Tega Cay has a deer problem: There are around 1,000 of the four-legged critters in this small city
City officials have contracted out the culling and sterilization of these deer for the past two years — and one city’s deer problem has become another community’s food solution
sharpshooters working for Lowcountry Wildlife Specialist hunted 80 deer and sent the meat to a processor in coastal South Carolina
The city then donated the resulting venison to the Catawba Nation
the line for the meat counter wrapped around the inside of the Catawba Nation food distribution center in Rock Hill
Michelle Payne stepped up to the freezer to fill her basket with venison
Her granddaughter had sent her on a mission:
can you pick up Bambi while we’re there?’” Payne said
opened the freezer and loaded Payne’s basket
backstrap and rump sat stacked in a long chest freezer
The tribe’s food sovereignty coordinator Hayley Brezeale said the market operates on a point system
Every household in Catawba Nation gets a monthly allotment:
like the venison meat that we’re providing today isn’t going to go toward any individual’s points,” Brezeale said
Catawba citizens can buy more than just meat with their monthly 60 points
Brezeale said they distribute about $60,000 worth of free goods each month
Brezeale walked down an aisle and pulled a vacuum-sealed bag of pecans off the shelf
She said these pecans came from a local forager
The grant that funds the market ensures that all the food is local or minimally processed
The center must purchase goods from within 400 miles of Catawba Reservation
In a world where food can account for nearly a third of a household’s annual carbon footprint
that can be good for local farms and the environment
Catawba Nation farmers supply a lot of that food
“We’ve had people — Catawba citizens — start their own gardens at home in order to sell to us and to teach their children about growing,” Knight said
The program has done a lot for food security in the area as well as the local economy
Knight said most of the food comes from marginalized farmers
The food distribution center partnered with The Country Carrot
“They were actually on the verge of closing their doors down before we came along with this program
they have actually moved into a bigger building,” Knight said
Jordan Tashquinth came to the distribution center with his family
He moved to Catawba Nation from the Midwest
“It’s a pretty cool program that lets native people get a little bit of food supplements,” Tashquinth said
so the extra meat at the market was a pleasant surprise
“A lot of native recipes are pretty simple,” Tashquinth said
— A Tega Cay man is using his personal experience to help remind all that listening to your body can save your life
Stephen Gourlay is recovering from a heart attack he suffered before Christmas
Gourlay says he experienced a heart attack for 24 hours before he even realized his condition
At the time Gourlay had been diagnosed with the Flu
He says he initially believed the symptoms he experienced during the heart attack were just a by-product of his sickness
Gourlay felt pressure in the center of his back as well as severe indigestion
“It felt like I had gas trapped in my lungs and I needed to burp
but I couldn’t burp,” Gourlay said of his symptoms
He hoped to avoid a visit to the emergency room and even took a Tums which briefly made him feel better
Gourlay said he experienced the symptoms for 24 full hours and he even attended his grandchildren’s soccer match during the time period
It wasn’t until Gourlay’s wife and son stepped in and convinced him to visit a Doctor that Gourlay actually did
Gourlay said it only took minutes for a doctor to identify that he did suffer a heart attack
According to Gourlay he experienced a widowmaker heart attack
“It scares me now,” Gourlay said
He owes his comfort to the medical team which performed a life saving procedure on him to effectively clear his blocked artery
Gourlay compared the staff at Rock Hill’s Piedmont Medical Center to choreographed dancers who worked in unison to heal his heart
explained the widowmaker heart attack is seen as severely deadly due to the way it blocks the left anterior descending artery within the heart
Elias detailed the procedure to unblock the widowmaker
The procedure can last between 60 and 90 minutes and utilizes cardiac catheterization which allows doctors to feed a catheter through a persons groin or wrist and into the heart
A doctor can then identify the blockage and use a stent to unclog it
Gourlay said he felt amazing after his procedure and within half an hour he was joking and laughing with the nurses who helped him
Gourlay is nearing two months since his initial heart attack
He visited a doctor Wednesday to check in and was told his heart has improved dramatically
Gourlay now exercises daily and has switched to a healthier diet which has allowed him to lose 30 lbs
He hopes his experience can be a warning to others to trust your body and to act fast when things feel wrong
Piedmonty cardiologists say heart attack symptoms can appear differently depending on the person and their condition
as well as avoiding smoking are all things that can help to prevent a heart attack

The decision came during Monday night’s council meeting, and puts a company called White Buffalo in charge of the operation. In addition to the sterilization, the plan also includes culling another 80 deer.
In late January, city leaders voted to cull 160 deer. Only 36 were killed, despite a price tag of nearly $100,000.

Mayor Pro Tem Carmen Miller said that after the lackluster results from the previous effort
a different approach is being taken this time
“I think none of us have the appetite,” Miller said of a potential repeat
The cost of the sterilization-culling plan will be even more than the previous one
The operation is anticipated to begin in October or November of this year
the next step is for White Buffalo to submit the necessary documents and permits to the SC Department of Natural Resources on the city’s behalf

TEGA CAY, S.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A Tega Cay city councilman has been censured by his fellow board members following a vote at Monday night’s regular meeting
meaning even Scott Shirley himself approved the official act of disapproval
engaged in conduct violative of the values and principles expected of City Council members
as the governing and legislative body of the City
offensive and inflammatory posts on social media including posts that could insinuate support of acts of violence or vigilantism if disruptive persons came into the City limits.”
The document also says the posts demonstrate “disrespect for the office and position of a City Council member and is a disservice to the citizens” of Tega Cay.
Shirley said before the vote that the comments were taken out of context.
“Referring to young man did not incite violence,” he said
“Kyle Rittenhouse defended himself by shooting three
… I was not advocating violence or vigilantism
I was advocating free speech and bearing arms.”
Mayor Chris Gray challenged everyone to “think before we speak.” He also brought up that this is Holy Week on the Christian calendar
He will have climbed upon the cross for everyone,” he said
“I would encourage us all to give grace this week
especially.” Gray still voted for the censure

Council members expressed gratitude to residents and staff for their engagement and highlighted the importance of upcoming community events
TEGA CAY, S.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — More than six months after “lackluster” results
city leaders of Tega Cay have approved a new agreement that will allow a different company to take a crack at the culling attempt of the deer population
Queen City News has followed the various chapters in this fight to reduce the number of deer within the neighborhoods
In August, city leaders announced it had agreed with the company White Buffalo, to oversee the sterilization of 200 deer
city leaders voted 4-1 to approve an agreement with another company that will handle the “culling” side of the approach
The South Carolina company did not have a representative at Monday’s meeting
David Henderson with the company spoke with city leaders at length weeks before the decision
PREVIOUS: Tega Cay officials continue work on deer population with new community survey
He told them he does “have reasonable confidence,” that his approach will be successful
City council leaders admitted that the first approach failed
because of the heavy limitations the sharpshooters were under
will have the ability to draft out specific locations they feel would be the best location to target
and will have more discretion as to whether those locations need to change
Henderson explained that “on my site visits it is incredibly likely,” to cull 80 deer
The agreement will allow the culling of 80 deer
with the option to increase that if the goal is met
Henderson will be the only sharpshooter and will be followed by a law enforcement agent
While certain details have yet to be ironed out
he told city council members in early September that he is confident he can hit the 80 mark over the span of about a week
This approach will also happen after close to 200 deer are sterilized by White Buffalo
which could pose challenges for the culling efforts
“A significant percentage of the deer that you encounter on your route and at your signs
that’s something that could impact the efficiency,” he explained
The agreement passed with 4 out of 5 approvals
Councilmember Brian Carter stressed he will continue to vote against the culling efforts
He has stated in the past that he does not have confidence that the efforts will be a long-term solution
The sterilization is expected to begin in late October into early November
The culling efforts will begin after that and are expected to be complete by mid-December
TEGA CAY, S.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — It’s being called the biggest deer sterilization project ever done in the U.S.
Wildlife management company White Buffalo has successfully sterilized 200 female deer
To give you an idea of the scope of the problem
Tega Cay is a city spanning just 4.5 square miles
said that’s about eight times as many deer as you would see in communities with the population under control
“I’ve been doing this over 30 years and you know
this is the second highest deer densities I’ve ever worked with,” he said
Starting October 21 and running until the beginning of November
DeNicola and his team at White Buffalo were on the ground in Tega Cay
hard at work to sterilize hundreds of female deer
“We try to keep that whole timeline from the time they’re darted until they’re released to about an hour,” he said
That process starts at night when crews inject an anesthetic into the animal using a dart
they put lubricant and a mask over its eyes to keep the deer from being stimulated during the process
Then it’s to the operating table to remove the deer’s ovaries
“They get loaded back in the pickup truck,” said DeNicola
“They get brought back proximate to where they were captured and kind of a quieter area
other things that might startle them or create harm.”
They inject the deer with a reversal drug to wake them up and they end up back in the wild with white tags in their ears
DeNicola said he’s required to put an identifying marker because the anesthesia drugs used for the procedure are not FDA-approved
“If someone were to hunt that deer or if it got hit by a car and someone were to utilize it for consumption
there’s a 45-day withdrawal from the time that that animal’s handled,” he said
so the sterilization team can monitor the deer year after year and track survival rates
sharpshooters will come in to cull some deer this winter
city leaders will reevaluate the population and see if they need to take any other control measures

White Buffalo said that of the 201 sterilized deer
only one was confirmed to have died after it was released back into its habitat
Twenty deer were fitted with location-tracking collars
