(AP) — Warren Buffett shocked an arena full of his shareholders Saturday by announcing that he wants to retire at the end of the year
Buffett said he will recommend to Berkshire Hathaway’s board that Greg Abel should become CEO at the end of the year
“I think the time has arrived where Greg should become the Chief Executive office of the company at year end,” Buffett said
Abel has been Buffett’s designated successor for years
and he already manages all of Berkshire’s noninsurance businesses
But it was always assumed he wouldn’t take over until after Buffett’s death
the 94-year-old Buffett has always said he has no plans to retire
READ MORE: Here is Warren Buffett’s first tax return, filed at age 14
Buffett announced the news at the end of a five-hour question and answer period and didn’t take any questions about it. He said the only board members who knew this was coming were his two children, Howard and Susie Buffett. Abel, who was sitting next to Buffett on stage, had no warning.
Many investors have said they believe Abel will do a good job running Berkshire, but it remains to be seen how good he will be at investing Berkshire’s cash. Buffett also endorsed him Saturday by pledging to keep his fortune invested in the company.
“I have no intention — zero — of selling one share of Berkshire Hathaway. I will give it away eventually,” Buffett said. “The decision to keep every share is an economic decision because I think the prospects of Berkshire will be better under Greg’s management than mine.”
Thousands of investors in the Omaha arena gave Buffett a prolonged standing ovation after his announcement in recognition of his 60 years leading the company.
CFRA research analyst Cathy Seifert said it had to be hard for Buffett to reach this decision to step down.
“This was probably a very tough decision for him, but better to leave on your own terms,” Seifert said. “I think there will be an effort at maintaining a ‘business as usual’ environment at Berkshire. That is still to be determined.”
In many respects, Abel has already been running much of the company for years. But he hasn’t been managing Berkshire’s insurance operations or deciding where to invest all of its cash. He will now take those tasks on, but Vice Chairman Ajit Jain will remain to help oversee the insurance companies.
Investment manager Omar Malik of Hosking Partners in London said before Buffett’s announcement that he wasn’t worried about Berkshire’s future under Abel.
“Not really (worried). He’s had such a long time alongside Warren and a chance to know the businesses,” Malik said about Abel.
The question is will he allocate capital as dynamically as Warren? And the answer is no.
“But I think he’ll do a fine job with the support of the others,” Malik said.
Cole Smead of Smead Capital Management said he wasn’t surprised Buffett is stepping down after watching him Saturday because the 94-year-old wasn’t as sharp as in past years. At one point, he made a basic math mistake in one of his answers. At other points, he got off track while telling stories about Berkshire and his investing without answering the question he was asked.
Abel is well regarded by Berkshire’s managers and Buffett has praised his business acumen for years. But he will have a hard time matching Buffett’s legendary performance, and since he doesn’t control 30% of Berkshire’s stock like Buffett does, he won’t have as much leeway.
“I think the challenge he’s going to have is if anyone is going to give him Buffett or (former Vice Chairman Charlie) Munger’s pass card? Not a chance in God’s name,” Smead said. Buffett always enjoyed a devoted following among shareholders.
Buffett has said that Abel might even be a more hands-on manager than he is and get more out of Berkshire’s companies.
“I think we’ll get a more hands-on manager and that could be that a good thing,” Steven Check, who runs Check Capital Management, said beforehand. But he said Abel also knows that those managers enjoy the freedom to run their businesses and Abel isn’t going to do anything to turn them off.
Earlier, Buffett warned Saturday about the dire global consequences of President Donald Trump’s tariffs while telling the thousands of investors gathered at his annual meeting that “trade should not be a weapon” but “there’s no question that trade can be an act of war.”
Buffett said Trump’s trade policies have raised the risk of global instability by angering the rest of the world.
“It’s a big mistake in my view when you have 7.5 billion people who don’t like you very well, and you have 300 million who are crowing about how they have done,” Buffett said as he addressed the topic on everyone’s mind at the start of the Berkshire Hathaway shareholders meeting.
While Buffett said it is best for trade to be balanced between countries, he doesn’t think Trump is going about it the right way with his widespread tariffs. He said the world will be safer if more countries are prosperous.
“We should be looking to trade with the rest of the world. We should do what we do best and they should do what they do best,” he said.
Buffett said he just doesn’t see many attractively priced investments that he understands these days, so Berkshire is sitting on $347.7 billion in cash, but he predicted that one day Berkshire will be “bombarded with opportunities that we will be glad we have the cash for.”
“This has not been a dramatic bear market or anything of the sort,” he said.
Buffett said he hasn’t bought back any of Berkshire’s shares this year either because they don’t seem to be a bargain either.
Investor Chris Bloomstran, who is president of Semper Augustus Investments Group, told the Gabelli investment conference Friday that a financial crisis might be the best thing for Berkshire because it would create opportunities to invest at attractive prices.
“I’m sure he’s praying that the trade war gets worse. He won’t say that publicly, but Berkshire needs a crisis. I mean Berkshire thrives in crisis,” Bloomstran said.
The meeting attracts some 40,000 people every year who want to hear from Buffett, including some celebrities and well-known investors. This year, Hillary Rodham Clinton also attended. Clinton was the last candidate Buffett backed publicly because he has shied away from politics and any controversial topic in recent years for fear of hurting Berkshire’s businesses.
Haibo Liu even camped out overnight outside the arena to be first in line Saturday morning. Liu said he worries that this year could be Buffett’s last meeting since he is 94, so he made it a priority to attend his second meeting.
“He has helped me a lot,” said Liu who traveled from China to attend. “I really want to express my thanks to him.”

President Donald Trump made yet another remark to chill the blood for those concerned about his country
Trump’s cat-and-mouse game of arbitrary changes to American import tariffs is starting to raise concerns about prices and supply chains for consumer goods
The American economy has unexpectedly shrunk in the first 100 days of Trump 2.0
even though workers and businesses are scrambling to make purchases before the effects of Trump tariffs set in
The underlying state of the economy is probably worse than the short-term numbers

Trump says this is all a matter of “get(ting) rid of the Biden ‘Overhang,’” i.e.
And let’s face it: no other politician on Earth would say anything else 100 days into an executive term
What struck me was his separate remark implying that
tariffs might foul up supply chains a little in the transition to the glorious economy of the future
but haven’t we Americans had it too soft for too long

“Maybe the children will have two dolls instead of 30 dolls,” the president mused
“So maybe the two dolls will cost a couple bucks more than they would normally.” The message
which brazenly puts the contentment of children front and centre
is one you can’t imagine any other American leader delivering so directly in peacetime: have you all considered being happy with less
Trump’s polling numbers have sagged badly among political independents, but his loyal voters haven’t started loathing him yet despite the bad economic signals. In the longtime American client states like Canada, we are all feeling newly awkward about the U.S.’s status as a vanguard of the species. We’ve been jolted into an awareness of our dependence on the United States.
The awkward part is that we mostly don’t want the U.S. to become just another country. In the balance sheet of history we must still count ourselves lucky in our choice of sole neighbour, and the good luck includes the albedo effect of American values we share: individualism, enterprise, brute materialistic competitiveness. If the American voter really does start voluntarily choosing two dolls at Christmastime instead of 30, something precious will have been lost from the world.

Those who knew the woman whose remains were discovered in a Surprise landfill said she endured a difficult childhood and struggled with mental health issues
Friends of 23-year-old Raquel Marie Morales shared that she had confided in them about being sexually abused by her father as a child
Prison records show he began serving a sentence just weeks before her remains were found
Family said she nearly died when she fled the state with a man unknown to them
"She was a sweet girl who made bad choices," said Ursula Villegas of Morales while describing the situation between the woman and the man she left Arizona with
broke the news of Morales’ death to her 24-year-old child
just minutes before the two spoke on May 2 with The Arizona Republic
Morales and Crull were friends since meeting at Desiderato High School in Phoenix
spending nights at Villegas’ home in the city
Morales would offer to help and often volunteered to cook for Villegas and Crull
a spokesperson said Morales had not been reported missing
Though her death was deemed "suspicious," a cause and manner remained pending
said that Morales once lived with them and their late grandfather at a home in Phoenix
became aggressive during a visit and falsely accused them of holding Morales hostage
"Her father made sure I wasn't in contact with her," Crull said
"He (Morales’ father) was a very messed-up man."
began a 25-year sentence on March 11 at the Florence state prison complex
The 47-year-old Theodore Ramsey is serving time on a sexual conduct with a minor conviction for a September 2010 incident he pleaded guilty to earlier this year
Morales was once employed at a Fry’s food store and was supposed to be living with a paternal cousin
She said Morales had earlier lived with both her and her father at her south Phoenix home
Susan Ramsey maintained that her son is innocent
According to Maricopa County court records
several additional charges related to sex crimes against children
which he was accused of committing between 1995 and 2018
were dismissed as part of the agreement after he admitted guilt in connection to a 2010 offense
Crull said she overheard Theodore Ramsey make a sexually objectifying comment about their body to Morales when he and his daughter were on a phone call
He knew me since I was a minor," Crull said
recalled being told by Morales how her father sexually abused her
Morales also told a schoolteacher about the abuse
The grandmother said her son has been jailed since August 2023
A police officer approached her on April 28
informing her Morales was missing and asking about Theodore Ramsey
She was informed of her granddaughter’s death by the woman’s mother a couple of days before the public announcement and said she was sleepless the night of May 1
Her granddaughter’s body had not yet been released to the family
Crull and Morales eventually lost touch with each other in 2021
Crull said Morales left with a man she told her friend she met through her father
Susan Ramsey said this man was a truck driver who abandoned her in the city of Indio in Southern California where she was hospitalized after she became unconscious and stopped breathing
"She had a close call then," Susan Ramsey said
adding her son drove out to California to retrieve his daughter
Neither Morales’ friends nor her grandmother know who this man was
Morales was bullied by schoolmates at Alma L
an elementary and middle school located at Baseline Road and Seventh Street
"I used to be there for her … like her protector
I told people to leave her alone," Dio told The Republic over the phone shortly before her voice catched as she remembered her late friend
The family received disability payments for Morales
according to Villegas and a neighbor of hers who said he cashed those checks for her at a check-cashing business where he was previously employed
Susan Ramsey said her granddaughter was bipolar and had ADHD and was taking medication
Villegas said that in addition to an ADHD diagnosis
Susan Ramsey recalled Morales being a docile girl growing up
you didn't even know she was around," the grandmother said May 2
said she would miss her granddaughter and "the times that we’ve had together."
Surprise police said in an email that the lead detective on Morales’ case was not available for questions over the weekend when The Republic reached out the afternoon of Saturday
Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the Surprise Police Department at 623-222-8477 or email crimetips@surpriseaz.gov

Carbon dating of charcoal found during the dig shows the hearth was in use around 1721-1814. That’s according to a recent study done by a team of archaeologists
“It dates to when the Spanish were hanging out in that part of Colorado,” researcher Sara Millward said
animal bones and other items that are likely associated with Indigenous people
Museum director Anne Stattelman said the fort’s curator
a professional anthropologist from Aims Community College in Northern Colorado
are continuing to analyze the animal bones and other artifacts found at the site
“They're finding out some additional things (by) working on the actual bones,” she said
“They think it's a really unique feature to have that many bones in one place.”
Stattelman said some bones have saw marks and other evidence of butchering using tools
Other bones are broken or burned and may have been marrow bones or soup bones
“We really want to analyze what those bones are,” she said
“That's going to tell us a lot more about what La Veta looked like prior to 1710.”
There are accounts of a fort or a stockade in the area built around 1710
Some people think that the current fort is built on that foundation
” It's all conjecture.” It’s part of the story they hope to learn more about
Both Millward and Stattelman suggest the various artifacts found at the site show the convergence of different cultures
“Because a good place to live is always a good place to live,” Millward said
if you have trees and animals and a flat place to camp or build a structure or whatever
humans are drawn over and over again to the same areas on a landscape.”
often we'll find them in areas that just seem like a nice place to camp or hang out.”
Some artifacts will be on display at the museum this summer
The museum is planning to host a cultural event on July 26
and they’ve invited Ute dancers — native to the area – to perform
Stattelman said they’ve been working to display the artifacts appropriately and they are seeking feedback from the tribe
Both Millward and Stattelman said there’s more work to be done and learning more about the site will be ongoing

The Brit left the UFC in 2023 to pursue a boxing career, where he has had a stop-start run with just two fights. He is set to headline Misfits Boxing 21 on Friday May 16 when he faces fellow UFC veteran Darren Stewart in yet another rescheduled bout following his win over Anthony Taylor
Till has always maintained that he will only get back into the cage for his inevitable return to the sport’s top promotion
But speaking exclusively with Bloody Elbow
he noted that he has eyes on another league for his comeback
Since leaving the UFC after his loss to the future champion Dricus Du Plessis at UFC 282, Darren Till has always maintained that his relatioship with the promotion is strong
He has turned down offers for other MMA fights
However, he is now open to a move to the supremo’s biggest competition the PFL, telling Bloody Elbow: “I’m not too old in the sport, my body’s not broken even though I’ve obviously had trouble with my knees but I’m fresh.
“I don’t feel like I have any case of that CTE, I pronounce my words properly, I’ve got a solid brain on myself even though I know I say some mad things sometimes. That’s just public persona, obviously I’m a mad c— but I don’t think I have any early signs of CTE, or I hope not.
“So I might go back… Depending on thing I might try my hand at the PFL, have a little go. I speak to them quite a bit and look if the UFC want me back then let’s see what happens with all that.
“I’ve spoke to the PFL and I like the way they do their organization. I would actually love a bash at it. It just depends then if the UFC would have me back after that, I don’t know. I think I still have a few years left in me.”
Before any talk of a return to the cage, Till must first take on Darren Stewart in his sophomore Misfits Boxing outing. The British duo are both veterans of the UFC, albeit with the Scouser going considerably farther in his run.
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Misfits Boxing (@misfitsboxing)
They meet in a rearranged bout in Derby at the Vaillant Live
with Till saying of the fight: “Darren did well in the UFC
he was always tough and was quite game but we were on different paths during our time in the UFC
we’re both having a go at the boxing and we’re going to have a tear up in Derby in two weeks… It was always going to be the main event.”
Darren Till faces Darren Stewart in the main event of Misfits & DAZN X-Series 21 on Friday May 16. Tickets are available at Ticketmaster, while international viewers can watch as part of the DAZN subscription.

The original trilogy of Star Wars is arguably the best out of the three
in terms of consistency anyway as all three films are fantastic in their own way
Disney’s sequels did an admirable job of continuing the saga, but fell short in several areas, especially from Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi onwards
with Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise Of Skywalker being irredeemable to many
it needed a lot more work before it was released to audiences
For those who are disappointed through and through with how the story continued after Star Wars Episode VI: Return Of The Jedi, I have good news as a sequel comic is coming out that’ll tell you what happened after the events of the film
and make some of Disney’s story inclusions make more sense
It’s the new Star Wars comic series created by Marvel
and the first issue picks up in the final days of the intergalactic war between the Rebels and The Empire
featuring the infamous trio Luke Skywalker
The description reads: “The New Republic defeated the last remnants of the Empire at the legendary Battle of Jakku
but the greatest threats to its success are just emerging in this transformative period of Star Wars lore … this new landscape of stories represents Marvel’s most revelatory contributions to the Star Wars mythos yet.”
It sounds like a good read and it’ll be available on 7 May
so you’ve got less than a week to wait until you can get your hands on it
While the sequel trilogy isn't the best in the Skywalker Saga
I think it did have some redeeming elements
like Kylo Ren who’s origins get explored more in this comic series
as that’s when you’ll be able to dive deeper into the Star Wars galaxy than ever before

Alex Toohey is planning on turning some heads ahead of the NBA draft
It's something the rising Australian star has made a habit of lately
Rewind back to a pre-Olympic training camp in Los Angeles
when head coach Brian Goorjian walked into the gym
you're way bigger than I thought you were."
Fast forward to the most recent NBL Blitz -- the league's annual preseason tournament -- where a barrage of three-point shooting and an explosive poster dunk had the NBA scouts in attendance stunned at Toohey's athleticism and development leap
With a second NBL season with the Sydney Kings in the books and the draft drawing nearer
Toohey is set to take part in a plethora of workouts with NBA teams
and is among the 75 prospects invited to the 2025 NBA Draft Combine
Multiple NBA teams travelled to Australia over the course of the NBL season to lay eyes on Toohey
but he really believes those who've been evaluating his game have only scratched the surface
"Pretty much every area a basketball player can show
I feel like I'm gonna surprise some people over there," Toohey told ESPN
Toohey already has a lot going for him as a prospect
6'8 wing who's shown the ability to compete effectively in a professional league
demonstrating himself as a high-level multi-positional defender
an improving catch-and-shoot threat from beyond the three-point line
Throw in a high-IQ and unimpeachable off-court intel
and it's no surprise most draft evaluators have him hovering around a late-first
Toohey has already begun conducting workouts with NBA teams - in what's expected to be a busy schedule for the Canberra-native - and is highly-regarded enough to have been among the potential draftees invited to participate in the draft combine in Chicago from May 11-18
players will take part in athletic testing and measurements
"Athleticism is probably gonna be the biggest one," Toohey said
on some of the preconceptions he's looking to change
the [NBA] guys are constantly on them 24/7
so there's not much the combine's gonna show these coaches when they've watched all these trainings and practices and all the games
Sydney Kings' Alex Toohey in action during the round 15 NBL match against Brisbane Bullets
it's gonna be a big area for me to kind of separate myself
I've heard a few question marks on my athleticism
and being able to create plays for my teammates
That's something I pride myself on: being an all-round basketball player
definitely being able to create for my teammates
I think that's something that developed from the first year to my second year
I'm much more confident in it; got more rhythm
It definitely motivates me to turn those heads and change peoples' perspectives."
Toohey is coming off his second season with the Kings as part of the NBL's Next Stars program
averaging 10.5 points and 3.9 rebounds per game under new head coach Goorjian
showing off an improved offensive package and more refined athletic frame
The season was impressive enough that the now-21-year-old won the league's Next Generation Award - given to the best player under the age of 25 - and set himself up to declare for the NBA draft
it's just having that confidence in myself," Toohey said
"I definitely took a jump from the first year to the second year; my body developed
I feel like I kind of had that in me in the first year
and how to develop that trust with the coach and the system to make them put [you] in that position..
one thing I kept talking about was: how do I want to fail
if I'm gonna not make it to where I want to be
I don't want it to be because I turned down opportunities or didn't put the work in
I'm gonna fail prepared and go down swinging
of trying not to have any regrets on the court
kind of allowed me to clear my mind a little bit and trust my instincts and play off feel instead of trying to overthink things
"Goorj was a big reason for that; he just tried to instil confidence in me and the team
but just my ability and belief in myself was probably one of the biggest jumps as well."
Shortly after the NBL season came to an end
where he would work out at the Australian Institute of Sport - where he was once a member of the NBA Global Academy - and scrimmage against some of the program's current cohort
"I'm trying to work on everything I can," Toohey said
is my defensive versatility; I think that's something I'm very good at
Being able to slide my feet more efficiently
I can really feel the difference in the last three weeks of doing Pilates
really focusing on my core; I feel like that's unlocked a whole other level of my defensive game
"I'm excited to turn some heads with that."
For whatever concerns may exists on whether to trust the jump-shot - he was a 30.2% three-point shooter over his past NBL season
on 2.9 attempts a game - or ability to consistently guard at an effective level on the perimeter
there are more than enough positive indicators that he can
develop into an extremely functional NBA player
according to most NBA scouts who've seen Toohey play in person
is a simple one: he's demonstrated the ability to develop
as a player and from an athletic standpoint
from the end of his first season in Sydney to the start of his second
was profound and noticeable; the NBA personnel who laid eyes on him in the Gold Coast said as much
smart wing who plays both ends and has impeccable off-court intel is someone who can be trusted to make material improvements in his game
The deep thought in his development processes -- both as an athlete and human -- is noticeable when speaking with Toohey
and ultimately the trait that makes the Australian a safe bet for an NBA team to make come the draft on June 25 and 26

2025 Matt King/Getty Images"One of the quotes I like to use is: where you are now is a testament to what you were doing six months ago," Toohey said
"That was a motto for me in the last off-season
and the time I spent in California working out there with my trainer and the people surrounding me; iron sharpens iron
Klay Thompson coming into the gym was super cool for me to see
I kind of have that little checkpoint of seeing where he's at
where I'm at; things that he's better at and areas I think I can definitely catch him
he can score without having the ball in his hands
I'm probably not gonna have the ball in my hands to be much of a creator
so being able to fill that role and be able to help the team and be efficient with what I've got
"Playing this year with the Kings kind of set me up to be used to playing off the catch
and having that shorter leash and understanding ways to get myself going
whether it's getting steals or crashing the offensive glass
and there are gonna be ups and downs no matter what
but I feel like having that good off-season and seeing my body develop..
now it's kind of just trusting the process and understanding that whatever I was doing there
"It's never gonna be the same offseason twice
but I'm trying to keep a lot of those things the same
and change certain areas where I think it's gonna be best to take that next step."
The Scottish musician breaks health-related hiatus with gig in support of the suicide prevention charity Calm
Lewis Capaldi performed on stage for the first time in two years after making a surprise appearance at a charity gig in Edinburgh to raise funds for suicide prevention
He appeared on Friday night at the concert – headlined by Tom Walker and Nina Nesbitt– at Edinburgh Assembly Halls
in aid of the charity Campaign Against Living Miserably (Calm)
At the time he announced his hiatus, he noted that he had “noticed a marked improvement” with both his Tourette’s syndrome and anxiety since taking a break from performing
which was a “last-minute decision” according to the headliner
Fans were told to stay around for a secret act in addition to him and Nesbitt
The BBC reported that Walker said: “When Lewis confirmed he wanted to do it last minute
We’ve bumped into each other a few times over the years backstage at fezzys [festivals] and events
“I know how much pressure this industry can put on artists at times
The gig on Friday was the first of three phone-free scheduled charity shows
at Albert Halls in Stirling and the final one due to take place on 10 May at Glasgow Old Fruitmarket
Fans were asked not to film any of the gig
with their phones placed in sealed pouches throughout it
had his Glastonbury 2023 show disrupted by his vocal tics
playing a virtual acoustic concert in 2020 to support the charity
the singer explored how the pressures of fame have affected him mentally and physically in the Netflix documentary Lewis Capaldi: How I’m Feeling Now
“For [Capaldi] to be able to play a little secret gig in a safe space without all the phones
the noise and the expectations was perfect,” Walker said
Of everyone released from Raw, SmackDown and NXT this past weekend, Braun Strowman was easily the biggest surprise and the most baffling of the bunch.
The Monster of All Monsters was previously let go back in 2021, only to return the following year under the Triple H regime and have a much stronger, better-booked run the second time around. His departure comes on the heels of a fun feud with Jacob Fatu where he helped put over the former Bloodline member to United States Championship status.
Meanwhile, WWE is still in the process of finding of what works with Seth Rollins now that he's reverted to his heel roots on Raw. His first official night alongside Paul Heyman and Bron Breakker was marred by positive crowd reactions due to The Visionary not doing anything to turn the audience against him.
His new faction is capable of carrying the red brand for the foreseeable future, but it won't reach its full potential if the company doesn't go all the way with Rollins as an antagonist.
This installment of Quick Takes will discuss what's next for The Visionary, the true future of All Elite Wrestling, how Liv Morgan's hiatus affects the Raw women's division, and more.
That included Gunther, Jacob Fatu and especially Bronson Reed with the many enjoyable encounters he had with all three behemoths.
Strowman's limited mobility may have been the biggest reason behind his release, but it doesn't make the move any less puzzling.
Although he had done virtually everything there was to do, he had carved out a solid spot for himself on the roster as WWE's resident giant and was both established and over with the audience. He was the perfect fit for that spot following the in-ring retirements of Big Show, Kane and Mark Henry.
WWE needs more Superstars such as Strowman who can work with the up-and-comers and put them over. There was a consistency with his matches as well as his crowd reactions, something that can't be said for a vast majority of the active roster.
The Monster of All Monsters isn't a massive loss for WWE, but this redemption run of his deserved to end on a higher note considering the contributions he's made in the last three years.
A case can be made for a few of them being underutilized, most notably Cora Jade. She had been a fixture on NXT TV for nearly four years and evolved into an excellent heel, but the influx of international talent caused her to be overshadowed and put her on the chopping block if she was going to remain lost in the shuffle on the main roster.
Meanwhile, Gigi Dolin and Shotzi had a great thing going in the women's tag team ranks with Tatum Paxley, much like Jakara Jackson with Lash Legend. Shayna Baszler had been teaming for a year and a half, while Katana Chance and Kayden Carter were the best women's team WWE had.
The top takeaway from the latest round of release is that the company clearly doesn't see the women's tag team scene as a priority and unfortunately never will.
Being let go could ultimately be a blessing in disguise for some of these stars if they take this opportunity to reassess, reinvent and rebound in another promotion.
AEW isn't automatically the answer as it has roster woes of its own at the moment, but there are any number of places these performers can go to show what WWE has lost and possibly be brought back down the road.
For all the talk of AEW's "four pillars" over the years, MJF has been the only one to emerge as a main event player for the promotion, with Darby Allin on the cusp of breaking through to the next level and Jack Perry and Sammy Guevara settling into midcard roles instead.
Even Daniel Garcia and Wheeler Yuta were at one point believed to be the next wave of talent to be pushed toward the top of the card, but it becomes increasingly apparent by the week that the true future of AEW is Kyle Fletcher.
The former tag team specialist has come into his own as a member of The Don Callis Family and maximized every opportunity he's been afforded, specifically during his phenomenal feud with Will Ospreay.
His stellar showing against "Hangman" Adam Page in the semifinals of the men's Owen Hart Cup on Dynamite proved his worth as a star on the rise ready for bigger and better things.
Although the time isn't quite right for the 26-year-old to be moved into the main event picture, he should be a world champion much sooner than fans expect him to be.
Fletcher is constantly improving his presentation, promos and skill set and has all the tools needed to be one of the guys AEW builds around. The key now will be for Tony Khan to maintain his momentum and keep him trending in the right direction.
Liv Morgan continues to be the MVP of the WWE women's division
which is what makes her upcoming hiatus from TV that much of a bigger blow
She has seen her stock skyrocket in the last year and could be in line for more major opportunities if this film is a success
That also means Monday nights will be without Morgan for the time being
and her absence is guaranteed to be felt by fans
The WWE women's tag team champion's character work and even her matches have been a recurring highlight on Raw for a while
She'll pick up where she left off once she returns
but WWE should use this period to showcase other stars on the red brand and attempt to get over the likes of Roxanne Perez and Giulia
but WWE has failed to utilize it creatively or effectively beyond the recent rivalry between Becky Lynch and Lyra Valkyria
This is the time to experiment with the roster so Morgan has compelling opposition to work with and ideally elevate on her return
Craig Ambrosio/WWE via Getty ImagesSeth Rollins joining forces with Paul Heyman was one of the top talking points coming out of WrestleMania 41 weekend
but WWE is already doing the angle a disservice by not giving The Visionary a full-fledged heel turn
Shades-of-gray characters can be interesting
but not when the intent is for them to be booed and fans are rebelling
That was evident during the April 28 edition of Raw when Rollins and Bron Breakker attacked Sami Zayn to end the night and were largely met with a chorus of cheers
That's primarily because the company did little to get Rollins booed
He did his same shtick to start the show and changed nothing about how he interacted with the audience
If this character shift is going to be a success
Ditching the catchy entrance music—a song that encourages fans to sing along—is especially imperative
Roman Reigns and others giving Rollins and Co
their comeuppance won't mean much if fans are behind the heels
it runs the risk of sabotaging the storyline before it has the chance to really get going
MVP contenders like Aaron Judge and Fernando Tatis Jr
The Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets are leading their divisions and look like World Series contenders
But there have also been some unexpected developments
Tyler Mahle is tied for the lowest ERA in the American League
Seiya Suzuki leads the National League in isolated slugging
A couple of expected World Series contenders are below .500 and appear to have serious flaws
These are the sort of early-season oddities that are starting to take on meaning
Every team contains at least one major surprise from the first month of the regular season
We’ve included them in the power rankings below
All of these surprises probably won’t last
Tim Capurso handled the AL East and AL Central
Will Laws covered the NL East and NL Central
and Nick Selbe covered the AL West and NL West
Biggest surprise: The strength of the pitching staffThe Mets lead the majors with a 2.68 ERA despite the pitching staff not being perceived as the club’s biggest strength heading into the season
Starting pitcher Tylor Megill is a major reason why
After never posting an ERA below 4.00 in his first four seasons
the 29-year-old ranks sixth with a 1.74 ERA while leaning heavier on his sinker this year and after remodeling his curveball and changeup over the offseason
Megill saw a major jump in his strikeout rate last season
and that’s become even more pronounced (29.8%) in 2025
Biggest surprise: MLB’s highest-scoring offenseThe Cubs’ offense is rolling, scoring a league-high six runs per game, and with 46 home runs (third in MLB) and 44 stolen bases (first in MLB) is really fun to watch
Center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong has come into his own during his second full season and is on pace to collect at least 25 home runs and 50 stolen bases while making a strong play for the Platinum Glove (MLB-best seven outs above average)
Kyle Tucker and Suzuki have been excellent
and honorable mention goes to veteran catcher Carson Kelly
who hasn’t slowed down one bit since hitting for the cycle on March 31
slashing .360/.507/.840 with seven homers and only six strikeouts in 50 at bats
Biggest surprise: Tommy Edman’s power strokeThe Dodgers boast an embarrassment of riches
The super utility man has eight homers through the team's first 31 games
on pace to surpass his career high of 13 in a few weeks
The recipe for more power has been simple for the 29-year-old: more pulled fly balls
an approach that has produced a career-best 47.9% hard-hit rate
but Edman could be the latest breakout on a team full of All-Stars
went from battling all spring for the Tigers’ fifth rotation spot to trailing only reigning Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal in ERA among the club’s starters after the first month of the season
who is walking fewer batters than ever before
seems to be figuring things out in his age-28 season
Biggest surprise: RP Devin WilliamsBen Rice’s emergence and
have been surprising to the masses but likely not to the Yankees
Williams’s struggles—and demotion from the closer role—have been surprising to both parties
But the results so far—career-worst 20% strikeout rate
16% walk rate and a 9.00 ERA—have been alarming
Biggest surprise: SP Nick PivettaPivetta was a late addition to the Padres
the 32-year-old is 5–1 with a 1.78 ERA—not bad for a player with a career 4.76 ERA in more than 1,000 innings
His previous season low was a 4.04 mark in 2023
Biggest surprise: DH Jorge PolancoMariners fans were plenty frustrated this offseason when the front office opted not to sign any impact hitters to boost an offense that held back the team's stellar pitching last year
The largest financial commitment the organization made was a one-year
$7 million deal to re-sign infielder Jorge Polanco
the bargain bin hunting has paid off in a big way: Seattle leads the AL with a 125 wRC+ and ranks third in runs scored
and Polanco has nine homers and 28 hits in 22 games
Lee’s second season in San Francisco is going far better than his first
San Francisco Giants (OD: 18)Biggest surprise: CF Jung Hoo LeeBecause his debut season was cut short due to injury
it might be easy for fans to forget that Lee came to the Giants after signing a $113 million deal ahead of the 2024 campaign
He's showing why he earned such a lucrative payday with his play this season
as the center fielder is pacing San Francisco's lineup with an .893 OPS and 16 extra-base hits
Biggest surprise: 3B Alec BohmAfter earning his first All-Star Game appearance last year
The 28-year-old is batting just .222 with a dreadful .252 on-base percentage
has yet to hit a home run and has just five extra-base hits in 123 plate appearances
If Bohm isn’t hitting for average or power
who will likely seek a third baseman at the trade deadline if this continues
Biggest surprise: How quickly young hitters have come of ageIt’s no surprise that Kristian Campbell
But even the most optimistic Red Sox fan couldn’t have foreseen this
Both Campbell (15.4% walk rate) and Abreu (17.4%) have displayed patience beyond their years
Both rank among MLB’s top 15 in OPS and WAR and have powered baseball’s third-best run-scoring offense
Biggest surprise: SS Geraldo PerdomoThough he's only 25
Perdomo had seemingly established his role over three full seasons as a glove-first
Perdomo posted the fifth-lowest slugging percentage (.328) out of 230 qualified hitters
So it's quite a surprise that the switch-hitter has posted a .275/.387/.459 slash line with five homers and 25 RBIs through Arizona's first 31 games
Perdomo is running a 15.7% walk rate and a 9.7% strikeout rate
showcasing elite contact skills to significantly raise his offensive floor
Biggest surprise: RP Emmanuel Clase’s demotionClase allowed just five earned runs in 74 ⅓ innings in 2024
finishing third in the Cy Young Award voting
Clase has notched five saves but already yielded twice as many earned runs as last year and was (briefly) demoted from the closer role
Is it surprising that he’s even in this position a month into the season
Biggest surprise: DH Yordan Alvarez’s power outageFrom 2021 to '24
only Aaron Judge had a higher wRC+ than Alvarez's 165
Alvarez is batting .219/.316/.354 with just three home runs
Houston's pitching has picked up the slack and kept the team above .500
but the Astros rank 22nd in runs and could sorely use a return to form from their most feared hitter
Sale has absorbed a team-high three losses for Atlanta
Atlanta Braves (OD: 7)Biggest surprise: SP Chris Sale's hittabilityThe Braves have somewhat recovered from their ugly 0–7 start by going 14–9 since then
but their rotation has still been shaky after it was one of the league’s best units last year
Atlanta needs reigning NL Cy Young winner Chris Sale (career-worst 4.84 ERA) to lead a staff that’s endured quite a bit of attrition through free agency and injuries since last fall
but opposing hitters are batting .380 and slugging .680 against his fastball
and batting .435 while slugging .739 against his changeup
That can’t last—and Sale’s league-high .383 BABIP indicates it won’t
Biggest surprise: SP Chad PatrickChad Patrick has been a nice find for the .500 Brewers as they await the return of Brandon Woodruff to the rotation
acquired from Oakland in November 2023 for infielder Abraham Toro
has allowed two runs or fewer in five of his six starts
Patrick has average stuff and shouldn’t be counted on to keep up his 2.45 ERA
but he could end up as another pitching development success story for Milwaukee
Biggest surprise: 3B Noelvi MarteAfter ranking as one of the majors’ most unproductive players last season by accumulating -1.8 WAR in 66 games
former top prospect Noelvi Marte has seized the Reds’ third base job by slashing .315/.373/.593 in 15 games
but the 23-year-old acquired from Seattle in the Luis Castillo trade has the potential to be a dynamic cornerstone for the Reds alongside Elly De La Cruz
Biggest surprise: Struggles with RISPAside from its pitching staff
one of the strengths of last year’s 86-win Royals team was its lineup’s ability to hit with runners in scoring position
(.541 OPS) and nine-time All-Star Salvador Perez (.576 OPS) have been the biggest offenders
and Kansas City has won nine of 10 to shake off its early slump
Biggest surprise: Offensive malaiseThrough the season's first month
There's plenty of blame to go around—Jake Burger has underwhelmed after the team traded three prospects to acquire him this offseason
Marcus Semien has a 47 wRC+ and Joc Pederson had an 0-for-41 slump
Josh Smith and Josh Jung have helped pick up the slack
but the underperformers will need to step up for Texas to keep pace in the division race
Biggest surprise: SS Jacob WilsonThe success Wilson has been able to sustain with such an extreme contact-heavy approach—he has two walks and six strikeouts in 117 plate appearances—has certainly been a surprise
The rookie shortstop doesn't swing hard
he doesn't hit the ball in the air and he doesn't take pitches
and he has been a .325 hitter with a 127 wRC+
Misner is seemingly Tampa Bay’s latest player development success story
Tampa Bay Rays (OD: 21)Biggest surprise: OF Kameron MisnerThe Rays always seem to find a diamond in the rough
but outfielder Misner’s play is impressive even by Tampa Bay’s standards
The 27-year-old rookie outfielder labored in the minor leagues for five seasons before receiving his big-league chance with a Rays outfield plagued by injuries
He has taken the opportunity and run with it
ranking second on the team in OPS (.908) and batting average (.316)
The Orioles are likely regretting cheaping out on pitching needs during the offseason
Biggest surprise: RP Danny Coulombe’s scoreless innings streakOne of Minnesota’s few free agent additions
is pitching better than ever in his age-35 season
The southpaw has yet to allow a run in the first 11 ⅔ innings he’s worked
Coulombe has been a master at inducing weak contact and a key arm in the Twins’ solid bullpen
Biggest surprise: RF Jordan Walker looking like a bustThere isn’t anything too terribly surprising about the Cardinals
a middling squad with few standout performances in either direction (Brendan Donovan has had a strong start
Perhaps the most unexpected development is that former top prospect Jordan Walker still hasn’t figured it out and has gotten progressively worse with each passing season
The 23-year-old is slashing .210/.269/.290 amid a current 6-for-47 slump with one extra-base hit over his last 13 games
He’s running out of chances to prove himself in St
Biggest surprise: Underachieving sluggersIn a year where league-wide batting average and runs per game are historically on the lower side
a struggling offense would seem to be an everyone-problem
Toronto’s offensive output has been concerning
Toronto has scored the fifth-fewest runs in MLB
Bo Bichette and Anthony Santander must start hitting like the back of their baseball cards for Toronto to avoid the AL East basement
Biggest surprise: SP MacKenzie GoreGore has taken the next step and is pitching like an ace for the Nationals
leading the majors with 59 strikeouts and 13 K/9 IP
handing out fewer than two free passes per nine innings
James Wood battling for the league home run lead and CJ Abrams raking at career best rates across the board
Washington’s side of their Juan Soto trade is looking awfully good three years on
Biggest surprise: RF Bryan ReynoldsThe Pirates are predictably once again in the NL Central cellar after a disappointingly inactive offseason
cornerstone outfielder Bryan Reynolds has been below replacement level with career-worst marks across the board
notably a .238 batting average and 30.3% strikeout rate
And after ranking as one of MLB’s worst outfielder by outs above average in left field last season
the 30-year-old hasn’t looked better in right field
Pittsburgh needs Reynolds to play to his usual standards to have any chance of competing for a playoff spot
Biggest surprise: Lineup’s alarming lack of disciplineIs there anything really surprising about the Angels' suboptimal start to the year
The team has lost 13 of 16 following a 9–5 start
and has the second-worst run differential (-47) in the AL
it's still somewhat of a surprise to see any club struggle to the degree Angels hitters have: they have the highest strikeout rate (26.6%) and lowest walk rate (6.6%) in the AL
Alcantara has badly struggled in his return from Tommy John surgery
Miami Marlins (OD: 30)Biggest surprise: SP Sandy AlcantaraEveryone knew the Marlins were going to be bad
but the consensus was that their offense would be the root of their problems
the lineup has been surprisingly feisty (they rank 14th with 4.5 runs per game) while a fairly talented pitching staff has severely disappointed
The main culprit is 2022 NL Cy Young winner Sandy Alcantara
who has allowed 24 runs in 26 innings with nearly as many walks (17) as strikeouts (19)
It was widely assumed Alcantara would be shipped to a contender before the trade deadline
but no one will want him if he keeps pitching like that
Biggest surprise: SP Shane SmithCan the biggest surprise be that the White Sox don’t have the worst record in MLB
then it must be righthander Shane Smith’s breakout
ranks 11th in MLB in ERA through six starts
The 25-year-old’s changeup has developed into one of the best in baseball
Smith generates a 35.2% whiff rate with the pitch
which opponents have hit just .111 against
but the development of young players like Beck could be a silver lining that better days are ahead

In 2024, scientists stumbled upon a potential new treatment for hereditary-patterned baldness, the most common cause of hair loss in both men and women worldwide
It all started with research on a sugar that naturally occurs in the body and helps form DNA: the 'deoxyribose' part of deoxyribonucleic acid
While studying how these sugars heal the wounds of mice when applied topically
scientists at the University of Sheffield and COMSATS University in Pakistan noticed that the fur around the lesions was growing back faster than in untreated mice
In a study published in June 2024, they took male mice with testosterone-driven hair loss and removed the fur from their backs. Each day, researchers smeared a small dose of deoxyribose sugar gel on the exposed skin
the fur in this region showed 'robust' regrowth
the team found it worked just as well as minoxidil
a topical treatment for hair loss commonly known by the brand name Rogaine
"Our research suggests that the answer to treating hair loss might be as simple as using a naturally occurring deoxyribose sugar to boost the blood supply to the hair follicles to encourage hair growth," said tissue engineer Sheila MacNeil from the University of Sheffield
Hereditary-patterned baldness, or androgenic alopecia
and it presents differently in males and females
The disorder impacts up to 40 percent of the population
and yet the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has only approved two drugs to treat the condition thus far
While over-the-counter minoxidil can work to slow hair loss and promote some regrowth
it doesn't work for all those experiencing hair loss
then male patients can turn to finasteride (brand name Propecia) – a prescribed oral drug that inhibits the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone
"The treatment of androgenetic alopecia remains challenging," MacNeil and her colleagues, led by biomaterial researcher Muhammad Anjum from COMSATS, write in their published paper
and applied the treatment to mouse models of male-pattern baldness
Minoxidil was also tested on balding mouse models
and some of the animals received a dose of both sugar gel and minoxidil for good measure
Compared to mice that received a gel without any medicine
those that received a gel with deoxyribose sugar began to sprout new hair follicles
Both minoxidil and the sugar gel promoted 80 to 90 percent hair regrowth in mice with male pattern baldness
Photographs were taken at various stages throughout the 20-day trial
Researchers aren't sure why the deoxyribose gel stimulates longer and thicker hair growth in mice
the team did notice an increase in blood vessels and skin cells
"The better the blood supply to the hair bulb, the larger its diameter and the more hair growth," the researchers write
If the deoxyribose gel also proves effective in humans
it could be used to treat alopecia or even stimulate hair
and eyebrow regrowth following chemotherapy
"This is a badly under-researched area, and hence new approaches are needed," write the authors
The current experiments were only conducted among male mice
but further research might find the use of these natural sugars could also work for female mice experiencing testosterone-driven alopecia
"The research we have done is very much early stage," said MacNeil
"but the results are promising and warrant further investigation."
The study was published in Frontiers in Pharmacology

Donald Trump took an awkward dig at his “first buddy” Elon Musk just days after the billionaire left the White House
The president was speaking in front of graduating students at the University of Alabama on Thursday when he boasted that the Tesla CEO—and his Silicon Valley colleagues—have started “kissing my a--.”
He made the comments during a wide-ranging speech in which he offered advice and received raucous cheers while describing his actions to crack down on transgender women in sports
But it was during a moment the president was talking about fixing a “broken system” when he took an unexpected dig at his DOGE pal
the more ferociously those with a vested interest in the past will resist you they want to resist,” Trump began
“You have to break the system a little bit and follow your own instincts
Trump then boasted about the types of “internet people” who vehemently opposed him during his first term who now support him—naming one billionaire in particular
“If you look at some of these internet people
and now they’re kissing my a--,” Trump said
Musk and Trump had publicly dissed each other years before their current partnership
the pair clashed after Musk suggested that Trump was too old to become the next U.S
president and that he needed to “sail into the sunset.”
claiming Musk would have gotten on his knees and “begged” for help
and while Trump generally speaks fondly of Musk
“Elon won’t go home. I can’t get rid of him,” Trump said in November 2024. “Until I don’t like him.”
He’s just not physically present as much as he was,” Wiles said

He posted a career-best 79.6 PFF grade in his final college season
and with the Panthers lacking a true starter alongside Tre’Von Moehrig
Given the uncertainty surrounding Derek Carr’s shoulder injury
the Saints could be in the market for a quarterback
There have also been whispers about upgrading the offensive line or adding help off the edge
Reinforcing the interior of the defensive line with a prospect like Walter Nolen — and hoping he develops more consistently than Bryan Bresee has through his first two seasons
Emeka Egbuka’s pro comparison in the PFF Draft Guide is Amon-Ra St. Brown
he could target Egbuka to boost a Bears offense that ranked 29th in slot receiving grade last season
Egbuka would also bring value as a willing blocker in Chicago’s retooled ground game
The 49ers already have superstar tight end George Kittle firmly entrenched in their offense
but it’s fair to wonder if Kyle Shanahan might consider adding Tyler Warren to form the league’s most intimidating 12-personnel package
Warren earned an elite 93.4 receiving grade in 2024 and brings the kind of physicality as a run blocker that would complement Kittle perfectly on the edge
who played a substantial amount last season
but they could seek an infusion of young talent to compete with them
Zabel’s versatility would give Indianapolis options as they look to sustain their traditionally strong offensive line
If Atlanta shocks the world and selects Colston Loveland, it could signal an eventual trade of Kyle Pitts
whose PFF grades have declined in each of the past three seasons
Loveland earned an elite 90.6 receiving grade at Michigan in 2024 while playing through a shoulder injury
he could offer not only a reliable receiving option but also improved blocking — a valuable asset for a team committed to a run-first identity
Booker’s pre-draft momentum has cooled following underwhelming athletic testing
He ranked fourth among qualified FBS guards in true pass-blocking grade last season at Alabama
showing the kind of reliability the Cardinals could use
Arizona currently projects to start Isaiah Adams — who posted just a 50.3 pass-blocking grade in 2024 — at right guard
Cincinnati ranked 27th in team rushing grade and 26th in yards after contact per attempt last season, highlighting a clear need for backfield help. North Carolina’s Omarion Hampton is a yards-after-contact machine who could provide the Bengals with much-needed offensive balance
With buzz growing around Hampton as a potential first-round pick
Cincinnati could be the team that makes that surprise move
If Will Johnson is still on the board when Seattle is on the clock, the Seahawks could give serious thought to addressing their secondary — even with clear needs on offense. Keeping Devon Witherspoon in the slot means finding another outside corner to pair with Tariq Woolen
While he has some lingering injury concerns
his 91.3 career coverage grade shows he’s capable of playing at an elite level when healthy
as Watts racked up 13 interceptions over the past two seasons
Most of the focus on Denver’s draft needs has centered on the offense, but cornerback could also be in play. Riley Moss earned just a 56.0 coverage grade last season and struggled in several high-profile matchups
Ole Miss’ Trey Amos brings versatility and physicality to the position and is coming off a career-best 85.6 coverage grade in 2024
The Steelers don’t lack deep threats with DK Metcalf and George Pickens on the roster
but their passing game could use more variety
Pittsburgh’s receivers ranked just 24th in yards after catch per reception last season
and adding a player like Luther Burden III would provide a much-needed spark
Burden ranked among the top four FBS wideouts in both yards after catch and missed tackles forced over the past two seasons
The Chargers got solid contributions from late-round picks Tarheeb Still and Cam Hart at cornerback last season and added Donte Jackson in free agency
A speedy zone coverage specialist like Maxwell Hairston could be an appealing option in Round 1
Hairston posted an excellent 81.0 coverage grade in Cover-3 and Quarters — the two coverages Los Angeles leans on most
After three underwhelming seasons, former first-rounder Quay Walker could be on the trade block during draft weekend. If Green Bay moves on, they'll need a new starter next to Edgerrin Cooper — and Knight could be a strong fit
His skill set as a weak-side linebacker pairs well with Cooper
especially after earning an elite 92.4 coverage grade over the past two seasons
Houston could use a consistent run-stuffer who thrives in even fronts, and Ohio State’s Tyleik Williams fits that mold
Williams ranked eighth among all qualified FBS defensive tackles with an 88.6 run-defense grade in 2024
while the Texans’ interior defensive line finished 28th in that same metric
but Williams’ skill set would align well with Houston’s defensive needs
While the Rams boast Defensive Rookie of the Year Jared Verse, they lack proven depth off the edge beyond him and Byron Young
would be a strong fit as an explosive stand-up rusher
having tallied 107 pressures and 21 sacks over the past two seasons
Adding Pearce would give Los Angeles another dynamic piece to bolster its already ascending defensive front
He may start as a passing-down specialist but has the tools to grow into an every-down contributor
Higgins’ ability to win in isolation would bring yet another dynamic element to an already dangerous offense
Buffalo has placed greater emphasis on the run game over the past two seasons, putting more pressure on the offensive line to perform. Left guard David Edwards
while right guard O’Cyrus Torrence has earned subpar grades in each of his first two seasons
Ohio State’s Donovan Jackson could help solidify the interior and usher in the next era of success up front for the Bills
Chiefs running backs ranked 30th in yards per carry and 31st in explosive runs last season, including the playoffs. While Isiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt provide toughness and physicality
Ohio State’s TreVeyon Henderson could inject much-needed explosiveness and pass-catching ability into the backfield
There have been rumors swirling about whether Dallas Goedert has played his final game in Philadelphia
he’ll be 31 by season’s end and entering the final year of his contract
Elijah Arroyo’s explosive athleticism could intrigue the Eagles — his 16.9 yards per reception ranked second among qualified FBS tight ends in 2024

Astronomers have found a planet that orbits at an angle of 90 degrees around a rare pair of peculiar stars
This is the first time we have strong evidence for one of these ‘polar planets’ orbiting a stellar pair
The surprise discovery was made using the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope (VLT)
Several planets orbiting two stars at once
like the fictional Star Wars world Tatooine
These planets typically occupy orbits that roughly align with the plane in which their host stars orbit each other
There have previously been hints that planets on perpendicular
orbits around binary stars could exist: in theory
and planet-forming discs on polar orbits around stellar pairs have been detected
we lacked clear evidence that these polar planets do exist
“I am particularly excited to be involved in detecting credible evidence that this configuration exists,” says Thomas Baycroft
a PhD student at the University of Birmingham
who led the study published today in Science Advances
orbits a pair of young brown dwarfs — objects bigger than gas-giant planets but too small to be proper stars
The two brown dwarfs produce eclipses of one another as seen from Earth
making them part of what astronomers call an eclipsing binary
This system is incredibly rare: it is only the second pair of eclipsing brown dwarfs known to date
and it contains the first exoplanet ever found on a path at right angles to the orbit of its two host stars
as well as being on a polar orbit is rather incredible and exciting,” says co-author Amaury Triaud
a professor at the University of Birmingham
The astronomers observed the orbital path of the two stars in 2M1510 being pushed and pulled in unusual ways, leading them to infer the existence of an exoplanet with its strange orbital angle. “We reviewed all possible scenarios, and the only one consistent with the data is if a planet is on a polar orbit about this binary,” says Baycroft [1]
in the sense that our observations were not collected to seek such a planet
what is possible in the fascinating Universe we inhabit.”
[1] In the new Science Advances study
2M1510 or 2M1510 AB are the names given to the eclipsing binary of two brown dwarfs
The same system is known to have a third star
The study shows this third star is too far away to cause the orbital disturbances
This research was presented in a paper to appear in Science Advances titled “Evidence for a polar circumbinary exoplanet orbiting a pair of eclipsing brown dwarfs” (https://doi.org/10.1126/sciadv.adu0627)

Sugar substitute found in supermarkets can kill drug-resistant bacteria and help antibiotics work better
the artificial sweetener used in diet foods like yoghurts and sugar-free drinks
can kill multidrug-resistant bacteria – including one of the world’s most dangerous pathogens
“Antibiotic resistance is one of the major threats to modern medicine,” said Professor Ronan McCarthy, who led the research at Brunel University of London’s Antimicrobial Innovations Centre
“Procedures such as tooth extractions and cancer treatment often rely on antibiotics to prevent or treat infection
But doctors are increasingly facing cases where the drugs no longer work.”
antimicrobial resistance (AMR) killed 1.27 million people globally
with resistant infections contributing to nearly 5 million deaths
Drug-resistant bacteria such as Acinetobacter baumannii
which causes life-threatening infections in people with a weakened immune system
linked to chronic lung infections and sepsis
are on the World Health Organization’s list of top-priority pathogens
we’ve identified a novel antimicrobial – saccharin,” Prof McCarthy said
“Saccharin breaks the walls of bacterial pathogens
causing them to distort and eventually burst
overwhelming their resistance systems.”
Saccharin has been part of the human diet for longer than 100 years. While it has been extensively tested for safety in people, little was known about its effect on bacteria – until now with this study in EMBO Molecular Medicine
The international team found that saccharin both stops bacterial growth and disrupts DNA replication and stops the bacteria from forming biofilms – sticky
protective layers that help them survive antibiotics
They also created a saccharin-loaded hydrogel wound dressing that
outperformed market-leading silver-based antimicrobial dressings currently used in hospitals
“This is very exciting,” Prof McCarthy added
“Normally it takes billions of dollars and decades to develop a new antibiotic
But here we have a compound that’s already widely used
and it not only kills drug-resistant bacteria but also makes existing antibiotics more effective
“Artificial sweeteners are found in many diet and sugar-free foods
We discovered that the same sweeteners you have with your coffee or in a ‘sugar-free’ drink could make some of the world’s most dangerous bacteria easier to treat.”
The World Health Organization has warned that the world is heading toward a ‘post-antibiotic era’
where common everyday infections could once again become deadly
Overuse of antibiotics in medicine and agriculture has accelerated resistance
and new antibiotics have been slow to arrive
“This has created a dangerous situation,” said Prof McCarthy
“We urgently need new drugs to treat resistant infections – and saccharin could represent a new therapeutic approach with exciting promise.”

MIAMI -- Mercedes wunderkind rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli beat the McLaren drivers to pole position for the sprint race in Miami and in doing so became the youngest pole sitter in any Formula 1 format
beat championship leader Oscar Piastri by 0.045 seconds to top a competitive F1 session for the first time in his young career
Antonelli replaced seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes this year and has already been tipped for great things
Come on," Antonelli said over the radio after securing the pole spot
and I felt confident going into qualifying," Antonelli said
I put basically everything together and it was nice that it all came very nicely and I'm really happy to get the first pole
"Tomorrow it's going to be nice to start on the front row
It's going to be a bit of a different feeling
but I really cannot wait for tomorrow and to see how we can do in the sprint and then in the qualifying as well."
The previous youngest ever pole sitter was Sebastian Vettel at the age of 21 years and 73 days in 2008 at the Italian Grand Prix with Toro Rosso
Mercedes boss Toto Wolff said it did not matter what kind of pole it was
It's not whether it's a pole in only the sprint
he's done it and he's quickest," said the Austrian
Rudy Carezzevoli/Getty ImagesAntonelli will start ahead of Piastri and Lando Norris
"We can still fight from there in the sprint tomorrow
"We've got a bit more pace to unlock hopefully
I'll try to make up a spot in the sprint before we get stuck into where the big points are."
New father Max Verstappen
who missed the media day on Thursday because of the birth of his first daughter
qualified fourth ahead of Antonelli's teammate George Russell
Red Bull will have only one driver fighting at the top end of the field in the sprint

Nico Hulkenberg took an impressive 11th position for the Sauber team -- Tsunoda's elimination from SQ1 was the only major surprise otherwise
The opening session featured a furious radio message from Alpine driver Jack Doohan
Doohan complained that his hopes of progressing to SQ1 had been ruined by the angle he was released from the garage ahead of his final run
Doohan lost valuable time while trying to realign his car on its turn into the pit lane as teammate Pierre Gasly emerged from the pit lane next to him

Donny Osmond made a surprise appearance Wednesday night at BYU Women’s Conference near his home and captivated an audience of 8,254 women and girls with his singing voice and his witness of Jesus Christ
The 67-year-old star sang “Any Dream Will Do” from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at the Marriott Center on BYU’s campus to amplify a message about Joseph given by his boyhood friend
first counselor in the Young Men General Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
Brother Wilcox first brought out to the stage Osmond’s wife
He had them play the roles of the family of Joseph’s father
whom God gave the new name Israel and whose family became the 12 tribes of Israel
“The only thing that could have made this better is if we’d had the person who’d played the role of Joseph in the musical 2,000 times,” Brother Wilcox said with a big smile
Then Osmond walked on stage in the coat of many colors he’d worn for all those performances and the 1999 movie
described his patriarchal blessing and spoke with Brother Wilcox
who asked him what he’d learned about God’s love as he played Joseph for six years

A gun control measure in Hawaii failed by a narrow vote this week, after several state Democrats crossed the aisle to vote against it
The defeat of Senate Bill 401
which sought to ban assault-style rifles in the state
shows an unexpected division in a party typically unified on gun control
The vote marks a rare instance of Democratic lawmakers breaking with their party on a high-profile gun measure
especially as Democratic Governor Josh Green was prepared to sign the bill if it passed through the Senate
Assault rifles such as AR-15s and AK-47s are the types of guns which have been used in some of the most high-profile school shootings
although assault pistols are not legal in the state
the state Senate blocked the bill after some Democrats raised concerns about its effects on gun owners
who is typically a supporter of gun control measures
said the bill would criminalize existing owners of assault rifles
we decide to label them as criminals and that to me
it's unethical and should not be tolerated by this body."
Senate Judiciary chair Karl Rhoads disagreed with this take on the bill saying it allowed for "grandfathering."
He supported the bill saying its prohibition on the number of bullets a gun can fire at a time would limit fatalities in the event of a shooting
and would allow the police to get to the scene before more people could be killed
The bill also made it illegal for guns to be given to anyone who did not purchase them directly. The gun used in the most recent fatal school shooting at Florida State University did not belong to the chief suspect
The bill failed in a 13-12 vote, which not only went against typical Democratic positions, but also countered Hawaiian polling which shows 75 percent of Hawaiians support a ban on military-grade rifles
a volunteer with the Hawaii chapter of the gun control advocacy group Moms Demand Action
lawmakers had an opportunity to right a wrong—instead they doubled down by allowing the weapon of choice for mass shooters to continue to be sold across our islands
we'll ask ourselves what could have we done to prevent it
Senate lawmakers caved to the pressure of the gun lobby and our communities will pay the price."
Democrat State Senator Joy Buenaventura said on the Senate floor: "But we are actually making [gun owners] criminals by possession of magazines that we had legalized before they bought it
While Hawaii Democrats voted against this gun control measure, Democrats in the Senate in Washington DC introduced a federal Assault Weapons Ban of 2025. This bill will likely not go through as the Republicans control both chambers of Congress

In total, six out of the 12 teams that reached the playoffs did so for the first time. While not making their playoff debut, the Clemson Tigers returned for the first time since 2020. However, Clemson fell to the Texas Longhorns
losing 38-24 in the first round of the playoffs.
Once considered a consistent national championship contender
Clemson won two national championships in 2016 and 2018 and reached several other national championship games since the College Football Playoff era began in 2014
Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney during the fourth quarter at Memorial Stadium
On "The Paul Finebaum Show," SEC Network analyst Paul Finebaum demonstrated confidence in the Tigers heading into 2025. "I think Clemson is in the national championship race," Finebaum said
"I think they're finally back to that."
Clemson's potential resurgence as a serious contender may not surprise many. However, Finebaum has historically been critical of the Tigers. He previously stated, "We talk about the top, the best," Finebaum said. "Clemson's not really that relevant anymore
and they got ushered right out of the playoff."
Clemson's confidence heading into the upcoming season largely stems from its impressive roster of returning players. The Tigers rank No. 1 in the nation for returning production
they are the only team in college football to achieve this milestone
Clemson will have an early chance to demonstrate its abilities when it faces LSU in its season opener at home on August 30

the market is poised to move higher.
A contributing factor is reports that China is assessing the possibility of trade talks with the U.S.
the first indication that negotiations could begin between the two sides
We view this as constructive and while we may be hopeful about what comes next
we continue to think these talks will be measured in weeks not days and that the ultimate details will be what matter most
we will see a shift in the March quarter earnings season for retailers and related companies and we strongly suspect they will discuss the impact of tariffs on their businesses following reports of significant drops in cargo from China
We could very well see them join the ranks of companies preparing to raise prices
another sign that some inflation pressures aren’t likely to abate near-term
the re-jiggering we expected in consensus S&P 500 earnings is happening for this year but
Our two cents is that recent economic data
including the 1Q 2025 GDP contraction and renewed inflation pressures seen in the April ISM Manufacturing PMI and what we are likely to see in the corresponding Services data next week
is helping spur the White House in trade talks with China as well as the other 17 key trading partners for the U.S
as the initial dominos fall with the first few announced trade deals
we’ll have a better sense of headwinds for the economy
While the market may respond with a sigh of relief or a dash of renewed hopium
but also recognize the potential for fits and starts with trade talks between the two countries
we will begin to examine or in some cases re-examine Portfolio candidates that have been hard hit in recent weeks and stand to benefit from either much lower tariffs or their removal.

it’s the best match of his MotoGP career with a manufacturer.”
Miller entered MotoGP on a Honda then spent two years as a factory Ducati rider
culminating as the teammate to Pecco Bagnaia who ended the manufacturer’s 15-year wait for a title in 2022
Miller then spent two seasons with KTM who
made a quick decision to dispense with the Australian last year
But Miller’s fifth-place finish at the Circuit of the Americas was the perfect reply to any leftover critics
He endured a more difficult weekend last time out in Spain
failing to finish either on Saturday or Sunday
Feted for his experience and ability to develop a project
his inclusion at Pramac - who provide Yamaha with double the riders and data compared to 2024 - is a key cog in their improving situation
Yamaha are developing a V4 engine in the background but the immediate focus is on a better inline-4
Miller and co tested an updated version of the inline-4 last week in Jerez
The Yamaha quartet return to action next weekend in Le Mans equipped with the new engine
having seen factory rider Fabio Quartararo take pole position and a podium in Jerez

Each of us will have a list of games we’re desperate to see announced
For me, The Last of Us Part III easily tops that list, but for you horror lovers, I’m imagining it’s Resident Evil 9 that you’re craving
although it hasn’t received anything in the way of a full reveal
Instead, Capcom simply confirmed its existence in July of last year
The latest instalment is believed to star both Leon S
Kennedy and Jill Valentine as playable protagonists which sounds pretty dang exciting
although I urge you to take this information with a pinch of salt for now
It’s been four years since the last mainline instalment in the franchise
four years split Village and the previous mainline instalment
so it stands to reason that Resi 9 could drop anytime now
Capcom seems to be gearing up for a full reveal
unveiling a classic teaser eagle-eyed fans have recently spotted
Horror fans will adore the new Until Dawn film
Capcom has teased its next Resi instalment via the use of roman numerals - and that is once again the case when it comes to Resi 9
A video was recently launched to celebrate Resident Evil 4 Remake reaching 10 million players
a peculiar street sign could be seen featuring a number of wooden panels
The most observant of fans noticed that from the right angle
Could a reveal take place during this summer’s Summer Games Fest or Gamescom’s Opening Night Live
or perhaps let it air during a State of Play
and fans are hyped that a new era is almost upon us
“Definitely about that time. Capcom now is your chance to bring back Jill or Claire or any other forgotten main characters,” wrote Reddit user Vorstar92
“I hope it will be classic third person view,” added Kiboune
