Cowley College Sumner Campus held its robotics competition on April 23-24
Sumner Newscow report — Cowley College hosted another successful Sumner County Robotics Competition at its Sumner Campus on April 23–24
welcoming enthusiastic student teams from across the region for two days of robotics innovation
The Basic Competition
This non-coding event focused on accessibility and fun
giving students of all academic backgrounds the chance to explore robotics through team-based challenges
Activities ranged from drone knockdowns and maze navigation to robot mini golf and creative challenges like the “Make Van Gogh Happy” art station
Students also engaged in thrilling contests such as Sumo Dash
the Advanced Competition focused on coding and engineering
Sixteen teams from six schools participated
These students tested their programming and problem-solving skills through a variety of events
programming Sphero robots through obstacle courses
and completing precise navigation tasks using block and text coding
challenged teams to decorate their robots using artistic creativity
then prove the decorations didn’t interfere with robot function
Robots had to perform a task decked out in their best outfits
with the winning team’s robot even dancing to a song
plastic duck trophy captured the most excitement
a new humorous trophy will be introduced for this special category
“This event allowed Cowley and our sponsors to bring the excitement of robotics to middle school students
featuring a non-coding event on Wednesday and a coding event on Thursday,” said David Hays

“We are entering an age where AI and automation will replace many positions and impact many aspects of our careers at all levels
Those who do not embrace this new future will be at a significant disadvantage
Judging by the looks on the students’ faces
we achieved our goal of getting them excited about technology — the critical first step.”

The move to place the driver on admin leave is currently pending the outcome of the investigation into the crash
The Tennessee Highway Patrol and the district confirmed several Westmoreland students were injured in the bus crash on Rock Hollow Road
THP reports that the bus was traveling on the road when the driver allegedly lost control

A total of 19 Westmoreland middle and high schoolers were on the bus at the time of the crash

(WTVF) — A Sumner County Schools bus has crashed into a dry creek bed
according to authorities with the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP)
The school district said 19 students from Westmoreland Middle and High School were aboard when this happened on Rock House Hollow Road
while 14 students were released to their parents
"We are working with the Sumner County Sheriff’s Office and Tennessee Highway Patrol to determine the cause of the accident," the school district said
THP said the preliminary information shows the bus rolled onto its side into the creek

the bus driver was traveling on the right side of the road when she struck a bridge and overturned the bus
The total number of students that visited the hospital after sustaining injuries from the crash is now up to 6
(WZTV) - A serious crash involving a Sumner County school bus led to multiple minor injuries
According to Smokey Barn News
the incident happened on Rock House Hollow Road near Bransford and Westmoreland
the school bus veered into a creek and flipped onto its side with a group of 19 Westmoreland and Bethpage Middle and High School students inside
Initial reports from authorities claimed there were multiple injuries at the scene and at least one person was entrapped
Witnesses at the scene say some children inside the bus had visible injuries
it was determined that some students sustained minor injuries while five other students were taken to the hospital
Sumner County Schools has given FOX 17 News the following statement regarding the crash:
Bus 612 slid off the road and overturned into a dry creek bed on Rock House Hollow Road
Nineteen students from Westmoreland Middle and High School were on the bus
Five students were transported by EMS for further assessment
Fourteen students were released to their parents
We are working with the Sumner County Sheriff’s Office and Tennessee Highway Patrol to determine the cause of the accident."

Sumner County Schools spokesperson Jeremy Johnson said via email that six students were taken to a local hospital by Emergency Medical Services while 13 students were released to their parents
was carrying 19 students from Westmoreland Middle and High Schools when it slid off the road and overturned into the dry creed bed on April 28
A highway patrol report said the bus was traveling North on Rock House Hollow Road when it went off the right side of the road
A spokesperson with the highway patrol said the student injuries did not appear to be life-threatening when reached for comment
All of the students were off the bus and accounted for as the highway patrol and Sumner County Sheriff's Office investigates the cause of the crash

GILMAN — The East Marshall Community School District Board of Education has selected Dr
Kevin Seney as the next district superintendent pending board approval
according to a press release issued Monday
Seney is the current superintendent of the Sumner-Fredericksburg Community School District
where the release said he has “aligned building goals
and evaluation metrics with the board’s mission
and values” while also leading “the development of a strategic plan that has given the district direction related to academic excellence
“I am honored and grateful to join the East Marshall CSD team as superintendent,” Seney said
“I look forward to building strong relationships with staff
and the community as we work together to support student success
It was very evident during the interview process that there is a lot of community pride in the school district
a strong desire to build on their strengths
and I’m very excited to be a part of that moving forward.”
Prior to his time at Sumner-Fredericksburg
Seney was principal of Grinnell High School
and he also served as principal and activities director at Chariton High School
he has experience as an associate principal and athletic coach
He began his career in education as a teacher in the Seymour Community School District
a master’s degree in educational leadership
and an educational specialist master’s degree
He also earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Luther College
Seney brings a strong record of leadership and a clear commitment to student achievement to our school district community,” East Marshall Board President Lisa Meling said
“We are confident he will be an excellent fit for our district and will help guide our students and schools toward a bright future
We look forward to the impact he will make as he takes on this critical leadership role.”
Board members worked with Grundmeyer Leader Services to conduct the search
The board received 12 applications for the position
and final interviews were conducted with four candidates on April 2
Seney will officially begin leading East Marshall CSD as the superintendent effective July 1
