Equity and Inclusion programs at colleges across the nation
while 48% believe in the redeeming values of having diverse perspectives in the workplace
Rusty Hills
a former chairman of the Michigan Republican Party who teaches at the University of Michigan Gerald Ford School of Public Policy
shockingly rare because it came from a man who for a long time helped elect Republicans to major offices across the state
Hills takes us on a historical journey to separate fact from fiction and lays out the case for an inclusive America that truly embraces everyone regardless of their background and heritage
He offers a comparative analysis that undercuts one of the core arguments being made by the anti-DEI propaganda machine: that most people of color in a position of authority are not deserving of the role
His decision to speak out in defense of a more accepting nation is courageous and admirable because there are others in his ilk who out of fear have chosen to remain silent even though they know that the coordinated attacks on DEI are simply political retribution and not based on any empirical data
The overall goal of DEI is to establish a mechanism to give more people opportunity to thrive
I have known Hills for years and even though we have not agreed on every issue
I always appreciated his candor and willingness to find common ground
The Republican-controlled state House is in overdrive right now to do Trump’s bidding to ban diversity
His thoughtful approach to why DEI should be embraced is what we need
DEI is simply an initiative that gives voice to the unheard and lifts people from isolation and underrepresentation in the workplace
The band of reactionary forces in Lansing determined to make Michigan less welcoming are undermining the core strength of the state: diverse communities
Gretchen Whitmer has chosen to either avoid the debate over the future of DEI or act as if it is no longer suitable to her political aspiration
The tide is against DEI and the governor is missing in the discourse to defend a program that is integral to the advancement of Michigan’s diverse communities
a Democratic governor who made her political fortune preaching racial equity when she needed Black votes cannot keep silent now
And ours is an evolving democratic experiment that has continuously faced challenges to achieve true inclusion
Yet we cannot avoid the history of past injustices and systemic barriers that many ethnic communities have faced in the long journey to realize their full participation in the nation
That history is well documented and cannot be erased by executive orders or high-sounding pronouncements that are meant to instill fear in educational institutions and corporations

Jordan Thompson was Stoke City's longest-serving player before his release by the club
Stoke City's long-serving Northern Ireland midfielder Jordan Thompson is leaving the Championship club after five-and-a-half seasons
The 28-year-old joined Stoke in January 2020 from Blackpool and made 178 appearances
He played 23 times in the league this season but missed the Potters' last three games through injury as the club secured survival on the final day following a relegation-threatened campaign
Stoke have also released USA international Lynden Gooch and defenders Michael Rose and Enda Stevens
Jordan Thompson proud to reach personal milestone
Stoke appoint ex-Coventry boss Robins as manager
the club exercised an option to extend midfielder Lewis Baker's contract for another season
who has been with Stoke since January 2022
spent the first half of this season on loan with Blackburn before returning to the Potteries at the start of the year
Stoke sporting director Jonathan Walters said, external Baker
"has been an integral part of our side since he returned to the club in January" and had "played some of his best football for Stoke City" under boss Mark Robins
Walters said the club were grateful to someone "who
gave 100% on each of the 178 times he donned a Stoke City shirt" and called his contribution to the side "significant and valued"

scoring between seven and 12 points in the other six games and shooting 37.5% or below in each of those contests
who led Houston in scoring (21.0 points per game on .423/.354/.813 shooting) during the regular season
averaged just 13.3 PPG during the postseason
with shooting splits (.372/.295/.667) well below his season-long rates
The 23-year-old finished with eight points on 3-of-8 shooting in Game 7
s–t,” Green said when asked to assess his performance in the series
According to Alexander, Warriors defensive stalwart Draymond Green said slowing down Jalen Green was a primary focus for Golden State
“We did a good job on him to start the series and I think that rattled his confidence a little bit,” said Draymond Green
“This isn’t something he’s been apart of before
but you’ve got to give the guys credit who were guarding him
We know what they are capable of when he’s scoring and so we really wanted to take him out of this series.”
Houston signed Jalen Green to a three-year
Given the way the offense — and Green — struggled
Alexander anticipates “non-stop” questions this offseason about how Houston can improve on that end of the court
as well as Green’s future with the team
Just gotta get rid of loser Dillion Brooks
They played the Warriors tougher than anyone
got every cheap whistle while beating the crap out of Steph while GSW got no whistles ever
The West was too close to call from positions 2-8 this year
GSW finishes at least a top 4 team in the West
Man you gotta get over the over the top Dillon Brooks hate
He’s a good player and helped this team grow over the last two years
Just floors me as a GS fan you can legit hate Brooks to that level while actively rooting for Draymond
@CamFrost the fact you think they are the same type of player proves you don’t know ball
Draymond is 10000x better than Brooks at every aspect of basketball
Dillon Brooks has been a net negative to the Rockets
That’s because Brooks is playing top 5 minutes a game instead of 5 mins a game like his skillset and IQ allows him in this league
You give ME a break – YOU are the one replying to ME – I wasn’t asking your opinion
Well when you put something ridiculous on the internet for anyone to see
anyone can respond “lil broski.” You’re emotionally attached to this Dillon Brooks hate and it clouds your ability to see how he’s very obviously a valuable player
Draymond is a very good player and always has been
You HATE Brooks for what he does while at the exact same time can watch Draymond get multiple techs and flagrant fouls in a 7 game series
It believes that Curry winning rings somehow makes him a winner and everyone else losers
Rockets fans wanted to trade Jalen Green/fillers for Giannis
Amen Thompson is def going to be a star … if he ever develops a consistent jumper or 3pt shot
No kidding – at his age (22) he’s probably the best young sf in the league
he should be one of maybe 2 Rockets that are untouchable
Their 2 best players range can be measured in inches rather than feet (Amen/Sengun)
Green Jabari Lawndale Whitmore for KD math works
Throw in a couple picks you got a stew baby (Rip CW)
Yes 3rd team most likely in any regards so both teams take less money and Hou wouldn’t have to be capped at apron 1 ~ Green can def go anywhere
I had Lawndale moving to 3rd team in scenario above but Hou has a ton of routes to chose
Cam is 20 and Ime barely played him in the playoffs
FVV is overpaid but is one of the few vets
I’d try to keep Adams but he’s going to have a lot of interest
and Whitmore are the chips they can use to make a big addition if they wanted to… Booker
Trade Green allow Reed to workout by putting him in the starting lineup so they a have a deep throat
Keep Fred then recruit the best FA to fit their team.
Somethings will depend on where they end up in the lottery
IF they land Ace Bailey or Derik Queen – you can feel better about moving Jabari Smith instead of paying him a year from now and kicking the can on paying playeres
I think you could get a FRP from someone like the Sixers if they landed at 5 or 6 and not looking to draft Queen or Maluach themselves
I would think Jalen Green has clearly been the odd-man out for bringing in a legitimate star player
Reed Sheppard can be added to that deal – buts already imo
IF I was ranking their trade targets – Giannis
LaMelo all might be available but come with risk (age
I’d only be willing to discuss trades around Booker with the Suns if I was the Rockets
The Suns have zero leverage in that discussion
but the Rockets can just hold onto the Suns picks as well
Cam Whitmore pick 9 and and protected future first for Trae Young and pick 22
Jalen Green and the 9th overall pick for LaMelo Ball
Cam Whitmore and the 9th overall pick for Coby White and pick 45
Cam Whitmore and the 9th overall pick for Lauri Markeneen and Keyonte George

Thompson Powers Beavs to Doubleheader Sweep May 03
– The Oregon State softball opened the final road series with a sweep of Pacific on Saturday afternoon
Tristian Thompson drove in a combined four of the Beavers' 11 runs between the games
Following a solo home run by the Tigers' leadoff hitter
the Beavers buckled down for the win in the day's opener by a 6-1 margin
Oregon State went ahead with two runs on three hits in the second and never looked back to snap a three-game skid. Following a one-out single by Morgan Howey, Thompson slammed a homer to left field to give OSU a three-run cushion at 4-1. The Beavers crossed the plate twice more to give Logan Hulon
The Beavers used 13 hits to power the performance, led by Lici Campbell's three and three others with a pair
Hulon (11-12) took the win after tossing the game's entirety
struck out 10 to six hits allowed with the sole run
Three runs between the fourth and fifth innings by the Beavers were the needed separation from Pacific for the series win at 6-2
After falling behind on a two-run homer by the Tigers in the third, Oregon State responded quickly with two scores off hits from Madison Weir and Paige Bambarger to make it 3-2
Thompson capped the inning's scoring with a single that brought home Bambarger to put the lead at a pair
Jaeya Butler and Campbell slugged solo homers to push the final separation to four runs in the fifth and seventh innings
Ellie Garcia (10-9) was credited with the win after striking out 10 Tigers in the game's entire 7.0 frames
The Californian allowed the two Pacific runs on just three hits and four walks
Garcia quelled any hope for a Pacific comeback late when she forced consecutive three-up
Oregon State will wrap the series against the Tigers tomorrow with a matchup from Pacific's Bill Simoni Field
Action is set for noon and can be seen on ESPN+
MLB Trade Rumors
By Steve Adams | May 2
Both players were recently designated for assignment and passed through outright waivers unclaimed
It seems that with regard to Chavez in particular
He can’t simply be optioned to the minors
but he’s clearly content to continue functioning as what’s effectively the 41st man on Atlanta’s 40-man roster
The team will likely continue to summon Chavez to the majors when a fresh arm is needed
then run him through the DFA/waiver process and re-sign him
The 41-year-old Chavez has now pitched with Atlanta in each of the past five seasons
He’s departed on minor league deals with several other clubs but always found his way back to Truist Park
Chavez has pitched three big league innings this year
allowing a pair of runs on four hits and three walks with three strikeouts
He’s been outstanding in 8 1/3 Triple-A innings (one run
13 strikeouts) and has a terrific 2.96 ERA in 204 MLB innings over the past five years
nearly all of which have come with Atlanta
Atlanta Braves Transactions Jesse Chavez Zach Thompson
Jesse doesn’t ever actually leave “town”
Just who do you think has been running up that huge tab at Atlanta’s downtown Marriot Hotel for the last couple of weeks
Wouldn’t he be staying at The Battery hotel out behind right-center
What exactly is the advantage of this cycle of choosing free agency and then re-signing
Does Chavez get a few extra bucks each time
opposed to if he just accepted a minor league demotion
“Is the advantage of this”…For Atlanta it’s depth(and flexibility) and an extra pitcher(who’s always close by)without tieing up a permanent roster spot
The “advantage” for Jesse Chavez
You’d probably have to ask Jesse Chavez
Most players would have too much pride to let themselves be used as Chavez lets himself be used by the Braves–but apparently he doesn’t
It amuses me that people are offended by what the Dodgers do–which is entirely legitimate–but aren’t offended by the Braves’ roster chicanery
Hooks up with his woman for a few days and goes back to work
it alleviates the need for the 10-day minimum when he is sent back down
it allows the Braves to skip the time frame if they need him sooner
and allows Chavez to bypass a mandatory minimum stay in the Minors
@yankee thanks for the clarity on the rules
Didn’t have any idea but now the revolving door experience makes sense
Could be possible that a form of unofficial compensation and an unofficial deal are in place to essentially allow atlanta to circumnavigate mlb roster rules
But doesn’t he have to pass through waivers before he can be resigned
29 teams have to say they don’t want him
Any MLB team can stop this from happening by picking him up
I don’t think it is really circumnavigating the MLB roster rules when every team is given a chance to pick him up off waivers
you mean “circumventing,” not “circumnavigating.” Circumnavigating means going around the world
Billy Martin’s ghost to manage Yankees in 2026 too
Only to be fired by George Steinbrenner’s ghost a few days later….
He should run for Mayor of Atlanta after he retires
He might have become a free agent but he never left georgia
m.youtube.com/watch?v=BcZbK93Zfk4
This is the NINTH separate time Chavez has been acquired by the Braves
I can’t recall the number off the top but Effectively Wild talked about this question on an episode a few weeks back
Chavez has now signed 3 contracts with the Braves since the start of March
Either Chavez doesn’t like the contract or the Braves don’t like the contract
Chavez / can you release me so I can get a better contract next week
…or Atl is circumnavigating mlb roster rules and Chavez is getting something out of the arrangement
Considering they’ve all been minor league contracts and the two sides seem to be on good terms
I highly doubt it’s because either party doesn’t like the contract
doing this to keep Chavez around without having to constantly DFA him
He passed through waivers on April 29 and Chavez elected free agency
Every MLB team has the opportunity to claim him off waivers or sign him to a minor league contract after he elects free agency
Chavez was a 42nd round draft pick and turned that into 14+ years of MLB service time
Alex Anthopoulos (if you see this in the comment)
May want to hold onto those Jesse Chavez jerseys
This Jesse Chavez emotional roller coaster is more than most of can bear
Hell in a Cell match between Jesse and Casey Lawrence
Winner never gets DFA’d again and loser had to retire
this is like the best version of roster manipulation
Obviously Thompson isn’t great but we are so bias about fastballs
92 with good movement can be great (even lead to lots of Ks)
Remember Eovaldi throwing 100 and striking out 5 per 9
It’s such a blanket way of analyzing pitchers
I’m sure when Chavez was putting up a sub-2 era he would have appreciated someone saying “he only throws 90
But he could be useful to stash at AAA for a spot start.”
It’s possible to become a Jesse Chavez journeyman for 1 team
It feels like they’ve dropped and resigned him 5 times this season already
The Atlanta baseball park is very much not in Atlanta
Chavez is the friend with benefits who always comes back when they both feel like it
MLB should consider a limited option rule for veteran marginal players to allow them stable employment without going through waivers
Someone like Chavez or Lawrence could be the 41st player on the roster and benefit themselves and the team as long as both agree to the arrangement
When he retires he will become the asst bullpen coach or a minor league pitching coach for the Braves

2025) — Gisele Thompson scored the first goal of her NWSL career with help from — none other than — her sister
The two made league history Friday night as the only sisters to combine for a goal
Alyssa kicked a left-footed cross to a streaking Gisele
who found the back of the net in the 22nd minute
Angel City ultimately defeated the Washington Spirit 4-3
the sisters shared a celebration of pure elation
A wide-eyed Alyssa couldn’t believe she had the honor of assisting her little sister’s first professional goal
“I thought I would have been the one to score, but it was so nice Gisele got her first goal and I had the assist to her,” Alyssa said
“We’ve always dreamed about this, especially in this high level of football,” Gisele said. “Doing it together is amazing. Getting my first goal is so incredible. Dream come true.”
Alyssa, 20, and Gisele, 19, began playing together on Angel City in 2024. Gisele joined a year after Alyssa signed with their hometown squad in 2023. Earlier this year, both sisters agreed to contract extensions with Angel City to remain in Los Angeles through 2028.
The Thompson sisters also contributed to U.S. Women’s National Team history when they started the SheBelieves Cup second match in February. They became the third sister duo to start a USWNT game together; Kristie and Samantha Mewis were the first in 2014. Lorrie and Ronnie Fair were the first pair of sisters to play together in a USWNT match in 1997, but they never started together.
The Thompsons haven’t connected for an international goal yet, but when the opportunity arises, it too will be a moment for the sisters to cherish.
For a fifth time in under 10 years, Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors won a best-of-seven series in the NBA playoffs against the Houston Rockets
Houston had one of the league’s best defenses throughout the 2024-25 season
and its “head of the snake” — as head coach Ime Udoka often puts it — is versatile second-year guard/forward Amen Thompson
Thompson was the primary defender on Curry for much of the series
the 36-year-old veteran showed clear admiration for the 22-year-old that spent most of the series trying to prevent him from getting quality shot attempts
4 overall draft pick from the NBA’s 2023 first round
You kind of saw him develop in front of everybody’s eyes
I know people who watch the Rockets play for the last two years have seen the potential
I know he’s been trying to develop his game
and I think he loves the challenge and loves to be in the fight. So
and it’s kind of crazy that the old man got it done
As an elite athlete with positional versatility
the 6-foot-7 Thompson also made clear strides on offense
foul plagued start to the first playoff series of his NBA career
Thompson averaged 20.0 points (54.7% shooting)
and 2.5 steals per game from Game 4 through Game 7
Those numbers helped Houston overcome a 3-1 series deficit while pushing the Warriors to the brink of elimination
but I’m really proud of the team getting it back to a Game 7 and almost being able to win that game,” Thompson said Sunday

— The Chiefs made room for a 16-player class of undrafted free agents Saturday by releasing linebacker Blake Lynch and waiving defensive end B.J
who is expected to revert to the club’s roster this weekend
Thompson went into cardiac arrest after suffering a seizure during a team meeting on June 6
He spent the season on the non-football illness list as he underwent rehab following the episode
Placing Thompson on waivers with a failed physical designation means that if no other NFL team submits a claim for him by 3 p.m
Thompson will return to the Chiefs on injured reserve
He will not count toward the team’s 90-player roster limit
but he will remain under the care of the team’s physicians
athletic trainers and physical therapists as he continues his rehab
The Chiefs remain committed to helping Thompson fully recovery from his cardiac arrest and seizure
regardless of whether he returns to football
The Chiefs selected Thompson in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft with the No
The 26-year-old Thompson spent two seasons at Baylor and four seasons at Stephen F
where he was twice first-team All-Western Athletic Conference
Thompson was a part of Kansas City’s 2023 Super Bowl championship
He saw his only action that season in the Week 18 season finale at the Los Angeles Chargers
where he made two tackles while playing 28 snaps on defense and 16 special teams snaps
this was his second stint with the Chiefs after signing a free agent contract on March 3
He initially signed with the club’s practice squad Dec
and was elevated to the active roster to play in the Week 18 season finale at Denver only six days later
He picked up six combined tackles in the game
while playing 25 defensive snaps and 22 special teams snaps
The Chiefs released him from the practice squad Jan
It’s possible Lynch could return to the Chiefs upon the completion of the rookie minicamp on Monday
depending on how many of the undrafted free agents the club opts to keep on the 90-player roster
As an NFL veteran with three years of experience
Lynch becomes a free agent immediately and does not need to pass through waivers
He’s free to sign immediately with any NFL team

Amen (left) and Ausar Thompson continue to shine on the playoff stage
we’ve watched the Pistons and Rockets earn wins to stave off elimination and extend their respective series to a Game 6
one common denominator between the two teams and their victories has been a Thompson
were both crucial in keeping their squads alive in the postseason
operating as difference makers on both ends of the floor
Their defensive prowess has put each in a significant position
tasked with guarding their opponents’ best player
Amen of the Rockets has been in charge of making things difficult for Stephen Curry
while Ausar of the Pistons has had the assignment of staying with Jalen Brunson
and it’s not feasible to fully stop either
especially throughout the course of a playoff series
each of them was able to clamp down and make things difficult for their adversary
Brunson was held to just 4-for-16 shooting and 16 points
He had yet to score less than 30 in any of the previous four games
Amen aided in holding Curry to 4-for-12 shooting
as Houston opened up a significant lead in the game
sending Golden State’s starters to the bench for good early
They were key contributors on the offensive end
Ausar finished the Pistons’ Game 5 win with 22 points on 8-for-10 shooting and earned 12 opportunities at the charity stripe
The 22-point performance tied a career-high from his rookie season and was the most points he scored in a game this year
He stayed active in cutting to the rim and finding holes in the defense as Jalen Duren and Cade Cunningham earned the defense’s attention in the paint
he provided 25 points on 8-for-12 shooting
tying his second-highest output of the season
His two-way success earned him a team-high +32 rating in the Rockets’ 131-116 win over the Warriors in Game 5
he became the youngest player in NBA playoff history to record a 25+ point
Repeating these performances will not be an easy task
but their success should build confidence that they can
the Pistons and Rockets will be difficult teams to beat
Although history suggests it’s highly unlikely for a team to come back from down 3-1
history hasn’t quite seen players like the Thompson twins
You can catch Ausar and the Pistons attempt to force a Game 7 against the Knicks tonight at 7:30 ET on TNT. Meanwhile, Amen and the Rockets will take the floor against the Warriors in Game 6 on Friday at 9 ET on ESPN

behind two goals each from Frank Nazar (Mount Clemens
Mich./Chicago Blackhawks/University of Michigan) and Tage Thompson (Orange
Conn./Buffalo Sabres/University of Connecticut) earned a 5-2 victory over Germany here tonight before a capacity crowd of more than 14,000 at PSD Bank Dome in its lone pre-tournament game for ahead of the 2025 IIHF Men’s World Championship
“It was a great atmosphere and a fun game to be a part of,” said Ryan Warsofsky

Mass./San Jose Sharks/Boston College) and Matty Beniers (Hingham
Mass./Seattle Kraken/University of Michigan)
Germany got back in the game with goals at 7:26

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich — The sport of hockey requires a lot of heart, but for almost three decades, the heart of the Grand Rapids Griffins has been right behind a door labeled Equipment Manager and belongs to Brad Thompson
he's the heart and soul of this team,” Griffins' Captain Josiah Didier told me
If you have spent any time around the Griffins
“If you walk through the hockey world and you say
who's Brad Thompson?" Thompson told me from his office at Van Andel Arena
A name that was bestowed upon him in his second year with the team by former Griffin’s Captain Eddie Patterson because of Brad’s love of rap music - fo shizzle
“It was in the 90s when Snoop Dogg was big.”
Dogg has become a very fitting nickname for the now equipment manager who has been a loyal
and loved member of the Griffins for 28 years
and I've been friends ever since,” longtime player and current Assistant Coach for the Griffins Brian Lashoff told me
when we redid our affiliation with Detroit
but he cares about this community," added team President Tim Gortsema
who celebrated his 2,000th professional game with the team back in November 2024
does more than just sharpen skates and tape sticks
A fact that’s obvious by the amount of love from former players he has on display around his office
and he makes every day a great day," added Didier
"He's not just a guy that you come around the rink and work with," said Lashoff
Providing a needed voice to anyone seeking his advice
like I have that in me to show them that it's a game
The people out there are the ones that let you do that by buying a ticket and to come to watch you
"What I do is try to just make everybody as good as me
so you can excel when you step your foot outside this door.”

and Yessica Hardin-Mercado are running for Position 1 on the Hillsboro school district board.Courtesy of the candidates
.st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}By Julia Silverman | The Oregonian/OregonLiveTwo candidates
are vying to succeed Erika Lopez in the Position 1 seat on the Hillsboro school board
Hardin-Mercado is the chief strategy officer at a local indoor air quality business
and Thompson is director of assessment content at a global educational software company
Lopez served two terms and is not seeking reelection
Here is how both candidates responded in their own words to questions posed by The Oregonian/OregonLive
Responses have been lightly edited for style and to meet word limits
Q: What do you consider the two most pressing issues in the Hillsboro public school system and why
How will you address these as a board member
Hardin-Mercado: One of the most urgent issues is making sure all students have the tools
especially in math and staying connected to school
and educators to identify barriers and co-create solutions that reflect their real experiences
I would focus on strengthening academic support
improving how we use data and building stronger bridges between schools and families
Students and families know what’s working and what’s not
I’ll work to ensure decisions reflect our community’s voice and move us forward with purpose
with reading and math scores among the lowest nationwide
I’m committed to evidence-based strategies inspired by high-performing states like Massachusetts
and Utah — emphasizing strong educational standards
building trust and collaboration between parents
Open dialogue and transparency will help address shared concerns
Q: Enrollment has declined about 8% since 2019
I would prioritize protecting the classroom experience
safety and instruction as intact as possible
I would also advocate for a transparent process that includes community input
Budget decisions must be values-driven and data-informed
with a clear focus on long-term sustainability and minimizing impact on students
Thompson: This question requires more insight than I have today
Issues like declining enrollment often stem from the disunity and lack of trust between parents and school districts
Hillsboro is also struggling with poor academic performance of our public school students
I believe the school board needs to hear from stakeholders to better understand creative solutions to offset the impacts of budget cuts
This is a prime example of using constructive conversations focussed on share goals to balance the needs of students and teachers
Hardin-Mercado: I am the chief strategy and operations officer at Oregon Healthy Homes
a local business focused on improving indoor air quality and home wellness
I spent over 15 years in public education as a teacher
My work has always centered around service
and creating conditions for people to thrive
Thompson: I am the director of assessment content at Renaissance Learning
Our mission is the accelerate learning for all students
I lead the content development teams creating assessment items for English reading
Spanish reading and Math (English and Spanish)
It is fantastic to work alongside former classroom educators wanting to ensure teachers have actionable data to help each of their students grow in reading and mathematical proficiency
Hardin-Mercado: I earned a bachelor of science in social science and a master’s in education from Portland State University
My background combines classroom experience with a deep understanding of how systems
Thompson: I have been in education for 28 years
environmental studies and anatomy and physiology
rural schools and most recently Beaverton School District
I have a masters in education in teaching and learning with a STEM focus from Ohio State University
Q: Do you have children in the Hillsboro School District
Hardin-Mercado: I have three children in Hillsboro schools
My daughter and youngest son are in elementary school and my oldest son is in middle school
I bring both a parent perspective and a professional background
which gives me insight into the day-to-day realities families experience in our district
Thompson: My son is an adult living with his wife in Vancouver
where he is a captain in the fire department
He did not graduate high school from Hillsboro school district
Q: What’s your opinion of the performance of Superintendent Reiman
How would you hold him accountable in the future
Hardin-Mercado: Superintendent Reiman has led the district through complex challenges and has shown a strong commitment to advancing the strategic plan and improving family engagement
my role would be to ensure that leadership is evaluated through clear goals
measurable outcomes and consistent community input
Accountability should be rooted in transparency
and alignment with the district’s values and priorities
Board oversight is essential to maintaining public trust and ensuring that leadership decisions truly support student success
Thompson: I haven’t had the chance to work with Superintendent Reiman in his current role — it’s been 10 years since I last collaborated with him professionally
I’m looking forward to building a strong working relationship with him if elected to the school board
My opinion of his performance will be shaped by our interactions and his leadership
I’ll hold him accountable through measures like contract oversight
and the community to ensure public accountability
Q: How will you balance the needs of students with those of teachers as represented by their union in stances where those may be at odds
Hardin-Mercado: Strong schools depend on healthy relationships between students
I believe we can balance these needs by listening with curiosity
and keeping student well-being at the center
but respectful dialogue and shared problem-solving can move us toward decisions that support both student outcomes and a strong
Thompson: All hard conversations and decisions require constructive conversations focused on shared goals
I aim to balance the needs of students and teachers by fostering collaboration through open dialogue and transparent decision-making
Solutions with planned change management helps build trust and balances the needs of all stakeholders
Q: Lawmakers are considering a bill that would mandate off and away policies for mobile devices in schools statewide
What do you think is the best way for your school district to enforce such a policy
a mobile device policy should be co-developed with input from students
Schools need flexibility to implement it in ways that match their learning environments while maintaining a focus on engagement
Thompson: I support this policy and believe its success will depend on thoughtful implementation
Clear communication of rules and consequences
the district must effectively engage parents through transparent communication and advocate for their backing
this policy has the potential to enhance student focus
and minimize behavioral disruptions—creating a positive effect improving teaching and learning in the classroom
Q: Do you think school consolidations will be necessary in your district in the next five years
what is the best way for your district to navigate that often-fraught decision-making process
Hardin-Mercado: If consolidation becomes necessary
the district must approach it with transparency
and a focus on minimizing disruption for students
Decisions should be guided by both long-term sustainability and what is best for student learning and access
Thompson: If school consolidations become necessary in the Hillsboro School District
I will advocate for the formation of working groups that include key stakeholders—students
these groups will assess options and develop a thoughtful plan to guide this process
we can navigate this critical decision in a way that upholds the best interests of everyone involved and maintains trust within the community
academic outcomes in Hillsboro are still below pre-pandemic levels
the governor and lawmakers have proposed an accountability overhaul that would give the state new powers to provide turnaround coaching to school districts and direct spending of up to 25% of a school district’s budget if students aren’t making growth
and centered on partnership and not control
While the state can play a role in providing support and resources
decisions about how to improve outcomes should be led by those closest to students
and professional learning and not top-down mandates that risk disconnecting from local needs
I believe in preserving local control whenever possible
as I feel decisions impacting our community are best made by those closest to it
I advocate for more decision-making at the local level rather than being dictated by the state
I would need to thoroughly understand the specific policy
and potential outcomes to ensure my position aligns with what is best for our district and community

Brunson, whose 40 points carried the Knicks to a 116-113 victory in a wild Game 6 over the pesky Pistons on May 1
was asked postgame about his winning 3-point shot over the defense of Thompson after finally ending an extremely competitive series
After explaining how he created space despite the efforts from the prodigious second-year wing
Brunson was effusive in his praise for Thompson
“That dude was tough to play against," Brunson said at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit
I told him straight to his face after the series
drilling a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 4.3 seconds to play after shaking Thompson near the top of the key and dribbling into a wide open jumper
"Thompson stumbles and Brunson humbles him," Clyde Frazier said on the Knicks' MSG broadcast
ANALYSIS: Pistons will regret Game 6 collapse vs Knicks all summer long. This one stings
Brunson averaged 31.5 points per game in the series on 24.8 field goal attempts and 43.6% shooting
Thompson was fantastic as an individual defender against Brunson in the series
most notably in Game 5 when Brunson scored just 16 points on 4-for-16 shooting in a Pistons upset victory
But Thompson curiously played just 23 minutes in Game 6
collecting three steals and two blocks to go with 17 points
while Brunson cooked the Pistons for 40 points on 15-for-33 shooting
Only reserve center Paul Reed (eight minutes) played less in Game 6 among the Pistons' eight-man rotation
"He's guarding one of the most difficult matchups in the NBA," Pistons coach J.B
How he can generate space at his size is remarkable
he just did what he does and made the one more."
Thompson poked the ball free from Josh Hart
finished a tough lefty breakaway layup for a 109-105 lead
then raced back down the court and drew an offensive foul on Karl-Anthony Towns
But Thompson was pulled for a few minutes and re-entered with the Pistons clinging to a 112-110 lead with 83 seconds left
Thompson immediately collected a steal and then locked up Brunson for a block and shot-clock violation
but the Knicks closed on an 11-1 run to stun the Pistons and the crowd
Asked between Games 1 and 2 about the challenges guarding Brunson
He most likely has a different outlook after getting crossed up on a move that has some comparing the sequence to Michael Jordan's Game 6 winning shot over Bryon Russell in the 1998 NBA Finals
Let's hope we get more of this budding rivalry between the Knicks and Pistons

$50 million contract in a multi-team sign-and-trade
The acquisition was a great fit for the Mavericks
who lacked shooting in their 2024 NBA Finals run
who wanted to leave a struggling Warriors squad for a title contender and pursue his fifth ring
Thompson averaged 14.0 points per game on 39 percent shooting from beyond the arc in his first season as a Maverick
Last offseason, the Dallas Mavericks signed sharpshooter Klay Thompson to a three-year
Dallas traded a budding Quentin Grimes for Caleb Martin
Thompson had a solid season for the Mavs last season, scoring his performance as a "B" grade
Thompson's role will be significantly more important next season with the roster turnover and Irving's injury
He will be one of the only consistent shooters on the team to start the season
his role as a shooter will remain increased
Jason Kidd will have to find a way to get Thompson more involved next season; last season was his lowest-scoring season since his rookie year
He weaponized his shooting talent as a Warrior through off-ball actions and timely cuts
combined with Steph Curry's on-ball brilliance
was the offensive foundation for four NBA titles in the Bay
Kidd has an opportunity to recreate this offensive system
with the 2022 Warriors roster as the blueprint
the 2022 Warriors roster had limited shooting talent
regularly starting two non-shooters in Draymond Green and Kevon Looney
Coach Steve Kerr used the non-shooters as offensive hubs for dribble handoffs for the shooting threats
The constant threat of a quick Thompson three forced defenders to guard the non-shooters at the perimeter
which opened up the paint for the rest of the team
Kidd should replicate this offensive system by pairing Thompson's dynamic shooting with the size and inside ability of Naji Marshall
Thompson's shooting will be a huge X-factor for the Mavericks next season
The lack of proven and consistent shooting talent on the roster has forced him into a larger role than expected
If he is more involved as a shooter next season without sacrificing his efficiency
the Mavericks' offense will have the firepower necessary to make a playoff run
If Thompson cannot rediscover his old form
the season could be over before Irving even sees the floor

Thompson had a solid season for the Mavs last season, scoring his performance as a "B" grade
It was also Hield’s best postseason showing yet
Despite a nine-year career and over 700 regular-season games
and only in the elimination Game 6 did he show signs of life
Golden State brought him in for one reason—floor spacing
His career three-point percentage of 39.7% made him one of the league’s elite shooters
But he found it hard to carve out a rhythm on a deep Warriors team
Hield started just 22 games and posted a modest 11.1 points per game
The irony in Hield’s Game 7 eruption is striking
He produced a performance reminiscent of Thompson
built a reputation for showing up in elimination games
One of his notable playoff moments also came against Houston in 2019—27 points on 7-for-13 shooting
The Buddy Hield-Klay Thompson comparison isn’t just poetic—it’s becoming relevant
Hield’s Game 7 echoed the type of heroics Thompson provided for over a decade
The Warriors now turn their attention to a tougher challenge—the Minnesota Timberwolves
The question looms: what role will Hield play
Steve Kerr didn’t insert Hield into the starting lineup until Game 4 against Houston
That change came after a five-three-pointer showing in Game 3 forced his hand
Kerr might lean toward Moses Moody against the Timberwolves. Moody’s defense could be crucial in containing Anthony Edwards
The Rockets didn’t present the same perimeter threats
allowing Kerr to start a more offensive-minded player like Hield
These factors could limit Hield’s minutes if his shooting goes cold
Hield’s Game 7 proved his scoring could swing games
He shot 37.0% from deep during the season on nearly seven attempts per game—good
Inconsistent shooting has often kept him off the floor in big moments
the Warriors can’t afford to ignore his offensive potential
Another thing that makes the Klay Thompson comparisons fascinating is Buddy Hield’s unpredictability
He became the first player in playoff history to follow a scoreless game with 33 or more points in a single postseason
That volatility makes him a wildcard—dangerous
Golden State needs offense. The Warriors struggled against Houston’s zone defense in Games 3 and 4 before cracking it in Game 7. If they want to beat Minnesota’s size and. physicality, they need another shooter to complement Stephen Curry
Hield may never be a Splash Brother in legacy
but in spirit—and on nights like Game 7—he channels one
The Cleveland Cavaliers knew ahead of time that Darius Garland wouldn’t be available for Game 1 of their second-round playoff series against the Indiana Pacers
The Denver Nuggets surprised many when they turned their series against the Los Angeles Clippers around after trailing 2-1
The 2025 NBA draft is regarded as one of the most loaded in recent memory
VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — Mayoral candidate Willis Thompson is urging Vicksburg residents to embrace a community-first mindset
saying the future of Vicksburg depends on collective action—not top-down politics
Speaking at a Get Out the Vote rally Saturday at The Watermark
Thompson pitched a vision of leadership rooted in collaboration and transparency to address the city’s current challenges
“The greatest power we have is shared power,” Thompson said
“It would be naive of me to think that I have answers to all the problem’s of the city of Vicksburg
It’s about partnering… with the police department
and every citizen in the city of Vicksburg.”
Thompson also said that real change starts with public engagement—that each person in the community has something to offer
‘What are you going to do for young people?’ the question really should be
You’ve been places and you’ve done things
and you have something to offer to your community
I just want to be a conduit to bring it all together.”
Thompson also spoke on his plan to foster a business friendly environment
where businesses “can prosper.”
“It disheartens me when people say ‘I want to shut things down and leave,’” he said
“I think that if we work together we can find solutions for success.”
is to make sure that a comprehensive plan is in place
I just want to fix what’s broken and leave behind a roadmap for the next leader.”
he will operate the city with transparency
as well as by implementing metrics to track the city’s success
“We all need to know where the city is going,” he said
We’re going to put some metrics in place so we can make sure that we’re making the right decisions
and we select the right people — based on merit — so that we can be equipped to take care of the problems of the city.”

Sunday’s 103-89 Game 7 victory over Houston
sending the Warriors to a second-round matchup against Minnesota
He provided the key to the Warriors’ escape from a grueling series
His career performance will go down as one of the most memorable by a role player during this championship era
He earned all $8.8 million of this year’s salary in one game
He tied an NBA record with nine 3-pointers in a Game 7
preventing the Rockets’ white-hot shooter from draining more 3s
wasn’t the first time Brooks has been on the receiving end of a Hield explosion
Hield was hearkening back nine years to March 2016
when he put up 37 for the Oklahoma Sooners in the Elite Eight
clasping on his several diamond link chains
The endearing butt of the joke has a free pass to dish it
Because the Warriors were on the cusp of an embarrassing first-round exit — to an inferior team
despite what the records say — until Hield had a career night when they needed it most
It’s the NBA’s truest win-or-go-home dynamic
And while the Warriors are led by stars intimately familiar with such tension
the rest of the roster is largely new to this
The pressing question was how they’d respond
Hield’s jovial spirit seems tailor-made for this stress
trends toward appreciation instead of stress
turned around and apologized as he responded to the greetings
he sat at his cubicle in the visiting locker room
He’s 32 years old with nine NBA seasons behind him
Yet this is just his second postseason series
“I never been in this situation before,” Hield said
He scored his first basket on a layup — attacking Brooks off the dribble — then hit an open 3
He was 9-for-31 from deep in the series coming into the game
he drilled a 42-footer at the buzzer to close the first quarter

Hype moments are punctuated with imaginary gunshots in the air
where the Warriors coaches and staff showered him with his chant
“I’m happy for him because he works so hard all year,” Curry said
And for him to have a game like that in a Game 7 … it’s pretty special.”
In hindsight, of course Curry, Jimmy Butler and Draymond Green likely would’ve figured out a way to win this game, even without Hield going scorched-earth. Did anyone actually think, no matter how exhausted they looked the previous two games
these legendary figures could lose a Game 7 to a young and inexperienced Rockets club with no superstar
Especially how it happened — completely out of nowhere
this was like getting an unexpected fat check in the mail
He totaled 43 points in the first six games of this series
“I never wavered on starting Buddy,” Steve Kerr said
Buddy getting hot changed the whole game in the first half.”
The one who has frustrated Warriors fans with his cold shooting spells delivered memorable relief
fun-loving spirit makes him a locker room favorite showed up big when the vibe grew critical
“He’s the most spontaneous player I’ve ever met
If anyone could go scoreless one game and then do that
I take a look at the last decade of the Golden State-Houston rivalry and how Steph Curry manages to keep coming out on top
the Warriors’ stars found more than enough juice
After looking lifeless in Game 5 and fading late in Game 6
they brought a befitting energy and intensity for Game 7
being extra careful with his passing as he set up his teammates
especially on the back end of the zone that puzzled Houston
He also clawed out 20 points as the Warriors’ main attack option inside
including multiple bail-out buckets at the end of the shot clock
And Draymond Green was special defensively
and providing his usual stellar help defense
Green was among the most gassed Warriors after Game 6
But he said he’d dig deep for what he needed
victory would come down to who else would join them on this mission
but one more player to step up and produce
Curry especially needed another rider. He approached this Game 7 differently than the last one. In Sacramento in 2023, he told the team to get on his back
The plan was to beat Houston with stability instead of explosiveness
to methodically break down the Rockets with a mistake-free outing centered on little things
to quiet the voice in his head that presses when he’s not getting looks
He was desperate to avoid turnovers and manipulate the defense with strong screens and forceful cuts off the ball
He was careful with passing out of traps and didn’t over-dribble
But Brandin Podziemski couldn’t find his shot
Moses Moody wasn’t close on his five attempts
Quinten Post was replaced in the rotation by Kevon Looney
Steve Kerr even dusted off Jonathan Kuminga
followed by a smile and a peer across the locker room at Butler
The Warriors’ championship runs have always featured critical role players
From Leandro Barbosa to David West to JaVale McGee to Otto Porter Jr.
Kerr loves these types — guys who buy into the program while also bringing something uniquely them
who don’t allow limited opportunities to impact their readiness
it’s a clear sign they’ll be ready when needed
and the length of an NBA season guarantees they will be needed
facing the infamy of another blown 3-1 lead
His spirit matched perfectly with the gravity of the moment
with the Warriors in celebration mode and the Rockets reeling
But who knows when Hield will be this hot again

was the kind of guy who could light up a room with his smile and keep it bright with his laughter
he embraced life with the kind of enthusiasm that made you wonder if he had a secret stash of energy drinks hidden somewhere
Jaiden's journey came full circle when he passed away in the same vibrant city on April 12
Jaiden was the beloved ringleader of his family
His loving great grandmother Joyce Carver who predeceased Jaiden
He was also the cherished grandson of the late Angela Carver and Hans Thompson
who no doubt welcomed him with open arms and the best seat in the house
Jaiden had a lot of best friends but he was the only best friend to a lot of people.
Jaiden never met a dirt bike jump he didn't like or a video game challenge he wouldn't take on
especially if it meant spending time with Shana
his partner in crime and digital domination
whether he was sharing his latest gaming tips or the last slice of pizza
Jaiden's love for hanging out with friends was legendary
He was the kind of friend who remembered your dog's birthday and would help you search for your car keys
even if it turned out they were in your hand the whole time
and his love was as generous as his gaming avatar's inventory
In a world that often takes itself too seriously
He reminded us that life is a game best played with joy
and a willingness to hit the restart button with a smile
the boy who played life on the hardest difficulty and won our hearts in the process

HOUSTON -- With his team down 3-1 in its first-round playoff matchup against the Warriors, Amen Thompson leaned against the wall and stared out into the gym at Houston's Memorial Hermann training facility
smiling as smooth R&B music hummed in the background
"[I feel] amazing," he said at the Rockets' morning shootaround Wednesday
Thompson had just watched the Detroit Pistons stave off elimination against the New York Knicks a night earlier as his twin brother, Ausar
scored 22 points to go with 7 rebounds and 2 blocks
based off patterns from that Eastern Conference series that appear to mirror what has transpired with the Rockets in the West
Thompson then snatched away even more from the Warriors in Game 5 on Wednesday night. He notched five steals in the first half to establish a tone of tenacity on defense that galvanized the Rockets in a 131-116 romp that forced Game 6 on Friday in San Francisco
He became the first Rockets player in the past 25 postseasons to score 10 points with 5 steals in a half
as Houston surged to a 76-49 lead at intermission
He also became the first player since Charles Barkley in 1993 to tally 25 points
Thompson conducted a defensive clinic guarding Stephen Curry, while Dillon Brooks clamped down on Jimmy Butler
Houston's defensive stalwarts limited the Golden State stars to 13 and 8 points
and that's what we need from him every single night," Brooks said
being disciplined on the defensive end without reaching
We need that Amen every single game because we're going to go against guys like Steph again
that tenacity that he was playing with gives us a lot of energy
and it makes their best player timid and think
That's what we need: their best players to think
think the game instead of playing in the flow."
Thompson logged his first steal off Brandin Podziemski at 7:44 of the first quarter and zipped to the basket
where he was fouled and knocked down a pair of free throws to give Houston a 17-8 lead
2 came a little more than two minutes later
when he picked Curry's pocket and raced the other way for a putback layup off his own transition miss
Thompson ripped Curry again as Houston built a 40-24 lead to end the opening frame
Houston led by 30 points with 7:02 remaining in the first half and led by as many as 31 in the third quarter
"All them steals," Rockets guard Jalen Green said when asked what stood out about Thompson's performance
"I'm running down the court facing the other way
'Dang.' All the steals were impressive for sure
On the offensive end, Thompson connected on 8 of 12 field goals and drilled his lone 3-point attempt. The rest of the Rockets shot with near surgical precision, too, led by Fred VanVleet (8-for-13
Alperen Sengun chipped in 15 points for a Rockets team that shot 55.1% from the field and 43.3% from 3-point range
Houston scored 18 points off 14 Warriors turnovers
And it was Thompson who sparked the Rockets' first-half defensive frenzy
He became the fifth player to post 25 points
5 steals and 3 blocks in a playoff game since 1974
Ausar and Amen Thompson are now just the fifth pair of brothers over the past 30 years to each log a 20-point performance in the same postseason
"It's hard to pick up full court a guy like Curry," Rockets coach Ime Udoka said
That's kind of what he does regardless of the opponent

CLEVELAND — The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority is honoring Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month with new signs.
Sixteen bus stops along Payne Avenue between E
55th Street are decorated with artwork representing AAPI heritage
The artwork includes eight different designs using unique patterns
The reason the Greater Cleveland RTA picked Payne Avenue is because it said the area has the largest concentration of AAPI residents in Cleveland
and it's commonly known as Cleveland's AsiaTown neighborhood.
“GCRTA honors and uplifts the vibrant culture and contributions of our Asian American & Pacific Islander community in the greater Cleveland area,” said Deputy General Manager Administration & External Affairs Natoya Walker Minor

The Houston Rockets were recently booted from the first round of the 2025 NBA Playoffs at the hands of the Golden State Warriors
In their highly-anticipated Game 7 matchup against the dynastic organization on Sunday night
Buddy Hield and Jimmy Butler took over in enemy territory to grab a 103-89 victory and advance to the Western Conference Semi-Finals
Houston's Amen Thompson served as the brightest of bright spots in their demoralizing loss
spring-loaded star finished the contest with 24 points
nine rebounds and three assists while shooting 56.3% from the field in 37 minutes
4 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft ascend to become a legitimate star on the postseason stage
the Rockets' front office could look to pull off a massive trade to further build around the promising forward
In fact, recent updates indicate that Houston may contact the Phoenix Suns this offseason concerning the availability of their 4-time All-Star guard Devin Booker
"Booker has been the proverbial apple of Houston's eye for a while," Bleacher Report's Zach Buckley wrote Monday
Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp
"When you think about the kind of player who could get this offense rolling
"While he hasn't booked a ton of playoff trips
he has thrive under the bright lights upon arrival
his addition wouldn't put too much win-right-this-second heat on Houston's young core."
Booker wrapped up his 10th NBA campaign in 2024-25 with a Suns team that compiled a brutal 36-46 regular season record
as the group missed out on the Play-In Tournament as the Western Conference's No
Phoenix has been adamant that they will not let go of the elite shot-maker this offseason
though it may be in their best interests to do so in an effort to get a head start on a long-winded rebuild
The 6-foot-6 shooting guard contributed 25.6 points
7.1 assists and 4.1 rebounds for a struggling Phoenix roster
and his incredible mix of mid-range shooting and improved facilitating skills would hypothetically be a perfect match next to Houston's defensive-minded Thompson
the threat of Booker's jump-shot could open up lanes for the high-flier with relative ease
possibly transforming the Rockets' offense into one of the best in the Association
the Rockets would need to be comfortable with unloading plenty of their most coveted young pieces like Reed Sheppard
and Cam Whitmore along with first-round draft capital
the idea of Booker leaving the only franchise he's ever known via trade in the coming months remains highly unlikely

Goaltending is an integral part of the Stanley Cup Playoffs
To better understand the strengths and weaknesses of each goaltender remaining
the past 100 goals allowed for each goaltender in the regular season and every goal in the playoffs were charted to see what patterns emerge in the second-round matchups
The Eastern Conference Second Round between the Washington Capitals and Carolina Hurricanes features the unique challenge of solving Washington’s Logan Thompson and a couple of very different options in goal for Carolina in Frederik Andersen and Pyotr Kochetkov
Thompson enjoyed a breakthrough first season in Washington after being acquired in an offseason trade from the Vegas Golden Knights and credits a lot of it to finally adopting the deeper positional philosophies of Vegas goaltending coach Sean Burke
That has shortened his routes on lateral movements
which fuels an impressive reactive game with his hands even from a compacted stance that can sometimes make him look smaller than 6-foot-4
Traffic and tips: The give-and-take downside of playing deeper in the crease and in a lower stance with active hands is the reliance on seeing the shot release to react and giving up more net when forced into blocking saves behind traffic
So it shouldn’t be a shock that screens played a direct role in 21 percent of tracked goals in the regular season
above the 15 percent average for the more than 8,500 goals tracked for this project since 2017
With Thompson typically at half to three-quarter depth in his crease rather than out near the edge
there is space high if shooters can get pucks up and on net through traffic
and holes for tips (19 goals) when he shifts or reaches
Lateral and back: It should also be no surprise
given Thompson’s positioning and how it puts him in a better position to beat cross-ice passes
that his performance on plays across the slot line -- an imaginary demarcation dividing the ice
from the goal line to the top of the face-off circles -- is well above the tracked NHL average
He’s likely to get across even on one-timers
making it important to elevate above the pads to have a chance to score
But there is exposure created by his neutral approach to depth from a tendency to come across a bit flat with those movements and not always get the backside hip and shoulder squared
This leaves more room for shots back against the grain
which were a factor in 21 of the tracked goals
Maybe not: Don’t be fooled by the highest numbers on the goal chart being in the top corners
Every shot is not tracked for this project
so those aren’t indicative of a save percentage
Thompson’s good at keeping his hands active and his glove up
but that can lead to exposure above the leg pads and off the hips
Dead-angle corners: It only cost him on a couple of goals during the season
but a tendency to sometimes leave his back leg drifting below the goal line when he uses a reverse-VH post integration can make it harder to push up to the crossbar on sharp-angle shots
and that can leave a small area above the short-side shoulder for a well-placed shot
Win the scrambles: Thompson managed tough bounces in front of him well during the regular season with 18 percent of goals off broken plays
and that makes sense because where and how he plays means he rarely takes himself out of position
But four of 11 (36.4 percent) playoff goals have come from those types of plays
and his depth can leave him a bit exposed high when those bounces end up on the sticks of unchecked opponents in tight
The regular-season sample for Andersen is smaller because he missed almost three months recovering from knee injury that required surgery
and his exit after a crease collision with New Jersey Devils forward Timo Meier in Game 4 of the first round means there are questions about whether he’ll be ready to start against the Capitals
But playing 517 NHL games during 12 seasons means there shouldn’t be any questions about the tendencies within Andersen’s well-balanced game
High and clean off rush: The numbers aren’t as lopsided as two seasons ago
when 64 percent of tracked goals came off rush chances
but for a second straight season more than 40 percent (41.8) were scored off the rush
That includes six of seven clean-shot goals that went in high
and Andersen tends to hold his blocker a bit lower than his glove
accounting for some of the discrepancy in the high goal totals between high blocker and high glove
Against the grain: Shooting back the other way was a factor in 19 of 55 goals in the regular season and three of six in the playoffs
but the other factors on those goals varied
Andersen now does a better job of shuffling to stay on angle more often but can still get a little flat with his backward flow
which leaves the back shoulder and hip off angle as shooters get deeper into the zone
wider save-execution stance before shooting can exacerbate this slightly and open holes
Andersen’s conservative depth back in the crease can leave more space for other-direction deflections
especially if he’s also moving into the initial shot
Wide then lateral: Those same shuffles down to the post on plays down the wing closer to the boards can also get Andersen outside his posts and facing the boards as the puck carrier gets below the outside hash marks
including the occasional use of an overlap on his post
and that creates extra distance and a bigger rotation before pushing on cross-ice passes that can follow
Left to right in tight: Every goalie has a side toward which they move better
with a tendency to lunge out and get overextended more often when pushing to his right
especially on lateral plays below the hash marks
which can cause him to lose his net or end up prone on second chances
who played six periods’ worth of hockey after Andersen was injured
plays a more active and at times aggressive style than Andersen and has the explosive athleticism to pull it off
but those tendencies create different kinds of exposure that opponents can try to target
Beware of the poke check: There’s a reason they sell “Poke-chetkov” T-shirts in Carolina: Kochetkov is as active with his stick as any goalie
going so far as to try a poke check (unsuccessfully) on a clear-cut breakaway for Minnesota Wild forward Matt Boldy in January
He does a good job cutting off passes from below the goal line and through the crease
that tendency to reach in one direction delays his movements the other way
shoot the other way: Plays across the middle of the ice were a factor in 35 percent of the tracked regular-season goals
the number of against-the-grain goals (29 percent) was well above the 18.4 percent average
Kochetkov moves very well and can make momentum-changing saves on those lateral plays if you don’t shoot quickly (29 percent of the goals came off one-timers and quick releases)
but he also moves more than many of his peers because of his tendency toward aggressiveness
and you can catch him moving with shots back in the direction from which he is coming
Create chaos: Kochetkov’s rebound goals (seven) were below the average
but pucks off sticks and legs that led to scrambles in front of him were a factor on 23 percent of the regular-season goals
That same tendency to play near the edge of the crease and be more active plays a role
with five-hole exposure as he loads up a lateral push from the butterfly by lifting the knee to grab a skate edge with the push leg
low blocker: The goal totals may suggest shooting high on both sides
but they do not represent a save percentage
and a lot of the clean-look goals (13) and goals on breakaways (14) scored off shots rather than dekes were directed over the pad on the blocker side instead
his high hand position makes it tempting to shoot low
especially if he’s moving as he tends to get set down lower in his stance
Go around him: High totals outside the pads are often an indication of backdoor tap-ins on which the goalie had no chance
and though that was certainly true for several of the goals charted on Kochetkov
there were also times his positional aggressiveness left him stranded outside his posts
allowing patient opponents to go around and tuck the puck in behind him
— The Village of Lac La Belle has officially implemented an ordinance allowing ATVs and UTVs to drive on local roads
The Okauchee Area ATV/UTV Club has been instrumental in getting these ordinances passed in several communities
with a commitment to not use taxpayer money
"Part of our agreement is that we don't spend any tax dollars on it," said Matt Thompson
president of the Okauchee Area ATV/UTV Club
He is a big force behind the effort to get these recreational vehicles road-legal
His club has made significant progress since last April when we first met him
Watch: ATVs and UTVs now legal on streets in Lac La Belle
we have successfully opened the Village of Dousman
and we have just finished the Village of Lac La Belle," said Thompson
The Village of Summit has also approved an ordinance
but administrative issues are currently delaying implementation
The club is now working on an ordinance for the Town of Merton
In addition to meeting all Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) requirements
the new ATV/UTV ordinances include an additional requirement for drivers
"All the ordinances we have been involved with require liability insurance
If someone gets into an accident and damages someone's property
they have to have liability insurance to cover that," said Thompson
Thompson hopes that as people become more accustomed to seeing ATVs and UTVs on roads
Waukesha County will follow Jefferson County's example and allow these vehicles on all county roads
driving them on any county road remains illegal
Thompson said Lake Country residents are enjoying their new transportation options
It is a little different flavor of life," said Thompson

which just aired during Quinta Brunson's big episode
a world in which older folks can get health care and life insurance is hilariously mixed with the OnlyFans craze
In a new sketch that just aired on Saturday
May 3, Quinta Brunson and Kenan Thompson played an older couple who have found a great hack for health care: Doing amateur pornography
"At least your father and I can finally have good life insurance," Brunson's character tells her "daughter" Ego Nwodim in the new sketch
Thompson's character reveals that he and his wife have switched to something called "OnlySeniors."
it's revealed that OnlySeniors is a Black Mirror-esque insurance plan in which seniors get in front of a webcam
Devon Walker protests that this is "just OnlyFans," but Thompson and Brunson's characters are unbothered by what "the chatbabies" are asking them to do
but also speaks a tiny bit to the way that seniors are somewhat erased in culture at large
Not only is it difficult for some older folks to get good coverage
but we also clearly don't like to think too much about them getting busy

SAN FRANCISCO — It’s not just the stamina becoming compromised
Or the arms getting heavy and the strength waning
Fatigue does its greatest damage to the will
Fatigue is the best explanation for what we’ve seen from the Golden State Warriors lately. This unbecoming impotence, this fragility that’s suddenly surfaced, reeks of a team running on fumes. The longer this series has gone — and it’s now going to Game 7 after the Houston Rockets evened the series with a 115-107 win Friday at Chase Center — the less vitality the Warriors have shown
Everyone keeps expecting this trademark Golden State surge
but it has come from Houston while the Warriors sputter
as they launched desperation 3-pointers to no avail and devolved into a mess on defense
feebly surrendering the fourth quarter to a Rockets squad teeming with energy
This was after the Warriors tapped out early in Game 5 to conserve their energy for a close-out game at home
Now Golden State flies two time zones back to Houston
endeavoring to do what they couldn’t at home: win
Sunday will either be a funeral for their season or a flex of their legendary mettle
“It’s always been hard to win,” Warriors star Steph Curry said
There are different challenges of figuring out a team that’s trying to take you out of your rhythm or your patterns or whatnot
Whether that’s the physical challenges of doing it at this stage of your career
or whether it’s because you’re playing a good team.”
It makes sense for them to be in the throes of fatigue
All of them have a track record of battling
Curry has been dealing with nagging injuries all year
and is facing the kitchen sink from an intentionally physical defense
Butler fell out of the sky onto his tailbone in Game 3
and he’s returned to an assignment of defending 6-foot-11 Rockets center Alperen Şengün in the post and blocking out Steven Adams
who is the Warriors’ 6-foot-6 center and defensive anchor
This was always a possible outcome when they acquired Butler at the trade deadline, upgrading from 30-year-old Andrew Wiggins. It worked like a charm, changing the Warriors’ season
But how long they could hold up was a sensible question
but his style of play makes him feel more like the age of the Warriors’ Big Three
One of the few athletes who can match Houston’s explosiveness
Payton joined the starting lineup in Game 6 to deal with Fred VanVleet and take advantage of his rolling
Their remaining hope is a mythological performance from one of their legendary figures
Curry, who has averaged 32.6 points in five Game 7s, must pull out another special performance, akin to his 50-point masterpiece in Sacramento in 2023
whose folkloric toughness willed Miami over Boston in 2023 to get to the NBA Finals
whose career arc essentially started in a Game 7 against the Clippers in 2014
somehow must summon a generational defensive performance
finding enough fire from somewhere without burning the Warriors in the process
It could be a surprise performance from someone else
Jonathan Kuminga turns his straitjacket into a cape
This series seems increasingly overwhelming for the Warriors’ supporting cast
Golden State opened the final quarter down two points
having mustered enough resilience to remain within striking distance of a Rockets squad playing like the No
But the Warriors responded by missing 15 of their first 16 shots — including 10 clanks from 3 — with three turnovers
a blown assignment led to a four-point play by Fred VanVleet
Every big shot they needed to make Friday was cash
and Tari Eason all demoralized the Warriors with their timely 3s
Green — they’re demoralizing the Warriors with their untimely misses
Golden State was 15 of 49 from 3 for the game
making only three more than Houston despite 19 more attempts
and the perimeter defense of Houston hounding
tougher challenge of breaking down the Rockets inside
The Warriors don’t have enough isolation players who can punish Houston’s aggression
felt less insurmountable than it did Friday
But irony has seized the pen as the script of this series unfolds
are being thwarted by a zone defense because they can’t shoot well enough
who pioneered small ball as a championship formula
are getting overwhelmed by a lineup featuring two plodding centers
with all their experience and postseason cachet
are being outmaneuvered by a team using pretty much the same eight guys who are playing like they’ve been here before
who’ve experienced Warriors fatigue more than any other franchise
have produced the Warriors fatigue that could spell the end of the era
Golden State grappled with the uncertainty of what to do
Green and Curry retreated to a private area
Hield picked Curry’s brain about the pros and cons of leaning into a small lineup or going more traditional
It’s a simpler answer for the Hustle Award winner
“I think they probably had 20 points off of broken plays and getting loose balls and kicking out for 3s
you’ve got to make second and third efforts
the person who wants the ball more will get it
which is fighting to come up with the loose balls when they’re out there.”
It’s been essentially a three-month build-up for the Warriors since trading for Butler and climbing out of Play-In Tournament position
The signs of that grind have shown themselves
But Games 5 and 6 have revealed a Warriors team that may not have enough left to win
“I won’t say it’s a lack of effort,” Butler said
All those little things (are about) if you want to do it
But when fatigue has the will in its clutches
