TAVARES: I am Harold Tavares, executive director for Africa Group II, EDS 13 at the World Bank Group.
SIGNÉ: What are your key takeaways from the 2025 Spring Meetings?
TAVARES: My biggest takeaway is it’s about the theme that there was for the Spring Meeting: jobs. Because the most important thing to fight poverty is to create jobs for people, in particular to young people and women, and that’s my biggest takeaway because that’s the way to fight poverty and to eliminate poverty is to give opportunity.
SIGNÉ: And executive director, how might the 2025 Spring Meetings shape policy decisions, including those of the World Bank or the IMF or central banks, ministries, countries, and how could they also help shaping, delivering tangible results across Africa moving forward?
SIGNÉ: Incredibly powerful. Thank you so much for joining us today.
TAVARES: Thank you, so much. Happy to be here and looking forward to keep working.

2025: Participated in the Under Armour All-America Game where he totaled a game-high 7 tackles.
2024: Two-way player as a junior at Tavares, which competed in Florida’s 3A classification. Credited with 125 tackles (15 TFLs), 4 sacks and an INT on defense, per MaxPreps. Also carried the ball 23 times for 423 yards (18.4 YPC) and 6 TDs while also catching 5 passes for 97 yards and 4 TDs.

That’s where many long-tenured names find themselves—no longer at the top of cards
but still giving everything to stay competitive in a relentless environment
we learned that one of those veterans is no longer with the organization
He compiled a 16-10 record across 26 official UFC bouts
most recently earning a unanimous decision win over Gerald Meerschaert at UFC Fight Night: Emmett vs
Tavares went the distance in 19 of his 32 professional MMA bouts
His most notable matchups include a five-round war with future champion Israel Adesanya in 2018
and a recent dominant decision win over former titleholder Chris Weidman in 2023
He also tied Michael Bisping for the most wins (16) in UFC middleweight history
Roster changes like this reflect a broader pattern Dana White has long acknowledged—UFC's roster turnover is constant
And when your run spans 15 years in a single division
While nothing has been officially announced
it's possible Tavares could transition into coaching
or even explore new opportunities in promotions like PFL
or BKFC—should he decide to continue competing

For the first time in 15 years, Brad Tavares isn’t part of the UFC’s immediate plans
who made his octagon debut all the way back in 2010
has been removed from the UFC roster following the completion of his most recent contract
UFC officials confirmed the news to MMA Fighting on Saturday
While it’s entirely possible that Tavares could still eventually re-sign with the UFC
for now he’s been removed from the roster since he’s out of contract
Tavares exits as one of the most experienced UFC veterans in recent history after he made his debut as a 5-0 prospect and now holds a 21-10 record overall
Tavares has gone 2-2 in his past four fights, which includes wins over former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman and submission specialist Gerald Meerschaert in his latest win back in April
The 37-year-old Hawaiian, who now calls Las Vegas home, has faced a long list of top fighters during his career including four current or former middleweight champions including Weidman, Dricus du Plessis, Israel Adesanya and Robert Whittaker.
It remains to be seen if Tavares eventually agrees to a new deal to return to the UFC or if it’s possible that he ends up potentially signing with a different organization. For now, Tavares is a free agent with his UFC contract coming to an end without a new agreement in place.

Installation view: Tavares Strachan: Starless Midnight
Courtesy of the artist and Marian Goodman Gallery
Tavares Strachan’s goal is to create an alternate and functioning iconology for our times
On entering the exhibition Starless Midnight
Split Consciousness (Samuel Coleridge-Taylor) (2025); and a book
Encyclopedia of Invisibility (Pocket Guide) (2024) is the blueprint for the artist’s gestures in the exhibition
It is a compendium of mostly lesser-known and overlooked figures and concepts throughout history that form the basis of the exhibition
which takes the form of tributes in a variety of artistic outputs
The success of the exhibition is also its downfall; for while Strachan has created a wunderkammer of marvelous forms—such as a luminous skeleton striding towards us
Venus (Rosetta Tharpe) (2025)—the forms are so varied that it is tough to discern the artist himself
The only linkage among the works is the Encyclopedia
richly illustrated with many of Strachan’s previous works
provides a magic key to the menagerie of objects conjured up for our edification
Courtesy the artist and Marian Goodman Gallery
The ceramic sculptures work most effectively to execute Strachan’s aim of memorializing the forgotten
often utilizing the Inuit transformation mask format of one face
In Shu and Horus (Coleman and Harriet) (2025)
the head of Bessie Coleman opens revealing the face of Harriet Tubman
The composite head is placed on a black-and-white patterned
This assemblage is succinct in its expression of liberatory activism lineages
Most of the ceramic works are placed on their shipping crates
a visually jarring choice that lends a wonderful spontaneity to the works as if they might need to leave in a hurry (which at this point is a concern for all of us)
The Birth of Exuma (Eagle Talon) (2024) is a cenotaph to the Bahamian polymath
of matte and rough clay surfaces against the feathery stalks of the rice field
We experience this again in A Map of the Crown (Fulani Red) (2025) wherein a glistening porcelain bust is outfitted with a soft and tightly knitted carmine-colored hairpiece
Strachan achieves a similar wealth of unexpected visual stimuli in several of his musical sculptures—between traditional instruments and robotic components—in the aforementioned Venus
as well as Stubble Field for Anubis (2025)
a self-playing drum perched high atop a wooden plank
and Apollo’s Teacher (Blind Tom Wiggins) (2025)
an East African balaphone of dusty gray wood
While the ceramic memorials play on both the inherent power of a sculptural representation of the human face and the addition of traditional containers that trigger thoughts of ritual and spirituality
and Jupiter’s Fist (Haile Selassie) (2025)
seem like a two-dimensional unpacking of what is readily intuited in the sculptures; in fact
Son of Andromeda and Jupiter’s Fist both include ceramic busts of Malcolm X and Haile Selassie respectively
as if to hammer home a hard-to-distinguish point
text seems to indicate a semi-hidden subplot
but unlike the artist’s Encyclopedia of Invisibility
the presence of text in these paintings seems to argue against the necessity of reading
instead implying almost inscrutable text as legitimization of received wisdom
mimicking the engrossing energy fields of static produced by archaic cathode ray tubes
This has the opposite effect of the first series of paintings—pulling us into the canvas—where we realize that the energy field is one of text
but presents the word as a force of immense power
Starless Midnight functions as an exploration of the many possible means of linking information to image through light
But it is the simple media of book and sculpture that hold the disparate parts in place

TORONTO — John Tavares says the NHL’s concussion spotter pulled him from overtime on Saturday night with the Toronto Maple Leafs one shot away from eliminating the Ottawa Senators
Tavares stayed down on the ice for a few seconds after taking an unpenalized hit to the head from Ottawa’s Artem Zub on his first shift of the extra period — triggering his mandatory removal from the game under NHL rules
alright, standard set pic.twitter.com/xRKrSqtnHA
— Omar (@TicTacTOmar) April 27, 2025
Tavares wound up missing more than 10 minutes of game time
including the entirety of a four-minute Maple Leafs power play
and was unaware of what was happening on the ice at Canadian Tire Centre while receiving a complete SCAT5 evaluation in a back room
“I had no idea that there was a power play,” Tavares said Monday
“I was obviously pulled out and I had to go through the protocol.”
The NHL’s “Concussion Evaluation and Management Protocol” calls for the mandatory removal of a player who takes a direct blow to the head and exhibits any of four visible signs that could indicate a possible concussion: lying motionless on the ice; motor incoordination or balance problems; blank or vacant look; and/or being slow to get up
It is the team’s responsibility to remove a player from the game at the concussion spotter’s discretion and administer an acute evaluation in a distraction-free environment — typically called the “quiet room.”
Tavares was only on the ice for a few seconds in overtime before getting levelled by Zub in front of the Senators net
He was skating into the slot area and looking for a potential pass when the defenceman caught him in an unsuspecting position with his right forearm
“I don’t think I really need to explain it,” Tavares said Monday
“It’s pretty obvious what happened on the play
But just move on from it and go out there and keep competing and trust that the refs are going to make the right calls.”
The Leafs were reluctant to comment on the hit immediately following a 4-3 loss on Saturday night
but opened up about their displeasure while preparing for another chance to eliminate the Senators in Game 5
“I don’t like the hit,” said Leafs coach Craig Berube
“You’re interested to see why nothing gets called on that
Tavares is tied for the series lead with three goals and has five points through four games
He took part in a skills session with player development coach Patrick O’Sullivan on Monday morning and was a full participant in the practice that followed
“A little bit of soreness just in my jaw and cheek area
Given what was at stake when he was removed from Saturday’s game
it must not have felt too good to be taken off the bench by the concussion spotter following a 17-second shift to begin overtime
Tavares has scored three playoff overtime goals during his career — including the series-clincher for the Leafs when they beat the Tampa Bay Lighting in 2023
and a series-clincher for the New York Islanders against the Florida Panthers in 2016
Teammate Chris Tanev said of Tavares: “I’m sure he wasn’t very thrilled.”
Tanev then added an important caveat: “If you don’t think you’re feeling well you’re obviously thankful for probably them to pull you off
Definitely a lot of guys probably just keep playing
you’re probably not going to be thrilled to be sitting in the room for a while.”
Berube acknowledged how tough the timing was
but said he supports the efforts of the league to make sure the playing environment is as safe as possible

Xavier Williams, the 10-year-old boy who died after allegedly being tortured and abused by his mother and her boyfriend in Tavares
More than 500 people gathered at Lodge Community Chapel in Connecticut to say their final goodbye to Williams who died last month after he was allegedly
beaten and tortured in his Tavares home by his mother and her boyfriend
Kimberley Mills, 37, and Andre Walker, 36, were arrested after the two took Xavier to the hospital
“Though his life ended in pain and injustice
the love he gave and memories we now hold tightly,” said Nadeen Romain during the service
Mills and Walker were indicted on several charges including first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse
Court filings also revealed new details in the case
An affidavit by Tavares police said Mills and Walker brought a Xavier to the hospital in full cardiac arrest
[EXCLUSIVE: Become a News 6 Insider (it’s FREE) | PINIT! Share your photos]
Mills initially stated she didn’t know what happened but then ran away from the hospital when she realized the police were being called
She later came back without Walker but brought another child with her
Mills refused to talk after being read her Miranda rights
Hospital staff confirmed the injuries were severe — bruises at different healing stages
Police found surveillance showing Walker’s truck leaving town shortly after.
A search warrant at their house revealed disturbing evidence:
Xavier Williams’ brother who also lived at the home was interviewed explaining he an Xavier had been “punished” by having dumbbells (weights) dropped onto their stomach
He also mentioned being hit with boxing gloves and a copper rod
The child’s description of the dumbbells and clothing matched exactly what the police had recovered
Mills told child protective investigators that she had “failed” and kept saying she was “dead.”
She said Xavier had committed credit card fraud and stole from a Wawa.
She also talked about disciplining the child and said something like the child “deserved to die.”
She stated she made the child hold weights over their head
Then Andre Walker came over and started dropping weights onto the child’s stomach
Kimberly said she denied disciplining the Xavier that day
but explained that after the child was hurt and taken to the hospital
Walker said the child was “too good” and that’s why they were the way they were.
the child urinated on themselves and that Walker urinated on the child’s back too
Walker said they both physically disciplined the children

TORONTO -- John Tavares isn’t about to let some aches and pains in his face stand in the way of doing his part for the Toronto Maple Leafs in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference First Round against the Ottawa Senators at Scotiabank Arena on Tuesday (7 p.m
The Maple Leafs center missed more than 10 minutes of game time during overtime of Game 4 on Saturday when he was sent to concussion protocol after absorbing a hit from Senators defenseman Artem Zub
Tavares did return to take three shifts during a 4-3 loss at Canadian Tire Centre and was one of the first players on the ice for practice Monday
“A bit of soreness just in my jaw and cheek area
That’s optimistic news for a Maple Leafs team that needs Tavares to be a difference-maker like he’s been in the past
especially given Toronto’s history of being unable to put postseason opponents away when given the opportunity
The Maple Leafs will have another chance to do it Tuesday
and will be looking to him to repeat past heroics
he’s had a history of being able to thrust the final dagger into teams during elimination games
a feat his high-profile teammates have yet to accomplish
Since forwards Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner and William Nylander first started playing together in 2016
Toronto is 1-12 in games in which it could have eliminated the opposition with a victory
Its only win in that time came courtesy of Tavares
who scored at 4:36 of overtime to give the Maple Leafs a 2-1 victory against the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 6 of the 2023 Eastern Conference First Round and a 4-2 victory in the best-of-7 series
It is the Maple Leafs' only postseason series win in the past 21 years
$77 million contract ($11 million average annual value) with the Maple Leafs on July 1
Tavares already had produced a series-deciding postseason moment
In Game 6 of the 2016 first-round series between the New York Islanders and Florida Panthers
Tavares tied the game with 54 seconds left in the third period
then scored to win it at 10:41 of the second overtime for a 2-1 victory and the Islanders’ first series win since 1993
It speaks to Tavares’s ability to come through in the clutch
a trait the Maple Leafs hope he’ll replicate Tuesday
“I just think it’s the whole opportunity,” Tavares said
“I think it’s the whole game where you go out there and try to make a difference and getting to compete in the Stanley Cup Playoffs and have an opportunity to pursue that goal and that dream
“It’s a situation where you want to go out there and make a difference
whether that’s doing something defensively
or putting it in the back of the net yourself
So you continue to play your game the right way to play well and play at a high level and execute when the opportunities come.”
With the situation from Game 4 in the rearview mirror
the agenda of the Maple Leafs is simple -- find a way to win their fourth game in the series
“We just have to match the desperation they’re going to come with,” defenseman Chris Tanev said
“We felt we did a lot of good things the last game
but the outcome obviously wasn’t what we wanted
it’s going to be a harder game tomorrow than it was last game
Hopefully we can feed off the energy of our crowd and use that to our advantage.”

Fla—Tavares Police Department is investigating a single-vehicle crash that killed a Tavares man Tuesday morning
A passerby located a 2020 Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck off State Road 19 at South Eichelberger Road just before 6 a.m
deceased on the scene; he was not wearing a seatbelt
but TPD believes Torres was traveling southbound on State Road 19
TPD Detective Caitlin Diaz said in an email
It is unknown what time the crash occurred
the passerby who found the truck did not witness the crash

OTTAWA — The Toronto Maple Leafs saw one of their top performers in this first-round series sprawled out on the ice during overtime and they must have noticed that John Tavares was unavailable to occupy his usual spot at the net front during the four-minute power play that followed with a chance to sweep away the Ottawa Senators
But none of them would cop to knowing anything about the unpenalized Artem Zub hit that sent him to the dressing room for more than 10 minutes on Saturday night
I didn’t see it,” said Oliver Ekman-Larsson
they couldn’t have been too happy after Jake Sanderson kept the Senators’ season alive with a long shot through traffic that sent the Leafs home with a 4-3 loss in Game 4
Had Zub been sent off for interference on the first shift of overtime after lowering the boom on an unsuspecting Tavares
Tavares was nowhere near the puck and appeared to be dazed on the play
before going down the tunnel to the visitor’s dressing room at Canadian Tire Centre
More than 10 minutes of game time elapsed before he finally returned and managed to take three shifts
Tavares didn’t speak to reporters afterward
but Leafs coach Craig Berube didn’t seem overly worried about his status heading into Game 5 in Toronto on Tuesday night
“I don’t think there’s any concern,” said Berube
which at the time we got a power play and he’s not out there
Not only has Tavares been a major catalyst in helping the Leafs build a 3-1 series lead — he’s tied for the team lead with three goals and sits second with 13 shots — but also he’s a critical part of their red-hot power play
The Leafs have found success with the man advantage by filtering pucks to the crease area
where Knies and Tavares typically provide the finish
Tavares tied for the team lead with 12 power-play goals during the regular season and has already collected another two against Ottawa in Round 1
when Drake Batherson was assessed a double-minor for high-sticking Chris Tanev with the Sens season hanging in the balance on Saturday
Tavares was unavailable to join the usual five-forward formation because he was with the trainers in the back
Drake Batherson's high-sticking penalty sends the Leafs to a four-minute power play in OT pic.twitter.com/GVPzPie4dS
— Sportsnet (@Sportsnet) April 27, 2025
The Leafs couldn’t get a series-winning shot to fall
but we’ve been kind of solid and we’ve been with (Tavares) for a while now,” said Knies
but I think Mo stepped up and I think we had some good chances
I just think we need to put it in the back of the net when we get those.”
While the entire Tavares sequence in Game 4 might end up being nothing more than a footnote if he’s healthy enough to play Tuesday and the Leafs find a way to close out the series
those are both unknowns as we head into a two-day break in the series that will finally allow everyone to take a deep breath
Given the unpredictable nature of head injuries
it’s always possible that Tavares wakes up feeling not quite right on Sunday morning
as the Leafs confront some demons about their inability to win potential series-clinching games
it’s worth remembering that when they blew a 3-1 series lead to the Montreal Canadiens in the 2021 playoffs
they did so with Tavares sidelined by head and knee injuries
That’s obviously a piece of history no one in blue and white wants to see repeated
Even at age 34 and just two months shy of potential unrestricted free agency
He’s a steady performer and stabilizer coming off a monster season
there would be a big dropoff at 2C if he were unavailable to play
with the most likely short-term fill-in being Max Domi getting elevated in the lineup or perhaps Pontus Holmberg shifting to the middle
During the 10 minutes of overtime the Leafs had to play without him on Saturday
“It affected a big part of our power play,” said Nylander
“We had some looks,” Berube said of his PP1 without No
Recently, the Tavares Bulldogs announced the following slate of games for 2025

Among other teams on the Bulldogs' schedule are Citrus
South Lake and on the road against Umatilla

— The population has been growing significantly in one Lake County community
Tavares city leaders are considering an increase of municipal impact fees to keep up with the rising costs of services
fire and the parks and recreation department
Impact fees are one-time charges on new construction to help recover
the costs associated with infrastructure and any growth-related capital improvements
since the city of Tavares hadn’t raised its impact fees since 2006
She says her priority is finding ways to curb the growth happening in Tavares.
“We can’t afford any more growth even if we wanted
with our infrastructure and our roads and our water supply," she said
"Everything needs to be addressed right now and I’m not going to keep allowing all these homes and taking away from people who have lived here — and they have a water supply shortage
and they can’t get out on the highway because they have to sit through the light three or four times
Curbing the growth will come with a more expensive price tag on new homes and businesses for developers
"Since that’s what I was hearing from the residents
because to me it’s always about quality of life and I don’t want to be forced to build a house because someone needs a house,'" she said
"There’s plenty of other places in the state of Florida if you want to live in the state of Florida
Our people want to keep our city like it is."
The U.S Census Bureau says the population in Tavares was 13,951 in 2010
That doesn’t account for the growth that Tavares city leaders anticipate will come by 2034 — they are seeing an expected population of 28,161
city officials say there will come higher costs to compensate
developers would be paying just over $3,500 compared to the existing $1,058 impact fee
which accounts for more than three times the current amount
According to the 2025 Municipal Impact Fee Study conducted by the Raftelis consulting firm
recent updates to the Florida Impact Fee Act provides limitations on increasing impact fees
Those circumstances include large inflationary costs and “additional capital improvements based on a significant increase in population growth.”
fire and parks and recreation impact fees demonstrate significant and extraordinary capital needs that justify having the fully calculated fees implemented.”
According to information from the city of Tavares
the vote to raise impact fees requires a two-thirds approval from city commissioners
since the impact fee increase is greater than 50%
Pfister said she made the initial suggestion to council to raise the impact fees to help curb the growth happening in Tavares
because she doesn't want to see the city struck by mass development that leaves residents bearing the brunt by paying higher taxes
The first reading of the ordinance to increase these fees is set to take place at 4 p.m
While most of the attention has centered on forward Mitch Marner due to his combination of elite production and the fact that he is still at a prime age, John Tavares is also an intriguing player who could be hitting the market.
Even though Tavares is in his age-34 season, he remains a top-line scorer.
Through Tuesday's action he is averaging a point-per-game, has already scored 30 goals for the second time in the past three seasons and can still help drive an offense.
The age might scare some teams off, but he should still figure to be a highly sought after player on the open market.
Let's take a look at six potential landing spots for him as the 2024-25 regular season winds down.
But sometimes the most logical answer with pending free agents is staying in the exact spot where they already are. Teams do not usually let productive players get away, and playing for Toronto was something that was very important to Tavares when he initially signed there.
He is also still really good, and it is unlikely the Maple Leafs would find an immediate upgrade on the free-agent market.
Having said that, if they bow out early in the playoffs early again, they are going to have to start to seriously consider some sort of major change to their core.
Could that mean letting one of Tavares or Marner go? Or both? That remains to be seen, but the pressure is going to be on all of these guys in a couple of weeks.
Jared Silber/NHLI via Getty ImagesThe New York Rangers are going to have to do some soul-searching this offseason to figure out where this season went wrong and why the team has reached a plateau without getting over the hump.
There are problems. Many of them. And all of them significant.
They are unlikely to start tearing everything down, but it is not hard to imagine them making some sort of a major change at center. Especially after Mika Zibanejad’s disappointing 2024-25 campaign.
They need more consistency and production from that spot, and Tavares seems like the type of free agent the Rangers would go after: a big-name player who is also toward the end of their career.
It might also not be the worst idea if the price was right and there wasn't too much term.
Mark Blinch/NHLI via Getty ImagesFinding a capable and consistent No. 2 center has been a constant problem for the Colorado Avalanche ever since they lost Nazem Kadri in free agency a few years ago.
They attempted to fix it a year ago by trading for Casey Mittelstadt, but that did not work out as planned.
At this year’s deadline, they acquired both Brock Nelson and Charlie Coyle (in exchange for Mittelstadt) in the hopes they can get more out of the position once they get beyond Nathan MacKinnon.
Nelson has been the far more productive addition, but he is a pending unrestricted free agent after this season. While Coyle remains under contract, his play has not been what a Stanley Cup contender would want from a second-line center, and that was the case throughout his time in Boston in recent years prior to the trade.
He might work well as a third-line center, but they still need another scorer in the middle.
Tavares would be the best possible scoring option they could have at center on the open market, and Colorado might be an attractive option for Tavares if he is still searching for his first Stanley Cup this offseason.
and they are going to need to make some big changes this offseason to get back to the playoffs next year
Miller to the New York Rangers prior to the trade deadline
they have another big need down the middle
Especially after Filip Chytil (one of the key pieces they received in the Miller trade) has had his 2024-25 season prematurely ended due to another head injury
His short- and long-term future with the team and the league is in some doubt
That could open the door for the Canucks to be players in free agency
Tavares would easily be the most productive player on the Canucks and give them a legitimate No
Bruce Bennett/Getty ImagesThe Montreal Canadiens are going to be a fascinating team to follow this offseason
They are on track to make the playoffs this season
and their young core is only going to get better with the arrival of 2024 No
There's a lot to like about this team and its future
but it still has some issues that need to be ironed out before it becomes a serious contender
One of those issues is a second-line scoring center
Tavares would be a great fit behind Nick Suzuki and would also provide a young
up-and-coming team with an additional veteran presence
It would also allow Jake Evans to settle into more of a third-line role where he is perhaps best suited
Signing Tavares would not only annoy the fans of Montreal’s biggest rival
but it would also weaken that rival's lineup
Maddie Meyer/Getty ImagesThe Boston Bruins not only took a major step backwards during the 2024-25 season and missed the playoffs
but they also ended up being one of the worst teams in the NHL
Injuries to defensemen Charlie McAvoy and Hampus Lindholm did not help
nor did an unexpected down year from starting goalie Jeremy Swayman
this was always going to be a badly flawed team with one major hole in its lineup: the lack of a No
It has been a problem ever since Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci retired
and their decision to sign Elias Lindholm to a seven-year $50 million contract in free agency did not fix it
The question the Bruins have to ask is: Do they hit the reset button and accept a re-tooling or rebuild or do they try to bounce back and make some short-term
Tavares could be an intriguing option and perhaps the best option in free agency as far as top-line scoring centers go
That's after they survived a nerve-wracking Game 4 at home Saturday night against the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs

TORONTO -- John Tavares had a childhood that was saturated with hockey, from skating on the backyard rink at the home of his buddy and future NHL player Sam Gagner to playing on the Ontario Blues summer league team with Steven Stamkos as an 11-year-old
it appears the Toronto Maple Leafs forward is passing on that love of the game to his kids
on the ice at Scotiabank Arena with his two sons
It’s a good bet they’re his favorite linemates ever
“It’s cool to get them out on the big rink and take it all in and spend some time with them,” Tavares said
It has been a lot of fun sharing it with them all season long
Whether it’s watching Jace skate effortlessly around the rink or seeing Axton picking the top corner of the net with relative ease (again
it’s easy to tell they are following in their father’s footsteps
“It’s all day every day throughout the hockey season,” Tavares said
It has been a lot of fun just watching them grow as little kids and enjoy the game
what I love to do every day and they’ve taken to it themselves
if one of Dad’s lessons to the boys is adopting his work ethic
the proof is on display almost every day of the hockey season
Regularly one of the first players on the ice and last players off it on practice days
he has reached the 60-point mark (30 goals
31 assists) for the 13th time in his 16-season NHL career
including his 30th goal in a 5-2 loss at the Nashville Predators on Saturday
The Maple Leafs (42-25-3) remain tied with the Florida Panthers for first place in the Atlantic Division
two points ahead of the Tampa Bay Lightning
they can be buoyed by the fact that Tavares is showing no signs of slowing down
Tavares had two goals and an assist in Toronto’s 4-3 victory at the New York Rangers on Thursday to become the eighth active player with 1,100 points (486 goals
615 assists) as he works his way toward a place in the Hockey Hall of Fame one day
TOR@NYR: Tavares snaps it home for opening goal
His pal, Predators foward Steven Stamkos
seems destined for enshrinement down the road as well
The Predators forward has scored six goals in his past nine games
including the 578th of his NHL career in Nashville’s 4-1 loss to the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday
passing Hall of Famer Mark Recchi for 22nd on the all-time list
As kids in the Toronto area, Tavares and Stamkos played against each other a number of times before becoming teammates with the Blues, the summer league team that also featured future NHLers Alex Pietrangelo, Cody Hodgson and Michael Hutchinson
Stamkos and Tavares would go on to be selected No
1 in the NHL Draft in successive years; Stamkos by the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2008
especially now that they are dads with hockey-crazed kids
has loved Zambonis from the time he first started coming to rinks to see his dad play
another link to the sport between father and son
from being tots to teammates to hockey dads
and certainly where we’re at now,” Tavares said
you have more of an appreciation of things
but you just try to enjoy each and every day and never take it for granted
I think that’s part of the appreciation as you get older
“When you look back through your childhood
through junior hockey and earning the opportunity to play in the NHL
then trying to become an elite player and have success
and certainly then getting to this point in your career where you’re still having fun and playing at a high level
it’s always cool to see guys you grew up with have the careers they’ve had
an even more appreciation for what the game means and what it’s brought to your life.”
Tavares can become an unrestricted free agent on July 1 and has repeatedly said he wants to remain with the Maple Leafs
This much is certain: His consistency as almost a point-per-game player has been impressive
Stellantis NV's former CEO Carlos Tavares received a pay package last year totaling about $24 million (23 million euro) as the company navigated flagging sales and other problems that contributed to the executive's sudden departure in early December
Tavares also is receiving a combined $12.5 million (12 million euro) as part of his separation
the automaker's annual report released Thursday shows
The settlement deal includes a severance amount required under Dutch law as well as a 10 million-euro performance incentive to be paid this year
with its business in North American especially struggling with falling market share and an adjusted operating income that fell 80%
The company says it expects to pick a new CEO by the first half of this year
The poor 2024 results meant more than 38,000 Stellantis workers represented by the United Auto Workers will get far lower profit-sharing bonuses this year of about $3,780
which had followed the carmaker's record profits in 2023
Tavares' pay package for 2024 didn't come close to the more than $39 million (36.5 million euro) compensation he got in 2023
which made him the top-paid traditional auto executive and drew the ire of UAW leaders and members as they faced job losses and other cost-cutting last year
But the settlement agreement payments nearly make up the difference
Tavares' compensation was similar to his total in 2022
and included about 2 million euro in base salary
more than 20 million euro worth of long-term incentives
as well as 500,000 euro in "post retirement benefit expense."
Tavares made about 350 times as much as the average Stellantis employee compensation of $68,644 (65,993 euro) last year
will report their executive compensations in the coming weeks
TORONTO -- John Tavares has no regrets about the life-changing decision he made almost seven years ago to leave the New York Islanders and join the Toronto Maple Leafs
“Aside from not being able to help bring a Stanley Cup here
it’s been everything I could hope for,” the Maple Leafs forward told NHL.com this week
who’s in the final season of the seven-year
$77 million contract ($11 million average annual value) he signed July 1
continues to reiterate that his goal is to re-sign with Toronto
I would love to stay and hope it works out,” he said
the focus is on the present and the future
It’s a narrative that always seems to be brought up to him whenever the Maple Leafs meet the Islanders like they will at Scotiabank Arena on Saturday (7 p.m
He definitely has no shortage of things to look forward to
After getting two assists in a 6-3 win at the Buffalo Sabres on Friday, Tavares ranks third on the Maple Leafs with 31 points (15 goals, 16 assists) in 32 games. He had his 14th career hat trick in a 5-3 win against the Sabres at Scotiabank Area on Sunday, and the two assists Friday gave him 600 for his career. He’s also second among Toronto forwards in plus-minus (plus-8), trailing only Bobby McMann
“I’m just really confident in my game right now at both ends,” he said
coach Craig Berube is pleased with what he’s seen
“His preparation is unequalled,” Berube said
“It starts in the summer and never falters
both in the offensive and defensive zones.”
BUF@TOR: Tavares propels Maple Leafs with natural hat trick vs
His efficiency at playing a 200-foot game was one of the reasons Tavares attracted so much interest heading into free agency in 2018
was the fact that he was coming off an 84-point season (37 goals
47 assists) in 82 games with the Islanders
the team he’d spent his first nine NHL seasons with
invited the Maple Leafs along with the Islanders
Dallas Stars and Tampa Bay Lightning to meet with his client at the agent’s CAA offices in Los Angeles
“(Toronto) made a very influential case,” Brisson told NHL.com
The chance to be with such a talented team was big
But when you add that a player can return to his hometown to play
But that’s one thing that was unique to Toronto the others could not offer.”
Tavares said the experience of playing for his hometown team has exceeded his expectations
and it’s nice that my parents and relatives are close,” he said
part of Tavares’ routine in Toronto has become writing his three kids’ names -- sons Jace and Axton and daughter Rae -- on tape near the top of his sticks
“Never ever in my wildest dreams did I think we're going to live through a pandemic,” he said
referring to the COVID-19 virus that saw the NHL
“So I was very fortunate from the standpoint that I didn't have to deal with crossing the border and quarantines
and not seeing family for a couple of years
and the type of bonds that they've created
“It’s been really amazing to share playing here with the kids
They've been a big part of it and gotten to experience it with me
he continues to take the high road when it comes to the Islanders
Despite being razzed repeatedly the past six-plus years whenever he plays against them in New York for his decision to leave and come to Toronto
he says he’ll always be appreciative of the franchise that picked him No
They're very passionate and very protective of their team and their club
And tremendous history and tradition is there as well
and obviously what they built in the 1980s
So I got to feel that for my nine years there
and they really embraced me and were a big part of my development on and off the ice
So, too, has his experience been with the Maple Leafs. In fact, entering Saturday, he is just two points shy (450) of catching Hall of Famer Doug Gilmour (452) on the franchise’s all-time scoring list
I never take it for granted how fortunate I am to play and live here,” he said
The only blemish in his time with the Maple Leafs revolves around the team’s postseason shortcomings
they’ve won just one Stanley Cup Playoff series
that coming in the Eastern Conference First Round in 2023 against the Tampa Bay Lightning
Fittingly it was Tavares who scored the series-winning goal in overtime of Game 6 that propelled the Maple Leafs to the second round
he and his teammates have higher aspirations than that
“Winning the Cup here remains the goal,” he said
“It would be a dream fulfilled for a lot of us.”
the Maple Leafs will turn to John Tavares to guide the way
The 34-year-old former captain has been excellent in the first-round matchup against the Senators
He has the chance to continue his hot start in the postseason with another strong showing in Game 5
Tavares is even more important with the chance to eliminate the Senators for another crucial reason. When the Leafs have their opportunity to end a series
NHL.com writer Dave McCarthy cleverly pointed out that in Toronto's last 13 opportunities to eliminate their postseason opponent
and William Nylander have gone dry offensively
The trio has combined for just six goals in those 13 contests
the Leafs can't put teams away and often let series go longer than they should
Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner and William Nylander have combined for six goals in 13 games since 2017 where a win would have eliminated an opponent.#LeafsForever are 1-12 in those games
He has three goals and two assists in five games
He's found success at even strength and on the power play
with his first two goals of the series coming with the man advantage
According to MoneyPuck's game data
he's excelling in two key areas in this series: getting shots on net and rebound generation
Tavares is embodying the mantra of "no bad shot in the playoffs," and getting everything he can towards the goalie
The shots on net from Tavares are also giving the goalie trouble
He's created four rebounds with his shots on goal
which far exceed MoneyPuck's expected model
It's a small piece of the offensive puzzle
but it demonstrates that Tavares is putting shots on net that the goalie is having a bit more difficulty corralling

— The State Attorney's Office for the Fifth Judicial District announced Thursday that prosecutors would pursue the death penalty for a woman and her boyfriend accused of abusing her son for months and ultimately killing him
Kimberly Mills and Andre Walker have been indicted on charges of first-degree murder
felony first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse
According to information from the Tavares Police Department
Mills and Walker are accused of bringing 10-year-old Xavier Williams to the hospital on Feb
covered in bruises and burns in various stages of healing
According to emergency workers at the hospital
Williams was near death when he was brought to the hospital.
"The doctor advised (Williams) was in critical condition and they were not sure if he was going to survive," a TPD police arrest affidavit said
Williams ultimately suffered cardiac arrest and died from his injuries at a later date
State Attorney Bill Gladson said the pair are accused of abusing Williams from Dec
20 — allegedly using items like a dumbbell
flashlights and a copper rod to strike him
TAVARES — A child who endured brutal child abuse in Tavares remains in critical condition
according to the Tavares Police Department
The department "is heartbroken as we share the devastating details surrounding the tragic abuse of a 10-year-old boy," a press statement says
"This innocent child has endured unimaginable pain at the hands of those who were meant to protect him."
officers were called to Advent Health Waterman
where they were met with a case that "shook police to their core," according to the statement
in cardiac arrest and visibly covered in bruises and burn marks
brought him to the hospital but fled when they learned law enforcement was on the way
Mills later returned with the child’s younger brother
"Through the courage of this young sibling
detectives uncovered the horrifying details of the abuse," the Tavares Police said in their report
"This little boy revealed how both he and his older brother suffered unspeakable torment
His bravery in sharing these truths has given our team the determination to ensure that justice is served."
a search of the boy's home uncovered a 6-foot ladder
Police said the boy was restrained while weights were dropped onto his exposed stomach
Detectives also found a thick insulated copper wire
leaving him defenseless," the press statement says
"The sheer brutality of these acts is indescribable."
Mills and Walker have been arrested and face charges of aggravated child abuse
"Thanks to the tireless work of our detectives and the State Attorney’s Office
a crucial step in seeking justice for these boys," the Tavares PD statement says
"The Tavares Police Department and the Tavares Police Charity are committed to supporting these children during this incredibly difficult time
We are accepting gift card donations to help provide care and comfort for the boys and their family
Donations can be made in person at the Tavares Police Department or online through the Tavares Police Charity’s Facebook page," the statement says
According to a document on file with the Lake County court clerk
the defense request for bail for Walker was denied on Wednesday
Tavares left the game early in overtime following a hit to the head that triggered removal by an NHL concussion spotter.
Tavares explained the sequence and why he was removed from the potential series-clincher
“I don’t think I really need to explain it,” Tavares said
“It’s pretty obvious what happened on the play
But just move on from it and go out there and keep competing and trust that the refs are going to make the right calls.”
Tavares missed more than 10 minutes of game action, including an overtime power play that the Leafs failed to capitalize on. Ultimately, Toronto fell 4-3, failing to punch its ticket to the second round
The veteran center said he was unaware that a four-minute Maple Leafs power play was happening while he underwent the SCAT5 evaluation in the league’s designated room
“I had no idea that there was a power play,” Tavares said
“I was obviously pulled out and I had to go through the protocol.”
Toronto Maple Leafs forward John Tavares (91) skates ahead of Ottawa Senators forward Drake Batherson (19) at Scotiabank Arena
Leafs coach Craig Berube voiced frustration with the play after seeing replays
“I don’t like the hit,” Berube said
Tavares said he feels ready to continue playing through the series with game 5 between the Maple Leafs and the Senators scheduled for Tuesday night in Toronto
“A little bit of soreness just in my jaw and cheek area
”Felt good on the ice today.”
TORONTO — Ottawa Senators forward Ridly Greig will not face any supplemental discipline after delivering a high cross-check to John Tavares of the Toronto Maple Leafs during Game 1 of the Battle of Ontario
according to a source familiar with the decision
Sunday’s game produced 52 minutes in penalties
but did not include any infractions the NHL’s department of player safety believed rose to the level of a fine or suspension
Greig was initially assessed a five-minute cross-checking major penalty after getting his stick up and striking Tavares in the neck or head area as the Leafs player finished a hit on him early in the second period
referees Brian Pochmara and Garret Rank reduced Greig’s penalty to a two-minute cross-checking minor

The Leafs scored on the ensuing power play — one of three man-advantage goals they produced during a 6-2 win
Toronto coach Craig Berube held up five fingers on the bench during the penalty review
seemingly lobbying for Greig’s cross-checking infraction to be a five-minute penalty
“Call the league!” to reporters as he walked off the post-game podium after being asked about the sequence
“That’s not my call,” Berube said multiple times
“The referees and the league will look at things and make the calls they make
We’ve got to focus on what we need to do the next game
I thought they made some attempts at our goalie and sliding into him and things like that
We’ve got to focus on ourselves and what we need to do
Greig had an effective night for the Senators
scoring one of the team’s goals and consistently getting under the skin of Leafs players
he almost ended up in the Toronto bench and saw Auston Matthews grab his stick and break it
he swept the feet out from Leafs goalie Anthony Stolarz after being stick checked by Mitch Marner
You just know Greig took advantage of that opportunity. 💀 pic.twitter.com/b1YZQv15fG
— Everyday Sens (@EverydaySens) April 21, 2025
There’s history between the Leafs and Greig
after he famously hammered a slapshot into an empty net during a February 2024 game
Toronto’s Morgan Rielly was suspended five games for cross-checking Greig as he celebrated the goal
While the Leafs didn’t necessarily leave the rink expecting to see Greig disciplined for his cross-check on Tavares in Game 1
But they’ve made it a point at the outset of these playoffs to try to avoid getting drawn into any unnecessary penalties by seeking retribution
“I’m just going to let the refs and the league handle it,” Tavares said
“I’m just going to compete hard and try to fight for every inch you can and
you fight through it and you just continue to play.”

TAVARES — A grand jury has indicted Kimberley Mills and her boyfriend, Andre D. Walker, on first-degree murder charges in the torturous death of her son, Xavier Williams
State Attorney Bill Gladson announced at an April 3 press conference that prosecutors will be seeking the death penalty
Lead Tavares Police Detective Doug Roberts
told reporters the investigation was “a test of strength.”
said word of the indictment was “good news for us and for justice
Defense teams routinely hire medical experts
psychologists and others to try to convince jurors to spare their clients
Prosecutors listed five aggravating factors they intend to prove as they seek the ultimate punishment
The first comes into play if they are convicted of capital murder
The others are if the crimes occurred during violent felonies
The notice of seeking the death penalty notes that the crime was especially heinous
and that the defendants were in a position of familial authority
The probable cause affidavit spells out an alleged horror story of the 10-year-old being duct-taped to a ladder and having a 10-pound dumbbell dropped on his abdomen
and him and his younger brother being whipped with a metal rod and hit with a flashlight
Gladson refused to discuss the younger brother’s statements at the April 3 news conference
The first inkling of the abuse came on Feb
when Walker drove to Advent Health Waterman Hospital at 9:59 p.m
and he rushed into the emergency room shouting
A nurse and a technician rushed out to the couple’s car to find Mills doing CPR on Xavier in the back seat
The ER nurse who took over life-saving efforts noticed bruising and asked Mills what happened
Xavier started vomiting and then he was like this,” the police records say
a Tavares Police officer noticed severe bruising
several burn marks on the boy's stomach and right bicep
The doctor diagnosed an arterial bleed in his abdomen and several bruises in various stages of healing
He was in critical condition until he died
Mills was interviewed by investigators from the state Department of Children and Families
“She refused to say how Xavier sustained the injuries but did give the name of the male subject with her,” the police report states
Gladson said he was unaware if DCF had any involvement with the family before Feb
A search of the couple’s home turned up several pieces of evidence
used paper towels and clothing with pieces of duct tape attached
Xavier’s 8-year-old brother described the torturous punishment
In addition to the copper rod and dumbbell
the adults sometimes pummeled them with boxing gloves
just a mattress without sheets leaning against the wall
Evidence technicians also found stained clothing nearby
Police said Mills meticulously covered up the boys’ injuries by having them wear long-sleeved shirts and ordering them not to say a word about the abuse to anyone outside the family
Previous coverage: New charges, vigil announced after Tavares 10-year-old dies from injuries. What we know
Tavares Police Chief Sarah Coursey said she was confident justice would be done
Gladson urged the public to continue to be supportive of the family

LOS ANGELES — What explains John Tavares’ goal-scoring bonanza this season
it’s pretty simple: A world-class shooter is having the best shooting season of his NHL career — and in a contract year
Tavares has scored 33 goals on 19 percent shooting
and not only because Tavares is 34 now and in his 16th NHL season — a time
It’s also odd because last season Tavares had the worst shooting season of his career: 29 goals in 80 games on 10 percent shooting and a mid-season dry spell that saw him score once in 13 games
But that doesn’t feel like the whole story
Arguably no player on the Maple Leafs today (no player that I’ve seen) spends more time on the ice fine-tuning his game than Tavares
part of his scoring resurgence this season is tied to that never-ending refinement
the former NHLer turned Leafs development coach
after practice on the regular to work on shooting off the left leg
all of the varying shots that Tavares will attempt in games
“Certainly around the bottom of the circles to the crease obviously is an important area for me,” Tavares said
“That’s probably where I get most of my chances
Ensuring strengths remain strengths is a big thing for Tavares
Tavares has been particularly lethal from mid-range
shooting almost 25 percent there — just about the best there is and good for the NHL’s 97th percentile this season according to NHL EDGE tracking
There’s another side to the story that’s relevant to all of that: While he’s never shot better in the NHL
Tavares’ shot volume hasn’t been this low since he was a teenager with the New York Islanders
He still shoots fairly often relative to most NHLers
Tavares is mustering 8.7 shots on 14.9 attempts per 60 minutes this season
Those are the lowest marks of his Leafs career as well as the lowest of any year since he was a rookie on the Island
The tumble has really come at five-on-five
where Tavares is managing only 6.7 shots on 11.7 attempts per 60
he fired nine shots on almost 17 attempts on a per-hour basis
Tavares hasn’t struggled to generate shots like this at five-on-five
His line that year: 6.3 shots on 11.7 attempts per 60
And yet Tavares has scored a whole whack of goals at five-on-five so far — 18 in all
topping even his debut season with the Leafs when he scored an astounding 33 five-on-five goals while shooting 16.5 percent
Tavares is also shooting nearly 21 percent on the power play
His 11 power-play goals are already tied for the fourth-most he has scored in a single season
he has also matched a career high with four empty-net goals
“Maybe at times I’ve just been a little more consistent,” Tavares said of his shooting
“But maybe that’s easy to say when it’s going in.”
It’s the steep drop-off in shot generation that’s worth pondering for the Leafs’ front office
Is that a sign of predictable decline lurking just below the surface of all that scoring
Is it a product of head coach Craig Berube’s system
which has the Leafs generating fewer shots and opportunities overall
Brad Treliving and company have to be wondering what kind of impact Tavares can have if his shot attempts continue to tick downward and the shooting inevitably cools off somewhat
What is he worth to them then — especially if playing centre full-time eventually stops being part of the equation
Tavares’ career shooting percentage before this season was 12.8 percent
That kind of shooting on this kind of volume would put him at about 22 goals right now — 11 fewer than his current total
if they decide to extend Tavares’ contract
probably have to readjust their expectations even after this season’s explosion and begin to envision him more as someone likely to provide 20-25 goals in the next season or two
Tavares has already become one of only 12 players since 2010 to score 30 or more in an age-34 or older season
He is among the greatest shooters in recent NHL history and will soon join the exclusive 500 goals club (48 members)
He is at 489 and has a chance to climb into the top 40 all-time if he keeps scoring at a reasonable clip for the foreseeable future
There’s no doubt that he will continue to work at ensuring that it remains a strength

more than $24 million (23.09 million euros) in total compensation last year
The news, included in a filing Thursday with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, comes a day after the automaker announced a 70% drop in net profit in 2024 compared with the year prior. The company said it had a net profit of $5.8 billion (5.5 billion euros) for the year
but a net loss of $133 million (127 million euros) in the second half
Tavares left Stellantis abruptly at the beginning of December
although a search for his successor was already underway as the company faced an avalanche of issues
ranging from dropping sales to fights with its dealers
Tavares’ compensation, which was down almost 37% from $39.5 million (36.5 million euros) in 2023, was 350 times that of the average worker’s last year, which was listed as $68,609 (65,993 euros) and which had also dropped from $73,195 (79,404 euros), according to the filing. Profit-sharing checks of $3,780 for the company's UAW members
will fall almost 73% from what was paid in 2024
More: Stellantis says UAW members could see $3,780 profit-sharing checks, a big drop from 2024
More: Stellantis reports net loss in second half of 2024
which had been criticized for numerous rounds of job cuts
also reported a drop in the average number of employees from 271,292 to 259,118
Tavares’ compensation included a $2.08 million (2 million euros) base salary
fringe benefits worth $74,047 (71,224 euros)
a long-term incentive worth $21.33 million (20.5 million euros) and postretirement benefits expense of $519,821 (500,000 euros)
The filing noted that “taking into consideration company performance and the principles of pay for performance in our remuneration approach
the CEO and executive leadership of the company received no annual performance bonus in 2024.”
Tavares’ separation agreement calls for a $2.08 million (2 million euros) severance and a $10.4 million (10 million euros) “milestone” connected to an incentive plan to be paid this year
References were also made to company shares as part of the agreement
but a company spokeswoman said those were reflected in the 2024 compensation
The filing also noted compensation for Chairman John Elkann at $2.9 million (2.8 million euros) and Vice Chairman Robert Peugeot at $229,142 (220,405 euros)

John Tavares is week to week for the Toronto Maple Leafs with a lower-body injury and was placed on injured reserve Thursday
The center left practice early Wednesday after he took an awkward fall along the boards during a power-play drill
"Week to week right now," Maple Leafs coach Craig Berube said
"It's unfortunate [it happened] in practice
but it is what it is and we have to move on from it right now
he's been an all situational guy for us pretty much and he's done a great job for us."

NHL.com independent correspondent Dave McCarthy contributed to this report
John Tavares addresses the media ahead of tonight's game against the Calgary Flames
It’s tempting to think that with the season John Tavares is putting together at age 34, the Toronto Maple Leafs should have already extended his contract
Wait — and remain steadfast in doing so until after the season
Let’s start here: None of this waiting diminishes anything Tavares is accomplishing right now
on pace for around 30 goals and 70 points in the final season of the seven-year
Yet regular-season performance hasn’t ever really been the issue for Tavares
It’s what comes after that’s been the problem
A team that’s had so little success in the postseason should not be rushing to lock up another piece of a roster that has yet to prove its mettle when it matters
Another early playoff exit and the front office may want to tweak the foundation of a roster in a way that doesn’t include a long-time core piece such as Tavares (or Marner)
Related to all that is Tavares’ playoff performance in Toronto
Tavares posted eight goals and 16 points in 25 games or 0.32 goals and 0.64 points per game
That’s down from the 0.39 goals and 0.93 points per game he managed in those three regular seasons
Zero in on just the last two series though — seven first-round games against Boston last spring and five second-round games against Florida in round two in 2023 — and there’s this: Tavares has produced one goal and three points in 12 games
a very minimal offensive impact when the Leafs needed more
Tavares was forced to play the thorniest minutes against the Bruins
buried in defensive zone draws while matched up with Boston’s No
The second-round series with Florida was low-scoring and the Leafs were vaulted there by Tavares’ series-clinching overtime goal against Tampa in round one
his postseason performance as a Leaf has been just OK: 12 goals and 24 points in 37 complete games from ages 28 to 33
Tavares had a strong start under first-year head coach Craig Berube. His impact has waned in more recent weeks and it remains to be seen whether this particular style — the Berube style — will prove more beneficial for Tavares
The Leafs should be determined to see it first before they cement Tavares’ place on the roster moving forward
let alone determine how many years and what price is right on his next contract
(What happens to this management group if the team falls short again?)
That’s the other thing that’s easily overlooked in all this — a Tavares extension isn’t about now
How much should the Leafs expect him to contribute
Where does Tavares slot into the lineup next season
do the Leafs anticipate Tavares moving to the wing
what’s the plan to replace him in the middle
(Does the answer come at the trade deadline?)
The scary thing with players in their mid to late 30s is how suddenly the bottom can drop out
And there have been growing hints of a decline in Tavares’ performance
including career lows in the rate of shot attempts and high-danger chances he is generating at five-on-five
What has to be encouraging for the Leafs, when it comes to a Tavares commitment, is the degree to which he will maximize every little thing he can control when it comes to his performance and thus longevity
And that means taking extra care and caution on a contract
Last season, Steven Stamkos put together an even better version of the season that Tavares is tracking toward this year: 40 goals and 81 points in 79 games for the Tampa Bay Lightning
The Lightning not only decided to have Stamkos — their long-time captain
a Cup winner and one of the greatest players in franchise history — play out his contract amid all that and a postseason in which he scored five goals in five games
they let him walk last summer when he wouldn’t agree to the contract they saw fit for him
Another thing the Leafs front office needs to at least ponder is whether there’s a better way to spend that money
can they use the estimated $6-7-plus million cap dollars spent annually on Tavares’ next deal on someone younger
with more upside and/or a skill set that’s more in contrast to the team’s other stars
That’s basically what the Lightning did in replacing Stamkos, who just turned 35, with Jake Guentzel
(Stamkos has struggled offensively in Nashville this season; Guentzel is on pace for 40 goals.)
What if pending UFA Sam Bennett wanted to come to play for the Leafs this summer
He’s nowhere near Tavares as an offensive force
elevated his game during Florida’s back-to-back runs to the Stanley Cup Final as well as with Team Canada at the 4 Nations Face-Off
Bennett will be eyeing a longer deal than Tavares
obviously: maximum term in all likelihood if he reaches unrestricted free agency
His annual price point might be higher too
a $7 million cap hit for a 29-year-old Bennett be more suitable for the Leafs than a 3-4-year deal with a $6-7 million cap hit for a 35-year-old Tavares
But it’s worth considering after the season once Brad Treliving’s front office sees how their team and Tavares perform down the stretch and
(There’s also a certain player in Edmonton who can become a free agent after next season for whom the Leafs might want to preserve added flexibility
It’s possible too that the Leafs acquire a centre ahead of the trade deadline with term on his contract who could even replace Tavares beyond this season
if not supplement him in the middle for the Leafs
There’s potential leverage there in contract talks from the team’s perspective
Another advantage the Leafs hold in negotiations with Marner and Tavares
is the hometown edge: Tavares won’t want to go anywhere else
to procure a meaningful hometown discount when the pressure point of actual free agency draws nearer
Wait and watch is what the Leafs should do. And Tavares? He’ll do what he’s done all season. He’ll put his head down and keep trying to prove himself all over

Sharing the update Wednesday on social media
the Tavares Police Department said it was responding to the requests of many concerned citizens
adding it was still diligently working on the case
Kimberley Mills, 37, and Andre Walker
were arrested in February after the two took Mills’ 10-year-old son to the hospital
The boy was suffering from cardiac arrest — covered in bruises
and other injuries — and was still in critical condition at the time of this report
Upon learning that law enforcement was on their way to the hospital
who told investigators about how “he and his older brother suffered unspeakable torment,” police said
adding his bravery gave the agency “the determination to ensure that justice is served.”
Investigators said these items were used to restrain the older child — his hands bound above his head — while the weight was intentionally dropped onto his exposed stomach
“The sheer brutality of these acts is indescribable,” the release states

We are excited to announce that Stellantis has finalized their employee leasing agreement at their joint venture battery plant with Samsung SDI
This means over 1,000 new jobs for UAW members in Kokomo
at a time when Stellantis is trying to cut its way out of its own mismanagement
We won this leasing agreement in our 2023 contract negotiations
but under the failed leadership of Carlos Tavares
the company delayed making good on their commitment to workers in Kokomo
This pattern of going back on agreements and violating our contract was part of what led us to call for Tavares’s resignation
We look forward to continuing this progress in honoring our contract with new Stellantis leadership that respects hardworking UAW members and is ready to keep its promise to America by investing in the people who build its products
Tavares’ resignation is a major step in the right direction for a company that has been mismanaged and a workforce that has been mistreated for too long
Tavares is leaving behind a mess of painful layoffs and overpriced vehicles sitting on dealership lots
thousands of UAW members at Stellantis have been calling for the company to fire Tavares due to his reckless mismanagement of the company
We are pleased to see the company responding to pressure and correcting course
We will keep using all means available to hold Stellantis accountable and enforce the contract we won in 2023
including advancing strikeable grievances until Stellantis keeps its investment commitments to workers in Belvidere
We are looking forward to sitting down with the new CEO
backed up by thousands of UAW Stellantis members ready to take action
and discussing their plan to keep making world-class vehicles here in the United States
