School's out forever at the East Liberty Schoolhouse in Green
but thanks to four people it is once again bustling with life
Kyle Oberlin and Steve and Madelyn Whitt brought together their collective expertise to open The Industry
an eye-catching restaurant offering knife-and-fork meals as well as hand-crafted cocktails
the East Liberty Schoolhouse is one of two known existing Romanesque Revival district schoolhouses in Ohio
The building has been used as a schoolhouse
auto storage facility and furniture store over the years
the schoolhouse was moved 500 feet north of its original location in order to prevent its demolition
The interior of the schoolhouse was stripped down to its original floors
walls and ceiling before building out the kitchen
Madelyn was the mastermind behind the refreshing ambiance diners are quickly immersed in upon arrival
The Industry's interior is adorned with twinkling light fixtures and wall murals
the largest of which is modeled after Michelangelo's fresco
some of the restaurant's best-selling appetizers are its deviled eggs
which are made with brown sugar bourbon glazed pork belly
seared halibut and the East Liberty burger — a tallow-basted burger served with caramelized onions
But the must-try on the menu is its Pistachio tiramisu
Oberlin became so obsessed with it during a trip to Italy last year that after returning
he made it over and over until he had successfully duplicated the recipe
It was the one dish he insisted go on the menu
Oberlin's obsession doesn't seem quite so far fetched
but there's a nice crunch from the pistachios on top
savory or salty fillings and wrapped in dried seaweed
But The Industry's take on the dish is like none I've seen before
The base is two blocks of pan-seared sticky rice topped with a thick piping of avocado
The Industry is serving close to 1,000 people each week
but that number is likely to grow once the patio is open
"Being able to actually share with the public what we've been putting so much work and time and money into is kind of exciting for us," said Oberlin
"We hope that the community shares our excitement."

the restaurant's most popular menu item has been its ćevapi

a Balkan cheese spread similar to clotted cream
the small sausages are flavorful and moist and pair well with the mild cheese
but melts in the mouth similar to cream cheese
some of the most popular Balkan varieties have been their cookie assortments and shepherd head cake
Both desserts are made by co-owner Sladjana Pesevic
The business's other three co-owners are Sladjana's husband Miso

and that's just what my food was at the new Zakee Mediterranean Street Food
which opened March 10 in Akron's Merriman Valley
is owned by Khaled "Kenny" and Shadia Jaffal
operated with the help of two of their children
This is the second restaurant the Palestinian family has owned in the Akron area
They sold Cheezy's Mac & Cheese in Cuyahoga Falls in October after owning it for about two years
the Jaffals are focusing on the foods of their home country
That includes customizable pitas or wraps ($8.99) and bowls ($11.99) with unlimited toppings and sauces
are falafel or shish tawook (marinated chicken) for $3 or shish kabob (cooked-to-order
The cook behind all this deliciousness is Shadia
"My dad can't open a restaurant without my mom," said Laila
I sampled her falafel — the best falafel I've ever had — fresh out of the pan
It was warm and oh so crispy on the outside
and I had to rhapsodize to Shadia how much I loved it
"I would never eat my falafel not fresh," Laila said
The restaurant is also proud to offer vegan
vegetarian and gluten-free items on Zakee's menu
Zakee is housed in the former space for the soul food-Jamaican restaurant Flavor Grille
The Jafees have redesigned the interior and added wall art in Mediterranean colors of blue
a Palestinian dessert of sweet cheese and shredded phyllo dough
topped with pistachios and served with simple syrup on the side
which Laila recommended heating up at home

Bubble snow ($4.99 for a regular) was new to me
so I had to taste this treat that's similar to a smoothie but milkier
I went for bubble snow with vanilla ice cream

choosing black raspberry ice cream wrapped in a waffle and served in a paper cone with an Oreo cookie

Meet Finley Tallmadge and Rebecca Serati: two first-year Binghamton University accounting students and best friends since childhood
they followed each other from elementary to high school
even switching districts at one point so they could stay in the same classes
they click so well they can finish each other’s sentences
when it came time to choose a college and begin charting their career paths
is it any surprise they wound up in the same place
During a sit-down with BingUNews, Tallmadge and Serati shared how they never imagined attending school on the East Coast until they learned about Binghamton at a college fair. That’s when the unique opportunities at the University’s School of Management proved too good to pass up
“Binghamton really sold me on job security by placing 100% of their accounting majors,” Tallmadge said
“Just having that connection with the Big Four accounting is very encouraging when you’re starting out.”
After they found out they’d each been accepted into an honors program at Binghamton — PwC Scholars for Tallmadge and EY Student Leaders for Serati — it became even clearer that college would be a transformative experience
“We had talked to a lot of people who pursued accounting degrees at SOM Career Week who said they went into fields like human resources or marketing and finance,” Serati said
“so I think it’s important for students to know a degree like accounting can be a future opener
What excited them most when they started the fall semester was how first-year students could get a clear look at what their business education would shape into
They’re building a foundation of critical skills through courses like Introduction to Decision Making in Management and Business Law – their favorite class so far – while also finding spare time to learn the guitar and “monopolize” the hammocks at Hinman College whenever they’re able
“Being such close friends in the same major
we weren’t sure if we’d have trouble making new friends
but Binghamton’s made it really easy for us,” Serati said
We learned we study a lot better when we’re working outside the residence hall settings
which is also where some of the Starbucks damage happens.”
Even though their undergraduate years are just starting
Tallmadge and Serati are already eyeing a plan for graduate degrees through one of SOM’s unique program options
you’d think major SOM events like Career Week would be very intimidating
they take something that could feel like a whirlwind to a new student and make it so much more accessible,” Tallmadge said
“There are so many great opportunities here
and because they also make it really easy to set ourselves up for graduate degrees
Where can a Binghamton accounting degree take you
These lifelong friends from Seattle can’t wait to find out

The MAC should be familiar ground for the Rough Riders
who shared a league with many of the current MAC teams — including Field
Ravenna and Springfield — back in the old Portage Trail Conference Metro Division
Roosevelt was a member of the PTC Metro from 2005 through 2014 before switching to the Suburban League
"Our community is very excited," Rough Riders athletic director Ben Dunlap said
our community are very excited about the opportunity to have these very close communities that — we see each other at the fairs and we see each other at community events and things like that — and to be able to get on the field and on the court and compete against each other
while Tallmadge has been a Suburban member since 1990
The move leaves 13 schools in the Suburban League — Aurora
"The Suburban League is a very well-respected league
and the schools and the athletic directors
"I told the Suburban League when we met as athletic directors
when it got out that the Metro [Athletic Conference] was accepting letters
why we put the letter in after hearing from our community and that this was a very unique opportunity."
This is the latest domino after the announcement in July that Coventry is departing the MAC for the Principals Athletic Conference
with the three schools tentatively set to switch over from the Suburban League's American Conference in 2027-2028
although there's some thought the move could take place a year earlier
They are set to join current MAC members Cloverleaf
it’s kind of like where does that leave us?” Tallmadge athletic director Bill Johnson said
we haven’t had a ton of conversation of what the Suburban League would look like without them
but getting bigger wasn’t going to help us
We think the location for us as far as the other schools and travel is great
it would give us the best chance to compete
The Metro Athletic Conference is very appealing.”
Cuyahoga Falls athletic director Kenny Johnson said he expects the Falls Board of Education to meet and ratify the move soon
Johnson said there are several reasons why Falls would like to move
including setting up an in-league rivalry with Woodridge
"I think one of the biggest reasons is rivalry within the city," Johnson said
to have that rivalry within the city would bring a lot of excitement to Falls."
He also noted a desire to find a league in which the Black Tigers can be more competitive
"We just haven't been super competitive in the Suburban League
not just in football but in a lot of sports," Johnson said
"I think we have a chance to be more competitive in the MAC
but even there we're still going to have to work hard."

improve to 5-0 on the year with their 11th consecutive win against the Blue Devils (3-2
“I’m proud of the way the kids played and they really came out and executed right from the get-go,” head coach Mike Gibbons said
Gibbons knew his team had to come out and set the tone early on
After junior running back Casey Myser opened up the scoring with a 6-yard rushing touchdown on the team’s opening possession
Junior linebacker Kallen Whitling recovered a fumble inside the 5-yard line
where quarterback Dylan Borla would run in a 1-yard touchdown four plays later to start the demise of the Blue Devils
Myser scored a game-high four touchdowns in the first half
He was a player that was often caught behind the Blue Devil defense where his quick speed was unmatched on the field
it was their defense that fed off of that momentum
Carson Noonan and Matthew Dean were dominant
getting to Ryan Loveland on a night where he couldn’t find success throwing the ball
the Hornets defense had given up just seven points in the last two weeks and Gibbons likes to think that scoreless trend can continue throughout the year
I don’t think any team in the state can run the ball against us.”
The Hornets had seven offensive drives in the first half and all seven of them resulted in a touchdown
Dylan Borla threw for three touchdowns throughout the half
Senior wide receiver Luke Berkmeyer caught a 65-yard touchdown pass on a seam route along with the two touchdown catches from Myser
he’s going to find me open and luckily I found those two today,” Myser said about the two long touchdowns through the air
It was a first half where the Hornets garnered 381 total yards of offense (281 through the air and 100 yards rushing) while the Blue Devils had a total of 45 yards of offense while crossing midfield just once
we prepared hard for them all week,” Myser said
“We just came out here and did our job and the game play worked.”
The Blue Devils were able to get into the red zone on their opening drive of the second half
but junior defensive back Cooper Zielinski came away with an interception
highlighting a second half with few possessions from both teams due to the ongoing running clock
The confidence within the Hornet locker room is high
That gives players like Borla all the confidence he needs to help lead the offense in the right direction throughout the second half of the year
“This is our year,” Borla said with a smile on his face

while the defense continued to play at a high level as the Hilltoppers downed Tallmadge 49-14 in the first round of the Division III Region 9 playoffs
The Toppers scored early and often in the first quarter
They also added another 21 points to the scoreboard in the fourth quarter
The game started off well for the Hilltoppers
who for the final time this year were defending The Hill
“I’m proud of our seniors tonight,” said Chardon head coach Mitch Hewitt
We’re about beat up as any team I’ve ever coached in my 14 years here and all we do is keep reloading people
That’s a testament to my staff and these kids.”
After forcing the Blue Devils to go 3-and-out on their first possession
junior quarterback Dreyton Allgood ripped off a 64-yard run on Chardon’s first offensive play to give Chardon a first and goal from the three
Senior fullback Vinny Colombi finished off the play with a 3-yard touchdown run
Facing a fourth down and two near midfield
Tallmadge head coach Mike Hay elected to go for it
and was rewarded as senior running back Joseph took a handoff
went around the right end and outraced the Toppers for a 58-yard score
Allgood and senior halfback Caleb Hewitt connected on a 64-yard reception to put the ball inside the Tallmadge five
Colombi then finished it off with a 4-yard run to make it 14-7 with 7:19 to play in the first quarter
Chardon would go on to outscore the Blue Devils 35-7 for the remainder of the game
Allgood ran right up the gut and kept going
cashing in on a 61-yard touchdown run to give Chardon a 21-7 lead
Chardon added another touchdown early in the second quarter
as senior halfback Beckett Dotson punched it in from 3-yards out to extend the lead to 28-7
“Having Beckett in the backfield has been incredible,” Hewitt said
“It means Caleb can be a decoy now because everyone is yelling jet
So we’re back to being a three-headed monster
which is really a four-headed monster at this point.”
The offense was doing great in the first half
I feel like the defense stepped it up,” said senior defensive lineman Tyler Noerr
He added that the offense’s performance allowed the defense to stay fresh in the first half
Hewitt stressed it allowed him to evaluate the health of his players
“It’s like every day is evaluating who’s healthy and who is available to go,” said Hewitt
Caleb (Hewitt) didn’t practice since Monday afternoon
he seemingly played well despite a groin injury
We’re going to get McDevitt back next week
so it was good tonight and I don’t think we lost anyone.”
The Blue Devils went on a three-minute drive
but senior quarterback Ryan Loveless fumbled the football
which was recovered by senior linebacker Alexander Ash
The Toppers were not content to run out the clock
and fumbled the ball on their own 31 with 30 seconds to play
Loveless kept his cool and his team down the Chardon 3
hit senior wide receiver Brady Headrick for a 3-yard touchdown reception to make it 28-14
Hay decided to roll the dice to start the third
he team went for the onside kick at the start of the second half and recovered
the Blue Devils controlled the ball on the Chardon side of the field
stopping Tallmadge on multiple fourth downs
“Our defense is outstanding,” said Ash of the stand the defense made in the third quarter
“I count on every single one of my defensive players to do their assignment and get their job done.”
I felt like we were down there for 20 minutes
but we were able to open the lid in the fourth,” said Hewitt
He felt the reason for the struggles were self-inflicted
but it was more of us not doing things the right way
it felt like Tallmadge was poised to dominate the second half
Ash thought Charon’s last defensive stop in the third is what changed the momentum
“That last defensive stop was huge and then after that
Chardon’s offense picked up its first first down of the quarter as Hewit ran the jet sweep nearside
The Hilltoppers took that momentum and ran with it – literally
The Toppers began to play better after that first down
moved the ball down the field and were rewarded by Dotson’s second touchdown of the game — a 3-yard run
the Blue Devils sensed the game was slipping away and played with more urgency and abandonment
Loveless was looking for one of his receivers over the middle
who intercepted the pass and turned it into a pick six
“I saw the quarterback’s alignment,” said Ash
“They were dropping back and I was running.”
He added that he was thankful his fellow defenders made some great blocks on the return
“He’s peaking at the right time,” said Hewitt of Ash
I mean that’s dude’s body has been in more car collisions than a demolition derby driver who’s 80.”
sophomore running back Drew Platz scored the game’s final touchdown to make it 49-14
Chardon was able to get more pressure on Loveless
“Making him scramble out of the pocket puts a lot of pressure on him and effects his throws,” said Ash
“We’re dialing up great blitzes thanks to Coach Landies and with Coach Francis working with us all week on pass rush just paid off,” said Noerr
The Toppers running backs combined for five scores on the night and Hewitt finished with 64 rushing yards and 97 receiving yards
the Hilltopper defense held Tallmadge to 182 total yards of offense
The Blue Devils picked up nine first downs
With Cuyahoga Valley Christen Academy defeating University School
the Hilltoppers have played their last home game of the year
the memories at Chardon Memorial are ones he will treasure
including the felling the of walking off a winner against the Blue Devils
“Knowing this was our last time on this field and that we ended it with a bang; I couldn’t ask for a better opportunity.”
“It’s nice we get to go out with a win,” said Noerr
Not only was it the seniors last game at home
but it was also the final home football game for Chardon Athletic Director Doug Snyder
“Doug Snyder has been an awesome AD for me for 14 years,” Hewitt said
Who knows what the future holds for a lot of people
so it’s good that we walked down the hill and we’re walking up with a victory.”
the Hilltoppers will travel down to Cuyahoga Falls to take on Cuyahoga Valley Christen Academy in round two action
