The Tanque Verde Market will soon set up their tents and shops at Tucson Country Day School on Wrightstown Road
Even though market founders say their vendors had a financially successful year last year at their original site
leaders said the move will give more than 60 small businesses an outdoor space where they can showcase their goods and better mingle with shoppers
Tanque Verde Market will be open this Saturday at its new spot from 10 a.m
Founder Michelle Bullock started the market with a goal of giving Eastside families a place they can come together
they now need to give visitors and entrepreneurs more physical space to truly enjoy a market focused on celebrating local roots
"Markets really facilitate community and bring together local businesses
In looking for a new site to host the market
Bullock said Tucson Country Day School made sense because as an institution
they too focus on connecting with communities in service
The new venue will also give families added benefits of having a school infrastructure for young children to play
and a place where parents and children can find ideas for their own ventures
said the family focus offers unique perspective compared to other local markets

Tanque Verde High School sophomore Claire Achilles uses her rise ball to get the final strike in the Hawks' 5-1 victory over No
at TVHS (video by Michael Lev / Arizona Daily Star)
What to watch and listen to in the sports world for today
Fitting that Tanque Verde sophomore ace Claire Achilles took the Gatorade shower after the Hawks’ 5-1 win Monday over previously unbeaten Empire
snapping the defending 3A state champion Ravens’ 39-game winning streak dating to last season
Such a celebration is generally for a coach after a championship win
Achilles is not the coach and it was not a championship game
but with the Hawks’ youthful exuberance — only one senior on the roster — what does it matter
“Not only can she do what she does in the circle and in the (batting) box
but she brings the team together,” Tanque Verde coach Mark Stevens said of Achilles
Stevens went so far as to say Achilles was the team’s leader last year as a freshman from the dugout
He also did not hesitate to mention that the Hawks are unlike any other he has coached
including the 2016 Catalina Foothills team he coached to a state championship
“I love this team; this is the best team chemistry than any team I’ve coached,” said Stevens
who is in his second year at Tanque Verde after coaching at Catalina Foothills for 10 seasons
“I’ve coached for a while and this is the best group of girls from top to bottom.”
Mark Stevens coached 10 years at Catalina Foothills and led the Falcons to a state title in 2016. 5-1 3A South) are in a three-way tie in the loss column of the 3A South standings with No
Achilles outdueled one of the state’s top pitchers — Empire senior Kendall Freidinger
a Weber State signee who entered the game with a 15-0 record this season
“I’ve definitely watched a lot of game review and all respect to that team because that team is amazing,” Achilles said of Empire
“That team is so good but honestly for me as a pitcher
I appreciate the competitiveness with everything because when I have a good time
props to our coaches because they put on a good game today and coached so good.”
Tanque Verde ace Claire Achilles is the Hawks leader as only a sophomore. Achilles’ two-run home run broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth
The blast that cleared the fence in left-centerfield by 20 feet scored Mikaela Jackson
a freshman who led off that inning with a double
scattered three hits with 12 strikeouts and a walk against Empire
The run scored against her in the seventh inning was unearned
She improved to 12-1 with a 0.67 ERA with 145 strikeouts and 36 walks in 73 innings
Her batting average is .534 with nine home runs and 31 RBIs
and I appreciate the big freshman group this year,” Achilles explained about the young roster
“We’re definitely lower-classmen based
That really brings a lot of fun to our team
“I think we all just have the need to play and to play competitive teams

Achilles managed her way through the interview as her teammates mounted softball gloves
which includes former Ironwood Ridge and Arizona captain Izzy Pacho
is ideal for the “goofy” characteristic of the youthful team because they keep the game in perspective for the Hawks
Former Sabino standout Tracey Rodriguez Lisacki
who teaches at Tanque Verde and is a former president of Tanque Verde Fastpitch
is another one of Stevens’ top assistants
“It’s just a positive environment,” Pacho said
“When they step on the field each and every day
we care about them more as a person than as a player
That’s all I wanted when I played and that’s what I try to promote — you as a person
your family … when you value a person off the field
Freidinger struck out nine and walked two while allowing five hits and the five runs in her six innings of work
Sara Hoagland belted her third HR of the season, and it was a big one – a 3-run shot to CF to put Tanque Verde ahead 5-0In the bottom of the sixth. The No. 6 Hawks beat No. 1 Empire 5-1. Hoagland is a junior. The Hawks have only one senior. pic.twitter.com/PWP3bI8Apj
— Javier Morales (@JavierJMorales) April 22, 2025
Empire suffered its first defeat since March 14 of last year against Marana
It was Freidinger’s first loss since a relief appearance in an 11-2 loss against Sahuarita last March 9
A three-run home run in the sixth inning by junior Sara Hoagland
increased Tanque Verde’s lead to 5-0
The victory avenged last year’s 12-2 run-rule loss in five innings at Empire
which was in the midst of a 17-game winning streak en route to its 3A state title
“This made my whole year,” Hoagland said of the victory
“I’ve been looking forward to this game for two weeks now
Only thing on my mind was to win this game.”
Chances are Tanque Verde and Empire will meet again in the postseason given their lofty ratings
“We want to have the home field while we can (in the playoffs as a top eight team) and hopefully we don’t play these guys until the championship,” Stevens said of Empire
led by three-time state champion coach Shannon Woolridge
“I told Shannon I don’t want to see those guys until the championship.”

A pizza and fries dish from Slice & Ice
Slice & Ice is opening a new location at 6810 E
where east-siders will get the chance to indulge in ranch fries
strawberry lemonade ice and slices of pepperoni pizza
He knows what to mix and match to create something special
His first creation dates back to the '70s when he and his best friend Bob Greenberg would drive around town selling their refreshing frozen lemonade
they were parked at a construction site when one of the workers requested they start selling some lunch items
Rhode Island and grew up around Italian influences
Irving made a few Italian grinders for the workers
the sandwiches sold like hotcakes — until someone else had a request
and he wanted Irving to offer something else
Irving took apart the grinder and examined the ingredients
What kind of new creation could he make with this
he came up with a classic ham and cheese sandwich
packing a few to take to the workers the next day
Fast forward decades later and Irving had retired
It had been years since he and Greenberg sold Eegee's
But then Irving began working his magic again, this time in an empty west-side Kentucky Fried Chicken building at 1905 W. Grant Road.
Because Irving and another friend own various properties around town
he started taking pieces from each of the chains
placing them together to see what kind of new restaurant he could create
Chairs from Subway, countertops from McDonalds, trashcans from KFC and pizza ovens from Pieology began to fill the empty space. Soon, all these pieces came together to create Slice & Ice
This Frankenstein creation quickly became a local favorite
where customers could get a slice of pizza or stuffed heroes for lunch
of course with a refreshing Italian ice on the side
Irving is bringing his creation to the east side — to a building that his children grew up in years ago
Slice & Ice will be opening a new location at 6810 E. Tanque Verde Road
While Irving wasn’t planning to return to the restaurant business after selling Eegee's in 2006
when the building on the west side became vacant in 2020
“I had to find something else to do with my time.”
Since they had a pizza oven that came from another property
One problem arose though: Irving didn’t know how to make pizza
a former pizzeria worker knew all the ins and outs of pizza making
They worked together to craft the perfect pizza dough
The pizza at Slice & Ice has a thin crust
that way it can be cooked in three minutes and ready quickly for those waiting in the drive-thru
hot links and Buffalo chicken are just a few of the toppings you can get on your pizza here
Slice & Ice also offers a variety of sandwiches
Slice & Ice's menu continues to grow with different items added on frequently
The newest addition is their round sandwiches
which come with a round bun that is made fresh in the kitchen
Irving said their chicken parmesan round is becoming a popular item with customers
The standout on the menu has to be their Italian 3 Meat & Cheese Hero
you're met with a giant sandwich filled with ingredients bursting out the sides
Just the smell of the sandwich is nostalgic
like I had been transported back in time and was a little girl again enjoying a sandwich with my family after a long day of shopping in Tucson
I was flooded with memories of field trips we would take in elementary school
sitting in Irving’s former restaurant and chowing down on grinders as we showed off what trinkets we bought at museum gift shops
The flavors meld together in your mouth: tangy
my sandwich was gone and I had longed for the time I still had the two halves left
But my sadness didn’t last long when I remembered I still had a side of crispy crinkle-cut fries and a side of ranch
I finished my lunch off with something sweet: one of their gourmet Italian ices
Irving said they make their ice using natural flavors and cane sugar
their staple menu includes orange pineapple
I got a small sweet tea and had a big smile on my face upon the first bite
smooth ice tastes exactly like a freshly brewed iced tea
It isn't overly sweet or artificial tasting
Many people make the drive to the west side during their lunch breaks
asking Irving when he plans to expand his restaurant and hoping he'll open a space closer to them
Irving never intended to open another Slice & Ice
When the Eegee’s on Tanque Verde closed last year
Coming back to the Tanque Verde location is like a homecoming for him; this was the Eegee’s his children grew up in
Irving hopes to open in the next six months
Frankenstein magic again and instead of pitchforks
people will be lining up with forks in tow
ready to take a bite of whatever delicious concoction he comes up with next

The fact that Tanque Verde and second-year coach Jeff Bollnow came close to make the 2A state playoffs was impressive inasmuch as the Hawks lost more than 20 seniors from last year’s team that reached the quarterfinal round for the first time in program history
one spot out of the 16-team 2A playoff field announced Saturday
The 2A allows region champions to automatically qualify
23 Holbrook (7-3) qualified for the tournament as the 2A Little Colorado champions
16-rated Heritage Academy Laveen (5-4) from the playoff field
6 seed at 9-1 in Carlos Lopez’s first year as head coach

The Empire High School girls softball team hadn’t lost a game in over a year
Tanque Verde’s standout sophomore dominated from the circle and provided power from the plate in one of the biggest upsets of the 2025 season on April 21 — if you want to call it that
Entering Monday’s regular-season finale vs
Tanque Verde had lost only once since March 21
The Hawks wouldn’t be soaring this high without Achilles. Entering Monday’s game, she led the 3A Conference with a 0.67 ERA
ranked fifth in strikeouts (145) and was tied for fourth in home runs (nine)
“She’s the total package,” Tanque Verde coach Mark Stevens said
Stevens lauded Achilles for her skill on the field as well as her leadership off it
an Ironwood Ridge product who played for Arizona from 2019-23
“I think she has the highest potential out of anyone in Tucson
“She’s at a point right now where she’s throwing great games and attacking the zone and owning the mound and is in full control of the game
So she still has room to grow and things to work on
“The thing I love the most about her is that she loves this game and she’s just such a good person off the field
“When you talk about that ‘it’ factor of what differentiates good from great
Achilles’ love for the game was tested — and eventually reinforced — when she missed most of her freshman season because of an injury
Achilles was pitching in the semifinals of a high-level club tournament in California in October 2023 when she felt something pop in her back
She had suffered a scapula fracture in her right side
It probably wasn’t the wisest course of action
Her mother, Erin, is a former nurse. Once she figured out what the injury was, her daughter had to shut it down. Claire then embarked on a long, intensive rehab process that included twice-weekly trips to Phoenix for physical therapy. Achilles underwent BFR (blood flow restriction) therapy
She built up the muscles around the injury and strengthened the other side of her body
“It was really hard for her at the beginning
not knowing what her role was and not knowing what was needed from her for the team,” Pacho said
“She got to sit back and learn about culture
“I always say everything happens for a reason and I think last year made her a better player
even though she couldn’t physically do the work.”
“She learned how much she loves the game,” Erin Achilles added
“how much the game is a part of who she is and her structure in life
Achilles returned for Tanque Verde’s playoff push last spring
She pitched in the Hawks’ final four games
The Ravens would win the state championship eight days later
part of a 39-game winning streak that ended April 21
Achilles and Tanque Verde flipped the script in the rematch
allowing one unearned run and three hits while striking out 11 batters and walking only one
She outdueled Empire senior ace Kendall Freidinger and homered off her in the bottom of the fourth inning
Sara Hoagland’s three-run homer made it 5-0 in the bottom of the sixth
Achilles and her teammates were fired up to say the least
The Hawks wore jerseys honoring Nikki Cantalicio, the mother of freshman catcher Aubrey Cantalicio. Nikki died on April 18, 2024, after a long battle with breast cancer
“The shirt we’re wearing is very near and dear for us,” Achilles said afterward
We came out here thinking that we are going to have to play our best and we cannot have mistakes.”
Only a couple of Empire hitters were able to pull the ball
The second-oldest of Erin and Jon Achilles’ four children
“They took me out of soccer because I kept on running people over,” Achilles said
Claire Achilles delivers a pitch as a 7-year-old
She's now a sophomore at Tanque Verde High School
Local softball coach Stan Rome happened to be a family friend
She fell in love with the game and by age 10 became a pitcher
She has developed into a two-way threat with a similar build and game to Arizona’s Devyn Netz
Achilles is honing her pitching skills under a former UA standout, Becky Lemke-Blatnick
College offers are bound to come Achilles’ way when they officially can be sent on Sept
For now she’s focusing on the upcoming AIA playoffs
Pacho predicted at least one state championship
The Hawks likely will go as far as Achilles can take them
She’s ready to put them on her fully healthy back
“She drives that ship,” Erin Achilles said
There’s no joking around when it comes to softball
Who is the unsung hero on your team and why
I don’t think I’ve (experienced) a day where she hasn’t just come out and just balls-to-the-wall given everything
What artists or songs do you listen to when you’re working out
Do you have a game-day ritual and/or superstition
I like to come to school early and I like to just try and bang out all my schoolwork in the morning and study for everything that I have the next day so I don’t have to worry about it
I want to do criminology or psychology in college
Who is your favorite all-time softball player

explained that the project was a great opportunity for his students
"My class recently got to partner with Lisa Frank," said Riffle

Three students from Riffle’s class were selected to assist the Lisa Frank crew on the shoot

"It was a learning experience for me because it showed me an example of what I thought it would be compared to what it actually was
Staab added that much of what she had learned in the classroom prepared her for the experience
"We used some of the stuff from here in the classroom—setting up the lights
"We do that a lot in here because we have to set up our own equipment."
the experience was a glimpse into how production works outside the classroom
"It was a really good experience to go through and see the trials and errors of everything," Folkerts said
Staab was also excited about the products themselves
"I thought the clothes were awesome," she said

Food website Mashed compiled a culinary bucket list for you to consider
These sandwiches were among their top choices
His first creation dates back to the ’70s when he and his best friend Bob Greenberg would drive around town selling their refreshing frozen lemonade
It had been years since he and Greenberg sold Eegee’s
But then Irving began working his magic again, this time in an empty west-side Kentucky Fried Chicken building at 1905 W. Grant Road.
Chairs from Subway, countertops from McDonalds, trashcans from KFC and pizza ovens from Pieology began to fill the empty space. Soon, all these pieces came together to create Slice & Ice
Irving is bringing his creation to the east side — to a building that his children grew up in years ago
Slice & Ice will be opening a new location at 6810 E. Tanque Verde Road
While Irving wasn’t planning to return to the restaurant business after selling Eegee’s in 2006
though: Irving didn’t know how to make pizza
Slice & Ice’s menu continues to grow with different items added on frequently
you’re met with a giant sandwich filled with ingredients bursting out the sides
It isn’t overly sweet or artificial tasting
asking Irving when he plans to expand his restaurant and hoping he’ll open a space closer to them

TUCSON, Ariz. (KGUN) — 26-year-old Casey Sohoel-Smith, a turquoise silversmith is bringing more Southwestern and Native American silver and turquoise jewelry to the Eastside. His shop, Tanque Verde Turquoise
was remodeled after being open for less than a year
Turquoise is rare and expensive and was mined in Bisbee many years ago. It's also the official gemstone of Arizona
Sohoel-Smith says his silversmith journey began almost 10 years ago with beadwork
introduced him to basics of silverwork and stonework
“Being able to make wearable art and have somebody appreciate it every day
Sohoel-Smith tells me he isn't Native American
He says it's important for him to recognize and honor the people who did this before him with everything he makes
“If you’re gonna be working in this kind of field to recognize and honor the people who did this before you and are doing it and to pay homage to that is kind of important," said Sohoel-Smith
Having a traditional trading post has been his goal
allowing other local artists to sell their goods at his shop
“If I solely was doing the jewelry end of things," said Sohoel-Smith
"It probably wouldn’t survive so like that’s also part of the reason of having a trading post is kind of cool ‘cause it rounds everything together
You have other artists that fill that niche that I can’t appeal to.”
Tanque Verde Turquoise opened last December
but business picked up fast and needed to expand
maximize the smaller space that we have here to really be able to benefit everybody who’s an artist.”
Casey grew up seeing how artsy downtown Tucson is and wanted to bring that to the East
“The biggest thing I remember was moving out here was there’s really not a whole bunch of that and I thought that’s okay but I feel like we need more," said Sohoel-Smith
Casey says his artwork helps him form close connections with the community

Pima started off its day with a 59-30 win over Apache Junction to move into the semifinal.
Morenci survived a close contest with Fort Thomas, 60-59, to advance to its game against Thatcher.
The Apaches also fell to (Tucson) Empire in a heartbreaker, 71-72, for their second 1-point loss of the day.
The Eagles defeated (Tucson) Empire earlier in the day 59-44 and are now in the consolation third-place game against Tanque Verde, starting at 4 p.m. on Saturday at Guitteau Gymnasium
Safford fell to Tanque Verde earlier in the day, 42-61, but bounced back to hold on against Apache Junction for the 76-73 victory.
Safford will face (Tucson) Empire in Game 11, starting at 1 p.m. at EAC.
In other Day-2 tournament scores, St. David defeated Hayden 52-45, Pueblo defeated Hayden 63-57, and St. Johns beat St. David 67-47.
Preston Russell flexed hard against the big Tanque Verde frontcourt and finished with a game-high 17 points. Russell was a consistent threat down low and hit at least two buckets in three out of four quarters. But after the first quarter of play, it was anyone’s game, with Pima up 15-14.
Points were hard to come by in the second quarter, with no team scoring for the first three minutes of game time.
Rich Knott led the Hawks in scoring with 14 points and had 8 in the first half.
When the dust cleared, the teams stood deadlocked at 22-22 at the halftime break.
Russell’s partner in the inside/outside game was floor leader Keegan Corona, who hit back-to-back drives to bring Pima within a point late in the third.
The Roughriders were down to the Hawks 26-31 with about 1:45 left in the third quarter when Corona slashed to the lane and hit the layup. Then, after a Hawks’ miss, Corona received the ball on an outlet pass and took it coast-to-coast to bring Pima within 1, 30-31. After Charlie Richardson got the rebound put back, Pima took a 32-31 lead into the final quarter of play.
Tanque Verde’s Rocco Haggard (11 points) led the charge back against Pima in the fourth. With one minute left on the clock and Pima up 44-37, the Riders turned it over, and the Hawks found Haggard in the corner for a 3-pointer. Another turnover resulted in a score by Philip Knott, and all of a sudden, it was a 2-point game, 44-42, with 32 seconds left to play.
But Keegan Corona and Joel Mattice both hit 1/2 free throws to secure the victory, and a Haggard score in the waning seconds brought the final to 46-44, with Pima advancing.
Rich Knott led the scoring for Tanque Verde with 14 points, followed by Haggard with 11, Enzo Castillo with 9, Philip Knott with 7, and Jacob Dickens with 3 points.
Russell led the scoring for Pima with 17 points, followed by Corona with 13, Charlie Richardson with 6, Rhett Hughes hit a big 3-pointer early on and finished with 4 points, Isaac Thompson’s 3-pointer was huge as his only points, Daxton McRae got a bucket for 2 points, and Joel Mattice knocked down a free throw for one point.

TUCSON, Ariz. — When it comes to car wash spots, Mister Car Wash is the biggest game in town
with over 20 individual locations and their corporate headquarters located in Tucson
But a recently approved Mister Car Wash location at the intersection of Tanque Verde and Bear Canyon roads has stirred opposition among local residents
who argue the project could disrupt the character of their neighborhood
The Tucson City Council's approval of a zoning change has paved the way for the car wash, despite objections from the Bear Canyon Neighborhood Association
expressed concerns about the impact on the area’s rural environment
“A Mister Car Wash does not fit with the plans of the Bear Canyon Neighborhood,” LaTour said
“It’s a rural area — suburban ranch-type zoning with very specific reasons and places for all types of commercial.”
Residents also fear the car wash will exacerbate traffic issues at the already congested intersection
LaTour highlighted the potential danger of having a high-traffic facility so close to the intersection
“To be only 400 feet from the intersection when you have emergency braking to turn into the facility..
It’s a recipe for disaster,” LaTour warned
Water usage has also been a significant point of contention
LaTour cited concerns about the millions of gallons of water the car wash would consume annually
stressing the environmental impact in a desert community
emphasizing its commitment to environmental stewardship and community integration
“Our new locations recycle around 30% of the water we use to wash a car,” the company stated
“Studies have shown that home washers use almost three times the amount of water as a professional car wash
making commercial car washing the more environmentally friendly way to keep your car clean.”
The company also addressed traffic concerns
noting the inclusion of a deceleration lane to minimize disruption
“A deceleration lane allows vehicles to slow down before exiting the main roadway without affecting the main flow of traffic,” the statement read
fearing the project could set a precedent for further erosion of neighborhood plans across Tucson
Here is the full statement from Mister Car Wash:
"Mister Car Wash is unwavering in our commitment to fully comply with all applicable zoning
We conduct thorough due diligence and work closely with local officials to ensure that each of our locations
not only meets but exceeds all relevant standards
Our adherence to stringent internal policies reflects our dedication to surpassing industry best practices in water conservation
and environmental stewardship. We pride ourselves on being responsible corporate citizens and are dedicated to making a positive and lasting impact in the communities we serve
Our commitment goes beyond compliance; we strive to set a benchmark for environmental responsibility and be a leader in the car wash industry."
(KGUN) — Blake Reed's story doesn't start with the first play of last year's preseason game against Tanque Verde
"He's just a great young man," said Pusch Ridge Christian Academy head coach Kent Middleton
Reed was set to have a big senior season until he suffered a non-contact injury
"I knew right then and there it was pretty serious."
"I just remember being very distraught riding in the hospital with my leg hurting," said Reed
"There were tears flowing down my face because I thought I'd never play football again."
Reed was diagnosed with a hip dislocation and acetabular fracture
It wasn't the first adversity Blake Reed has faced
Blake was riding with his father in an ATV in the imperial sand dunes west of Yuma
"It got too close and it ended up flipping into a canal," recounted Reed
"It went into twenty feet of water and landed on its side."
Blake was strapped underwater wearing a five-point harness seat belt
Blake was able to free himself and swam up to the surface
"I remember getting to the surface and not seeing him there."
Blake appeared to have lost his senior season due to injury
Blake was granted a hardship waiver by the Arizona Interscholastic Association
making him eligible to have the senior season he missed last year
"All the glory to God that he enabled to me to play this year."
Blake has taken advantage of his new opportunity
A two-touchdown performance last year has led the Lions to a 12-1 record and a spot in the Class 3A state title game
"He's so unassuming except for his physical presence," said Middleton
"It means a lot to be out here playing football

Saddlehorn Saloon — a well-known local watering hole
and country-western flair — is getting a makeover at 6300 E
The cowboy dive bar that’s been around since the ’90s was recently purchased by Sally Shamrell-Murphy and Glenn Murphy
which is just a few steps away from the saloon
In March 2023, Sally and Glenn took over Jonathan’s Cork for longtime owners Jonathan and Collette Landeen, renaming it to The Cork, so they’re no strangers to keeping traditions alive.
Therefore, fear not, fans of Saddlehorn! They plan to keep some of its nostalgia alive while renovating the space and changing its name to UnCork’d Kitchen & Bar. “We spent lots of time at the ‘Horn back in the restaurant row days, and want to breathe new life into it,” Sally added.

They’re upgrading the kitchen and adding food on a nightly basis
“We’re excited to have purchased another Tucson legacy spot and we look forward to turning it into something the neighborhood will be proud of,” said Glenn
The last day to pop your head into the Saddlehorn Saloon (before it undergoes renovations) is Sunday
On that day they’ll be selling a lot of the cowboy memorabilia so come on down and take pieces of the Saddlehorn home with you
UnCork’d Kitchen & Bar is expected to open this December (subject to change)
Saddlehorn Saloon and the soon-to-be UnCork’d Kitchen & Bar is located at 6300 E. Tanque Verde Rd. For more information, follow UnCork’d on Instagram.
