ball to short center field
But Torrance’s bats came alive after that and did all the damage the rest of the way en route to an 8-4 win to force a championship replay the next day
Eastlake took the early lead in Sunday’s final as Lee and MacFarland both scored in the opening frame
Eastlake added one run in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth inning
but it wasn’t enough after Torrance pushed across three runs in the second inning to take a 4-2 lead
tacked on three more runs in the third inning to go up 7-2
Torrance added three more runs in the fifth inning to blunt the late Eastlake rally
Xavier Navarro scored four runs for Torrance while Gibson Turner scored three times
Lee and MacFarland both scored twice for Eastlake in the season-ending loss
District 42 administrator Ernie Lucero said he looks forward to a very competitive District 42 all-star tournament next year for all all-star divisions
“The Torrance 12s did a great job battling back after their first loss against Eastlake the prior week,” Lucero said
“Torrance had to win every game leading to the championship
including Eastlake last Saturday and Sunday
“Our Eastlake team did a superb job of proudly representing District 42
they developed a bond and friendships with their teammates
The participation in the championship games by the players will be an experience they will cherish and long remember into adulthood
“The players receive a lot of support throughout their Little League participation from parents
discipline and more on everyone’s part as the kids play little league
These experiences about dedication and commitment help shape the character of the kids in the future as they become responsible adults
Thanks to the Eastlake kids for providing us with an exciting Little League journey.”

UPDATE JULY 6: Another viewer said a hot air balloon landed in her neighborhood
Friday in The Cliffs in Summerlin South.
UPDATE JUNE 25: The battle over low-flying hot air balloons in the southwest valley is heating up after a naked woman in her bedroom was startled by a hot air balloon just feet over her home in Rhodes Ranch
She tells Contact 13 her blinds were open and she barely had time to cover up and begin snapping pictures of the balloon
Other homeowners whipped out their cell phones to show just how close the balloon came early Saturday morning coming just inches above the water hazard on the Rhodes Ranch golf course
Homeowners say this is an ongoing issue and they fear someone could get hurt while citing privacy and security as other factors for speaking out
Contact 13 sat down with Clark County Commissioner Susan Brager
who represents Rhodes Ranch and surrounding area
"I wouldn't want it be a problem for the homeowners or the balloon riders
because we would never want a tragedy or something like that to happen," said Brager
Brager adds her office has not received a single complaint about low-flying hot air balloons
but will bring up the matter during an upcoming "emerging issue" meeting
because we would need to find out what our legalities are
how do we monitor it?” said Brager about possible issues with enforcement
Brager said once Clark County leaders have a clear understanding of the issue
an ordinance restricting hot air balloons over homes could be put on the books by the end of the year
UPDATE JUNE 12: The Federal Aviation Administration says the Las Vegas Flight Standards office has received 3 complaints of low-flying balloons since Contact 13 first reported the issue on June 1
The complaints came from two specific areas including near Warm Springs Road and Durango Drive
and the Regency at Summerlin located near Hualapai Way and Sunset Road
An FAA spokesperson says the federal agency does not comment on investigations or any possible surveillance of operators
Contact 13 also spoke to the co-owner of the hot air balloon that was spotted flying feet above homes in the southwest valley on May 29 that sparked safety concerns
“We do have minimum altitude clearance, except when we are landing or taking off," said Doug Campbell, co-owner of Las Vegas Balloon Rides.
“What the public really needs to understand is
we are not down there in a specific effort to piss somebody off
or to make anybody else happy," Campbell explained.
"We are just trying to maneuver a balloon in an area that gives us a safe environment to land," said Campbell
Campbell says the 1,000 foot separation rule from the FAA did not apply to his pilot as he came through Rhodes Ranch to approach a landing zone
“The wind blows in the one direction and that is how we steer the balloon," he added
Campbell says he has instructed his pilots to avoid flying homes at very low altitudes
and adds safety of the people on the ground and in the air is always paramount
ORIGINAL STORY: A hot air balloon was only feet above a man's home in Rhodes Ranch earlier this week
Marvin Fisch says he was enjoying his morning coffee on Wednesday when he heard the sound of a hot air balloon
which I recognized as the burner of a hot air balloon and it sounded very close," said Fisch
He walked out toward his pool and discovered the hot air balloon
Land on the golf course and I'd be happy to serve you some!'" said Fisch
His morning cup of joe was had to wait as he snapped several photos of the balloon as it lingered over a golf course and then disappeared off the horizon
"I'm not sure why they come down that low," wondered Fisch
Fisch looked up the FAA regulations and found that hot air balloons must maintain at least 1,000 feet above a congested area
the FAA says if a balloon is either taking off or landing
they do not have to abide by the 1,000-foot regulation
FAA recommends that if people suspect an unsafe condition or pilot behavior to report it. They can do that by contacting the FAA’s Las Vegas Flight Standards District Office
Let's begin today with reader Lisa Bible, who's "just wondering why the Iona area right off of Sanibel
or the south Summerlin stretch" west of Bass Road misses out on popular businesses that go to other areas
That's meant long drives for inhabitants from her region
She concedes that a while back they "got a Cheeburger at the Sanibel outlet mall
who tells me she religiously reads the column
"There's lots of us full-time residents in the area. And 41/Cleveland Avenue is a bit of a trek
Are there any plans for anything new in this area?"
Now, let's start with that Saturday Night Live skit-inspired Cheeburger, Cheeburger and its 8 million different combinations of toppings
It does stand out with its south Lee County location at 20350 Summerlin Road
considering pretty much the only thing separating it from the Sanibel Island original is the $9 toll
if you don't have the darn transponder
Those places have become far and few between
with the only other remaining Florida locale in Sanford for the Fort Myers-based chain launched in 1986
it's at least 500 miles to the nearest locations in South Carolina and Alabama
and the nearby Target have been highlights for the area
but more appears to be coming your way, according to my research and several broker experts like real estate appraiser Matt Simmons
This resurgence centers around Miners Corner
where Gladiolus Drive converges with McGregor and San Carlos boulevards
It's going to take at least a couple of columns to unpack it all
"When Tanger Outlets opened that was the big new thing that was reinvigorating that corridor
That’s really the only project I distinctly remember being a new ‘thing’ in Iona," said Simmons, managing partner at Southwest Florida-based Maxwell
"I have plenty of memories in that area but most of it is from passing through it to or from the beaches
But I think that’s part of what’s changing."
There's a lot of history in those parts
dating up to 2.6 million years ago when that was an intersection for mammoths
That's evidenced by an artifact found during 1973 construction of Miners Plaza in the possession of Richard Gannon
a collector The News-Press and Naples Daily News interviewed a lot over the years based on our archives
When you look at the map, that's just about a straight shot south from the Chiquita Boulevard and Pine Island Road junction in Cape Coral where a similar 2018 discovery was made
While the Calusa did also previously rule these lands
the documented human exploits for that particular corner go back to when Donald Bain arrived in 1882 from Scotland to what became Iona and had a successful run growing pineapples
He donated land there in 1909 for a one-room school that was replaced by another one nearby in 1924 at 15961 McGregor Blvd
that in modern times became professional offices
The original building's life also has continued
later serving with its cathedral ceiling as a part of a rare drive-in church on Colonial Boulevard near U.S
It then landed with its pine floors in its final resting plot five miles east at the Calusa Nature Center & Planetarium
But the pattern of a hot and cold Iona corner had begun
building boom bust and Great Depression sunk the grandiose Phillips idea
with the boulevard now firmly operational
It was sold to the late LaBelle resident Leroy Miners
from which the corner got its informal name
The hub of historic Iona's activity for a significant part of the 20th century
this two-story structure became his favorite out of the 33 similar groceries he ran during his 82-year lifetime
in the grocery business since age 16, said in 1976
"I always liked the old-time type of store."
a transfer station for ambulances and a gathering spot for Christmas carols
Nostalgia only goes so far in businessA lot of farm workers served as his key consumers
But nostalgia only went so far for Miners
who replaced the mart with 1973's shiny 51,000-square-foot shopping destination that cost $500,000 then and brought in stores like Winn-Dixie and Eckerd Drug
That was followed by the debut of Gulf Point Square
featuring a fancy Publix that made local history
It was the first in Southwest Florida and "this side of Sarasota" to fully use the electronic marvel of its day: Scanners that read bar codes
Also touted: "Gulf Point Square is fully sprinklered
and provides an almost unheard of 5.8 parking spaces per 1,000 square feet of rental area."
Eventually other similar ventures followed
Boom time had finally come a half-century later than some pioneers had hoped
along the primary route to Fort Myers Beach and Sanibel
the tricky intersection also identified as the Beach Cutoff by the populace
became known for something else: A Bermuda Triangle of sorts that claimed too many lives with speed
its blind spots and just general confusion
and where many of us young would say a prayer from the backseat before entering
county officials by the 1990s helped orchestrate the redo you see today
But they also had arranged something else: The creation and expansion of Summerlin Road that diverted sand-seeking motorists and potential customers from the traditional Iona core
Some previously sprightly shopping centers sadly sputtered and lost their luster
A bingo hall had rolled into the old Winn-Dixie
and Big Lots was the last major tenant at Gulf Point
which also at one point had had a Masters Catalog Showroom
figuring it was just whatever was off Iona Road
Part of the state's top 20% most populated zip code of 33908
Iona's borders officially look like this for the 17,000 who now live there: Summerlin Road at the south; Pine Ridge Road to the southeast and Deep Lagoon to the northeast; Caloosahatchee River to the north and Shell Point Boulevard to the west
"The difficulty in identifying that area is part of the challenge," Simmons said. "Look at how many names/plaza names it took to clarify where you meant
(It) does often take several names to identify that area
(which) has lacked identity. I think it’s never fully adjusted to the realignment that hooked McGregor into San Carlos Boulevard and chopped up those corners
Today, the buzz seems to be coming back for that southern Lee zone in a long overdue residential and commercial growth spurt tied to the latest explosion, which already has hit most of Southwest Florida
After feeling a bit disrespected for a long time, there's all types of speculation from excited residents of what's to come including hopes for a nearby Costco and other big boxes
"Iona is going to continue to redevelop," Simmons said. "I think you’re right on that area."
Among those now in that region: Stan Stouder
the CRE Consultants founding partner who began "living in the thick of Iona" last year after four decades on the beach. Stouder agrees with the recognition factor, using the Mastique condos off John Morris Road as an example
I'm around people who have sold real estate here since then
People have no idea that there's two 20-story towers right there looking at the Gulf of Mexico," Stouder said
(I) definitely believe it's a strong and safe area for potential investment."
Folks more hungry than ever to live on or near water in the pandemic age are among the new arrivals
"It has been an axiom since the beginning of time that the closer you are to water
the better the values are going to be," Stouder said
And those are primary economic drivers for people coming here
I think the antiquity of the area and the strength of the location makes it prime for redevelopment."
He cites McGregor Pointe, across from Miners and just north at Iona and McGregor, as an example of the turnaround after the departure of Kmart, which has gone from more than 2,000 spots to just three on the continental U.S. by April
"McGregor Pointe was rehabbed in a very handsome way," Stouder said
it's a much nicer retail center than it was."
So what did it take to restore a massive hole in a footprint of 170,241 square feet near the end of the last decade
"That was dominated for many years by Kmart as its anchor," said Cindy Ray
senior vice president of leasing for Atlanta-based Malon D
which worked with local LandQwest brokers
"The landlord aggressively sought national retail (tenants.) Within a year
redeveloped and split the former 100,000 square feet Kmart space into three spaces that include Big Lots

Nick & Stella’s Pizza and Pho Fresh Deli and services such as McGregor Dental
McGregor Salon and Tony’s Barbershop
LandQwest Commercial Associate Jessica McEvoy has noticed the Iona uptick
“We’ve seen renewed interest in this area from national and local retailers alike," McEvoy said
But don't expect all the plazas around there to be resuscitated in the same way
Part of it is tied to how Miners Corner was altered
"Most of the buildings in that area were built for an infrastructure orientation that no longer exists," Simmons said

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE — Statewide supremacy on the Little League diamond belongs to the South Tahoe All-Stars
The local team of 12 and 13 year olds beat Summerlin North (Las Vegas) in a best-of-three series last weekend
at South Tahoe Middle School to claim the Intermediate 50/70 Division Nevada championship
“It feels amazing,” said South Tahoe’s Eric Vasser
who threw 4.1 scoreless relief innings and had four RBIs in the decisive Game 3 on Sunday
we’ve worked so hard and played in so many leagues — we’ve come so close so many times.”
After losing 8-6 in the series opener Saturday
South Tahoe needed two wins over Summerlin North to deliver the championship
On Sunday the local All-Stars stymied their Las Vegas counterparts 5-1 to force a winner-take-all Game 3
then rallied for a 12-8 win to take the series and advance to the West Regional tournament in the format played with a 50-foot pitching distance and 70-foot base paths
“We never thought we were down — we never did,” Vasser said

South Tahoe produced a comeback to win the state championship after falling behind early
The local All-Stars trailed by four runs after the second inning and faced an 8-5 deficit following the third — then scored seven runs unanswered to deliver the victory
and we really had to fight back and get the bats going,” South Tahoe manager Mark Lehmann said
South Tahoe began its comeback with a pair of runs on RBI singles from Cameron Lehmann and Kyle Clark that made it 8-7
Vasser held Summerlin North scoreless over the next two frames before the hosts struck again to take the lead for good
“It wasn’t a defensive struggle,” Mark Lehmann said
“There was a lot of hitting and you weren’t going to win it without offense.”
South Tahoe put its first two batters aboard and advanced them to scoring position with a sacrifice bunt from Andrew Lehmann
Jaden Aquino lined a 1-0 pitch to left-center field — a one-out double that scored two runs and put the local All-Stars ahead for good
and they rallied and caught us,” Mark Lehmann said
“To be able to come back today and do the exact same thing was great
With one out and runners on second and third following a Clark double
Vasser put South Tahoe further in front with a two-run double of his own
Vasser doubled to left field as part of a stretch of four straight one-out hits that put South Tahoe up 11-8
Vasser retired the top of Summerlin North’s lineup in order in the bottom of the sixth
and South Tahoe added a run in the next half-inning to take a four-run advantage into the bottom of the seventh
Then the local All-Stars squashed a potential rally with a stellar defensive play
With a runner on first and South Tahoe two outs away from victory in the bottom of the seventh
Summerlin North’s Ryan Schofield lined a shot toward first base
Deven Sukha snagged the hard-hit ball before doubling off the runner at first for a game-ending unassisted double play that secured the title for South Tahoe
“I jumped up in the air and Kyle [Clark] basically tackled me from third base,” Vasser said
In a game that had the makings of a slugfest early
Vasser blanked Summerlin North in relief — throwing four shutout innings after getting the final out in the bottom of the third
The right-hander struck out two while scattering two hits and a walk
and kept South Tahoe in front after its comeback
“Eric shut them down — he was awesome that was his best game ever,” Mark Lehmann said
we played some great defense and we had a lot of big hits — we still made a few mistakes
South Tahoe had 16 hits in Sunday’s Game 3
including 14 from the top six hitters in its lineup
Cameron Lehmann reached safely in all of his at-bats over the three games
and the leadoff hitter went 2-for-2 with three walks
Clark collected a team-high four hits in the cleanup spot
finishing 4-for-5 with a double and two runs
and Levi Shambaugh had two hits and an RBI
“There’s four or five guys that can hit it to the fence,” Mark Lehmann said
“They hit some great line drives and had some really good at-bats
South Tahoe forced the winner-take-all contest with a 5-1 victory Sunday morning
led by a stellar pitching performance from Aquino
The right-hander allowed an unearned run on three hits in 6.1 innings
“Jaden pitched great and we had a good handle on that one,” Mark Lehmann said
South Tahoe scored in each of the first three frames to build a 4-0 lead
Summerlin North got on the board with a run in the top of the sixth
but Aquino eventually escaped the jam — with runners on second and third and two outs
he struck out Harthic Gondy to end the threat
South Tahoe took a 5-1 lead into the seventh
and got three straight outs to even the series
Clark came in and retired the next two Summerlin North batters to secure the victory
the state championship marks the first of its kind for a group that has played together since tee-ball
Albert Aquino and Pradip Patel achieved the feat in its hometown
“It’s doubly thrilling to play a home game and do it the way we did it — by coming back,” Mark Lehmann said
“The kids are thrilled about it and super excited to get to play some more baseball.”
South Tahoe will represent Nevada in the West Regional tournament July 18-28 in Nogales
The winner of the 10-team tournament will advance to the Little League Intermediate 50/70 Division World Series

One of the region's busiest stretches of road will get busier
with more than 500 new residences planned at a gated community and a continuing care complex
Also coming soon: a new commercial center and a 140-car park-and-ride bus center under construction
County traffic count figures show Summerlin Road and Gladiolus Drive rank with some of the most heavily traveled roads in the county
There was a daily average of 42,000 two-way trips on Gladiolus west of U.S
and 22,800 on Summerlin Road north of Gladiolus
according to the Lee Department of Transportation
Each has increased about 3 percent since 2012
as development comes to sites in an area where land with troubled histories is becoming fresh evidence of economic recovery and growth-related pressures

the site will become a senior living community of 272 independent living apartments
a gated community at Gladiolus Drive and Summerlin Road will include 80 single-family homes and 100 two-family attached dwellings

Lee County has started work on a 140-space park-and-ride beach shuttle facility at 11101 Summerlin Square Drive
Venetian Pointe and Avida are on sites where plans drawn during the halcyon days of the early 21st-century real estate boom are being replaced with ideas based on new trends
the builder turned away from the 2000 approval granted a prior owner for 330 homes
The Avida site was given zoning approval for 321 apartments in 2003 before being rezoned for assisted living in 2010
and the developments will be a lot different than the earlier schemes
Marketing is driving the choices made by the property owners to turn away from what was on the drawing board a decade ago
Avida's continuing care retirement facility feeds on a growing market: about 10,000 baby boomers reach retirement daily
Venetian Pointe is targeted to reach a large
market for homebuyers interested in the Southwest Florida lifestyle
Andy Zuckerman said his company expects to sell homes at Venetian Pointe in the mid-to-upper $200,000 range and up
He said there has been a lot of interest and anticipates brisk sales
"We expect it to appeal to almost everybody
"We think in the twos to around three (hundred thousand) is a sweet spot in the market today."
upscale residential buildings and commercial properties in locations including Miami Beach
It picked south Fort Myers as its first investment in senior living under the Avida brand
"Focusing on this age demographic is new," said Colin Marshall
president of Quadrum Senior Living Management
"It is an extension of our experience on the commercial and industrial side."
The complex will include 100,000 square feet of retail space fronting on Gladiolus Road
Retailers will be pitched to the ready market of upscale residents and their affluent visitors and neighbors
"We are developing two components in concert
we want the commercial to be synergistic with what's behind it," Marshall said
"We want to bring as many community services in
the sight presented by the work by DeAngelis Diamond Construction of Naples at the Avida site is striking
as the 32-acre parcel is cleared of all sorts of plants
the county requires us to remove the invasive species," Woodward said
"What people are going to see as we develop the site is we bring back in those native species
we're not going to spend $195 million and not build something that isn't beautiful."
Quadrum is spending the money because it sees demand for the location and the product
"It's market driven; I think we're seeing growth
our market was one of the hardest markets hit during the downturn," Woodward said
we're seeing growth that is consistent and reliable."
Venetian Pointe's Zuckerman said his company made the decision to leverage the location
"We felt that offering single family (homes) for sale would be more appealing in this quality location than trying to cram in homes," he said
Zuckerman expects floor plans and an overall site plan to be ready by early April
but Marshall said the construction plan should bring the project together
but areas that do not require public health licensing
"It is a very large footprint," said Marshall
people will see the vertical profile of the community start to emerge."
Lee County will keep a close watch on the demands the new construction places on area roads
the county has required that turning lanes be built on Gladiolus and Summerlin at an estimated cost to the developer of nearly $115,000
Other improvements could be required as the properties are developed
such as a homeowners association," said David Loveland
the county director of community development in a prepared statement
whose District 2 covers part of that growing area
said the Summerlin/Gladiolus intersection is not the biggest concern in the district
whether it’s a flyover or some other improvements."
"The county has been a great partner," said Avida's Woodward
"I think this concept and some things we are going to do are new to the county
but the county has been a pleasure to work with."
