Ohio's 2025 primary election takes place May 6 — and every Buckeye State precinct is voting because of the statewide Issue 2
that might be the only ballot question a voter will have to consider
But a couple of party primary races and a handful of levies are up for a vote across the area
Here's what you need to know about the primary:
Absentee ballots were required to be postmarked by Monday
Ohio voters will decide on Issue 2, a $2.5 billion bond issue for infrastructure improvements. The bond would fund projects related to roads, bridges, water systems, and waste disposal over 10 years, according to the Columbus Dispatch. Issue 2 is unrelated to the proposed $600 million in bonds for a new Cleveland Browns stadium
There is no Issue 1 on the ballot due to a change in Ohio law to no longer repeat issue numbers
Here's the ballot language on Issue 2 from the Ohio Secretary of State:
Issue 18 affects communities served by the Akron-Summit County Public Library system
They'll decide whether to issue $160 million in bonds — to be repaid over a 20-year period — to acquire sites and build and upgrade facilities
The measure contains a property tax levy that would amount to $35 annually for each $100,000 of appraised value
Issue 19 affects the Barberton Public Library District (in addition to the city
the district includes some precincts in Akron
Norton and Coventry Twp.) and is a renewal of a five-year
1.95 mill tax for Barberton Public Library
That's $39 annually for each $100,000 of appraised property value
ready the Summit County Board of Elections' ballot language below:
Two Akron City Council races will determine the voters' choice to replace members who stepped down in 2024. Sam DeShazior was the council's interim choice to replace Nancy Holland in Ward 1. He's running to keep the seat in a Democratic primary that also includes Emily Durway and Fran Wilson
There are no Republican candidates registered
but the winner of this race will face independent challenger Acacia Reynolds
whom the Summit County Board of Elections confirmed filed by the 4 p.m
Akron City Council named Bruce Bolden as the interim Ward 8 replacement for James Hardy after his exit in 2024
Bolden faces a challenge in the Democratic primary from N.J
There are no Republican candidates certified
and no other potential hurdles for the primary winner in November since a Summit County Board of Elections release did not include any Ward 8 independent challengers filing by the 4 p.m
Who's running in the Tallmadge City Council at-large race?Four Democratic candidates are vying to chosen for three City Council at-large slots that the party can field on the November ballot
Jessica Epstein currently holds one of the seats; others running are Lindsay Cammel Halm
The primary winners will join a general election race that includes GOP incumbents Christine Cipa and Nicholas Rubino as well as Republican Jena Stasik
For a closer look at these measures and school levies from districts based in neighboring counties that dip into Summit

AEW star Darby Allin is currently in the midst of climbing Mount Everest, the tallest mountain in the world. Not content with just reaching the peak, the wrestler brought along a skateboard, and a recent post on Instagram shows Allin landing an iconic skateboard trick within sight of the summit
A post shared by DARBY ALLIN (@darbyallin)
the usually cleanshaven Allin can be seen sporting a beard as he lands a kickflip at Everest Camp 2
which rests just 8,000 feet beneath the mountain's summit
Using a digital watch to determine the elevation
Allin claimed that he had broken the world record for the highest kickflip in history at 20,958 feet above sea level
Allin began his trek early last month, and the trip is expected to last into June. Based on updates posted online since the journey began, Allin seems to be staying healthy and making good progress as he summits Everest. The trip had been something the wrestler discussed publicly for years
and he was at one point scheduled to climb the mountain in 2024
Those plans had to be postponed due to an injury to his foot
Discussing his motivation for tackling Everest in an interview last year, Allin indicated that he wanted to remind himself that he was capable of whatever he puts his mind toward
The wrestler was thankful that AEW was allowing him to attempt such a feat in the middle of his contract
and he shared his belief that the experience will be a "humbling" one for him

For those looking forward to warmer weather
this upcoming week is not your week.
Mountains in Summit and Grand counties could get as much as a foot of snow by next weekend
National Weather Service forecaster Bob Kleyla said this spring weather system will kick off Sunday night just after sunset with scattered showers and thunderstorms.
things will pick back Monday afternoon with sporadic precipitation into Monday night
the system could start delivering what Kleya described as “heavy” snow to some High Country mountains
Loveland Ski Area and Winter Park Resort will get the bulk of the snow from this system
Winter Park could see an inch of snow on Monday and 6 inches on both Tuesday and Wednesday
While the base of Winter Park closed on April 27
the Mary Jane and Parsenn Bowl areas are still open
which has its closing day celebrations May 11
is anticipated to get 11 inches by Thursday morning
The ski area is expected to get 2 inches of snow on Monday
5 inches of snow on Tuesday and 4 inches on Wednesday
which looks to stay open throughout May and into June
is expected to get 2 inches of snow on Monday and 5 inches each on Tuesday and Wednesday
is anticipated to get 2 inches of snow on both Monday and Tuesday
an inch on Wednesday and another one on Thursday
Copper Mountain also has a planned closing day of May 11
OpenSnow’s forecast shows it could get an inch of snow Monday
“It’s definitely going be a heavier
wet snow … A lot of it (falling below 9,500 feet) will probably melt on pavement
The biggest travel headaches will probably be above 10,000 feet on the higher passes,” he said
He added cold temperatures slated for Tuesday and Wednesday could keep the snow around for a bit on the slopes
but temperatures after that rise to the 30s and 40s
Kleyla said the National Weather Service forecasting model only goes 10 days
but it’s likely this round of substantial snow will be the last Summit and Grand counties see before summer
He said while there have been Memorial Day snow events in the past
the likelihood of snow continues to diminish once May hits
Summit Daily is embarking on a multiyear project to digitize its archives going back to 1989 and make them available to the public in partnership with the Colorado Historic Newspapers Collection
The full project is expected to cost about $165,000
All donations made in 2023 will go directly toward this project
The GATE Summit will build on progress in the sector with the overall goal of collaboration within and between sectors and partners to achieve a consensus-driven Global roadmap for priority investment and action to accelerate equitable access to assistive technology.
The WHO and UNICEF Global report on assistive technology identifies that 2.5 billion people globally need assistive technology
Equitable access to assistive technology enables better health outcomes
and facilitates collective and inclusive achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
there is significant global inequity of access to quality
affordable assistive products and services needed to ensure they match a person’s needs
Household surveys conducted for the Global report found that in some low-income countries, as few as 3% of people have the assistive products they need; and more than 67% of people accessed their products through shops through out-of-pocket payments
The report also highlights the surge in need during the humanitarian crisis
magnified by a lack of preparedness to respond.
The 2018 World Health Assembly Resolution (71.8) on assistive technology
followed by the Global report in 2022 and other global initiatives
has increased awareness and interest in assistive technology as a key issue within health
Progress has been made towards closing the gaps in access
including increasingly comprehensive global guidance and country-level actions
in particular for low- and middle-income countries
remains slow in contrast to the growing need
There also remains a lack of understanding amongst decision-makers and advocates on how to achieve effective access for diverse groups of service users across varied contexts and on the potential of emerging opportunities such as digital health technology.
Interpretation for GATE Summit Plenary: Arabic
GATE Summit 2025 will draw together government representatives; WHO
and other UN Agency personnel; assistive technology service user advocates and their representative bodies including organizations of persons with disabilities
and others; assistive technology service providers and their representative associations; researchers; educators; development partners; donors; and innovators
In-person attendance will be through invitation only
Remote participation will be open to all through approved registration

The Missouri Valley Football Conference will undergo a new governance and operating structure
approved by the MVFC President’s Council
The football-only league will be under a joint management model between the Missouri Valley Conference and the Summit League
creating a new governance and operating structure for the single-sport conference
HERO Sports first reported this enhanced MVFC-Summit League partnership last month
Jeff Jackson has been named the next MVFC Commissioner
and Josh Fenton will be the Executive Advisor
Jackson has served as Commissioner of the MVC since 2021
He will assume his duties as MVFC Commissioner on July 1
Fenton has served as The Summit League’s Commissioner since 2023
Current MVFC commissioner Patty Viverito is set to retire on June 30
and South Dakota State play their other sports in the Summit League
And Youngstown State is in the Horizon League
“I eagerly anticipate working with the MVFC Presidents Council
and the Athletic Directors of the MVFC,” Jackson said
“This partnership will foster a mutually beneficial relationship between our two conferences
ensuring the continued success of the MVFC while establishing a stable framework for our membership
Our collective efforts will be instrumental in delivering an exceptional experience for student-athletes.” “The Summit League and all its member institutions are excited for this new partnership with the Missouri Valley Conference to assist in the operations of the best FCS Football conference across the country,” Fenton said
“I look forward to working with Commissioner Jackson and his team to advance the interests of our football programs
while also continuing to build a strong Summit League.”
“This restructuring ensures the continued success and stability of the MVFC,” UND President Andy Armacost
who is currently serving as the MVFC President’s Chair
“By streamlining our management and enhancing collaboration among member institutions across three conferences – the Summit League
and the Horizon League – we are positioning ourselves for sustained growth and continued national prominence.”
the MVFC will remain an independent legal entity
distinct from its member institutions’ multisport conferences
The updated governance model includes a board of directors
The MVC and Summit League will play a role in administrative operations
as this is mostly behind-the-scenes changes to the day-to-day operations
But it could help in improving multimedia presence
The MVFC is also looking at doing an in-person media day this summer
And the partnership could play a huge role in realignment
The new partnership puts the Summit League in a position of power in adding new members, either from Utah or Texas
as new members would automatically have a spot in the MVFC

industry leaders and data privacy leaders from across the globe convened in Washington
for the 2025 International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) Global Privacy Summit
we outline key themes and takeaways from the event
Cross-Regulator Coordination Is Increasing
United Kingdom and United States emphasized growing cross-sector and cross-jurisdiction collaboration on data privacy and artificial intelligence (AI) regulation
Panels throughout the summit highlighted both formal and informal collaboration efforts
the fragmented approach to regulation is likely to continue
but regulators are increasingly communicating with each other on shared priorities
2. US State Regulators Are Sharpening Their Focus
organizations must adapt their compliance programs to meet nuanced requirements
Representatives from the CPPA and Connecticut
Colorado and Oregon state AG offices offered insights into regulator priorities for the coming year and all stressed that regulatory inquiries often stem from consumer complaints
Data privacy compliance documentation should be prepared with an external audience in mind and be clear
Proactive engagement with regulators is essential — not only for compliance but to minimize risk during investigations
noted that collaborative communication from the beginning of an investigation can provide the necessary context for regulators and thus help mitigate scrutiny
Legal Certainty Is Essential for Innovation
regulators emphasized that ongoing legal uncertainty is one of the biggest obstacles to innovation in data privacy and AI
They called on lawmakers to act to deliver urgently needed legislative frameworks that are clear and consistent
AI and Ad-Tech Regulatory Developments in Europe
regulators provided key updates on emerging AI laws and governance frameworks
Regulatory Developments Across the Asia-Pacific
Significant regulatory activity is underway across the Asia-Pacific (APAC)
particularly concerning data privacy and AI governance
Data privacy professionals highlighted the importance of tailoring compliance to local requirements
proactively updating localized incident response plans
and monitoring emerging laws and regulations
Australia amended its federal privacy law in December 2024
including to allow the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner to issue penalty notices
Japan also anticipates amending the Act on the Protection of Personal Information in 2025 to introduce administrative fines
CPPA and UK ICO Announce New Cooperation Pact
The CPPA announced a new agreement with the U.K
ICO to formalize existing collaboration between the offices in order to further foster joint research
the exchange of investigative techniques and shared strategies for addressing emerging data protection challenges
This move reflects the CPPA’s broader strategy to strengthen international and domestic alliances — building on similar agreements with South Korea’s Personal Information Protection Commission
France’s CNIL and the formation of the new U.S
As the CPPA continues expanding its regulatory reach and enforcement footprint
companies operating across jurisdictions should be prepared for more harmonized
coordinated enforcement and heightened compliance expectations
Organizations should consider working with outside counsel to:

relationships and raising quality beef — that’s the message the Gardiners brought to center stage at the recent Certified Angus Beef Foodservice Leaders Summit
of Gardiner Angus Ranch offered a boots-on-the-ground perspective for CAB specialists attending the annual event
designed to deliver resources that help train foodservice teams and serve consumers at a higher level
“Attendees at the CAB Foodservice Leaders Summit are our front-line sales force in the restaurant industry,” Lee said
“In a competitive beef market with high prices
it’s crucial we equip them with tools to overcome sales objectives by highlighting Certified Angus Beef’s quality merits
The father-son duo shared their story of serving up superior customer service and generations of resiliency
Nearly 150 years ago and with help from the Homestead Act
the Gardiners planted their operation’s roots in Ashland
with the fourth and fifth generations at the helm
the property has grown to be one of the most successful Angus seedstock ranches
the Gardiners’ success relies on their customers’ success
Whether it’s a commercial cow-calf operation
care and commitment stem from a dedication to the future
As consumer demand for the Certified Angus Beef brand increases
it also fuels the long-term sustainability of family businesses
“Every animal is connected to a human
and so we have to make sure those humans succeed
It’s no different in your business,” Mark said
is to make sure that our customers have an experience where they can raise their families
Cole emphasized the key to customer service is listening first
“Understand what your customer wants before trying to meet their need,” Cole said
explain what’s going to add value to their cattle and what’s going to help them be successful are really the kind of people we love to work with.”
But it’s not just business relationships that define their story — it’s how those relationships have been sustained through hardship
the Starbuck Fire scorched nearly 1 million acres of western Kansas
leaving questions about the cost and complexity of rebuilding
watched strangers eager to step up in their family’s time of need
our customers and people from all over the United States started bringing us resources and they kept coming and coming,” Mark said
reflecting how the industry’s giving spirit during devastation reminded him of the true gift in life.
“It made me thankful to be in the industry we’re in with everybody who cares so much,” he said
“It’s difficult to say that a massive tragedy is a blessing
Despite differences of both those on stage and in the crowd (or those in the pasture and those in chef coats)
all continuously work toward producing the best-tasting
“We’re partners in this business
We’re partners in this world together,” Mark said
in foodservice or a packer — you’ve got to be there
you’ve got to show up and you’ve got to be present.”
“We’re living in the greatest time in history and this is exciting
and we get the opportunity to do this,” Mark said
This same optimism can be found in event attendees’ enthusiasm and appreciation for the Gardiners’ perspective.
“CAB’s rich grass-roots history with Angus breeders is one we’re proud of
As a subsidiary of the American Angus Association
CAB is poised to build bridges from pasture to plate and create brand ambassadors who tell its story to consumers

Casey Venturini joins Chris Murphy to preview the summit happening Tuesday
The Sherpa team fixing the route to the summit of Everest from the Nepal side has reached Camp 4 at nearly 8,000m on the South Col
we should see the first summits of the season later this week
“The plan is to reach the summit between May 8 and May 10,” Lakpa Sherpa of 8K Expeditions told ExplorersWeb
Multimodel forecasts show partly cloudy weather on Everest with some light snow flurries and pretty low winds
Forecasts for the summit of Everest over the next days by Meteoexploration.com
This opens an interesting dilemma for expedition leaders about the best strategy
Many climbers are ready to go for the summit after acclimatizing with a couple of nights at Camp 2 and a day trip to Camp 3
like the Indian Army expedition led by Kami Rita Sherpa
on his way to summit Everest for a record 31 times
Climbers with the huge Indian Army team march toward Camp 2
the outfitters still need to supply Camp 4
This involves a large number of Sherpas carrying tents
and oxygen canisters up the Lhotse Face from 6,500m
they traverse the Yellow Band and the Geneva Spur to Camp 4 (7,950m)
If some clients hope to follow the rope fixers to the summit in the next three days
How staggered the summit pushes are will determine the size of the first summit wave and how crowded the route becomes

Marketers have now accepted that artificial intelligence is as much a basic need as electricity
and are negotiating the tension of how much to delegate
working through emerging ethical and operational issues.
AI is now “table stakes” for marketing organizations
is forcing marketers into a more philosophical discussion of where the technology can help
according to speakers at the Brand Innovators AI & Marketing Summit.
“You have a business strategy and AI supports that strategy.” He compared the rush into AI with previous mobile and internet rushes and warned the technology needs to be thought through in the context of each enterprise’s goals.
digital and direct-to-consumer marketing and media strategy at Church & Dwight
The rise of AI has led marketers into me-too thinking
where every platform and every vendor boasts that they are using AI
often without perfecting the thinking or quality behind it
digital and direct-to-consumer marketing and media strategy at CPG company Church & Dwight.
A business that believes merely using AI is a differentiator is about as outdated as one that believes electrical power serves that purpose
The biggest opportunities and threats emerging from AI don’t necessarily come from making today’s businesses more effective
the former Chief Strategist of Publicis Groupe
But many marketers are rethinking operations in the wake of AI’s pervasiveness
director of marketing excellence & brand building
at Bayer noted the pharma company had missed first-mover advantages in previous marketing evolutions
“We realized that we need to get ahead of it
because if we don’t we’re going to be so far behind.”
whether it’s content creation or brand strategy and positioning
This has allowed the company to build content at a rapid speed
sometimes 400 to 500 pieces of content per day for some brands
far ahead of what it could do only a year ago
While still in the early phases of AI adoption
“We really have to trust the process,” said Nevoso.
consumers are faced with a slew of content
but its quality and impact are up for discussion
Sharma asked for a show of hands of how many people have seen so much AI-generated creative they can spot it on sight
said people are fed up with AI content.
“We’re all inundated with content,” said Bryce Adams
SVP of partnerships at the influencer marketing agency Open Influence.
“Copying and pasting the work of other brands is easier than ever,” said Julia Knight
This raises the bar for brands to make their work unique
and also increases the need for ethical oversight
The public-safety app is one of the largest investors of policy and fire radio content
so being truthful and ethical is important
The technology is increasing pressure on in-house creative teams to make better
more relevant content: “Not just more for more
The growth of agentic AI is forcing marketers to rethink the customer journey and how they engage consumers and focusing on those bots and chat agents
many speakers noted that search advertising volume is dropping sharply as AI agents take over many functions.
When marketers at pharma company Boehringer Ingelheim found out a few years ago that bots were involved in healthcare “we were appalled,” said Katherine Freeley
But the company has accepted that patient education based on searching and clicking on links “will be gone” as consumers increasingly use agents to enter their symptoms and ask about medical conditions
“There will be no world with link-based search soon,” said Freeley.
“We keep thinking we’re going to have agents as marketers
but me as a person is also going to have an agent,” said Tobaccowala
And agents will be connecting with each other
Parsing data at scale and speed can lead to a more predictive way of working.
global brand strategy & innovation at Mastercard
which has been using AI for over 10 years in fraud protection and other risk management tasks
has found a number of marketing uses for generative AI recently, said Cheryl Guerin
global brand strategy & innovation at the company
It created an insights engine to assist its 10-person research team
which had been overwhelmed with thousands of questions across the organization
it can give insights in real time about questions such as “How does Gen Z feel about sustainability?” and even generate presentation slides
By enabling this across the marketing organization
it has relieved the team and stopped a lot of duplicative research
She also noted MasterCard created a paid-media tool to monitor social media “micro trends” around passions such as e-sports and entertainment and connected it with media buying to respond with messages to consumers within 15 minutes
The tool can predict trends that can happen in coming weeks and have content ready to reach the right person with the right message
Many speakers noted the real promise of AI is not to create content at volume
but help marketers make choices between creative executions
“We’re building power tools for people who make creative content,” said John Elder
Co-founder & CEO of AI tech company Supergood.
Marketers are also reimagining social listening with AI
and now brands can be smarter about using it
Brands can test content and understand better the next steps available
a valuable help when dealing with user-generated content
“That tool set and that knowledge will enable us to make better bets,” he said
he noted Snapchat is building a tool that can boost content if someone is talking about a brand online
whether they are a signed influencer or not.
“I feel we’re like accountants that just started using Excel in the early 80’s,” said Elder, but added
“it’s really just a tool that helps you make things faster.”
especially in a highly-regulated industry such as financial services
Bank worked with Supergood on an AI-assisted research project that was able to identify quickly how its heritage brand was being undervalued and helped unlock value of its assets
“Having a data strategy is critical,” said Elder
“It’s just improving the inputs to your decision-making abilities.”
Bank’s brand team validate their insights quickly and “allows us to punch above our weight” by moving forward fast with confidence
That gives the company an early-mover advantage “so you can move with the market in real time.”
Marketers’ biggest AI challenge right now is trying to keep up
“It feels like every three weeks there is a new AI tool,” said Knight.
She recommended marketers stay curious about AI development
professionals need to give up trying to stay ahead of it
and just maintain flexibility so they can adapt to new tools and uses
she said: “You have to start preparing yourself for what the future is going to be.”

Instructor Ally Love recently provided more context behind Peloton’s global instructor summits in a class pre-show
Peloton typically holds a global instructor summit each year
they held them as a “Global” instructor summit – with all instructors from around the world flying in together
they have had them split between the PSNY teams and the PSL teams – with one in New York
a handful of instructors do end up attending both
These meetups are one of the only times each year that the majority of instructors have the opportunity to be together in-person
Ally provided some insight into the gatherings and the goals behind them
She described the summits as an “opportunity to reconnect” and “recommit to our craft
Ally talked about the importance of finding joy and novelty when approaching each class
even for the instructors who have been with Peloton for years
Ally hopes that members notice a difference in how instructors show up following each global instructor summit
The goal is to reignite instructors’ passion and love for their jobs
which then ideally translates to the classes they teach and how they engage with members and the larger Peloton community
Back in 2022 Ally was promoted to “Global Lead of Instructor Strategic Initiatives,” and Peloton’s global instructor summits fall under her purview
she revealed that her title has since changed to Vice President of Instructor Strategy and Development
You can watch the full video of Ally’s pre-show via the @LoveSquadPeloton Instagram page
Peloton Studios New York (PSNY) held their summit last month, and Peloton Studios London (PSL) held their summit the next week. These took place on days the studios is closed with on live classes
Numerous instructors shared content and behind-the-scenes peeks throughout the gatherings
One of the keynote speakers at the PSNY summit was Sahil Bloom, a writer, content creator, and entrepreneur. Adrian Williams shared a group photo of the instructors with Sahil
Both Robin Arzon & Ally Love attended the Peloton Studios London summit
where Fearne Cotton was the keynote speaker for that team
We have periodically shared about Global Instructor Summits in the past, first in 2022.

businesses from Douglas County and beyond gathered to explore new strategies and share ideas for supporting families and providing childcare opportunity benefits at the 2025 Family Friendly Employer Summit
According to Douglas Education Service District Early Learning Program Facilitator Robin Van Winkle
the main goal of the event was to emphasize the benefits of building a family friendly work structure to employers throughout the county
“When employers support those working parents
they see better outcomes in terms of their (ability to) attract a great workforce
they’re able to retain a great workforce and then it also helps our economic development as well as the community overall.”
served as an opportunity for businesses and childcare providers to network
learn from one another and hear from experts on integrating family support into a business model
the event brought in two featured speakers
the president and CEO of the Texas-based engineering and manufacturing corporation SigmaPro
the national director of the family-friendly policy networking organization Best Place for Working Parents
Allen shared the story of how her company successfully integrated a functioning childcare facility into their company to help support employees with young children during COVID
Allen offered several pieces of advice to the audience for integrating childcare
such as not trying to address every need for employees at once and not being afraid of the possibility of pushback
Allen said maintaining empathy for an employee’s needs was a major part of moving the project forward
we wanted to stay positioned to make human centered decision making a priority,” Allen said
“It was really important for me to relate and to empathize with everyone.”
Allen shared that businesses shouldn’t underestimate the impact even the smallest of efforts can have for supporting employees with families
“That low-hanging fruit for you may be the easiest problem to solve
it may be the least expensive problem to solve
it may be the quickest problem to solve,” Allen said
Don’t sacrifice the 1% solution because you cant’ get a 100% solution in place.”
Funk’s speech took the audience beyond childcare and explored other strategies that businesses can use to support employees with families in ways that help retain workers and boost their productivity
Even if employers are not able to provide childcare directly
there are more affordable options for supporting those workers
“I think it’s important for employers to understand that childcare really isn’t the only path,” Funk said
there’s a lot of low and no-cost solutions that are available
some sort of hybrid...getting schedules that are three weeks in advance rather than the week of can really help caregivers put the child care needs in place for them that they feel safe and secure about
overall reducing their stress both at home and at work but then also making them a more reliable employee.”
The spotlight was also provided to a number of childcare providers local to Douglas County who shared stories and advice relating to the successes and obstacles of operating rural childcare facilities
the executive director of Cobb Children’s Learning Center
said one piece of advice she had for organizations stepping into childcare is to have a thorough understanding of the needs of families in a particular community
“I think being a community partner is probably the most essential to make sure that you are sustainable
to be honest,” Bent said.” Know what the community needs
know what the families need and then try to match it as best as possible as a business.”
owner of Wildflower Preschool and Child Care
relating them to the needs of the community she serves
a lot of our families are facing geographic isolation and socioeconomic challenges with being able to access and afford childcare,” Ruley said
“I think it’s really important that we strategize and we think outside the box on how we can access funding to help support the infrastructure

One of the sturdiest threads tying Colorado’s High Country communities together is a decades-long sentiment held by many locals that affording to live in the communities they work in is a growing struggle
hundreds of millions of dollars have been poured into the problem
and affordability issues continue to fuel the relocation of locals who might be considered middle class elsewhere
School districts have even found themselves participating in the housing game to keep their teachers around. For instance, Summit School District and Breckenridge are considering a deal where district employees will have first dibs on some units in a neighborhood being planned by the town
High Country housing leaders discussed the affordability woes, as well as the initiatives being worked on to provide workforce housing, at the Northwest Colorado Council of Governments Regional Economic Summit on May 1. During the summit
officials opted to avoid the term “affordable” and instead used the term “workforce” housing
The town of Vail’s director of housing Jason Dietz said
the word “affordable” is used less and less because its definition is subjective
a measure of affordability is a person putting 30% of their income toward housing expenses.
it’s a supply side issue where there’s not enough housing for the workforce or the low income
There’s primarily enough housing for the higher income,” he said
Entities in the Roaring Fork and Colorado River Valleys, including Pitkin and Eagle counties’ governments, joined municipal governments like those in the cities of Glenwood Springs and Aspen to form a tax-exempt nonprofit in 2022. The intent of the nonprofit, called the Western Mountain Regional Housing Coalition
was to increase accessibility to housing for locals
according to the nonprofit’s website
Executive director April Long shed light on the shifting housing landscape the organization is working with that makes using the term “affordable” tough
these communities that used to be the bedroom communities for Aspen and Snowmass
are now incredibly out of reach for local income earners,” she said
She said if a local family of four was looking for a $500,000 house in the area
they wouldn’t be able to find one.
There’s nothing there,” she said
“(Let’s say a local couple) probably both work in the medical industry
earning $300,000- $400,000 a year (they still) can’t afford a home in this area.”
around 40% of residents in the region her nonprofit represents were cost burdened
and now that number has grown so rapidly they can’t “gather the data quick enough to keep up with how fast it’s growing.”
The town of Basalt’s planning director Michelle Bonfils Thibeault said her community
She said the town has deed-restricted housing for only around 10% of its population
and many of those deed restrictions are a result of stipulations baked into development agreements for market-rate housing
Long said the High Country is up against limited buildable land and “the free-market housing being gobbled up by outside income earners,” meaning the introduction of more outside investment as opposed to local investment
She said one of the most sustainable paths forward to remedy the area’s housing issues are public/private partnerships
“If you want to solve the affordable housing problem by building it out yourself and not allowing new growth
then you need to come up with a lot of money and a lot of land,” she said
Housing officials said they have taken to multi-pronged approaches when it comes to providing solutions to the housing problem
including building workforce housing and deploying mechanisms on existing housing units to ensure some level of attainability.
Dietz said the town of Vail is currently working on bringing around 600 units geared toward the workforce. He said the town also has programs that place deed restrictions on market-rate units to make them more affordable
The town also now has a program where businesses can purchase these units for their employees
He said he thinks building workforce housing will need to remain a key solution
Eagle County Housing Department Outreach Coordinator Matt Andrews said his organization
invested around $13 million into a program flipping market-rate homes into deed-restricted ones since its creation in 2021
he said his department is currently building dozens of workforce housing units and has program to aid in rent and incentives the usage of accessory dwelling units as long-term rentals
The Western Mountain Regional Housing Coalition places focus on what its website calls “development neutral programs,” or those that do not require the purchase of land or the constitution of new units and uses a similar deed restriction model to Eagle County
Summit County and many of its municipalities have very similar deed-restricted programs that flip market-rate housing into workforce housing. The county’s housing authority also saw a record year for a down payment assistance program in 2024.

As the spring sports season is coming to a close
the Summit High School baseball team is on the prowl for as many wins as it can get.
After going into spring break with a record of 11-4
Summit resumed its regular season slate of games with a game in Breckenridge on Wednesday
Serving as Summit’s senior recognition night game
Summit wanted to secure its 12th win of the season
The Glenwood Springs Demons began the game with two runs in the first to take an early lead
Summit managed to take the lead in its half of the third
The Tigers scored three runs throughout the course of the inning to lead 3-2 going into the fourth.
Glenwood Springs went on to tie the game in the top of the fifth
leading to a nail biter in the game’s final two innings
The two teams went scoreless in the sixth inning before Glenwood Springs brought in a run to win the game
The loss was a little disheartening to Summit
but the team soon returned to the diamond for a home doubleheader against fellow 4A Western Slope league opponent — Eagle Valley High School — on Saturday
With the turf field at Kingdom Park in Breckenridge still warming up under the mid-morning sun
Summit took to the infield and outfield for the top of the first inning.
Summit senior pitcher Austin Koll and the Summit defense made quick work of the top half of the inning
retiring the first three batters who stepped up to the plate
After Summit failed to record a hit at its first two at bats
junior Jojo Gambino sliced a ball along the first-base line
The hit skirted right past Eagle Valley’s first baseman and all the way to the fence in right field
Gambino sprinted to third base for the triple
Junior Hogan Tobias then singled on a line drive to center field to bring in Gambino for the first run of the game.
Summit struggled on the mound in the top of the second
Koll hit the first two batters he faced in the second frame
Summit worked hard to retire the inning before Eagle Valley could put points on the board
The Summit infield caught an Eagle Valley baserunner in a pickle between first and second base
The Tigers were eventually able to record the out
but not before an Eagle Valley Devils’ runner scored
Summit then recorded two more outs to retire the inning
the Tigers got their bats going in their half of the second
Senior Lucas Comcowich singled on a line drive to center before sophomore Hunter Plummer was hit by a pitch
Koll singled on a bunt to completely load up the bases
Junior Matty Misch then hit a ground ball to second base that resulted in Koll being called out
but a lack of focus from the Eagle Valley infield put two runners across the plate.
Comcowich and Plummer both scored to give Summit a 3-1 lead to begin the third inning.
Eagle Valley cut into its deficit in the fourth
Junior Xander DeHerrera sent a deep hit to center field which brought in Colter Blakey
The Summit defense had a huge top of the fifth inning
Summit successfully secured a third out and maintained its 3-2 lead.
Summit put the game away in the bottom of the fifth inning
With senior Gus Bradford and junior Sam Eldredge on base
Tobias hit a line drive double to right field
Summit secured its second league win of the day and sixth of the season in the tail end of its doubleheader against Eagle Valley
Summit scored two runs in the fourth to really get things going
The Tigers stayed hot in the batter’s box after that
producing two runs in the fifth inning and five in the sixth inning
that featured the most fireworks for Summit
Eldredge fired off a jaw-dropping grand slam home run en-route to a six-run seventh inning
“It is huge for us,” Eldredge said of the wins
“It kept our conference championship hopes alive and it kept us in a good spot to hopefully get a good seed in the playoffs
We have five more games next week and those are all huge too
We are hoping to win out in the conference and (take) the banner for the first time in a while.”
Summit is now 13-5 overall and 6-2 in league play
Summit will now prepare for two doubleheaders on the road
The Tigers will face Middle Park in Granby on Tuesday
before taking on Steamboat Springs on Friday
Summit will close out the regular season with a final home game against Longmont on Saturday
May 10.The game is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m
