We pre-gamed by having dinner with two other couple friends at Little Italy of Tellico Village which is in the same shopping center as the theater One of the other couples made reservations in their name and was already waiting at a table for six when The Spouse and I arrived which covers a representative number of bases without presenting an overwhelming number of options Appetizers range from shrimp cocktail to fried mushrooms to stuffed jalapeños We were content with the buttery garlic knots set out on the table as freebies Multiple menu sections offer up a wide range of Italian fare including more than a dozen salads as well as gyros and kebabs The Pasta Specialties listings feature nearly 20 dishes eggplant Parmesan and the French Quarter Pasta Skillet — penne pasta and sauteed onions and peppers in either a creamy Parmesan or spicy marinara sauce The Spouse ordered the homemade lasagna ($14.95) from this section and chose a side salad over soup There’s also a separate section of some 20 entrees steeped in Italian-cuisine tradition One of our friends ordered the veal Marsala ($17.95) with a side salad Three of our party ordered a stromboli or a calzone depending on the ingredients (by definition strombolis are not made with ricotta cheese) Our particular configurations were a calzone with Italian sausage a stromboli with Italian sausage and a stromboli with green peppers and extra cheese I decided to order one of 13 signature pizzas choosing a small Theresa’s Deluxe ($17.95) over the likes of the Margherita Guests may also custom-order their own New York-style pizza drawing from a fair number of cheeses and toppings Our wait for the food seemed to stretch on a bit We suspected that the calzones/strombolis may have been what held things up since our server delivered the other meals first but then we had to wait several more minutes for the dough-filled entrees to arrive which was much larger than I had envisioned The crust of the eight slices was average thickness and I was pleased enough with the quantity and quality of the cheese and other toppings It reminded me a good bit of the pizzas made by the Gondolier franchise I ate several slices that evening and boxed up the rest to go The Spouse characterized the lasagna as “average,” and I agreed but it struck me as a cookie-cutter effort And although I didn’t taste it firsthand (I paid only for my and The Spouse’s food) my friend who ordered the veal Marsala was likewise disappointed in that dish everyone who ordered a stromboli or calzone raved about them chewy dough and the quality of the respective fillings It seems that the dishes that were primarily dough-based seemed to fare better than the more traditional Italian entrees including a substantial enough menu that some items were bound to land in the favorable column Compared to the larger Knoxville-area sample size service and atmosphere skew more to the average spectrum of the bell curve but this restaurant does benefit from a convenient location for most Tellico Village residents
