The public is invited to an unveiling and dedication ceremony of a State Historic Marker from 11 a.m.-1 p.m at the Summerville Museum and Research Center Exciting things are happening at the small museum with big stories The museum’s campaign for a State Historic Marker began in 2023 and has officially come to fruition The museum’s site is steeped in a rich history uniquely tied to Summerville This property has served the Summerville community in various capacities over the years It was used as the Eagle Creek Lumber Company from 1923 to 1928 the first Water Department from 1930 to 1951 and the Summerville Police Department from 1951 to 1991 The preserved brick facade of the original one-story building in the museum lobby stands as a testament to its past The building’s transformation into a museum was a community effort initiated by a group of concerned citizens led by Robert Pratt in 1991 following the police department’s relocation It officially opened to the public in 1992 preservation efforts and exhibit installations have shaped it into the historical gem it is today The museum's mission remains unchanged: it is dedicated to remembering and celebrating the history of Summerville and the surrounding Dorchester County This commitment is reflected in various permanent and rotating exhibits community outreach initiatives and engaging educational events the museum launched a campaign to install a State Historic Marker to share the site's diverse history and the museum’s role with future generations Thanks to generous donations received in 2024 the museum has been able to secure this important marker for the unveiling and dedication ceremony of the State Historic Marker at 100 E The community is warmly welcomed to attend this meaningful event and complimentary tours will be offered following the dedication The support from the community has been vital in ensuring that the legacy of this site's rich heritage is recognized and celebrated The museum extends its heartfelt gratitude to everyone who donated and supported this campaign We are truly thankful for your contributions and continued support Jen Johnson is the secretary of the In a time of economic turbulence and headline-fueled anxiety economist Steve Slifer offered a calming voice Tuesday hosted by the Greater Summerville/Dorchester County Chamber of Commerce and presented by BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina “Don’t freak out,” Slifer told the crowd at Middleton Place setting the tone for a presentation that balanced optimism with realism owner and chief economist of Charleston-based consulting firm NumberNomics acknowledged the multiple challenges facing the U.S economy — from inflation and trade policy to the disruptive effects of artificial intelligence — but emphasized the fundamental resilience in core indicators like consumer spending “It's a really tough time for all of us – whether we're investors I believe people have gotten a little too nervous and scared and the press is widely responsible for a lot of that.” economist for Lehman Brothers and a 10-year veteran of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors attributing it to solid consumer activity and modest gains in housing Consumer net worth is at a record high,” Slifer said “We look at our financial statements and go which Slifer described as consistent with full employment He noted that continued job stability should support spending “We’re still creating about 150,000 jobs a month mortgage rates have stabilized around 6.75% and may decline slightly by year’s end they have just enough to afford a median-priced home,” Slifer said I think that margin improves by 10 to 15% — nothing dramatic but enough to give a little life to home sales.” Slifer highlighted strong corporate earnings and anticipated a 4% increase in business investment “Corporate profits have been going up very sharply,” he said A proposed corporate tax cut — from 21% to potentially 13% — and full expensing for research and development could further fuel investment Slifer described artificial intelligence as a transformational force akin to the internet boom of the 1990s “Every single firm in this room is looking around at AI and trying to figure out how it can help make your existing people more productive,” he said Despite ongoing tariff announcements and currency fluctuations “It really depends on what you want to assume about tariffs,” he said But I don’t think what has been talked about is going to be the final thing.” While tariffs may contribute to inflation and supply chain disruptions Slifer estimated the inflationary effect would be limited — “maybe a half a percent.” Other inflation drivers unit labor costs are only up 1.8%,” he said a significant component of the Consumer Price Index highlighted the speaker’s decades of experience and recognition including multiple years as Institutional Investor's top economist and a regular bi-weekly columnist for the Charleston Regional Business Journal Slifer concluded with a note of steady reassurance but there’s no need to brace for a significant downturn,” he said What started as just a regular high school basketball game ended in a moment that would go viral across the country For Sexton High School’s 5-11 junior guard Keyshawn Summerville the buzzer-beater was more than just a split decision “I’ve always been around basketball,” Summerville said “Having older brothers who played and my dad training me from a young age ever since then it just became something I love.” That preparation came in clutch with 2.2 seconds left on the clock in the regional championship game of Sexton High School vs once leading by 20 points in the fourth quarter was now moments away from a devastating loss Then the head coach Deleon Dearing huddled up the team to draw up a play The beyond half-court shot flowed through the air and found nothing but net The crowd went into a frenzy and his teammates stormed the court in excitement you always see these moments on like ESPN and YouTube videos,” Summerville said His family and friends were there to witness the shot unfolding and The video was posted by his cameraman Rese at courtside.rese and quickly got hundreds of thousands of views on TikTok “I was like wow it's actually viral,” Summerville said who trained him since he was young couldn’t believe what just happened “I thought the game was over to be honest cause we only had 2.2 seconds,” Maurice said It's a blessing and I just ran on a court trying to find him and I couldn't I ended up falling down in the crowd and I got trampled Then I got up and I still couldn't find him Keyshawn’s father put in the time to help him reach his dreams “I saw that he had a desire to reach his goals and dreams he was serious about it and enjoyed it,” Maurice said “I just made sure I sacrificed a lot of time and got him in the gym Some of those nights I'll be really tired coming home from work but he’d want to go to the YMCA and we would go to the Y Sometime the gym wouldn’t be available and we’d just go to racquetball courts We couldn't shoot but we could do ball drill in passing The viral moment has opened new opportunities for Summerville College coaches have begun reaching out more frequently and documentaries Summerville is still grounded and understands the exposure “My parents and I have trained for moments like this and you know live in the moment,” Summerville said I'm just grateful and blessed of being in a position where I am today The moment sparked a boost in his confidence He still reflects on what might’ve been if the shot had been missed a lot of tears that night for sure,” Summerville said with a laugh “We were up by 20 points in the fourth quarter that would have been a very heartbreaking upset right there.” the hype around his game winner hasn’t faded “Every time I do go into school to go to work everybody always talks about it,” Summerville said Summerville is focused on finishing high school strong and making the leap to the next level College basketball is the next big goal and then pursuing a degree in business Summerville’s final step is the big league “That’s the dream for everybody who plays this game just getting into that main goal and just working hard every day to get there staying blessed and having a great future ahead of me.” His father hopes he carries this lesson with him on his journey whatever time you put it in that's what you're going to get out,” he said be the best you can be because you're going to get the best out of it.” In the midst of a busy week of events for Augusta University, members of the Greenbrier Garden Club gathered on the morning of Friday, April 25, at a quiet section of the History Walk on the Summerville Campus to donate and plant a tree is the first to be planted on the Summerville Campus since Hurricane Helene struck the area many of whom have deep ties to the university and the city it made perfect sense to donate and plant this tree at AU “Many of us walk through the campus – I’m not able to anymore but my granddaughter still does every single day – and we love how beautiful everything is Linda Wier has been a member of the garden club since the early 1970s and she recognized the importance of planting the tree somewhere it would be taken care of so more people can enjoy it for years to come “I love being a part of the Greenbrier Garden Club These women are all about making places within our community look more beautiful through gardening,” Wier said “After the devastation of Hurricane Helene and as we were looking for places we could do something we thought Augusta University would be a great place because they take care of things And it just is a great feeling to see this tree being planted today.” The garden club was aided in their search for the perfect tree by AU’s new director of landscaping and grounds “It was an honor to be able to facilitate locating and purchasing a tree that is native to this area and also locally sourced,” said Lacey who worked for the Augusta National Golf Club and Sage Valley Golf Club before joining AU “Donating a tree to be planted is great because it will be here for years to come In the months since Hurricane Helene tore through the area it has been estimated that nearly 4.2 million cubic yards of storm debris have been collected from around Richmond County with an additional 5.1 million cubic yards being collected in Columbia County Richmond County extension coordinator for the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension The landscape of the CSRA has been drastically altered and the members of the Greenbrier Garden Club recognize the importance of AU to the Augusta community and the CSRA But it was about more than just donating a tree It was about giving a little something back to the university helping in efforts to continue to rebuild and restore Becky McKenzie graduated from AU’s legacy institution she knows the importance AU has played in her life with her son Jason McKenzie having been an employee of the institution prior to his death last year and in the community surrounding the university “It means a lot to me to see the community come together and try to make this campus as beautiful as it once was People in this community revere the school and it’s just a great example of if you ask “If this spurs on other people – whether that’s other garden clubs other groups or individual people – that would be truly amazing.” The placement of the tree was a welcome sight to McKenzie and others as it will be able to be seen both by those walking the campus and those driving along Walton Way “I didn’t realize it was going to be planted in the History Walk but as I was telling people about this and they asked where We can’t wait to see the tree,’” McKenzie said they will remember people who have gone on what they have done for this university and beyond It’ll just be something that people will always be able to look to as inspiration for what they could possibly do.” Cathy Kron considers herself a fairly new resident having lived in Augusta “only for 13 years,” but she already sees the impact the university has had on her friends and their families “Our club is very proud to be able to do this for AU for those who enjoy the campus and for our members So many of our members have had children and other family who have come here and many walk throughout the campus,” Kron said “It is wonderful to be able to come and plant this tree because of what it means to so many people It’s in a great spot where people can see it whether they are walking along the History Walk or if they are driving by on Walton Way and maybe that will encourage others to also donate or plant trees.” Milledge Austin is the manager of external communications for Communications and Marketing at Augusta University Contact him to schedule an interview on this topic or with one of our Email JPeterson@postandcourier.com Tykesa Dixon now faces three counts of unlawful conduct towards a child after she left her three kids unattended in the vehicle that led to the accidental shooting Summerville Police Department Deputy Chief Chris Hirsch reported Officers responded to reports of a shooting involving a 6-year-old child officers located the child suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg The investigation revealed that the child had been left unattended inside a vehicle parked outside the restaurant where he retrieved a firearm from the glove box and accidentally shot himself Dixon was apprehended "without incident" by the U.S Marshals Task Force and transported to the Dorchester County Detention Center A person found guilty of unlawful conduct toward a child can be fined and/or imprisoned for up to ten years It is an injury that has stalled Crysencio Summerville’s West Ham United career but after months of frustration the winger has a date in mind for his return to action Summerville sustained a hamstring injury in Graham Potter’s first game as head coach in the FA Cup loss against Aston Villa The 23-year-old Dutchman was duly substituted at half-time as a precaution He was initially supposed to be sidelined for a few weeks but has now missed the last nine games having suffered a setback with his rehabilitation who joined from Leeds United for £25million ($32m) last summer was cautious about having surgery in the hope conservative rehab could heal his hamstring naturally and quicker another factor behind West Ham and Summerville taking a cautious approach Summerville has been rehabbing at West Ham’s training ground on his days off He hopes to return to full fitness towards the end of April The attacker is not prone to injuries and is frustrated he has not been able to help the team. Summerville was impressive in his first performance under Potter (illustrated in his player dashboard below) — he displayed how he could contribute defensively and assisted Lucas Paqueta’s goal he has not been able to build on that promising display This is the longest Summerville has been sidelined since injuring his ankle while playing for Leeds in April 2022 “The setback was at the back end of his rehab which is disappointing,” said Potter in his pre-match press conference before the 1-1 draw with Everton it was always clear we’d have Summerville back after the international break It’s fair for the individual to treat their diagnosis and treatment privately.” West Ham spent more than £120m on a total of nine players It was a shift away from their previous policy and showed a willingness to compete at the higher end of the Premier League’s financial spectrum having been crowned the PFA Championship Player of the Year for his exploits in the 2023-24 season He registered 21 goals and 10 assists across 49 appearances in all competitions and helped Leeds reach the Championship play-off final memorably in West Ham’s victory over Manchester United in October “He has been brilliant,” Bowen told Premier League Productions after the 2-1 win is a great person off the pitch and has waited for his chances he has an impact and he has done that today Potter’s attacking options are Summerville who will not feature again this season as he recovers from a broken leg Potter has recently favoured a 5-3-2 formation but previously used 4-2-3-1 and 3-4-2-1 systems He has been hampered by the absence of Summerville A case in point was the 1-0 home loss to Brentford in February when Carlos Soler played as a makeshift left-winger The experiment did not work and the Spaniard was substituted at the interval The winger was initially on West Ham’s radar in the summer of 2023 saw him rebuff interest from three other Premier League clubs The first glimpse of Summerville’s ability came in the Carabao Cup win against Bournemouth in August was a key attacking outlet and came close to scoring slowly integrated Summerville into the starting XI Only three of his first 10 league appearances were starts Lopetegui favoured playing Kudus on the left which meant Summerville was limited to substitute appearances Kudus’ form has regressed since the turn of the year and Summerville would have been a decent alternative the injury means he has failed to add to his one goal and two assists across 22 appearances this season Summerville has formed a close bond with Kudus and defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka and the duo have helped to lift his spirits as he nears a return to full fitness In February, Summerville posted on Instagram chronicling his rehabilitation personal life and happier moments in a West Ham jersey But there is one picture that referenced his mindset: “This comeback is personal.” Summerville’s belated return will be a welcome boost for Potter’s side it can only improve West Ham’s cutting edge in the closing weeks of the season Roshane Thomas is a staff writer who covers West Ham United for The Athletic. Summerville Police Department commended his officers for the arrest (WCSC) - A California man is facing several charges for kidnapping an 89-year-old woman in Summerville attempted murder and first-degree burglary Deputies said Zueros was denied bond and could face life as a felon if convicted Zueros traveled for 10 days from Mission Viejo after he and the woman were in contact online according to documents provided by the Summerville Police Department Deputies said the woman’s brother had a romantic relationship with the suspect The department believes Zueros was receiving financial support Zueros “deliberately targeted” the victim in a cross-country pursuit described as “violent and angry” by deputies when he found out the woman was giving money to charities He targeted her,” Summerville Police Chief Doug Wright said “He went there with nothing but the intent to extort money out of the victim.” Officers responded on Sunday to a kidnapping situation at a home on Muirford Village Court in Pine Forest County Club at 5:57 p.m. approached the home and told the woman he threw a football into her yard and needed to retrieve it duct taped her to a chair and sprayed her with bear repellant Deputies said he put the woman in the back of her own car they could not locate the woman inside the home but did suspect foul play was involved due to the woman’s car being missing Officers from the Summerville Police Department North Charleston Police Department and Charleston County Sheriff’s Office tracked the stolen vehicle They found the vehicle on Arco Lane in North Charleston Deputies reported after an initial inspection they discovered the woman alive under the backseat floorboards The woman was airlifted to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries Wright said her neighbors describe her as a “wonderful lady.” but a neighbor who kept an eye on her noticed something was off and reported the situation to law enforcement Wright said this was the driving factor in saving the woman’s life “After he got all the money that he would have got from her A woman who’s 89 years old who’s duct taped who’s bound by a dog leash by her ankles and has trash that duct tape around her head I say nothing more but to dispose of her that’s exactly what I believe he was gonna do He was gonna get his money and run,” Wright said There’s no doubt in my mind should have been dead within hours if not less She would have suffocated the next day or days later Wright described the situation as “unusual,” considering an adult or elderly victim when most kidnapping cases involve minors the likelihood of them returning safely is very unlikely,” Wright said “When somebody comes to your home and you do not recognize them Somebody trying to sweeten their way into your home Law enforcement does not play in South Carolina Deputies said Zueros was arrested on Wednesday in Augusta The investigation reports Zueros was out on bond for attempted murder in California He will spend the rest of his natural life in prison,” Wright said Wright said hundreds of hours went into this case deputies and personnel within multiple federal The investigation will the first significant event to serve as a trial for the town’s new drone program which was responsible for rooftop security launched in 2023 and has expanded to include a dedicated air support unit within the police department Program manager Christopher Makowski says drones are more cost-efficient than helicopters because after the drone’s initial cost “I think people are really appreciative that the Summerville Police Department is using this technology for their safety especially things that we have seen happen throughout this country,” he says ”It’s important that our leadership and our public safety entities are using this technology to support and keep our visitors and our community safe.” He says everyone who operates a drone is FAA-certified meaning they have all met FAA standards to protect the public “We appreciate the community’s support and there’s a reason we want to be transparent with this technology because we understand that drones are somewhat newer especially in public safety entities,” Makowski says ”Most public safety entities are using drones We wanted to make sure we are letting y’all know who our pilots are He says the drone program is hoping to expand and acquire more pilots for future missions which shows the terrifying moments after the shooting captures bystanders jumping in to help the child before EMS arrived This video regional final against Chelsea After losing a 16-point fourth-quarter lead with 2.2 seconds left Sexton's run in the MHSAA State Tournament looked to be over Turns out that was just enough time for junior guard Keyshawn Summerville to etch his name in Sexton basketball history Pandemonium ensued when Summerville's beyond-half-court heave at the buzzer found nothing but the bottom of the net to give the J-Dubbs a 73-71 win claiming the program's first regional title since 2012 "The whole team trusted me to take the last shot and it's all glory to God," Summerville said "It's been a dream of ours as a team to accomplish this goal and make it to the next level Sexton was feeling good through three quarters taking a 16-point lead into the final eight minutes But Chelsea started to claw its way back on the shoulders of senior guard Drew Blanton a step-back 3-pointer from Blanton tied the game at 68 Senior forward Deqaurius "DQ" Jones was big for Sexton all night long and hit a layup to restore the J-Dubbs' lead with 15 seconds left Blanton got the ball in the corner and hoisted up his fifth made 3-pointer of the quarter to put the Bulldogs up one with 2.2 seconds left and launched a 60-foot prayer to lift Sexton to the Division 2 state quarterfinals but the way that these boys bought in from the beginning of the season this is God's work right here," Sexton coach Deleon Dearing said and he made that shot because that's what he does It came down to the wire and I'm just happy we came out on top." Summerville Police searching for suspect in kidnapping of 89-year-old Sundayby ABC News 4 Staff (WCIV) — The Summerville Police Department announced Monday that it is searching for a suspect in a Sunday kidnapping that left an 89-year-old woman with non-life-threatening injuries SPD responded to a "suspicious situation" on Muirfield Village Court in Pine Forest Country Club after it received a report from neighbors saying they witnessed an "unknown suspicious" white male at the residence Police arrived and did not find the 89-year-old female homeowner but did determine there to be "suspicious circumstances that led police to believe that foul play was involved," including her vehicle being missing Surrounding law enforcement agencies were notified with the North Charleston Police Department and Charleston County Sheriff's Office tracking the victim's vehicle the vehicle was located in North Charleston near Tanger Outlets and a vehicle pursuit ensued involving SPD but later located parked on Arco Lane in North Charleston by NCPD Police determined the suspect had abandoned the vehicle and fled before locating the restrained woman "stuffed" underneath the rear folding seats in the floorboard of her own car and suffering from non-life-threatening injuries SPD added she was in "good spirits" and was transported to a local hospital by Charleston County EMS An "extensive" manhunt did not locate the suspect and was suspended shortly before midnight SPD said the suspect is believed to be a white male with a medium build and possibly in his mid-40s with brown/"blondish" hair He is considered to be armed and dangerous and the public should not make any attempts to contact him SPD added that there "is no reason to believe" that Pine Forest Country Club's residents are in danger and asked that anyone with surveillance footage between 3-6 p.m on Sunday contact them immediately at 843-875-1650 Share on FacebookShare on X (formerly Twitter)Share on whether to grant bond Anthony DeLustro was 64 when he was arrested in April 2024 and charged with the March 20 shooting death of 39-year-old Michael O’Neal of North Carolina The shooting happened after a fight escalated between DeLustro and O’Neal in the parking lot of the North Main Street Chick-fil-A in Summerville O’Neal was shot in his right arm and the bullet traveled to his chest Berkeley County Coroner Darnell Hartwell said DeLustro asked to be granted bond in front of a new judge after being denied bond by a different judge last year Judge Roger Young heard heard arguments from DeLustro’s lawyers that their client’s health circumstances have changed since July of 2024 His lawyers say that’s because he had an ankle fracture since being incarcerated and that a doctor recently ordered it may need reconstruction surgery His lawyers say he has respiratory issues stemming from his service at ground zero with the New York City Police Department during 9/11 that still cause problems and he missed his yearly checkup on that because of being in jail Most recently they say a hamstring issue came up that might require an MRI and all these appointments are putting a strain on the jail staff They also said they are trying to get him to a specialist for a head injury but no one will see him because he is an inmate Young sighed looking over paperwork and responded “Well Ninth Circuit Solicitor Scarlett Wilson argued against DeLustro getting bond She said it seems he’s getting transported to the care he needs noting the defense said deputies have driven him more than 1,000 miles for appointments She also said some of these conditions were already known during his summer bond hearing when another judge already ruled DeLustro should stay behind bars She also expressed a continued concern that DeLustro would be a threat to the public Wilson noted that his psychological evaluation showed PTSD and this case is compiling more trauma to that analysis O’Neal’s family appeared at the bond hearing His sister spoke to the judge on behalf of the family She told the judge while they appreciate the efforts of everyone on 9/11 we still believe in the power of a fair and serving police department and officers who serve with dignity and grace just as Michael’s father did and his grandfather as well,” she said “We also believe in the State of South Carolina the Berkeley County Courts and you your honor that you will make a fair and just decision to protect this community and keep Mr Young asked the lawyers to file all documents showing medical changes since the last hearing by the end of the week he said he will review the information and reach a decision after giving everything fair consideration He did not indicate when to expect that decision The South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division provided warrants in the shooting’s aftermath which detailed the investigation that resulted in murder charges and Those warrants recount witness testimony in which DeLustro is described to investigators as “the primary aggressor.” DeLustro and O’Neal reportedly got out of their vehicles and DeLustro asked him if he wanted to “do this” several times and used a slur to refer to O’Neal The two escalated to a physical fight as witnesses attempted to separate the two DeLustro told O’Neal he was under arrest and flashed his Summerville Police Department credentials DeLustro’s handgun also fell out of its holster onto the ground behind his vehicle at some point A witness attempting to restrain DeLustro said he heard the now-ex-officer tell O’Neal that ran behind his car to retrieve the gun that fell from the holster and advanced on O’Neal’s car DeLustro reportedly told investigators that he knew the victim was trying to leave and that he was intentionally trying to stop him from doing so acknowledging that he “never saw the victim with a firearm or any other weapon and that the victim never threatened the use of any sort of weapon,” according to warrants DeLustro said he entered the victim’s car to stop him from leaving Investigators said DeLustro got into the passenger seat and fired the single shot from his gun DeLustro was placed on administrative leave and was terminated once SLED filed charges Ninth Circuit Solicitor Scarlett Wilson said witnesses called DeLustro “out of control,” saying his activities during the incident proved he poses a threat to the public At his first bond hearing in April DeLustro stated in court that he spent his whole life dedicated to public service noted his time spent at Ground Zero following the Sept the loss of his daughter and subsequent assignment of custody to him and his wife over his grandchildren and asked the judge to show him mercy DeLustro said he “never had one substantiated complaint in the 35 years” he had worked in law enforcement The magistrate judge did not have the power to grant DeLustro bond because of the nature of the charges and it was automatically denied Summerville Police Chief Douglas Wright released a statement immediately after the shooting: On behalf of the Summerville Police Department we offer our thoughts and prayers to the O’Neal family for the tragic loss of their loved one I spoke with Michael’s parents and offered my sincere condolences Our police officer was treated and released after suffering non-life-threatening injuries Our deepest prayers are with him and his family during this difficult time This event was a struggle for all who were involved I immediately requested outside assistance from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division [SLED] to lead the investigation of this incident as they are an impartial and independent agency I want to remind everyone that this procedure takes time Don’t hesitate to get in touch with SLED with further inquiries (WCIV) — The Dorchester County Sheriff's Office made three arrests following a tip-off about suspected illegal activity at a
