SUNNY ISLES BEACH
– Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill was involved in a domestic dispute with his wife at his high-rise condominium in Sunny Isles Beach on Monday
according to an incident report obtained by Local 10 News on Wednesday
Leer en español
Officers with Sunny Isles Beach Police Department responded just before 2 p.m
to the 18000 block of Collins Avenue following a report of an “assault in progress.”
Vaccaro told officers she had been living with the couple since last November
shortly after the birth of her granddaughter
as “very aggressive and impulsive,” and said she feared for her daughter’s safety
Authorities said Vacarro called police after claiming that she witnessed Tyreek Hill throw a laptop on the floor
Video obtained exclusively by Local 10 News Wednesday shows Tyreek Hill holding his 5-month-old daughter while walking on the 35th-floor balcony of his residence
then looking over the edge during a reported argument with his wife
Keeta Hill told police that she and Tyreek Hill had been arguing more frequently and stated that whenever she gives her opinion on anything they discuss
“he becomes angry and throws objects around,” the report stated
She said the two had been attending couples therapy
police said she told Tyreek Hill that he wasn’t involved enough with their child
She then said Tyreek Hill became irritated and
“without malice,” grabbed the baby and began walking with her
Keeta Hill also stated that she is “in the process of filing for a divorce,” according to police
County records show she filed for divorce one day later
Authorities said Tyreek Hill told officers he had just returned from training and was discussing therapy with his wife when the argument escalated
Police said he admitted to grabbing the baby
“I have the same rights as a father as her as a mother
Although both Hill and his wife stated the argument never turned physical
officers said they observed a bruise on Keeta Hill’s upper chest
She told them it may have happened unintentionally when Hill took the baby from her
Officers noted the child appeared to be in good health
Keeta Hill declined to provide a written statement to police
They said Tyreek Hill left the condo around 2:40 p.m
in the presence of officers and no arrests were made
who they said remained at the residence with her mother and child
Monday’s incident is the latest in a string of off-the-field issues for the Dolphins’ star that date back to last year
Hall claims Tyreek Hill “forcefully and purposefully” pushed her during the incident
The Dolphins responded to the allegations in a statement released to Local 10 News on Wednesday:
we were informed that the police were called to Tyreek Hill’s home
and after conversations with Tyreek and members of his family
the police departed the residence without further incident and the case was closed
We have since been in communication with Tyreek and the NFL and will have no further comment on the matter.”

Florida lawmakers have sent the governor a measure aimed at providing relief for tens of thousands of condominium owners struggling with rising costs in aging buildings
A law passed shortly after 98 people died in the 2021 collapse of a residential tower in the town of Surfside
placed strict new requirements on condominium associations
The law requires condo associations in buildings older than 30 years to conduct regular structural integrity inspections and to fully fund reserves for needed repairs
Many condo associations missed the first deadline to comply with the law in December. In some older buildings, condo owners are being asked to pay steep special assessments that threaten to force some people out of their homes
The restrictions have helped slow condo sales statewide
Hearing the outcry from condo owners across the state
In response, Florida's House and Senate advanced different bills and, this week, finally agreed on a compromise measure. The bill, which now goes to governor for a signature
pushes back the deadline for completing a structural integrity inspection and allows condo associations a two-year grace period in fully funding reserves
It also allows condo associations that receive approval from a majority of members to secure loans and lines of credit to fund repairs
The sponsor of the bill in Florida's House
"We have tried to reach that delicate balance between the safety of our constituents as well as understanding the incredible financial impact that sometimes these particular bills that we passed have."
Florida's legislature passed a law to address the structural integrity of aging condo buildings in 2022 and amended it a year later
Before the collapse of the Champlain Towers South Building in Surfside
the condo association had delayed some $15 million in repairs needed to address that building's structural damage
Lawmakers said that the condo safety measures may need more attention in upcoming sessions
"I'm sure we will have to come back and do more work."

This is a response to a recent op-ed by North Miami Beach Mayor Michael Joseph
His piece contained numerous misstatements, which we are addressing here with facts backed by public records. Documentation is available upon request at [email protected]
The 25% surcharge is not used for water infrastructure
Mayor Joseph claims the 25% surcharge on customers outside North Miami Beach helps maintain water infrastructure
North Miami Beach’s own 2020 Revenue Bond disclosures say otherwise
“outside city surcharge revenue” is excluded from operating revenues and instead “passed through directly to the General Fund.” This means the surcharge is a tax
NMB officials now say removing the surcharge would cost them $5 million annually
the key question remains: Where does this money go
the surcharge revenue is deposited into North Miami Beach’s general fund
eliminating it wouldn’t affect the operations or maintenance of the water system for any customer
regardless of where they live — Miami Gardens
North Miami Beach’s own bond documents confirm that the system’s rates are sufficient to sustain operations without the surcharge
NMB claims it has tried to resolve this issue “neighbor-to-neighbor.” That’s revisionist history
NMB privatized its water utility despite being warned that doing so would invalidate the surcharge
Miami Gardens sued and won a $9 million settlement
That settlement is now being paid from NMB’s general fund
further proving the surcharge wasn’t used for infrastructure
If the surcharge was illegally applied to Miami Gardens during privatization
That would be the truly “neighborly” thing to do
The ‘options’ offered were not real solutions
NMB says it offered options to resolve the dispute
including transitioning Miami Gardens customers to Miami-Dade Water and Sewer or encouraging Miami Gardens to build its own utility
Let’s be clear: allowing Miami Gardens customers to switch to the County would breach NMB’s bond covenants
NMB has secured nearly $90 million in loans based on revenue from all water customers
The idea of Miami Gardens building its own utility also doesn’t hold water
Florida law prohibits a new utility system in areas already served by an existing municipal utility
The latest suggestion — letting Miami Gardens buy its stake in NMB Water — sounds reasonable on paper but wasn’t made in good faith
It was offered at the last minute as state legislation advanced
such a complex transaction requires significant due diligence
it has nothing to do with whether the current surcharge is justified
If NMB truly wants to sell its water utility
last-minute suggestions aren’t an excuse to continue an unjust practice
Some say this issue is too complicated for the public to understand
It’s a simple story — one community taking advantage of another
North Miami Beach has levied an unfair surcharge on residents of Miami Gardens
Golden Beach and unincorporated Miami-Dade
Miami Gardens simply had the courage and resources to stand up and fight back

City leaders officially broke ground on the future Intracoastal Sports Park on February 26
This long-anticipated project will transform a currently closed construction zone
located along 158th Street and Collins Avenue
into a vibrant outdoor space for recreation and movement
Members of the public joined elected officials
and the project’s management team to celebrate the milestone
The park will feature multi-use sports courts for tennis and basketball
and a pedestrian pathway designed to encourage an active lifestyle
“We are creating a space where people of all ages can come together
It’s not just about sports—it’s about fostering a stronger
healthier community,” said Mayor Larisa Svechin
City leaders have long recognized the need for additional outdoor sports facilities
With the city’s only indoor court located at Pelican Community Park
the new outdoor courts will provide a fresh way to play and stay active in the open air
“It’s a great addition,” said resident Jonas Nielsen. “You have so many residents that live in this area and they will be able to walk to the park, which is great!”
the Intracoastal Sports Park is expected to open by the end of the year

– Sunny Isles Beach police officers asked hundreds of tourists to disperse after they crowded an area of the beach on Friday
Police officers responded to the beach near Collins Avenue and 174 Street with bullhorns to shout orders at the crowd about “non-permitted gatherings.”

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue personnel responded
Police officers in Miami Beach and Fort Lauderdale were also on high alert this weekend
— Almost three dozen high-rise condos and luxury hotels along the beach in South Florida are sinking or settling in unexpected ways
in some cases because of nearby construction
The 35 buildings surveyed along an almost 12-mile stretch from Miami Beach to Sunny Isles Beach have sunk or settled by 0.8 to 3.1 inches
About half of the buildings are less than a decade old
according to scientists at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine
"The discovery of the extent of subsidence hotspots along the South Florida coastline was unexpected," Farzaneh Aziz Zanjani
"The study underscores the need for ongoing monitoring and a deeper understanding of the long-term implications for these structures."
It's not uncommon for buildings to sink a little during and soon after construction
but the scientists called their discovery surprising because some of the changes took place several years later
Limestone under the South Florida beach is interspersed with layers of sand
which can shift under the weight of high-rises and as a result of vibrations from foundation construction
Tidal flows and construction projects as far away as 1,050 feet have contributed to settling
The study used satellite images to capture the changes
with settling most noticeable in buildings in Sunny Isles Beach
The scientists said preliminary data also suggests sinking or settling further north
along the beaches of Broward and Palm Beach counties
The stretch of South Florida communities surveyed included Surfside
where the Champlain Towers South building collapsed in June 2021
that collapse is thought to have been caused by reinforced concrete that deteriorated due to poor maintenance and flawed design
the Surfside catastrophe highlighted the need to monitor building stability "especially in coastal areas with corrosive environmental conditions," the scientists said
The scientists said they want to further study whether different sections of impacted buildings are sinking at different rates
which could lead to cracks in their walls or utility breaks and lead to long-term damage
A separate study earlier this year showed buildings in major cities along the Atlantic Coast were sinking
The research from Virginia Tech and the U.S
Geological Survey showed that areas of New York City
Baltimore and Virginia Beach were sinking more than the rate of seawater rise

which involves the gradual sinking of the ground due to geological and human factors
A recent study by the University of Miami has highlighted a troubling issue that threatens the structural safety of 35 luxury buildings located in Miami Beach
(Complete list at the end of this article)
these buildings are experiencing a phenomenon known as "subsidence," which involves the gradual sinking of the ground due to geological and human factors
The sinking of the land in Miami is a multifactorial process
Vibrations from construction: Activities related to the construction of skyscrapers
compact the sand layers beneath the buildings
Water movement: The constant interaction of water with Miami's porous soil
known as "creep deformation," occurs when sand grains compact under the weight of structures
The sinking recorded between 2016 and 2023 varies between 0.8 and 3 inches
although in some buildings it reaches up to 8 centimeters
where different parts of the building sink at different rates
This phenomenon creates tensions that can manifest as cracks
is situated on porous limestone covered by layers of sand
This geological combination makes the land particularly vulnerable to sinking
especially in areas with high construction and in the face of rising sea levels
Among the affected buildings is the Porsche Design Tower
one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Miami
is renowned for its innovative design and unparalleled luxury
Each apartment is equipped with a robotic elevator system that allows cars to be parked within the residences
a symbol of exclusivity that has attracted owners such as Lionel Messi
the Porsche Design Tower has experienced a sinking of 10 centimeters between 2017 and 2021
Although there is no imminent risk of collapse
the rate of settling is concerning to experts
The study emphasizes the need for continuous monitoring of ground conditions in areas like Sunny Isles Beach
where the collapse of the Champlain Towers South in 2021 raised alarms about structural stability in the region
the collapse of the Champlain Towers South in Surfside
Residents of affected buildings must exercise caution
It is essential to consult the building's inspection records
request information on maintenance and monitoring plans

and that can cause the ground below them to slowly sink and settle
especially right after they’re constructed
dozens of buildings along the coast are sinking at “unexpected” rates
Scientists at the University of Miami found that 35 buildings along an approximately 11 mile stretch of the coast
are sinking into the ground—a process known as subsidence
Researchers examined the buildings from 2016 to 2023
and found that they sank two to eight centimeters—about .8 to 3 inches
Those buildings include beachfront condos and hotels
like the Trump Tower III (which sank 4 centimeters in that time) and the Ritz Carlton Residences (5 centimeters)
The worst subsidence was in Sunny Isles Beach, followed by Surfside, where a 12-story condo building collapsed in 2021
Miami Beach saw the least amount of subsidence
To figure out just how much these buildings were sinking
the researchers used satellite images that can measure elevation
or how much a building has sunk down to millimeters
They compared hundreds of those images over time to create a “surface displacement time series.”
“The discovery of the extent of subsidence hotspots along the South Florida coastline was unexpected,” Farzaneh Aziz Zanjani
lead author of the study and a former post-doctoral researcher at the school
“The study underscores the need for ongoing monitoring and a deeper understanding of the long-term implications for these structures.”
these buildings sit on limestone layered with sand
The ground is likely sinking because of how the grains of sand shift under the weight of the buildings
as well as the vibrations that happen during construction
But daily tides and cracks in the limestone could lead to ongoing sinking
(Experts not associated with the study also told the Miami Herald that rising sea levels
could be worsening limestone erosion in the ground.)
Still, the study, published in the journal Earth and Space Science
could be a “game changer” for monitoring buildings and the stability of the ground below them going forward
Researchers say that both local authorities and the residents of such buildings should be informed about any subsidence happening
which would allow them to monitor their buildings
While subsidence can’t totally be prevented
owners can ensure that the ground has proper drainage systems and work with engineers to reinforce a building’s foundation
“Our hope is that officials in Florida will recognize the value for continued research on this issue across the state and explore how this novel technology can benefit coastal residents,” geophysics professor and the study’s senior author Falk Amelung said

– A Sunny Isles Beach man with a tattoo of a target on his cheek is facing multiple charges after police said his girlfriend accused him of nearly a year of physical abuse
Leer en español
Authorities say the victim presented a trove of evidence
told investigators she had been dating 26-year-old Fernando Isaac Dixon Jr
for over a year and living with him for several months
she endured what she described as “physical abuse” from Dixon at different times throughout their relationship
Dixon’s arrest report stated that the victim documented her injuries with approximately 90 photos and videos
According to detectives with the Sunny Isles Beach Police Department
the victim provided a timeline of incidents dating back to October 2023
These include several episodes of violent outbursts
the victim said Dixon threw her to the ground
police said the victim described living in constant fear of Mixon
The victim claimed the abuse often left her visibly injured
but she refrained from seeking help out of fear of retaliation
Police said Dixon’s acts of violence were not limited to physical attacks
He reportedly used intimidation tactics to control the victim
including pointing guns at her and issuing death threats
Sunny Isles Beach police launched an investigation after they said the victim came forward with her evidence
and Dixon was located and detained by Miami police
Police said Dixon was arrested without incident and transported to the SIBPD for questioning
He was later booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center
Jail records show he is facing eight counts of battery and one count each of armed robbery with a firearm
aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and aggravated assault with a firearm

– Police officers recently arrested a 24-year-old man over the alleged crime that he committed after running into a 10-year-old girl and her 12-year-old sister in an elevator in a Sunny Isles Beach condominium building
they reported they didn’t understand what the man said because he didn’t say it in English
but the boundaries that they said he crossed when he interacted with the youngest were bad enough that their father called police
watched the surveillance video from the building
Barilari asked him why he greeted the 10-year-old girl with a “kissing gesture” and showed her his phone
Mejia “said he did show her the phone for translation,” Barilari wrote in his report
Barilari also reported Mejia was inconsistent throughout his investigation and his condominium building maintenance supervisor said it was his opinion that there were no work-related reasons for him to get off the elevator and follow the girls
Mejia ”stated that she winked at him and he took that as a sign that she wanted to talk to him
He then exited the elevator to continue talking to her and stated the victim extended her hand to him,” Barilari wrote
Barilari concluded Mejia’s actions were “intentional and physical which consisted of child abuse,” so he arrested him on Wednesday
Records show Miami-Dade correctional officers booked Mejia shortly before 9 p.m
and he remained at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center Thursday
Mejia faced a charge of child abuse without great bodily harm
Detectives asked anyone with information about this or other cases to call Miami-Dade County Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477

Bardmesser is seen approaching a group of teenagers who were eating
putting one in a chokehold while his back is turned
Several bystanders intervened before police arrived
we didn’t know what was going on,” said Sules
A newly released police report describes the teens as members of a political opposition group challenging Bardmesser
“There was a couple of kids sitting and I don’t know whether they were instigating
He put a chokehold on one of the kids and slapped another one,” said Pedro Vera
Additional cellphone video shows Bardmesser being confronted inside a restaurant after witnesses said he assaulted a 15 and 16-year-old
Bardmesser sent an invitation Saturday to a Republican coffee meet-up with Greg Capra
coffee and light snacks will be provided for guests,” he wrote
“I look forward to seeing you there and discussing our ideas and vision for the future.”
Fabiola Stuyvesant

Florida condos are sinking to the ground at "unexpected" rates
with almost 70 percent of buildings in the northern and central isles affected
according to new research from the University of Miami
Researchers have identified 35 buildings in areas like Sunny Isles Beach, Surfside, Bay Harbor and Miami Beach that have sunk between 0.8 and 3 inches between 2016 and 2023
These buildings include properties like the Porsche Design Tower
These high-rises accommodate tens of thousands of residents and tourists
including penthouses that cost millions of dollars
Newsweek has reached out to the Porsche Design Tower
The Surf Club Four Seasons and Faena Hotel via email for comment
and to the Ritz Carlton Residences via an online form for comment
The 35 high-rise condos are situated along the Miami-Dade coast
According to the Miami Herald, experts have said the sinking condos could be a sign that rising sea levels are accelerating the erosion of the limestone upon which South Florida is built
Researchers looked at satellite images that can measure subsidence
Subsidence is when the ground beneath a building sinks
pulling a building's foundations down with it
and researchers are able to measure it by fractions of an inch when looking at satellite imagery
This initial research came after the collapse of the Champlain Towers in Surfside
a 2021 tragedy that killed 98 people and led to laws that called for structural reviews of older condos across the state
The researchers did not see any signs of settlement before the collapse
What they did find was subsidence at nearby beachside properties both north and south of the Champlain Towers
Subsidence was found ranging between 0.8 and just over 3 inches, primarily in Sunny Isles Beach, Surfside and two buildings in Miami Beach
It is unclear what the implications of this sinking are or whether this slow subsidence could lead to long-term damage
The Miami Herald cited experts who warned that factors including erosion
stronger waves and groundwater pumping could accelerate the issue
"All occupied buildings in our city are inspected and receive certificates of occupancy in compliance with the Florida Building Code; consistently rated the safest in the country."
Svechin added: "The developers in our city work with world-class engineers
exceeding safety standards to ensure the structural integrity of their buildings
Geo-technical and structural engineers design buildings to account for this over time
Much remains uncertain related to the sinking reports and further research will likely be required to assess the long-term implications for these structures

Dozens of condos across Miami Beach to Sunny Isles Beach are sinking into the ground

Findings from a recent study led by experts at the University of Miami have unveiled that luxury condos and hotels across the South Florida coastline are
A team of scientists from the Rosenstiel School of Marine
and Earth Science have identified 35 buildings across Miami Beach
Surfside and Sunny Isles Beach experiencing unexpected ground sinking
It’s not necessarily at a rapid pace
but they are sinking slowly — anywhere between 0.8 and 3 inches from 2016 to 2023
used satellite data to measure the displacement over time
While it isn’t uncommon for buildings to sink slightly during or directly after construction
this study showed that subsidence — the gradual sinking of an area of land — can continue through for years
The research suggests that South Floria’s limestone terrain interspersed with layers of sand
paired with construction activities and groundwater movements
They call it “creep deformation,” in which sand grains compact under the weight of the massive structures
“South Florida’s geology is generally characterized by young
highly porous limestone containing dissolution features like vugs
“But the geological situation of the barrier islands is complex because the limestone may contain interbedded sand layers.”
the study found the most sinking in northern and central Sunny Isles Beach
with almost 70% of buildings experiencing subsidence
Bal Harbour and Miami Beach are also seeing settling
many of the properties affected are less than a decade old
and include structures like the Porsche Design Tower
the scientists analyzed data for Champlain Towers South in Surfside
which tragically collapsed in 2021 and killed nearly 100 people
though they found no signs of sinking before its collapse
the results of the study aren’t meant to instill fear
but instead emphasize the need for further monitoring and researching
