the National Weather Service issued an updated flash flood warning in effect until Saturday at 12:15 a.m
Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area
Between 2 and 5 inches of rain have fallen
Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly," says the weather service
"Flash flooding of small creeks and streams
streets and underpasses as well as other poor drainage and low-lying areas."
Locations impacted by the warning include Demopolis
don't drown when encountering flooded roads
Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding
Please report observed flooding to local emergency services or law enforcement and request they pass this information to the National Weather Service when you can do so safely."
A flash flood warning is issued when a flash flood is imminent or occurring
A flash flood is a sudden violent flood that can take from minutes to hours to develop
It is even possible to experience a flash flood in areas not immediately receiving rain
A flood warning is issued when flooding is imminent or occurring
A flood advisory is released when flooding is not expected to reach a severity level necessitating a warning
it can still cause considerable inconvenience and
potentially lead to situations that threaten life and/or property
A flood watch is issued when conditions are favorable for flooding
In flood-prone regions or while camping in low-lying areas
understanding and following the weather service flood safety guidelines can be a lifesaver:
If you reside in a flood-prone region or are camping in low-lying terrain
the first step to safety is relocating to higher ground
When local authorities issue an evacuation order
This reduces the risk of electrical hazards during flooding
Steer clear of flooded basements and submerged areas:
Steer clear of basements or rooms where water has submerged electrical outlets or cords
Avoid any water that may be charged with electricity
Even just 6 inches of swiftly moving water can forcefully knock you off your feet
In the event you become trapped by moving water
make your way to the highest point available and contact emergency services by calling 911
particularly in areas that are low-lying or prone to floods
It is crucial to never drive through water on the road
as little as 12 inches of fast-flowing water can carry away most vehicles
Stay informed and follow these tips from the weather service to ensure safety during heavy rainfall:
Avoid parking or walking in close proximity to culverts or drainage ditches
as the swiftly moving water during heavy rain can potentially carry you away
Use the two-second rule to maintain a safe distance from the car in front of you and allow an extra two seconds in heavy rain
Ease off the gas pedal gradually and avoid abrupt braking to prevent skidding
Stick to the middle lanes to minimize the risk of hydroplaning
Outer lanes are more prone to accumulating water
Enhance your visibility in heavy rain by activating your headlights
Be particularly vigilant for vehicles in blind spots
The first half-hour of rain is when roads are slickest due to a mix of rain
Exercise heightened caution during this period
Large trucks and buses can reduce your visibility with tire spray
Avoid tailgating and pass them swiftly and safely
these precautions can make a significant difference in ensuring your safety on the road
Remember to stay informed about weather conditions and heed guidance from local authorities for a secure journey

(WIS) - Three men have been indicted following an investigation into a money laundering operation
The indictment was announced on Thursday by acting United States Attorney Brook B
“When we target those who launder drug money
we strike at the very heart of these organizations,” said Andrews
Officials said this case has ties to Charleston
Andrews said the defendants operated primarily in Sumter County
The three men, Nasir Ullah, Naim Ullah
who resides in Georgia are accused of laundering over $30 million of proceeds related to the distribution of illegal drugs in the country
Indictment by Bea Parrillaa on Scribd
Andrews called the crime “one of the largest professional money laundering operations the state has ever seen.”
Andrews said the men offered their services to drug dealers across the southeast
from whom they would purchase a bunch of cash
The men would later allegedly use those proceeds to purchase electronics in China and the Middle East and use those transactions to conceal the illicit source of the money they received
“They offer their services to drug dealers across the south east from whom they would purchase large amounts of cash
they would then use those drug proceeds to purchase and ship electronics to destinations in China and the Middle East and use those transactions to conceal the illegal source of their funds,” said Andrews.
the men would use encrypted communication platforms such as “WeChat” and “WhatsApp” to communicate and send serial numbers for U.S
That would later be used as a verification code for the collection of drug proceeds at a particular location
Federal investigators say the defendants used residential properties on Currituck Drive and Rhododendron Street in Sumter to store the money they received
but operated out of two unnamed storefronts in Sumter County. The millions of dollars laundered from drugs were traced to the sale of multi-kilogram quantities of fentanyl
the defendants and their co-conspirators would use a verification code typically derived from a serial number on a U.S
dollar bill as a way to verify their authority to collect drug proceeds
Investigators said that a bulk of the cash that derived from drug trafficking was often concealed in bags and packaged in bundles with rubber bands and Saran wrap
“They used this drug money to purchase electronic devices which were then re-packaged and shipped to Hong Kong
the Drug Enforcement Administration Assistant Special Agent in Charge
The Drug Enforcement Administration says one of the seizures listed in the indictment of $177,000 had the potential to purchase 7 kilograms of fentanyl
which could kill 3 and a half million people
that’s more than half of the population of South Carolina
happened at least in or around April 2019 and lasted on or about November 2024
The men were charged with conspiracy to commit money laundering
Andrews said he couldn’t comment on whether others will face charged in the investigation
