ARLINGTON, Texas — Mariners right-hander George Kirby touched 97.8 mph and needed just 42 pitches to get through three innings in his first rehab start with Triple-A Tacoma on Sunday afternoon in Las Vegas
who was shut down in early March with shoulder inflammation, threw 33 strikes
He allowed a solo homer with one out in the third inning
The Mariners have not announced a definitive plan for Kirby’s rehab assignment
but he’s expected to make at least one more start for Tacoma
with a potential return to the Mariners rotation sometime in the second half of May
Randy Arozarena left Sunday’s game against the Texas Rangers in with “a little bit of a hamstring thing,” manager Dan Wilson said
But Wilson quickly added he’s not concerned
“It’s nothing serious,” he said
A Root Sports camera caught Arozarena trying to stretch out his leg near first base after he singled in the sixth inning
Rookie Rhylan Thomas replaced Arozarena in left field in the bottom half of the inning
The Mariners have been hammered with injuries early in the season
They’re effectively down to their fourth- and fifth-string right fielders with Victor Robles (shoulder)
Luke Raley (oblique) and Dylan Moore (hip) on the injured list
Robles is not expected back until sometime after the All-Star break
Moore has gone through pregame workouts with trainers at Globe Life Field in each of the past two days
and he sounded optimistic that he’ll be able to return from the IL when he’s eligible on Tuesday

A Bernese Mountain Dog had a ruff day last week
It somehow got stuck on some cold, wet rocks at Tacoma Chinese Reconciliation Park. Someone called Tacoma Police
and officers were able to gently lift the dog to safety
The dog posted a thank-you message on the Tacoma Police Department Facebook page
these amazing humans in uniforms showed up,” the dog wrote
“They told me everything was gonna be okay and helped me up off the rocks like true heroes

Tacoma’s Antique Row has long been an oasis for shoppers near and far with a strong appetite for antique wares
In our sister publication South Sound Business' latest issue
it's putting a spotlight on some of the unique — and resilient — haunts helping demonstrate the one-of-a-kind eclecticism that continues to make it an enduring Tacoma fixture
Stepping into the stores on Antique Row is akin to stepping back in time
albeit into an ambiguous period that can include artifacts from the late 1800s through near-present day
One shop on the row, however, has a very defined era. Though slightly minimalist by today’s standards in layout and design, S.I.P.S., or Shop in Past Styles

Though Perez’s core product offerings are extremely niche
he said he already has amassed a small and growing audience
and he works hard to find a little bit of everything to do with the ’90s to appeal to anyone who walks into his store
“It is a very interesting market because a lot of people are very interested in it,” Perez said
“And I do love (appealing) to people who like what I like

Perez asserts that the decade has a special place in his heart
“I don’t know (how people feel) about me selling this stuff because I can’t really say I’m a ’90s kid,” he said
so I was surrounded by a lot of ’90s things like TV shows
he remembers buying character shirts from places like Hot Topic or JCPenney and being teased for his clothing choices and feeling pressured to fit in with his peers
“I want to transition to being a coffee shop at some point
My goal is … three-fifths coffee shop and two-fifths clothing,” he said
noting that the menu items probably would be pop culture-based
“It’s always been a dream of mine; even before fashion

Representatives from the Ports of Tacoma and Seattle issued a warning on Thursday that the most significant effects of President Donald Trump’s trade war are anticipated to emerge in the latter half of May
with consumers likely to feel the consequences
The Port of Seattle has seen a recent uptick in shipments as importers rush to beat the tariff deadline
Commissioner Ryan Calkins stated on Wednesday that a dramatic 40% decline in container traffic is expected in the coming weeks
which will have widespread repercussions throughout the shipping industry
Officials from ports along the West Coast cautioned that longshoremen
and warehouse workers will face reduced labor hours
while retail consumers may soon encounter empty shelves
The Trump administration has imposed a staggering 145% tariff on Chinese goods
prompting Beijing to retaliate with a 125% tariff on American exports
Port officials noted that many importers are opting to delay shipments at their points of origin
due to the uncertainty of the current trade environment
port commissioners are actively exploring alternative markets that could foster trade relationships with Washington
aiming to mitigate the impact of reduced trade with China
Calkins mentioned that the Port of Seattle is currently negotiating with countries such as Vietnam
while also considering new export opportunities with growers in the Inland Northwest
including the possibility of shipping renewable energy infrastructure
hinge on achieving some level of stability in the global market
Washington State’s economy is heavily reliant on trade
with countless workers and families depending on the efficiency of its ports and access to international markets
Workers at the Port of Tacoma are already experiencing a decline in ship arrivals and work hours
leading to a reduced need for longshoremen
which is also impacting local agricultural producers
Market forecasts suggest that these challenges are only the beginning

— Investigators arrested a man who is accused of shooting two people
was charged Wednesday morning with first-degree murder
According to a police report, Miller had a dispute with three people at a smoke shop and told then them to drive down the street and pull over.
Miller was upset over a comment one of the victims made on social media, and an argument ensued, police said.
Investigators said witnesses reported the fight escalated when Miller pulled out a gun and shot a man, identified in court papers as "Q.S.," and then shot a woman who was with him. Multiple people told police Miller was the shooter, the report states.
Investigators found Miller was recently arrested in Lakewood and had prior felony convictions. Lakewood police assisted Tacoma police in finding Miller at an apartment complex, and he was arrested.
Miller denied involvement in the shooting and claimed he was in Seattle at the time.
At a hearing Wednesday afternoon, a judge set Miller's bail at $2 million.

SEATTLE — Local Port Commissioners say new trade data just out Wednesday shows a drastic drop in cargo shipments scheduled to arrive at West Coast ports in May from Asia
that schedule data includes the Port of Seattle and the Port of Tacoma
During a Zoom call with Port of Seattle Commissioner Ryan Calkins and Port of Tacoma Commissioner Dick Marzano
Managing Members of the Northwest Seaport Alliance both raised concerns about higher unemployment and higher inflation associated with the tariffs
"This is like chaos messing everything up," said Abin Nellams
a longshore crane operator at the Port of Seattle
He said he hasn't seen anything like the tariff trickledown now making its debut in the Port of Seattle and the Port of Tacoma
and he told me he's struck by how quickly and 'immediate' the impact to the port has been
"We have like a schedule of ships that come here and they're just not coming here," said Nellams
Commissioner Calkins confirmed he's seen it too in recent days
there are fewer containers on each of those vessels," said Calkins
The Northwest Seaport Alliance Managing members say year-to-year numbers on vessel calls were up for March
Calkins said the shipments were up by 18.4% over last year at the same time
the numbers are expected to drop more than twofold
it's about 40% lower than what would be normal for this time of year," said Calkins
I asked what impact less cargo at the port they thought would have on consumers
'We want to be really careful that we're not creating any sort of undue panic
we're not going to see empty store shelves in our grocery stores or in vital needs for our families
in addition to clothing and furniture are likely to be impacted
"You're going to see unemployment tick up
you're going to see inflation tick up
you're going to see a lot of families being hurt," said Marzano
"We're not going to need as many longshore workers unloading goods at the ports
We don't need as many truck drivers transporting the goods," said Calkins
KOMO News reached out to the Longshore Workers Union for comment
Marzano stressed the ports are open for business
we're still going to conduct business
the Northwest Seaport Alliance shared some additional Port Data:
"The NWSA s currently seeing higher yoy volumes
We saw an 18.4% increase in volumes in March across the gateway
partially driven by shippers advancing cargo before anticipated tariffs
In the last 30 days have seen a 7.3% increase in volume in Seattle alone
"We are additionally seeing more vessel calls yoy
with 3 more vessel calls in Q1 2025 than Q1 2024
and 1 more vessel call in the last 30-day period than the year before
"We currently (4/28) have 6 vessels at berth
"Both Commissioners stressed how supportive Congressional and state leaders have been ever since the trade war began and said their members are looking for new global trade gateways
Calkins said members are in South Korea in an effort to create new trade channels
the commissioner said a large portion of that is likely due to anticipatory buying - companies putting in orders long before Trump became president

— The city of Tacoma has seen a significant spike in homicide cases in the first four months of the year
After a fatal shooting Sunday night
the city has recorded ten homicides with 11 victims since the start of the year
the city had six homicides with six victims
“It’s not just the victim that it’s impacting - this is a ripple effect that impacts the families of everybody involved
and it impacts the community," said Officer Shelbie Boyd
three homicides have happened in the Salishan neighborhood alone
You’re going to jail when you get caught," said Sharon Taylor
who lives near the scene of Sunday's shooting
"You are wasting your life doing this to someone else
On April 12, a shooting claimed the life of 16-year-old Marco Teran near 42nd Street and Portland Avenue
A second person was also injured in the shooting
Tacoma School Board President Korey Strozier said in a social media post that Lockett and Teran were students of Tacoma Public Schools
mentors—to wrap around our young people," Storzier wrote
"It will take a coordinated effort to build a safety net strong enough to hold them
Let it be the moment we decide that silence is no longer an option
and neither is standing on the sidelines."
The victim of Sunday's shooting in Salishan hasn't been identified, though police said he was an adult male.
“It would seem these events don’t happen in a vacuum," Boyd told KOMO News
there are people who are having a mental health crisis
or things that are taking place before a violent crime takes place
and somebody is seeing and saying ‘that’s not right’
2025) - The Tacoma Rainiers (11-19) dropped fifth-straight with a 10-3 loss to the Las Vegas Aviators (20-10) on Thursday night at the Las Vegas Ballpark
Las Vegas jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning
Zack Gelof led off the frame with a single in his second rehab game for the Athletics
Logan Davidson followed with a walk before a sacrifice fly to right from Colby Thomas scored Gelof
Davidson continued the scoring in the bottom of the third inning with an RBI single to score Gelof who reached on his second single of the day before advancing on a wild pitch to put him in scoring position
the Aviators added two more in the bottom of the fifth inning
A double from Denzel Clark began the inning followed by a single from Drew Avans
Gelof hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Clarke ahead of an RBI single from Darell Hernaiz that capped off the frame
Willie MacIver launched a solo homer to right center in the bottom of the sixth to extend the lead to five
Spencer Packard put Tacoma on the board in the top of the seventh and put the Rainiers within reach
A walk from Jacob Nottingham followed by a bunt single from Colin Davis and a single from Jack Lopez would load the bases
Packard came through with a two-run single to center field to cut the deficit to three
Austin Shenton smoked his second homer of the series and fifth of the year to lead off the eighth inning
The solo shot out to center field put the Rainiers within two
Las Vegas sent ten to the plate scoring five runs on four hits
An RBI double from Denzel Clarke along with an RBI single from Drew Avans extended a 7-3 lead prior to a bases-loaded walk drawn by Darell Hernaiz that extended the lead to five
Colby Thomas capped off the scoring with a two-run single to center field that brought the score to 10-3 in favor of the Aviators
The Rainiers were set down in order with three ground outs after Tanner Dodson came in to close
Two cities in Washington state ranked among the "50 Cheapest Places to Retire Across America," according to a recent study by GOBankingRates
Spokane in Eastern Washington is the third-cheapest city for retirees in the United States
Tacoma in Western Washington ranks as the 33rd most affordable city for retirement
GOBankingRates stated that the rankings were based on an analysis of the 100 largest cities in the U.S
where seniors comprised at least 10% of the population
The study factored in the yearly retirement income needed to cover living costs such as housing
which means seeking new places to live where you can stretch your money further," according to the report
Here's more on the rankings and why these Washington locations ranked among the most affordable places in the U.S
Monthly expenses in Spokane averaged at $1,711
and its population of people 65 and older was 16.4%
The city was also assigned a "livability" score of 81, one of the highest in the study, partly based on data shared by AreaVibes
AreaVibes gives Spokane high marks for its cost of living
"The arts and culture scene in Spokane is dynamic and diverse
and art galleries," according to AreaVibes
"The Fox Theater and the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture are just a few of the cultural landmarks that showcase the city's commitment to the arts
Living in Spokane provides ample opportunities to engage with art
making it an exciting place to call home."
The median price of a home in Spokane County, which includes Spokane, was $437,300 in the fourth quarter of 2024, according to a report from the Washington Center for Real Estate Research at the University of Washington
The study calculated Tacoma's average monthly expenses at $1,819
Its population of people 65 and older stands at 14.6%
With a livability score of 78, AreaVibes noted that Tacoma's proximity to Seattle and Olympia contributes to its place as a "cultural and economic hub" in the region
"Prestigious institutions like the University of Washington Tacoma contribute to the city's academic and cultural vibrancy
fostering a thriving intellectual community," according to AreaVibes
"The arts and culture scene in Tacoma is dynamic and diverse
Tacoma is the county seat of Pierce County, where the median price of a home was $571,800 in the fourth quarter of 2024, according to the Washington Center for Real Estate Research report

Toyota fighting for its place in the mid-size truck segment
The 2025 Tacoma TRD Pro lands more than a few jabs
Thirty years ago, Toyota launched the first-generation Tacoma. That summer, Car and Driver published an epic five-truck test in Baja
Marty Padgett observed that “Toyota knows a thing or two about compact trucks—after all
five generations of them have built a bullet proof reputation and earned powerful loyalty among owners
The Tacoma is the sixth version of the basic small truck (but only the first to carry a name)
and it’s as comfortable and neatly trimmed as an Avalon.”
dinged for ride quality and a lackluster appearance
What a difference 30 years makes; the Tacoma has since cemented its reputation as a powerhouse within its segment
outselling its competitors by a multiplying factor of two or three
Even more notable is that it did so with a truck that was already six years into its life cycle
it’s easy to become a victim of your own success
Toyota sunset the third-generation Taco’ (first launched in late 2015) and introduced a new truck for the 2024 model year
The fourth-gen truck rides on Toyota’s TNGA-F platform
which now underpins all of the brand’s body-on-frame vehicles (Land Cruiser
and new hardware includes a hybrid engine and a fancy multi-link suspension for the model’s upper trim levels
Toyota fans generally prefer “proven and reliable” to “new and improved,” so many diehard Tacoma fans eyed these upgrades with caution
Their concerns mounted when reports surfaced of the truck’s new eight-speed automatic transmission failing
but enough to light up the forums and message boards—an environment where Tacoma lore and passion have been cultivated for more than two decades
Toyota issued a technical service bulletin to its dealers to address specific trouble codes and offered to replace already-broken transmissions with new ones
We hadn’t gotten behind the seat of the fourth-gen Tacoma since associate editor Nate Petroelje’s first drive last spring
an overlanding variant that joins the TRD Pro in the Tacoma’s adventure-focused trim taxonomy
Nate’s time in the TRD Pro was mostly off-road
we made sure to mix in plenty of on-road driving
How about a road trip from Ann Arbor to the Soo Locks in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula
The 2025 Tacoma TRD Pro builds on the fourth-gen’s freshman year
Items introduced for this year included little bits like red front tow hooks
Our $66,410 test truck was a 4×4 double cab dressed in Ice Cap white paint and a black roof
Throw in the 18-inch TRD black alloy wheels shod in 33-inch Goodyears
and the beast looked more prerunner from Baja or Glamis than late-model midsizer
the TRD Pro gets an additional two-inch lift up front and a 1.5-inch hike in the back
Accessories included here were a door panel scuff protector ($135)
The hybrid powertrain backs up that appearance with plenty of grunt under the hood
While many of our readers recoil at the mention of batteries and electric motors
I’m here to tell you that concerns are misplaced
The i-FORCE MAX 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine has a 48-hp electric motor integrated into the eight-speed automatic transmission
and the net output 326 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque
That’s up from the non-hybridized engine
which only has 278 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque
Tow capacity does dip from 6500 pounds in non-hybrid Tacomas to 6000 pounds
the horses are there in force when called upon
“The older Tacoma’s drivetrain was a bit of a dog,” Nate recalls
“Passing required plenty of forethought and a stiff kick to drop multiple gears and summon the twist needed to sidestep slower traffic.” The new Taco has plenty of spice to make quick work of road snails
Fuel mileage only gets a minor bump from the hybrid system
up from 21 miles per gallon on the base model Tacoma to 24 miles per gallon
the Tacoma doesn’t require constant tiny steering corrections to drive it straight
and the cabin is plenty comfy over long distances
TRD-tuned FOX internal bypass shocks sit at each corner
joining red anodized control arms up front and remote shock reservoirs in the rear
There’s also a pair of Fox’s internal floating piston bump-stops out back
I’ve long been a champion of city living with a mid-size truck
Compared with my last-generation Chevy Colorado
maneuvering the wider Tacoma was just as simple
albeit even easier with the MultiTerrain monitor projecting the camera feed on the big 14-inch display while parking
That larger display is part of the included Audio Multimedia Upgrade package
which swaps out the base eight-inch infotainment screen
(It costs $845 as a standalone option on them mid-pack TRD Off-Road trim.) The big screen complements the high-end look and feel of the TRD Pro
but physical controls win the day; tactility is off the charts thanks to chunky switches and capstone-like knobs
and dash are dressed in varied materials with red stitching
The leather-wrapped heated steering wheel feels divine to the touch
his truck comes equipped with a funky set of front seats
The leatherette-wrapped heated and ventilated buckets come with their own set of dampers (!) on the seatbacks that I can report a solid job of absorbing impacts from Michigan potholes
The so-called “IsoDynamic” seats are a bit gimmicky
and they come at the cost of rear seat leg room
which is virtually nonexistent due to the seats’ added thickness
the type of thinking we like to see from a brand trying to creatively push the envelope
JBL’s automotive stereo systems never disappoint
The 10-speaker system is totally up to the task of rocking out
I enjoyed the ability to pop out the mobile Bluetooth speaker on the dash
It was perfect for roadside picnic tunes or for jazzing up a bare-bones box hotel
There are multiple types of outlets in the back of the truck
and the trick tailgate sports an additional open button mounted in the taillight
“This expression of the Tacoma is a far cry from the simple truck that C/D met in 1995.” Well
and the eye-watering price tag reflects how truck buyers today are so willing to pay for luxuries
While a new base Tacoma can still be had for 30-some thousand bucks
our test truck’s $66,410 roughly doubles that expense
consider that the Colorado ZR2 and Ford Raptor Ranger both cost less than $60,000
What did I say before about things staying the same
Here’s another line from that five-truck comparo in 1995:
“Our Tacoma was hamstrung by an as-tested quote of $27,562
admittedly decked out [in options] like a Park Avenue condo but no more so than the substantially cheaper Chevrolet and Ford trucks.” For those keeping score at home
But now it might finally be worth the cost
Toyota is hitting new levels of refinement with the TRD Pro version
which sacrifices little in terms of everyday comfort while bristling with off-road kit and looking the business
You still have to pay dearly for it up front
but it may soften the blow to remember that the Tacoma is as well known for longevity as it is for resale value
Would we place it last against the tricked-out Frontier Pro-4X
Highs: A pleasure to drive on- and off-road
Visual appeal of a Baja-bound prerunner with a handsome interior to boot
Lows: $65K for a mid-size truck is a horse pill
Transmission issues related to TSB might blast a hole in an otherwise bulletproof reputation
most capable Tacoma doesn’t come cheap
but we expect plenty of people to pay happily
I have loved Toyota trucks but $65-$66k for a Taco is too much
ZR2 Colorado is still the best deal out there for off road
Please don’t tell me that bro-dozer light bar is standard
Guys will replace that right away with the brightest non DOT compliant light bar possible
And yes guys run searingly bright light bars here all the time with seemingly no legal consequences
The reason to buy a Tacoma is it’s the only truck available with a manual transmission
I still find it difficult to comprehend why no one else sells a truck will a manual
Nice truck but I think I’ll just have to keep 95 Tacoma 4×4 with 250k on the clock
The mental gymnastics the typical buyer would have to perform to justify this price is really something
Lots of electronics/hybrid crap and systems to fail
Stupid front seats that hurt already limited back seat room
may I add one more to your list: appalling towing capacity

SCENE PHOTOS | Semi-truck crash, cleanup on I-5 in Tacoma
The driver of the semi was killed in the crash
Washington State Patrol Trooper John Dattilo said
The driver was unable to get out of the truck after the crash and has not been identified
Dattilo said the semi-truck hit the center barrier
A light pole fell across the northbound lanes and debris from the crash was scattered across both sides of the freeway
WSDOT crews worked for hours making repairs to the center divider
Traffic was diverted to off-ramps and drivers were asked to "postpone your travel plan or take alternate routes."
A loader moved debris into an industrial-sized dumpster
but a 6-mile backup was reported on northbound I-5 due to the closure
WSDOT crews were able to reopen several southbound lanes before the final southbound lane reopened in the early afternoon
Crews were able to clear the northbound lanes of debris and reopen all lanes by 1:20 p.m

Police investigate a Tacoma double shooting
Tacoma city leaders are expressing concern over a recent spike in homicides among young people
with four killings involving individuals 18 and under recorded since January
twice as many compared to this time last year
Violence has been particularly severe in the Eastside neighborhood of Salishan
where three shootings have been reported since April 20
the city has seen 10 homicides—two more than what was reported this time last year
Janette Simon, general manager of the Salishan Association, told The News Tribune that the organization is working with the Tacoma Police Department (TPD) to schedule a town hall meeting to support neighbors and address concerns
“The Salishan Association stands with the community during this difficult time and acknowledges the fear and grief that these incidents have caused,” Simon told The News Tribune
“We would like to emphasize the importance of community dialogue and support to address these issues and promote safety.”
TPD said they have seen a spike in youth-related violence in recent years
with young people being both victims and perpetrators of crimes
we’re committed to addressing it with every tool available,” Tacoma police officer Shelbie Boyd told The News Tribune
it’s the intervention and then the prevention of it
and there are some meetings taking place.”
police don’t have any information indicating that the three shootings in the Salishan neighborhood are linked

Tacoma families rallied together to put an end to the youth gun violence that happens all too often
crowds gathered in front of First Creek Middle School to show kids and teens that adults are there to support and guide them
“We want all those kids are affected to know
but anytime they want to need a shoulder or need an ear
we’re going to be there,” said Game Time Director Darren De Leon
Game Time
They want to make sure young people know this community supports them
“Give them that mentor that they can always feel like they can open up to talk to
just being that extra person there for the youth,” said Game Time Director David Stewart
“It’s okay to not be running the streets like you’re gonna have to miss out on some fun so you can level up in life honestly,” she said
The crowd took to the Eastside neighborhood streets
where much of the violence has taken place
“Young people have always had access to gun
I think what is probably most concerning for our youth is that our youth don’t have access to caring adults,” said Antonio McLemore
Community Center Supervisor with Parks Tacoma
McLemore says simply being present for young people can make the difference
“When caring adults get involved and they start putting their heads together to help people resolve problems and so that they don’t have to escalate and come to violence,” he said

An Irish woman visiting her sick father in Ireland is now among the newest detainees locked up at an ICE facility in Tacoma
TACOMA, Wash. - An Irish woman has been detained at the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma after her family says she recently returned from Ireland
"She's been in there for six days
and she still doesn't actually have a hearing," said Orla Holladay
Holladay is Ward's younger sister who created this GoFundMe for Ward's legal expenses while she is locked up
Cliona Ward is a green card holder and has been living in Santa Cruz
Holladay says Ward was escorting their stepmother to Ireland to visit their father who is battling dementia
Holladay says her sister was questioned by customs about a drug conviction in 2007 that Holladay says had been dismissed and vacated
She says her sister was bringing sealed paperwork to an administrative meeting in April but was arrested at San Francisco International Airport and sent to Tacoma
"My sister's story is a story of success
of a woman who had struggled in the past with addiction
and she was picked up for drug possession," said Holladay
"[Cliona] went through extensive rehabilitation to vacate these crimes."
Immigration experts say they've seen a big difference in the way green card holders are treated when traveling in and out of the United States
"We've heard of so many stories in just these 100 days of folks who may not have any issues before," said Jen Chen
Jen Chan specializes in immigration and is a member of Ryan
"These days it's gotten a little more shaky in terms of who is being targeted and who is not," said Chen
Chen advises green card holders to check in with an immigration attorney before engaging in international travel
"CBP has a wide reach of accessing people's criminal records
so even if you were charged but not convicted
these are what you want to be extra weary of these days
because you never know what consequences you might face upon trying to re-enter where you call home," said Chen
Holladay says no hearing has been set for her sister and an immigration attorney has told them it could take up to four months for a hearing date
"I want to caution people out there right now who are green card holders
I want to save anybody else from having to go through this hell," said Holladay
